Geary County Sheriff's Department reports include a response by Deputies to a rollover accident in the 5000 block of Skiddy Road Thursday evening. 

Carmine J. Mancinelli-Irey, Junction City, was traveling south in a 2016 Chevrolet HHR when a deer entered the roadway, causing him to swerve. The vehicle rolled over into a ditch. No injuries were reported. A wrecker service responded and towed the vehicle.

Starting out playing in the beer tents when Country Stampede was in Manhattan, Travis Marvin has played on every stage.

Travis Marvin is an Ottawa, Kansas native, who has been performing in the Kansas City &nbsp;area and has previously toured with Aaron Lewis.

In 2021, Travis performed on the main stage at Country Stampede, for the third time.

For 2022, Travis is keeping the party going on the After Party stage.

🎥: Kansas-native plays Country Stampede for 10th time

Macie Muto is the Queen and Logan Nabus the King for Geary County 4-H for the coming year. They were crowned Thursday night at the end of the 4-H Public Revue.

Muto has her goals in mind. "I want to promote 4-H and I want to be a role model to the younger members." She enjoys 4-H and said the Fair is the best part of the experience.

Nabus has been in 4-H for 10 years. "I'm excited to be&nbsp; the king this year and try to be a good role model for the young kids, keep everybody engaged in 4-H."

The 4-H Public Revue occurs just ahead of the Geary County Free Fair which opens Sunday and continues through next Thursday.

Geary County 4-H Queen and King are crowned

Ark Wrecking Company, Tulsa, Oklahoma, began the demolition of the concrete grandstands at Al Simpler Stadium in Junction City Thursday. The upper portion was knocked down first. 

Spokesman Robert Fisk said they used an excavator and careful precision to do the job.&nbsp;

Fisk said they started at the top and worked to the bottom of the stadium, "to keep it safe and keep things coming down the way we want to." The grandstands were already crumbling. "Yes, it was in bad shape. It's pretty easy to come down."

Ark Wrecking is a subcontractor for Hutton Construction, the general contractor for the demolition project. Tim Chadd, Superintendent with Hutton said that they didn't know what to expect on tearing down the grandstand until they got into it. "So far it's been a really smooth process. We had a hand crew come in and take out the ticket boxes and the press box and now we're just down to steel and concrete. That material will be recycled.

The grandstand removal is part of an overall to demolish the old Junction City High School now that a new JCHS is operating on the west side of the city. 

The turfed football field and running track at the Al Simpler Stadium site will be retained and kept in use in the future. The stadium that served as the home for Blue Jay football, track and field, and in later years JCHS boys and girls soccer, first opened in 1965.&nbsp;

Concrete grandstand at Al Simpler Stadium is taken down

SALINE COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported 2002 Mercury Sable driven by Andrew Q. Flynn, 41, Abilene, was eastbound on Interstate 70 ten miles east of Salina. The car entered the south ditch, struck construction equipment and overturned.

2 hospitalized after car strikes construction equipment on I-70

Barton Community College at Fort Riley student Avrey Thoman was recently awarded the $500 “Stay the Course” grant from educational resource company John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

Thoman has attended Barton since Oct. 2019 and graduated in May. She is transferring to Fort Hays State University this fall to major in law and minor in criminal justice and will receive a certificate in international relations.

“I cannot express my gratitude in words,” she said. “I am also extremely grateful for Janet Balk, Amber Bebout, and Melissa Stevens. All three of them have helped me tremendously during my time at Barton. In their own ways, each of them has devoted some of their time to me and to help me. I would not be where I am academically had it not been for them. I would also like to thank my former English and Creative Writing teacher Kase Johnston. He helped me find my passion for writing again and even though it’s been a while since I’ve been in his classes, I’m still grateful.”

Barton Adjunct Math Instructor Amber Bebout nominated Thoman for the grant.

“When I first heard about the grant, I was interested in nominating a student as I know many students are in some tough spots right now with the pandemic and just day to day life occurrences,” she said. “When I first met Avrey, I immediately saw in her a determined, hardworking student. In the last year, I have seen her persevere through some tough situations and I know how important earning her degree is to her and what this support would mean for her. When I received the email notifying me that Avrey had been selected, I was so excited because Avrey has never lost sight of her desire to continue her studies despite the tough situations that have arisen for her. So, this is a bright spot on the horizon for her and she is so deserving of this grant.”

