RILEY COUNTY —Police arrested four individuals from Fort Riley on Saturday night in Manhattan.

Just after 6:30p.m., police arrested 22-year-old Zachary Davis, 22, of Fort Riley in the 1400 block of Beechwood Terrace. &nbsp;Davis was arrested on requested charges of criminal threat, aggravated battery, and criminal damage to property. He is being held on a $16,000 bond, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Central National Bank raises funds for United Way 

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.4% in October. This is an increase from 3.3% in September and an increase from 2.6% in October 2023, according to a media release from the agency.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 200 from September. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 1,500 over the month, while government increased by 1,300.

The unemployment rate in Geary County is up slightly from 4.3 percent in September to 5.1 percent in October. The rate is also up in Riley, Wabaunsee and Pottatawomie counties.

“Job estimates for the private sector in Kansas have increased by 1.3% over the year, despite a small decline over the month in October,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “Nominal hourly earnings also experienced strong growth over the year, increasing by 5.1%.”

Since October 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 20,900. This change is due to an increase of 15,900 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,000 government jobs.

The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2024 Kia Telluride driven by&nbsp; Michael David Pilat, 57, St. George, was northbound on Blackjack Road and stopped at the stop sign at U.S. 24.

As the driver attempted to cross U.S. 24, an eastbound 2015 Nissan Versa driven by Awa Fanny&nbsp;Massounga Bora, 37, Manhattan, stuck the SUV.

EMS transported&nbsp;Massounga Bora to KU Medical Center.&nbsp;Pilat was not inured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The Geary County Board of Canvassers reviewed 706 provisional ballots on Friday morning.&nbsp; 

The Board of Canvassers recommended that 333 ballots be counted fully, two ballots be partially counted and 376 ballots not be counted.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to meet the four finalists for the position of City Manager from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 22 in the 2nd Floor Rehearsal Hall at the C.L. Hoover Opera House, 135 W. 7th Street.

During this reception, the public will have an opportunity to meet each of the finalists in an informal setting. 

The finalists were selected recently following a nationwide search that produced 26 candidates. Former Manager Gerry Vernon has been serving as Interim City Manager following the retirement of Allen Dinkel. 

The four finalists have been invited to participate in an on-site interview process scheduled for November 22-23. The two-day process includes a community tour, interview/engagement sessions with the Mayor and City Commission, City leadership, and City staff, as well as the community meet and greet.

Rose Beverly has over nine years of executive-level experience in the public sector. She currently serves as the City Administrator for the City of Berea, Kentucky with a population of 17,000. She provides oversite and guidance to 14 departments with 150 employees and a $31 million budget. Her achievements include the development of a Capital Improvements Program, the creation of a 10-year financial forecasting model to ensure sound fiscal policy, and completion of a pay and classification study to aid in employee hiring and retention. Ms. Rose also previously served as City Administrator to the City of Aitkin, Minnesota and as a County Commissioner to Butte County, Idaho. Ms. Beverly earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a minor in Sociology.

Randy Robertson is an experienced City/County Manager and a retired U.S. Army Officer. He has served as City Manager in Aberdeen, Maryland, with a population of 18,000 that employs 180 staff with a $32 million budget. Aberdeen is home to the Aberdeen Proving Ground, the Army’s largest research and technology platform. Mr. Robertson also served as City Manager in Cordova, Alaska; Vestavia Hills, Alabama; Mt. Juliet, Tennessee and Ashland, Kentucky. He also served as Chief of Staff, U.S, Army – White Sands Missile Range, NM, and Deputy Command/Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Second Signal Brigade, U.S. Army Europe. Mr. Robertson’s education includes three Master’s Degrees in Urban Planning, The John Hopkins University; Public Administration, Western Kentucky University; and Strategic Planning, U.S. Army War College.

Kim David Zimmerman has 30 years’ experience that includes twenty plus years as an active-duty logistics officer in the U.S. Army. He has also served as City Manager in Ridgway, Pennsylvania, and most recently Chief Administrator for the Borough of Lewistown, Pennsylvania with a population of 8,500 residents that employs 90 staff. Mr. Zimmerman was also the Operations Director, Privatized Military Housing at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. Mr. Zimmerman got his start in local government in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania, with a population of 4,100 residents that staffed 26 full-time and 50 part-time employees. Mr. Zimmerman has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (Biology) at Clarion University of Pennsylvania and Master of Science Degree (Geography and Regional Planning) at California University of Pennsylvania.

