FORT RILEY, Kan. (WIBW) - The 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley has recognized another Big Red One Medal of Honor recipient, as part of the Big Red One Year of Honor.

Soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division honored Private James W Reese on Wednesday, for his bravery and perseverance while serving during World War II, by renaming a street on the installation in his honor...

Private Reese ordered members of his squad to withdrawal and find safety, while he continued to stay in an exposed position, taking on heavy gunfire.

Private Reese was killed in action, but his bravery and determination regardless of the consequences, continue to be an inspiration to the US armed forces.

TOPEKA—The&nbsp;<a href="https://kansascourts.org/l/tWtBNqynmqYRGT01bwhBO0yuJHJ05JROxeZdtAWFOSg" target="_blank">8th Judicial District Nominating Commission</a>&nbsp;has sent the names of nominees for two district judge vacancies to Gov. Laura Kelly, who has 60 days to decide who will fill the vacancies.

The 8th Judicial District is composed of Dickinson, Geary, Marion and Morris counties.

Downtown Junction City businesses have partnered with the library to help with this fun program by putting up pages of the story in their windows for patrons to read.

This month’s story is If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff. This month’s StoryWalk® JC begins and ends at the Dorothy Bramlage Public Library once again.

 While at the library, families can stop in and pick up an If You Take a Mouse to School activity sheet to do along the way. Library announces next StoryWalk

The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging (NC-FH AAA) invites older Kansans and caregivers to the Answers for Older Kansans (AOK) Sunflower Connections events. 

The first event that highlights practical information and includes fun for seniors and caregivers is slated for Sept. 1 at the Marion Community Center, 203 N. Third Street in Marion. A second event is planned for Sept. 30 in Wamego in conjunction with the community’s Senior Resource Fair.

“COVID-19 has popped our plans for our popular annual Sunflower Fair—so these two events are ways for people in this part of Kansas to get trustworthy and practical information on topics important to anyone who is going to celebrate more birthdays,” said Julie Govert Walter, executive director of the NC-FH AAA. 

She added that experts will cover “How to Make your Money Last as Long as You Do,” “Positive Aging” and “Talking With Your Doctor: Being Your Best Health Care Advocate.”

Walter said that each event features expert speakers, prizes, entertainment and lunch. For the safety of participants, each event is limited to 50 people.

Registration costs $10 per person and includes a catered lunch.

Answers for Older Kansans at Sunflower Connections events

RILEY COUNTY—A Kansas man was injured in an accident just before 6p.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2019 Harley Davidson&nbsp; driven by Joshua C. Campbell, 43, Manhattan, was eastbound in the left lane of Kansas 18 five miles north of Interstate 70 at a high rate of speed. 

The driver could not negotiate the curve. The motorcycle entered the median, rolled several times and ejected the driver.

EMS transported Campbell to Stormont Vail. He was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

Manhattan man hospitalized after motorcycle rolls

Nellie Smith, 100, Junction City, died at her home Wednesday afternoon. A longtime supporter of youth in the community and in particular 4-H, she spent her entire life in Geary County.

Londeen-Overlease&nbsp; Funeral Chapel in Chapman will be handling arrangements. 

JC Post talked with Geary County Extension Agent Chuck Otte about Nellie's passing. "She went downhill fast after the county fair this year. " Smith had attended the fair in July as she did every year.

"Nellie did know everybody and if she didn't know them they knew her. She was always a presence in the community," said Otte. "She loved the community, she loved the 4-H kids, and just the kids in schools. She was an amazing lady."

Smith was a benefactor for many, explained Otte. "We established the Geary County 4-H Foundation Memorial Scholarship for her and Raymond ( her late husband ). " That included two $1,000 scholarships per year for 4-H kids, and she helped many other youth.

Otte noted that the legacy of Nellie and Raymond Smith will live forever. "They cared about the community, they cared about youth, whether they were 4-H youth, Saint X youth, whether they were Junction City High youth. They didn't care. They just loved kids that were doing the right thing."

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club met at 6:50 AM on August 18 at the Hampton Inn Meeting Room.

