RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged forgery in Manhattan.

Just after 9a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for forgery in the 500 block of Fort Riley Blvd., according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

 Carpet One and Kansas State Bank reported an unknown suspect stole a business check and deposited it. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $1,990. 

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

On October 1, the JC Breakfast Optimists had as their guest speaker Christine Benne. Christine is the Director of Military Relations and Affiliate and the point of contact for Match Day with the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation (GMCF). The Greater Geary Community Foundation is a part of the Manhattan Foundation.

Match Day is scheduled for October 21 from 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM at the Municipal Auditorium at 700 N. Jefferson Street in Junction City. On that day, opportunities for nonprofit agencies with funds at the Greater Geary Community Foundation will match donations made to participating endowment funds. Matching funds between $25-$7,500 are available to provide a 50% match up to $7,500 per participating organization.

Christine stated that “donors may come to the event and donate or make an online gift to one or several of the participating organizations.

The money earned by each non-profit group is an outright grant and may be used as they wish. Some may choose to establish their endowment, or they may choose to use it for day-to-day expenses. Gifts can be made by cash, check, or online using a credit card. Cash and check gifts should be made in person at the event, or mailed and postmarked on or before October 21, 2025, with a completed donation form, which is available on line.”

Christine also said that “when donating by check, one check must be made payable to GGCF. A separate form will be used to indicate which nonprofit(s) will be used.

The matching funds are made possible by matching donors including R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation, Central Charities Foundation, Crosby Family and the Hoover-Koken Foundation.”

TOPEKA — Fort Riley announced Wednesday that many civilian employees are furloughed as a result of the federal government shutdown that went into effect at midnight Tuesday.

In a social media post, Fort Riley said email messages and phone calls to affected civilian staff will not be answered and many social media channeled will not be monitored.

More than 15 departments were closed, according to the post, including Public Affairs, Soldier and Family Assistance Center, some child care services, the Recycling Center and the Military Personnel Division administration.

Other departments&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/FortRiley/posts/pfbid02xtT4ukJa9FxrxzHqVbqTepydihno6fYpaZ5RQmhKhhd9mcAFj3YCEH16ueiroXRcl" target="_blank">are scheduling work by appointment only</a>.

“Those who still report to work are classified as exempt and are generally in the life/health/safety fields,” Fort Riley’s social media posted in response to a question about who is affected. “Those who are not exempt do not report to work until funding is restored.”

A separate social media post referred people to the U.S. Defense Department’s website, which reads: “Military personnel will continue in a normal duty status, without pay, until such time as a continuing resolution or appropriations are passed by Congress and signed into law. Civilian personnel not engaged in excepted activities will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status.”

Fort Riley also postponed its Retiree Appreciation Day scheduled for Saturday.

In federal information posted online about the government shutdown, federal civilian paychecks for Sept. 7–Sept. 20 would not be delayed. Those checks generally arrive between Sept. 26 and Oct. 2, the information said.

JC Main Street Selected for National Recreation Economy for Rural Communities Program

Congressman Derek Schmidt spoke to a Manhattan audience via Zoom on Wednesday on the subject of the federal government shutdown. He told a Military Relations Committee luncheon that he visited with the Office of Management Budget Director on the current situation.

Schmidt noted that most bills will get paid and it is is more of a lapse in appropriations. The House approved measures two weeks ago to continue operations until Nov. 21 but the Senate isn't there yet. "At the end of the fiscal year a small minority of Senators prefer to grind things to a halt." There are 55 votes and five more are still needed in the Senate.

Schmidt noted that the OMB Director indicated that Social Security, Medicare and VA healthcare payments will not be disturbed.

Military training at Fort Riley will continue. Members of the military will eventually get their money and there is a proposed bill to exclude military pay from the shutdown. Also, military appropriations shutdown may temporarily affect some civilian workers.

Those attending the MRC meeting learned that the community may see reduced access to support programs, local businesses may see reduced traffic and certain events may have to be postponed.The Fort Riley Commissary is on normal operations right now. Dining facilities are a priority for service members. Emergency services will not be cut off.

Government shutdown draws attention at the MRC Luncheon

WABAUNSEE COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for alleged child sex crimes.

On September 27, the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office received a report of unlawful sexual solicitation involving an 18-year-old girl.

According to the report a 58-year-old man requested to meet with the young woman near Eskridge, Kansas last week, according to a social media report from the sheriff's office.

 During the brief meeting, the suspect is alleged to have provided the victim with cash and a condom and is alleged to have solicited her. Deputies met with the victim, collected evidence and initiated a proactive investigation. 

Due to evidence collected during this WBSO proactive investigative action to include the totality of circumstances and objective reasonableness on On September 30. , the suspect, identified as JD Hill of Eskridge was taken into custody without incident. 

&nbsp;Hill was transported to WBCO Jail where he is presently confined on a $5,000 bond on requested charges of (Attempted) Buying Sexual Relations, Hiring a person to engage. The case will be forwarded to the Wabaunsee County Attorney for review of formal charges.

Retiree Appreciation Day at Fort Riley has been postponed

Tapping of the Keg at 4 p.m. Friday will signal the beginning of Oktoberfest in downtown Junction City. The event runs from 4-11 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday. 

North Washington from 6th to 10th Streets will be blocked off for Oktoberfest. According to Co-Director Matt Hoover activities will include a free Kid's Zone tent with arts and crafts, all day play bands for $20, inflatables, climbing walls and&nbsp; putt putt golf. Hoover Opera House with shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and also on Saturday a car show downtown from 3-7 p.m. There will be a street dance Friday evening.

