According to the Commission Chair Alex Tyson the request for the RV park was pulled back and there was a new request for storage permission on the same vote, but the governing body voted no on&nbsp; the RV park and suggested that&nbsp; the storage issue be taken back to the Metropolitan Planning Commission for consideration.

One day the temperatures reached nearly 90 degrees, and then two days later we received a dusting of snow. Needless to say, it’s all part of spring in Kansas! &nbsp; While looking at the calendar to mark the first day of corn planting, I quickly realized that we have officially hit the one-month mark until school is out for the summer. The days of my two kids home all day are upon us, and I couldn’t be more excited! &nbsp; They have a garden to help maintain, livestock to care for, swimming lessons to complete, little league practices and games to go to, library programming to attend, wheat harvest to help with, and 4-H projects to complete. It’s safe to say I plan to have an enriching summer with my kids while also taking care of our responsibilities on the farm. &nbsp; The garden has been prepared, and it’s now ready for two children to help manage. The kids have had a say in the seeds selected. They have helped plan the way the water will get to the growing plants. My two children have been given full reign of the garden space. They are free to dig and rake and water (with my oversight) to their choosing. Yes, weeding will also be a priority, but with their own garden tools, a radio playing music, and ownership in the space, I envision this summer gardening to be a fun experience that will perhaps incorporate more vegetables into my children’s picky food preferences. At the least, I hope my two will have a few garden entries at the local fair later this summer.&nbsp; &nbsp; While on summer break, the livestock will get even more attention from my children. My son’s cow and calf will soon return to the pasture near our home. Ensuring the animals have access to water daily and an occasional serving of range cubes will be a priority for my boy. He knows his cow is already bred and will deliver a calf later this fall. He also knows it is his responsibility to care for and observe his animals daily to ensure they also have a good summer on the farm as he anticipates another calf to add to his herd later this year. &nbsp; The sheep have already been released into their summer grazing space after the kids helped their grandpa build the fence. A breeding harness with a blue crayon has also been put on the ram that we recently introduced to the ewes. Soon, we will hopefully begin seeing signs in the form of blue marks on the backs of the females indicating the arrival of lambs later this fall. My two children will be responsible for helping keep watch over the ewes daily and note when a blue mark appears on another member of the flock in anticipation of lambing season. &nbsp; Physical activity will also be key to being home this summer. Organized time at the swimming pool as well as ball practices and games will keep my kids moving (and decrease screen time) while also having fun with friends. &nbsp; Fun will also be had with friends as my children participate in our public library’s summer program in town as well as during sessions with others to work on completing their 4-H projects.&nbsp; &nbsp; And we can’t forget about the wheat harvest we will all focus on when the time comes this summer. My two will assist me with making and delivering meals to the field, helping deliver truckloads of grain to the local elevator, and sitting in the buddy seats next to their dad and grandpa as the combines work through fields. It’s safe to say we have a full summer planned that will keep my kids’ minds engaged, their bodies active, and their relationships nurtured, while also providing them with opportunities that will help them understand the importance of fulfilling responsibilities on the farm.

Visions of Summer

Scorpion Biological Services will develop a 500,000 square foot biomanufacturing facility in Manhattan. The $650 million business investment project will create 500 new, high-paying jobs within the next seven years. The average annual employee salary has been projected at $76,000.

Scorpion is a subsidiary of Heat Biologics, Inc.&nbsp; The facility will support development of vaccines that enable an accelerated response to global biological threats. They will also provide commercial level development, manufacturing and bioanalytical testing services at stage for biopharmaceutical products on a fee-for-service basis to the global health industry.

Jeff Wolf, Chief Executive Officer, said the announcement is part of&nbsp; their vision to build an ecosystem of companies that can move drugs to those who need them as quickly and efficiently as possible. Wolf said their product starts with discovery at a plant in New Jersey, research and development in North Carolina. clinical scale production at a Scorpion facility in San Antonio, Texas and will end with commercial scale manufacturing in Manhattan. "We will develop rapid and efficient smart drug manufacturing."

