Select law enforcement officers and employees who have performed exemplary service beyond their normal duties in 2020 / 2021 will be honored in the seventh annual Law Enforcement Officer of the Year banquet. The banquet, hosted by Junction City / Geary County Crime Stoppers,&nbsp; will be held Friday, March 4th from 6-9 p.m. at the Milford Lake Conference Center at Acorns Resort.

Up to 14 honorees will be selected from among multiple law enforcement agencies. The purpose of the banquet is to demonstrate citizen support for the law enforcement agencies that serve in Geary County.

Table sponsorship includes two event tickets ( more if needed ) for the sponsor and a placard on the table stating sponsorship. A table consists of eight people, and the other six tickets are given to local law enforcement to attend. There will be a buffet style meal, followed by a guest speaker and presentation of awards. Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a single vehicle accident about 8:45 Friday evening on I-70 about two miles west of Junction City.&nbsp;

Jimmy R. Dowell, Clay Center, was traveling westbound in a Mitsubishi Lancer when the vehicle left the roadway. It came to a stop after approximately 100 feet in a ditch on the north ide of the road. No injuries were reported.

MANHATTAN – The Kansas State University crops team completed its season recently with runner-up finishes at the Kansas City American Royal Collegiate Crops Contest and the National Collegiate Crops Contest in Ames, Iowa.&nbsp;

Iowa State University won both events to claim the national championship for 2021. The University of Minnesota-Crookston placed third at the American Royal, and South Dakota State University placed third at the national contest.&nbsp;

K-State had won both events for each of the past three years and for 17 of the past 21 years through 2019. Both were cancelled last year due to COVID. K-State placed first in the central regional contest in Oklahoma earlier in the fall. &nbsp;

In the contests, participants are required to identify 200 different plant or seed samples of crops and weeds; grade eight different samples of grain according to Federal Grain Inspection Service standards; and analyze ten seed samples to determine what contaminants they contain. &nbsp;

Members of K-State’s team include seniors Alex Kaufmann, Concordia; Evan Bott, Palmer; and Trevor Mullen, Salina. Team alternates include sophomores Ellie Braun, Belvue; Leah Hudson, Rossville; and Ashley Chandler, Neodesha; plus juniors Jaime Knight, Kansas City; and Caleb Kats, Silver Lake.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

K-State placed first in grain grading and plant and seed identification at the national contest, and second in seed analysis.&nbsp;

At the American Royal, K-State placed first in plant and seed identification and second in the other two categories.&nbsp;

Individually,&nbsp;Bott placed fourth at nationals and second at the American Royal, while Kaufmann was fifth and third at those same contests. Bott also placed first in identification at both events, and second at KC and third at Ames in grain grading. Kaufmann placed second in identification at both contests. Mullen was first in grain grading at the American Royal.&nbsp;

The team was coached by Kevin Donnelly, K-State professor of agronomy. Graduate students Luke Ryan (Solomon) and Sarah Zerger (Abilene) were assistant coaches. &nbsp;

The American Royal coordinated the Kansas City contest, with Corteva Agriscience as the primary sponsor. Additional sponsors were CHS, American Society of Agronomy, Association of Official Seed Analysts and the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association. &nbsp;

The primary sponsor of the Ames contest was the CME Group. Additional donors included the Crop Science Society of America, Growmark Cooperative, the Society of Commercial Seed Technologists and Syngenta.&nbsp;

Geary USD 475 will lease 1,150 dell 5420 computers from Dell and Dell Financial Services for total lease payments of $1,000,258.69. The Board of Education approved a recommendation for that decision at their meeting this week.

Charles Martinez, Interim Director of the Geary County Health Department, noted on Friday that Governor Kelly has declared a state of emergency due to the situation. Geary County's health system is currently operating in contingency staffing and in danger of moving to crisis staffing.&nbsp;

COVID-19 patients have increased since the holidays. The new Omicron variant is more transmissible than Delta but the symptoms experienced are less severe. The number of patient needing care has placed a strain on resources. Martinez said to relieve the health system' pressure, we need to slow the pace at which COVID-19 is spreading. That can be achieved by three steps.

--Get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms after a known or suspected exposure.

Martinez said it's expected by the end of January we should start to see a decline in the number of COVID-19 patients, with the second wave of holiday patients recovering.&nbsp; That will bring staff back into the system and beds will begin opening again.

