MANHATTAN —&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ageconomics.k-state.edu/directory/faculty_directory/griffin/">Terry Griffin</a>, professor of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ageconomics.k-state.edu/">agricultural economics</a>&nbsp;at Kansas State University and a precision agriculture economist, has been appointed to the second cohort of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.weather.gov/swag">Space Weather Advisory Group</a>, a crucial advisory body for the White House Subcommittee on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.sworm.gov/">Space Weather Operations, Research and Mitigation</a>, or SWORM. His expertise will contribute to national preparedness against space weather events through 2027.

The group, or SWAG, advises SWORM on improving the ability of the U.S. to prepare for, mitigate, respond to&nbsp;and recover from space weather events such as solar flares and geomagnetic storms. SWAG also advises improving the flow of knowledge and technology between research and operational applications and will develop and implement an integrated space weather observation strategy including subsequent updates and reevaluations.

“As a representative of our nation's end-users who are directly affected by space weather, I have been estimating potential economic damages to agriculture, construction, drilling and mining when GPS technology, also known internationally as Global Navigation Satellite System, signal degradation occurs,” Griffin said.

Griffin’s impactful research, publications, and presentations on solar storm effects on precision agriculture includes&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/news-and-publications/news/stories/2025/04/agriculture-solar-weather-gps-outage.html">his work on the Gannon Storm in May 2024</a>, which occurred while many producers were planting corn. Midwestern farms were particularly susceptible to Global Navigation Satellite System, or GNSS, signal degradation, which significantly impacted the accuracy of precision agriculture technologies.

This vulnerability was heightened by fewer available fieldwork days due to unfavorable weather, further delaying planting.

"Currently, about 70% of planted acres in the United States rely on equipment that uses GPS automated guidance to make straight parallel lines through the field," Griffin said. "We no longer exclusively use physical row markers, and the equipment is getting bigger to the point that we can no longer operate when the GPS is taken away. Not all farms were affected, but those that were lost on average about $17,000 per farm. It's not catastrophic, but they'll miss it."

Along with other members of SWAG, Griffin will continue work on a user-needs survey to identify the space weather research, observations, forecasting&nbsp;and modeling advances required to improve space weather products.

The timing of this effort is of great importance at this time in solar maximum.

“Although GPS has been used for agricultural purposes since the mid-1990s, we are just now experiencing heightened amounts of solar activity during the GNSS era," Griffin said. "Automated guidance technology was commercialized during the tail end of Solar Cycle 23 then the next solar cycle was relatively calm in comparison. It is increasingly likely that the next two growing seasons will have adverse GNSS outages for the farming community.”

GEARY COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after 2:30p.m. Thursday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Tesla driven by Terry L.&nbsp;Roehr, 73, Colorado Springs, was entering Interstate 70 from the&nbsp;eastbound on ramp at Kansas 177. The vehicle was traveling too fast for the conditions and hydroplaned.&nbsp; The Tesla collided with a 2002 Ford pickup driven by&nbsp; &nbsp;Sawyer G.&nbsp; Ibarra, 16, Alma.&nbsp;

EMS transported both driver to Via Christi in Manhattan. Three passengers in the Tesla were not injured. All were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

An audience of approximately 90 parishioners, teachers, parents, students and alumni attended a briefing this week on an operational stability assessment to help the future of Saint Xavier School. According to School Principal Shawn Augustine there was a survey that included data collection and focus areas that included leadership, planning, development, communications, enrollment management, organizational structure and revenue generation.

&nbsp;Councils, the parish, school and finances all received attention.&nbsp;There were talks with school leaders and interviews with the parish and school administration plus families. A national company called ISPD is working on the project.

Strengths ranged from small class sizes amd individualized student attention to committed staff and a safe family oriented environment.

Challenges include financial sustainability and increasing enrollment for a PreK-12 school. ISPD wii provide directive measures on what Saint X can do to continue to provide sustainability.

The Geary County Food Pantry is already serving the public at their new location, but they will host a grand opening event on Saturday, July 26. The grand opening celebration will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.&nbsp;at their new location, 700A W. 7th Street in Junction City.

The Food Pantry held a soft opening earlier this year on May 29, while miscellaneous work around the facility was finished.

Call centers see uptick in reports of attempted scams

Kansas City, Mo. - July 24, 2025 – Evergy is warning customers to be vigilant after an increase in attempted scams this summer.

Scammers are becoming more deceptive thanks to technology, using everything from fake websites to cloned phone numbers to third-party payment apps and more to rip off Evergy customers.

