Sons of the American Legion will host a fundraiser breakfast for the Geary County Food Pantry on Saturday, July 30 from 7 - 10 a.m. at the American Legion Post #45, 201 E. 4th St. in Junction City.

The menu will include biscuits &amp; gravy, eggs, sausage, ham, tater tots, orange juice and coffee. The cost will be $8 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.&nbsp;

The breakfast will be dine-in, carry-out or delivery. It is open to the public.

Numerous activities are scheduled Monday at the Geary County Free Fair

East defeated the West 8-4 in the Mid Plains League Conner Taylor All Star game at Rathert Field Saturday night. Several hundred fans enjoyed the contest featuring players from six summer collegiate teams, including the Junction City Brigade.

Michael Moore, League Commissioner, said the fans turned out for the game. "Junction City always does a great job. It is amazing coming here, what a venue. " Several hundred fans turned out for the event, which also included a home run derby, fireworks display, numerous booths and vendors ranging from the Rusty Bus Photo Booth to face painting. Konza Prairie Community Health Center, Valley View Senior Life and the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation were all represented with booths as part of a pregame emphasis on healthcare.

Moore said the players enjoy coming to Rathert Field. "They enjoy the activities that are planned, it's meaningful. We support mental health awareness and&nbsp; then we have a great all-star game."

Nelson Vera, Sabetha Bravos, was named the game MVP after going 3-4 at the plate with four RBI's and a home run. He also won the Home Run Derby held before the game. For his efforts Vera, from Venezuela, will receive two custom made bats that will be custom engraved.&nbsp;

Junction City Brigade coach Brandon Bachar was the head coach for the winning west team. "That's awesome. The All Star game is a really good experience for everybody and it's an even better feeling when you come out on top."

All Star Game entertains the fans at Rathert Field

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. –&nbsp;<a href="http://www.usd475.org/" target="_blank">Geary County Schools USD 475</a>&nbsp;will host two&nbsp;<a href="http://www.usd475.org/career-fair/" target="_blank">career fairs</a>&nbsp;to fill open positions before the school year begins. The first fair will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at the H.D. Karns Building, 300 W. 9th St., Junction City. The second fair will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, at Fort Riley Middle School, 4022 1st Division Rd., Fort Riley.

According to Communications Coordinator Marcia Locke open positions include ELL, instructional, bus, lunch and playground aides; student support monitor; cook; cafeteria server; administrative assistant; and library clerk. Employees are offered flexible schedules, time-off options and benefits.

Locke noted that career fair attendees will have the opportunity to speak with school administrators and human resources representatives. Prospective applicants are encouraged to bring resumés.

JCPD schedules summer block party for Aug. 5

A scorching hot Friday cooled down with a light breeze in time for the opening night of the Junction City Rodeo. Several hundred people were in attendance.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Daryl Blocker, Rodeo Association President, was a little surprised at the turnout because of the heat in recent days. "You look around, looks like about every seat is full. "

Wyatt Kraft, Abbyville, KS, served as a pick-up man for his grandfather, Steve Kraft, who provides the livestock for the rodeo. Wyatt described his job. "When a horse starts out of the chute it bucks, the horse can bounce off you and it won't affect the rider, and as soon as the buzzer goes you have to take the rider off, gather your horse up. Kraft explained that sometimes the job is tricky.&nbsp;

This is an open rodeo at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena just off South Spring Valley Road. It continues Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Among the activities will be the crowning of the king and queen. Advance tickets are $9 for adults and $4 for kids 6-12. At the gate they are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 6-12. Five and under are admitted free.

There will be a Youth Special Needs Rodeo at 10 a.m. Saturday.

28th annual Junction City Rodeo gets under way

Forty units of blood were collected Friday during a Red Cross blood drive at the Junction City Municipal Building, three above the goal for the day.

The amount collected for the two-day blood drive reached 139 units.

There is a Red Cross blood drive on Friday until 1 p.m. at the Municipal Building. On day one of the drive on Thursday organizers confirmed that 59 units of blood were donated. The goal for that day was 61 units.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary at a residence in Manhattan.

