2022 is the Big Red One Year of Family, a year long campaign to continue to build and strengthen the families within the 1st Infantry Division.

Small nonfarm businesses in 27 Kansas counties and neighboring counties in Nebraska are now eligible to apply for low interest federal disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, announced Director Tanya Garfield of the SBA's Disaster Field Operations Center-West. The loans will offset economic losses because of reduced revenues caused by drought in 11 primary counties including Riley, Clay and Dickinson. There are 16 neighboring Kansas counties that are eligible including Geary, Morris and Pottawatomie.&nbsp;

Small nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for economic injury disaster loans of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred.

“Eligibility for these loans is based on the financial impact of the disaster only and not on any actual property damage. These loans have an interest rate of 2.94 percent for businesses and 1.875 percent for private nonprofit organizations, a maximum term of 30 years and are available to small businesses and most private nonprofits without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship,” Garfield said.

Registration for all children and teen summer programs will begin on Monday at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library.&nbsp;&nbsp;This includes the new STEAM Camps, Read and Learn story programs, Friday Night Live for middle and high school students, plus other programs.&nbsp; The summer program brochure will also be available for distribution on Monday.

KDOT and Geary County have awarded a bridge construction project to Ebert Construction Company, Wamego, for replacement of the existing Conroe Bridge on Ascher Road over Clarks Creek. The site is on mile north and five miles east of Junction City. The contract amount totals $1,458,267.

According to Geary County Public Works Director Corey Trumpp, it is anticipated that Ascher Road will be closed to through traffic on May 3rd. Ascher Road is projected to reopen to unrestricted traffic flow by Nov. 19th of this year. All work for the project should be completed by May 26th, 2023.

Official detour for west bound Ascher Road traffic will be routed north on Humboldt Creek Road, west on I-70 to Exit 303 and then back south to Ascher Road. East bound Ascher Road traffic will follow that detour in reverse. Detour traffic signs will be installed before construction begins.

Jerry Lonergan will start work Monday as the new Director of the Flint Hills Regional Council. 

Members of the council approved a resolution making Lonergan's hiring official. He has spent the past year as the interim director of the Junction City Main Street program.

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —In collaboration with the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, the Junction City Police Department recently participated in a special operation that targeted major criminals, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office..

 This operation occurred in Wabaunsee County and over a 3-day span and officers made multiple arrests.

 In addition to the arrests, there were several cases where large amounts of narcotics were seized. 

 This operation is a great example where multiple agencies collaborated and worked together on a common goal and made area communities a safer place. Among the other agencies who participated are the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office, Junction City Police Department, Grandview Plaza Police Department , Osage County Sheriff’s Office, Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, Salina Police Department, Saline County Sheriff’s Office, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office , Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Police Department, North Newton Police Department and the Wamego Police Department.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Following recent economic investment announcements in Manhattan, the Manhattan Area Technical College announced the opening of a brand-new lab on their Manhattan Campus

The Manhattan Area Technical college hosted a ribbon cutting for their new FESTO Industrial Engineering Technology Lab on Thursday.

The new lab will provide students with hands-on learning using multiple power sources to control systems including robotics and production lines.

Along with earning an Associated Degree from MATC, students will have the opportunity to test for the FESTO industry credentials, which are beneficial to reaching the next level of employment.

The new lab will see its first classes during the Fall 2022 semester. Students graduating from this program would be on track to apply for jobs at the new Scorpion Biological Services facility, among others.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the job market for information security analysts, defined as cybersecurity specialists requiring a bachelor's degree, is expected to grow 31% from 2019-2029 with a median salary of $103,590. Additionally, educational pathways to a career in cybersecurity remain limited, especially in the state of Kansas, where K-State's bachelor's program will be the first undergraduate offering in cybersecurity in the state.

Phyllis Fitzgerald, Society of the 1st Division Executive Director, said in the beginning more than a century ago it involved combat officers with ties to the division. Over time it's evolved where it includes both combat and current officers. "It's a gathering of just the Division officers and friends.&nbsp;

Lt. Gen. ( Retired ) Thomas Rhame will serve as the keynote speaker. He served as the 1st Infantry Division commanding general during Desert Storm. "He's going to be here because we want to celebrate the service of our Desert Storm veterans, because last year ( 2021 ) was the 30th anniversary of Desert Storm."

