Wayne W. Erichsen - 1947 - 2022

Patty “Pat” Joan Erickson, age 86 of Leonardville, passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2022 at the Leonardville Nursing Home.&nbsp;

She was born on August 26, 1936 in Manhattan, the daughter of Floyd Thomas and Elsie Alice (Henton) Hohman. She graduated from Randolph High School in 1954.&nbsp;

On August 14, 1955 in Topeka, she was married to Jerald Edwin Erickson. They celebrated 64 years of marriage before Jerry’s passing in 2019.&nbsp;

In high school, Pat worked at Beckman’s General Store in old Randolph. It was there that stories were later told about Jerry frequenting the store to buy bread just to see Pat. After marriage, Pat learned what it took to be a dairy farmer’s wife. Pat and Jerry ran Erickson’s Short Stop in Randolph. She later worked parttime for Siefert’s clothing in Manhattan, Ginger’s boutique in Clay Center and at Central Office in Clay Center. She was a member of the Walsburg Lutheran Church.&nbsp;

Patty is survived by three daughters, Joyce Graham and husband Phil of Manhattan, Karla Buchanan and husband Buck of Leonardville and Lora Brobst and husband Bryce of Hiawatha; seven grandchildren, Jason Graham (Emily), Erika Graham, Lee Buchanan (Ann), Dustin Buchanan (Traci), Megan Brobst, Lindsy Long (Josh) and Molly Spire (Cody) and eleven great grandchildren, Brody Buchanan, Clay Buchanan, Adelyn Buchanan, Payton Selby, Landyn Brobst, Ryker Massey, Amara Brobst, Kevin Long, Charlie Long, Kinsley Spire and Benjamin Spire.

In addition to her husband Jerry, she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Russell, Stanley, Gail and Robert Hohman, and three sisters, Gladys Floberg, Murle Easterberg and Juanita Kline.&nbsp;

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 12, 2022 at the Leonardville City Cemetery with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating.&nbsp;

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Walsburg Lutheran Church. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes- Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Patty “Pat” Joan Erickson

Raymond L. Lindquist, age 95, of Waterville, passed away on Thursday, September 1, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

Ray was born August 28, 1927, on a farm near Waterville.&nbsp; His parents were Albin H. and Estella P. (Bergeson) Lindquist.&nbsp; He graduated from Waterville High School with the class of 1945.&nbsp; A few months after graduation and few weeks before his eighteenth birthday, he joined the US Navy serving in the Pacific Theater of WWII. On June 12, 1949 Ray married Dorothy J. Clark at her parent’s home in Barnes.&nbsp;

After the war Ray attended Kansas State University for a year.&nbsp; He then taught at the Harbaugh Country School. Ray went on to graduate from Kansas State University in 1960.&nbsp; After teaching he went to work with his cousin Ken in a construction company they owned together.&nbsp; In 1972 Ray and Dorothy purchased the Waterville Lumber Company which he operated until his retirement in 1992 when his son Randy took over.

Ray was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church where he served on the Church Council, Springer Post 332 of the American Legion in Waterville for over seventy years, the Masons Sutton Lodge #85 of the A.F.&amp;A.M. in Waterville, also for over seventy years, the Waterville Lions Club, Waterville Chamber of Commerce and he had served on the Waterville City Council and as the Mayor.&nbsp; He also had served as on the Fire Department for over thirty years.

Ray loved his town and was always ready and willing to do his part.&nbsp; In addition to all the other things he did for Waterville, he was proud that he helped build the Lipton Ball Fields.&nbsp; He enjoyed wood working, playing golf, going to K-State Football games and having “coffee” with his friends at the Corner Store.&nbsp; He loved to travel; Ray and Dorothy had visited all fifty states and Europe.&nbsp;

Survivors include his wife Dorothy, his son Randy (Theresa) Lindquist of Hanover, two grandsons, Chris and Matt and a great grandson, Jonathan.

Preceding Ray in death&nbsp;were his parents and a sister Virginia Hubbard.

A visitation will be held between 6:00 and 8:00 pm, on Wednesday, at Christie-Anderes Funeral Home in Waterville.

A Memorial Service is planned for 10:30 am, Thursday, September 8, 2022,&nbsp;at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Waterville, with Pastor Berniece Ludlum.&nbsp; Inurnment with Military Honors will be at Riverside Cemetery in Waterville.

