JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Junction City High School English teacher, Patrick Hancock, made history on Tuesday by becoming the inaugural Kansas State University College of Education Literacy Legacy Award recipient.

On Tuesday, Debbie Mercer, K-State College of Education Dean, and Lotta Larson, K-State professor, surprised Hancock at JCHS by presenting him with a plaque, certificate and books for his classroom.

Hancock, who was recognized for fostering strong relationships with students and creating a classroom environment where literacy is engaging, relevant and empowering, earned a bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education from K-State.“Patrick was the ideal first recipient of the Literacy Legacy Award for so many reasons,” said Mercer. “He embodies the best traits of an English teacher: fostering a love for reading and writing, connecting with students, and using evidence-based methods to develop language proficiency.”

The Literacy Legacy Award honors exceptional literacy educators who make a meaningful impact on student literacy learning. In its inaugural year, the award also celebrates mentorship, influence and generational impact within the field of education.

According to Historical Society Executive Director Heather Hagedorn there will be treats, dresses and activities from 1770, 1860 and 1970. Examples will include the game, Pin the Tail on the Donkey from 1972, rag dolls, living historians and birthday cake. "Well I'm a Kansas historian so anytime we can go back and look at those early days of our state and explore what made people want to settle here, explore the difficulties settling here, I'm all about it. We just want people to enjoy history as much&nbsp; as we do."

The investments will strengthen infrastructure, housing and economic opportunities in rural and low- to moderate-income communities.

The 12 awardees will receive a total of $4,125,316 in federal funds, which was matched by $9,158,623 in local investments. The result was a combined total of $12,283,939 to be used for public improvements in communities across the state.

City of Arkansas, $628,728 – Adding new playground equipment at Wilson Park

Dickinson County will receive CDBG funding

The Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad’s quest to finish the restoration of its iconic steam locomotive, Santa Fe 3415, has entered the final phases, and railroad officials have set Labor Day 2027 as the time when the 110 year-old locomotive returns to the rails.

As the project begins to demand a highly skilled technical point of workmanship, the A&amp;SV is adding a staff of trained steam specialists to work alongside volunteers to maintain consistent progress on fulfilling the Federal Railroad Administration’s mandated 15-year rebuild. The engine was taken out of service in 2023 and cannot run pending complete restoration.

After consulting with project head Steve Schwarting of Abilene, consultant Randy Babcock of Durango, Colorado, and fundraising chair Carl Ice of Manhattan, the A&amp;SV’s Board of Directors has opted to hire trained steam engine crew members from the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Colorado, who will make planned trips to Abilene to assist local volunteers in the process of making the engine operational by the new targeted completion date.

The Durango crew’s assistance will begin immediately. To date, A&amp;SV volunteers have already used ultrasound technology to determine the thickness of the steel in different parts of the boiler, the firebox, and the smoke pot as a means of ensuring the proper strength of those components. A series of related tasks has been established for the fortified workforce to keep the project on schedule.

“Santa Fe 3415 is an important icon for Abilene, the State of Kansas, and the storied history of the steam power that built our nation’s agricultural and manufacturing infrastructure,” said A&amp;SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling..”

Boelling pointed to the fact that the A&amp;SV’s steam powered trains have been especially popular as a tourism draw. In 2023, for example, steam powered trains accounted for roughly 75 percent of the railroad’s excursion ticket sales. The engine is the most recognized symbol of the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad and has attracted “railfan” passengers from across the country. It has been featured on nationally syndicated TV programs, such as the old PBS series “Tracks Ahead,” and has been the subject of numerous articles in railroad and travel publications. 

In 2022, the Saturday Evening Post web site listed the Abilene and Smoky Valley as one of the top seven steam excursion rides in America.The antique locomotive worked for the Santa Fe Railroad from the time of its birth in 1919 to 1953, when ATSF converted from steam to diesel power.&nbsp;The&nbsp;came to Abilene in 1955 and was initially an exhibit in Eisenhower Park before it was reanimated in 2009, the year it began powering excursion and dinner trains.

