Junction City firefighters responded early Friday morning to 124 W. 3rd for a structure fire. Fire Chief Jason Lankas said upon arrival they encountered two story triplex apartment with fire and smoke showing on one side of the structure.&nbsp; Apts. 1 and 2 were empty and Apt. 3 occupied by one resident. An all clear was announced. 

Red cross was notified for the occupant of Apt.1. Fire damage was contained to exterior wall on east side of that apartment. The cause of the fire was unintentional, improper use of smoking materials. No injuries were reported, and overall estimated damages were calculated at $5,500.

Fort Riley has been named a 2021 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. This marks the 35th consecutive year Fort Riley has earned Tree City USA status.

In recognition of Arbor Day, Fort Riley planted a redbud tree near the Main Post Chapel located in Historic Main Post.

According to Public Affairs officials, Fort Riley achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program's four requirements: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Trees provide multiple benefits to a community when properly planted and maintained. They improve a neighborhood’s visual appeal, increase property values, reduce home cooling costs, remove air pollutants and provide a habitat for wildlife, among many other benefits.

Just after 9:11 p.m. Thursday, Opportunities Unlimited reported two 14-year-old boys damaged a garage door and a window. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $675.

Junction City April employment anniversaries are recognized

SALINA —Wednesday was a big day for Great Plains Manufacturing in Salina.

Not only did Great Plains host Kansas State University President Richard H. Linton and Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus CEO and Dean Alysia Starkey at its new construction equipment (CE) facility in south Salina, but it also announced that it recently received approval for the second phase of the Salina CE facility expansion.

"The visit was part of a growing collaboration between Great Plains Manufacturing and Kansas State University to expand corporate-student partnerships through networking, research, and employment opportunities," Great Plains noted in a news release.

David Disberger, Great Plains Manufacturing executive vice president and K-State Salina Dean’s Advisory Council member, said, “With the expansion of our CE facility and the growth surrounding manufacturing, we’re working to develop a longterm vision and strengthen ties with our local universities. This new facility opens up more opportunities for students and their future career paths, and we’re excited to explore opportunities for collaboration.”

Moving forward with the CE facility

Great Plains noted that Step I of the CE project is "well underway, operating on time, and under budget." So far, more than 115 employees have been hired, and the company has plans to hire more than 30 additional positions before the end of 2022.

Mass production of the Kubota SVL65 compact track loaders is scheduled to begin in September, according to information from Great Plains.

The company announced Wednesday that Step II of its CE facility expansion will be "a $124 million investment that will include the installation of an automotive-grade eco-paint system with two paint lines, one for powder and the other for liquid applications. Expanded welding, assembly, and fabrication areas, and the construction of a building addition will increase production capacity and bring more jobs to the Salina community."

The company expects Step II to be implemented and running by mid-2024 and to add approximately 200 additional jobs to the area.

“Step II is next in a three-phase strategic plan to be completed in the coming years, adding production capacity and new jobs to our Salina community. This expansion continues to show the confidence that Kubota and Great Plains have in our ability to manufacture high-quality power units for the North America Construction Equipment market,” Chris Montgomery, Great Plains manager of CE operations, said.

Great Plains provides tour to K-State officials, announces expansion

Two Junction City area&nbsp; veterans, Philip Pauly, Staff Sgt. Ret. and Richard Young, Command Sgt. Major were the recipients of Quilts of Valor in ceremonies on Thursday.

Pauly received his quilt in Heritage Park.

Pauly served in the Army and spent time in Vietnam with the 121 Signal Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division where his job was to move supplies from Okinawa to his unit in Vietnam. He retired in 1986. The quilt was a special honor. "Means the world to me, that anybody would think of me after, 30 years, 40 years out of the service."

In addition to the Quilt of Valor, Pauly also received a Kansas Vietnam Veteran Medallion from Bill Turner, Director of the Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs.&nbsp;

Earlier, at the Military Affairs Council breakfast at the Milford Lake Conference Center at Acorn's Resort, Command Sgt. Maj. Ret. Richard Young, received a Quilt of Valor.&nbsp;

The thought behind the Quilt is something that Young enjoyed. "The people that created it wanting to remember the veterans. "Young served in the Army from 1970 to 2001. He is a veteran of Desert Storm where he was a Command Sgt. Major with the 82nd Field Artillery in the Third Armored Division.

According to Donna Martinson, Quilt of Valor Program Coordinator, 425 quilts have been presented to local area veterans in this program.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by Adam N. Lee, 30, Manhattan, was eastbound on Kansas 18 just west of 56th Avenue.

The passenger side mirror of the pickup struck a pedestrian identified as Curtis D. New, 32, Topeka, who was in the middle of the outside lane of traffic.