David Wayne Absmeier, 66 died September 4, 2022 in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; He was born on January 16, 1956 in Holyoke, CO, the son of Carl J. and Patricia (Carpenter) Absmeier.&nbsp; David was raised in the Holyoke community and was a graduate of Holyoke High School.&nbsp; He earned a bachelor’s degree from Adams State University.&nbsp; David married Cindy Real, they later divorced but remained close friends.&nbsp; David worked as a retail manager for ACE Hardware in Eaton, CO before moving to Clay Center in 2018.&nbsp;&nbsp; He was a member of the NRA and IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) and participated in many of their competitive shooting competitions.&nbsp; David was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia Main; brothers, Steve, Jeff and Carl F. Absmeier.&nbsp; He was a loving grandfather and will be missed by family and friends.

David Wayne Absmeier

Roberta Mae Horner, 85 of Gardner, Kansas died on Friday September 2, 2022 at the Vintage Park of Gardner.&nbsp; She was born on May 29, 1937 in Wakefield, the daughter of Walter Francis and Leona Pearl (Bryant) Weir.

Roberta grew up in Wakefield and graduated from Wakefield High School.&nbsp; She married Leo Raymond Horner on June 5, 1955 and the couple made their home in Junction City before moving back to Wakefield in 1969.&nbsp; Roberta worked for Whittaker Cable as an administrative assistant, was the editor for the Wakefield Sun and an admissions clerk for Clay County Medical Center.&nbsp;

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, camping, traveling with her sister and family dinners on Sunday.&nbsp; Roberta was a member of the Madura Congregational Church and sang in the choir.&nbsp; She was also a member of the Rebekah’s Lodge. Leo preceded her in death in 1997. She is also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Diana Russell; granddaughter, Christina Livingston; brother, David Weir and sister, Jean Leonard.

Anthony "Tony" Straub, 76 died September 2, 2022, in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; He was born on July 3, 1946, in Wamego, the son of Otto and Arleen (Immenschuh) Straub.&nbsp; Tony was a graduate of CCCHS class of 1966.&nbsp; He married Barbara Moody on July 1, 1967.&nbsp; Tony worked for Oetinger Lloyd Construction, Simmons Construction, Chester-Brown Beams and at the Steve Peterson hog farm.&nbsp; He was a member of the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department at Gering, NE. Anthony "Tony" Straub

Richard Leroy Taylor “Dick”, 84, of Miltonvale gained his heavenly wings on August 30, 2022, at his daughter’s home in Minneapolis, KS after a short bout with cancer.

Dick was born June 7, 1938, in Oak Hill to George Washington Taylor and Myrtle Sophie (Lindquist) Taylor, the third of four boys. He worked for Skinners Chevrolet then later for the Mobil Station, mostly delivering fuel to farmers via the tank wagon. He appreciated farming and raising cattle on the land that two previous generations farmed. Dick was an exceptional mechanic and could fix almost anything. He enjoyed restoring old ford tractors, volunteering with the fire department (in his younger years) and was great pool player.

He married Elaine LaVoie August 16, 1959. Two children were born to this union, Pamela Ann (Taylor) Harder and Kevan Todd Taylor. They later divorced. He married Elsie Malik May 26, 1976, and together they had one son Richard Leroy Taylor Jr “Richie”.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Chester, Warren, and Larry Taylor, and his wife Elsie. He is survived by his three children, Pam (Kent) Harder of Minneapolis, Kevan Taylor of Colby, and Richie Taylor of Oak Hill, grandchildren Tiffany (Brett) Speaks of Prairie Village, Brandon Harder of Minneapolis, and Torey (Tera) Taylor of Shawnee, great-grandchildren Ryan Harder, Bradley Speaks and Kate Speaks.

Services will be held at Phelps Funeral Home, Miltonvale, KS on Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at 10:00 a.m.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m ., Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at Phelps Funeral Home.

Richard Leroy Taylor “Dick”

Ellouise A. Marshall was born June 2, 1942 in Concordia, Kansas the daughter of Harold and Pearl (Lawrence) Demars. She passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2022 at the Memorial Hospital in Abilene. Ellouise graduated from Concordia High School and received her bachelor’s degree in Education from Kansas State University and served in the military from 1961 to 1962. On March 2, 1963, she married Norris Marshall in Ft. Rucker, Alabama. Ellouise was a bookkeeper for the Alida CO-OP in Chapman and then was the Office Manager for Chip Edwards Insurance Company in Chapman. She enjoyed quilting, antiquing, and reading, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband Norris of the home, son Jody Marshall and his wife Katherine of Gardner, Kansas, daughter Jacqueline Basham and her husband Brian of Aurora, Missouri, sister Dianne LaBonte of Aurora, Kansas, 6 grandchildren Marshall Basham, Everett Basham, Nathaniel Basham, Brody Marshall, Lily Marshall, Eleanor Marshall, and one great grandchild Emery Basham. She was preceded in death by her parents. The family has selected cremation. Mary Kay (Buchanan) Graves, 77, passed away peacefully at her home in Chapman on Saturday, September 3. She was born on January 20, 1945, in Olustee, OK, to Paul and Mayme Ruth (Norris) Buchanan. As a child living across the Red River Valley in Oklahoma, Texas, and Arkansas, Kay developed a love of nature, gardening, painting, horseback riding, and spending time with family, especially her maternal grandmother, “Mamaw.”

