(JUNCTION CITY, Kan.) On Friday, August 1, Konza Prairie Community Health Center will open an Acute Care Walk-In Clinic in Junction City located at 361 Grant Avenue.

The Konza Junction City Acute Care Walk-In Clinic will be open to Konza patients and anyone in the community to access acute care needs such as upper respiratory infections or urinary tract infections. The Walk-In Clinic will be open Monday – Thursday, 8 AM – 5 PM and Fridays 8 AM – 1:30 PM. No appointment is needed, and new patients are welcome.

Consider using the Konza Walk-In Clinic for non-emergency symptoms that started recently and are not severe: for example, cough, fever, painful urination, or a sore throat. The Konza Walk-in Clinic can also provide school sports physicals and affordable birth control options.

Konza Family Nurse Practitioner Stephanie Kimbrel, FNP-BC will be the primary healthcare provider for walk-in visits. “As a Junction City native – and proud Blue Jay – I am honored to care for people of all ages in our community,” said Kimbrel.

Kimbrel earned her bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University, then she went on to Washburn University, graduating with honors in 2012 to complete her Master of Science in Nursing. She joined Konza in 2023 and has more than a decade of experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

The clinic accepts most major insurance plans, including KanCare/Medicaid and Medicare. Uninsured patients are welcome and Konza offers discounts for eligible patients.

“Convenience and accessibility are essential in healthcare delivery,” said Konza Chief Executive Officer Danielle Hallgren. “Opening a dedicated walk-in clinic expands our ability to serve the community, offering prompt care for non-emergency conditions.”

The Junction City Brigade won both weekend games at the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series in Wichita. The Brigade are 2-0 in pool play, with one game left before bracket play begins later this week.&nbsp;

Junction City began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, and took a 1-0 lead into the second. TPA then scored two in the top of the second to lead 2-1. Quickly, the Brigade responded with three in the bottom of the second and then five in the fourth and cruised to victory. winning 11-7 in their first game at the 91st NBC World Series.&nbsp;

Kyler Horsman was named Player of the Game with three hits, (one of them a home run), and also had four runs batted in.&nbsp;

The Junction City Brigade wasted no time scoring runs. The Brigade scored eight runs in the top of the first inning. Chad Pantuso, the second batter of the game, hit a two-run home run to jumpstart the offense. GPS attempted to make it interesting, scoring two runs in the second, and three in the third making it a 8-5 Brigade leading going into the fourth. Junction City added one run in the fifth, three in the seventh, and three more in the ninth. The Brigade won 15-8, and go to 2-0 in pool play.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating an alleged violent robbery in Manhattan.

Just after 11p.m. Friday, officers filed a report for aggravated robbery and aggravated battery in the 3600 block of Everett Drive in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;A 17-year-old man was listed as the victim when it was reported unknown suspects battered him in his driveway and stole personal property. 

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

The Junction City Commission has adopted a resolution changing the name of the Live Well Geary County Food Policy Council to the Live Well Geary County Food and Farm Council. The update reflects the current mission to support the local food system. 

 The Food and Farm Council requested the name change to reflect its focus on food access, including support for local farmers, sustainable food systems, community education, and economic development. Established in 2016, the Food and Farm Council has supported local Initiatives such as the Healthy Food Prescription Program, local farmers' market, community gardening, and the 10-Year Food System Plan.

 The mission of the Food and Farm Council is to build a stronger, more equitable local food system that ensures all Geary County residents have access to healthy, affordable food. The Food and Farm Council works to identify barriers within the local food system and develop sustainable, community-driven solutions. Its goals include increasing food access, addressing hunger and food insecurity, supporting local agriculture, and influencing policies that shape food production and distribution.&nbsp;

  As part of the reorganization, the Commission also appointed the following members to the Council. Food and Farm Council

Collection of school supplies for the Stuff the Bus program continued Saturday at Dillons and the Walmart Supercenter in Junction City.

