JCPD will participate in a DUI traffic enforcement campaign

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - It’s been a little over a week since<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2021/12/14/kentucky-man-talks-moments-tornado-hit-community-relief-efforts/" target="_blank">&nbsp;tornadoes first swept through the state of Kentucky</a>, when hearing about all of the devastation, one couple in Kansas dropped everything to go help.

“There was a gentleman and we pulled over and we asked him ‘hey are you okay, do you need help” and he was like ‘no we’re good, thank you’ and then he asked if we were from the area and we’re like ‘no we’re from Junction City Kansas and he goes ‘what are you doing here in our little town’ and we were like ‘we just came here to help.”

Just the night before, Eric and Jessica Jorgenson were watching the weather channel in their Junction City home when they saw footage that they will never forget.

“We went to the fairgrounds in Mayfield, Kentucky because that is where all of the humanitarian stuff was going on like getting food out to people that need it, said Jessica. “We went out there and we were loading vehicles, just seeing the looks of devastation and defeat on people, it is something I am never going to forget.”

While many may find it hard to believe that they made the trip just to help strangers, they say it’s just a part of being human.

Geary County Commissioners have extended an emergency declaration for seven days that could allow the County to receive assistance from the state or other counties if necessary, in the recovery from the recent water crisis. Geary County Emergency Management Director Garry Berges cited an example. "For some reason the boil ( water ) order isn't lifted and we need to get some more water or something else in, we've got that already in place."

Berges noted that because an emergency declaration was in place last week during the water crisis about 100 pallets of bottled water were donated without any cost locally.

County Commission Chair applauds the water crisis response effort

The 1st Infantry Division’s Mobility Chief Warrant Officer 2 John Young was awarded the Reserve Warrant Officer of the Year 2020 for his achievements during a division wide National Training Center Rotation. He was presented this award on Dec. 10 at Fort Lee, Virginia.

Deploying at a brigade level is no easy task, but deploying at a division level comes with additional challenges and preparation. For the first time in 30 years the entire 1st Infantry Division deployed to the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin, California September 2020 for NTC rotation 20-10. This rotation also came during the height of COVID-19 restrictions.

“My role was to get everyone deployed to NTC and then redeployed. What made this rotation unique is usually when you do an NTC rotation it's just one brigade. This was a division level rotation including the brigades that supported the division as well as brigades from Fort Bragg, Fort Bliss, and elements from the National Guard and Reserve Units to support the division level rotation,” said CW2 John Young. “What made this extremely challenging is I had to synchronize each one of those movements into the NTC footprint. I had to synchronize all those movements into theater so there would be no congestion and we also ensured that we kept accountability of all personnel and equipment.”

“Chief Young has been the senior mobility tech in the division as a relatively junior officer during a time of very intensive deployments for the division. I think since he’s been here we deployed and redeployed almost the entire division and he has been absolutely instrumental,” said Lt. Col. Paul Licata, 1st Infantry Division Assistant Chief of Staff G4 Chief of Sustainment. “Without his efforts we wouldn't have been able to deploy and redeploy the division as successfully as we have over the last 18-24 months and he’s just been an outstanding member of the team.”

The U.S. Army Transportation Corps Reserve Warrant Officer of the Year award recognizes individuals who have served the Transportation Corps with distinction. The program maintains and enhances the legacy of the Transportation Corps and promotes cohesiveness and esprit de corps.

Opponents of a proposal to put a slaughterhouse on the southwest side of Junction City near I-70 expressed their concerns to Geary County Commissioners Monday.

Susan Kamm asked if the commission even had a say in the project. At this point nothing has come before the governing body but the commission chair Trish Giordano said, "I don't think they'll be able to do it without our assistance." As the 1st District representative on the commission Giordano added that she would do her job and listen to her constituents. "If anything I'm going to be affected just as much as you if anything happens. "Giordano lives on the west side of Junction City.

Opponent concerns have ranged from those dealing with odor to a decline of property values.&nbsp;

Chuck Munson pointed to the detrimental effect on the quality of life in&nbsp; the whole area within a three mile radius. "It's a major concern of many of us, most of us, if not all of us in the area. We'd just like to have a better idea of what is happening, what's going to happen before it happens rather than after."