Upon graduation from Duke High School (OK) in 1963, Kay attended Altus Junior College and Southwest Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She taught for several years in the Lakin (KS) school district, where she met the love of her life, Herbert Russell Graves, Jr. They married on July 20, 1968, in Eldorado, OK. Together, they lovingly raised two children, Russell Wayne (Tammy) of Kansas City, MO, and Cynthia Dlynn Markley (Chad) of Abilene.

Kay served for 30 years as a 4-H Superintendent at the Central Kansas Free Fair, 20 years as a board member of the Chapman Housing Authority, and 10 years as the leader of the Chapman Shamrocks 4-H Club. She was also a lifelong member of the Chapman VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She also operated an arts and crafts store in Frankfort (KS) and Mayme’s Cottage in Abilene with her daughter. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers, Herbert and Eddie Wayne Buchanan, her brothers-in-law Thomas and David Graves, and sisters-in-law Carol Kirkbride, Barbara Steppe, Myra Buchanan, and Lavonda Hurlbut.

Everyone that met Kay instantly recognized her dedication and love for her family, feisty personality, sharp wit, and determination to always put forth her best effort in every pursuit. Her family loves their wife, mom, and Aunt Kay very much and she will be dearly missed.

Mary Kay (Buchanan) Graves

Vonda Mae Brockman, age 93, died August 30, 2022, at Advena Living of Clay Center.

Born September 11, 1928, in Manhattan, Vonda was the devoted daughter of Lloyd T. and Ona Mae (Vail) Johnson. While she spent much of her lifetime in Manhattan, Vonda was also fond of the time she lived in both California and Lawrence during her youth, followed by Clay Center in her final years.

Vonda graduated from Manhattan High School and attended Kansas State University. She was taking classes toward a teaching degree until she met Carl Brockman, whom she married on August 22, 1948. They later divorced, but shared the joy of their four children: Karla, Michael, Rebecca and Kraig.

She was very devoted to her family and would go to great lengths to do anything and everything for her children, and in later years, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. All babies in the family enjoyed the “Doodly-Doo” and “Playmate” songs Vonda sang to them, and at the age of 15, her grandchildren were each given the gift of travel, taking a trip with “Grandma Voni” to the place of their choosing in the continental U.S.

Vonda also served as a grandparent of sorts to many Manhattanites whom she taught and reared in her home daycare for 20 years. She was also well known for her love of cooking and her green thumb, and was a member of the Garden Club and the First Christian Church.

Survivors include her four children: Karla Brockman of St. Joseph, MO; Michael Brockman and his wife Karla of Kansas City, MO; Rebecca Johnson and her husband Larry of Manhattan; and Kraig Brockman and his wife Sara of Clay Center, KS; 10 grandchildren: Anna Brockman, Melanie Fender (Todd), and Karissa Brockman; Nicole Wang (Clifford), Brent Nelson, Laurence Johnson, Lauren Froggatte (Calvin), Kari Stratton (Shawn), Emily Brockman (Sally Nietfeld), and Andrew Brockman (Jessica); and 17 great-grandchildren: Sean, Josh, Chasely and Ruby Fender; Ellery and Ansley Wang; Finn, Liam and Lilly Nelson; Russell Froggatte; Tegan, Jael and Abram Stratton; Ori and Ellis Brockman; and Veronica and Rhett Brockman.

Vonda was preceded in death by one grandchild, Jacob Johnson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 6th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan.

Vonda Mae Brockman

Dr. Verlyn Duane Richards passed away on August 30th, 2022 at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his lifetime partner of sixty years, Dr. Eugene “Gene’ Laughlin; brother, E.W. “Fritz” Richards; brother, Anthony “Tony” Leister; sister, Florence Gebhart; and nieces, Jeanne Pohlman and Joanne Pridey.

Born in Bavaria, Kansas on March 4, 1933 to the late Clifford Wesley and Minnie (Henry) Richards, Verlyn grew up in Culver and graduated from Culver High School in 1951. He went on to earn a B.S. in Accounting in 1956 and an M.S. in Finance-Accounting in 1960 from Kansas State University. He received his CPA certification in 1961, followed by a Ph.D. in Finance in 1967 from the University of Illinois, where he held a graduate teaching assistantship. During college he was an Army ROTC cadet and served in the Army Reserves for the following eight years.