Wolf said that idea will drive the operation in Manhattan. "When we visited Kansas after reviewing proposals from many states, the Sunflower State quickly rose to the top of the list." Wolf also stated, "Kansas values are our values." That coupled with a supportive business environment, support from political leadership, opportunities for workforce and talent development and the existing biodefense ecosystem in Manhattan, it was "a strong yes to the Sunflower state. "

Wolf stated his company believes the facility will be transformative to Manhattan, Kansas and America. He noted that the company plans to directly more than 500 employees with approximately 700 additional jobs being created indirectly to support the operation.&nbsp;

Governor Kelly called this project the most significant economic development project to date during her administration. She was among multiple speakers during the unveiling of Scorpion at the Manhattan Conference Center. Other speakers ranged from U.S. Senator Jerry Moran to KSU President Richard Linton along with representatives from the City of Manhattan and Pottawatomie County to the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce.&nbsp;

Wolf stated, "We are going to get&nbsp; this moving as fast as possible. It's really important to get this facility up to protect our men and women in armed services. We're going to work as fast as we can."

At the close of the announcement Wells signed a letter announcing Scorpion's intent to build in Manhattan. Wells and Governor Kelly posed for photos holding that letter.

Officials noted this project was a partnership between the Kansas Department of Commerce, Kansas State University, Kansas State University Innovation Partners, the City of Manhattan, the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, Pottawatomie County, Pottawatomie County Economic Development Corporation, Manhattan Area Technical College, Evergy, CRB and Realty Trust Group.

Just before 5:30p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for making false information and criminal use of a financial card in the 100 block of Manhattan Town Center, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

Banter by Piercing Pagoda reported two unknown female suspects used a fraudulent financial card to purchase multiple jewelry items. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $9,142. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

MANHATTAN — The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/nabc/">National Agricultural Biosecurity Center</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University is receiving a more than $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to protect the nation's food supply, according to a media release from the university. With the grant from DHS's Food, Agriculture and Veterinary Defense Division, the center will seek ways to support the production and economic health of the food and agricultural sectors and sustain human health through a stable and resilient food and agricultural supply chain. "A robust defense of our nation's agriculture and food systems is as important as ever as supply chains and critical infrastructure incur heightened exposures to risk," said Adrian Self, operations research analyst at the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center, or NABC. "Enhancing the resiliency of the food and agricultural enterprise, especially in preharvest sectors, against disruption and providing producers, processors and government agencies tools to enhance situational awareness is essential," Self said. "This is the task that has been given to the NABC." The center will support the Food, Agriculture and Veterinary Defense Division in its role to address vulnerabilities, threats and capabilities needed for food, agriculture and veterinary readiness, overall critical Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency sector resilience, and further aiding in efforts to secure the nation's food supply, agricultural, economic and human health. The National Agricultural Biosecurity Center has performed similar work on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Agriculture and Office of the Director for National Intelligence. The center also has collaborations with K-State colleges, departments and units, in addition to the federal National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility and the Kansas Department of Agriculture. "This proposal continues previous exploratory and developmental work performed by NABC through prior DHS Food, Agriculture and Veterinary Defense Division tasks and contracts," said Marty Vanier, center director. "NABC's established working relationships and prior collaborative projects with other academic institutions; diagnostic and research laboratories; federal, state, and local agency partners; pre- and post-harvest production, processing and supply chain associations; and private industry has prepared our program to be a dominant actor in driving progress on priorities key to the nation's security." The projects involved in these undertakings include assessing county-level readiness and capacity to respond to a high-consequence food or agricultural incident; updating animal disease response training; framework development for sharing food and agriculture information, data, and analysis; and assisting the integration and collaboration amongst federal, state, local, research and industry stakeholders. The National Agricultural Biosecurity Center supports applied scientific research to develop practical agro-security capabilities and programs addressing diverse threats to U.S. and world agricultural economies and food supply chains. It engages elements from local, county, state, and federal governments to enhance national food security.

The work included putting together a raised garden bed, hauling and filling raised beds, leveling the area and cleaning debris from the area.

This pilot project is a joint effort between Live Well Geary County and the 12th&nbsp;Street Community Garden Committee. Two grandparents, grandchildren and youth began planting on Saturday.