Geary County Rural Fire officials confirm that the cause of a fire in Milford on Thursday stemmed from a child playing with a lighter. A house at 209 Whiting was a total loss in the incident.

The residence was occupied by the Mary Henning family. No one was injured. There was some insurance coverage.

Geary County Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges said Thursday that firefighters responded to Milford. The call came in to dispatchers just before 10 a.m. "Initially the report was that just the porch was on fire. It was located in the 200 block of Whiting Street ( 209 Whiting ), which is in the central part of the city of Milford."

Prior to arrival by firefighters the blaze spread to the rest of the house, said Berges. "The entire residence was engulfed in fire when we arrived on scene. " Geary County Rural Fire responded and there was an ambulance on standby from the Junction City Fire Department. Fort Riley Fire Department was also asked to respond because of surrounding structures that were in danger. The fire was brought under control at approximately 10:15 to 10:30 a.m.

There were no injuries. The Red Cross responded to the scene to help the family that resided in the house. A damage estimate and the cause of the fire are not yet known.

The Army said&nbsp; year-long campaign focuses on bringing Families and Soldiers together to build strength and resilence, informing them about available resources on and around Fort Riley, and showing appreciation for their continued support.

The Big Red One Year of Family will provide a venue that enables its Families to be more resilient by aligning opportunities with the five dimensions of strength. It’s is broken down into signature events, events, and initiatives throughout the year for Soldiers and Families to take part in.

Signature events are impactful quarterly events to gather and celebrate the 1st Infantry Division’s diverse Families.&nbsp;

Events are short in duration, typically a single-day occurrence. They are planned and conducted at the battalion, brigade and division levels.

Initiatives are longer duration involving multiple events over several months focused on a specific dimension of strength. They are planned and accomplished at the division or brigade level.

Emotional Strength. Approaching life’s challenges in a positive, optimistic way by demonstrating self-control, stamina, and good character with your choices and actions.

Just after 6:30a.m. Thursday, officers filed a report for aggravated burglary and criminal damage to property in the 1200 block of Kearney Street in Manhattan.

Two women reported an unknown suspect broke into their apartment, waking up one of the victims, then left. It is unknown if anything was taken at this time. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $100 for the damaged door.&nbsp;

Three adults reported an unknown suspect broke into their home overnight through a window while they were sleeping and stole multiple purses and wallets, a laptop computer, a camera, and cash. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,500. 

Just before 9:30a.m., officers filed a report for burglary in the 14,900 block of Seven Springs Road in Leonardville. A 58-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man&nbsp; reported an unknown suspect broke into their house and sheds and stole a .22 caliber handgun, a .45 caliber handgun, a camera, a camcorder, a cowboy hat, and $300 cash. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $4,100. 

Anyone with information on these crimes can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

A 26-year-old man reported an unknown suspect sent him an email posing as a Kansas State University employee offering a job. The victim received a check from the suspect that he deposited in his bank account and returned the money to the suspect. The check then bounced. 

The victim also made numerous deposits to the suspect through gift cards and Zeele, a digital payment system.

 The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $10,000. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Winter weather advisory will begin Friday evening

The Grateful Dudes and Sam Markley are scheduled to perform on Saturday at the C. L. Hoover Opera House. No tickets are required. There is a $10 charge at the door.

Due to a rise in COVID-19 conditions and staffing shortages, all Geary County Schools will be closed Friday, January 14. The Devin Center and Larry Dixon Center will remain open. 

Initially Junction City High School students were off on Friday and it was a teacher work day, but now all schools will be closed.

According to a USD 475 social media release Junction City High School athletic events scheduled for Topeka, Wichita, and Hays on Friday evening and Saturday will continue as planned. School will not be in session on Monday, January 17, to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. 

School will resume as normal on Tuesday, January 18, unless notified otherwise.

There will be no school for all Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 students on Friday, January 14, due to staffing shortages caused by COVID-19. Monday, January 17 is a federal holiday. School will resume on Tuesday, January 18.

Multicultural Celebration is planned Monday

The Geary County Transfer Station will be OPEN for business on Monday, the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Geary County Public Works said the tree and brush disposal site at the landfill will be closed that day. The landfill will resume normal business hours starting Tuesday, January 18.

All Geary County Offices, will be closed on Monday, January 17th in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. County clerk Rebecca Nordyke said regular hours will resume Tuesday, January 18th.
