The income eligibility limit for the 2022 LIEAP program is 150% of the federal poverty income. Individuals with a gross monthly income of up to $1,610 are eligible to apply. The application period for LIEAP funds ends March 31.

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investing an alleged aggravated battery in Manhattan and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 6:30a.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery and criminal damage to property in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. 

A 19-year-old woman and a 61-year-old woman&nbsp; reported an 18-year-old male suspect punched and hit the 19-year-old with a child's chair&nbsp; during an altercation. The suspect damaged multiple items in the 61-year-old's home. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $500. Police arrested Alapeti Manuel Ware Jr., 19, of Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated battery and criminal damage to property. He is currently confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $10,000.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s “Celebration of Optimism” held Wednesday at the Hampton Inn included recognition of Windy Hancock, the current McKinney-Veto Coordinator for USD 475 with the JC Breakfast Optimist Club’s “Making A Difference For Youth Award”; a “Getting To Know Our Optimist Club Members” presentation by Marcia Fiorentino, Freshman Success Academy Principal at Junction City High School and a “Conversation with Red and Gloria Dunham”, long time Optimist Club members.

Before Windy Hancock worked at Junction City High School before becoming the McKinney-Veto Coordinator for Geary County Schools(a program to assist homeless and disadvantaged children). Dana Wiegand, coordinator ofthe Optimist’s Recognition Committee, stated that Windy has sacrificed her personal time to cloth students through the JCHS Blue Door program, fed students through events like “Turkey Tutoring” and “Egg Excellence”and tutored any student who needed academic support. The “Turkey Tutoring” and Spring Break programs were created as an opportunity to provide tutoring for high school students by teacher volunteers and breakfast and lunch for the students which were donated by local businesses and community members. She also sent students home with snack bags of granola bars, popcorn, mac and cheese, oatmeal fruit and other goodies, which helped feed our most at risk students.”

Wiegand further said that “Windy gave out stockings to students during December, but unlike Santa, Windy’s stockings were not the tangible gifts of treats, they were the gift of Grace. Windy Hancock sees each student as an individual, supports them in their imperfectstate and celebrates them along the way.”

Marcie Fiorentino, a new member of the JC Breakfast Optimist Club, has come to Junction City as an administrative leader at JCHS. She stated that “When I was young, I never wanted to be a teacher or administrator, because I saw how hard my parents worked.” Then her life changed when she became a camp counselor for middle school students. “I loved working with those kids” she stated. During her teacher internship, Marcie was told by one of her college professors that she had the skills to be a school leader or administrator. One thing led to another, and she is now the Freshman Success Academy Principal at Junction City High School. “My parents lived in Wakefield, Kansas.”That drew her interest to this area, which she described as being quite different from life in New Jersey. “People’s values are different here. Even when there is no traffic at a cross walk and the light is red for the pedestrian, people wait until the light changes to green. I like that. People seem to care more about others too.” she said.

Red and Gloria Dunham have been involved with the local Optimist Club for over 50 years. Each of them hasseen many changes. “We used to sell Christmas Trees and fireworks and had Burger and Bean and Pancake Feeds, which we no longer do. We had about 40 members”when we did those fundraisers”, Red said. Red also told club members that “The Optimist Club organized a Soap Box Derby competition and sent Dana Wolf to the national competition in Akron, Ohio. (That car is still located in the archives of the Geary County Historical Society Museum). Other projects for youth included a Hoop Shoot Contest, Kids Bowling, establishment of the Girls Softball Field at the Geary County Fair Grounds and a shelter at South Park.” Gloria was a member of the Opti-Mrs. Club, which was organized in 1975 and separate from the men’s club. “We prepared meals for Optimist Club socials in the summer and around Christmas time and assisted with fundraisers” Gloria shared. The women later joined the men’s club and supported the activities as a single unit.

A 21-year-old man reported an unknown suspect threatened him with jail time if he didn't pay for medical bills. 

The victim then sent the suspect $1,000.&nbsp;

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

On Tuesday at 5:40 a.m.&nbsp; the Junction City Fire Department responded to a report of a house on fire AT 624 West Third Street. Dispatch reported that three people were able to evacuate, but one person was still inside of the structure. 