Chuck Otte, Ag and Natural Resources Extension Agent, was the guest speaker.

Chuck began with a summary of the Geary County Free Fair stating that “Last year was abbreviated because of COVID. There was no public viewing as livestock came in, the showing was live streamed on Facebook Live and then the livestock was taken home. This year was more ‘normal’. Exhibits, attendance, and participation was down, however. Livestock was shown with an audience and live streamed. We are not quite ‘normal’ but are getting there.”

Mr. Otte also told Optimist members that “the hot topic this time of year includes Army Worms. They are a caterpillar about one and a half inches long and eat most anything. They especially like alfalfa and sorghum. The worms eat some of the green and move on to the next. The Army Worms are also active in the grass in our lawns. The Worms arrive in July and may last for four generations. Predators are birds.” The treatment Chuck recommends is called Spinosad.

An Optimist member asked Chuck about the Blue-green algae conditions at Milford Lake. Otte answered that “It is not an algae, but a sign of bacteria, clear water and high temperatures.” Blue-green algae are microscopic organisms that are naturally present in lakes and streams. Under certain conditions, blue-green algae can become abundant in warm, shallow, undisturbed, nutrient-rich surface waters that receive a lot of sunlight. When this occurs, blue-green algae can form blooms that discolor the water or produce floating mats or scums on the water’s surface. Chuck also said “The resolution will take a long time. It is necessary to first get the nutrients out of the water. Climate change also makes it worse.”

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club meets every Wednesday at the Hampton Inn in Junction City. Those who attend for the first time will be the club’s guest for the breakfast buffet. Breakfast is served at 6:30 AM and the meetings begin at 6:50 AM.

Last Thursday, the 25-bed hospital in Abilene sent a patient 570 miles away by air ambulance to Wisconsin.

Like many rural hospitals, Memorial Health System does a bit of everything. But it doesn’t have an intensive care unit.

In a pre-pandemic world, anyone needing critical care got transferred to Salina Regional Health Center, 30 miles away. Occasionally, a patient might get sent to Topeka or Wichita.

The Kansas News Service talked with Abilene physician Megan Brown about how she finally found an ICU bed for her gravely ill patient last week. Her interview has been edited for length and clarity.

We had a patient who did happen to be a COVID patient. …&nbsp; But, I mean, it would have been the same really probably for any patient needing an ICU.

His condition was getting worse to the point where we weren’t able to continue taking care of him here. He really needed to be on a ventilator — which typically we don’t keep ventilated patients here, because those patients should be in an ICU.

Talking with him and his family … we gave them the option of keeping him here and keeping him comfortable, knowing that he may or may not survive. Versus, transferring him out to a bigger hospital.

So, the KDHE (Kansas Department of Health and Environment) has set up what they’re calling mission control — where you can call and they’ll help make those phone calls (to other hospitals) to find a bed for the patient.

So I called them and they said, “Well, I have four patients needing an ICU bed in front of you. We’ve already called (hospitals across) Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. And there are no beds available.”

They said, “The last patient we were able to place was in Des Moines, Iowa. We think maybe there’s some beds available in Minneapolis. Do you want us to add you to the list?”

And I said, “Well, yes.” But knowing that there were four patients ahead of us, we ended up making phone calls as well.

So I had to cancel an entire afternoon of clinic (hours) and spent three-and-a-half hours on the phone calling hospitals further and further away, trying to find a bed for this patient.

I had a medical student that was helping me, and she’d called South Dakota. And they said, “We’re getting calls from as far away as Louisiana.”

So at that point, we said, “You know, everyone else who’s looking for a hospital is calling the biggest cities in the states.” And so we kind of thought we needed to shift our focus and try to call some smaller hospitals.

And we were already kind of calling around in Wisconsin. And I had gone to college as an undergrad in Appleton, Wisconsin, and I knew they had some ICU beds. Whether they were available or not, I didn’t know.

So I called them. And they finally were like, “We don’t have any beds — but have you called this hospital in Oshkosh?” And (they) gave me the number.

And then we finally found a bed there.

But that took three-and-a-half hours of phone calls. And then we had another hour waiting for transport to get here.

