There is work underway to return the Fresh Start Shelter in Geary County to operation. The facility at 136 W. 3rd Street has been closed for some time but new board member Linda Gibson said this week that they are getting the shelter cleaned up, "and making sure that everything is working well in the shelter."

Gibson said the goal is to have a safe and clean environment for people from the community needing a place to stay when they determine a date to open the facility. "We are currently looking for new board members and that's where are right now because we did have a couple board members step down.

Earlier this week the Geary County Commission suspended funding for the shelter. Commissioner Alex Tyson said the facility is going through transitions that commissioners do not feel is beneficial to&nbsp; the county. The county funds the shelter at the rate of $12,000 per year.

Gibson said Shelter officials are hoping to have an opportunity to meet with the county to inform them what they are doing and where they want to go moving forward. Gibson said their goal is to get the shelter open and have the funding to run the facility.

Beginning on May 22nd, and continuing through June 4th, travelers can expect increased police presence on Junction City streets as the Junction City Police Department joins 160 other law enforcement agencies in enforcing Kansas occupant restraint and other traffic laws. It is part of the 2022 Kansas *Click It or Ticket campaign.

When you buckle up before driving or riding in the front seat of a car or truck, you cut your risk of a fatal injury in a crash nearly in half. That’s a massive return on the investment of putting on a seatbelt. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep you safe and secure inside your vehicle, as being ejected from a vehicle is almost always deadly. Additionally, your vehicle’s other safety features, particularly air bags, can’t work as effectively if you’re not buckled up- they are designed to work together.  

Here is the aim of the *Click It or Ticket campaign:  to drastically reduce the number of preventable deaths and injuries that occur when unbelted drivers and passengers are involved in traffic crashes.

Sessions for the selected class members are held throughout the region with Orientation beginning in early September at Rock Springs and Junction City focusing on Team Engagement.&nbsp;

In late September, Pottawatomie County’s theme is Community Collaboration to&nbsp; Adapt to Opportunities and Challenges.&nbsp; Immediately following is Wabaunsee County with the objective of Advocacy and Awareness.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Wabaunsee County addition, new for our 2022-23 class, will add a deeper dive into the regions natural environment, specifically prairie utilization and preservation. It will also greatly increase engagement in rural community entrepreneurship and the agricultural / beef production economy, all critical to the future of the Flint Hills.

Kansas State University’s session, focusing on Visioning, is in October with a two day session at Fort Riley in mid November.&nbsp; That experience underscores Servant Leadership. The Manhattan/Riley County session theme is on Entrepreneurship&nbsp; and Topeka is the capstone in January with a day at the Statehouse to reinforce the importance of Economic Literacy, Collaboration &amp; Compromise.&nbsp; The class graduation, Celebration, is a reflection of the experience and challenge for a refocused lifetime of servant leadership.&nbsp; Executive Director Jack Lindquist says, “The Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program’s primary focus is to create a&nbsp; ‘Pathway to Purpose’.&nbsp; We help create a more engaged Citizen that is morally grounded in Servant Leadership.”

Geary County Emergency Management issues a traffic advisory

Maj. Gen. John Meyer III assumed command of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley Wednesday. He called this an extra special experience to come home to Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division.&nbsp;

Meyer first served at Fort Riley 24 years ago in the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team,&nbsp; and noted that it was extra special for him to come to the Post and the 1st Infantry Division. He called it "very humbling." Meyer also noted that he looked forward to working with the Soldiers and the community leaders on this Post.

Meyer succeeds Maj. Gen. ( Promotable ) D.A. Sims who will serve with the Joint Staff in Washington D.C.&nbsp; Sims told a change of command audience on the Cavalry Parade Field that in his 31 years in the he had not had any job like this one. "In the past two years we have seen the best of America." 

He referred to Fort Riley initiatives that have occurred during his time at the Post including the Year of Honor recognition of 37 Congressional Medal of Honor recipients that have served during the history of the 1st Infantry Division. Sims added that he has also observed during his two years at the installation, the formation of cohesive teams that cannot lose on the field of battle.

