 Ten percent of the cost of purchases will be returned to the club to support Geary County youth activities and three scholarships.&nbsp; Donations will also be accepted.&nbsp;

Fundraiser plans are set for the Breakfast Optimists

Grandview Plaza needs a new building to house that city's police department and mostly volunteer fire department operations. But there are questions ranging from how big to make it and what should go in it to where to put it and most of all how to pay for it?

A number of citizens met with the city council Wednesday night to give them input on this topic since the current facility is wearing out. No final decisions have been made but one proposal was reviewed. It would cost approximately $4.2 million dollars and would include amenities for the Fire Department such as fire gear lockers, a chief's office, day room, space for two fire trucks, EMS/Medical supply space, a dormitory for 4-6 people,&nbsp; and space for a future ambulance. For the Police Department there would be space for two Sheriff's Department officers, holding and booking area, an officer room with six desks and an evidence storage area.

This idea included an area for shared needs such as a radio room for each department, a break room, gym / workout space, secure public lobby, a training room and IT.

Public reaction varied but most agreed the $4.2 million price tag was too high. Some opinions included that it would be a waste of tax dollars. Putting Grandview Plaza police and fire in a facility that also included representation from Junction City and Geary County Fire departments was ridiculous when they were just a minute away.

Comments from others in attendance included "You're going to make everybody bankrupt," to "I am for it," and "I do believe there's a need." It was noted that the Junction City Fire Department gets calls all day long so a bigger station could be helpful. "Something has to be done. That ( current ) building is about to fall down." One half of the current building does not follow code. "An upgrade needs to happen. We need to figure out where that is."

There was not any agreement on a floor plan for a new facility. The proposal discussed Wednesday was a conversatiion starter but was not final. 

The population of Grandview Plaza was placed at 1,660 people. The question was posed about whether a dormitory or future ambulance was needed? It was noted that police are running out of space for evidence. There was a consensus that something is needed but not this.There is not any storage for the fire department. The fire trucks do not fit in the current building.

&nbsp; The Kansas Department of Health and Environment ( KDHE ) has lifted the Boil Water Advisory that had been issued for parts of Junction City on Wednesday.&nbsp;

The information was provided by Geary County Emergency Management.

Junction City, Kan. — The City of Junction City announces that the boil water advisory for residents west of Jackson Street has been lifted, and normal water use may resume immediately. The advisory was originally issued after a waterline break caused a temporary loss of pressure in the distribution system. Loss of pressure can compromise chlorine levels and increase the potential for bacterial contamination. 

Out of an abundance of caution, the City notified affected residents while crews worked quickly to restore system pressure and complete necessary repairs. After repairs were completed, the City collected water samples and submitted them to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) laboratory for testing. 

Test results confirmed there was no bacteriological contamination, and all conditions that placed the system at risk were fully resolved. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) reviewed the test results and issued a press release formally rescinding the boil water advisory for the affected area. “We appreciate the community’s patience during this process,” said Public Information Officer, Katherine O’Shea. “Our crews responded immediately to address the issue, and we are pleased to confirm that the water is safe and the system has returned to normal operation.”

Boil Water Advisory is lifted

WW II strategist, hero and later 34th U.S. President of the United States from 1953-1961 Dwight Eisenhower (Ike) had a connection with Junction City.&nbsp; Ike’s younger brother, Roy, lived in Junction City most of his adult life.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