Just before 11a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 2600 block of W. 56th Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp;

A 76-year-old man reported his green Yamaha Bear Tracker 250 ATV was taken. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,000.&nbsp;

Starting out playing in the beer tents when Country Stampede was in Manhattan, Travis Marvin has played on every stage.

Travis Marvin is an Ottawa, Kansas native, who has been performing in the Kansas City &nbsp;area and has previously toured with Aaron Lewis.

In 2021, Travis performed on the main stage at Country Stampede, for the third time.

For 2022, Travis is keeping the party going on the After Party stage.

Country Stampede continues through Saturday evening with Kid Rock performing as the final main stage act.

🎥: Kansas-native plays Country Stampede for 10th time

Macie Muto is the Queen and Logan Nabus the King for Geary County 4-H for the coming year. They were crowned Thursday night at the end of the 4-H Public Revue.

Muto has her goals in mind. "I want to promote 4-H and I want to be a role model to the younger members." She enjoys 4-H and said the Fair is the best part of the experience.

Nabus has been in 4-H for 10 years. "I'm excited to be&nbsp; the king this year and try to be a good role model for the young kids, keep everybody engaged in 4-H."

The 4-H Public Revue occurs just ahead of the Geary County Free Fair which opens Sunday and continues through next Thursday.

They were crowned Thursday night at the end of the 4-H Public Revue.Muto has her goals in mind. "I want to promote 4-H and I want to be a role model to the younger members." She enjoys 4-H and said the Fair is the best part of the experience.Nabus has been in 4-H for 10 years. "I'm excited to be&nbsp; the king this year and try to be a good role model for the young kids, keep everybody engaged in 4-H."The 4-H Public Revue occurs just ahead of the Geary County Free Fair which opens Sunday and continues through next Thursday.

Ark Wrecking Company, Tulsa, Oklahoma, began the demolition of the concrete grandstands at Al Simpler Stadium in Junction City Thursday. The upper portion was knocked down first. 

Spokesman Robert Fisk said they used an excavator and careful precision to do the job.&nbsp;

Fisk said they started at the top and worked to the bottom of the stadium, "to keep it safe and keep things coming down the way we want to." The grandstands were already crumbling. "Yes, it was in bad shape. It's pretty easy to come down."

Ark Wrecking is a subcontractor for Hutton Construction, the general contractor for the demolition project. Tim Chadd, Superintendent with Hutton said that they didn't know what to expect on tearing down the grandstand until they got into it. "So far it's been a really smooth process. We had a hand crew come in and take out the ticket boxes and the press box and now we're just down to steel and concrete. That material will be recycled.

The grandstand removal is part of an overall to demolish the old Junction City High School now that a new JCHS is operating on the west side of the city. 

The turfed football field and running track at the Al Simpler Stadium site will be retained and kept in use in the future. The stadium that served as the home for Blue Jay football, track and field, and in later years JCHS boys and girls soccer, first opened in 1965.&nbsp;

Concrete grandstand at Al Simpler Stadium is taken down

SALINE COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported 2002 Mercury Sable driven by Andrew Q. Flynn, 41, Abilene, was eastbound on Interstate 70 ten miles east of Salina. The car entered the south ditch, struck construction equipment and overturned.

EMS transported Flynn and a passenger Patrick P.&nbsp;Woodcox, 53, Concordia, to Salina Regional Medical Center.

Woodcox was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

2 hospitalized after car strikes construction equipment on I-70

Barton Community College at Fort Riley student Avrey Thoman was recently awarded the $500 “Stay the Course” grant from educational resource company John Wiley and Sons, Inc.

Thoman has attended Barton since Oct. 2019 and graduated in May. She is transferring to Fort Hays State University this fall to major in law and minor in criminal justice and will receive a certificate in international relations.

“I cannot express my gratitude in words,” she said. “I am also extremely grateful for Janet Balk, Amber Bebout, and Melissa Stevens. All three of them have helped me tremendously during my time at Barton. In their own ways, each of them has devoted some of their time to me and to help me. I would not be where I am academically had it not been for them. I would also like to thank my former English and Creative Writing teacher Kase Johnston. He helped me find my passion for writing again and even though it’s been a while since I’ve been in his classes, I’m still grateful.”