”The A&amp;SV has already secured nearly $225,000 toward the restoration and return of the Santa Fe 3415, thanks to early supporters and past pledges. Completing the restoration will require additional philanthropic support to fund specialized labor, restoration materials, and critical components needed to bring Santa Fe 3415 safely back into operation. Durango & Silverton steam crew to join volunteers to finish steam engine rebuild 

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – The Kansas Association for Career and Technical Education recently announced that Junction City High School CTE teacher, Aaron Yoder, was named the 2026 Kansas Trade and Industrial Educators Association CTE Young Teacher of the Year.

KTIEA is an affiliate of the Kansas Association of CTE and a part of the national ACTE organization. As an affiliate winner, Yoder is now in the running to become the overall state winner, which will be announced at the 2026 K-ACTE Career Tech Summit on July 19-21 in Overland Park, Kan.

On Tuesday night inside the Blue Jay Event Center at Junction City High School, the full program of Blue Jay basketball swept the Scots of Topeka Highland Park. The JCHS teams went 6-0, winning freshman through varsity games on both the boys’ and girls’ sides.

Girls recap – Junction City 53, Topeka HP 19

The Junction City Lady Jays won their second game of the season, handling the Scots from the opening tip. Junction City started the game on a 10-0 run, thanks to early baskets by sophomores Aniyah Henry-Rivers and Laniyah Warmack, along with Isabel Pruitt. Highland Park took a timeout with 5:13 to go in the first quarter, but the Lady Jays never let up. At the end of the first quarter, JCHS led 14-5.

The second quarter did not feature much scoring, and neither team was able to get going on the offensive end. Junction City led 22-8 at the half.

Third-quarter action is when the Lady Jays really hit their stride. Junction City sophomore Laniyah Warmack scored 15 of the 22 third-quarter points. Warmack converted many steals into layups and even connected on a corner three-pointer to cap off her excellent performance. The Lady Jays led 44-13 at the end of the third and had a continuously running clock in the fourth quarter over Highland Park.

Junction City won the game 53-19 and picked up their second win of the season, both of which have come on their home court.

Several players were involved in scoring the ball. Three players were in double digits; Laniyah Warmack had a career-high 24 points, while Aniyah Henry-Rivers and Isabel Pruitt both added 10 points.

The Junction City Blue Jay boys basketball team got back in the win column Tuesday night, beating the Scots 76-66. The Blue Jays started the scoring with a corner three-pointer by senior Jett Thompson, and then JCHS kept that momentum going, jumping out to an early 10-1 lead. The Blue Jays were running up and down the floor and led by 14, 18-4, at the end of the first quarter.

In second-quarter action, Highland Park found their game as they began running up and down the floor and knocking down some three-pointers. For Junction City, Lovell Autry and Brody Boeckman led the way in scoring in the first half, and the Blue Jays held a 34-25 lead at the break.

Third-quarter action is when things tightened up. It was quite the show between #11 in white (Lovell Autry) and #11 in green (Jojo Kingcannon). Both players really took off in the third quarter, trading baskets and serving as true facilitators on the court. Junction City led 48-40 after a three-pointer in the corner by junior Khaliel Walker, but Highland Park quickly responded with a 9-2 run. The Blue Jays made two free throws to end the third quarter and led by four, 53-49, after three.

In the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, neither team could get a stop on the defensive end. Junction City led 62-60 before Jett Thompson hit a corner three-pointer, giving the Blue Jays a 65-60 lead. They were able to get a couple of stops down the stretch and held on to win 76-66.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan.&nbsp;- Five Junction City High School students have qualified as a META Wildcard Team for the 2026 National LifeSmarts Championship in Orlando, Fla.The Blue Jays FCCLA team, which consists of Mateo Fuentes,&nbsp;Kai Walsh, Brittney Dibben, Aubrey Goddard and Keileigh Johnston, advanced to nationals after presenting on potential solutions to the ever-growing plastic pollution in the environment, which was titled, Beyond Recycling.

“This team was very determined to qualify to nationals. JCHS FCCLA Qualifies for Nationals

DICKINSON COUNTY—Authorities are investigating a fatal fire in rural Dickinson County.

Just before 6p.m. Monday,&nbsp;Deputies with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a house fire in the 1500 block of 1400 Avenue in rural Dickinson County, according to Undersheriff Jeff Vaughan. The residence was fully engulfed when firefighters and deputies arrived.