Volunteers are helping with the collection of the supplies. Donors can also contribute funds for the effort. Distribution will be made to children in Geary USD 475, Chapman&nbsp; USD 473 and Saint Francis Xavier School for the upcoming school year.

Another collection day is set for this next Saturday, Aug. 2, at the same locations from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

USD 475 Hosts Back-to-School Carnival on Friday, Aug. 1

Dale Anders of rural Chapman, Kansas, is retiring after a distinguished 42-year career in the banking industry. His family noted that for the past decade, Dale served as Commercial Relationship Manager at INTRUST Bank, formerly Millennium Bank, in Junction City where he helped support and grow local businesses and farms across the region.

Dale’s roots run deep in Kansas agriculture. Raised on a small swine and cattle farm outside of Eudora, Kansas, he learned early on the importance of financial stewardship. That foundation led him to pursue a degree in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University.

Following graduation, Dale began his professional journey as a State Bank Examiner and completed the Advanced FDIC School in Washington, D.C. In 1990, he graduated from the Graduate School of Banking in Boulder, Colorado. Over the years, Dale provided vital agricultural and commercial lending services—first as a loan officer for 17 years at Dickinson County Bank in Enterprise, and later during a 10-year tenure at Exchange Bank in Junction City, formerly First National Bank and Trust.

.In retirement, Dale looks forward to spending more time with his two grandchildren. He also plans to stay active through his volunteer work preserving local history at the Dickinson County Historical Society and sharing his faith at Lyona United Methodist Church.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – As the temperatures climb into the 90s and above, most trees require more water, but more water means more costs. Kansas State horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says modifying soaker hoses can help homeowners save a few dollars.

“Soaker hoses are notorious for non-uniform watering,” Domenghini said. “In other words, you often receive too much water from one part of the hose and not enough from the other part.”

Patchy water application may not affect smaller trees, as the soaker will circle the tree several times, but can affect larger trees. For more uniform watering, Domenghini suggests hooking the beginning and end of the soaker hose to a y-adapter to equalize pressure and provide more uniform watering. The parts needed are just a y-adapter and a female-to-female connector.

“It is also helpful if the y-adapter has shut-off valves so the volume of flow can be controlled,” Domenghini said. “Too high a flow rate can allow water to run off rather than soak.”

The position of the hose can also make a difference. On larger trees, Domenghini said the soaker hose can circle the trunk at least half the distance to the drip line. On smaller trees, she said the hose can circle the tree several times so only the soil that contains tree roots will be watered.

To check if the watering is effective, Domenghini said the soil should be wet at least 12 inches deep. A metal rod or something similar can be used to check.

“Dry soil is much harder to push through than wet and your probe will stop when it hits dry soil,” she said. “How long it takes water to reach a 12 inch depth varies depending on the rate of water flow and soil.”

As a test when first watering the tree, record the amount of time it takes to reach a 12-inch depth of dampness. The tree can then be watered for that amount of time in subsequent watering.

The new Geary County Food Pantry is located at 700A W. 7th Street. Local officials and community leaders gathered for the ribbon cutting on Saturday.

Debbie Johns serves as director of the new 38-hundred square foot facility. "We offer different programs for neighbors that are food insecure in Geary County. They have a once a month shopping experience." There is also an opportunity to obtain food any time during the month if there are people needing food and for those without housing.

There is a Wheels of Hope program for school aged children and their families that are food insecure on the second Thursday of the month. Senior Commodities are also offered.

There is a Fresh Food Friday program that includes fresh produce and bakery items for the community, which does not require registration at the Food Pantry.

There was an earlier soft opening for the Food Pantry with Johns confirming 2,210 people were served in the month of June, up from about 1,400 in May at a former smaller facility.

Johns noted that Geary County has the highest food insecurity rate among children in the state. "We hope that we're helping bring that down a little bit."

The city and county provided funding for the project along with other donors and tax credits. Hutton Construction built the building.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — Kansas cotton fields are entering the critical squaring phase, so Kansas State University agronomist Logan Simon and entomologist Anthony Zukoff say timely scouting will be essential to protect yield potential.

