Junction City Manager Allen Dinkel noted this past week that the city's offer for the former JCHS site was for all 34 acres where it could be under City control. There is interest in possibly developing a future sports complex at that location. "I think there may be a counter put out there to keep some for different buildings for USD ( 475 ).

Dinkel said after conversations with city staff and with businessman Kendall Schoenrock who initially spearheaded the project, they do not believe that is a good move for the city, "and probably would not be in favor of that."

The school district currently controls the property but there have been talks with the city about the possible purchase of the site by the city for $1 once demolition work has been completed on some of the existing facilities at the site.

I can’t remember if I was helping check momma cows during calving season or chopping ice during a spell of cold weather when I was inspired to do something I shouldn’t. I do know it was about this time of year when my grandfather’s storytelling found a set of eager ears and launched a journey that would be completed a few weeks later, just about the time spring break rolled around. I was in high school, and I can still envision the scene in my grandfather’s pickup truck as he told me about the time he tried to make wine when he was about my age. From my hazy recollection, the gist of the story was he poured some yeast into a bottle of grape juice and then stuffed a cork in the neck and stowed the brew away inside his closet. Eventually, he forgot about the science experiment fermenting somewhere amongst his blue jeans and boots. The days turned into weeks before there was a sudden reckoning as the cork’s grip on the glass was overcome by a buildup of carbon dioxide and shot out, followed by the rest of the bottle’s contents. “I got in a decent amount of trouble for ruining my clothes,” my grandfather told me. “But my closet sure smelled good for a long time.” Even while I was laughing at the punchline, my mind was forming a plan to conduct my own experiment. I even had the benefit of knowing a cork shouldn’t be used. I also took satisfaction in the apparent loophole my grandfather helped me see. While I was too young to buy alcohol, there was no such prohibition on sourcing all of the necessary ingredients. It didn’t take long to recruit a friend to help complete this small act of rebellion. We soon abandoned our initial plan to create our own vintage with freshly crushed grapes in favor of a couple bottles of juice off a shelf, a sack of sugar and some yeast. These supplies were artfully split between two different shopping carts so as to avoid raising any suspicions of their intended use. We retreated to the cover of my friend’s kitchen to begin mixing the elixir, an act we were old enough to know was wrong, but we were young enough to do it anyway. We spooned in sugar and added bread yeast before stretching balloons over the lips of each bottle. Then we waited. Periodically checking the concoction over the next few weeks provided a great view of chemistry in action. The yeast consumed the sugar producing enough carbon dioxide to fill the balloon, which was evidence our plan was working. When the rubber orbs started to deflate a few weeks later, it was finally time to test our winemaking skills. We were naïve enough to hope we’d brewed something amazing. We would have settled for something that was merely drinkable. Our sights were set way too high. While the liquid gave off an almost pleasant aroma as we strained it through coffee filters, the initial sip was overpowering. So much so that I had a much more intimate understanding of what Roger Miller was singing about in “Chug-a-Lug”. We didn’t make it much beyond the initial tasting before abandoning the idea of drinking our wine. I’m sure it could have been repurposed to strip varnish or a ground clearing herbicide, though. The only buzz I received from the wine was the bit of wisdom that my grandfather was lucky to have forgotten that bottle in his closet. &nbsp;

GEARY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

Just after 11:30p.m. Sunday, Geary County sheriff’s deputies booked a suspect identified as Jeremiah Tyrell Ballance, 24, of Jacksonville, North Carolina. into the Geary County Detention Center, according to online jail records.

Ballance is being held on requested charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child; aggravated indecent solicitation of a child; and aggravated intimidation of a witness or victim.

He is being held on a $50,000 bond, according to online jail records.

On Sunday, officers filed a report for aggravated arson in the 2317 block&nbsp; Tuttle Creek Blvd. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.. RC McGraws Tavern reported an 11-year-old suspect started a fire in the bathroom of RC McGraws Blue Hills Room.&nbsp;

The single-story bar and grill was occupied at the time of the fire. There were no injuries and everyone evacuated safely. Fire loss is estimated at $5000 to the structure and $7000 to the contents. The owner is listed as RLD Properties LLC of Summerfield, Kansas.