His experience with a graduate teaching assistantship led Verlyn to realize that education was his true calling, and for nearly thirty years he enjoyed a distinguished career as a finance professor and department head in the College of Business Administration at K-State in Manhattan, Kansas. The instrumental role he played in forming the placement service for the Financial Management Association was a testament to his commitment to his profession, and he will be remembered fondly by colleagues and students alike.

After retiring in 1993, Verlyn was excited to have more time to indulge his interest in nature and history by serving on the board of directors for the Friends of Sunset Zoo and Friends of Konza Prairie. He graduated from the Konza Environmental Education Program docent training course in 1999 and found great joy in teaching others about the area’s history, geology, and famous bison herd.

Verlyn and his partner, Gene, shared an appreciation for the arts and actively supported several local cultural institutions. Longtime sponsors of the Hale Library Concert Series and the Friends of McCain Performance Series, they also served for many years on the board of directors at McCain Auditorium and the Manhattan Public Library.

Verlyn and Gene were also natural athletes and loved the outdoors. In the 1960s and 70s they delighted in taking friends and family out on their boat to water ski at Kanopolis Lake and Tuttle Creek Lake. In the 80s they took up downhill skiing in Colorado, where friends and family often stayed with them at their condominium in Avon and joined them on the slopes at nearby Beaver Creek Ski Resort. In later years, they took up bicycling and participated in the annual 500-mile “Biking Across Kansas” ride, as well as numerous other cycling trips throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Ever the avid travelers, they ultimately favored a less strenuous—but no less adventurous—mode of travel on cruise ships. Their journeys included a 60-day circumnavigation of South America to visit the South Pole, an educational Alaska cruise, several trans-Atlantic voyages to England, and three four-month world cruises. While they often traveled with friends from home, they also made new friends all over the world.

Somehow they always found time to visit family: for football and basketball games, graduations, holidays, birthdays, and all manner of celebrations. One of the most memorable such celebrations was an 80th birthday party for Verlyn and his fraternal twin brother, the late Fritz Richards, in March of 2013. Family and friends came from far and wide to share cake, conversation, and an all-around good time with the brothers at the home of their late niece Jeanne Pohlman in Olathe.

Verlyn was able to combine his love of family with his interest in history by pursuing genealogy as a hobby. His remarkable investigative skills helped him trace his matrilineal line back to eighteenth-century Belgium. In 2006 he traveled to Patignies to visit a memorial dedicated to his great-great granduncle Joseph Jean Henry, a founder of the Society of Freethinkers who helped organize the Meeting of Patignies and assisted in The Internal Workingman’s Congress in Brussels in 1868. On that same trip, Verlyn traveled to Gedinne, near the French border, where he had discovered that descendants of another great-great granduncle were living, and enjoyed a festive family reunion with these newly discovered cousins.

He is survived by nephews Jack W. Richards and wife, Susan; Robert Richards and wife, Kristie; Randy Pohlman; Roger Pridey; nieces Jeannie Stevens and husband, Dale; Kay Laubhan and husband, Vern; Karen Perry and husband, Jim; twelve great nieces and nephews, and eleven great- grandnieces and grandnephews.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by each and every one for his cheerful personality, his generous spirit, and his kind heart.

Public visitation and reception will be held on Sunday, September 11, 2-4 p.m. at Meadowlark Hills. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

Dr. Verlyn Duane Richards

John Howard Schlup, age 98, of Manhattan, died August 29, 2022, at Meadowlark Hills – Wroten House.

He was born the son of Walter Albert and Lena Esther (Morse) Schlup on September 24, 1923, in Elmdale, Kansas. While attending high school, he lived at and worked on his aunt and uncle’s (Elmer and Alice Sjogren) farm in Concordia, Kansas. He continued close ties to the Sjogren family throughout his life. In 1944 he returned to Emporia to begin working with the Santa Fe Railroad as a freight clerk and a dock foreman until his retirement in 1983. Throughout this time, he worked in Emporia, Osawatomie, Kansas City, and Topeka.

On January 1, 1946, in Topeka, Kansas, he married Wanda Louise Pratt. They started raising their two children in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1966 they moved to Tonganoxie, Kansas, and established Jawnacre Farm. Following retirement, John and Wanda were longtime residents of Lawrence, Kansas. After Wanda’s death in 2010, he moved to Manhattan in 2011 to be near his son’s family.

John raised registered Shorthorn cattle beginning in 1958. He shared his love of raising cattle with his son and daughter through various 4-H projects. He was active as a club leader and project leader in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties. During his retirement, he continued to show his cattle in various venues including the American Royal cattle show. He continued to assist young men and women in their beef projects and introducing them to the Shorthorn breed. John was an active member of both the Kansas Shorthorn Association and American Shorthorn Association.