(An air ambulance) plane flew into Dickinson County Airport. EMS brought (the air ambulance crew) to the hospital, picked up the patient. Once they were ready to go, took them back to the airport.

And they flew into Oshkosh, and then an ambulance on that end had to pick him up to take him to the hospital.

It was frustrating with the amount of time it was taking. (And) it made me more concerned for patients. You know, I think patients are going to die needlessly, because there’s nowhere to go.

It’s been a real mess and very difficult — not just for COVID patients.

Now we have to do the same thing for any patient that needs a higher level of care than what we can provide. Like I said, we don’t have any specialists here.

I was having a conversation with somebody, and they said, “You know, the real problem is the shortage of nurses.”

And I said, “I’m not gonna argue that the shortage of nurses isn’t part of the problem.”

But the issue is — say you have a 20-bed ICU, but you only have enough nurses for 10 beds. If you have 10 COVID patients in those beds — something that’s now preventable by vaccines — then you don’t have any beds to take anyone else. But if those patients had been vaccinated, then you might still have nine beds for other things.

Twice in the last two weeks we’ve had to go on diversion for admissions because somebody called in sick. I mean, we’re at a point where our hospital is full enough right now that if one nurse on a shift calls in (sick), we can’t add any more patients to the hospital.

Then (patients are) stuck with — there’s nowhere else to go.

If a patient came to the ER and they needed to move to (an inpatient bed in) the hospital … we didn’t have the staff or a bed for them. So then our ER is tied up trying to find a bed (at a different hospital).

Our ER is staffed with a nurse practitioner and a nurse and a tech, usually. So we have three people to take care of anything that comes into the ER. So they don’t really have time to be spending hours on the phone.

(Reporter: What are families supposed to do if their loved one is transferred far away?)

If you have the resources (so) you can take off and get a hotel room and drive several states away to be with a family member, great. But most people don’t have those resources. And then depending on what happens while (the patient is) there, you’ve got to get that patient back. So either they’re alive and you’ve got to get them back, or they pass away and you’ve got to get that body back. And so it just adds extra layers of complications.

The vaccines are safe … they’re effective.

We’ve got to keep doing the things we can to prevent spread, because there’s nowhere to go if you get sick.

I mean, we’re at a point where our hospital is full enough right now that if one nurse on a shift calls in (sick), we can’t add any more patients to the hospital.Then (patients are) stuck with — there’s nowhere else to go.If a patient came to the ER and they needed to move to (an inpatient bed in) the hospital … we didn’t have the staff or a bed for them. So then our ER is tied up trying to find a bed (at a different hospital).Our ER is staffed with a nurse practitioner and a nurse and a tech, usually. So we have three people to take care of anything that comes into the ER. So they don’t really have time to be spending hours on the phone.(Reporter: What are families supposed to do if their loved one is transferred far away?)If you have the resources (so) you can take off and get a hotel room and drive several states away to be with a family member, great. But most people don’t have those resources. And then depending on what happens while (the patient is) there, you’ve got to get that patient back. So either they’re alive and you’ve got to get them back, or they pass away and you’ve got to get that body back. Area doctor tells story of sending critically ill COVID patient 570 miles away

GEARY CO., Kan. – As Geary County Schools USD 475 students return to their classrooms for the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year, the district’s cleaning service provider, ABM, is taking extra steps to ensure they are providing the safest learning environment for the staff and students.

This includes implementing multiple different cleaning techniques and materials, including making the switch from cotton towels and mop pads to microfiber. “[Microfiber] is created from recycled bottles, so it’s very, very microscopic plastic instead of cotton, which absorbs. So, after a while the rags are dirty and the mops are dirty,” said Kurt Hauschild, regional director of operations for ABM and acting account manager for Geary County Schools USD 475. “Microfiber doesn’t absorb, it just traps. You can put microfiber pads in a bucket with chemicals and then you can change out a pad every room versus having to go back every three rooms and empty your bucket and refill it.”

Additionally, ABM will be incorporating a touchless Kaivac restroom cleaning machine for every school, as well as an Unger window cleaner that can reach the windows at each school.

