KANSAS CITY (AP) — A 32-year-old Kansas man has been sentenced to two years of probation for participating in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Mark Roger Rebegila, of St. Marys, Kansas, was also sentenced Wednesday to 30 days of home detention, a $2,000 fine and 60 hours of community service.

Juneteenth will be recognized as an official holiday on June 19th each year. City Commissioners took that action Tuesday night.&nbsp;

Investigators learned a 59-year-old had been shot inside his residence during an alleged domestic quarrel.&nbsp; EMS transported the victim to a Topeka hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies have arrested 54-year-old Renee Lynn Larson on a requested charge of aggravated battery, knowingly use of a weapon to cause great bodily harm. attempted murder in the second degree. She is being held on a $100,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Woman held on $100K bond after allegedly shooting husband

Nancy Dettmer, was the recipient of the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s quarterly award for Making A Difference For Youth during the April 20th meeting. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s Making A Difference For Youth Award is presented to an individual who is: respectful to themselves and others in words and actions; is a person of integrity and is respected by others; is enthusiastic about the success of youth and strives to help them be successful, and has demonstrated volunteer work that makes a difference in youth as a priority.

Nancy coordinates food bags for students who needed extra food during COVID and now during the weekends, on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other breaks when school is not in session. She has worked with Wheels of Hope for the past five years to get the food, receive donations from others and then delivers the bags of food to the student’s residence. She told club members that “on one delivery day the temperature was below freezing and the trailer where a student and family lived had no door on the trailer, but only a sheet.” She then called a contact of hers, got a piece of plywood and put it up to cover the entry to the trailer, to add some warmth to the family inside. Nancy was surprised when her parents, Larry and Sandy Dettmer and co-worker Susan Pender were included at the meeting.

Nancy shared information about her work with the Health Science pathway at is the sponsor of the Health Occupations Student Association (HOSA). She teaches health science classes with a focus on learning about the medical profession. Students learn about medical surgery; anesthesiology; labor and deliver; physical therapy; infection control; dentistry and more. Her students in HOSA, have competed in state, national and international competitions with other high school students who take written tests and debate health related topics. There are as many as 58 different events in which students may compete. This year the competition will be held in Nashville, Tennessee.

A colleague shared that Nancy is the founding “mother” of the Health Science pathway at JCHS. What started as one classroom of students in the first year has matured into a collection of students that have gone on to study and practice nursing, physical therapy, be a physician’s assistant, dentistry, and medical school. All these students can directly relate their success to the beginning with Miss Dettmer’s classes and the HOSA Club.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities have captured a suspect wanted in Riley County on three active warrants, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Just before 9p.m. Tuesday, officers arrested 30-year-old Taylor C. Morris in the 500 Block of Stone Drive on requested charges of computer crime, theft, criminal deprivation of property,&nbsp;&nbsp;cruelty to animals, theft, criminal damage to property and&nbsp;&nbsp;aggravated domestic battery, interference with LEO, according to the RCPD.&nbsp; 

On April 13, police asked the public for help to locate him. Morris is being held on a $20,000 bond, according to the RCPD.

There will be negotiations on a possible contract that would allow Topeka-based Stormont Vail Health to provide hospital and clinic services in Junction City and Geary County. Stormont Vail agreed&nbsp; through a non-binding letter of intent to negotiate and potentially enter into a contract.

Margaret Grismer, Geary Community Hospital Interim CEO, saw the positive in this move. "I feel this is the absolute right direction for the hospital to go for financial and quality stability moving us forward into the future." 

Various regional healthcare entities were approached, explained Grismer. "The process took us through various LOI's ( letters of intent ) and Stormont Vail came back with an offer that keeps us looking most like a hospital, a vibrant hospital going forward in the future."

Trish Giordano, Geary County Commissioner, said she thought Stormont Vail is a "powerhouse for healthcare in the region. I think that we are&nbsp; fortunate that they see value in our community. "

Stormont Vail Health submitted the non-binding letter of intent that was approved by the Geary Community Hospital Trustees and the Geary County Commission.

Volunteers should report to Spin City at 915 South Washington at 8:00 am on April 23rd and be sure to bring gloves and drinking water! Lunch will be provided to all volunteers. 