Wiley Account Manager Debbi Sewade said the program awarded 200 students $500 scholarships to help alleviate stress and clear pathways to their success during an unprecedented school year filled with hardships for many due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The grants are meant to address whatever challenges were holding students back, whether it be lack of technology, illness, reduction in work hours, etc.,” she said. “I was so delighted that a student from your school was selected. I hope this small gesture by Wiley makes a difference in the students’ lives.”

Thoman said she faced many hardships due to the pandemic.

Barton at Fort Riley student receives grant

Support continues for the Aging Well Senior Living at the Spring Valley Campus’s capital campaign. Recently, Kansas Gas Service through the ONE Gas Foundation awarded a $21,300 grant towards the Aging Well project.

Kara Titus, Kansas Gas Service Area Manager of Community Relations, helped facilitate the Foundation grant award. “We are proud to support Aging Well and the innovative and intentional services their campus will provide to Junction City seniors,” said Titus.&nbsp;

Like Kansas Gas Service, Aging Well has a mission to provide more than just minimum required services. Aging Well will build a senior campus with the small home design that creates an environment that is intentional rather than institutional. Elders’ lives will be purposeful rather than passive, and staff will focus on person rather than process. Skilled nursing and Assisted Living services will be provided.&nbsp;

The donation from Kansas Gas Service helps Aging Well move forward towards reaching their $3.5 million fundraising goal.

According to the Sheriff's Department Anthony Petrusky, Milford, was traveling in a Volkswagen Passat when he attempted to make an unsafe U-turn and was struck by a Ford Edge driven by Tiffany Junghans, Milford.&nbsp;

Both Petrusky and Junghans were treated and released on scene by EMS. Both vehicles were towed away by a wrecker service.

"We've done a lot down there and each year we try to do more."

Rodeo time each night is 7:30 p.m. Friday night will be Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night. The crowning of the Rodeo Queen is scheduled Saturday night, which will also be Red, White and Blue Night.

Rodeo clown Ty "Stormin Norman" Stewart will be featured.

Advance tickets are on sale at Orschlens in Junction City. They are $9 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-12. Those under 5 are admitted free. Tickets will also be sold at the gate for $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12.&nbsp;

According to Nichole Mader, Junction City / Geary County United Way Director,&nbsp; said the kickoff date is July 23. The big yellow bus where you can donate school supplies will be at the Walmart Super Center and at Dillons. Other businesses will have small cardboard buses at their location during the collection effort.

Stuff the Bus collects supplies for USD 475 Geary County and USD 473 Chapman. The Adopt a Backpack program will return this year and you can also make a cash donation.

4.4MW of Ground Mount Solar Advances Army Climate Change Strategy

FORT RILEY, Kan. -&nbsp;<a href="https://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.corvias.com%2F&amp;esheet=52772489&amp;newsitemid=20220706005567&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=Corvias&amp;index=1&amp;md5=da6c76475b1a918656a9e069a0589007" target="_blank">Corvias</a>&nbsp;is kicking off the third phase of its solar energy program at Fort Riley that, when complete, will bring nearly 17MW of renewable energy to power more than 40% of Fort Riley homes. For this phase, Onyx Construction will deliver approximately 4.4MW with two ground mount solar arrays located in the housing community. The project will incorporate a microgrid that can provide backup power to housing and other mission-critical facilities in an emergency.

When phase three is complete, the Corvias solar program will deliver more than 38MW of power across Fort Riley, Fort Meade, and Aberdeen Proving Ground. The military family housing partnership between Corvias and the U.S. Army at Fort Riley is committed to supporting the U.S. Army’s energy-independence goals to ensure mission infrastructure, installation security and the well-being of service members and their families.

“Corvias’ energy services are an extension of our commitment to helping our partners achieve their goals while materially improving the community in which we live and serve,” said Corvias Managing Director Peter Sims. “The Fort Riley solar program is a great example of how the Military Housing Privatization Initiative can contribute to the greater goals of the Army such as providing 100% carbon pollution-free electricity for installation needs by 2030.”