Commissioner Alex Tyson also lives on the west side of&nbsp; the city. "If it smells that bad from that far I don't want something right down&nbsp; the street from me."

No action has been taken on this project by the governing body. The project is still in the due diligence staff of gathering and studying information.

Geary Community Hospital officials have announced that inpatient and outpatient services are now available. GH remains under a boil water advisory order, so there are a few minor limitations to capabilities.

Processes are being implemented to facilitate quality service to patients. Contact your primary car physician's office if you have questions about appointments.

The hospital had to transfer patients to other facilities last week due to the water crisis in Junction City, but they can now be treated at GCH.

&nbsp; Geary Community Hospital officials have announced that they are in the process of calling in staff to bring surgeries and OB procedures to include delivery of babies back on line as soon as possible. Once staff is in place, they will begin to accept patients for admission to the facility in the&nbsp; Medical/Surgical and ICU departments.

GCH leaders will coordinate directly with EMS to provide guidance on bringing&nbsp; additional patients to the Emergency Department. As stated in our noon update, clinics will open Tuesday&nbsp; morning at 8 a.m. This includes all Rural Health Clinics, Alpha Care, and the Wound Care Center. Lab and radiology services will also be available for normal appointments. Please be advised, that they will remain under a boil water advisory order until further notice, but the staff will provide the safest care possible under current conditions. Regular entrances to the facility will be staffed and open starting Tuesday morning.

Water pressure is slowly being restored which allows the facilities staff to deliberately reintegrate essential components for GCH to run safely.&nbsp;

Officials were able to announce the reopening of clinics, effective at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Rural Health clinics, Alpha Care and the Wound Care Center will be open for regular appointments. Lab and radiology services will also be available for normal appointments on Tuesday. However, the Emergency Department remains open at limited capacity pending the ability to admit patients. Patients requiring admission are assessed and stabilized before being transferred to another facility if necessary. Regular entrances to the facility will be staffed and open beginning Tuesday morning.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect after a violent altercation in Manhattan.

Just before 1:30p.m. Saturday, officers filed a report for aggravated battery and domestic battery in Manhattan, according to the the Riley County Police Department activity report.

An 18-year-old woman and 21-year-old woman reported two suspects were in an altercation with them. A 21-year-old female suspect hit the 18-year-old victim in the head with a toaster. 

Police arrested Lakesha Randolph, 21, of Manhattan on requested charges aggravated battery. She is being held on a bond of $5,000, according to the RCPD.

The Hyundai collided with a&nbsp;2011 Kia Sportage driven by Tessa Henry, 22, of Manhattan. 

EMS transported Henry to Via Christi for evaluation of shoulder and side pain, according to the RCPD. Celebi was issued a citation for failure to yield right of way at a stop sign.

Manhattan woman injured after 2-vehicle crash

&nbsp; Recently we all came together as Kansas Farm Bureau members at the 103rd&nbsp;annual meeting. This annual meeting was especially memorable because we could not be together in person last year. There is something special when farmers and ranchers from all parts of Kansas come together, and our time apart made it even better. Many old friendships were renewed, and new acquaintances were forged during the meeting. One of my favorite things is to watch the conversations in the hallway between sessions. Watching the handshakes, pats on the backs and warm greetings, in many cases with people you see once or twice a year. It was good to be among friends once again. The general session and workshops were incredible, but they were not the main event. The featured event came Monday morning when delegates from all across the state met to discuss and formulate the policy for Kansas’&nbsp;largest farm organization. Every proposal discussed came from the grassroots. That is what makes our organization so strong. Every member, no matter the type, size or location of their farm and ranch, can bring ideas forward, and that is why I am a proud member of Kansas Farm Bureau. Those policy proposals then go through our resolutions process before they become policy of Kansas Farm Bureau. The last step in that process is the approval by the majority of the voting delegates from each county in the state. Our policy book is the guidepost for advocacy efforts in both Topeka and Washington D.C., and it is the direct result of involvement at the county level. Each year I come away from this process with a great deal of satisfaction. Maybe not the satisfaction of always being on the winning side but the satisfaction of knowing that the policy in the book reflects work of members surfacing, debating and refining the issues and the subsequent policy before giving their ultimate approval to the language in the policy book. I am proud of the way we can debate difficult topics and yet come together after the votes are counted. I do not know if you have noticed but that is not always the case in our society. I genuinely believe our ability to debate topics we believe in and are passionate about and still be able to be unified is because of those relationships and friendships that are forged in the hallways and meeting rooms. My fervent hope is that this next year brings more normalcy, and we can carry on more meetings in person because I believe the relationships formed by those meetings are our strength. We are an ever-shrinking band of brothers and sisters, and our power is in our grassroots bonds. Just like the roots of our native prairie we are anchored by the very network of grassroots. Those intertwined roots give us strength when storms approach and gale winds blow. Just like the prairie, if we maintain those roots we will be around for a long, long time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary Community Hospital remains in a reduced services / capability status. Hospital officials said Sunday that means that GCH cannot accept routine appointments. However the emergency department will remain open for stabilization of urgent needs. Critical services in lab and radiology are available to support emergency cases. Once they are stabilized patients requiring admission will be transferred to another facility.&nbsp;