Blaine Oborn has over 20 years’ experience as a local government professional manager and over 38 years in government. Mr. Oborn most recently served as City Administrator in Oak Harbor, Washington with a population of 24,940, that staffs 185 employees, and a $60 million budget. He was also the City Administrator for the City of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, City of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and City of Ronceverte, West Virginia. Mr. Oborn was also a Village Administrator in Kronenwetter, Wisconsin. He is a credentialed city manager with the International City/County Management Association. Mr. Oborn holds a Master of Public Policy and Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University.

Mr. Robertson’s education includes three Master’s Degrees in Urban Planning, The John Hopkins University; Public Administration, Western Kentucky University; and Strategic Planning, U.S. Army War College. Kim David Zimmerman has 30 years’ experience that includes twenty plus years as an active-duty logistics officer in the U.S. Army. He has also served as City Manager in Ridgway, Pennsylvania, and most recently Chief Administrator for the Borough of Lewistown, Pennsylvania with a population of 8,500 residents that employs 90 staff. Mr. Zimmerman was also the Operations Director, Privatized Military Housing at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. Mr. Zimmerman got his start in local government in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania, with a population of 4,100 residents that staffed 26 full-time and 50 part-time employees. Mr. Zimmerman has earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (Biology) at Clarion University of Pennsylvania and Master of Science Degree (Geography and Regional Planning) at California University of Pennsylvania. Blaine Oborn has over 20 years’ experience as a local government professional manager and over 38 years in government. Mr. Oborn most recently served as City Administrator in Oak Harbor, Washington with a population of 24,940, that staffs 185 employees, and a $60 million budget. He was also the City Administrator for the City of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, City of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and City of Ronceverte, West Virginia. Mr. Oborn was also a Village Administrator in Kronenwetter, Wisconsin. He is a credentialed city manager with the International City/County Management Association. Mr. Oborn holds a Master of Public Policy and Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from California State University.

The First Infantry Division and Fort Riley will provide a flyover when the K-State football team arrives at Bill Snyder Family Stadium at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.&nbsp;

Before the game, Fort Riley and The First Infantry Division will showcase some Military equipment and have service members participating in pregame events.&nbsp;

Hoop Holler 'N Shoot free throw shooting contest finalists

TOPEKA – Humanities Kansas recently awarded $13,420 to the Black History Trail of Geary County in Junction City to support “Ninth Street and Its Demise through ‘Urban Renewal,’” a series of presentations and community discussions that explore the impacts of urban renewal on African American communities, with special focus on Ninth Street, a legendary Black business district in Junction City.

The Black History Trail of Geary County (BHT) was formed as an educational 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, with Jim Sands, retired city commissioner, as president, and Melanie Laster as project director. Many historical sites have been celebrated as a walking/driving trail, including churches, neighborhoods, a baseball stadium, and a VFW post.

Our next site to be recognized will be Ninth Street, the former Black business district that was “urban renewed” out of existence. Ninth Street has been the subject of a film and several books, but residents insist that there are many stories of Ninth Street still to be told.

Victor Luckerson, author of Built from the Fire, will be speaking in Junction City at the end of March to discuss the effects of urban renewal in the 60s and 70s. Built from the Fire goes into unparalleled depth on the history of Tulsa’s Greenwood District, marrying intimate family accounts of life in the neighborhood with rigorous academic research on the racist policies that buffeted Greenwood generation after generation. His awards include:

· 2023 Best Book of the Year by the New York Times and the Washington Post · Winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, the Museum of African American History’s Stone Book Award, and the Lillian Smith Book Award, the top prize for social justice writing in the U.S.

· Winner of the SABEW Best in Business Book Award and Outstanding Book on Oklahoma History from the Oklahoma Historical Society

Anyone with thoughts or memories of Junction City’s Ninth Street or the “urban renewal” that destroyed it is welcome to contact either James Sands, President, or Melanie Laster, Project Director, at the numbers listed above. The JC Breakfast Optimist Club will be having a fundraiser at JC’s BBQ &amp; Grill on Monday, November 18 from 11:00 AM until close.&nbsp; Ten percent of the purchases and donations made by customers will be returned to the club to support Geary County youth programs.&nbsp; Purchases from the restaurant may be made through Doordash, drive thru or in person dining.