Military Affairs Council Director Craig Bender has announced that there are 10 designated sites for an African American History Trail planned in Geary County, ranging from the Geary County Historical Museum to Rathert Field. "We're gaining momentum as far as people that want to be a part of the program. " People have donated funds. "So right now we're trying to put together what the signs are going to look like so that they can build the information is going to go on those at each location. "

Military Affairs Council Director Craig Bender has announced that there are 10 designated sites for an African American History Trail planned in Geary County, ranging from the Geary County Historical Museum to Rathert Field. "We're gaining momentum as far as people that want to be a part of the program. " People have donated funds. "So right now we're trying to put together what the signs are going to look like so that they can build the information is going to go on those at each location. "<figure>

Work is progressing on development of a History Trail 

Members of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association helped with raising a new U.S. flag outside the home of Ligia Paquette, 1012 Plains Drive, on the west side of Junction City Thursday evening.&nbsp;

An existing flag was due to be replaced with a new American flag. The surprise arrival of the group to help with this project was appreciated by Ligia. "I was extremely honored and thankful to this group of soldiers. " Ligia also added, "They brought tears to my eyes, it was beautiful. "&nbsp;

&nbsp;Ligia noted that there were both some retired and active duty military members helping with the project.&nbsp;

Junction City Finance Director Lindsay Miller has provided an update on city hall upgrades. Most of the basement is complete with Codes back in their original office and Customer Service continues to operate in the basement.

Construction is moving forward on the main floor.&nbsp; There is good progress in the customer service office and that should be complete in approximately one week. When complete, there will be a new counter area for utility payments with a glassed-in window as an added layer of protection.&nbsp; The update will also include new security cameras.&nbsp;

The upgraded system will also be standardized throughout the City with the police department having access any time. The Municipal Building will be fully monitored for everyone's safety.&nbsp;

Other updates within the building included adding additional picture frames in the training room for mayors who have served and the period of service.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY —A Kansas man was&nbsp; injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Saturday in Riley County during a pursuit by law enforcement.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2109 Honda passenger vehicle driven by Javius Raekwon Forbes, 26, Fort Riley, was westbound on Kansas 18 approximately 6 miles east of Interstate 70 in the passing lane fleeing law enforcement. 

The Honda traveled into the median, struck a delineator post, traveled back onto the roadway, crossed over the westbound lanes off the roadway to the right and came to a stop in a wooded area.

EMS transported&nbsp;Forbes to Via Christi. A 26-year-old passenger was not wearing a seat belt and not transported for treatment of a possible injury.&nbsp; The KHP did not report what prompted the chase.

Forbes is being held on a $3000 bond on requested charges of possession of marijuana, Fleeing or attempt to elude a law enforcement officer; 1st conviction and Reckless driving, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Main Street Office ribbon cutting will be held Monday

Making the children smile was a key goal of the Easter Egg-Stravaganza&nbsp; hosted in Heritage Park on Saturday by the First United Methodist Church for the community. Will Ravenstein, Assistant to the Pastor, estimated the turnout at approximately 200 kids. The Park was divided into areas by age group for the event. "Heritage Park has got a great sidewalk system and grass area so we were able to separate the park by age groups so all kids can have fun."

Ravenstein noted that other organizations that participated with activities in the park included a donor, St. Tabitha Order of the Eastern Star, plus cheerleaders from Saint Xavier High School doing face painting and the Geary County Conservation District with help from Nichole Mader of United Way on a seed planting station that had Kansas wildflowers that are good for bees and butterflies.

More than 7,000 eggs along were distributed throughout the park. There was candy, gift cards and two bicycle prizes as well.&nbsp;

Children find Easter Eggs in Heritage Park

MANHATTAN—The Kansas State University family is mourning the death of former university president Jon Wefald.&nbsp;

In a statement from the K-State social media page, current K-State president Richard Linton wrote,&nbsp;“The K-State Family is deeply saddened to learn of former K-State President Jon Wefald's passing. 

Dr. Wefald's legacy is one of transformation, growth and a true passion for our great university. Our condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time."

Wefald served as the&nbsp;university's 12th president <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/media/k-statement/vol31/32609k-statement.pdf">from 1986 to 2009,</a> the second longest term as any K-State president, according to the university web site. He retired at the end of the 2009 academic year.

In June of 2014, the newest residence hall on the Manhattan campus was named Wefald Hall in his honor. It was the first residence hall built on the university's main campus since Haymaker Hall in 1967 and opened for the fall semester in August 2016. Wefald was 85.

Marche Fleming-Randle told a Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce dinner audience Thursday that it's important for a community to think that they're great. "Because if you don't think you're great who is going to think you are."

