RILEY COUNTY —A Riley County man was injured in an accident just after 8a.m. Saturday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2007 Chevy Impala driven by Marion Mzouch, 63, Randolph, was westbound in the 13000 block of Fancy Creek Road.

The car left the road and went airborne over a driveway entrance. EMS transported Mazouch to Via Christi for treatment of a lower back fracture.

Gusty winds blew the box off of an empty semi box trailer on I-70 approximately nine miles east of Junction City Sunday morning, According to the Geary County Sheriff's Department, James Carr, Independence, MO, was east bound on the interstate in a Kenworth semi-truck pulling the trailer when the winds blew the box off, causing it to land in the roadway and slide into the center median. That, in turn, threw debris into the west bound lanes and strike a Toyota four-runner driven by Charles Drum, Denver, CO. 

No injuries were reported. The accident was reported at 10:47 a.m.

Members of the Class of 2022 will be the first at JCHS to receive their diplomas at the new high school. Commencement is scheduled at 3 p.m. this Sunday in the Main Gymnasium

Dr. Reginald Eggleston, USZD 475 Superintendent, said officials feel that the facility is large enough to house all of those that want to attend. "But we d have some overflow rooms set up in the event that the numbers exceed what the gym can contain."

Eggleston added that the celebration at JCHS graduation is actually a district-wide celebration because students have matriculated through multiple schools to reach this point.

New era begins for JCHS commencement

Junction City leaders have been informed that the demolition of the East 6th Street Viaduct Bridge over Monroe Street and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks is slated to begin on or about July 13. City Manager Allen Dinkel provided the information. "KDOT is handling, that because Department of Transportation, because that is a highway route, Highway 57. "

That traffic route is the primary connecting link between Junction City and Grandview Plaza.

In March KDOT announced the award of the bid for replacement of the bridge. King Construction Company Inc. &amp; Subsidiaries, Hesston, KS received the bid of $15, 957, 363.42.

USD 475 has been looking at creation of a grades 6-12 alternative program at the H.D. Karns Building. Students with behavior and discipline challenges at both Junction City High School and Junction City Middle School could be sent there. There was conversation at the recent Board of Education meeting and there was approval from the Board to beef up the staff with an assistant principal and four more core teachers.&nbsp;

But USD 475Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston makes it clear that there are good students at the Karns Building. "What we're trying to do is utilize that facility for as many alternative programs as we possibly can." I think the conversation surrounded some of the students that we have experienced some behavior problems with this past year, and so we have an alternative program for those students to help them return back to the school." 

Eggleston added that the ultimate goal is to help all of the district's students be successful. "So I don't want people to feel like we have nothing but criminals over there because that's not the case. We just have some students who have been misguided, misdirected, and we need to assist them with getting back on track so that they can be productive citizens." Eggleston added that's the goal that District officials have in mind.

One of the positive alternatives at the Karns Building is the Magnet Program. Eggleston said that program is "strictly for students who want assistance or enrichment when it comes to their academics. " The superintendent added the purpose of that program is to help students make preparations for ninth grade. "We want to do everything that we can to help students be prepared academically, emotionally so that they're ready to take on the rigors of a high school curriculum, as well as be ready to make good decisions when they're in a large environment." Eggleston said the District is proud of the accomplishments of the Magnet Program and there have not been any issues with that program.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating&nbsp; after a chase with a stolen vehicle called off the search for the driver over the vehicle. Investigators have learned the identity of the driver will issue a warrant for his arrest.

On Saturday afternoon, authorities alerted the public to&nbsp;an increased police presence in the area of 6th and Lincoln in St. George, according to a social media report.

This is the result of a pursuit that ended at that location where the subjects fled after wrecking the stolen vehicle they were driving.

One suspect was in custody and police were looking for the driver until they called off the search just before 4p.m.

Police described him as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing blue jeans, a white shirt, brown hair, and a ponytail. If you see this subject please call 911.

County Commission sets the agenda

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army must put more money and effort into repairing poorly maintained and substandard base housing for military service members and their families, U.S. senators demanded Thursday, amid persistent reports that mold and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/467004ec107a4694ba211c1777efbd2c">other issues threaten troops' health</a>.