Upon their retirements, John and Wanda enjoyed square dancing and round dancing. They participated with their local clubs in Tonganoxie and Lawrence for more than 20 years.

After moving to Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, John enjoyed a number of social activities including attending summer music concerts in City Park, card games with friends, and Monday night bingo games to maintain his supply of cookies. He assisted with setting up for Sunday worship services and distributing the Meadowlark Messenger each week. He valued the new friendships he built at Meadowlark Hills, especially that with Marla Bugbee (who proceeded him in death).

Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Brown of Denver, CO; a son, John Robert Schlup and his wife, Jody, longtime Manhattan residents recently moved to Dana Point, CA; and three grandchildren, Jackie Schlup of Plano, TX, Jim Schlup and his wife Devon of San Diego, CA, and Jason Schlup and his wife Susie of Annandale, VA.

John was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey Fellman, and his five brothers: Floyd, Richard, Dale, Theodore, and Victor.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 6th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan, Kansas, 1616 Poyntz Ave. The service will begin at 2 pm with a reception following.

In 1944 he returned to Emporia to begin working with the Santa Fe Railroad as a freight clerk and a dock foreman until his retirement in 1983. Throughout this time, he worked in Emporia, Osawatomie, Kansas City, and Topeka.On January 1, 1946, in Topeka, Kansas, he married Wanda Louise Pratt. They started raising their two children in Kansas City, Kansas. In 1966 they moved to Tonganoxie, Kansas, and established Jawnacre Farm. Following retirement, John and Wanda were longtime residents of Lawrence, Kansas. After Wanda’s death in 2010, he moved to Manhattan in 2011 to be near his son’s family.John raised registered Shorthorn cattle beginning in 1958. He shared his love of raising cattle with his son and daughter through various 4-H projects. He was active as a club leader and project leader in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties. During his retirement, he continued to show his cattle in various venues including the American Royal cattle show. He continued to assist young men and women in their beef projects and introducing them to the Shorthorn breed. John was an active member of both the Kansas Shorthorn Association and American Shorthorn Association.Upon their retirements, John and Wanda enjoyed square dancing and round dancing. They participated with their local clubs in Tonganoxie and Lawrence for more than 20 years.After moving to Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, John enjoyed a number of social activities including attending summer music concerts in City Park, card games with friends, and Monday night bingo games to maintain his supply of cookies. He assisted with setting up for Sunday worship services and distributing the Meadowlark Messenger each week. He valued the new friendships he built at Meadowlark Hills, especially that with Marla Bugbee (who proceeded him in death).Survivors include a daughter, Bonnie Brown of Denver, CO; a son, John Robert Schlup and his wife, Jody, longtime Manhattan residents recently moved to Dana Point, CA; and three grandchildren, Jackie Schlup of Plano, TX, Jim Schlup and his wife Devon of San Diego, CA, and Jason Schlup and his wife Susie of Annandale, VA.John was preceded in death by his sister, Audrey Fellman, and his five brothers: Floyd, Richard, Dale, Theodore, and Victor.A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 6th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan, Kansas, 1616 Poyntz Ave. The service will begin at 2 pm with a reception following.Memorial contributions may be made to either the Kansas 4-H Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association, sent in care of the funeral home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS, 66502.

Lois Marie (Graves) Lewis, age 99, of Manhattan, died August 27, 2022, at Homestead Assisted Living in Manhattan.

She was born December 4, 1922, in Skiddy, Kansas, 13 miles south of Junction City, the daughter of Archie Reed and Bertha Caroline (Popejoy) Graves.

Lois graduated from Manhattan High School and later earned her nursing degree from Manhattan Area Vo-Tech.

She was married to Paul D. Lewis on November 27, 1946, in Manhattan.

Lois worked as a nurse at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Manhattan and at Irwin-Army Hospital at Fort Riley. For many years she was in charge of lunch at Eugene Field Grade School and had also cleaned the Presbyterian Church.

She helped Dr. Bascom start the first hospice program in Manhattan, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and AARP. She was a true caregiver, willing to help anyone in need. Most of all Lois was devoted to her family, loved spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and playing the organ. She also loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor.

Lois was a longtime member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, volunteering for funeral dinners and working in their Budget Shop. She was a member of the Kansas Authors Club, writing many stories, two were published, and several books which she bound with her husband Paul.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband Paul on April 10, 2005. She was also preceded in death by two sons: Warren Reed “Tyker” Lewis in 1977 and by Kerry Foster Lewis in 2021; and by two siblings: Evelyn Reese and William “Bill” Graves.

Survivors include her three daughters: Gail Burd of Manhattan, Julia Warner and her husband Jeff of Strong City, KS, and Frances Lucas and her husband Bruce of Heath, OH; three siblings: Alice Persyn of Leavenworth, KS. Bernis Parker of Manhattan, and Gladys Sedam of Manhattan; and nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was looking forward to her first great-great grandchild to be born soon.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 7th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jay Bessmer officiating. Interment will follow in the Riley Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.