Over the last 10 years, volunteers for Operation Clean Sweep have removed 15.42 TONS OF TRASH from Junction City!&nbsp;

Pink Up the Pace will be held Saturday

"Frame the Moment," JCHS Prom public viewing 2022 is scheduled from 6-7 p.m. Saturday at the Junction City High School Special Events Center &amp; Auxiliary Gym.

USD 475 issued a release that stated this will be the only time for parents to come into the Prom setting to take pictures with their student. Anyone from the public may attend the viewing.

There will also be a Promenade on Saturday evening from 7:45 - 8:45 at the JCHS Special Events Center where you can sit outside and take pictures of Prom guests walking the red carpet into Prom.&nbsp;

Effort is under way to restore power on Post

Topics ranging from immigration to federal spending were covered during a Town Hall meeting in Junction City by 1st District Congressman Tracey Mann on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Mann told JC Post that during a series of meetings across the district people are concerned about the federal debt and spending, open borders and inflation. 'The cost of things is ever increasing."

Mann told an audience at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library in Junction City that he is against reckless spending and noted the United States is $30 trillion in debt. Touching on the war in Ukraine the Congressman noted that he does not support sending in U.S. troops but support sending supplies.

On whether we should be prepared for more cost increases because of the war Mann responded to JC Post with a wait and see stance. "There'll be globally some food disruptions, but a lot of what we're dealing with is not a lot a direct result of Ukraine. These are issues of federal government spending the last few years, the war we seem to have on fossil fuels, a host of other issues. " Mann believes that there needs to be an increase in domestic oil production.

Town Hall meetings were also on the schedule in Riley County and Pottawatomie County for Mann on Tuesday.

(TOPEKA, Kan., April 19, 2022) – Stormont Vail Health, a Topeka-based regional health care system, has announced that they have&nbsp; agreed through a Letter of Intent to negotiate a contract with the Geary County Commission and the Geary Community Hospital along with its Board of Trustees that could result in Stormont Vail providing hospital and clinic services in Junction City and Geary County.

Stormont Vail Health submitted a non-binding Letter of Intent Friday that was approved by the Geary Community Hospital Board of Trustees and the Geary County Commission Monday.

Robert Kenagy, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Stormont Vail Health explained, “Our intent is that we together will create a healthcare system that delivers high quality care close to home and is financially sustaining. Together we support a regional effort that will not only enhance healthcare access and delivery, but strengthen our region’s economic vitality and quality of life.”

Margaret Grismer, Interim CEO, Geary Community Hospital, said the team at Geary Community is excited by the prospect of working with Stormont Vail as a partner in providing residents of Geary County and surrounding counties with high quality, safe care. She credited the work of the Geary Community Hospital Transition Task Force, agreed to by the Geary County Commission, with developing strategies and collective vision for the delivery of healthcare now and in the future. “The Geary County commissioners are also to be commended for their support to ensure hospital and healthcare services continue to be available long-term,” she said.

The non-binding Letter of Intent provides that Stormont Vail is willing to negotiate and potentially enter into a contract to provide hospital and clinic services in Junction City and Geary County. If a contract is reached and closed, Geary County would own the hospital building and lease it to Stormont Vail. Contract closing would be subject to certain conditions being met, including all required licenses, permits and governmental approvals.

The Letter of Intent comes at a time when Geary Community Hospital is facing a financial crisis. The hospital announced in January it would be closing its 6-bed intensive care unit.

Geary Community Hospital continues to provide emergency, inpatient, outpatient and surgical services as well as services through its primary care and specialty care clinics.

Like Stormont Vail, Geary Community Hospital has been in operation for more than 100 years, starting when local physicians set up the hospital to take care of residents in their communities. Geary Community Hospital became a city hospital for about 40 years before it moved to county jurisdiction in 1963.

Stormont Vail Health is an integrated healthcare system serving a large region in eastern Kansas. The organization employs more than 5,400 team members, including more than 500 providers.

Through its Cotton O’Neil Clinic, a multi-specialty physician group, the organization provides access to care through primary care and subspecialty care clinics and centers: Cotton O’Neil Heart Center, Cancer Center, Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, Digestive Health Center, Pediatrics Clinics and Behavioral Health Center. It also operates Express

Care urgent care clinics and two outpatient surgical centers. Stormont Vail also has a growing presence in Manhattan – with two dozen primary and specialty providers. The organization is constructing a large medical facility near the Kansas State University campus that will house all of the Manhattan Stormont Vail medical groups when it opens in summer 2023.