One after another, members of the Senate Armed Services Committee pressed top Army leaders during a hearing to spend money on military housing in their states.

“We have all heard the horror stories of substandard on base housing, military families across the country, living with black mold and collapsed ceilings and electrical and fire hazards and a lot of other substandard conditions,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. “We need to fix our shameful military housing problem, and we need to do it as quickly as possible.”

Army Secretary Christine Wormuth repeatedly told senators that housing is a priority, but that it competes for funding in the Army and defense budgets with other key needs, including equipment and weapons modernization and training. She said that due to the Army's vast size, it's impossible to get to all the problems in one year.

The Army, she said, is requesting nearly $2 billion for military housing in the 2023 proposed budget, and has a 10-year infrastructure plan. That plan would have the Army invest $27 billion in infrastructure over the next decade.

“We have a very large footprint with a large number of bases. All of them have housing. And I would love nothing more than to be able to renovate all of the housing around the country that needs to be renovated in a single year. But we are not able to do that,” she said.

The housing focus comes on the heels of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-announces-global-resolution-criminal-and-civil-investigations-privatized">a massive fraud case involving one of the largest providers</a>&nbsp;of military housing in the United States. Balfour Beatty Communities LLC, which oversees about 1,700 homes at bases in Georgia and Texas, faced widespread claims of negligence and failure to do repairs. The company pleaded guilty in December to committing fraud against the United States from 2013 to 2019, was ordered to pay $65.4 million in fines and restitution and was placed under an independent compliance monitor for three years.

A Senate panel earlier this year found that the company continues to respond inadequately to mold and other structural problems.

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., criticized Army leaders for not addressing problems at Fort Leonard Wood, saying he's been given conflicting reports on what, if any, housing replacements would be funded at the base in his state.

“I was told last year there were $341 million that were going to be allocated towards replacing housing. Then I was told later only $50 million would be available to Fort Leonard Wood. And then I was told after that it would be zero,” Hawley told Wormuth during the hearing. “You can imagine I’m not very happy about it.”

Wormuth promised to nail down the correct answer, but again warned that repair money for the base may not be in the budget for fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.

“We try to look where the need is most pressing and sort of develop a schedule,” she said. “But I’d be happy to look into it. And I understand that you’re frustrated hearing different things at different times.”

Officials noted that the Army submitted a separate request to Congress that outlined projects that aren't funded in the budget that would also be priorities, and thy include an additional $330 million for housing issues.

That additional money, said Warren, should be included in the Army's base budget, if, indeed, housing is a priority as leaders say. And she questioned why the $1.9 billion total for housing in the main budget request is 40% smaller than the current budget would provide.

According to the Army, the $1.9 billion budget request is actually a 12% increase over last year's request. Congress, however, voted to add nearly $1.5 billion in military construction funds to that request, resulting in a total of more than $3.2 billion for the year. Congress has not yet acted on the proposed budget, so has not added funds.

Gen. James McConville, the chief of staff of the Army, told senators the Army is doing all it can to ensure quality housing and other services for troops. “When our soldiers get the call that it’s time to deploy, we want them laser focused on their mission, knowing that their families will be well taken care of at home,” McConville said.

The company pleaded guilty in December to committing fraud against the United States from 2013 to 2019, was ordered to pay $65.4 million in fines and restitution and was placed under an independent compliance monitor for three years.A Senate panel earlier this year found that the company continues to respond inadequately to mold and other structural problems.Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., criticized Army leaders for not addressing problems at Fort Leonard Wood, saying he's been given conflicting reports on what, if any, housing replacements would be funded at the base in his state.“I was told last year there were $341 million that were going to be allocated towards replacing housing. Then I was told later only $50 million would be available to Fort Leonard Wood. Operation Veteran Connection is recommended for all Veterans, active military members near their separation date, family members, and the public interested in obtaining information about state and federal Veteran benefits, and how to apply for them. 

Accredited Veteran Service Representatives will be on site to assist individuals with all types of disability and pension claims. Federal VA personnel will be available to assist with applying for healthcare benefits and/or check the status of an existing claim. These professionals will also provide readjustment counseling and Veteran Readiness and Employment services.