New leadership takes command at Fort Riley

Minor injuries were reported by the Geary County Sheriff's Department in an accident late Tuesday night on I-70 four miles east of Junction City. Erick Holzhausen, Oklahoma City, OK, was traveling westbound in a Hyundai Elantra when he swerved to miss a deer, the vehicle left the roadway and struck an embankment.&nbsp;

Holzhausen was transported to Geary Community Hospital with minor injuries. The vehicle sustained disabling damage.

&nbsp;Laura Miller, Junction City High School (JCHS) Future Farmers of America (FFA) instructor,&nbsp; Miller told the JC Breakfast Optimist Club Wednesday that the FFA was chartered in 2018 after not existing at the high school for 16 years. 

Five FFA students that were in attendance make up an Ag Issues Forum Team and will participate in a state competition in June. They study local, regional, and state issues to present facts and perceptions of both sides of an issue, but do not take sides themselves. “They let the audience decide”, Miller said.

Students shared perspectives by role playing. Mikayla and Kourtney Dibben were moderators; Gabby Brown was the Economic Developer; Lilye Cartwright role played as an activist and Ava Oentrich was a local citizen.

Following the presentation, club members asked questions about the topic that focused on the proposed slaughterhouse being considered on the southwest side of Junction City.

The JCHS FFA members were seeking organizations to practice their skills before the competition in June. If there are other clubs interested in having the students present, contact Laura Miller at Junction City High School.

An unmanned aircraft systems integration and design student at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus</a>&nbsp;will be spending his summer learning and working at one of the biggest technology manufacturers in the world. Thanks to a career fair at the K-State Salina campus in the fall, Houston Griffitts, junior,&nbsp;Salina, used his networking skills and built a professional relationship with a representative from California-based General Atomics. That relationship has blossomed into an internship opportunity for Griffitts this summer with the company. General Atomics is a defense and diversified technologies company that produces unmanned aircraft and provides drone technology such as electro-optical, radar, signals intelligence and automated airborne surveillance and power conversion systems, among other things. The business occupies over 8 million square feet of engineering, laboratory and manufacturing facilities with more than 15,000 employees. General Atomics is also one of K-State Salina's biggest industry partners. "I met the representative from General Atomics and showed him engineering drawings that I have been working on since I was in high school," Griffitts said. "General Atomics is widely regarded as one of the premier drone technology companies and it's a company I have always wanted to work for. I think this experience will not only provide me with hands-on experience in things that I can't learn anywhere else, but also may help me get a job in this industry in the future." The internship will be from June 6 to Aug. 12 and Griffitts will work at General Atomics' headquarters near San Diego. As a machinal engineering intern, he will use the engineering and computer engineering skills he has learned at K-State Salina. K-State Salina annually hosts two career fairs where businesses from different industries come to campus to talk with students. Many students use the experience to build networking skills or even earn an internship or job opportunity. "Career fairs provide students valuable experiences in learning how to network with industry professionals, as well as potentially tightening their interviewing skills," said Josh Doak, with K-State Salina Career Services and Personal Development. "We are committed to ensuring that our students are career-ready by the time they walk across the stage and receive their degrees. Junction City police have reported that they have seen an increase in the number of reports of motor vehicle burglaries since the start of 2022. The&nbsp; map shows the locations where these reports have been made. There is no significant area of concentration and JCPD has had cases across town. 

While several arrests have been made, police said that they continue to receive reports. However, in nearly every instance, the victimized vehicle was left unlocked overnight. Take an extra moment when you get home to ensure that you have locked your vehicle. Furthermore, don't leave any valuables visible in your vehicle, and if possible park in a well-lit area. 

These efforts combined significantly reduce your chances of falling victim to vehicular burglaries.

The best chance for thunderstorms appears to be Thursday evening and overnight.  Some of these storms could be severe.  The next few days appear to be the hottest before temperatures cool as we head into the weekend. Officials reminded you to take it easy in the afternoon heat and stay hydrated.

Be prepared for the heat this week

According to the Geary County Sheriff's Department searchers continued their efforts Monday to recover a suspected drowning victim in the Curtis Creek area on the northwest side of Milford Lake.&nbsp;

Jesse Paul Sockness, 41, Lawrence, disappeared while swimming in the lake on&nbsp; April 30, but so far there has not been any recovery of the suspected victim.