As the coronavirus continues to spread across the area, ABM has continued the intense cleaning techniques put in place last school year, including using almost exclusively disinfectant to combat and clean the high-touch areas around the schools and facilities.

“Our staff is doing everything we’ve been taught to do to keep everybody as safe as we can,” Hauschild said.

Last school year, ABM partnered with Sterling Job Services to provide career opportunities for their clients with special needs or who are having difficulty finding a job.

“We considered it a success to the point where this year we’re going to try to incorporate more of their people,” Hauschild said. “They do the job really well, and it provides them with a place to go and a community.&nbsp;&nbsp;The schools have kind of taken that in and incorporated it, and it just creates an even better environment in the schools. It gives those folks an opportunity to have a job they may not be able to have.”

Hauschild is continuing the partnership with Sterling for this school year and hopes to expand and work with other local companies to further this opportunity to other community members.

“Last year we were very successful,” Hauschild said. “The district, ABM, the partnership with all of the folks made last year a successful year, so I’m very excited to do that again this year.”

1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, "Devil Brigade," 1st Infantry Division (1ID) assumed command during a transfer of authority ceremony with the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division (1CD) in Żagań, Poland, August 13.

The 1ABCT, 1ID, is eager to assume the Regionally Aligned Forces (RAF) mission. It will represent the tip of the spear and rally point from which Devil Brigade headquarters will conduct its mission in Europe.

“As a Soldier, there are two units closest to my heart in the Army," said Col. Jon Meredith, commander of 1ABCT, 1CD. “The 1st Cavalry Division is the Army Strong knockout right hook. The 1st Infantry Division is its soul, and the heart of the Big Red One is the Devil Brigade.

The transfer of authority ceremony, officiated by Brig. Gen. (Promotable) Matthew Van Wagenen, V Corps deputy commander, was the last step of the transition between the two divisions.

“We're excited to have you here,” Van Wagenen said. “We look forward to working with you both in V Corps, but most importantly, for all the allies over here, is that we march forward over the next nine months.”

“These Soldiers are fired up to live and train in Europe, alongside you, our allies and our partners,” said Col. Brian McCarthy, commander of 1ABCT, 1ID. “We're going to master our warfighting skills and demonstrate to the world that we are lethal, ready, resilient and committed, and that Europe has no greater friend than the United States of America.”

In January 2019, the Devil Brigade deployed for nine months to Europe. Geary Community Hospital officials are publishing a daily COVID-19 patient census update at the hospital. For example, on Tuesday, the hospital reported that there were six unvaccinated COVID-19&nbsp; patients being treated in the hospital. Three were in the intensive care unit and all three were on ventilators. There were no vaccinated patients receiving treatment for the coronavirus.

During the Junction City Commission meeting Tuesday evening, Dr. Pat Landes, who is also a commissioner, addressed the topic. If you've had the vaccine you're not in the hospital and not on a ventilator. It's real simple." Landes added that while that is probably not the case everywhere it is very telling. "If you do get the virus you're not going to get that sick. It's very simple and people are dropping. "&nbsp;

Landes noted that he reads chest x-rays every day on people that are on ventilators and it's not good. And I've been looking at them for over a year now." The commissioner said it's not hard to get the vaccine and there are plenty of doses at the hospital year around.

Big Red One pays homage to Pvt. James W. Reese

RCPD located Joshua Jones and he has been taken into custody without incident according to a Facebook post from the Riley County Police Department.

OGDEN, Kan. (WIBW) - Law enforcement officials have closed an area of 10th St. in Ogden as a manhunt continues after a joint county chase on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wibw.com/2021/08/17/rcpd-searching-suspect-geary-co-pursuit/" target="_blank">Monday night.</a>

Riley County Police have asked the public to avoid the area of the 300 block of 10th St. in Ogden as there will be an increased police presence. It said officers will use PA systems and sirens.

RCPD told 13 NEWS that the incident is related to Monday’s manhunt that ended near Ogden when the suspect, Joshua Jones, 32, went missing.