Several state government agencies, Veteran Service Organizations, and Non-Profits will meet with Veterans to offer comprehensive assessment of education, skills, and abilities. These same agencies will provide in–depth interviewing and evaluation to identify employment barriers, discuss appropriate employment and career goals, and share information on many other state Veteran benefits.

Dan Yunk served as superintendent of the school district for nearly 20 years. Jordan will be presented with the award at the College of Education's commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in Bramlage Coliseum on K-State's Manhattan campus. There are 6.4 million head of cattle in Kansas. That was one of the facts presented to approximately 600 third grade students from USD 475 during Ag Day at the Geary County 4-H fairgrounds on Friday. They learned about topics ranging from livestock to wheat.

Ginger Kopfer, 4-H Extension Agent noted that the students are learning where their food comes from. "So we're learning about cattle and pigs, sheep and goats. There was also education about corn, soybeans and wheat.

Kopfer thought the students really enjoyed seeing the animals. "So being able to see a pig in person which they may have never done, particularly maybe sheep and goats that they've never seen either."

The Ag Day programs are taught by 4-H members and Extension Educational Unit members from Geary County.

Junction City / Geary County United Way honors the Volunteer of the Year

Dave Martinez has been named the principal of Eisenhower Middle 
School in Manhattan. He currently serves as the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director
 at Eisenhower. He has served in that position since 2014. Prior to 
that, Mr. Martinez served as an Assistant Principal at Junction City 
Middle School. He has also been a physical education teacher in Garden 
City, KS and Junction City, KS.

Mr. Martinez has an Associate of Science degree from Garden City 
Community College, a Bachelor of Science degree in K-12 Physical 
Education from Emporia State University and a Master of Science in 
Education Administration from Kansas State University.

"I feel extremely blessed and excited for the opportunity to serve 
the staff, students, and families of EMS,” states Martinez. “I’m 
committed to encouraging all students that they have the potential to

MANHATTAN — Imagine cattle ranching without traditional fencing and the costly, time-consuming fencing repairs. Two Kansas State University ecologists are working to make that vision a reality while benefiting streams and birds. It's part of a multi-partner research project using virtual electronic cattle fencing in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Virtual fencing is accomplished through special cattle collars and advanced GPS tracking that can be used to create exclusion areas or to move cattle without the need for physical fence lines. <a href="https://www.nature.org/en-us/" target="_blank">The Nature Conservancy</a>&nbsp;is partnering with Kansas State University, National Park Service, Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition and private producers to determine if virtual fencing can help managers improve conservation, business and soil carbon outcomes on working cattle ranches in the United States.&nbsp;K-State&nbsp;received a $435,000 grant from The Nature Conservancy to study the conservation aspects of the project in Kansas. This work by&nbsp;K-State&nbsp;is part of a $2 million project at three sites that is also assessing how soil carbon and ranching outcomes may be improved with innovative management options made possible by virtual fencing. Additional project sites are located in Colorado and New Mexico. The Flint Hills is home to some of the last remaining tallgrass prairie in the U.S. During the five-year study,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/biology/about/people/faculty/boyle-a/" target="_blank">Alice Boyle</a>, associate professor of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/biology" target="_blank">biology</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/biology/about/people/faculty/dodds/" target="_blank">Walter Dodds</a>,&nbsp;university distinguished professor of biology, will serve as the&nbsp;K-State&nbsp;co-principal investigators. They are seeking to understand how grazing practices created by virtual fencing affect vegetation, watersheds and grassland birds on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nps.gov/tapr/index.htm" target="_blank">Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve</a>&nbsp;and the neighboring Mushrush Red Angus ranch near Strong City. The experiments will allow Boyle to assess the impacts of virtual fencing on the habitat of grassland-dependent birds, including the greater prairie chicken and the Henslow sparrow. Dodds will study the effects on riparian zones — the areas bordering bodies of water — and water quality. "It's a great opportunity for us to test how to use virtual fencing to protect the waterways in the Flint Hills," Dodds said. "With the management concerns of the tallgrass prairie and the Flint Hills, both ranchers and researchers are looking at how to align the goals of conservation and cattle production." Cattle grazing mimics the original grazing of bison, which is an important part of the prairie ecosystem. Grazing helps to create the habitat patches tallgrass birds need and is also a land management tool. This project will help uncover potential new conservation and land management practices by precisely controlling cattle movement, according to researchers. "Grazers are really an important part of the system," Boyle said. "Many of the grassland birds need the cattle. It's all in the details — the amounts, the locations and the times. This project is going to be a huge advance to be able to manage within pastures at fine spatial scales to achieve the vegetation structure the birds need." The Nature Conservancy strives to advance the use of land management tools and practices that improve prairie habitats and to support the adoption of best practices by ranchers, resource professionals and other land managers. "In the area of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve where we will use the virtual fence, we are not able to use a full three-year patch burn grazing rotation," said Anthony Capizzo, Flint Hills initiative manager with The Nature Conservancy. "This project has the potential to increase habitat diversity types to create a more complex prairie with positive effects on ranching management and economic viability." Mushrush Red Angus, a private ranch owned by Daniel Mushrush, adjoins the preserve and is a partner in the research project. Mushrush is looking to support The Nature Conservancy's conversation goals but also to ensure his business thrives. "We are using 21st-century technology to solve more than one problem at a time," Mushrush said. "By using these collars on both sides of the property lines, we protect prairie chicken leks and riparian zones and at the same time, we are grazing more efficiently and intelligently."&nbsp;

