St. Tabitha Chapter #75 O.E.S. has contributed $80 to the I.C.A.R.E. organization to assist in purchasing items needed for the 12th Street Community Garden.

Once school is back in session students will visit the garden to help older adult seniors in caring for their raised bed gardens. Students will also receive service learning hours and enhance their social skills. The garden is being managed by the I.C.A.R.E. organization.

I.C.A.R.E. receives a donation for the Community Garden

Junction City Commissioners did not vote Tuesday night to authorize operational funding to help Geary Community Hospital reach the end of the year. It means no funds are forthcoming to grant a request from the hospital for $6.5 million to help GCH make it to Jan. 1. At that time an agreement will kick in with Stormont Vail Health to oversee the facility.

Commissioner Pat Landes stated, "Fact of the matter is we just don't have the money." Mayor Jeff Underhill noted that the city doesn't have $6.5 million to give. "We just don't. And even if we can give the ARPA ( American Recovery Program Act ) funds&nbsp; of our $2.6 million we have left that's no guarantee that the hospital's going to be open on Dec. 31, which means we just set that money on fire, and that's not us being good stewards for the community." City Manager Allen Dinkel echoed a similar sentiment on lack of available city funding.

There was discussion on whether the City could use American Recovery Program Act money to help with some of the expenses but that was not recommended by staff.&nbsp;

Attorney Peter Rombold, representing the hospital and county, explained&nbsp; that if the $6.5 million is not enough the County would make sure the City's money is not burned but it will cost more ( in interest costs ).

Rombold explained the County provided up to $3.5 million in ARPA funding of their own to the hospital, and found $1.7 million to make emergency repairs to Geary Community this year. Other future facility repairs required in the future combined with the lack of city funding could run the total for the county to $31 million in bond proceeds including $13.9 million in interest costs.

The next step for the county remains to be determined.

Geary Community Hospital needs approximately six million dollars to keep the hospital open and functioning&nbsp; for the remainder of the year. On Jan. 1st a transition to Stormont Vail Health should be complete.

On Tuesday night the Chair of the Hospital Board of Trustees, Theresa Bramlage, will make a presentation to the Junction City Commission on the pending transition of GCH to Stormont Vail Health.

The County has provided up to $3.5 million in American Recovery Program Act funding and there would be other building improvement commitments. The City is being asked to provide ARPA funds as well but there are concerns. City Manager Allen Dinkel noted in his agenda explanation on this issue that he doesn't feel this is an allowed use of the City's ARPA funds and he does not believe that that the City should take this risk and later have to recover the funds.

Much of the City funding in reserve is targeted for future required improvements to the wastewater plants and to meet all federal and state requirements. If the General Fund were used to provide money to the hospital the City would have to reduce expenditures extensively.&nbsp;

Dinkel noted that the city commission has supported the importance of healthcare in the city and supports the transition of GCH to Stormont Vail. Potential City funding for the hospital now will be a city commission decision.

The city commission meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 701 North Jefferson.

Geary Community Hospital wants funding from Junction City

Longtime member says youth join 4-H for the projects, but stay because of the people&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H</a>&nbsp;program is known for helping youth cultivate skills in leadership, citizenship and many other project disciplines, but that may not be the main reason some members stick with the program.&nbsp;

Enter Kathryn Tremblay, a former member and current advisor to the Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council.&nbsp;

“For me, 4-H has always been about the people I meet and the growth along the way,” she said.&nbsp;“I started 4-H at a young age and loved showing at the fair, but 4-H didn’t change my life until I was about 14 years old and I went to Rock Springs 4-H Camp as a junior counselor for the first time.&nbsp;

“I always had a hard time making friends as a kid, but those few days with my co-counselor (Sydney) changed my life forever. She wouldn’t let me be shy and immediately forced me into friendships with her friends who were also counselors, and we all became really good friends very quickly.”&nbsp;

The point: Many 4-H members join because of the project opportunities, but they stay and get more involved because of their friends.&nbsp;

“Because of the confidence I built up with this small group of 4-H friends, who felt more like family, my confidence grew and I attended other 4-H events, like the Northwest Youth Leadership Forum and Kansas Youth Leadership Forum,” Tremblay said.&nbsp;

In Tremblay’s case, her new friends even helped her reach her position on the Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council. &nbsp;