How do you sum up the life of someone who would pick you up from school in a red mustang, red lipstick, and dressed like Jackie O., who lived in a small farming community but showed up to work in heels...

Jeanette was the epitome of class and grace and taught those around her to hold their heads high and was a mother and grandmother to all. She toggled party lines but was always thoughtful and decisive in her decisions. She was the first and leading feminist in her family and did so with grit and determination. While these words will not do her justice, we hope she approves.

Jeanette Vaught Gibson, 86, of Alma, left this earth on August 31, 2022. She was born December 27, 1935, in Anadarko, OK to Bud and Pearl Vaught, along with her twin sister Jeanelle. She was lucky enough to live through her twinship in the embryo. She was the youngest of five children.

She was the mother to Rise Diane, Kathleen Roxanne, Terry Lee, and William Buck, and stepmother to Debra Kaye, Rick Dean, and Rondal Scott. They moved to WaKeeney, KS in December 1969, and she was a schoolteacher there for 35 years. She loved golfing, playing gin and bridge with friends, and gardening. She enjoyed traveling across the United States to visit her sisters. Some of their most enjoyable years were spent having barbecues poolside with friends and family.

In 2008 Jeanette and Harold retired full-time to Lake Wabaunsee where they made numerous friends.

She continued to golf, spend time with her friends and family, tended her garden and rose bushes, and fully enjoyed a well-deserved retirement. In her free time, she also loved painting and writing.

&nbsp;She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bernard, her sisters Barbara and LaVerne, the love of her life, Harold, her beautiful daughters Kathleen and Debbie, and her son Scott.

&nbsp;She is survived by her daughter Rise, her sons Terry (Dona), William, and Rick (Kandi), 11 Grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and her handsome, tuxedo-wearing cat, Jack.

Mary Catherine Brunk, resident of Alma, KS passed away in her home on Monday, August 29th, 2022, at the age of 76.

Mary is survived by her children; Steve Buero, Kenny Buero, Christine Yoakum, Mikey Buero, and Michelle Patwell; (12) Grandchildren, (5) Great Grandchildren. Mother-in-law, she was predeceased by her son Jeffrey Buero, late husband Michael Brunk, and Mother Mary Harsh.

Mary was born in Tubingen, Germany on November 15th, 1945, she became a US citizen in 1957 residing in West Allis WI., where she was a waitress and bakery manager at Moyers bakery until 1976, then moving her family to California.&nbsp; &nbsp;Mary enjoyed spending her time with her grandkids and gardening.&nbsp; Mary and Mike moved to Alma, KS in 2011.&nbsp; They enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching the sunrise and sunset on their porch.&nbsp;

He was born June 26, 1936, in Alliance, Neb., the first child of John and Corinne (McNare) Wright. Following high school graduation in 1954, he attended Chadron (Neb.) State College before transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he received his B.A. in business in 1958. He served three years in the Navy as a supply officer and then moved to New York City where he worked in business and finance. In his last job he compiled the Best Sellers List for The New York Times.

John is survived by his sister Penny (Norris) Wika of Wamego, his sister-in-law Cleo Wright of Lincoln, Neb., two nephews, five AFS nephews and numerous great nephews and great nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Wright. John requested that no funeral service be held. He will be buried in Drexel Hill, Pa., where he owned property for many years.

The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity of the donor’s choice and may be sent in care of Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

Dorothy Parry received her gift of eternal life on August 27, 2022, surrounded by her children at her home in Morganville, Kansas.

Dorothy was born on the family farm South of Palmer, KS on January 22, 1927, to Emil and Emma (Meyer) Ohlde. She enjoyed her childhood on the farm with her older brother, Elmer, and older sisters, Edna and Florence.&nbsp; She was baptized on January 30, 1927, and later confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Palmer, KS. She attended St John’s Lutheran School and later the Wichita Business College in Wichita, KS. After completing her schooling, she worked at Union State Bank in Clay Center.

On December 4, 1949, she married Floyd Parry. They started their married life on a farm South of Clay Center and in 1956 moved to a farm North of Morganville. In 1983 they moved to their five acre beautifully landscaped property in Morganville. Dorothy was a wise, patient mother to her eight children and a hard-working partner to Floyd on the farm. In addition to caring for her family, she drove a school bus route and an overnight mail route for the post office - sometimes both on the same day.