Youth organization honors those who give their time, effort&nbsp;

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Shane Potter is one who gives credit where credit is due. And when it comes to volunteers in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/" target="_blank">Kansas 4-H program</a>, he’s big on the kudos.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Volunteers,” he says, “are really the lifeblood of how we run 4-H.”&nbsp;

In 2021, the Kansas 4-H program reported that more than 8,400 Kansans volunteered time to help nearly 50,000 youth. Volunteers support the hundreds of extension agents and state specialists that conduct 4-H programs across the state.&nbsp;

Potter is a 4-H Youth Development specialist, located in the state’s office in Manhattan, and from his perspective, the time given by Kansans is critical for youth.&nbsp;

“It’s the volunteers that bring life and connect with youth on a daily and weekly basis,” he said. “We are so appreciative of the contributions and structure that volunteers provide to make our system successful.”&nbsp;

Kansas 4-H is celebrating National Volunteer Week, April 16-23. The state’s largest youth organization has been around for more than 100 years, and offers nearly three dozen project areas and numerous programs that rely on caring adults to work closely with youth.&nbsp;

“There’s a place for everyone,” Potter said. “Regardless of how knowledgeable or confident a person is in an area, there is a place that can embrace your skills, help you contribute and allow you to give back to your community.”&nbsp;

Potter said Kansas 4-H offers a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/volunteers/volunteer-screening-resources/index.html" target="_blank">formal process for becoming a volunteer</a>, which includes a background check and training. He said those interested in becoming more involved should&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations.html" target="_blank">contact their local extension office</a>.&nbsp;

Others, he said, may spend less time focused on specific areas or needs in the program. Sometimes all it takes is for someone to ask those volunteers to become involved.&nbsp;

“We’ve done studies of why people volunteer and why people don’t,” Potter said. “And one of the things they say is that they weren’t asked. We help our staff understand that if you see someone that has a passion for an area that’s part of your community, it’s okay to ask them directly to volunteer.”&nbsp;

Potter said that although Kansas 4-H plans a week to show its appreciation for volunteers, he realize that many who give their time aren’t looking for recognition.&nbsp;

“But,” he said, “it’s always a nice thing to show we do appreciate what they’ve done, and the things that volunteers are contributing to youth.”&nbsp;

Community health extends beyond medical services

MANHATTAN – Public health – often – is taken for granted.&nbsp;

No matter where humans live, work, learn or play, many expect that they will have an equal opportunity to be healthy.&nbsp;

Kansas State University extension agents Tristen Cope and Clara Wicoff know, however, that is not always the case. They’re part of a group of 25 extension professionals in the north-central part of the country that is taking a long look at health in America’s communities – and what they can do to encourage equal access for all.&nbsp;

“More broadly,” said Cope, the family and youth development agent for the Chisholm Trail Extension District, “we are looking at the community base for health, organizations, and the policies that support health at the local, state and federal level.”&nbsp;

Many associate a community’s health with the availability of doctors, health care businesses and other medical providers. But public health includes such factors as having access to grocery stores; safe water to drink and air to breathe; and even trails for exercise.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, national health experts and representatives of U.S. land-grant universities released a report titled,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aplu.org/CES-EqHealth" target="_blank">Cooperative Extension’s National Framework for Health Equity and Well Being</a>, which provides a framework for improving health and achieving health equity in America.&nbsp;

Further, it helps local extension agents identify the ways that they can more effectively lead their communities around barriers to health.&nbsp;

“One of my biggest projects is tackling the childcare crisis,” Cope said, noting that Marion County meets just 31% of the need for childcare, and neighboring Dickinson meets 50% of the need.&nbsp;

“We have community members calling in saying they can’t find anywhere to take their child so that they can go to work. This has become a work force issue. We’re working to bring more providers together, establishing more centers and supporting the work force. We’ve been able to get more local government involvement because of its impact on the work force and the (county’s) ability to bring new individuals to live in the county.”&nbsp;

Wicoff, who serves Woodson, Allen, Bourbon and Neosho counties as part of the Southwind Extension District, is helping local communities address food insecurity, having formed partnerships with farmer’s markets, a food bucks program and coalitions that promote food access to people of all backgrounds.&nbsp;