“Sydney was on the Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council, which plans these (state 4-H) events,” she said. ”I honestly never knew about the Council until Sydney told me about what she was doing.&nbsp;Through her encouragement, I ran for Council and was voted in by the Northwest delegates on my birthday.”&nbsp;

Tremblay noted that 4-H friendships eventually lead to an extensive web of connections that spill from 4-H events to every area of life.&nbsp;

“I loved my time on the Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council, and I especially liked working with our small groups at events and meeting so many different people,” Tremblay said. “I suddenly became that person who knew people at every event I attended, whether it was a school, church or 4-H event.&nbsp;My classmates were baffled, ‘how do you know so many people?’ they would ask me and I was happy to have so many friends to count on.”&nbsp;

Having gained so much from her own 4-H friendships, Tremblay paid it forward by encouraging younger members to grow in their 4-H journey.&nbsp;

She said: “My favorite Youth Council event was Campference, which was an event for 12-14 year-olds who were too old to attend regular camp as a camper, but too young to be a counselor.&nbsp;It’s also one of the most important age ranges for retaining members in 4-H.&nbsp;

“I met several young 4-Hers at Campference and had a great time being a mentor for them and helping them to have a great time and learn about the various opportunities available in Kansas 4-H. I encouraged several of them to run for Youth Council.&nbsp;All it took was for me to say ‘hey, I think you would be really great at this.’”&nbsp;

Tremblay said one of the seeds she planted took root in a particularly meaningful way.&nbsp;

“I will never forget my last time attending the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum as a member of the Youth Council,” she said. “A few of those delegates from Campference applied for Youth Council.”&nbsp;

She said one in particular, Greyson, asked her for help on his application.&nbsp;

“I had been really involved in helping him on his way to Council,” Tremblay said. “One of my good friends on Youth Council was in Greyson’s interview room and after the interviews he came up to me and said ‘You’ll never believe what Greyson said about you. When they asked him who his role model was.&nbsp; He said it was you.’&nbsp;

Tremblay described her reaction as “stunned.”&nbsp;

“I had never had such a wonderful compliment from someone. Greyson did go on to be elected to Youth Council, along with several others from that Campference group.”&nbsp;

Over her years in 4-H, Tremblay said she has built many meaningful relationships that have led to growth in her own involvement as well as encouraging the next generation of leaders. For her, 4-H is about people. &nbsp;

“The relationships we make with others are more important than almost anything else we do,” she said. “4-H isn’t just about ribbons or premiums.&nbsp;I judge at local fairs, and when a 4-Her is really successful, they almost always can tell me who has helped them to learn and grow in their project.&nbsp;

“That’s why people are the most important part of 4-H and life.&nbsp;We grow with each other and because of each other.&nbsp;Surround yourself with those who make you better and you, in turn, will make others better.”&nbsp;

4-H'er says she values friendships most

4-H events began Monday at the Geary County Free Fair. In the&nbsp; breeding goat show Kaycee Butler had the grand champion and Tava Gustafson the reserve grand champion.

In the 4-H Sheep Show Kacey Butler had the grand champion and Emmy Gfeller the Reserve Grand Champion.&nbsp;

Other aspects of the fair ranged from clothing to the 4-H food sale.

The fair continues Tuesday through Thursday.&nbsp;

WOODSON COUNTY—A Kansas woman died and another was injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Monday in Woodson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Ranger driven by Sandra E. Campbell, 54, Yates Center, was southbound on U.S. 75 five miles north of U.S. 54.

The pickup and the oversized load of a northbound 2012 Kenworth Semi driven by William M. Allen, 56, Manhattan, collided. The impact sent the pickup into a counter-clockwise rotation. 

The Ford crossed the centerline into the northbound lanes and collided with a northbound 2016 Ram driven by Juda A. Lake, 69, Manhattan.&nbsp; The Ford overturned in the east ditch. The Dodge came to rest in the northbound lane facing east.

Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center.&nbsp; EMS transported Lake to Stormont Vail. Allen was not injured.

One dead, Manhattan woman injured in 3-vehicle crash

Geary County Sheriff's authorities said Monday afternoon that they have arrested Cameron Lawson, Fort Riley, in connection with the death of his wife, Enfinnity Hayes Lawson, on Oct. 3rd, 2021.

The Sheriff's Department confirmed Cameron Lawson was arrested on a Geary County District Court warrant issued for his arrest and that charged him with First Degree Murder and Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder.&nbsp; Sheriff Dan Jackson noted that there was an "extensive investigation,&nbsp; involved numerous agencies because it was difficult.&nbsp; He was a suspect for quite some time in the case but it took time to get to the point where it was time to make an arrest."