According to the Fire Department firefighters arrived on scene within two minutes and reported flames showing on the back side of the residence. The crews were able to initiate fire attack and perform a search and rescue simultaneously. They located and evacuated one person from the residence. The fire was contained to the garage and a small section of the house. The blaze was declared out and salvage and overhaul were initiated.

One occupant in stable condition, was taken to the hospital by ambulance and no firefighters were injured.

A total of 16 firefighters manning two Engine companies, 1oneTruck company, two Med Units and one Fire Marshal responded to the scene. The fire is currently under investigation.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Plans to house both KU and K-State in the Big First congressional district have been introduced in the Kansas Senate’s preliminary redistricting map.

<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/members/sen_masterson_ty_1/" target="_blank">Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson</a>&nbsp;says he and chairs of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2021_22/committees/ctte_s_redistricting_1/" target="_blank">Senate Redistricting Committee</a>&nbsp;introduced a preliminary Congressional Map on Tuesday, Jan. 18, based on suggestions from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2021/11/17/house-senate-committees-redistricting-host-second-round-community-meetings/" target="_blank">in-person and virtual listening tours</a>&nbsp;throughout the state. He said the same map was also introduced by Chairman Croft in the House Redistricting Committee.

According to Masterson, the map maintains the required minimum of three split counties - Pawnee, Douglas and Wyandotte. Both Douglas and Wyandotte counties are primarily divided along natural and geographic barriers like highways and rivers.

Kansas’s Second District will include several military installations -&nbsp;<a href="https://home.army.mil/riley/index.php" target="_blank">Ft. Riley</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://home.army.mil/leavenworth/index.php" target="_blank">Ft. Leavenworth</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.190arw.ang.af.mil/About-Us/Our-Mission/" target="_blank">Forbes Field</a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansastag.gov/ng_default.asp" target="_blank">Kansas National Guard.</a>

The Third District will keep Johnson Co. together and blend the Kansas City suburbs with nearby bedroom communities while the Fourth District will be the home of Wichita and its surrounding communities.

According to Masterson, the new map retains political fairness as it maintains all four members of Congress within their districts and all four would still have won in 2020.

“This map is reflective of the testimony we received from the public, both on the 14-stop listening tour in August and the virtual listening tour in November,” said Masterson and Wilborn in a joint statement.&nbsp;“The map creates compact and contiguous districts, preserves existing district cores, and groups together communities of interest.&nbsp;We look forward to the hearings and helping advance this map through the legislative process.”

He said that they had a good conversation on where everyone stood moving forward. "They're still looking at some things. I expressed on behalf of the commission where we kind of stood in terms of our thoughts and what our outlook for the hospital was."

Geary Community Hospital is facing significant financial challenges. Tyson said he conveyed the County's stance on what the community needs, "and what the potential impact would be if we were to lose our...sold, or whatever direction the Hospital's going in. I think that I spoke about that pretty well. " Tyson added he hopes some things can be figured out to get GCH back on track.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a pair of vehicle thefts in Manhattan.

Just before 7p.m. Jan. 14, officers filed a report for theft in the 2500 block of Farm Bureau Road in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 A 20-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole his brown 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $6,500.&nbsp;

Just after 3:30a.m. Jan. 16, officers filed a report for theft, criminal damage to property, and burglary in the 1500 block of College Avenue in Manhattan.&nbsp; A 19-year-old man&nbsp; reported an unknown suspect stole his white 2002 Chevrolet 1500 truck. 