Searchers planned to work from the shoreline Tuesday due to the anticipated high winds and waves at the lake.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded Monday afternoon to U.S. 77 Highway, mile marker 157, for a two-vehicle injury accident. Betty Madrigal, Junction City, was northbound in a Ford Focus when she failed to observe a GMC Yukon driven by Nancy Sasser, Junction City that was stopped in the northbound turn lane, and ran into the rear of Sasser's vehicle.&nbsp;

Minor injuries were reported and treated on scene.&nbsp;

Madrigal's vehicle was removed by a wrecker service and Sasser's vehicle was released to the owner.

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and asking for help with the investigation.

Just before 8p.m. Monday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 900 block of Humboldt Street in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

An 18-year-old victim reported his CLX computer tower was stolen. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,500. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Corvias Foundation has announced the award of college scholarships of up to $50,000 to two children of Corvias employees, Farrah Fleshman of Riley County High School and Gabrielle Ruffin of Junction City High School.

The scholarship program provides recipients with financial support for each of their four years at their academic institution. Students receive a portion of their total scholarship amount each year to pursue their higher education degrees at their selected schools.

Fleshman is an active member of Future Farmers of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Pep Club and Science Club. Fleshman is a peer tutor&nbsp; for Spanish 1 and 2 students, and is a teacher's aide for agriculture mechanics. She also holds a varsity letter in volleyball and softball. She plans to attend Fort Hays State University and major in diagnostic imaging. After graduation she plans to give back to underserved communities by becoming a medical volunteer specializing in diagnostic imaging.

Ruffin is a senior at Junction City High School, and a resident of Ft. Riley. She has participated in softball, basketball and volunteered as a teacher's assistant at her school. She plans to attend Virginia State University to study education and become a high school history teacher.

"Tyson added that county officials are still "kind of left in the dark what's happening there. "

So yes, it is above average, but it is not unheard of.

The earliest we have ever had a reading of 90 degrees or above was March 29, 1967 when the temperature did hit 90 degrees. Roughly 2/3 of the daily high records for the month of April are 90 or above and most of the daily record high temperatures in May are 90 or above. The record highs for this week are: 9th: 97 in 2011, 10th: 92 in 1963, 11th: 97 in 2000, 12th: 97 in 1956 and 13th: 89 in 2001. Given the most recent forecast (early afternoon on Monday) from the National Weather Service, we may not break any of those records.

If you are wondering how long it has been since we’ve had temperatures of 90 or above, well it’s been about seven months. On October 10th we hit 91 degrees; that was 211 days ago. If you are also wondering if this is a harbinger of what’s ahead this summer, it very well could be. At this time, the Climate Prediction Center is forecasting May through September to be above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation.&nbsp;

County Extension Agent tackles the hot weather

Geary County Commissioner Trish Giordano is announcing her intention to file to continue serving as the Geary County Commissioner for District 1.

"For the past 16 months, I have proudly served this community. It has been both challenging and rewarding. My platform in the last election included better transparency, hiring a financial officer, and addressing the issues with our county hospital. Along with the other county commissioners, I have worked hard to get these issues addressed. We currently have a detailed agenda, so the public is aware which topics will be voted on at each meeting. Public comments are allowed at the beginning of each meeting, and meetings are recorded and uploaded so the public can watch at their convenience.

A financial officer was hired a few weeks ago. Tami Robison has jumped right in, digging into the budget, and assisting department heads in preparation for their 2023 budgets. With the assistance of department heads, I would like her to create a capital improvement plan, an equipment improvement plan, as well as a consistent and updated pay plan for our employees. I will report on her progress and recommended changes.

We recently signed a Letter of Intent with Stormont Vail to take over healthcare in our community. This will be a complicated and sensitive process, with the goal of ensuring Geary County has sufficient and quality healthcare.

Our taxes rank as one of the highest in the state of Kansas. We need to take action to get this under control and be held accountable to the taxpayers on how their money is being spent.

I take my position of serving our community seriously. This past year I created a Mental Health Taskforce involving GCH, Pawnee Mental Health, Law Enforcement, and Community Corrections. Having all these organizations represented at the table is key to keeping the lines of communication open. In this way, we can better provide service to our affected population, as well as gain greater efficiency between all agencies.

