Junction City vs Manhattan Basketball

MANHATTAN, KAN —Law enforcement authorities investigating a shooting in Manhattan early Sunday&nbsp;at Tate’s Bar in Aggieville  arrested Joshua Cummings, 20, of Ft. Riley without incident just before 4p.m. Tuesday, according to RCPD spokesperson Aaron Wintermote.

Cummings was arrested with assistance from Ft. Riley officials, on requested charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery.

He is currently being held in the Riley County Jail in lieu of bond, pending his first appearance in court.

Just before 2a.m. Sunday RCPD officers heard and responded to the reports of gun shots inside Tate’s Bar,&nbsp; 1109 Moro, in the Aggieville Business District, according to a media release from police.

Officers arrived on scene immediately after the shots were fired and found a 24-year-old male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and a second 24-year-old male suffering from a minor head injury (concussion). Both victims were transported to Via Christi for treatment of their injuries. The victim suffering from the gunshot wound was later life flighted to Stormont Vail for further treatment.

GEARY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a case of alleged animal cruelty and seeking the public’s help locating the person or persons involved in the gruesome act.

The Geary County Sheriff's office is investigating&nbsp;two&nbsp;deceased dogs that were found with gunshot wounds around Burley Hill, approximately eight mile east of Junction City, according to a social media report from the Junction City animal shelter.

 The animals,&nbsp;a black and tan shepherd mix and a chocolate lab,&nbsp;were found one week apart from each other&nbsp;in late November and early December.

Anyone with&nbsp;information&nbsp;is asked to&nbsp;contact&nbsp;the Junction City Animal Shelter&nbsp;at 785-238-1359 or the Geary County Sheriff’s Office 785-238-2261.&nbsp;

Rural Firefighter Appreciation Supper is held

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After being out of the pool for almost a year due to COVID-19, Fort Riley Middle School student and swimmer Kenley Teller is making a comeback as she heads to the 2021 U.S. Paralympics Swimming National Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, next week.

Kenley, who was born with popliteal pterygium syndrome, first participated in the national championship two years ago, making history as the youngest swimmer to compete in the competition. She will still hold this title as she heads to this year’s championship, which is the first major U.S. Paralympics Swimming competition post-Tokyo, according to the Greensboro Aquatic Center’s website.

“The fact that she’s pushed herself and given herself this opportunity is just amazing,” said Mary Teller, Kenley’s mother. “We couldn’t be prouder of her, and we’re just ready to go cheer her on and have a good weekend together.”

For the past five years, Kenley’s favorite part of swimming has not been the shiny gold medals or plaques she’s won, it’s looking at her time after she finishes and seeing that she made a new personal record. This mindset is something she will carry with her when competing next week.

“Don’t be scared that everybody’s older than you, because it’s not about beating them,” Kenley said. “It’s about improving your own time.”

The competition will take place from December 17 to 19, and upon returning from the competition, Kenley has one goal in mind.

“Keep on pushing forward to keep improving.”

High winds, possible thunderstorm activity Wednesday

Sometimes dreams can come true. A contingent of local residents working on a proposed sports complex project certainly hope so, as they unveiled their plans for Geary County Commissioners at the County Office Building on Monday.&nbsp;

The complex would be located at Milford State Park and would be operated by an outside company with a 25-year lease from Kansas Wildlife and Parks. Architect Brett Deam has developed concepts for the facility. "Within this project would be multipurpose fields, baseball, softball, basketball, tennis, you name it.&nbsp; The project would also include an amphitheater and there would be an arena seating 3,000 to 5,000 people that could be used for everything from basketball, wrestling and volleyball to concerts. The arena would allow the sports complex to be used year around.

Committee members that spoke to the county commission included Bret Deam, Adam Wilkey and Brad Roether, with other members of their group in attendance. Approximately 45 acres on the south side of Milford State Park is the target location for the complex. Wilkey said that they have a concept, a location and feasibility for the project. They will have to look at dollars and cents. "We're pleased with what we heard from the county commission today so we're excited." 

Commissioners did not take any final action but were positive in their reaction to the proposal which could possibly include a facility with strictly a rough guess at this point that could go into the $25-$30 million range.&nbsp; County Chair Trish Giordano said she wants to see the numbers including a business plan before she commits to the project. Commissioners Keith Ascher and Alex Tyson made strong positive comments about the concepts outlined.