“If people don’t have their basic needs met, it’s really difficult for them to benefit from what we’re offering in extension,” Wicoff said.&nbsp;

Cope notes that, in her case, meeting the need for childcare affects a community’s economic stability and the child’s education.&nbsp;

“If those two areas are not being met, it sets up a greater challenge for later life development,” she said. “Childhood is such an essential time; it’s when 90% of your learning is happening. When everyone does not have access to early learning, that becomes a social determinant of health that then becomes a public health issue.”&nbsp;

Cope and Wicoff were selected to participate in an 18-week course titled Public Health Essentials, aimed to increase their public health competence. The program is sponsored by the&nbsp;<a href="https://4-h.org/" target="_blank">National 4-H Council</a>&nbsp;with support from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rwjf.org/" target="_blank">Robert Wood Johnson Foundation</a>.&nbsp;

Kansas extension agents initiating public health efforts

TOPEKA — Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 2.5% in March. This was unchanged from 2.5% in February and a decrease from 3.5% in March 2021.

“The Kansas unemployment rate held steady at 2.5% in March,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “Despite a slowdown in job growth this month, Kansas employers continue to show gains compared to last year.”

Riley County's jobless rate jumped slightly from 2.3 percent in February to 2.6 percent in March.  Geary County saw a similar jump from 3.5 to 3.8 percent. Clay, Pottawatomie, and Wabaunsee County all saw a slight increase.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 2,300 from February. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 1,800 over the month, while government decreased by 500.

“Kansas hourly wages trended higher in March, rising 6.6% over the year,” said Labor Economist Nathan Kessler. “However, due to continued inflationary pressure, Kansas real hourly earnings declined by 1.8% compared to March 2021.”

Since March 2021 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,900. This change is due to an increase of 20,500 private sector jobs and a decrease of 600 government jobs.

The April 2022 Labor Report will be released on Friday, May 20.

Private sector jobs decreased by 1,800 over the month, while government decreased by 500.“Kansas hourly wages trended higher in March, rising 6.6% over the year,” said Labor Economist Nathan Kessler. “However, due to continued inflationary pressure, Kansas real hourly earnings declined by 1.8% compared to March 2021.”Since March 2021 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,900. This change is due to an increase of 20,500 private sector jobs and a decrease of 600 government jobs.The April 2022 Labor Report will be released on Friday, May 20.

Maureen Gustafson, Board Chair, said, in the coming months there are a number of promotional activities that are planned. "MAYFEST is coming up. We have quite a number of activities in may, in July we're supporting the Freedom Fest and being able to figure out some programs to do downtown. "Other ideas will be developed in the future.

Main Street will be located at 131 West 7th Street for six months, but will be trying to locate a permanent office site on Washington Street during that time.

1st District Congressman Tracey Mann will host a Town Hall meeting at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library in Junction City on Tuesday at 8 a.m.

Also on Tuesday,&nbsp; Mann will host a Town Hall meeting in Riley County at 9 :15 a.m. at Pottorf Hall in Manhattan, and in Pottawatomie County in the Sunflower Room at 612 East Campbell St. in Westmoreland at 11 a.m.

According to the Geary County 4-H newsletter, May 2nd will be the final day you can drop or add projects for the county fair. If you do not add the project by that date you will not be eligible to exhibit in that area at the fair.&nbsp;

4-H members can sign to their 4-HOnline account to see what projects that they are enrolled in and to drop or add projects. Contact the Extension Office if you have problems logging in or editing projects.&nbsp;

Scorpion Biological Services decision to locate in Manhattan has some tie-in with the decision to build NBAF in that city. U.S. Senator Jerry Moran said it was the goal when NBAF was built in Manhattan that business and industry, science and research facilities, would grow up around Manhattan. "As NBAF comes on line later this year this is one of the first and biggest announcements that could come with that day." 

The Senator added the goal is to make sure that there are many others. "We need to make sure we have the necessary infrastructure and workforce, but with NBAF here, great opportunities for Kansans who like science, mathematics, engineering and research, and in the process of their careers help make America a safer place."

Scorpion is a $650 million investment project that will create 500 high paying jobs in the next seven years. The facility in Manhattan will support development of vaccines that enable an accelerated response to global biological threats.
