Breakfast Optimists Club supports Big Brothers / Big Sisters

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a  seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.4% in June. This was an increase from 2.3 percent in May and a decrease from 3.5 percent in June 2021.

“Even with a slight uptick to 2.4 percent, the Kansas unemployment rate remained near historic lows in June,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “This indicates strength in the Kansas job market as people continue to find employment across the state.” 

The jobless rate in Geary County rose from 3.5 percent in May to 3.8 percent in June. Riley, Pottawatomie, Wabaunsee and most other counties in the region saw an increase in June.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 4,600 from May. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers.  Private sector jobs increased by 700 over the month, while government increased by 3,900.

“The Kansas economy saw robust hiring in June, adding 4,600 jobs over the month,” said Labor Economist Nathan Kessler. “While the job market remains strong, real hourly earnings continue to decline as a result of persistently high inflation, falling 4.1% compared to June 2021.”

Since June 2021 Kansas' seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 20,800. This change is due to an increase of 21,800 private sector jobs and a decrease of 1,000 government jobs.

KDOT said the start of the U.S. 40 ( East 6th Street Viaduct ) business bridge replacement project in Junction City has been delayed due to a conflict with utilities. The plan is for the work on the bridge to begin in early August.

The project will close a portion of U.S. 40 Business between Union Pacific Railroad and Monroe Street. During construction the roadway will be closed, and traffic will follow a signed detour utilizing I-70. A single lane in each direction is expected to reopen by Nov. 2023. Complete bridge replacement is expected to be finished by June 2024.

King Construction, Inc., Hesston, is&nbsp; the primary contractor for this $15.9 million project.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to 1025 South Spring Valley Road at 6:05 p.m. Thursday. They reported a hit-and-run incident in which Kelly Cook's 2015 Chevrolet Colorado was parked in a parking lot and was struck by an unknown vehicle. There were not any injuries reported.

Cody Brown sold his grand champion market steer during the Geary County 4-H Livestock sale for a premium of $2,300 plus the market value of $2,015. Manhattan Commission Company, JB Pearl, KanEquip and Moonlite Trucking combined to pay the $2,300 premium.

Tava Gustafson sold her grand champion market hog for a $2,200 premium from Central National Bank plus a market value of $277.55.

Grady Oentrich sold his cedar patio table for a $500 premium paid by Bennington State Bank .

77 4-H'ers participated in the livestock and project auction, the same number as in 2021. Thirty-five projects were sold along with 42 head of livestock.&nbsp;

Total premiums were calculated by 4-H Extension Agent Ginger Kopfer at $58,490, up from $56,825 in 2021. Project premiums paid were calculated at $12,265 and livestock premiums at $46,225.

National weather service issues heat advisory

EMS transported Ewers to an area hospital.&nbsp;&nbsp;Stevens was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

On Tuesday of this week the Junction City Commission decided not to provide funding to support Geary Community Hospital due to lack of city funds. But since then the stance may be changing.

Mayor Jeff Underhill explained the request for $6.5 million in operating funds for this year was too much and the City was not able to help at that level. But he noted that he and County Commissioner Alex Tyson as well as County Finance Officer Tami Robison and City Manager Allen Dinkel have been working on this issue. "We think that we've found a solution where the City can help out with some of the shared services that we do such as EMS, and then also&nbsp; we are able to use a little bit of money from our budget and help out financially with a little bit of a shortfall."

Underhill confirmed that a final dollar amount for the assistance has not yet been determined and staff is still conducting some negotiations, "some repayment tools and that sort of&nbsp; thing but we think we have a solution that will get the hospital through."

County and hospital officials have estimated approximately $6.5 million is needed for operating expenses for the hospital this year to get GCH to a partnership with Stormont Vail Health on Jan. 1.

Lawmakers took a step last week towards taking back the nation’s highest award for valor from Army troops who perpetrated one of the most infamous Native American massacres in U.S. history.

The legislation to revoke the medals passed the House of Representatives as an amendment to the fiscal 2023 defense policy bill. Similar attempts have made it this far before, however, only to be stymied during compromises between the House and Senate versions of the bill.

Some 20 soldiers received the Medal of Honor following the Dec. 29, 1890, massacre near Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, where troops from the 7th Cavalry and accompanying artillery units killed hundreds of Lakota men, women and children.