Under the plan that was outlined a company that manages sports facilities, Sports Facilities Advisory,&nbsp; could possibly be hired to run this facility's day to day operation.&nbsp; Wilkey said&nbsp; for a next step he will reach out to contacts with the company to get them engaged and pull information from their files and learn their ideas. Sports Facilities Advisory worked with the CVB several years ago on a feasibility study for a sports complex but nothing ever went beyond that point. They currently manage 28 facilities that they have built in the last 15 years.

Under the new proposal the State Park could receive an annual 2.8 % revenue payment. "We just know that's what the revenue of the State Park brings in general. Their revenue is 2.8% of any kind of gross proceeds, " said Wilkey, who noted that the County gave the planners the green light to keep pursuing the project. "We're not committing any money at this point, we're not signing any leases, we're just moving forward with the project in a positive way." One area where local funding could be utilized is the one-percent transient guest revenues that have been set aside for a sports complex. That money comes from users of hotel and motel lodging facilities. There are not any plans to use property tax revenue.

Wilkey indicated State Park officials at Milford Lake are excited.&nbsp; But formal approval would have to be obtained. Before that could occur the project would need approval from the Geary County Commission to show their support.&nbsp;

There was also the future possibility of&nbsp; future business development near the sports complex, and planners believe the facility could bring visitors and additional money into the county. Grants and donations could also be sought to help build the facility.&nbsp;

"We're wrapping everything up. Of course there will be some finishing touches that will continue throughout the rest of the year. " Eggleston said officials are excited about all of the academic opportunities that will occur in the building.

"I have to commend the principal, the administrators and the teachers and staff for just making the adjustments as we started a new year." The school year did begin a couple of weeks late because of construction difficulties. "But they have done a fantastic job making the adjustments."

Enrollment rose approximately 200 students at JCHS at the beginning of the school year to near the 1,600 student level.&nbsp;

Fort Riley’s Parker Gate reopened December 13 and construction in vicinity of Grant Gate starts January 10. That information was contained in a release from the Fort Riley Garrison Public Affairs Office

Parker Access Control Point off Old Highway 77 on the west side of Fort Riley reopened to traffic today, following a construction project that began in September.

Parker gate will be open Monday through Friday, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. It will be closed on weekends, federal holidays and 1st Infantry Division training holidays.

A road repair project at the junction of Huebner, Custer and McCormick Roads beginning in January will change traffic patterns through the Grant access control point and increase travel times during construction. That project is scheduled to start Jan. 10 and will continue through May.

Howies Recycling Trash Service, the City of Manhattan, Evergy, Fortress, Inc., Centruri Group, Inc., and a 49-year-old man reported unknown suspects damaged and vandalized multiple construction sites and buildings.

 The estimated total loss associated with these cases is $16,200. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

On occasion, however, a person’s accomplishments are so impartially good and decent that society’s instincts and emotions combine into tautological proof. They are mountains in their own right. Bob Dole was a mountain of a man, and his contribution to Kansas and America are immense and immeasurable. After more than a week of reflection and mourning the loss of such a man, it’s quite possible if any metric did exist to quantify the admiration and devotion he inspired, Dole would set records. There are so many inflection points from which to choose to begin measuring. His birth in Russell; the Dust Bowl years of his youth; war wounds suffered on an Italian mountain. You can’t pick just one, they’re all part of the fabric that made up who Dole became. If pressed, however, I’d consider the barrage of enemy fire to be the most consequential for Kansas and the nation. Dole was studying to become a doctor when he enlisted and went off to war. The bullets that tore into his body didn’t just take his right arm, it likely robbed central Kansas of one of its finest physicians. Dole’s arduous three-year recovery also likely factored into his willingness to accept incremental progress, knowing that small changes add up over the course of time. This also meant largely avoiding the legislative spotlight, for as one of his many obituaries mentions, Dole’s record has “no signature bill.” Instead, he was content to leave fingerprints on decades of budget, tax and foreign policy discussions. Though I knew some of the broad strokes about most of the events mentioned above prior to his death earlier this month, I never knew just how much support he garnered outside of Kansas. I was a freshman in high school when his political career ended just short of the presidency. I knew him better as a pharmaceutical pitchman than a legislative powerbroker, though it was the latter that eventually made the biggest impression on me. I met Dole exactly once, during his “farewell” tour in 2014. He wasn’t running for anything, and he didn’t have anything to offer other than some conversation and his wit. Yet is presence alone was enough to draw a crowd on a sunny weekday afternoon in May. Some came just to say hello. For some, it was a chance to say goodbye. Still others just wanted to be in the presence of greatness again. Every one of us was better for the experience, even if we couldn’t quantify that at the time.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; Despite all the available metrics available for us to make sense of our world, measuring it is still largely defined by the parameters set forth by humans. Everyone knows Mount Everest is the tallest mountain at just over 29,000 feet above mean sea level. Calculating the distance from base to peak gives the edge to Hawaii’s Mauna Kea at 33,484 feet, with just less than 14,000 of those above sea level. If you move the starting point to Earth’s center and look for the highest point closest to the stars, you’ll land on the top of Ecuador’s Mount Chimborazo because of its proximity to the equator where the Earth’s rotation makes the crust thicker. Measuring the physical attributes around us is tricky enough given the ability to produce vastly different outcomes based on where an observer chooses to begin. Taking Measure