Evergy urges customers to watch out for scammers this summer

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating alleged criminal damage at a bank in Manhattan.

Just before 11a.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for criminal damage to property in the 700 block of Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Landmark Bank reported an unknown suspect damaged the door to the ATM check/cash drop. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $600. 

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

Rain chances for Thursday

The Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health has been notified of two separate events in which horses in Kansas have tested positive for reportable diseases. The agency has responded to both incidents according to the state’s disease response plan.

In mid-July KDA was notified by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory that a horse in Sedgwick County has tested positive for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). The facility and all horses on the premises were placed under quarantine until further testing of all exposed horses was completed. Preliminary results indicate that there are additional horses testing positive. EIA is an untreatable disease and response actions are being made accordingly. The remaining horses at the facility that tested negative will be observed and retested in 60 days. The positive symptomatic horse did die from complications associated with EIA.

KDA has identified a prescribed surveillance area within one-quarter mile of the affected premises and is working with local officials and horse owners to identify any other horses that may have been within that surveillance area.

EIA does not affect people, but it can spread to horses, mules and donkeys. The virus can be transmitted from an infected equine to a “clean” equine by biting flies, the use of unsterilized or contaminated medical instruments, or through a blood transfusion. Clinical signs of EIA include fever, anemia and edema; however, affected horses may not show symptoms. EIA can be fatal in horses. All infected horses, including those which are asymptomatic, are carriers of the disease.

There are typically a small number of cases of EIA in the United States every year, although the disease is common in other parts of the world. EIA is controlled in the U.S. by regular testing before traveling across state lines and/or exhibition. The test for EIA is commonly called a Coggins test. This spring, KDA expanded regulations to require a negative Coggins test be completed within the previous 12 months for horses that are changing ownership or are used for exhibition purposes. These regulations are in addition to the previous requirement of a negative Coggins test for horses entering Kansas.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health has received notification of a confirmed case of West Nile virus (WNV) in a horse in Harper County.

WNV is a virus that can infect humans, horses, birds and other species. Horses infected with WNV can have symptoms that range from depression, loss of appetite and fever to severe neurologic signs such as incoordination, weakness, inability to rise, and hypersensitivity to touch or sound. WNV can be fatal in horses. If you see symptoms of WNV in your horse, contact your veterinarian immediately.

WNV is a preventable disease, with annual vaccinations that have proven highly effective. The infected animal was not current with its vaccinations, but is responding favorably to treatment. All horse owners should consult with their local veterinarians and make a vaccination plan for their horses.

The virus is carried and transmitted by mosquitoes; although both horses and humans are susceptible, it is not directly contagious from horse to horse or from horse to human. Horse owners should work diligently to reduce the mosquito populations and their possible breeding areas, including removing stagnant water sources and using mosquito repellents. WNV is a reportable disease in Kansas, which means the law requires any confirmed case must be reported to the KDA Division of Animal Health.

The facility and all horses on the premises were placed under quarantine until further testing of all exposed horses was completed. Preliminary results indicate that there are additional horses testing positive. EIA is an untreatable disease and response actions are being made accordingly. The remaining horses at the facility that tested negative will be observed and retested in 60 days. The positive symptomatic horse did die from complications associated with EIA.KDA has identified a prescribed surveillance area within one-quarter mile of the affected premises and is working with local officials and horse owners to identify any other horses that may have been within that surveillance area.EIA does not affect people, but it can spread to horses, mules and donkeys. The virus can be transmitted from an infected equine to a “clean” equine by biting flies, the use of unsterilized or contaminated medical instruments, or through a blood transfusion. Clinical signs of EIA include fever, anemia and edema; however, affected horses may not show symptoms. EIA can be fatal in horses. All infected horses, including those which are asymptomatic, are carriers of the disease.There are typically a small number of cases of EIA in the United States every year, although the disease is common in other parts of the world. EIA is controlled in the U.S. by regular testing before traveling across state lines and/or exhibition. The test for EIA is commonly called a Coggins test. This spring, KDA expanded regulations to require a negative Coggins test be completed within the previous 12 months for horses that are changing ownership or are used for exhibition purposes. These regulations are in addition to the previous requirement of a negative Coggins test for horses entering Kansas.<h2>West Nile Virus</h2>The Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health has received notification of a confirmed case of West Nile virus (WNV) in a horse in Harper County.WNV is a virus that can infect humans, horses, birds and other species. Horses infected with WNV can have symptoms that range from depression, loss of appetite and fever to severe neurologic signs such as incoordination, weakness, inability to rise, and hypersensitivity to touch or sound. WNV can be fatal in horses. If you see symptoms of WNV in your horse, contact your veterinarian immediately.WNV is a preventable disease, with annual vaccinations that have proven highly effective. The infected animal was not current with its vaccinations, but is responding favorably to treatment. All horse owners should consult with their local veterinarians and make a vaccination plan for their horses.The virus is carried and transmitted by mosquitoes; although both horses and humans are susceptible, it is not directly contagious from horse to horse or from horse to human. Horse owners should work diligently to reduce the mosquito populations and their possible breeding areas, including removing stagnant water sources and using mosquito repellents. As we get close to the Geary County Commission making decisions on financial support, we are hearing a lot of questions about “what does the Historical Society do?” so, we’d love to tell you.