Deputies located an man and a child outside the residence. Deputies were advised a two-year-old boy was unaccounted for and may be inside the residence. After the fire was brought under control by firefighters, the two-year-old victim was located deceased inside of the residence.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation.

Undersheriff: 2-year-old dies in rural Kansas house fire

MANHATTAN —Fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire at the office of Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Manhattan,

Just before 8:30 a.m., the Manhattan Fire Department was dispatched to a fire in a home at 519 Pierre Street, according to a media release.

 Upon arrival, crews found a two-story house that had been converted to an office for Big Brothers Big Sisters, with fire coming from multiple windows in the rear of the building. 

The fire reached a second alarm before it was contained within 90 minutes.&nbsp; The fire was knocked down within 20 minutes, but it took another hour to fully extinguish fire in concealed spaces. 

A total of 20 firefighters responded on 5 fire apparatus, with the last fire units clearing at around 11:00 a.m. No injuries were reported.&nbsp;Loss is estimated at $10,000 to contents and $175,000 to the structure. 

The owner is listed as Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters Inc. The cause is under investigation at this time

.Thanks to our partners, Riley County Fire District #1 responded with a mobile air unit, Riley County EMS provided rehabilitation for firefighters, and Riley County PD provided scene security.

There were not any injuries. Deputy Fire Chief Ryam Almes confimed that the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Firefighters got the call just before 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. When they arrived on scene they could see fire blowing out of five windows and toward the back of the house that contained the offices It took firefighters about one and a half hours to put the blaze out.

Big Brothers Big Sisters serves approximately 165 to 175 children annually over five counties including Riley, Geary, Pottawatomie, Lyon and Marshall counties.

The Area Director with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Michelle Sink, noted that they do not need a building to serve their children, where approximately 150 are from Riley County and 12 are from Geary County. To meet future needs, however, donations will be needed. (kansasbigs.org/donate-now )

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced&nbsp;fourteen&nbsp;Kansas communities have secured&nbsp;over&nbsp;$45.7&nbsp;million in federal&nbsp;Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act&nbsp;(IIJA) funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Program. &nbsp;

“The Safe Streets and Roads for All program ensures that our communities have the resources to build, operate,&nbsp;and&nbsp;maintain critical infrastructure, which improves quality of life for all Kansans,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“By leveraging federal dollars, and with the&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;Legislature's&nbsp;bipartisan&nbsp;support of this initiative,&nbsp;we&nbsp;are investing into the future of communities across Kansas.”&nbsp;

Combined with more than&nbsp;$10.8&nbsp;million&nbsp;in matching funds from the Kansas Infrastructure Hub and Build Kansas Fund and&nbsp;$566,987&nbsp;in local matching dollars, the total investment into safer streets and roads in&nbsp;Kansas&nbsp;through&nbsp;this round of SS4A grants&nbsp;is&nbsp;over&nbsp;$57&nbsp;million.&nbsp;

Gov. Kelly announces over $57M for safer streets, roads in Kansas 

TOPEKA&nbsp;–&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly today announced $1,496,970 in funding for 20 community-based domestic violence programs across Kansas. Funded through the federal Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA), these grants support and strengthen domestic violence programs that provide emergency shelter, 24/7 confidential call and text hotlines, transportation, and specialized services for survivors of domestic violence as well as their families.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“These services play a vital role in promoting safety, stability, and long-term healing for individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. This crucial funding will go a long way in supporting Kansans as they rebuild their lives,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said.&nbsp;“Through these grants, we are building a more resilient state together.”&nbsp;

FVPSA funding&nbsp;also&nbsp;enhances&nbsp;access to&nbsp;an array of&nbsp;critical resources such as&nbsp;crisis intervention&nbsp;services, support groups&nbsp;and counseling, legal advocacy and court accompaniment,&nbsp;and&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;with protection from abuse orders.&nbsp;The grant also funds&nbsp;prevention education in schools and communities&nbsp;across Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

--Commissioners Kathy Tremont and Trish Giordano were complmentary of the snow removal efforts by city and county public works crews during the recent storm.

--Tremont and Giordano expressed disappointment about the recent presentation about Geary County and Junction City during a regional summit in Manhattan last Friday. The need to tout accomplishments in Junction City and Geary County and do a better job of selling this area was mentioned.&nbsp;

--The county website and email addresses have transitioned from .org to .gov.