Fleming-Randle served as the keynote speaker during the dinner.&nbsp; She talked about her years growing up in Junction City. Today she is a Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at Wichita State University.

Fleming-Randle touched on how important it is to make things happen in a community. "How many of us have set in positions and didn't like where we sat. " She said you need to speak up, "when you see something wrong. When you know something, you say something. Communities cannot thrive with closed mouths. "

Fleming-Randle said home is where you make it and we have to seek what we're looking for. "People don't know what it took to get Junction City to this point. "&nbsp;

She asked the audience to continue to give, support the Chamber, school district and businesses, and not figure out a way on how to sabotage. "Let's be the spirit of Junction City, let's be the people who moved the needle to make Junction City a better place for children to come."

Fleming-Randle also passed on some information about the history of Junction City by commenting that in 1927 this was the first town to have a kindergarten class, this was the first community to distribute Coca Cola and the first reading club came out of Junction City. She added when people ask you about Junction City you should be able to sing a whole song with lyrics about how wonderful it is in this town.

Proceeds will be donated to the&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/support/thompsonfund.html" target="_blank">Thompson Family Cancer Research Fund</a>, which supports the university's&nbsp;<a href="https://cancer.k-state.edu/" target="_blank">Johnson Cancer Research Center</a>. Tickets are $65, which provides two drinks, Cox Bros. BBQ buffet, live music and entertainment such as duckpin bowling and multi-sport simulators. Thompson and his family established the cancer research fund last fall in memory of his mother, Teresa Lynn Thompson, and grandfather, John Walter Thompson. His mother died of breast cancer when he was 6 years old and his grandfather died of pancreatic cancer seven months later. "They were two of the most influential and meaningful people in my life, and I had a really hard time wrapping my mind around that loss," Thompson said. "To be able to support a cancer research center at my university is very special to me." Thompson says that even though his time at K-State is over, he plans to continue supporting the Johnson Cancer Research Center. The center, which is in the College of Arts and Sciences, provides funding and other support to advance cancer research and education at Kansas State University. Organizer Phyllis Fitzgerald has announced that there will be a downtown Junction City spring cleanup project on Saturday, April 30th from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Volunteers can meet in the parking lot of Bella's at 605 North Washington.

Parking will be available in the city parking lot at 6th and Washington. Trash bags, water and gloves will be provided, along with some tools including rakes, trimmers, brooms and dustpans. If you have some tools you can bring those as well.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged sex crime involving a teen in Manhattan.

Just after 5p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for unlawful transmission of a visual depiction of a child in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

It was reported an unknown suspect solicited pictures from a 14-year-old boy then demanded payment to not share the pictures. 

Due to the nature of the crime reported, police released no additional information. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000

One of the highlights of the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner was the presentation of a Quilt of Valor to Brian Coleman. He served 21 years in the Army, including 12 years at Fort Riley.

Junction City Police Department has 9 full time dispatchers who share the responsibility of dispatching all emergency services across Geary County.

The dispatchers answer calls around the clock helping the caller on what may be that person’s worst day.

Dispatchers also collect as much information about the situation as possible, to help provide the best response to each situation.

“Try not to get frustrated with our dispatchers when they are asking you, you know, multiple questions, we’re trying to figure out what’s going on; where you’re at so we can get the help that you need to you. Most situations help has already been dispatched and they’re on their way.” Junction City Police Department, Director of Communications, Sharon Riley says.

The Dispatchers have received lunch from their supervisor, along small gifts, including breakfast and other goodies from partnering agencies and community members in appreciation of their work in helping keep the community safe.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a fatal July 2021 accident have made an arrest.

On Thursday, police arrested 81-year-old Russell Peterson of Randolph, on a Riley County District Court Warrant on requested charges of&nbsp; Murder in the 2nd Degree; unintentional but reckless, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that just after 8:30a.m. Sunday July 25, a 2006 Volvo semi driven by Russell Peterson, 81, Randolph was eastbound on Greet Randolph Road one half mile north of Randolph.

&nbsp;The driver failed to stop at the stop sign at U.S. 77.&nbsp; The semi struck a northbound Acura driven by Adam Samuelson, 38, Randolph.&nbsp;

EMS transported Samuelson to Stormont Vail where he died.&nbsp;Peterson was not injured.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On Thursday Peterson was issued a total bond of $100,000 and is not confined in the Riley County Jail, according to the RCPD.