“Overall, Kansas cotton acres are down this year like most of the US cotton belt and the cotton we have is generally behind in development compared to normal,” Simon said. “Although south-central Kansas had severe storm damage that hurt the cotton down there, many were able to hold on pretty good.”

As cotton enters this key reproductive stage, as evidenced by early formation of flower buds, K-State Extension entomologist Anthony Zukoff shared the importance of monitoring for cotton fleahoppers and tarnished plant bugs, also known as lygus bugs.

“These two insects can be very detrimental to overall yield so it’s important to keep an eye out for them now,” Zukoff said.

“They are very excitable, so they can be tricky to scout for. We recommend using a drop cloth or sweep net method to determine if these insects are in the field,” Zukoff said. “Depending on the method, the threshold will be different, so we recommend using our&nbsp;<a href="https://bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/download/cotton-insect-pest-management-2025_MF2674">cotton insect management guide</a>&nbsp;to determine if the insect count is over that threshold.”

The cotton flea hopper is about 1/8 of an inch and lime green color, while the lygus bug is about twice the size and a tan color. Zukoff noted that control options are available if populations reach economic thresholds.

“If they do reach that threshold, all is not lost,” he said. “Producers can save their fields if they take action quickly. The important thing is to be proactive rather than reactive; get out there right now and scout.”

“The early and first position squares are the most important fruiting positions on a cotton plant as they will contribute the most to the final yield,” Simon said. “Once the plant matures, those insects will not be as much of a problem for later squares.”

Zukoff and Simon also advised corn growers to be scouting for western bean cutworm.

“The western bean cutworm is a pest of corn, specifically corn ears as they tassel,” Zukoff said.

“Western bean cutworm overwinters in the soil as pupa, and this time of year adult moths will be emerging from those pupae and laying eggs. Those eggs hatch and caterpillars make their way to the tasseling corn fields,” Zukoff said. “Once the pest gets to the field, it will eat developing kernels and cut the silks on its way up, which makes it detrimental to final yields and developing crops.”

Scout for insects in cotton and corn fields 

Four local K-9s and their handlers were honored by the K9 Quilt of Honor this last Thursday, July 24, at Milford State Park, 3612 State Park Rd.

Geary County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Handler Deputy Cayla Da Giau and her partner Enzo, and K-9 Handler Deputy James Regalado with his K-9 partner, Klesta, are two of the four being honored.

The other two, from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Game, are Warden Lt. Lance Hockett and K9 Kodak, and Game Warden Jake Brooke, along with his partner Kreed. Both are from the Milford Office.

The K9 Quilt of Honor recognizes Law Enforcement Officers on the local, state, and federal level, Military, Fire working K9s and their handlers for their willingness to serve their community and stand in harm’s way to keep its people safe.

“I am incredibly proud of our K9 units, not only for their outstanding work in fighting crime, but also for their dedication to community outreach through school visits and local events. Having them recognized by the K9 Quilt organization is a tremendous honor for our Office. Carolyn Blum’s work on this nationwide project is truly remarkable,” said Sheriff Nate Boeckman.

The Geary County Sheriff’s Office K-9s were brought to the attention of Carolyn H. Blum, founder of K9 Quilt, by her grandson Cody, who attends Milford Elementary School. He met Enzo and Klesta at Camp Shield, put on by the Geary County Community Involvement Team, and at school. It was Cody who brought them to the attention of his grandmother, and Cody’s mom keeps up with K9 units around the area, according to Blum.