I am currently working with other community shareholders to start a childcare taskforce. At this time, only 24% of childcare needs are being met in Geary County. This is not just an issue for parents, but an economic development issue, and should be addressed as such. "

Giordano will run for office as an independent candidate. She is currently in her second year on the county commission.&nbsp;

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher Warning: Today’s column is about politics and the upcoming election. Wait, don’t stop reading because what I have to say is especially important and will affect your farm and ranch for a long time to come. I know we are all tired of the constant fighting and mudslinging and what happens in D.C. and Topeka seem to be millions of miles away. I am here to tell you what happens in both cities hits close to home. Over and over, I hear about how good people have turned off politics and just do not participate anymore. Friends, we have to change that. I am begging, no I am pleading, with all of you to get involved in this next election cycle and help make Kansas Farm Bureau’s voice stronger. Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF) has a great record when it comes to endorsing candidates, but this is no time to get complacent. We must make our voice heard. VOTE FBF’s track record when it comes to endorsing candidates is so strong because we involve, or try to involve, every county and every member in the process. I know I sound like a broken record, but our strength is our grassroots. This is the time of the year when VOTE FBF starts to make decisions on which candidates to endorse in both our federal and state elections. The very core of the process is the recommendations from each county. It is important, especially in state races, because you know your candidates, your voice and opinions carry great weight with the VOTE FBF board. It’s true, you need to have at least donated $5to VOTE FBF, but that is a small price to have a say in who makes the rules and laws that affect our livelihoods. We need to make sure we are surfacing and supporting legislators who understand and back agriculture. The only way things will get better is if we are involved, and that has to start now. First, familiarize yourself with the candidates in your area. Read their websites and go meet them. Find out who supports your way of life and who will represent your point of view in D.C. and Topeka. Then go to your county office, pay your $5 if you haven’t already and ask to be part of the process. I will bet you won’t be turned down. I hope there will be deep, meaningful conversations about which candidates to back around those board tables. Most of all, however, I hope we have feedback from all 105 counties. I can’t emphasize how important the next two election cycles are to agriculture and rural Kansas. We must make sure we have a say in which candidates represent us. &nbsp;Get informed and get involved because we need your input to ensure we endorse pragmatic leaders who understand agriculture and rural Kansas. Now is the time to get involved and make sure Kansas Farm Bureau and VOTE FBF continue to be the Voice of Agriculture in the years to come.

I know we are all tired of the constant fighting and mudslinging and what happens in D.C. and Topeka seem to be millions of miles away. I am here to tell you what happens in both cities hits close to home. Over and over, I hear about how good people have turned off politics and just do not participate anymore. Friends, we have to change that. I am begging, no I am pleading, with all of you to get involved in this next election cycle and help make Kansas Farm Bureau’s voice stronger. Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF) has a great record when it comes to endorsing candidates, but this is no time to get complacent. We must make our voice heard. VOTE FBF’s track record when it comes to endorsing candidates is so strong because we involve, or try to involve, every county and every member in the process. I know I sound like a broken record, but our strength is our grassroots. This is the time of the year when VOTE FBF starts to make decisions on which candidates to endorse in both our federal and state elections. The very core of the process is the recommendations from each county. It is important, especially in state races, because you know your candidates, your voice and opinions carry great weight with the VOTE FBF board. It’s true, you need to have at least donated $5to VOTE FBF, but that is a small price to have a say in who makes the rules and laws that affect our livelihoods. We need to make sure we are surfacing and supporting legislators who understand and back agriculture. The only way things will get better is if we are involved, and that has to start now. First, familiarize yourself with the candidates in your area. Read their websites and go meet them. Find out who supports your way of life and who will represent your point of view in D.C. and Topeka. Then go to your county office, pay your $5 if you haven’t already and ask to be part of the process. I will bet you won’t be turned down. I hope there will be deep, meaningful conversations about which candidates to back around those board tables. Most of all, however, I hope we have feedback from all 105 counties. I can’t emphasize how important the next two election cycles are to agriculture and rural Kansas. We must make sure we have a say in which candidates represent us. &nbsp;Get informed and get involved because we need your input to ensure we endorse pragmatic leaders who understand agriculture and rural Kansas.