The Optimists have increased their support of youth by providing monetary contributions to 16 different Geary County youth organizations; 3 scholarships and most recently established Junior Optimist International clubs at St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools and Junction City High School.&nbsp;

Manhattan, KS – In a moment of triumph for the Wildcat community, a one-of-a-kind banner that once graced the storied walls of Ahearn Fieldhouse has returned home after over five decades. Thanks to the dedication and passion of Bobby Sloan, SVP and Director of Marketing at Outdoor Bank, the banner was recently recovered following weeks of extensive research, negotiations, and careful handling. This unique, hand-painted piece prominently features Willie the Wildcat and bears witness to countless moments of school pride, sports triumphs, and even history itself.

The banner holds a special place in the hearts of Wildcats, having been present during some of the most memorable events in Ahearn Fieldhouse's history. Among these, the banner stood as a silent witness to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s final collegiate address before his tragic assassination in 1968—a moment that resonates deeply with both the Manhattan community and the broader national conversation.

 “Bringing this banner back to Manhattan is about more than just preserving a piece of history,” Sloan explained. “It’s about reuniting generations of Wildcats and celebrating the legacy that has defined Kansas State University for so many. This banner embodies the spirit of resilience, pride, and community that defines the Wildcat family.” 

Sloan, known for his role in leading Outdoor Bank’s commitment to community and connection, felt compelled to take on the search after hearing of the banner’s storied past. Fueled by his love for history and his determination to bring this relic home, Sloan embarked on a journey that spanned weeks, culminating in the banner’s return to Manhattan. The rediscovered piece represents more than memorabilia; it is a symbol of pride for alumni, students, and community members alike.

Lost banner from Ahearn Fieldhouse returned to Manhattan

Manhattan, KS – No Stone Unturned Foundation is proud to announce the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the new, state-of-the-art No Stone Unturned Therapeutic Learning Center, an integrated, collaborative therapy facility for children with a wide range of challenges, disabilities, and delays. The event will take place on Friday, November 15, 2024, at 4:30 pm, followed by a reception and tours of the facility. 

Since opening in its first location in 2012, No Stone Unturned has experienced significant growth year over year, demonstrating the immense need for specialized services for children of all abilities in Manhattan and surrounding communities. With over 200 children on the waiting list and no more space to grow, the No Stone Unturned Board of Directors determined a larger, customized, and multi-functional space was vital to not only meet the current needs but also increase the service offering. 

Members from the community, city officials, board members, donors, and vendors will join together in celebration with opening comments from Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Jason Smith, and appreciation remarks from Founder, Dr. Melinda Wolford.

“Through our own trials with our exceptional child, Stone, my family and I wanted to bring our gifts together to create a place where families could come for HOPE. A place where caregivers work tirelessly and lovingly to bring services to our community’s children in need. We are thankful for our village: Our therapists, supporters, board members, leadership teams, and volunteers who make No Stone Unturned a continued reality, and we are humbled and proud of what this new facility means for the future of the organization.” – Founder, Melinda Wolford stated. 

The $8M ”No Need Unmet” Capital Campaign is currently raising funds to complete payment of the new facility, located at 4761 Tuttle Creek Blvd. in Manhattan, KS. Construction began following the July 20, 2023, groundbreaking ceremony. The new facility boasts feeding kitchens, training restrooms, sensory gyms, private rooms, open treatment zones, group classrooms, large physical therapy and multi-function gyms, and much more. 

Kelly Keogh, Executive Director of the No Stone Foundation stated, “The new No Stone Unturned Pediatric Therapy Center is truly a blessing to Manhattan and all the surrounding communities. Our current center has seen children from over 25 counties in Kansas, as it is a truly unique model of collaborative care. The new facility boasts feeding kitchens, training restrooms, sensory gyms, private rooms, open treatment zones, group classrooms, large physical therapy and multi-function gyms, and much more. Kelly Keogh, Executive Director of the No Stone Foundation stated, “The new No Stone Unturned Pediatric Therapy Center is truly a blessing to Manhattan and all the surrounding communities. Our current center has seen children from over 25 counties in Kansas, as it is a truly unique model of collaborative care. The Kansas American Legion Turkey Run will be at Fort Riley this Saturday, Nov. 16. 

The Turkey Run has provided turkeys and traditional sides for Thanksgiving meals to more than 250 Soldiers and Families. 

The Turkey Run will be at the Soldier Recovery Unit Clamshell at 675 McGinnis Way, and it will be from 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m.

Veterans and supporters of the Kansas American Legion distribute food items for Thanksgiving meals to eligible Soldiers and their families identified through various installation programs. 

The Kansas American Legion, Kansas American Legion Riders, and Kansas American Legion Auxiliary have partnered with the Fort Riley Soldier and Family Assistance Center since 2008 for the turkey run. American Legion posts across the state collect the meal items on behalf of service members at Fort Riley.