To date, the Corvias solar and energy efficiency program has delivered 28MW of rooftop and ground mount solar in eight phases benefitting three Army installations. This is the equivalent of removing almost 6,000 cars from the road or preserving 187 acres of U.S. forests per year. The solar project complements the Corvias utility management program, which is updating approximately 16,000 military homes with energy and water efficiency technology.

At Fort Riley, Corvias recently delivered 32 renovated and completely reconfigured homes in the Rim Rock neighborhood, a $12M energy upgrade project across 3,800 homes, and is constructing more than 40 new duplex homes in the Warner Peterson community for senior noncommissioned officers.

Junction City Mayor Jeff Underhill announced Wednesday that Live Well Geary County and Pathways&nbsp; to Kansas Blue Cross Blue Shield presented the city with a check for $65,000 for the 7th Street Bike Boulevard.

"What that's going do is essentially turn 7th Street into a safe route to ride your bicycle from Washington Street out to where it meets the walking trail ( west side of Junction City near the former high school site ), "said Underhill.

City receives funds to complete the 7th Street Bike Boulevard

UPDATE: Missing juvenile, Marie, has been located safe

Following a two-year absence due to COVID-19 Memories at the Museum will return to the Geary County Historical Museum on Saturday, July 23 at 4 p.m.

The initial program will be done in partnership with the Black History Trail of Geary County organization, said Historical Society Director Heather Hagedorn. "Trying to get the history that has been under represented. So the topic for this program is Being Black in Geary County.&nbsp;

The program, which is an informal roundtable discussion, is open to the public. Information collected during the session will be collected and preserved.

Memories at the Museum will return

Other than in the movies, they may not be able to fly or use X-ray vision. But in the case of one innovative Kansas project, these children have learned that they do have smile-power. This is part of a remarkable intergenerational childcare program found in rural Kansas. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Last week we learned about Allen Schmidt and Resurrection Vineyard in Hays. Allen’s son, Brett, was born in Hays. The family moved around due to Allen’s military career.&nbsp;

Later, Brett Schmidt earned a degree in early childhood development and master’s degree in brain-based teaching and learning. He went on to teach kindergarten in Independence, Kan. where he met – and later married – Ashley.&nbsp;

When Brett’s folks returned to Hays, Brett and Ashley moved back as well. Brett took a teaching position at the rural community of Stockton, population 1,480 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

He went on to work for Child Care Aware, training and coaching childcare providers.&nbsp;

While in southern Kansas, Brett observed an intergenerational day care program in a nursing home. “I thought it was cutting edge,” he said. He wanted to establish such a program in northwest Kansas.&nbsp;

After years of planning and development, he founded the Learning Cross Child Care Center in Hays in 2015. With the approval of the senior residents’ council, the center was housed in the assisted living area of the Ascension Living Via Christi Village retirement community. Being located within a senior living facility made it possible to create healthy interaction between younger and older generations.&nbsp;

The program was named Learning Cross for two reasons: One, it was a faith-based program. And secondly, it represented a place where multiple generations could cross paths.&nbsp;

The program began as a half-day preschool and then expanded to a full-time day care center for 2 ½ to 5 year olds. It grew to include a second facility two blocks away from Via Christi Village.&nbsp;

Parents bring children to the childcare center at the beginning of the workday. During the morning, the kids bring their pedal carts and toys and enter the assisted living area where they go through the halls and meet the residents. A similar time for interaction is scheduled for the afternoon. Depending on the weather, the kids and residents might go in the outdoor courtyard to play.&nbsp;

Some seniors engage with the children at an even higher level, sharing stories or teaching the kids about their interests. Those topics range from raising flowers to learning sign language.&nbsp;

“The three pillars of our program are recognition for doing good things, having a sense of purpose, and acceptance within a community,” Schmidt said. A fundamental practice is teaching the children that they had the power to brighten someone’s day.&nbsp;

“We told the kids, `Sometimes people are hurting. Sometimes people are sad. But if you smile at them, you can get them to smile back. You guys have the power to make them feel better,’” Schmidt said.&nbsp;

It worked. Some kids and seniors were more reluctant than others, but the children were able to generate smiles and joy from the seniors. “The former director of the facility said, `My goal is to fill these hallways with life,’” Schmidt said. “When there was laughter and giggles and kid voices in the building, it was magical.”&nbsp;

One senior resident had been non-verbal, but when the kids showed up, she started making sounds and eventually to speak. At Christmastime, each family would adopt one or two ‘grandfriends’ to share gifts and stories. “The interactions can be miraculous,” Schmidt said. &nbsp;

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the intergenerational interaction had to stop, although the day care center continued within limits. “We hope to relaunch the senior interaction this fall,” Schmidt said. &nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just after 8:30p.m. Tuesday in Riley County.