The storefront at 622 N. Washington Street was the site of the Eisenhower Drug Store from 1920 until the mid-1940s.&nbsp; Roy had taken a special course in pharmacy after graduating from Abilene High School.&nbsp; He received a diploma and a certificate from the State of Kansas permitting him to practice his vocation within the state.&nbsp; Though Roy always referred to himself as the “druggist,” Ike preferred the term “pharmacist” when describing his brother.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Roy was born in 1892 and was 28 years old when he got the opportunity to purchase the Reed Drug Store in Junction City .&nbsp; He moved his family here from Ellsworth, Kansas.&nbsp; In 1917,&nbsp; Roy married Edna Shade, who was a registered nurse and whom he had met while working at a hospital in Ellsworth. They worked and struggled to make their new venture prosper during the lean years immediately following the WW I boom in Junction City.&nbsp; For a while the young family lived in the rooms above the drugstore.&nbsp; As their daughters, Pat and Peggy, and son, Lloyd Edgar, grew, they lived in several locations around town until about 1930 when they moved into the house at 417 West First Street. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Roy was described as a “red-hot Republican,” and took more of an active role in local politics than did any of his brothers.&nbsp; Because of the relationship between Fort Riley and Junction City, Roy Eisenhower was better known to the officers and men at Fort Riley than was his military brother.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Fred Souttar, a former Junction Citian recalled one of the times when Ike visited Junction City.&nbsp; In a letter written to the Geary County Historical Society, Fred shared the following memory: “ It happened many years ago in the early 1920s.&nbsp; It was a Sunday night in Junction City.&nbsp; In those days only a few drugstores and cafes were open.&nbsp; Theaters did not have Sunday shows and all other stores were closed.&nbsp; Several of us high school students had gathered in the drugstore on Washington Street for want of something to do.&nbsp; We were chatting away when the door opened and the owner, Roy Eisenhower, entered with a young man in uniform.&nbsp; Only a few of us were in the store, but Roy walked back to where we were seated and introduced his brother, “Ike”, who had graduated from the military academy at West Point.&nbsp; I remember the proud way Roy looked at his older brother.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Roy Eisenhower died suddenly of an apoplectic stroke in 1942 at the age of 49 and did not see his brother attain his greatest glory.&nbsp; However, to many in Junction City, the General, the President and the Stateman, was best remembered as Roy Eisenhower’s brother.&nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; Fred Beeler, a Junction City native who later lived in Manhattan, recalled that when Ike was in Abilene during and after his presidential years, “he would drive his Secret Service guys nuts when he’d occasionally slip away and borrow a car from one of his Abilene friends and drive himself over to Junction City to pay a visit to his brother’s widow.”  She died in 1989 at the age of 97.&nbsp;

The address at 622 N. Washington was a drug store as early as 1880.&nbsp; In the late 1940s and 50s the Leedy Drug Store was both a pharmacy and gathering place at that address where people could go to get caught up on the latest gossip, have an ice cream soda, a Coke or similar product. &nbsp;There were other businesses at 622 N. Washington. For a while Netquest Computers used the building, but 622 N. Washington Street is now used by Activated Dance Studio.&nbsp;

UPDATE: The City of Junction City says that portions of the city are still in a Boil Water Advisory. The City sent 20 water samples to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) for testing on Wednesday evening.

We will share the results from the lab and any updates to the advisory as soon as they are available.&nbsp;

The area affected by this advisory includes most customers west of Jackson Street in Junction City.

Junction City, Kansas – The City of Junction City and the The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) have issued a Boil Water Advisory for a portion of the Junction City public water supply system located in Geary County. The area affected by this advisory includes most customers west of Jackson Street in Junction City.

The advisory took effect on November 12, 2025, and will remain in place until further notice. Junction City notified KDHE of the incident and KDHE issued the advisory following a waterline break that caused a loss of pressure in the distribution system.

Precautionary Measures for Residents

Until the advisory is lifted, residents and businesses in the affected area should take the following precautions:

● Boil water for at least one minute before drinking, using in food preparation, or brushing teeth. Alternatively, use bottled water.

● Dispose of all ice cubes and do not use ice from household automatic icemakers.

● If tap water appears discolored or dirty, flush your water lines by letting water run until it clears.

● Disinfect dishes and utensils by immersing them for at least one minute in clean tap water mixed with one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

● Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled; however, children should be supervised to ensure they do not ingest water. Individuals with open cuts or severe rashes should consult their physicians before using tap water.

City crews are actively working to resolve the issue and restore normal water pressure as quickly and safely as possible. Once testing confirms that the water is safe for consumption, KDHE will issue an official rescind order to lift the advisory.

USD 475 announces All Schools in Junction City are closed on Thursday

KDOT officials, along with local, state, and federal leaders, broke ground on Wednesday morning in Geary County on the K-18 and I-70 Interchange Project.

The groundbreaking ceremony featured remarks from Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Secretary Calvin Reed, Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Scott Proffitt, Geary County Commission Chairman Keith Ascher, and Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran.