Upon arrival, crews found a small fire that had been partially extinguished.&nbsp; The remaining fire was extinguished within five minutes of arrival and all incoming crews were downgraded to non-emergent to assist with checking for extension and to assist with ventilating the structure. The building, a single-story bar and grill was occupied at the time of the fire.&nbsp; There were no injuries and everyone evacuated safely.&nbsp;Fire loss is estimated at $5000 to the structure and $7000 to the contents. Legislators air their views on issues Saturday in Junction City

MANHATTAN—Kansas State University is encouraging students affected by the second shooting in the Aggieville district in less than two months to get counseling.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, three officers from RCPD were working in the police substation in Aggieville when they heard gunshots, according to a media release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

 The officers immediately responded&nbsp;outside a bar near 12th&nbsp;and Moro Street and they found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They also observed an armed man nearby who ran from the area. Two officers chased the suspect on foot, while the third officer remained with the shooting victim and rendered first-aid. The victim was later identified as Joshua J. Wardi, 21, of Fort Riley who died.

The shooting suspect was identified as Tremelle R. Montgomery, 19, of Fort Riley. EMS transported him to Ascension Via Christi hospital in Manhattan where he was then transferred to a Topeka hospital. .

On December 12, two 24-year-old men were injured during gunfire at Tate's Bar, 1109 Moro in Aggieville.

There is an effort to develop a JC statue that can tell&nbsp; the Junction City story for downtown. It's a project undertaken by a Main Street program subcommittee. 

The Interim Director for Main Street, Jerry Lonergan, said there would be about 10 statues at various locations in the downtown area. "We hope like a business will adopt them and fund the artist rendition of the work. The committee will actually approve the design. "

Lonergan also noted that KSU-Salina students will make the mold and pour ten statues for the project.&nbsp;

Emerging scholars can submit a presentation abstract as a featured speaker during the annual D-Day Commemorative Symposium. The Eisenhower, Roosevelt and Truman Presidential Libraries are seeking submissions from emerging scholars to be a featured speaker during a virtual symposium the first week of June. The symposium will focus on specialized topics related to the Allied effort in World War II.

The symposium seeks to examine the reporting of the war from&nbsp; the front, news of home to those fighting and war propaganda that helped unite the two.&nbsp;

Each program is scheduled for one hour. The guest speaker will present their topic for approximately 40 minutes and then there will be questions at the end. Each program wraps up with a Scholar Spotlight where you can get to know more about each of the up and coming scholars.

Run for the Wall returns in 2022. The cross country motorcycle ride begins in California and makes Junction City one of the overnight stopping points as riders travel across the country to Washington D.C.

The riders will arrive in Junction City on May 22nd. Planners for the event noted that about 4:45 p.m. volunteers will line both sides of Washington Street with 300 U.S.&nbsp; flags. When the riders arrive at Heritage Park there will be a brief ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and dinner will then be served to the riders at the Junction City Eagles Lodge at 203 East 10th Street.

The morning of May 23rd breakfast will be provided to the riders at the Eagles Lodge and they will then depart Junction City and continue on their trip at 8 a.m.

The purpose of Run for the Wall is to promote healing among all veterans and their families and friends, to call for an accounting of all Prisoners of War and those Missing in Action, to honor the memory of those Killed in Action from all wards, and to support military personnel all over the world.

Kansas I-70 Association establishes a scholarship program

RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred after a man was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Manhattan, according to a media release from the KBI.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, three officers from RCPD were working in the police substation in Aggieville when they heard gunshots. The officers immediately responded in the direction of the gunfire.

When they arrived outside a bar near 12th&nbsp;and Moro St., they found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They also observed an armed man nearby who ran from the area. Two officers chased the suspect on foot, while the third officer remained with the shooting victim and rendered first-aid. The victim was later identified as Joshua J. Wardi, 21, of Fort Riley.