According to the Department, a chase that involved a stolen vehicle out of Riley Co. started in Geary Co. on Monday, Aug. 16. The Geary Co. Sheriff’s Office wanted Jones for possession of stolen property, felony flee and elude and aggravated kidnapping.

Deputies chased the stolen vehicle until Jones crashed on I-70 near mile marker 291 and ran. Authorities searched the area until 9:20 p.m. before they called it off for the night.

Jones was last seen in Ogden, wearing khaki shorts with suspenders and no shirt. He has been described as a black man, 5-foot 9-inches tall, 150 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Geary Co. deputies pursued the stolen vehicle until Jones crashed on I-70 near mile marker 291 and ran away on foot. Authorities searched the surrounding area until 9:20 p.m. before calling it off.

Geary County Commission Chair Trish Giordano notd that it was difficult to make reductions. " But I think our intention was to keep the mill levy about the same since our valuations were going up. "

The spending plan does include a financial coordinator. Applications are being accepted until Sept. 3rd.

A public hearing and final approval for the budget are still pending.

SALINE COUNTY —A 78-year-old Abilene man was found dead in the Smoky Hill River Tuesday morning after a witness reported seeing him tumble off a bridge Monday evening in northeast Saline County.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said this morning that at approximately 6:35 p.m. Monday, as the witness was driving over the Smoky Hill River bridge on N. Niles Road, he saw an elderly man leaning over the bridge railing in front of a parked pickup. 

The witness didn't think the man looked safe, so he slowed down to turn around and tell the man of his safety concern. As the witness was slowing down, he looked in his rearview mirror and saw the man tumble into the river, Melander said. Once the witness called the incident in, the sheriff's office activated several of its water rescue personnel and its drone team, Melander said. Salina Fire Department water rescue personnel also responded, and Dickinson County Sheriff's Office personnel were stationed near the county line.

The search continued until dark, when it was called off until daylight this morning, Melander said. The sheriff's office water rescue personnel, Saline County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol rescue personnel, and Salina Fire Department water rescue personnel resumed looking for the man this morning. His body was located at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday approximately a quarter mile downstream from the bridge, Melander said.

The man was identified as Troy Leatherman, 78, of Abilene.

Niles Road, he saw an elderly man leaning over the bridge railing in front of a parked pickup. The witness didn't think the man looked safe, so he slowed down to turn around and tell the man of his safety concern. As the witness was slowing down, he looked in his rearview mirror and saw the man tumble into the river, Melander said. An annual tradition, the Fall Classic Golf Tournament hosted by the Geary Community Healthcare Foundation, is scheduled Friday, Sept. 24th at Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

Foundation Executive Director Tracy Geisler said that there will be two times at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.&nbsp; More teams are needed for the morning session.

The tournament will raise funds for defibrillators at Geary Community Hospital, said Geisler. "Obviously that's very important equipment and they are in need for new defibrillators right now. They are very costly." The goal is to raise money for eight of them.

The cost to play in the tournament is $110 for each player on teams of four. To sign up contact the Healthcare Foundation or go to their web site.

Breakfast, snacks and an evening steak dinner are part of the event.

Seven people are being treated at Geary Community Hospital for COVID-19. According to a report from GCH all seven are unvaccinated for the coronavirus. Four of the patients are on ventilators.

Medicare Basics: New to Medicare will be offered online&nbsp;via Zoom at noon on Aug. 30. 

Learn the basics of Medicare, including eligibility, how and when to apply, costs, what is covered by the various parts, and how to fill the gaps. Programs available to assist low-income individuals will also be discussed. Anyone interested in learning more about the Medicare maze would benefit from the program, particularly those who are nearing age 65 or who help aging parents with insurance and financial matters.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a car theft and attempting to locate Joshua Jones, 32, of Ogden. 

Police would like to speak with Jones about a vehicle pursuit that started in Geary Co after a stolen car out of Riley County was located by Geary Co Sheriff's Office, according to the Riley County Police Department.

Jones is described a 5-foot-9 and weighs about 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen in Ogden wearing khaki shorts with suspenders and no shirt. If you see Jones, please contact RCPD at (785) 537-2112 or 911.