Junction City Commissioner Nate Butler noted that there will be a lot of good warriors in town. "Lot of guys that I was in combat with in Desert Storm, lot of guys that I know from platoon leader time and company that are around this area, will be coming from all over to be at this dinner."

Butler added if you see some of those guys tell them hello and say thanks.

This operation occurred in Wabaunsee County, Kansas, and over the 3-day span, multiple arrests were made. In addition to the arrests, there were several cases where large amounts of narcotics were seized. JCPD said this operation is an example where multiple agencies collaborated and worked together on a common goal and made our communities a safer place. Rock'n Riley Music and Street Eats will occur on Friday from 5-8 p.m. outside the Fort Riley Main Post Exchange, 2210 Trooper Drive. This will be a community event open to families and the public.

Rock'n Riley will also feature a car meet. Admission is free.

Visitors who do not have a Department of Defense ID card will need to obtain a pass at the Visitor Control Center, Exit 301 off I-70.&nbsp;

Public Works issues water outage notice

Geary County District Court jury members have returned a guilty verdict for Willie Powell Jr., Grandview Plaza on one count of Intentional Second Degree Murder. According to County Attorney Krista Blaisdell,&nbsp; the jury deliberated for nearly three hours Wednesday afternoon before returning the guilty verdict.

Powell had been charged in the fatal June 11th, 2021 shooting death of LaVincent Perdue, 33, Grandview Plaza in the parking lot outside of a barbershop in the 700 block of West 6th Street in Junction City. Perdue was a Fort Riley soldier.

Following the shooting incident, Perdue was transported from the scene by EMS to Geary Community Hospital where he died. Powell turned himself in to police in Topeka the next day.

Sentencing for Powell has been scheduled on July 21st at 10 a.m. in Geary County District Court.

Twenty-four Junction City High School students traveled to the 47th Annual High School Art Exhibition at Fort Hays State University on Wednesday. Artwork at the show is judged by a juried panel of FHSU faculty and Hays area artists.

According to Art Teacher David Goheen there were 28 pieces from 13 different JCHS students that received a Certificate of Merit from the Jurors. The following students won awards:

JCHS students show their creativity in art 

You can register for the April Lunch &amp; Learn scheduled Thursday, April 28th at noon central time. This online event features guest speaker Allen Packwood from the Churchill Archives Centre.

Packwood will discuss the relationship between Churchill and Eisenhower. He will use documents from the Churchill Archives to show how their mutual admiration was forged by shared experience during World War II. This bond was later tested by different national priorities during the Cold War.

Packwood is a Fellow of Churchill College at the University of Cambridge, Director of the Churchill Archives Centre, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to archives and scholarship in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours. His book,&nbsp; Churchill Waged War, was published by Pen &amp; Sword in 2018.

King Midas will perform a three-hour concert Saturday night at the Milford Lake Conference Center at Acorns Resort to help raise money for the Aging Well Senior Living project. The concert is scheduled from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.

Roxie Johnston noted that King Midas is known as the longest performing rock'n' roll band in Kansas. They began in 1964 as a four-piece band with the name King Midas and the Mufflers." Today they're a four-piece band. The original member is Mike Hill. He left in 1967 to go to the Air Force for four years but then he came back. "

The $13.5 million senior living project will be located on a 65-acre tract of land that was donated. Locally, Aging Well must raise $3.3 million of that total, and so far $2.3 million has been raised. Fundraising is moving forward.

Big Red One Family recognition and bluffs naming ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. Friday at the Outdoor Chapel on the bluffs above Main Post.

During the event the Army will recognize 14 families who have consistently demonstrated strength and resilience. There will be an unveiling of two benches dedicated by the Society of the 1st Infantry Division and former commanding generals of Fort Riley that will overlook the Flint Hills and a provide a site for reflection.

The event is part of the Big Red One Year of Family.
