&nbsp;Railroad fans who enjoy steam engines have one last opportunity this weekend to ride in a train powered by Abilene’s Santa Fe 3415 locomotive before it is taken out of service for required maintenance.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Officials of the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad announced today that the 103 year-old engine will undergo a special overhaul mandated by the Federal Railroad Administration every 15 years. Although the FRA only requires a complete safety check of the engine’s boiler, the railroad plans to make other improvements to the engine that will further extend the antique locomotive’s life.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A&amp;SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling said that while the railroad’s volunteer crew does regular day-to-day maintenance work on the iconic locomotive, the upcoming task requires actually taking the engine apart and examining the condition of each component in order to determine the extent of needed repairs before actual work on the engine can be done.&nbsp;

“Steam locomotives are just like your automobile. These big engines are subject to normal wear and tear,” said Boelling. “But unlike your car, steam engine parts cannot simply be purchased and installed. They must be made from scratch, and that takes time.”&nbsp;

Boelling said the procedure may take up to 18 months, meaning that the engine will be out of service during that time are still&nbsp; available for $85. All tickets can be purchased from the railroad’s website,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.asvrr.org/" target="_blank">www.asvrr.org</a>

On September 21, Joe Handlos, JC Breakfast Optimist Club Treasurer, was given a President’s Citation for his work since 2015.&nbsp; The citation included the following statement:

Greg Doering, Kansas Farm Bureau Osage orange trees are still common throughout much of the United States, though not many people appreciate just how much the thorny, dense trees have shaped our country. Before Christopher Columbus’ arrival, Osage orange had a limited range in the Red River basin in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Like the droves of Europeans who followed, the tree eventually spread to all corners of our country, so long as you don’t count Alaska and Hawaii. The thorny, dense trees go by a number of names, including hedge trees, prairie hedge, hedge apple, horse apple, bowwood or yellow wood for the hue of the heartwood. Whatever moniker you choose, the trees were the original barbed wire. After sprouting, the hedge trees were aggressively pruned to promote thick growth that was woven into a living fence considered to be “horse high, bull strong and hog tight”. Even after the widespread adoption of barbed wire, wood from the hedge tree is still highly prized for fence posts based on its ability to withstand the elements. Termites and other insects don’t bother the wood. Water doesn’t penetrate the dense grain either. Today, a post made from Osage orange is likely to outlast the strands of barbed wire attached to it. In fact, the posts can be difficult if not impossible to work with if they’re left to season too long after cutting. Hedge posts don’t decay, rather they almost petrify into something between wood and stone. Osage orange’s qualities extend well beyond corralling cattle and other livestock. Its tight grain makes the wood extraordinarily flexible, enough so that a bow made from the tree was worth a horse and blanket in the 1800s. Osage orange also offers the highest heat value of any species when burned as firewood. Osage orange is probably the most popular and widely distributed plant that isn’t a food source for either humans or animals. Its fruit is a softball-sized green ball with folded contours that surround a cluster of seeds. We called them brain blobs growing up because the outer shell consisted of folded contours. They were dense and would make a satisfying sound when flung into a tree trunk. They’ll start falling off trees any day this time of year. Rumor has it the fruits keep all sorts of creepy-crawlies away, from boxelder bugs and crickets to spiders and other pests, especially when placed in basements or near the foundation of a home. Research has yet to find any evidence to support those claims, yet the legends endure. &nbsp;Steel T-posts and pipe braces are gaining favor, but some still prefer to use hedge posts for fencing. Composite compound bows can launch an arrow with a much greater force than the traditional longbow, yet Osage orange bow staves are still readily available. The living fencerows are long gone, but hedge trees planted during the Great Depression as windbreaks still mark the edges of fields. There’s no one quality that has seeded the Osage orange across the countryside, rather versality is its main attribute. From hedge to post or bow to kindling, mankind has found it useful for centuries. While modern materials will eventually win out, they won’t ever have a history quite like hedge.

Fort Riley was the site for the apple Day celebration this past Saturday. In addition to the sale of apple pies by the Historical and Archaeological Society of Fort Riley the event also served as an open house for the military installation.

Vendors, activities, contests,&nbsp; entertainment will all be part of the Oktoberfest in downtown Junction City Friday and Saturday. Coordinator Justin Hoover said it will be like a big backyard party, "with tents down the middle of main street and great entertainment."