They are seeking to understand how grazing practices created by virtual fencing affect vegetation, watersheds and grassland birds on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nps.gov/tapr/index.htm" target="_blank">Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve</a>&nbsp;and the neighboring Mushrush Red Angus ranch near Strong City. The experiments will allow Boyle to assess the impacts of virtual fencing on the habitat of grassland-dependent birds, including the greater prairie chicken and the Henslow sparrow. Dodds will study the effects on riparian zones — the areas bordering bodies of water — and water quality. "It's a great opportunity for us to test how to use virtual fencing to protect the waterways in the Flint Hills," Dodds said. "With the management concerns of the tallgrass prairie and the Flint Hills, both ranchers and researchers are looking at how to align the goals of conservation and cattle production." Cattle grazing mimics the original grazing of bison, which is an important part of the prairie ecosystem. Grazing helps to create the habitat patches tallgrass birds need and is also a land management tool. This project will help uncover potential new conservation and land management practices by precisely controlling cattle movement, according to researchers. "Grazers are really an important part of the system," Boyle said. "Many of the grassland birds need the cattle. It's all in the details — the amounts, the locations and the times. This project is going to be a huge advance to be able to manage within pastures at fine spatial scales to achieve the vegetation structure the birds need." The Nature Conservancy strives to advance the use of land management tools and practices that improve prairie habitats and to support the adoption of best practices by ranchers, resource professionals and other land managers. "In the area of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve where we will use the virtual fence, we are not able to use a full three-year patch burn grazing rotation," said Anthony Capizzo, Flint Hills initiative manager with The Nature Conservancy. "This project has the potential to increase habitat diversity types to create a more complex prairie with positive effects on ranching management and economic viability." Mushrush Red Angus, a private ranch owned by Daniel Mushrush, adjoins the preserve and is a partner in the research project. Mushrush is looking to support The Nature Conservancy's conversation goals but also to ensure his business thrives. "We are using 21st-century technology to solve more than one problem at a time," Mushrush said. "By using these collars on both sides of the property lines, we protect prairie chicken leks and riparian zones and at the same time, we are grazing more efficiently and intelligently."&nbsp;

Water will be shut off to Cedar Estates and Acorn Resorts. Work crews are in route and will get it back on as soon as possible.&nbsp;

The water main break in the 6700 block of Old Milford Road on Wednesday was fixed.

Fresh fruit and vegetables to sweets are among the many items that will be sold at the Farmers Market at the JC Naz Church parking lot, 1025 South Washington, in Junction City during the coming months. The first one of the season is scheduled Thursday from 4-7 p.m.

The Farmers Markets are held every Thursday through October.