Barton Adjunct Math Instructor Amber Bebout nominated Thoman for the grant.

“When I first heard about the grant, I was interested in nominating a student as I know many students are in some tough spots right now with the pandemic and just day to day life occurrences,” she said. “When I first met Avrey, I immediately saw in her a determined, hardworking student. In the last year, I have seen her persevere through some tough situations and I know how important earning her degree is to her and what this support would mean for her. When I received the email notifying me that Avrey had been selected, I was so excited because Avrey has never lost sight of her desire to continue her studies despite the tough situations that have arisen for her. So, this is a bright spot on the horizon for her and she is so deserving of this grant.”

Wiley Account Manager Debbi Sewade said the program awarded 200 students $500 scholarships to help alleviate stress and clear pathways to their success during an unprecedented school year filled with hardships for many due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The grants are meant to address whatever challenges were holding students back, whether it be lack of technology, illness, reduction in work hours, etc.,” she said. “I was so delighted that a student from your school was selected. I hope this small gesture by Wiley makes a difference in the students’ lives.”

Thoman said she faced many hardships due to the pandemic.

Barton at Fort Riley student receives grant

Support continues for the Aging Well Senior Living at the Spring Valley Campus’s capital campaign. Recently, Kansas Gas Service through the ONE Gas Foundation awarded a $21,300 grant towards the Aging Well project.

Kara Titus, Kansas Gas Service Area Manager of Community Relations, helped facilitate the Foundation grant award. “We are proud to support Aging Well and the innovative and intentional services their campus will provide to Junction City seniors,” said Titus.&nbsp;

Like Kansas Gas Service, Aging Well has a mission to provide more than just minimum required services. Aging Well will build a senior campus with the small home design that creates an environment that is intentional rather than institutional. Elders’ lives will be purposeful rather than passive, and staff will focus on person rather than process. Skilled nursing and Assisted Living services will be provided.&nbsp;

The donation from Kansas Gas Service helps Aging Well move forward towards reaching their $3.5 million fundraising goal.

LaDonna Junghans, Co-Chair of the Aging Well board, shared, “It is terrific to see organizations like The ONE Gas Foundation support the communities they serve. We are so grateful they chose to recognize Aging Well with their support.”

Sphero Bolts is the title of a program that will be hosted at the 12th Street Community Center July 25, Aug. 1 and 8 from 3-4 p.m. each day. You ages 9-12 are welcome.

Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a two-vehicle injury accident on U.S. 77 at mile marker 162 Wednesday night. According to the Sheriff's Department Anthony Petrusky, Milford, was traveling in a Volkswagen Passat when he attempted to make an unsafe U-turn and was struck by a Ford Edge driven by Tiffany Junghans, Milford.&nbsp;

Both Petrusky and Junghans were treated and released on scene by EMS. Both vehicles were towed away by a wrecker service.

Bareback riding and calf roping to bull riding and mutton busting are among the many events scheduled during the 28th annual Junction City Rodeo this Friday and Saturday evenings at the Geary County 4-H Fairgrounds Arena.&nbsp; Rodeo Association President Daryl Blocker said the rodeo has grown a lot. "We've done a lot down there and each year we try to do more."

Rodeo time each night is 7:30 p.m. Friday night will be Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night. The crowning of the Rodeo Queen is scheduled Saturday night, which will also be Red, White and Blue Night.

Rodeo clown Ty "Stormin Norman" Stewart will be featured.

Advance tickets are on sale at Orschlens in Junction City. They are $9 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-12. Those under 5 are admitted free. Tickets will also be sold at the gate for $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12.&nbsp;

Volunteers are needed to help with the Stuff the Bus effort to raise school supplies for needy children.

According to Nichole Mader, Junction City / Geary County United Way Director,&nbsp; said the kickoff date is July 23. The big yellow bus where you can donate school supplies will be at the Walmart Super Center and at Dillons. Other businesses will have small cardboard buses at their location during the collection effort.

Stuff the Bus collects supplies for USD 475 Geary County and USD 473 Chapman. The Adopt a Backpack program will return this year and you can also make a cash donation.