Hoover said there was one schnitzel vendor last year, but there will be three this&nbsp; time. Bierocks and brats will be for sale along with barbecue and desserts. There will also be merchant vendors.

In the entertainment category Brass Rewind will return from a year ago. "They're kind of a 70's, 80's, 90's band. The All Stars from Kansas City and the 1st Infantry Division band will be performing and there'll also be polka bands.

The site for the festival will be between 6th and 9th Street on Washington Street. Organizers are expecting several thousand people to attend the event.

JEFFERSON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 8:30p.m. Saturday in Jefferson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 GMC Sierra driven by Shawn E. Ridgeway,&nbsp; 58,Topeka was westbound on Kansas 4 Highway in the city of Meriden. 

The pickup crossed the center line into the path of an eastbound 2022 Kenworth semi driven by Adrian M. Fulmore, 49, Junction City.&nbsp; Both vehicles collided in the eastbound lanes of traffic.

EMS transported both driver to Stormont Vail in Topeka. They were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Milford Lake was a big attraction for visitors to the Geary County Convention and Visitors booths at the recent State Fair. Donna Price, CVB Director, noted that there was a lot of curiosity about the lake. "About cabins, about Acorns ( Resort ) and the other areas that you can stay in. " Horse and biking trails were also areas of interest.

Fishing at the reservoir was a big draw. "In fact we have some postcards and one of them is of a lady that had caught an 82-pound blue catfish. We ran out of those postcards this year because they were so popular, "said Price.

There were volunteers and CVB staff that manned the booths in the Pride of Kansas building.&nbsp;

Many people enjoyed the Visitors Guide during the fair. Other areas that were promoted ranged from hunting to the waterfall at the Geary State Lake about eight miles south of Junction City.

I.C.A.R.E. recognized 35 youth and older adults for their participation in their 2021-22 Pen Pal Intergenerational Project.&nbsp;&nbsp;Participants were 7th and 8th&nbsp;grade JAG Students from the HD Karns Innovations Academy, and older adults from Bicentennial Manor, the Bartell, &nbsp;Brookdale Senior Living, and two members from the United Methodist Church. All participants received gifts of appreciation.

In his weekly 515 report the Junction City Manager Allen Dinkel noted that as the City obligation debt lowers and by taking advantage of refinancing opportunities to lower annual interest payments, more funds have been made available. This has allowed the City to grow reserve funds for a “Rainy Day” but invest more in not only streets but for the “Quality of Life” issues as well. Check out the new pavilion at Rolling Meadows or improvements to playground equipment in the 5th Street Park or improvements to the baseball fields at North Park and how those facilities have been improved. 

Again they have to find a balance of taking care of needs, but also to make improvements to make Junction City a better balance. It provides us a chance for future growth.&nbsp; As the city move forward, there needs to be focus on other programs such as recreation to provide opportunities for everyone. Dinkel said, "Yes, someday there also will be a need to build a new aquatic facility. Library needs and the Opera House also are focus points. It all has a place. "

The Fall&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;Day&nbsp;Festival returns to Fort Riley from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 24.&nbsp;The festival, which is free and open to the public, is the largest annual event at Fort Riley and serves as the military installation’s open house.

Community members are invited to meet their Army through various attractions including helicopter and tank displays, military working dog demonstrations, explosive ordnance demonstrations, Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard demonstrations, musical performances, kid-friendly activities and&nbsp;apple&nbsp;pie sales from the Historical and Archaeological Society of Fort Riley. Food concessions, information and vendor booths will also be available.

Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of parking at Riley’s Community Center, 446 Seitz Ave., just off Huebner Road. Signage will direct to the nearby festival grounds at Artillery Parade Field. Attractions and demonstrations will be located throughout Historic Main Post, Fort Riley: Artillery Parade Field, Tuttle Park, Sturgis Field, and Cavalry Parade Field. No pets or outside alcohol are allowed at the festival.