"We are here today to celebrate the groundbreaking ceremony for the new interchange that will transform our connection from I-70 to K-18," Secretary Reed said. He also thanked all the local, state, and federal leaders for their efforts in securing funding for this project and others across the state.

According to KDOT, the benefits of this flyover bridge project include reducing congestion, allowing drivers to maintain a safe and consistent speed, accommodating future traffic projections, and accommodating freight. KDOT also says that this project will accommodate K-State gameday traffic without backing up into the through lane on I-70, provide improved driving conditions at the K-18/Boller Road intersection, and lower the number of lane closures during construction.

"This is super near and dear to my heart," Geary County Commission Chairman Keith Ascher said. Commissioner Ascher noted that he grew up right along the gravel road and has seen the transition of I-70 and K-18 over the years. "There is more traffic today than we can ever remember," Ascher said. "These improvements are very important not just to this region but also to the state. For our local and regional impact, though, this interchange matters to the people who live and work here every day." Ascher stated that this will lead to shorter commutes, less congestion, and less frustration for travelers and farmers. "Geary County is proud to be a part of this and is ready to see it through." Along with the other speakers, Commissioner Ascher thanked KDOT and all the local, state, and federal leaders who made this project possible.

One person whom each speaker thanked individually was Kansas U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, who was in attendance and spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony. Senator Moran pointed out the confusion that many drivers face with the current interchange and explained why this new interchange project was necessary. The senator noted that he has been a longtime supporter of efforts to improve K-18 from the west.

"There is probably not an interchange that I go through more than this one," Senator Jerry Moran said. "You're always cautious because you never know if the person in front of you, who is not supposed to stop, will stop, or if the person to the left of you, who is supposed to stop, will stop. This interchange is just so different, and it's just got to be a safety issue," Moran stated.

The Kansas Department of Transportation made it clear that Senator Moran was an influential player in securing some funding for this project. "We work with KDOT to try and make sure they have the necessary dollars to do projects that they are interested in doing and that we think have significant merit," Senator Moran said. "This project was one of them, and so there is $5 million of federal money to help put the money in place for the State of Kansas to do this project."

The overall cost of the project is $27.5 million, and King Construction of Hesston is the primary contractor. The length of the project, which includes a flyover bridge, is approximately two miles and is estimated to be completed in the fall of 2027.

RILEY COUNTY — Authorities are investigating the cause of a house fire in Manhattan.

Just before 11a.m. on Wednesday, crews were dispatched to a house fire at 2409 Lookout Drive, according to a media release from the Manhattan FIre Department.

Crews found a single-story home with fire and smoke showing from the attached garage. The fire was contained within 15 minutes. 

Family members removed an occupant with a physical disability before the fire companies arrived.&nbsp; No injuries were reported.

The building is a single-family residence. Damage to the residence was significant. The owner is listed as Wanda Jepsen who lives there, according to the fire department.

Wednesday&nbsp; the election board performed an audit of Ward 4, Precinct 2 H68 in Geary County and found no discrepancies.

According to County Clerk Courtney Gilbert a post-election audit shall take place after each election. The precincts to be audited are randomly selected by each county elections office. The audit shall be performed manually by the counties and shall review all paper ballots selected to ensure the hand vote count is identical to the vote count from the tabulators. The audit shall be performed by a sworn election board consisting of bipartisan trained board members.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.

Just after 2p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;filed a report of theft in the 1300 block of Hudson Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp; A 73-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole money during a meeting to purchase items for sale. The total estimated loss associated with this case is $9,000. 

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged theft in Manhattan.Just after 2p.m. Monday, police&nbsp;filed a report of theft in the 1300 block of Hudson Avenue, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.&nbsp; A 73-year-old man reported an unknown suspect stole money during a meeting to purchase items for sale. The total estimated loss associated with this case is $9,000. Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

The advisory took effect on November 12, 2025, and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. &nbsp;Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Boil Water Advisory Issued for a Portion of Junction City, Geary County

The average daily high for October was 73.4, 5.5 degrees above normal. The average overnight low was 53.2, 8.2 degrees above normal. This resulted in a monthly mean temperature of 63.3, 6.9 degrees above normal. This places October 2025 as the fifth hottest October on record, right behind last year’s 4th hottest October on record. 