The Geary County Historical Society has been a proud part of Junction City and Geary County since 1972 when it was founded by a group of people hoping to save a historic building downtown. They ultimately failed in their mission, but over the years our organization has been instrumental in getting ground support behind preserving buildings like the Bartell House, the C.L. Hoover Opera House, the Spring Valley School site, Wetzel Cabin, St. Joseph’s Historic Church and of course our beloved museum building in the old Junction City High School/ Departmental Building, which was at risk of being turned into apartments before Fred Bramlage donated it to the Historical Society for restoration and preservation.

Six historic buildings are still in the care of the Geary County Historical Society.The museum staff is small; currently we only employ two full-time staff members and a part-time custodian. Prior to 2020, we had the privilege of having 3 full-time staff members and a part-time custodian, but as we’ve found our budget shrinking each year and costs rising, we have had to eliminate a position. Despite that, museum staff and volunteers are proud of the work we do.Annually, the Geary County Museum hosts between 5,000-6,000 visitors to our museum building. These numbers include school children on free school field trips, homeschool families looking for additional educational opportunities for their families, past-residents of our community looking to reminisce or donate a precious piece of their family history, and visitors from out of town who are either looking for a place to stop on the interstate and choose our town because there is a museum to visit, or who are visiting family stationed at Fort Riley looking to understand their loved one’s new community better. &nbsp;We were recognized as a “non-profit to know” in North Central Kansas in 2024. Exhibits within the museum rotate regularly, so there are new Geary County stories being told all the time. Past exhibits include&nbsp;Letters from Home, A Soldier’s Words;&nbsp;Healing Geary County, Geary County Doctors;&nbsp;The Year of the Soldier, an entire 3-floor museum display honoring our soldiers;&nbsp;SubMerged, Milford Dam and the History of Flooding; and dozens more. Current exhibits include the recently completed&nbsp;Missing Piece, Black history exhibit and&nbsp;Business Through the Ages.In the first half of 2&nbsp;&nbsp;In the first half of 2025 alone, we have had 2,900 visitors from 22 states and 3 different countries visit our museum, we have had 15 school field trips or presentations, we have hosted 16 Hands on History, STEAM Saturday or Homesteading 101 programs and we have held 7 events for the community, including History Alive! a reenactment weekend that nearly 1000 people attended from across the state.Along with front-facing work, museum staff also oversees the preservation of Geary County’s history. This includes thousands of photographs, dating back to the 1850 to the present; nearly 100,000 objects including military uniforms from our local military heroes, wedding dresses lovingly saved, the candy making tools from the Kaw Theater, the bar mirror from the original Bartell House, the counter top from the Peter Pan Grocery Store, items from local indigenous tribes, mammoth bones found in local rivers, Civil War weaponry, every Junction City High School yearbook printed since 1900, postcards, letters, and more. We hear so often that history is important, and we couldn’t agree more—that is what your hard-earned tax money is supporting: history!We are just as horrified as you by the recent news that the Fort Riley museums are at risk of closure—that is local history that will now be unavailable to the public to learn from. We are asking that you remember your outrage at that news and hold onto the belief that history is a vital part of our community as you consider the support of our organization when speaking with our commissioners and among our community.And if you haven’t visited us yet, it isn’t too late! We are located at 530 N. Adams (yes, that big building across from Subway). The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 1-4pm (mornings are kept open for school field trips, prep work, meetings and private tours). Starcke House is open for tour any day that the museum is open. Spring Valley Historic Site can be toured by appointment, or you are welcome to wander around the exteriors during daytime hours. St. Joseph’s Historic Church is a work in preservation progress, but it is also available to tour by appointment. We are so proud of the history of our community and the work we do to preserve and share it. We hope you will join us in feeling that pride.