Enfinnity Hayes Lawson, 22, Fort Riley, was identified by authorities as the victim in a fatal shooting that occurred Oct. 3, 2021&nbsp; at the Milford State Park Group Shelter. At the time authorities were told that the victim was approached by a man described as 6'1 or taller dressed in all black who approached the victim and her husband and attempted to rob the couple at gun point. There was a gun shot and she fell to the ground. She was driven to Geary Community Hospital by her husband but later died of her injuries.

The Sheriff's Office along with the Army Criminal Investigations Division arrested Cameron Lawson at the Sheriff's Office. He is being held at the Geary County Detention Center. His bond has been set at one million dollars.

The S-O thanked the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Bureau of Investigations, Wichita Police Department and Army Criminal Investigations Division for their assistance in the case.

This matter is still an ongoing investigation and authorities are asking that if anyone has information about this case to contact the Sheriff's Department at 785-238-2261 or Geary County Crime Stoppers at 785-762-8477.

Authorities report an arrest in the Enfinnity Hayes Lawson homicide case

Junction City / Geary County United way has released a list of items needed for their Stuff the Bus effort to provide school supplies for needy children in Geary USD 475 and Chapman USD 473.&nbsp;

Items in great need include two-inch and three-inch ring binders, black dry erase markers, disinfecting wipes, composition books, number two pencils and mechanical, facial tissue, three by three sticky notes, pencil pouch and case and headphones.&nbsp;

Other items include crayola crayons - 24 pack, gallon / quart freezer bags, glue sticks / glue - 8 ounce, large pink erasers, plain pocket&nbsp; folders and yellow highlighters.

You may drop off supplies at the United Way Office at 139 E. 8th Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be collection days on Saturdays, July 23, 30 and Aug. 6 at Dillon's and at the Wal-Mart Super Center.

Additional drop off locations Monday through Friday include Intrust Bank, Exchange Bank, Sunflower Bank, Central National Bank and KS State Bank, Dillon's, the Wal-Mart Center and the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce. Adopt-A-Backpack contributions can only be dropped off at United Way and KS State Bank.

Just after 5 p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report for aggravated assault and domestic battery in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Officers listed a 39-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man as both the victims and suspects.

It was reported the woman pulled a knife on the man and punched him in the chest. The male battered the woman.

Police arrested Stephanie Thornburg, 39, of Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated assault and domestic battery. She was in custody early Monday at the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $10,000, according to the RCPD Activity report.

It’s ironic how I checked my weather app multiple times daily as we harvested wheat in June. We wanted to get the crop out of the fields before the summer storms rolled in, which always offers the potential of damaging hail or winds and could put harvest on hold while things would need to dry up.&nbsp; &nbsp; Now that harvest is over, I check my weather app multiple times daily to see if there is a small chance of rain or lower temperatures in the July forecast. &nbsp; No matter the number of times I tap on the weather app on my phone, no matter what 10-day forecast I look at, and no matter who the meteorologist is on the television, the triple digits have not budged, and I’ve accepted that we’re in for an excessively hot, dry spell. &nbsp; The crops currently growing on our farm are on a combination of dryland and irrigated acres. The sorghum, corn and soybeans growing on our dryland acres will soon show how much they can truly tolerate drought. The crops on our irrigated acres will also show their heat tolerance.&nbsp; &nbsp; While I am concerned for the crops that will not see a break in hot, dry temperatures as they attempt to grow, I’m incredibly concerned about the animals and the people. &nbsp; While there will be many people who will seek refuge in air-conditioned environments, farmers and ranchers will continue to be out in the elements ensuring their livestock have plenty of water and the irrigation systems are maintained and continue to run.&nbsp;They will also be out in these elements when things go down and need fixed.&nbsp; &nbsp; Early in my marriage I remember spending a couple very long, hot days helping my husband and father-in-law repair an irrigation well in triple-digit heat. While we made sure to stay hydrated, the heat was oppressive. It had a toll on my body, and it took me a number of days to “get back to normal.” &nbsp; Aside from the continued work farmers and ranchers will be doing on their operations during this heat, youth fairs are right around the corner. As a kid, I always looked forward to taking my cattle to the summer fair.&nbsp; &nbsp; It was fun to live in the barns for a few days with my friends during fair time. We’d sit and play cards on our showboxes while our cattle rested with misters and industrial fans pointed on them. There was always an endless supply of ice-cold drinks in cans and pouches stored in large coolers nearby. The random pop-up water fights in the wash racks in the evenings after the animals had been fed, watered and tied out for the night was also guaranteed. &nbsp; While I hope the kids enjoy their fair experiences this year, I know they will be working extra hard to keep their livestock hydrated and cooled while they also spend their days in this heat. &nbsp; During this heat spell, it is my hope that your loved ones, co-workers and employees are staying hydrated. Keep extra water on hand – including in your vehicles. Pace yourself and know when it's time to take a break and then take it. Monitor those who spend extra time outdoors and offer grace to those who come home at night exhausted from the heat while caring for the crops and livestock.&nbsp; &nbsp; This season shall pass; but while we’re living in it, keep track of others and yourself.&nbsp;