&nbsp;A Polaris General driven by Emily Maier, 20, of Chantilly, Virgina, took a&nbsp; corner too fast at the intersection of of Snow Road and Falcon Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The&nbsp; UTV rolled, ejecting Maier and the passenger Kyle Schmele, 21, of Olathe.&nbsp; EMS transported both to Via Christ. They were later transferred to Stormont Vail for treatment, according to the RCPD.

Geary County 4-H Public Revue and Royalty Crowning are scheduled Thursday night at the 4-H Center on South Spring Valley Road in Junction City. That event will begin a series of busy days on the west side of town.

Junction City Rodeo dates are the 15th and 16th, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. There will be a Youth Special Needs Rodeo at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The 4-H Horse Show will be held Sunday evening the 17th at 6 p.m. followed by the Pedal Pull at 7:30 p.m. Other 4-H shows will range from the Dairy Goat / Sheep Show at 7 p.m. July 18th to the Bucket Calf and Beef Show at 7 p.m. on the 19th and the 4-H Swine Show at 6:30 p.m. on the 20th.

The annual 4-H Barbecue and Watermelon Feed will go from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. on Thursday the 21st and will be followed at 6:30 p.m. that evening by the 4-H Project &amp; Livestock Auction.

Free Fair and Rodeo will be focus areas in Geary County

Geary County Commissioners received a presentation from Geary Community Hospital Trustees this week on the need for operational funding for the hospital for this year. GCH needs more than $6 million to finish the year until the hospital moves into a partnership with Stormont Vail Health.

Alex Tyson, Commission Chairman, noted that the County will continue to be there for GCH, "continue to support and help the hospital but we do feel that the City needs to be available to help." A proposal for funding assistance is expected to go to the City in the near future. On Tuesday the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation committed $1.5 million to the effort.

This week the County did not commit any more funding but in the past have agreed to fund up to $3 million in American Recovery Program funding for the hospital. Tyson commented the County is in the position where Stormont Vail Health is at the table. "We're are in agreement on all the other functions as far as lease and repairs to the hospital. I don't believe the County could falter and let this fall between the cracks for $6 million. We would essentially have to find a way to get there but we would be burdened by the interest rate if we were to do that." Funds would have to be borrowed.

Colonel Will McKannay bids farewell to Fort Riley after serving as the U.S. Army Garrison Commander Fort Riley since July 2020.

Col. McKannay arrived at Fort Riley amid the COVID-19 pandemic and led soldiers through an unprecedented time.

Col. McKannay's next assignment takes him to Colorado Springs, Colorado, with the U.S. Northern Command.

Colonel Michael Foote takes over as Garrison Commander at Fort Riley, he has recently served as&nbsp;Garrison Commander of U.S. Army Garrison Fort Greeley, Alaska, and Special Forces Branch Chief at Human Resources Command.

Fort Riley welcomes new Garrison Commander

Junction City High School sophomore Gracie Erichsen will compete with the best softball home run hitters under the age of 16 in the nation in Los Angeles this weekend. After winning home run hitting competitions in Wamego and Kansas City she has qualified for a trip to the National Junior Home Run Derby during MLB Weekend at Dodger Stadium.&nbsp;

During the competition in Wamego she hit 12 home runs and hit another eight during the regionals in Kansas City. "I'm just excited to compete and there's going to be some of the best home run hitters in the nation, especially close to my age so that will be really cool to see."&nbsp;

Erichsen confirmed the competition will be on the 16th.&nbsp;

Erichsen, remembers her softball playing career began in T-ball in Chapman and then moved up to other leagues. In Los Angeles she stated she will compete to win but wants to get a good experience out of the event. "

Academically Erichsen is a gifted student and is in honors classes at JCHS. She also competes in volleyball and basketball at JCHS and in volleyball for a club team based in Manhattan. She is the daughter of Luke and Joanna Erichsen.