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 1:30p.m. Sunday in Manhattan.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a dirtbike driven by 24-year-old Konrad Stein of Michigan struck a&nbsp;2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by Samantha King, 30, of Manhattan as she was turning at the intersection of E. Marlatt Avenue and Casement Road in Manhattan.

EMS transported Stein to Via Christi for treatment of serious lacerations and later life-flighted to Stormont Vail for further treatment, according to the RCPD.&nbsp;

Man airlifted to hospital after dirt bike, car crash in Manhattan

St. Francis Xavier School crowned their 2021 homecoming royalty during half time of the high school boys’ basketball game on December 9th. Sophomore, Heston Jahnke, was voted king and senior, Lauryn Peterson was crowned queen.

St. Xavier hosted Flint Hill Christian School, competing in middle school and high school basketball games. In the high school boys game Saint Xavier defeated Flint Hills 50-49 with Landon Berry scoring 22 points and Heston Jahnke 14 points. In the high school girls game Saint Xavier was a 41-15 winner with Grace Lichtensteiger scoring 24 points.&nbsp;

In the middle school girls game Flint Hills defeated Saint Xavier 24-22 with Kassidy Jahnke scoring 16 for Saint X, and in the middle school boys contest Saint Xavier defeated Flint Hills 36-26. Charles Quinton had 18 points for Saint Xavier.

Geary Community Hospital and the financial problems faced by that entity drew attention during a joint Geary County Commission - legislative delegation meeting this past week.

Trish Giordano, Commission Chair, noted that the community needs to come together and figure out the options,"and then maybe go to the state and ask for some help. I'm not sure what they can do but we definitely need to work on this and it needs to be a priority."&nbsp;

County officials learned recently that $28 million in maintenance work will be needed at the hospital within the next four years, including $12 million in the next year.

Commissioners learned during the meeting with legislators that the state does have some COVID-19 money remaining, but whether it could be used for the hospital is not known. That may not be possible. Officials are also looking at grant possibilities and possible partnerships.

Giordano feels town hall meetings on the hospital's financial challenges should be held.

&nbsp;Just before 2a.m. Sunday RCPD officers heard and responded to the reports of gun shots inside Tate’s Bar,&nbsp; 1109 Moro, in the Aggieville Business District, according to a media release from police.

Specifically, any pictures or videos inside or around Tate's leading up to, during, or immediately after the shooting, according to social media request from the RCPD.

Update: KSU offers support for students affected by Aggieville shooting

State Sen. Jeff Longbine reported to Geary County Commissioners this past week that the next round of state redistricting will consume every minute of the upcoming legislative session. Longbine said he was within one percent of the current population in his 17th Senate district, but one Senate district will have to placed in the Kansas City area and that affects everyone else.

Longbine also noted that Sen. Tom Hawk needs to lose about 11,000 people in his 22nd district, and it's unknown who will pick up representation for Milford and areas in the north part of the county. He mentioned that Sen. Elaine Bowers ( Sen. District 36 ) of Concordia&nbsp; could be a likely possibility.&nbsp;

No final action has occurred. The Kansas legislative session begins in January.

The Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel (JCARSP) met on December 10 in the Zion United Church of Christ Fellowship Room.

Guest speakers were La Donna Junghans and Duane Blythe with the Aging Well Project and Amber Cook, Principal at the USD 475 Early Childhood Center. JCARSP members donated money or underwear and/or shoes for 3, 4 or 5 old children at the Early Childhood Center.

JCARSP members who were present and who have done volunteer time in our community between October 8 and December 10 logged 1,675 hours. Members volunteer in schools, at church, serve on boards and committees, provide support at sporting and concert events and many other activities to continue their service to others.

The next meeting of the organization will be on March 11. Donations will be made to support Wheels of Hope.&nbsp;