TOPEKA — The state suicide and crisis hotline received a record number of calls a day following the election, with LGBTQ+ and Spanish-speaking lines seeing especially high traffic.

Vibrant, the mental health company that administers Kansas’ 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, reported a one-day call record of 169 calls on Nov. 6, said ​​Cara Sloan-Ramos, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services.

The largest increases in call volumes occurred on the LGBTQ+ and Spanish lines, Sloan-Ramos said.

President-elect Donald Trump has promised upon taking office a crackdown on immigration, especially undocumented Mexican and Latin and Central American immigrants, through mass deportation. Plus, GOP gains in the Kansas Legislature open up&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/02/02/anti-lgbtq-bills-introduced-in-kansas-legislature-are-political-bullying-tactic-activists-say/">new opportunities</a>&nbsp;for anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

“One of the things we know about suicide and suicidal behavior is that it is rarely connected to one circumstance but instead is most often a result of multiple factors, so correlation doesn’t exactly indicate causation,” Sloan-Ramos said in an email.

The statewide hotline received an average of 67 calls per day in November 2023 and about 53 calls daily in November 2022, according to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.khi.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/988-Broad-State-Metrics-Report__KS_NA_to_2024-02-29.pdf" target="_blank">da</a><a href="https://www.khi.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/988-Broad-State-Metrics-Report__KS_2022-01-01_to_2023-01-31.pdf" target="_blank">ta</a>&nbsp;from Vibrant. The LGBTQ+ line, which launched in July 2023, received an average of six calls per day in its first eight months of operation. Average call volumes on the Spanish-speaking line are even lower, at about one call per day, according to 2023 metrics.

Vibrant offers tips for coping with election stress on its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.vibrant.org/coping-with-election-stress/" target="_blank">website</a>.

“When feelings of anxiety occur due to major national, regional, or community events like elections, it can exacerbate other anxieties people may be having that are not necessarily related to that event,” said an Oct. 17 blog post from Vibrant. “Memories of anxiety may also be triggered by such events, adding to current stress.”

Some tips include seeking social support, sticking to routines and balancing election-related media consumption.

The Geary County Commission will convene as the County Board of Canvassers on Friday, November 15, at 9:00 a.m. in the Geary County Office Building, Commission Chambers, Room 127, to canvass the results of the General Election held on November 5, 2024.

706 provisional ballots need to be reviewed from the General Election.&nbsp;

Two races in Geary County were too close to call on Election night. The Provisional ballots could decide the winner. The two races are Geary County Commission District Two and Geary County Sheriff.&nbsp;

Four Lady Jay Volleyball players receive League Honors

MANHATTAN — The&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://mccain.k-state.edu/">McCain&nbsp;Performance Series</a>&nbsp;presents the Flint Hills Children's Choir at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4. Under the direction of Janie Brokenicky, the choir is celebrating its 10th anniversary season and will present "Happy Holidays from the Little Apple," featuring members of Bates Dance Studios, the Manhattan Youth Symphony, Bryan Pinkall. Dave Lewis will serve as master of ceremonies.

The Flint Hills Children's Choir provides excellence in choral music instruction and performance for children and enrichment in the arts for the Manhattan and surrounding communities. Based in Manhattan, the choir was founded in 2015 by longtime colleagues and friends Janie Brokenicky and Janet Armstead.

The first choir, composed of 28 fifth- through ninth-grade singers, quickly expanded to two treble-voiced choirs spanning grades three to 10. With membership now at more than 100 students, the singers represent the communities&nbsp; of&nbsp;Clay Center,&nbsp;Manhattan,&nbsp;Olsburg,&nbsp; &nbsp;Riley,&nbsp;Saint George,&nbsp;Wamego&nbsp;and&nbsp;Westmoreland. Flint Hills Children's Choir is open to students from any community and educational background. Scholarships are available to families with financial need, thanks to sponsor generosity.

Flint Hills Children's Choir to perform at McCain Performance Series

RILEY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 6:30a.m. Wednesday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a 2018 Jeep Cherokee driven by Akeema Jones-Greene crossed the center line&nbsp;at the corner of Marlatt Avenue and Matter Drive.

The Jeep&nbsp;was traversing into oncoming traffic. Alec Marenco swerved his 2019 GMC Sierra to avoid the oncoming vehicle but Jones-Greene corrected back to her lane and the two vehicles collided head-on. 

EMS transported Marenco to Via Christ for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.