She lived her life centered around her Christian faith. She was a faithful, active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center. Over the years she taught Midweek school, Sunday school, Vacation Bible school and was a member of Friendship Circle. She was a good friend to her neighbors and an involved member of her community and her local Lions Club. Dorothy enjoyed flower gardening. Her park-like yard has been the location of the Easter egg hunts in Morganville since 1985. She always used the Easter egg hunts to share the message, ‘He is Risen.’

Dorothy’s home in Morganville was the perfect place for many family gatherings, where all family and friends felt welcomed and loved. She always remembered the birth dates, baptism dates, and wedding anniversaries of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had a closet full of dress-up play clothes, toys, and a playhouse in the back yard for the children. Dorothy genuinely enjoyed visiting with family, friends, and neighbors.

Dorothy was preceded in death by husband, Floyd; son, Curt; son-in-law, Layne Harris; sister, Edna, and her husband Gerhard Wiemers; brother, Elmer, and his wife, Mabel; and sister, Florence, and her husband, Ted Meyer.

She is survived by her children, Carol (Virgil) Gordon, Coleen (Paul) Sallee, Clarice (Royce) Ohlde, Craig (Terri) Parry, Cathy (Jim) Jones, Chris Bullard, Clay (Kelly) Parry, daughter-in-law Mary Parry, 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy dedicated her life to her Lord and her family. She will be missed by her family and friends, but we take comfort in knowing she will be wrapped in the love of Christ for all eternity.

Kenneth L. Girard, age 83, entered into rest on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at the Good Shepherd Homecare &amp; Hospice, Manhattan, Kansas. He was born on June 24, 1939 in Vermillion, South Dakota to Alphonse and Delma (Ribordy) Girard.

He was a 1957 graduate of Clyde High School, Clyde, Kansas.&nbsp; He then received his degree as a Master Barber from the Kansas School of Barbering. He owned and operated his own barber shop in the Ogden Community.

Kenneth joined the United States Army in 1961 at Ft. Hood Texas and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War.&nbsp; At Ft. Hood Texas he was a combat medic in the Armor Division. After returning home he continued his service with the US Army National Guard until his honorable discharge in 1967.&nbsp;

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Ogden, Kansas; The Jolly Mixers Dance Club; American Legion and VFW of Manhattan where he served as past post commander of Post #1786; Also a lifetime member of Abate of Kansas District # 15.

Kenneth hobbies included dancing, billiards, and dumpster diving looking for treasures.&nbsp; He loved riding his motorcycle and made the long ride to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally more than 28 times.

Kenneth is survived by his two sons, Lance Girard, Lago Vista, TX; Todd Girard, Lago Vista, TX; three grandchildren, Jaden, Kassady and Logan Girard; a brother, Lawrence “Jim” Girard (Charlotte), Manhattan, KS;