The installation is open to the public for this event. Visitors who do not have a valid DoD ID will require a pass. Anyone can apply online ahead of time at&nbsp;<a href="https://pass.aie.army.mil/RILEY" target="_blank">https://pass.aie.army.mil/riley</a>, or can get a pass the&nbsp;day&nbsp;of the event by stopping by the Visitor Control Center (VCC) located just outside Henry Gate, exit 301, I-70.&nbsp;

Fort Riley’s Fall Apple Day Festival will be Saturday

The Geary County Historical Society is preparing for the 2nd&nbsp;annual Festival of Trees and looking for donations! Local businesses, organizations and artists are invited to decorate and donate Christmas items which will then be on display in the museum’s auditorium and available to bid on during the final week of November. All the money generated by the silent auction stays in Geary County and helps fund programs and exhibits at the museum.

According to Museum Director, Heather Hagedorn, in honor of the Historical Society’s 50th&nbsp;anniversary, the museum is aiming to have 50 pieces to bid on. The suggested theme of the year, in keeping with the anniversary, is “Golden Opportunities.” Items donated last year for the first annual event included: trees, wreaths, centerpieces, quilted wall hangings, and mixed media art and the fundraiser raised over $3000 for the Historical Society.

Outdoor sports enthusiasts can enjoy activities ranging from kids casting and fishing to beginning shotgun shooting and archery during the National Hunting and Fishing Day celebration at Sportsman's Acres on Saturday. The hours for the event will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This will be the 50th anniversary of National Hunting and Fishing Day. Geary County Fish &amp; Game Association will open their ranges and facilities to the public, inviting people to try their hand at shooting and angling at no cost. Fish &amp; Game Association spokesman Larry George said they like to get people out. "We try to do a few displays and demonstrations, said George. "You can just show up here between 9 and 3 and plan on spending a few hours."

Other activities including bouncing clay target rabbits. If you want to try a few shots on the trap range you can try that. If you want to shoot a .22 rifle or pistol you can try that." There will be displays and demonstrations throughout the day.

Part of the event includes an all day outdoor sports swap meet, and there will be meals and snacks available from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. including sloppy joes, potato chips and beans along with a drink for a suggested donation of about $7 or $8.

KDOT's Division of Aviation is partnering with the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education to host the Fly Kansas Air Tour from Thursday, Oct. 6 to Saturday, Oct. 8.

The annual flying celebration promotes aviation and economic growth. The tour will visit nine communities including Junction City from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct.8. More than 30 pilots have registered to participate.

This event brings airplanes and career opportunities within reach for more than 1,000 children across the state. The tour focuses on STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering and Math ) education.

Elks Lodge 1037 will present the Milford Lake Fall Classic on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The tournament will be headquartered at the Farnum Creek Boat Ramp.

There will be a multi-species point system where participants can&nbsp; fish for catfish, crappie, walleye, white bass and wipers. This tournament will involve two-person teams at a cost of $100 per team. There will be a big&nbsp; fish pot.

Milford Lake Fall Classic is set for Saturday

SALINA—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a northeast Kansas man after an incident in Salina.

Earlier this month, the Salina Police Department had received complaints from the City of Salina that someone was driving on the flood control dike on the north side of the city. Motorized vehicles driven by private citizens are not allowed on the dike.

The complaints also included specific vehicle and license plate information. From that, police determined that the 2022 Toyota Tacoma pickup, valued at $34,000, was being rented from Hertz, according to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus.

 The pickup originally had been rented Aug. 24 and was supposed to have been returned on Aug. 31.

Hanus said an officer then called Hertz on Sept. 15 and was told that the pickup return date had been changed to Sept. 16. When an officer contacted Hertz on Wednesday, a company representative said that the pickup had not yet been returned and that the man who was renting the pickup had turned off his credit card. At that point, Hertz reported the pickup as being stolen.

Later on Wednesday, a patrol officer saw the now stolen pickup in the parking lot at Pilot Travel Center, 1944 N. Ninth Street, and made contact with the occupant, who was identified as Michael A. Flanagan, 76, of Axtell, Kansas. Flanagan also was the person who had rented the pickup.

Flanagan was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges of Theft and Two counts of criminal trespass

Fort Riley families will share their cultural customs and visitors will be able to dance, play games, do crafts, sample food and learn about Tae Kwon do on Sept. 27 at the Fort Riley Middle School multicultural fair.

According to Principal Kathleen Brennan, 20 different cultures will be represented. Those attending are encouraged to wear their favorite cultural dress.

The event is also aimed at connecting families with services on Fort Riley.&nbsp; Among the services to be showcased will be emergency services, which will provide a truck and equipment for families to see up close. There will also be a Chinook helicopter onsite.