The menu will include biscuits &amp; gravy, eggs, sausage, ham, tater tots, orange juice and coffee. The cost will be $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.&nbsp;

The breakfast will be dine-in, carry-out or delivery. It is open to the public.

East defeated the West 8-4 in the Mid Plains League Conner Taylor All Star game at Rathert Field Saturday night. Several hundred fans enjoyed the contest featuring players from six summer collegiate teams, including the Junction City Brigade.

Michael Moore, League Commissioner, said the fans turned out for the game. "Junction City always does a great job. It is amazing coming here, what a venue. " Several hundred fans turned out for the event, which also included a home run derby, fireworks display, numerous booths and vendors ranging from the Rusty Bus Photo Booth to face painting. Konza Prairie Community Health Center, Valley View Senior Life and the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation were all represented with booths as part of a pregame emphasis on healthcare.

Moore said the players enjoy coming to Rathert Field. "They enjoy the activities that are planned, it's meaningful. We support mental health awareness and&nbsp; then we have a great all-star game."

Nelson Vera, Sabetha Bravos, was named the game MVP after going 3-4 at the plate with four RBI's and a home run. He also won the Home Run Derby held before the game. For his efforts Vera, from Venezuela, will receive two custom made bats that will be custom engraved.&nbsp;

Junction City Brigade coach Brandon Bachar was the head coach for the winning west team. "That's awesome. The All Star game is a really good experience for everybody and it's an even better feeling when you come out on top."

JCPD schedules summer block party for Aug. 5

A scorching hot Friday cooled down with a light breeze in time for the opening night of the Junction City Rodeo. Several hundred people were in attendance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Daryl Blocker, Rodeo Association President, was a little surprised at the turnout because of the heat in recent days. "You look around, looks like about every seat is full. "

Wyatt Kraft, Abbyville, KS, served as a pick-up man for his grandfather, Steve Kraft, who provides the livestock for the rodeo. Wyatt described his job. "When a horse starts out of the chute it bucks, the horse can bounce off you and it won't affect the rider, and as soon as the buzzer goes you have to take the rider off, gather your horse up. Kraft explained that sometimes the job is tricky.&nbsp;

This is an open rodeo at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena just off South Spring Valley Road. "When a horse starts out of the chute it bucks, the horse can bounce off you and it won't affect the rider, and as soon as the buzzer goes you have to take the rider off, gather your horse up. Kraft explained that sometimes the job is tricky.&nbsp;<figure>

28th annual Junction City Rodeo gets under way

Forty units of blood were collected Friday during a Red Cross blood drive at the Junction City Municipal Building, three above the goal for the day.

The amount collected for the two-day blood drive reached 139 units.

There is a Red Cross blood drive on Friday until 1 p.m. at the Municipal Building. On day one of the drive on Thursday organizers confirmed that 59 units of blood were donated. The goal for that day was 61 units.

Eighteen teams competed in Triple Trivia Thursday night at Spin City in Junction City. Their purpose was to raise money for a new public library project in the community.

Susan Moyer, Library Executive Director, said there was good underwriting for the event. "We had good ticket sales and did a 20/20 drawing as well as a series of gift baskets so we made money in four different ways here. "

The event featured teams of three who will vie in three single elimination rounds to see who would be crowned the Triple Trivia pop culture champions of 2022. Marc Felts, Jimmy Jenkins and Alex Becker comprised the winning team.

Just before 11a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 2600 block of W. 56th Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp;

A 76-year-old man reported his green Yamaha Bear Tracker 250 ATV was taken. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,000.&nbsp;