--The next night meeting for the county commission will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

--The biweekly report from the Geary County Sheriff's Department included an average daily jail population of 93 inmates. There were eight accidents and 14 arrests during the period.

Sunset Zoo is very excited to announce its new Director, Dr. Kaleigh Reyes. Dr. Reyes is new to Manhattan from Bangor, Maine where she was a Professor of Animal Behavior at Husson University. 

Dr. Reyes also previously served as a Gorilla Scientist at Basel Zoo in Switzerland.Dr. Reyes completed her Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from the University of Toronto (UofT) in 2025 with a focus in primatology and specialization in great ape cognition, welfare, and behavior. 

In addition, she has a deep passion for ornithological science and welfare, partially inspired by her two pet African Grey Parrots, Zoey and Rocky. &nbsp;At UofT, Dr. Reyes served on various university and government review boards for animal ethical compliance (IACUC &amp; CCAC) to contribute her expertise on primate and avian welfare.&nbsp;

Throughout her twelve-year career in primatology, Dr. Reyes has conducted ethical, scientific research on primates and parrots in human care at zoos across North America and Europe and with nonprofit ape conservation organizations. Dr. Reyes has also conducted numerous field sessions with wild chimpanzees and parrots in Senegal (West Africa) during her master’s degree at Texas State University and in Uganda (East Africa) during her bachelor’s degree at Indiana University Bloomington in her home state.

Dr. Reyes is new to Manhattan from Bangor, Maine where she was a Professor of Animal Behavior at Husson University. Dr. Reyes also previously served as a Gorilla Scientist at Basel Zoo in Switzerland.Dr. Reyes completed her Ph.D. in Biological Anthropology from the University of Toronto (UofT) in 2025 with a focus in primatology and specialization in great ape cognition, welfare, and behavior. In addition, she has a deep passion for ornithological science and welfare, partially inspired by her two pet African Grey Parrots, Zoey and Rocky. &nbsp;At UofT, Dr. Reyes served on various university and government review boards for animal ethical compliance (IACUC &amp; CCAC) to contribute her expertise on primate and avian welfare.&nbsp;Throughout her twelve-year career in primatology, Dr. Reyes has conducted ethical, scientific research on primates and parrots in human care at zoos across North America and Europe and with nonprofit ape conservation organizations. Dr. Reyes has also conducted numerous field sessions with wild chimpanzees and parrots in Senegal (West Africa) during her master’s degree at Texas State University and in Uganda (East Africa) during her bachelor’s degree at Indiana University Bloomington in her home state. Sunset Zoo welcomes new Director

Geary County is currently taking applications for membership for the County's Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Geary County has not had an active CERT team since 2020 during COVID.

Previous CERT members or others who wish to possibly become CERT trained and be part of the Team are asked to complete an application. It can be picked up at the Geary County Emergency Management Office, 236 E 8th during normal business hours.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.

Applications will be accepted through January 30. Those selected for the CERT Team will attend training Friday, February 20 (evening); Saturday, February 21; and Saturday, February 28 cumulating with an exercise based on what the members learned.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Geary&nbsp; USD 475&nbsp; announced that Junction City High School CTE Administrator, Kale Katt, has been named the 2026 Kansas Association of Agricultural Educators Administrator of the Year.Katt was honored at the KAAE Mid-Winter Symposium&nbsp;in Wichita on Friday, Jan. 23.

The Administrator of the Year award recognizes administrative CTE professionals who have not only demonstrated leadership in ensuring teacher and student success, but have also made significant contributions toward innovative, unique and effective career and technical education programs.

Junction City High School agriculture and FFA teacher Ashley Vahsholtz was also recognized at the&nbsp;symposium for being named the K-ACTE Young Teacher of the Year.

City of Junction City Snow Removal Update



Here’s our most up-to-date snow removal update as of 11:00 PM on January 25th. Our Public Works and Parks &amp; Rec crews continue working 12 hour shifts to keep Junction City moving safely.

&nbsp;Crews are out salting and sanding today. We will continue to update the community as more information becomes available. 

Areas addressed during this operational period include:

• Truck #671 — Cleaned residential streets in the Sutterwoods area, Olivia Farms area, North Park area, Westwood area, west side of Eisenhower Street from 11th–14th, east side of Jackson from Monroe from 18th–10th Streets, and Industrial Road to the Southwest Wastewater Plant.