EMS transported New to Via Christi in Manhattan. Lee was not injured and not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

There will be an American Red Cross blood drive at the Vertical Church, Monday, May 2nd. This is an express drive, so it will be one donor every 15 minutes. According to the Red Cross the donors will usually be in and out in about 30 to 40 minutes.

The location of the blood drive is at 339 W. 18th Street in Junction City. Hours will be from noon to six p.m.

There will be a $10 electronic gift card for everyone who donates.

Valley View issues thank you for Easter Egg Hunt support

The Junction City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 0729 a.m. Wednesday at 948 Grant Ave. No. 174. On arrival firefighters found a mobile home was on fire with a 10x10 shed 1 foot away from the trailer also on fire. There was a total loss for both structures. 

Fire Marshal Dave Nelson stated that this fire is under investigation. There were not any injuries related to this fire. There was one person who resided at the location but he declined Red Cross assistance.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Chevy Silverado driven by Winston D. Griffin, 32, Junction City was westbound on U.S. 400 two miles west of the U.S. 169 Junction.

The pickup was following a 2019 Honda Ridgeline driven by Gaby Reck, 51, Coffeyville.&nbsp; The driver of the Honda signaled for a right turn and the Chevy attempted to pass on the left.&nbsp; The Honda made a left hand turn instead and collided with the Chevy.

EMS transported Reck to the hospital in Independence. Griffin was not injured.&nbsp; Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Veterans traveled this week from Wamego to Washington D.C. to view the war memorials. Each veteran was accompanied by a student guardian from the Wamego High School National Honor Society.

Honor Flight returns to Wamego Thursday evening

Susan Moyer, Director of the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library, was presented with a check for $200.00 by the JC Breakfast Optimist Club on Wednesday to be used for the library’s Summer Reading Program.  The program is designed for Pre-K through adults.  The theme this year is “Oceans of Possibilities”. 

 In addition to encouraging children to read during the summer to maintain or improve their reading skills, there will be science, technology, engineering, and math skills activities presented to those who enroll.&nbsp;

Interim CEO Margaret Grismer, said&nbsp; BKD margin assessment short-term goals are being implemented. "Those implementation processes have proven successful for us in small changes and increased revenue." Cash is coming in quicker and approximately $2.7 million has been collected.

There has been an increase in outpatient diagnostic visits, with the rural health clinic visits the highest all year.&nbsp;

On the salaries and wages side of the ledger, they were up about $196,000 compared to a year ago. Contract labor, Community Health Corporation salaries, and cardio pulmonary are the areas that were cited.&nbsp;

Evergy Warns Customers Regarding Recent Utility Scam Attempts

JC First has presented a check for $6,000 to Brad and Shawn Chauncey, builders of three spec houses, in the Manns Ranch Addition in Junction City.&nbsp;

The JC First Spec House Development Program encourages building of spec houses, with JC First funding up to $2,000 per house.&nbsp;

All three of the spec houses have been sold.&nbsp; The check was presented Wednesday at the Junction City Area Chamber of Commerce offices.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the theft of dumpsters.

Just after 2p.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for theft in the 1200 block of Temple Lane in Manhattan.

A1 Trash Service reported 20 dumpsters were stolen, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $97,000. 

Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

From November through February there has been low precipitation, but March was more normal. However, it is dry because of global warming trends. If people want a green lawn, water less, but water deeply and mow tall.”

Chuck also stated that “the December 15 windstorm did damage to evergreens and caused woody plants to have cracks. The weekend of Mother’s Day is the best time to plant tomatoes. Right now the ground is still too cold. This is a good time to prune rose bushes and Rose of Sharon, but not lilacs. Junipers and evergreens may be pruned as we approach Fall.”

Chuck will be retiring in September after approximately 40 years of service. “You just know when it is time and now is the time”, he said

On Tuesday, six students from the JAG Karns Building with 7th and 8th grade students assisted six adults in planting vegetables in raised beds at the 12th&nbsp;Street Community Garden. The adults reside at the Bicentennial Manor, Bartell, and in the local community. &nbsp;

The mission of the pilot project is to connect generations through gardening and social interaction. Vegetable plants grown at the Westwood School Greenhouse were donated by Live Well Geary County. In addition, vegetable plant donations &amp; tool racks were donated by Waters/True Value. &nbsp;Witt Services gave a discount on plants, and a discount for services rendered was received from Johnson Landscaping, and volunteer Dennis Bobbitt.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Community Garden pilot project begins 

Firefighters from four departments responded to northern Riley County Tuesday for a grass wildfire in the Bjorling Road area north of Randolph. According to information from Riley County Fire District One they cleared the scene about 11 p.m. but plan to return this morning to check for hot spots. As of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday an estimated 180 acres had burned.

There were not any reports of injuries or structure damage.

Manhattan, Blue Rapids and Waterville Fire Departments provided assistance in battling the blaze along with Riley County Fire District One.