The K9 Quilt effort began with Kobi, a K9 deputy, who retired from the Indian River County (FL) Sheriff’s Office at the height of the pandemic when law enforcement was having challenges in June of 2020.  </figure>Geary County Sheriff's Office Release--Four local K-9s and their handlers were honored by the K9 Quilt of Honor this last Thursday, July 24, at Milford State Park, 3612 State Park Rd.Geary County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Handler Deputy Cayla Da Giau and her partner Enzo, and K-9 Handler Deputy James Regalado with his K-9 partner, Klesta, are two of the four being honored.The other two, from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Game, are Warden Lt. Lance Hockett and K9 Kodak, and Game Warden Jake Brooke, along with his partner Kreed. Both are from the Milford Office.The K9 Quilt of Honor recognizes Law Enforcement Officers on the local, state, and federal level, Military, Fire working K9s and their handlers for their willingness to serve their community and stand in harm’s way to keep its people safe.“I am incredibly proud of our K9 units, not only for their outstanding work in fighting crime, but also for their dedication to community outreach through school visits and local events. Having them recognized by the K9 Quilt organization is a tremendous honor for our Office. Carolyn Blum’s work on this nationwide project is truly remarkable,” said Sheriff Nate Boeckman.The Geary County Sheriff’s Office K-9s were brought to the attention of Carolyn H. Blum, founder of K9 Quilt, by her grandson Cody, who attends Milford Elementary School. He met Enzo and Klesta at Camp Shield, put on by the Geary County Community Involvement Team, and at school. It was Cody who brought them to the attention of his grandmother, and Cody’s mom keeps up with K9 units around the area, according to Blum.The K9 Quilt effort began with Kobi, a K9 deputy, who retired from the Indian River County (FL) Sheriff’s Office at the height of the pandemic when law enforcement was having challenges in June of 2020. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Trinity M. Sproul, 18, Wamego, was eastbound on Kansas 18 one half mile east of Kansas 114.

The driver one lost control and struck a 2007 Pontiac G6 which was parked with flashers on on the side of the roadway.&nbsp; After impact, the Pontiac struck 2 pedestrians identified as Koltyn T. Moore, 29, Manhattan, and&nbsp; Rod&nbsp; Marti, 40, who were in&nbsp;front of it.

EMS transported Moore and Marti to Via Christi in Manhattan. Sproul was not transported and properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The 2025 regular season for the Junction City Brigade wrapped up last weekend, and the Junction City Brigade finished in second place in the Jayhawk Collegiate League. By finishing in the top three, the Brigade qualified for the National Baseball Congress (NBC) World Series.

Junction City lost their first two games of the season and then held steady, staying right about .500 into late June. On June 25, the Brigade had a record of 10-9. After that, they ended the regular season winning 15 of their final 17 games and finished 25-11. (Junction City only finished behind the Hutchinson Monarchs, who went 25-7).

Junction City will now play in the postseason at the NBC World Series this weekend. This is the first year for the Brigade in the Jayhawk Collegiate League, so it is also the first year they have qualified for the NBC World Series.

In a radio interview with 107.9 FM / 1420 AM KJCK Radio, General Manager of the Brigade, Cecil Aska, expressed excitement about playing in the postseason tournament. "This is a brand new experience for us," Aska said. "The main thing I want our guys to do is stay in the right frame of mind and represent our community and the Junction City Brigade, and help put us on the map."

Micah Cannon, the head coach of the Brigade, in his first year coaching the team, is appreciative of the opportunity, but also wants his team to realize more work is still to be done. "I just keep challenging our guys," Cannon said. "I don't care if we are playing the Yankees or the Bad News Bears, I challenge them to compete the same way."

The NBC World Series, which is in its 91st&nbsp;year, is held in Wichita and played at Eck Stadium, the home of the Wichita State Shockers baseball team. 16 teams make it into the NBC, and they are from all across the country. 16 teams are split into four different pools, and three teams from each pool advance into bracket play, which begins next week. The World Series began on Thursday, July 24, and goes through Saturday, August 2.

Junction City will play three games in pool play. Their pool play schedule is posted below.

Game 1 - Junction City Brigade vs. TPA Texas - Saturday @ Noon

Game 2 - Junction City Brigade vs. GPS Legends - Sunday @ 3:00 p.m.

Rural County residents, only, may pick up their County voucher at 310 E 8th Street from 8AM – 4:30PM, starting Monday, July 28th.