• Truck #670 — Cleaned residential streets south of Ash Street and east of St. Mary's Road, including the Water Treatment Plant area.• Truck #673 — Cleaned residential streets in the Spring Valley area, Indian Ridge area, Garfield north of Ash Street to 14th Street, and Ash to 18th Street going north and south on Madison, Adams, Webster, Monroe, and Price Streets.

• Loader — Began cleaning the airport taxiway and runway, downtown parking areas, and roads surrounding schools.

• Trucks #810 and #613 — Cleaned cul-de-sacs and parking lots. Thank you to our crews for their dedication and to our residents for your patience and cooperation as snow removal efforts continue.&nbsp;

Junction City Public Works Snow Removal Updates

The 87th Annual Meeting of the Geary County Conservation District was held at the Senior Center/4-H building in Junction City on the evening of January 22. The audience gathered to hear the report of the District’s activities over the past year and to honor two local families for their outstanding work in preserving and enriching the natural resources of this area of the Flint Hills.

Following the meal sponsored by Central National Bank, Intrust Bank, KS State Bank and Landmark Bank, Chairman, Rod Gfeller opened the business part of the meeting. The annual report and treasurer’s report were presented for the crowd’s approval. The election of supervisors was held with Gary Schellhorn being reelected and Scott Miller newly elected. Scott will take Sarah Ellis-Schmidt’s place on the Board. Sarah had served faithfully for the last 12 years most recently serving as the vice-chairman.

Todd, Janice and Shayla Erichsen were presented with the Banker’s Award for Soil Conservation. The Erichsen’s have utilized cost-share programs to implement both structural practices, such as terraces and waterways, and management practices such as the use of cover crops to conserve and restore the health of the soil on their property. Lindsey Snider, of Central National Bank, gave the award presentation.

Phillip and Kristen Goodyear were the recipients of the Banker’s Award for Water Quality Conservation. Goodyear’s also utilized federal cost-share funds to close an old livestock waste lagoon, protecting the water quality in the Humboldt Creek watershed. Wendy King-Luttman, KS State Bank, was the presenter for their award.

Conservation District conducts annual meeting

FORT RILEY, Kansas – The 1st Infantry Division proudly commemorates the 250th birthday of the 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment — known across generations as “Hamilton’s Own” — the oldest regular Army unit in continuous active service.&nbsp; The unit is currently deployed to the U. S. Army Europe command region.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Founded on January 6, 1776, by a young artillery captain named Alexander Hamilton, the unit began as the New York Provincial Company of Artillery. With just two six-pound guns and 25 Soldiers, Hamilton led his fledgling company across the Delaware River alongside Gen. George Washington, firing some of the first artillery shots that helped secure early American victories at Trenton and Princeton.

Over the last two and a half centuries, the unit has been reorganized, redesignated, and deployed across nearly every major conflict in American history — from the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Civil War, to World War I, World War II, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and multiple deployments to Iraq. Today, the battalion continues its distinguished service as part of the 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley.

“Hamilton’s Own is more than a battalion — it is a living piece of American history,” said leaders of the 1st Infantry Division. “For 250 years, its Soldiers have carried forward a legacy of courage, discipline, and innovation that began with one of our nation’s Founding Fathers.”

The battalion’s lineage includes extraordinary moments of heroism, including the actions of Lt. Col. Charles C. Rogers, who received the Medal of Honor for leading the defense of Fire Base Rita during a massive enemy assault in Vietnam in 1968.

Today, “Hamilton’s Own” continues to train and operate with the same spirit that has defined it since the Revolution — a commitment to readiness, precision, and service to the nation.

“The anniversary ceremony honored generations of Redlegs whose dedication and sacrifice have shaped both the battalion’s proud traditions and the freedoms enjoyed by the Nation today,” said Major Joshua Henry, executive officer, 1st&nbsp;Battalion, 5th&nbsp;Artillery.&nbsp;

“From revolutionary beginnings to today’s technologically advanced force, 1-5 FA remains a symbol of excellence and resilience. As the unit looks toward the future, leaders reaffirmed their commitment to preserving its storied heritage while training the next generation of Artillery professionals to serve with honor for centuries to come.”