The truck was later recovered with a damaged window and steering column, and a Taurus 9mm handgun stolen from it. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is still being determined at this time.&nbsp;

Anyone with information on these cases should contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas 4-H program has added a pair of projects that organizers say will help prepare youth for careers and educational options in science, technology, engineering and math, commonly known as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/projects/stem-science-technology-engineering-and-math/index.html" target="_blank">STEM</a>.&nbsp;

And, oh by the way, one approach? Playing with Lego blocks.&nbsp;

“With all of our projects, we strive to make a connection to how what youth are doing is relevant to a potential career,” said Shane Potter, a Kansas 4-H youth development specialist. “And, how can we set youth up for success while exploring educational options.”&nbsp;

The state’s 4-H program has&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/projects" target="_blank">nearly three dozen projects</a>&nbsp;available to youth. Potter said the two newest options – agricultural mechanics and architectural block construction – were tested last year and are now part of the regular offerings.&nbsp;

“These two projects,” he said, “help us to further explore the areas of ag mechanics and architecture that we knew were&nbsp;&nbsp;important but we may not have been addressing to the full extent that we could be.”&nbsp;

The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/projects/stem-science-technology-engineering-and-math/architectural-block-construction/index.html" target="_blank">architectural block construction project</a>&nbsp;is a lot like what it sounds: it takes advantage of the popular building blocks made by the Lego company. Youth are encouraged to construct dioramas and explore architecture in a three dimensional space, according to Potter.&nbsp;

As in all 4-H projects, the young architects are encouraged to progress in their understanding of design elements, beginning with a diorama that includes two features beyond floors, ceilings and walls, and eventually progressing to “Master” (10 years or more experience) where they can build a diorama with up to eight architectural features and three or more motion elements.&nbsp;

Potter said the architecture project is unique to Kansas 4-H and was developed as a result of “hard working 4-H volunteers who are part of the 4-H STEM action team,” he said.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/projects/stem-science-technology-engineering-and-math/ag-mechanics/index.html" target="_blank">Agricultural mechanics</a>&nbsp;focuses on welding and metalsmithing, encouraging youth to not only learn the skills, but view them as the foundation of their own business.&nbsp;

“They work with adults and try things out in a safe way, and we provide the curriculum and resources to learn the correct way so they are prepared when they move on to the next steps,” Potter said.&nbsp;

He added that the Kansas 4-H program initially started with the area of welding but hopes to expand into other areas like precision agriculture and leverage university and industry partners as experts.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;.&nbsp;

“We offered this opportunity for the first time at last year’s Kansas State Fair,” Potter said. “We had a lot of interest, and we had some amazing projects that were created, even in the first year. The governing body will be in session from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday at the County Office Building.

Junction City Land Bank Board will be in session at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday followed by the Junction City Commission at 7 p.m. at 701 North Jefferson.&nbsp;

Courage Awards are being given to five local authors

Glenn Brunkow, Pottawatomie County farmer and rancher This past week I returned from one of the best weeks of the year, the American Farm Bureau Convention and Annual Meeting. It is truly something I look forward to each year and a highlight on my calendar. My favorite thing about the meeting is people in agriculture from all across the United States come together to decide on how to tackle the toughest issues facing our industry. I always meet new and interesting people like the sweet potato farmer from Mississippi I got to eat lunch with on Sunday. Our crops may have been different, but we spoke one common language — agriculture. I really enjoy just hanging out in the hallways listening to everyone talk about the weather and what was going on at their farms and ranches. It is a time to renew old friendships like my good friend Ben from Georgia or my buddy Rick from Idaho. We see each other once a year, but it does not take long to catch up on our lives. I love listening to the different accents and ways of communicating. The American Farm Bureau is truly a big tent organization; the meeting brings in producers from all across the nation. All types of agriculture from vegetables to honey, row crops, cattle and everything in between. You will find some of the largest farmers and ranchers in the same room as producers with much smaller operations. The best part is that there is a seat at the table for everyone. I really enjoy the general sessions, and this year I attended some highly informative workshops. I also had the privilege of judging the Young Farmer and Ranchers Committee’s Excellence in Agriculture award. I have to say it was humbling to listen to all the great accomplishments of the applicants, the amount of work they have done is absolutely amazing. I am also sure the tours were fantastic but, in my mind, those great events were not the most important part of our week in Atlanta. The annual business meeting of the American Farm Bureau Federation is what we all come for. When we take the ideas that started out at the grassroots level and were distilled and refined through the state and national process and make the final tweaks before we adopt them. This policy making process is the blueprint of what will happen for the next year, our playbook of how to guide legislators and regulators for the benefit of agriculture. This process is tough, and it can be contentious at times. When you have an organization as diverse as ours not everyone will agree on how things should be done. In the end, arguments are presented, and points are made. The voting delegates take the information provided to them and make decisions shaping ag policy for at least the next year if not longer. Almost as soon as the gavel sounds, members begin working on policy for next year and looking forward to another good week in January.