Coordination between the hospital and EMS is ongoing to facilitate quality care for patients while also balancing requirements to protect the city in case of another emergency. The only entrance to the hospital will be through the emergency room entrance.

Sunday leaders from the city, emergency Operations Center, GCH medical staff, city and county representatives, plus hospital administrative and maintenance staff met to discuss expectations for bringing GCH to full capability. While the hospital staff is working to reintegrate utility systems, the decision was made for clinics to include Alpha Care and the Wound Care Center to remain closed on Monday. All surgical procedures are also postponed. However, the rural health clinics will be minimally staffed to receive telephone calls for emergency prescription refills and to reschedule appointments.&nbsp;

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) -Forty-four Junction City area kids are having a merrier Christmas this year, thanks to local law enforcement agencies.

Since 2004, the Junction City Police Department has partnered with area law enforcement agencies to provide a ‘Shop with a Cop’ experience for kids from Geary County.

“It’s a great program. I love being able to provide this service for our community. I grew up here so it’s good to get back. That’s what I’ve always wanted to do.” Junction City Police Department, Detective Amanda Mancuso says.

Kids and Officers feasted on pancakes provided by volunteers with the Second Missionary Baptist Church before going shopping.

(WIBW) -Forty-four Junction City area kids are having a merrier Christmas this year, thanks to local law enforcement agencies.Since 2004, the Junction City Police Department has partnered with area law enforcement agencies to provide a ‘Shop with a Cop’ experience for kids from Geary County.“It’s a great program. I love being able to provide this service for our community. I grew up here so it’s good to get back. That’s why we’re partnering with KDA and KLA to get information and relief to farmers and ranchers as fast as possible.” The KDA&nbsp;<a href="https://kfb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=45bba928f411d21617c5eadbe&amp;id=a01013ca2e&amp;e=32b5639f2e" target="_blank">resource page</a>&nbsp;is the best source for those wishing to help with hay and other supplies. Dubbed the Four County Fire, the wind not only fueled the blaze, it hampered firefighters from finding it initially. “Hell would be the best way to describe it,” says Russell County Fire Chief Dustin Finkenbinder. “The dust was so bad we couldn’t see the fire. All we could do was rely on smell.” Finkenbinder says the fire had burned about two miles by the time crews arrived on site before eventually growing 10 to 12 miles wide. More than 24 hours after the initial call, he was still monitoring smoldering bale piles and other hot spots for embers that could ignite new fires. State and local officials are still determining the impacts of these fires, though early reports suggest homes, outbuildings and livestock were lost in the flames. Agricultural organizations collaborate to provide fire and storm relief

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Kansas State fans can gear up for the TaxAct Texas Bowl with the Wildcats’ annual bowl&nbsp;pep&nbsp;rally&nbsp;on Monday, January 3 at Miller Outdoor Theatre in downtown Houston.

The program will begin at 3 p.m. University President&nbsp;Richard Myers&nbsp;and incoming president&nbsp;Richard Linton&nbsp;will speak, and head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman&nbsp;and select players will address the crowd. The Pride of Wildcat Land, Classy Cats, cheerleaders and Willie Wildcat will also get fans ready for the game the next night against LSU. Those in attendance can also receive a free K-State commemorative TaxAct Texas Bowl button and poster while supplies last.