The 7th Cavalry&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7th_Cavalry_Regiment">was organized at Fort Riley in Kansas</a>&nbsp;in 1866.

The U.S. troops had nearly completed confiscating weapons from a Lakota encampment when a struggle with a reportedly deaf man sparked a chaotic one-sided firefight.

When the smoke cleared, dozens of cavalry troopers were wounded or killed by friendly fire — likely from their artillery — and hundreds of Lakota were dead.

Rep. Kaialiʻi Kahele, D-Hawaii, was the legislation’s primary sponsor, though other members of Congress, like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Rep. Reuben Gallego, D-Ariz., have pushed for similar legislation in the past. Kahele is a Native Hawaiian.

Dubbed the “Remove the Stain Act,” the legislation’s advocates, which include more than a dozen Native American tribes and groups, say it’s a long-overdue step to right a historical wrong.

“As Congress continues to consider the FY23 NDAA, the most important defense legislative vehicle that is debated each year, we must remind ourselves of the uncomfortable truth that this land – the United States – was taken from indigenous peoples,” said Kahele in a press release. “Although we can never undo the irreparable damage inflicted on indigenous peoples, we can do our best to respect their lands, empower our communities and acknowledge the truth behind our shared history.”

The Senate is yet to pass its version of the defense policy bill, and the two houses of Congress will have to agree on a compromise version of the legislation. If Kahele’s amendment survives the compromise process, it will mark the success of a decades-long effort from Native American advocacy groups and other members of Congress.

Congress&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/50a20c85ffbac9a6e627b577abc8715a" target="_blank">officially apologized</a>&nbsp;for the massacre in 1990, near its 100th anniversary, but did not rescind the medals then.

But that’s far from certain. Previously, the act passed as part of the House’s fiscal 2022 defense policy bill, but did not make it into the final compromise legislation.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Thanks to the generosity of K-Staters from across the country, K-State Athletics and the Ahearn Fund announced today multiple fundraising records for FY22 related to overall and annual giving.&nbsp;

Overall pledges and cash gifts to the department during the 2022 fiscal year totaled $58.9 million, of which $20.4 million was designated for the Ahearn Fund annual giving program and surpassing its budgeted goal previous record of $18.9 Million in FY19.&nbsp; Included in the $20.4 million in annual giving was a department record $801,000 raised during the Powercat Auction.&nbsp; The department also received $42.6 million in cash giving, marking only the third time in history it has eclipsed the $40 million mark.

“We are grateful for the loyalty and dedication of the K-State Family as we continue to provide the best academic and athletic experience for our student-athletes to compete in the classroom and for Big 12 Championships,” Athletics Director Gene Taylor said.&nbsp; “The support of our fans through ticket sales and Ahearn Fund gifts continue to be the lifeblood of our department, and their support is critical as we continue to enhance our programs.”&nbsp;

Blue green algae update is released

MANHATTAN - Shortly after 8:30 pm Wednesday evening, Riley County Police Department was called to a residence in the 1300 block of Flint Hills Place.

A resident reported she had found a toilet paper roll with a fuse sticking out of it on her back porch several days ago, and brought it inside.

The resident did not contact RCPD until Wednesday evening regarding the item, and the Bomb Team was activated to investigate the possible homemade explosive device.

The Bomb Team cleared the scene with no threat to residents in the area.&nbsp;

The incident remains under investigation and a report of criminal use of explosives has been filed.

RCPD says it appears that the apparatus was made intentionally.

According to RCPD, there is no reason to believe there is any threat to the public with this incident.

Cody Brown had the reserve grand champion market hog.

Tava Gustafson also won the Grady Erichsen Swine Showman Memorial Award.

4-H Swine Show highlights the Geary County Free Fair on Wednesday

GEARY COUNTY—A Junction City man was injured in an accident just before 1p.m. Wednesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Mercury Sable driven by 24-year-old Aaron M. Smith of&nbsp; Junction City was eastbound on Interstate 70 at Grandview Plaza.

The driver intentionally drove across the median into westbound traffic. The car then vaulted from the north shoulder into a tree line on the north side and rolled.

EMS transported Smith to Geary County Community Hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Police, Sheriff's Department and Junction City firefighter personnel participated in an exercise at Junction City High School Wednesday.&nbsp; It was labeled a post incident rescue response training exercise.

Capt. Justin Stopper, Geary County SO, said they reviewed how to provide medical and emergency personnel to help possible victims of a mass casualty event within minutes of that occurring.&nbsp; He noted preparations for the training exercise have been under way with the school district for a long time. "Something we noticed that's been lacking, something we could provide so that everybody's on the same page when it comes to a response to a mass casualty or active shooter."

The exercise was planned for a three-day period, and by the end more than 100 first responders in the county will have received training.&nbsp;

This particular form isn't just the initial response, said Stopper. "That should be handled by whoever's here and everybody has had the active shooter training to where you go, and you actually engage, neutralize the threat, anything like that. This is more the minutes and seconds following that because minutes matter. " The goal of the training was to get law enforcement and medical services provided inside the building while you're waiting for additional help.

Scott Popovich, USD 475 Security Center Manager, said the exercise involved multi-agency training within Geary County. "So it's all Geary County first responders coming into a building where they could have to do this real world, so it's giving them experience they could have to do that in." Popovich added that the training exercise helps the District feel safer. "By doing this they're learning how to save lives quicker."

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s guest speaker on July 20 was Tim Testa. Tim is a Junction City High School graduate and teaches students Physical Education and is a coach of athletes in basketball, cross country and track at his alma mater.

Tim moved to Junction City at the age of nine and in the fourth grade. He attended Eisenhower and Lincoln Elementary Schools. While at Junction City Middle School he became active in competitive sports with other middle schools. He told the Optimists that “Our team looked different from those at other schools because of the diversity in our school. We had students from all over the world in our school and I loved it.” Some of the coaches Tim worked with and was inspired by were Curtis Gray, Tony Ingram, Matt Westerhaus, Jeff Frey and Jeff Coverdale and Bob Schmoekel.

Tim was the JCHS Class President for four years and graduated high school in 2006. He went from high school to Pittsburg State University and upon graduation told his wife “I want to go back to Junction City to teach.” He was hired at Junction City Middle School as a teacher of Physical Education and coached cross country, basketball, and track for five years.

Tim and his wife left Junction City for three years to be a coach at Southwest College in Winfield, Kansas, but realized he “felt the pull to go back to Junction City”. He again alluded to the diversity of the community.

Coach Testa believes that “our community needs organizations like Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and it is the schools that bring people together.” He also shared that “the win/loss record is important to him, but even more so is having students be a part of the culture and this unique community.” Well beyond “the memories of a win/loss record will be the relationships established while in school.”

The guest speaker next week will be Donna Porter from the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library who will share information about the Community History Archives. The club’s Celebrations of Optimism are open to the public beginning at 6:50 AM at the Hampton Inn located at 1039 South Washington Street. First time attendees receive a free breakfast, which is served after 6:00 AM.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Ford Focus driven by&nbsp; Nancy K. Gisi, 56, Miltonvale, was&nbsp;westbound on Sunset Road at U.S. 81 

The driver failed to yield to oncoming traffic. A northbound 2004 Chevy Suburban driven by Curtis J. Bethea II, 35, Newton, struck the Ford.

&nbsp;Both vehicles came to rest in the northbound passing lane of U.S. 81.

EMS transported Gisi, Bethea and a passenger in the Ford Jennifer L. Gavin, 30, Miltonvale, to Salina Regional Health Center. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kansas man, 2 women hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

RILEY COUNTY—A Junction City woman was injured in an accident just before 5p.m. Tuesday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report,&nbsp;a 2011 Dodge Ram driven by David McNamara, 79, of Manhattan struck a 2011 Ford Fusion driven by Ashely Gallio, 24, of Junction City as the car entered the intersection&nbsp;of S. 10th Street and Yuma Street in Manhattan

EMS transported Gallio to Via Christi for treatment of a head injury.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

RILEY COUNTY—A Junction City woman was injured in an accident just before 5p.m. Tuesday in Manhattan.According to the Riley County Police Department activity report,&nbsp;a 2011 Dodge Ram driven by David McNamara, 79, of Manhattan struck a 2011 Ford Fusion driven by Ashely Gallio, 24, of Junction City as the car entered the intersection&nbsp;of S. 10th Street and Yuma Street in ManhattanEMS transported Gallio to Via Christi for treatment of a head injury.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

Cody Brown had the grand champion and Kaycee Brown the reserve grand champion in the 4-H Beef Show at the Geary County Free Tuesday night.

The fair continues Wednesday and Thursday. The 4-H Swine Show is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