MAYPORT, Fla. - (Jan 8, 2022) - Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Josh Eckel, a native of Junction City, Kansas, was recently promoted to petty officer first class.&nbsp;

Eckel graduated from Junction City High School in 2010 and obtained his associate’s degree from American Military University in 2017.&nbsp;

As a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve, Eckel works as a hospital corpsman.&nbsp;

"Previously as a preventative medicine technician I would identify, evaluate, monitor, and respond to diseases and environmental factors that threaten human health," said Eckel. “But now as a command fitness leader, I handle monthly medical reports and my goal is to make it easier to check on our sailors and bump up medical readiness.”&nbsp;

Eckel was promoted to his current rank on December 10, 2021.&nbsp;

Junction City native is promoted

Tuesday, Feb. 22, will be the date for the rescheduled Fort Riley Spouses Welcome. The Chamber of Commerce noted that there will be a bus tour of local attractions.

Junction City Municipal Building is the site for the meet-up location and there will be a shuttle pick-up at the Main Post Exchange and at the USO.

In December, the Board approved the early release of GMP Package #1 for $3,995,987. During the bid opening on Jan. 5, the competitive bid pricing was secured for GMP Package #2 from Hutton Construction at $7,616,417. This package includes site grading (rough and final), underground storm, water, gas and electrical utilities, and paving (including curbs and gutters). 

The Board approved this amendment, allowing for the purchase of long lead time utility supplies and timely preparation of the site for the start of the vertical construction when spring weather permits.

BOE approves GMP Package Two for new school

Geary County Sheriff Dan Jackson has confirmed that a COVID-19 outbreak was identified Friday in the county jail. A number of inmates complained of symptoms. "So we got with our nursing staff up there and we started testing people. We ended up with nine inmates positive in two pods ( combined ),&nbsp; and at that point we had already made contact with the Health Department and they said well just stop testing right now. You're really just wasting your tests because we're pretty certain that it's spread throughout the jail."

Jackson said the Sheriff's Department has stopped all extraditions, is not releasing any prisoners to any other counties and is not picking any prisoners up. "Kind of trying to hold what we've got inside the jail right now."

Jackson noted that the Department has never stopped having COVID protocols in place but the new variant is super-easy to catch. "On Tuesday the Health Department will be coming out and they'll test every single inmate as well as all of the staff, all of the corrections officers, all the Deputies and all the admin staff. We'll all get tested and then we'll have a baseline of where we're at, at that point, and then we'll just go from there."

 </figure>By Dewey TerrillJC PostGeary County Sheriff Dan Jackson has confirmed that a COVID-19 outbreak was identified Friday in the county jail. A number of inmates complained of symptoms. "So we got with our nursing staff up there and we started testing people. We ended up with nine inmates positive in two pods ( combined ),&nbsp; and at that point we had already made contact with the Health Department and they said well just stop testing right now. You're really just wasting your tests because we're pretty certain that it's spread throughout the jail."Jackson said the Sheriff's Department has stopped all extraditions, is not releasing any prisoners to any other counties and is not picking any prisoners up. "Kind of trying to hold what we've got inside the jail right now."Jackson noted that the Department has never stopped having COVID protocols in place but the new variant is super-easy to catch. "On Tuesday the Health Department will be coming out and they'll test every single inmate as well as all of the staff, all of the corrections officers, all the Deputies and all the admin staff. COVID-19 outbreak occurs in the Geary County jail

Junction City Police Chief John Lamb confirmed for JC Post that a Fort Riley Soldier, 29,&nbsp; was the victim in an accidental, self-inflicted&nbsp; shooting that occurred Thursday evening on Cypress Street. His identity has not been released, but the Soldier is recovering at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.

The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Thursday in the Soldier's vehicle in front of his residence.