Preliminary information indicates that as the armed suspect fled, he turned the corner onto 12th&nbsp;St. During the foot chase, one of the RCPD officers fired two rounds at the suspect, striking him in the leg, and causing him to stop part way down the block, between Moro Street and Laramie Street. Officers secured the handgun and provided medical assistance. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The shooting suspect was identified as Tremelle R. Montgomery, 19, of Fort Riley. EMS transported him to Ascension Via Christi hospital in Manhattan where he was then transferred to a Topeka hospital. Montgomery is currently in fair and stable condition. Wardi was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The investigation suggests that earlier Friday night Wardi and Montgomery patronized the same bar in Aggieville. Later, while visiting outside in separate groups of friends, they engaged in a verbal altercation. At that time witnesses say Montgomery pulled out a gun and shot Wardi.

MANHATTAN, KAN. –&nbsp;A Ft. Riley man died after apparently being shot by another Ft. Riley man in the 1100 block of Moro Street in Manhattan, according to a media release from the Riley County Police Department.

The 19-year-old shooting suspect is in stable condition after being shot by an RCPD officer following the apparent homicide.

Officers located in the 1100 block of Moro responded to the sound of gunshots in the immediate area around 12:32 a.m. on Saturday, February 5. The officers found a 21-year-old male victim on the sidewalk suffering from apparent gunshot wound(s), he was later pronounced deceased on scene.

 </figure>RILEY COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred after a man was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Manhattan, according to a media release from the KBI.At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, three officers from RCPD were working in the police substation in Aggieville when they heard gunshots. The officers immediately responded in the direction of the gunfire.When they arrived outside a bar near 12th&nbsp;and Moro St., they found a 21-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. They also observed an armed man nearby who ran from the area. Two officers chased the suspect on foot, while the third officer remained with the shooting victim and rendered first-aid. The victim was later identified as Joshua J. Wardi, 21, of Fort Riley.Preliminary information indicates that as the armed suspect fled, he turned the corner onto 12th&nbsp;St. During the foot chase, one of the RCPD officers fired two rounds at the suspect, striking him in the leg, and causing him to stop part way down the block, between Moro Street and Laramie Street. Officers secured the handgun and provided medical assistance. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.The shooting suspect was identified as Tremelle R. Montgomery, 19, of Fort Riley. EMS transported him to Ascension Via Christi hospital in Manhattan where he was then transferred to a Topeka hospital. Montgomery is currently in fair and stable condition. Wardi was pronounced deceased at the scene.The investigation suggests that earlier Friday night Wardi and Montgomery patronized the same bar in Aggieville. Later, while visiting outside in separate groups of friends, they engaged in a verbal altercation. Police ID homicide victim, suspect in officer-shooting in Aggieville

RENO COUNTY —Two people died in an accident just after 4p.m. Friday in Reno County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Ford Mustang driven by Matthew H. Monroe, 17, Nickerson, was southbound on Kansas 14 three miles south of Nickerson. 

When traffic was slowing down, the Ford rear-ended a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant driven by Alexander K. Dennis, 30, Junction City.&nbsp; The impact forced the Mitsubishi to enter into the northbound lanes.&nbsp;

A northbound 2006 Peterbilt semi driven by Clarence R. Messick, 60, Saint John, struck the Mitsubishi.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Mitsubishi then struck the trailer of a 2009 Chevy Suburban driven by Jeffery W. Mehl, 52, Hutchinson.

After impact, the semi continued north, jackknifed on the west shoulder and struck a 2022 Ram truck driven by Casey D. Gamble, 38, Hutchinson.

EMS transported Dennis and Messick to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where Dennis was pronounced dead. A passenger in the Mitsubishi 13-year-old Teagan Lomax of South Hutchison, was pronounced dead at the scene.

 Monroe, Mehl, 5 passengers in the Chevy and Gamble were not injured. The occupants of the Mitsubishi were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

Junction City man, 13-year-old dead after 5-vehicle crash

The Manhattan Indians defeated the Junction City Lady Jays Friday night, at Manhattan High School, 49 to 28.

Groundbreaking for a new 81,000 square foot elementary school at 4720 Leonard Avenue on Fort Riley will be held March 4th at 1 p.m. This will be a 390 student capacity school that will be built on the same land where Jefferson Elementary School was previously located.&nbsp;

According to a release from Geary USD 475 the project will be a collaborative effort between the district, Fort Riley, Hutton Construction and SJCF Architecture. The school will serve prekindergarten through fifth-grade students.