The Drunk Monkeys Band will perform from 6-9 p.m. Friday and Brass Rewind Band from 5-8 p.m. Saturday.

There will be craft beer provided by Highwind Brewing Company, Manhattan Brewing Company, Aggieville Brewing Company and Riverbank Brewing.&nbsp;

There will be 13 food vendors plus ice cream, snow cones and Italian shaved ice.

The downtown streets for the festival will be closed at 7 p.m. Thursday and open back up no later than 9 a.m. Sunday.

Celebrate 100 years of Cooperative Extension in Geary County

The Geary County Rural Fire Department announces that they have received another grant. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/kansasforestservice?__cft__[0]=AZUW1qhYIwAkRwYa4dXCmj8zSan17cXUbH-lJroogLWSIAN73TNLUeFF9yBd_YkB6vF34TjJGUdmpE6KQYiOTJQUQeHniit7y2DHpzKh1XLSUUqMYSi3V6LpYSNwmLzpZbg7m5UTLRkW0AdopEuZwkoIFNBYx4kvx67dx-OJJqqEoxTxGJdanx3WLL_wHmZjozE&amp;__tn__=-]K-y-R">Kansas Forest Service</a> thru the 2025 Volunteer Firefighter Assistance (VFA) Grant awarded Geary County Rural Fire a 50/50 grant in the amount of $3,706.00. This grant money will be purchasing 60 wildland helmet shrouds to protect the firefighters when fighting wildland fires, and 12 sections of forestry hose (50 foot) sections. The forestry hose can be attached to the brush fire units at wildfires so that the firefighters can reach areas inaccessible to the brush unit.

Accorfding to the Fire Department this is the third grant that they have received so far this fall.  Last week was the AFG Grant in the amount of $711,000.00 for air pacs for not only the department but also Grandview Plaza and Milford City Fire Departments.  That was a 95-5% match. Earlier the Kansas Pipeline Association awarded the department a $2,500.00 grant to purchase 5 4-gas monitors. These monitors are being placed on the main structure fire units.  At the scene of a fire, the monitors will be carried by the firefighters to monitor the air quality inside the structure.  They will also be used when responding on carbon monoxide alarms. This grant required no match.

All of the equipment that was requested thru these grants are vital to keeping not only firefighters safe, but also to help them protect the property of citizens. By getting grants, the amount of taxes that the rural residents have to pay for the needed equipment for the firefighters is lessened.&nbsp;

There will be a Walk with a Doc event at 9 a.m. Saturday at the old Junction City High School football field. According to Stormont Vail Health you can walk and talk with Dr. Daniel Regier, a general surgeon at the Flint Hills Campus.

Regier will share how general surgeons use imaging tools like CT and MRI to plan safer more precise procedures.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a&nbsp;30-year-old woman reported an unknown male suspect pointed a handgun at her at the intersection of Hayes Drive and McCall Road in Manhattan just after 11:30p.m. on Monday. The suspect then drove away.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - Geary USD 475 has announced that Westwood Elementary kindergarten teacher Avery Rush and Junction City High School drama teacher BrookeLynn Mackin have been named the district’s nominees for the Kansas Horizon Award Program.

Rush was named the USD 475 Elementary Kansas Horizon Award nominee, while Mackin claimed the Secondary Kansas Horizon Award nomination. By being named USD 475’s Kansas Horizon Award winners, Rush and Mackin both received a $1,000 check on Monday from Central National Bank of Junction City. The duo will also be recognized at an upcoming Board of Education meeting.

The Kansas Horizon Award Program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, identifies, and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in classrooms across the state. The mission of the program is to recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.

Rush, who is now in her second year of teaching at Westwood and graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and Landscape Design, was raised in Harveyville, Kansas. She began working in USD 475 as an instructional assistant in September of 2022 before becoming a long-term substitute at Westwood from 2023 to 2024. She was hired full-time as a kindergarten teacher in January of 2024. Fast forward to 2025 and Rush can now be found encouraging her kindergarten students to do their very best and to enjoy every single day by creating a fun and exciting environment for her students to learn in.

“It is such a huge honor to be named the district’s elementary recipient for the Kansas Horizon Award because I absolutely love teaching,” said Rush. “To be honored by USD 475 as a teacher who is making a difference and doing positive things in her classroom, I can’t say enough how much of an honor this is."

Mackin, who is also in her second year in the district and is originally from Burleson, Texas, has helped carry on a long tradition of Junction City High School having one of the best drama and performing arts departments in the entire state. Mackin, who completed her practicum and student taught at JCHS while finishing up her degree at Kansas State University, will help lead two play performances as a full-time teacher by the end of 2025, which include the Importance of Being Earnest and The Man Who Came to Dinner, which will take place later this semester.

“It means a lot that I was named the Kansas Horizon Award secondary nominee for USD 475 especially since we are so close to a military base,” said Mackin. “Our catchphrase is to educate locally and effect globally, and I feel like we do just that with how many diverse students we have coming in and out. I tend to be pretty hard on myself, so it’s really nice to know that I am making a difference in our students lives.”

Kansas Horizon Award Program winners will be recognized at a special luncheon during the 2026 Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) Conference, which is scheduled for Feb. 19-20, 2026.

The cameras would cost a total of $103,000 and feed into a control room where they could be monitored.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity reported a 2005 GMC Sierra 3500 driven by Carson Avery, 35, of Riley, was traveling in the 9600 Block of Anderson Avenue. The driver lost control in a cloud of dust. The pickup traveled into a culvert. 

EMS transported Avery&nbsp; to Via Christi Hospital for treatment of his injuries.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional detials.
