Junction City enjoys rock music and fireworks on Saturday night

Multiple rounds of rain Friday evening stopped the Freedom Fest JC celebration early and led to the cancellation of Sundown Salute for the evening.&nbsp;

In Junction City, Freedom Fest JC Co-Chair Nate Butler said early on a storm moved through and caused a delay in the performance by Disco Dick and the Mirror Balls but they were able to finish their show and festival goers returned to Heritage Park. But then more weather moved in.&nbsp; "We had a little bit of rain showers as the second band, Paramount, was preparing to take the stage." That caused a delay and eventually celebration officials met and made a tough decision. "So Bob Story and I, chairmen, got together and said we need to make this call and just cancel for the evening, said Butler. He emphasized safety was a huge factor in the decision to call off the night early.

The celebration will continue Saturday with numerous activities including from Freedom on Wheels in the morning where 18 bicycles and a substantial number of helmets will be given away. There will be education on such topics as bike safety and fitting helmets correctly. The Circus Man, Agri Puppets and Hog Diggity Dogs will perform. The concert lineup includes the 1st Infantry Division Army Rock Band at 4:30, ZZ KC at 6:30 and the Rock Gods at 8:30. There will be a&nbsp; fireworks extravaganza at 10 p.m.

Sundown Salute concerts in the Milford City Park were supposed to begin at 8 p.m. Committee Chair Michelle Stimatze said there was a major downpour and a lot of lightning. The weather cleared up some but then another rain cell came through. 'They had to cover everything up on the stage." Officials studied all of the other cells moving in the direction of the festival, said Stimatze. "It was a decision we needed to make for safety issues."

The Sundown Salute lineup for Saturday includes Special Forces at 8 p.m., Tracy Lebo at 9:30 and Peace Love &amp; Music at 10 p.m.

Thundershowers deal Freedom Fest JC and Sundown Salute a curve

Fourth of July celebrations begin in Geary County

MORRIS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after an early morning traffic stop.

Just before 2a.m. Thursday, deputies stopped a suspicious vehicle near U.S. 77 at mile marker 142, according to a media release.

Deputies found illegal drugs in the vehicle and arrested 56-year-old Thomas Fleeker of Council Grove on requested charges of criminal use of explosives, meth distribution, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm by a felon, criminal use of a weapon and related traffic violations.

Local officials have outlined details for security during the Fourth of July celebrations in Junction City and Milford.

Geary County Sheriff Dan Jackson said that there will be a comprehensive security plan to allow for a fun and safe Sundown Salute event in Milford.&nbsp;

Jackson added that they will be paired up with a Deputy and if there are any incidents with military personnel CID will take the lead.&nbsp; "Alcohol Beverage Control is sending agents every night and their primary focus is alcohol violations that may or may not occur in the event area or the surrounding areas." The Kansas Highway Patrol will be doing saturation patrol during the weekend.

The entire Milford City Park area will be signed off and some it will be roped off as the event area, said the sheriff. "If you're inside that area and you have a wrist band on you can have beer that you purchased on site. No outside alcohol can be brought in and you cannot drink&nbsp; in the parking areas outside the main event area. Jackson also advised those who do plan to drink to have a designated driver.

For Freedom Fest JC in downtown Junction City there will be a curfew in Heritage park enforced by the Police Department, said Co-Chair Bob Story. "Starting around midnight, except Saturday night when it gets done at midnight. As soon as everybody leaves nobody will be allowed inside the park area for security reasons.&nbsp;

&nbsp;There will be an adjustment the morning of July 4 to open the park for the runners who will be participating in Sundown Salute's Freedom Run.&nbsp;

Tickets are on sale for Triple Trivia Night to raise funds for the new Dorothy Bramlage Public Library project in Junction City. The event is scheduled Thursday, July 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Spin City.

Library Director Susan Moyer said it will be a trivia contest focusing on pop culture including movies, television and movies across multiple decades from the1950's to the present.&nbsp; "Our event will carry an admission charge of $40 per person or $100 per three-person team." You can purchase tickets for the Junction City Rodeo that is scheduled July 15 - 16 at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena, 1025 S. Spring Valley Road. Advanced tickets can be purchased at Orschlens in Junction City for $4 for children ages 6 - 12 and $9 for adults.

Tickets at the gate during the rodeo will be $5 for children 6-12 and $10 for adults. Children under 5 will be admitted free.&nbsp;

The rodeo begins at 7:30 p.m. both nights and there will be a Special Needs Rodeo from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, the 16th. The Queen Coronation will be held on the 16th following the Saddle Bronc competition.&nbsp;

There has been a great deal of tree debris this year,&nbsp; including downed limbs due to storms. Chuck Otte, Geary County Extension Agent, is not surprised. "The storms as I expected and predicted would happen this year are knocking more limbs than normal out." Otte stated that goes back to the major wind storm that occurred in December "that was not immediately apparent."

More tree limbs are being knocked down this year

Susan Jagerson, Director and Grant Coordinator of Live Well Geary County and Kalli Brownlee, WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Director, and Farmer’s Marker Manager, were guest speakers at the weekly JC Breakfast Optimist Club meeting in Junction City.

Jagerson shared that “Live Well Geary County (LWGC) is developing dynamic, community-based strategies to improve the health of residents. LWGC was founded in response to a call for county-wide coordinated action among health and wellness stakeholders. Together we work to close the gaps in services and resources so there are healthy choices where residents live, learn, work and play.”

Jagerson also shared some statistics about Geary County. “Geary County is one of the least healthy counties in Kansas but is making improvements. Twenty-four years is the average age of the population in the county; there is 11.7% poverty; 34.5% are enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); there is a 39% obesity rate and there is limited access to grocery stores where quality/healthy foods may be purchased.”