Those attending the event March 4th will hear from state, local and military leaders, district representatives and see student performances along with the groundbreaking.

The menu will include waffles, pancakes, sausage and homemade ice cream. The cost will be $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 and free for children 5 and under. Reservations are not required.

The lineup for the Freedom Fest - Junction City celebration this summer was unveiled Friday morning.&nbsp;

Speaking during a Municipal Building press conference a member of the group working to bring the new celebration to the community, Ashley King, provided details. "From the very beginning Freedom Fest's goal is to provide entertainment for the entire family in downtown Junction City during the Fourth of July weekend. We are confident we'll do just that. "

King announced that WEEI Entertainment, previously known as Ottawa Amusements Co., will be located along 6th and Jefferson in downtown Junction City June 30th through July 4th. They will have carnival rides, funnel cakes, Fried Oreos and other activities. "In addition to the carnival there will be numerous food and craft vendors in Heritage Park, performances by Disco Dick &amp; Mirrorballs, Paramount, ZZ-KC ( a ZZ Top Tribute Band ), Rock Gods, Brandon Estelle and Rhett Walker." There will also be a future headliner performer but an announcement on that show has not yet been made.

There will be food and craft vendors in Heritage Park plus entertainers for the family including Hog Diggity Dogs, The Circus Man and Agri Puppets. Those acts will perform July 2nd through July 4th.&nbsp;

King noted Freedom Fest is possible because of donations that have been received and there will be a couple of fundraisers in the future including a golf tournament at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.&nbsp;

Freedom Fest Chair Nate Butler said the current projected budget for the celebration is about $123,000 to $125,000. "We're well into that amount being raised. We've got a lot of great sponsors who've come along and said, hey, we want to see this happen."

Butler said Saturday night, July 2nd,&nbsp; will be the big night, "where we'll have a big fireworks show and a street dance after the fireworks show. On Sunday, July 3rd, there will be a combined morning worship celebration in Heritage Park plus that evening Christian music performers Brandon Estelle and Rhett Walker. There is planning under way for an additional fireworks show on Monday, July 4th.

There will also be a separate Sundown Salute celebration this year, with many of the activities in Milford and some in Junction City.

A 24-year-old man reported his silver 2006 Ford F-150 truck was stolen with a Savage 64 .22 rifle inside. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $15,000. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

RCPD investigating another gun theft in Manhattan

DICKINSON COUNTY —The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has awarded $2 million to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along the state’s most traveled highways, according to a media release from the agency.

KDOT received 32 project proposals seeking to use $2 million of the state’s allocation of Volkswagen Mitigation Trust funds dedicated to the installation of Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) stations. KDOT had identified 12 priority locations for these funds to improve public access to charging stations along primary corridors, to which applicants made their case for providing EV services.

“The quality of proposals made the selection process very competitive, and it was clear there is much support across Kansas for electric vehicles and infrastructure,” said Matt Messina, KDOT’s Transportation Planning Manager. “Many applicants proved dedication to EV services beyond the required five-year commitment as they are eager to promote transportation options.”

Staff from KDOT, the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment and a team of consultants evaluated each project proposal and made selections based on criteria provided in a Request for Proposals (RFP) announced in October 2021. Responses were due mid-December 2021.

Each award recipient is responsible for providing 20% of the project cost, bringing the total estimated investment for the seven selected proposals to nearly $2.5 million. Proposals selected to receive an award are identified below.

Main Street Committee members have chosen a 131 West 7th Street building recently acquired by the Opera House to be&nbsp; the site for a temporary Main Street office. Main Street will move in by April 1st and pay rent totaling $500 per month.

Main Street Committee Chair Maureen Gustafson noted that the Opera House just purchased the building at 131 West 7th Street. "We're going to temporarily rent that from them for a six month period of time with the idea of figuring out where we might want to permanently land."

The new slate of officers&nbsp; for Main Street for the coming year will include Maureen Gustafson as Chair, Sheila Markley Vice-Chair. Brad Johnson Treasurer, Todd Godfrey Secretary and Theresa Bramlage Past Chair. Also Terry Butler has left the committee and will be serving on a volunteer basis as Main Street Development Director. Mimi Khoury has joined the committee as an under 25 years old board member.&nbsp;