Jackson "Mighty Mouse" Wade Noveroske blessed this earth with his presence at 5:56&nbsp; a.m. on February 2, 2007, completing his family and joining his parents, William and Hedy Noveroske, big sister Kelsey Salmon (Gabe), little big sister Karrah Bailey and big brother John Noveroske. Jackson’s passion for fishing began at a very early age with his patience developing sometime later. His Dad, brother, Grandpa Corby, Uncles Johnny and Jesse, cousins Hayden and Lakin and his dog “Charlie Wiggles” were his favorite fishing buddies. Before the sun rose and into all hours of the night, he would fish in the cove behind his house or the rock ledge behind his grandparent’s house. Jackson didn’t need to be taught how to fish. He would try everything in his unique and unorthodox bag of tricks to catch a catfish, bass, crappie, wiper, or whatever managed to find its way on the end of his line saying, “I told you so” whenever anyone questioned his fishing ways. His favorite to catch and reel in was a big ole blue cat. When he wasn’t fishing, the Tree of Life behind Grandpa and Grandma’s house is where you would find him. Summer to Jackson meant "Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset repeat”! Jackson loved to do anything and everything outdoors. You would find him climbing trees out in the woods or right next to the house, shooting his BB gun, bow or makeshift rigged homemade weapons. Jackson loved sitting in the woods and watching the birds, wildlife, and just being out in nature. He developed a passion for hunting squirrel, turkey and deer. He got his first buck and turkey this past year and boy was he so very proud! ‘Hunting, fishing and loving every day” pretty much summed up what Jackson was about. He was passionate and kind and tried to save injured animals that made their way into his back yard. It didn’t matter whether it was a bird, squirrel, dog or cat; he wanted to help it heal. He loved feeding the birds in his backyard, his fish in the family pond or just sitting out on the deck listening to the locusts, crickets, and watching the lightning bugs. He was a gentle, kind and caring soul that appreciated everything in God’s creation. You could always find Jackson barefoot. His family could never figure out how a splinter could get pass his calloused feet from time to time, because he refused to wear shoes and socks. Running a 3k road race for his Milford Elementary school while barefoot was no big deal to him along with finishing first. His elementary teachers would reward him with not having to wear his shoes in class instead of a free pencil or piece of candy for those special “caught ya” moments. Jackson began his love for soccer watching his Dad coach his older siblings. He learned and developed his skills and knowledge for the game with the Milford Parks and Recreational team. Jackson moved on to travel league at the age of 8yrs playing on the Flint Hills Stingrays team. He continued to play on numerous club teams until 2021 when he played his final soccer game for the Danger FC Soccer Club. It was during his Stingray playing days that Jackson got his nickname “Mouse." During one of his many tournament games there were multiple “Jackson’s” out on the field. His Mom decided that he needed a nickname so he could tell when she and family were cheering him on. And because he was quiet and soft spoken, so very quick on and off the field, climbing everything he could, along with the fact that when he got excited, he literally squeaked, his mom gave him the nickname, Mouse. His “Mighty Mouse” name came on November 24, 2020, when Jackson was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. His favorite vacation place was Florida along the Emerald Coast. He loved spending time on the beach with all his family and trying to catch fish he had never caught before. He was adventurous and liked trying new things like skim boarding, crabbing, snorkeling or just walking along the beach searching for things that washed up on the shore. He loved watching the dolphins and the spectacular sunsets along the coasts. Jackson loved his Grandma’s porcupine meatballs and homemade chicken and noodles. He couldn’t wait for grandpa’s ham during holiday feasts, his dad’s fried rice and mom’s breakfast meals and lasagna were a comfort to him while at home. His favorite drink was Arizona sweet tea or the Arnold palmer, half tea/half lemonade. Almond Joy, Milky Way, and Hershey’s chocolate with almonds were among his favorite candy bars. His favorite ice cream was rainbow sherbet. His favorite color was green. Jackson was a true warrior. He was resilient, strong, tough, and able to tackle anything that he came up against. He was kind and patient with all his younger cousins and niece. He absolutely relished the fact that he was Uncle Mouse to his most favorite little girl, Charlotte Faye. When he wasn’t able to be home or with other family, he would turn to his Xbox where he could talk, yell and scream and get so excited with his friends and gaming buddy, Jenson, playing his Xbox. Jackson completed his elementary school years as a Milford Laker at Milford Elementary School and continued through his middle school years as a Junction City Middle School Wildcat. Jackson was to begin his sophomore year as a Blue Jay at Junction City High School and was looking forward to getting back on the soccer field to play alongside his brother and friends. His favorite part of the school day…the end of the day bell. His earthly journey is over, but an eternal, peaceful, loving journey with the Lord God and all his loving relatives that preceded him is his to make. He will truly be forever missed and forever in our hearts. A visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at Johnson Funeral Home. Joe was born July 30, 1947, in Ohio the son of Carl E. and Martha E. (Magato) Leiss. Joe served in the United States Army retiring in 1974. After his retirement, he owned and operated Riverside Bar and Grill, Ann's Place and Chowon Restaurant all in Junction City, KS. He married Ann Lee Leiss on July 1, 1989 in Junction City. Mary Elizabeth Damman, 83 died August 24, 2022 in Linn, KS.&nbsp; She was born on December 11, 1938 in Garnett, Kansas the daughter of Ora and Ida Cunningham.&nbsp; Mary grew up in the Lane community and was a Class of 1956 graduate of Lane High School.&nbsp; She married Thurl Damman on September 19, 1959.&nbsp; Mary Worked as a Secretary at the White House during the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations.&nbsp; They farmed in the Palmer community when they returned to Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp; Mary also worked as a waitress at the Linn American Legion, as a CNA at the nursing home and as a bookkeeper for many businesses.&nbsp; Thurl preceded her in death on July 7, 2000.&nbsp; In her free time, Mary enjoyed gardening in her strawberry patch, quilting and playing games with her grandchildren.&nbsp; She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church.&nbsp; Mary was also preceded in death by her parents, 5 sisters and 4 brothers.

Diane Marie Swarthout, age 69, died August 23, 2022, at her home in Clay Center, Kansas. She was born to Mitchell Sr. and Isabell (Kingman) Baldwin in Corning, New York on February 1, 1953. Diane grew up in New York and graduated from Dundy High School. She later went on to Cloud County Community College where she earned and Associates in Applied Science degree. Diane married Clifford Swarthout Sr. on July 3, 1971. She worked as a certified nurse's aide for home health and a certified medication aide at Medical Lodge in Clay Center as well as Leonardville Nursing Home.&nbsp; Diane also delivered the newspaper for several different newspapers. She enjoyed fishing and coloring, but most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Eagles. She is preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, John Smith; stepdaughter, Tracy and great-granddaughter, Sophie Lynn