The highest temperature for the month was 88 degrees on the 4th. The lowest temperature for the month was 35 degrees the mornings of the 30th and 31st. A temperature below 40 wasn’t achieved until the 22nd of the month with a morning low of 37. This is over two weeks later than the average first sub 40 degree reading and is the fifth latest date for reaching that mark. The latest sub 40 degree temperature was October 28, 1963. With a low reading for the month of only 35 it also means that we went past our average first frost date of October 19th. This is the 11th time since 1951 that an official first frost will not have occurred until November. (The latest was November 13 in 2021.) 

There was one temperature record set during the month. The low of 69 on the 12th set a new record high low temperature for that date. The old record was 68 set in 2017. The hottest November on record was in 1963 with a monthly mean temperature of 69 degrees. The coldest October is a tie between 2002 and 2009 with a very chilly 49.1 degree monthly mean temperature. 

There were 11 days in October with highs of 80 or above. This is nearly double the long term average of 6 days. While there was not abundant rain during the month we still came close to average precipitation. 2.28 inches was recorded at the Milford Lake Corps of Engineers office. This is two tenths of an inch below the long term average of 2.48 inches. Year to date we have received 31.59 inches of precipitation. This is slightly above the average year to date precipitation of 30.98 inches. And of course, with these temperatures, no snow was recorded for the month.

With days getting increasingly shorter during November, and the sun moving lower in the sky, the temperatures drop noticeably. Average daily highs begin the month at 60 degrees and by the end of the month they are down to 48. Average overnight low on the 1st is 38 degrees and by the 30th it has dropped to a frosty 27 degrees. November starts our annual dry period. Average liquid precipitation is 1.42 inches. November also usually brings us out best chance at early season snow but long term average November snowfall is still only one inch.

Junction City Public Works said that anything west of Jackson Street including Geary County Rural Water District #1 will be on a boil water advisory until further notice. information will also be on the KDHE website and we will continue to update you as we go.

&nbsp; Junction City Public Works reports that a main water line is broken. if you have little to no water pressure this is why. At this time, until further assessment, this effects the western side of Junction City.

 City crews are already at work to manage the leak and assess just who is affected. Further updates will come from public works at a later time&nbsp;&nbsp;

This package includes a short-term continuing resolution that will reopen and fund the entire federal government until January 30, 2026.

This legislation now heads to the U.S. House of Representatives to be considered. “This legislation also included annual federal funding for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and U.S. Department of Agriculture, allowing the continued operation of critical programs like SNAP and WIC.

Junction City Manager Kim Zimmerman told a Veterans Day gathering at the C.L. Hoover Opera House that the different branches of the military cannot function without one another. Zimmerman spent 24 years in the Army.

Remembering his deployment to Iraq&nbsp; in 2007-2008 he said, "It's a real honor to have served."He also noted, "that the mission of the military is to protect and save lives, save our freedom."

Zimmerman provided details on how the brigade in which he was a member worked to maintain law and order, and achieved substantial progress in reducing the number of both direct and indirect fire losses among the population in that part of Iraq.&nbsp;

The Geary County Veterans Alliance hosted the ceremony.

Zimmerman also noted that serving in the military was an honor. "Being a veteran is an honor and something not everybody can do."

Veterans Day is observed in Junction City

A Hutchinson-based nonprofit is making a statewide impact by ensuring that no Kansas veteran faces hardship alone. KS4Vets, founded to bridge the gap between veterans in need and the resources available to them, offers assistance ranging from rent and utilities to groceries, ramps, and transportation.

“We help any veteran who has a need,” said Curtis Jeffries, the treasurer for KS4Vets. “We’re also a place where people who aren’t veterans can come and help veterans. Whether that’s financial help, volunteering, or simply connecting someone to the right resources, that’s what we’re here for.”

KS4Vets’ services cover just about any urgent need a veteran might face — paying rent, keeping the lights on. “If there’s a way for us to help, then we will,” added Danielle Stifler, KS4Vets President. “We’ve helped with groceries, gas, ramps for accessibility — you name it.”

The group also serves as a connector between veterans and other service organizations, such as the VA, Red Cross, and Salvation Army. “We kind of look at ourselves like the hub of a wheel,” Jeffries said. “We have spokes going in all directions. If a veteran calls us, we can look through our network and find someone who can help.”