The LWGC Food Policy Council received a Pathways implementation grant to engage New Venture Advisors in developing a Food System Plan for the county. The 10-year plan provides a comprehensive approach to food system efforts – identifying policy solutions that influence how food is produced and consumed.

LWGC has partnered with the 12th Street Community Center, Delivering Change, the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library, I.C.A.R.E, the City of Junction City, Geary County, faith-based organizations and others. “An example of one of those partnerships include the 12th St. Community Garden managed by Vicky Bobbitt and the I.C.A.R.E. organization, which also works with Jobs For America’s Graduates (JAG) and the Bicentennial Manor. For $350 the public can Adopt A Bed in the 12th St. Community Vegetable Garden, which can be maintained by the adoptee or a designee”, Jagerson said.

Jagerson also told the Optimists that “85-100 meals are served to seniors on Mondays at the Larry Dixon Center on West Sixth Street. The meals may be as a dine-in, carry-out or delivered.”

Kalli Brownlee stated that “the Farmer’s Market is held every Thursday from 4-7:00 PM in the JC Naz parking lot on South Washington Street. Vendors set up to sell healthy foods and vegetables. The SNAP program is in place for those who are eligible.” Kalli and others have recipes available and recommendations on how to cook with and use the fresh fruits and vegetables, so the items are used in a timely and healthy manner.

Live Well Geary County works to improve community health

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Wednesday in Pottawatomie County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1995 Cadillac Deville driven by , Delores Elizabeth Sauvage, 58, Onaga, was northbound on K63 Highway just south of 286th Road.

The care left the roadway to the east, struck a field entrance,&nbsp; became airborne for some distance and came to rest on its front. EMS transported Sauvage to Stormont Vail. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Kan. woman hospitalized after car goes airborne before crash

John Summers, Ed Berney and the late Bill Deppish are credited with being&nbsp; founders of Sundown Salute.

This week, Michelle Stimatze, who chairs the planning committee said Summers will be in attendance for the celebration. He, along with other members of his family and the Bill Deppish family, will be recognized as grand marshals for the Sundown Salute parade that is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Monday in Junction City. "We decided to put them as grand marshals because without them starting this we may not have ever had this event.

This will be the 50th annual Sundown Salute. This year it will be held in Milford but three events will occur in Junction City including the parade, Freedom Run and Veterans Ceremony.

Setup for Sundown Salute occurred on Wednesday in Milford.

The concert stage was put in place on the ballfield area.&nbsp;

Concerts begin Thursday night with performances by Goddesses of Rock from 8 - 9:30 p.m. and The Hype from 10 -11:30 p.m.

Sundown Salute continues Friday through Monday.

Junction City Community Band established a scholarship fund in 1998 in memory of Jack Moore, a percussionist and former member of the band. The scholarship pays most of the cost of sending student members of the band to a summer band camp.&nbsp;

This year they have announced two scholarship recipients: Mariah Wyche, tenor saxophone, Junction City and Favian Gomez, trumpet, Manhattan. They will be attending the High Plains Music Camp at Fort Hays State University in July.

Over the years the community band has awarded scholarships to 28 students.

Hunting enthusiasts can enjoy Acorns Wild, a 1,000 acre tract located about five miles southwest of Junction City. Owner Mike Harris said the property is basically an extension of Acorns Resort, which is at Milford Lake.

The Acorns Wild property was acquired a little over a year ago. "We've been working on developing some activities so that guests that come to the resort can also come down here and enjoy some of the activities, "said Harris.

The property is a controlled shooting area that includes habitat for upland game birds such as pheasants, quail and chukar. "We buy the birds from a vendor and set them out there. Then people come through." There is an extended hunting season that begins Oct. 1. Guides and dogs will be provided or you can use your own dogs.

The site opened Oct. 1, 2021 and just in year one there were several hundred guests.&nbsp;To make a reservation call the Acorns Resort office at 785-463-4000, ext. 1.&nbsp;

Creation of Acorns Wild is intended to help attract hunters as one way to get people to visit the Flint Hills and stay in Geary County.

Elk are also being raised at Acorns Wild. "Eventually once we get the herd numbers up to where we need them to be we will be doing farm to table," said Harris. Elk will be raised at Acorns Wild, served in the Cove restaurant at the resort and then eventually via retail sales at the resort office.

Harris noted that right now they have a lot of calves at Acorns Wild adding that it's calving season. "So are a little over half way done with calving."

Meanwhile at Acorns Resort, repairs are progressing following the Milford Lake high water year of 2019. This is the busy summer recreation season at the resort.

Outdoor recreation takes a step forward with Acorns Wild

Manhattan Hy-Vee is now offering a new food option in their store, opening the fourth Wahlburgers location in Kansas on Tuesday.

Wahlburgers is the creation of Paul Wahlberg, brother of singer, Donnie Wahlberg and actor, Mark Wahlberg.

Menu items include mouth-watering burgers, sandwiches, salads and appetizers.

Ordering can be done at the Order and Pay Station or when seated at the bar inside the dining area.

"We're just hoping we can live up to the expectation." Hy-Vee Manhattan, store manager, Steve Rich says.

Wahlburgers is open from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, with dine-in  and carryout options.

There is a new elementary school being built on Fort Riley at 4720 Leonard Ave. USD 475 Board of Education member Jim Schmidt provided information during a board meeting Tuesday at the Devin Center.&nbsp; "We have started vertical construction out at Fort Riley on the new elementary school. " Schmidt added the precast walls are going up. "Exciting given the amount of rain we've had out there."

The new 81,000 square foot elementary school will have the capacity for 390 students. It is being built on a piece of land where the former Jefferson Elementary School was previously located.