 </figure>Junction City High School sophomore Gracie Erichsen will compete with the best softball home run hitters under the age of 16 in the nation in Los Angeles this weekend. After winning home run hitting competitions in Wamego and Kansas City she has qualified for a trip to the National Junior Home Run Derby during MLB Weekend at Dodger Stadium.&nbsp;During the competition in Wamego she hit 12 home runs and hit another eight during the regionals in Kansas City. "I'm just excited to compete and there's going to be some of the best home run hitters in the nation, especially close to my age so that will be really cool to see."&nbsp;Erichsen confirmed the competition will be on the 16th.&nbsp;Erichsen, remembers her softball playing career began in T-ball in Chapman and then moved up to other leagues. In Los Angeles she stated she will compete to win but wants to get a good experience out of the event. "Academically Erichsen is a gifted student and is in honors classes at JCHS. She also competes in volleyball and basketball at JCHS and in volleyball for a club team based in Manhattan. She is the daughter of Luke and Joanna Erichsen.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – When most folks think about 4-H, the ideas that typically come to mind are projects and leadership. &nbsp;

Leadership for life is an important value for the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H program</a>, which offers many opportunities for youth to grow in those skills. One of these opportunities is the Kansas State &nbsp;4-H Youth Leadership Council.&nbsp;

“The first time I heard about 4-H Youth Council was the first time I attended a state event (the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum),” said Chanae Parker, a 3-year council member from Manhattan. “I saw (Council members’) dedication to 4-H and the difference they were able to make and was inspired. I wanted to be able to give back to the organization that challenged and shaped me into the individual I was then. So, I ran for (election to) Youth Council.”&nbsp;

Youth Council members include many of the highest performing 4-Hers in the state, but they don’t reach that level right away.&nbsp;

“I started 4-H as a Cloverbud at five years old,” Parker said. “Prior to Council, I was heavily involved in my club and my county. I had served every office in my 4-H club and been an officer for our county 4-H Council. I was a county 4-H Ambassador and had attended state and regional events like Kansas Youth Leadership Forum, the Northeast Leadership Event, and Citizenship in Action. When I decided to run for Council, I spent months refining my application, developing my speech, and practicing interviewing.”&nbsp;

Once she was elected, Parker said the real work of being on Council begins.&nbsp;

“Council not only hosts events for Kansas 4-H, but provides opportunities for youth to develop into effective leaders, citizens, and servants in their communities,” she said. “This is what 4-H is all about and Council is a key piece in the growth and development of our future leaders.”&nbsp;

Parker noted that serving as chair of the Kansas Youth Leadership Forum planning committee “was one of the most challenging and impactful things I’ve done on Council.”&nbsp;

“It took months of planning and taught me a lot about leadership. As a committee, we worked extremely hard to host the best event we could, and I am so proud to say that it was a success. All of the work behind the scenes was worth it because I know we were able to make a difference for Kansas 4-Hers and inspire them to make a difference in their clubs and their communities.”&nbsp;

Beyond planning events, Council members serve as mentors -- inspiring and encouraging the next generation of leaders.&nbsp;

“As a younger 4-Her, I admired the 4-H Youth Council members for the work that they did,” Parker said. “They had already attended the events, they had learned and grown in 4-H and so easily could have decided to step out. But they didn’t. Council isn’t about growing individually; it’s about the impact you are able to make on others because of the meaningful events and&nbsp;work you are able to do.”&nbsp;

“The ability to give back to 4-H and shape the organization for others is truly inspiring to me, and the heart of what I do on Council. One of my favorite parts about state events is watching delegates take home what they learned to share with others in their counties.” &nbsp;

Parker said being a member of the 4-H Youth Council involves significant responsibilities and hours of hard work, but the members attest to their growth in leadership, communication and organization skills.&nbsp;

She said: “Serving on Youth Council has made me the person I am today. It has instilled in me a passion for giving back and working for others. I’m truly grateful for the challenges and tribulations that I have encountered and how they have enabled me to grow. I cannot wait to see what the next generation of leaders can do for this organization.”&nbsp;