Community Partnerships and Volunteers&nbsp;

KS4Vets works closely with local partners, including the VFW and American Legion, to coordinate community events and special recognitions. Recently, the group helped arrange a color guard ceremony at a local football game to honor a veteran.

For veterans facing homelessness, the organization steps in to provide temporary housing and connections to VA housing programs. “Homeless veterans exist even locally,” Stifler noted. “We’ve helped cover hotel stays until they can get into the right program.”

Community members can support KS4Vets in several easy ways. The group collects aluminum cans for recycling and participates in the Dillons Community Rewards Program, where shoppers can direct a percentage of their purchases to benefit veterans.

Businesses and individuals can also sponsor specific projects, such as building wheelchair ramps or providing transportation. Volunteers — including contractors — are always welcome to join in hands-on projects.

&nbsp;KS4Vets meets the second Friday of every month, featuring guest speakers who share information about veteran resources and programs. Meetings are open to the public and include both in-person and virtual participation.

“If you show up in person, we’ll feed you,” Jeffries said with a laugh. “And if you can’t make it, we livestream on Facebook and offer a Zoom link.”

</h2>Community members can support KS4Vets in several easy ways. The group collects aluminum cans for recycling and participates in the Dillons Community Rewards Program, where shoppers can direct a percentage of their purchases to benefit veterans.Businesses and individuals can also sponsor specific projects, such as building wheelchair ramps or providing transportation. Volunteers — including contractors — are always welcome to join in hands-on projects.&nbsp;KS4Vets meets the second Friday of every month, featuring guest speakers who share information about veteran resources and programs. KS4Vets extends helping hand to veterans across Kansas

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — As Veterans Day is celebrated across the country, one Kansas-based organization continues to honor those who served by giving them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the memorials built in their honor.

Mike Van Campen, president of Kansas Honor Flight, joined us to share the mission behind the program — a mission that has brought nearly 5,000 Kansas veterans to Washington, D.C., since 2012.

“We started Kansas Honor Flight in 2012 after a previous hub in Great Bend closed,” Van Campen said. “Several of us wanted to continue the mission — and 105 flights later, we’ve now taken just under 5,000 veterans to see their memorials.”

The flights — entirely free for veterans — are made possible through donations from individuals, community groups, and schools across Kansas. The organization operates without any state or federal funding.

“The money simply comes from a grateful public,” Van Campen said. “Churches, American Legion posts, schools — it’s incredible how many students and organizations step up to help our veterans make this trip.”

Each flight follows a carefully organized three-day itinerary. Veterans and their guardians depart Wichita on a Monday and fly to Baltimore, where they visit Fort McHenry before touring the nation’s capital.

Tuesday is a full day of remembrance, visiting the World War II, Korean, Vietnam, Air Force, and Navy memorials, as well as the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery for the Changing of the Guard ceremony.

“We apply for permission to hold a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington for each bus,” Van Campen said. “Twelve veterans per flight get to take part in that very special moment — it’s something they’ll never forget.”

The wreaths, he noted, are handmade by one of his high school classmates who crafts them from grapevines grown on his vineyard near Baltimore.

For many veterans — particularly from World War II and Korea — the Honor Flight experience opens the door to conversations their families have never heard before.

“Their kids tell us, ‘Dad never talked about his service until this trip,’” Van Campen shared. “These men and women came home, took off their uniforms, and went back to work. But on these flights, surrounded by fellow veterans, they finally start to share their stories.”

Guardians and Volunteers Make It Possible

Veterans who need assistance are paired with a guardian, someone who ensures their comfort and safety throughout the trip. Guardians — often a child, grandchild, or volunteer — pay their own way, contributing $900 to cover airfare, lodging, and meals. Veterans travel completely free.

“We’ve even had volunteers who’ve gone seven or eight times,” Van Campen said. “They’ll take off work, pay their way, and help a total stranger — just because they want to give back.”

Kansas Honor Flight operates four flights per year — typically in May, June, August, September, and October — carrying around 95 veterans per trip. The waiting list is currently about a year, meaning those who apply now will likely travel in 2026.