Miller Outdoor Theatre, located in Hermann Park (6000 Hermann Park Drive), is centrally located in downtown Houston and features several nearby family attractions, including the Houston Zoo, Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Children’s Museum.

The K-State bowl&nbsp;pep&nbsp;rally&nbsp;is sponsored by K-State Athletics, the K-State Alumni Association, KSU Foundation and Office of the President.

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.6 percent in November. This was a decrease from 3.9 percent in October and a decrease from 4.7 percent in November 2020.

“In November, the Kansas labor market saw the unemployment rate decline to 3.6 percent. Nonfarm job estimates increased by 2,700 jobs over the month,” said Secretary Amber Shultz. “The labor force participation rate did decrease in November, but is still at pre-pandemic levels.”

The unemployment rate fell a full percent in Geary County to 3.5 percent in November. Riley County jobless numbers fell from 2.9 percent in October to 2.2 in November. Pottawatomie and Wabaunsee County also saw a significant drop and both reported a rate of 2&nbsp; percent in November.&nbsp;

Seasonally adjusted job estimates indicate total Kansas nonfarm jobs increased by 2,700 from October. Private sector jobs, a subset of total nonfarm jobs, increased by 2,400 from the previous month, while government increased by 300.

“The largest over-the-month job gains in November were in trade, transportation, and utilities, as well as leisure and hospitality,” said Labor Economist Emilie Doerksen. “Both of these industries experienced significant declines early in the pandemic, but have seen a steady recovery since April 2020. Trade, transportation, and utilities have seen relatively strong growth and is now 3.3 percent above pre-pandemic levels.”

Since November 2020, Kansas seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 35,400. This change is due to an increase of 33,000 private sector jobs and 2,400 government jobs.

MANHATTAN —A Kansas woman was injured in an accident just after 8a.m. Thursday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Tristan Neff, 22, of Manhattan rear-ended a 2021 Dodge Caliber driven by Peggy Avilez, 59, of Valley Center while she was stopped at a traffic light at the intersection of S. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. and Fort Riley Blvd. in Manhattan.

EMS transported Avilez to Via Christi for treatment of neck and back pain. Neff was issued a citation for inattentive driving.

Geary USD 475 cancelled school last Friday due to water supply issue

Hospital spokesperson Ashley King has confirmed that four patients were diverted to area hospitals, either Via Christi in Manhattan or Salina Regional Health Center.

Due to Junction City - wide water issues, Geary Community Hospital officials have announced that they are currently diverting patients to nearby facilities. Efforts are being coordinated with EMS for safe and immediate transport to facilitate quality care for any patients impacted by this situation.

According to a release from the hospital the emergency department will remain open for stabilization of urgent needs and critical support services in lab and radiology will be available. Once stabilized, any patients requiring admission will be transferred to another facility.&nbsp;

GCH clinics including Alpha Care and the Wound Care Center will remain closed Friday. All surgical procedures are postponed and will be rescheduled. All other patients will be notified of rescheduled appointments. The only entrance to the facility will be through the emergency room entrance.

Hospital officials will provide updates on the status of service as they receive information from the city and county.

The city's water problem follows the high wind issues that occurred on Wednesday and resulted in overnight flooding in the basement of the Junction City Water Plant. Much of&nbsp; the water was pumped out on Thursday and work was under way to try and restore full water service to the community.

Army officials at Fort Riley issued a statement via social media concerning water supply Thursday afternoon.

"Because Fort Riley has its own water treatment and storage capabilities, the post is not impacted by a water supply issue in neighboring Junction City. "

Geary County Public Works Landfill at East Street (South on Interstate – 70) will be open to the public on Saturday, December 18, for the disposal of brush and trees. It is free for Geary County residents. 

The site will also be open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. All fees are waived for the Commercial customer until, December 22.

This move by the county follows the wind storm on Wednesday that left downed tree limbs and branches in the community.

Junction City and Grandview Plaza residents are being asked to conserve water as the Junction City Water Plant had sustained damage and is currently being worked on to restore services.

Grandview Plaza has received authorization from the State of Kansas to setup a temporary burn site off Witt Rd. for downed trees and limbs.

For Geary County Residents who are still without power there are three locations currently accepting residents for shelter.&nbsp; Please check the following list for location and operating hours:
