Michael “Mike” L. Diederich, age 74, passed away at Stormont Vail Health Center in Topeka, on Tuesday, March 15, 2022.

Mike was born in Concordia, on January 22, 1948, to Vernon A. and Evelyn I. (Laird) Diederich.&nbsp; He graduated from Linn High School in 1967.&nbsp; That fall he joined the US Air Force.&nbsp; Then on December 2, 1967, at Wichita Falls, Texas, he married his high school sweetheart, Della Neal.&nbsp; They were able to spend their first years together on the island of Bermuda, where Mike was stationed.&nbsp;

Mike was a rancher and farmer.&nbsp; He also worked as welder for Linn Post and Pipe and had worked at Hutchison-Mayrath, Trailman and Travalong.&nbsp; He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf.&nbsp; He was also a member of the Shaw Post 235 of the American Legion in Greenleaf.&nbsp; He loved his children and grandkids.&nbsp; He enjoyed hunting, fishing and horseback riding.&nbsp; He had been a member of several riding clubs over the years.

Survivors include his wife Della, his two children: Deborah (Mark) Oelschlager of Greenleaf, James (Rachael) Diederich of Altus, Oklahoma and four grandchildren: Allen Diederich, Megan (Jaden) Pendergraft, Kevin Diederich and Luke Diederich, a great granddaughter, Ellie, and eight brothers and sisters:&nbsp; Patrick (Bonnie) Diederich of Greenleaf, John (Cheryl) Diederich of Greenleaf, Mathias “Matt” (Kellie) Diederich of Greenleaf, Dorothy Diederich of Greenleaf, Helen (Delmar) Weiche of Barnes, Sally Walter of Greenleaf, Joann (Randy) Thorman of Greenleaf and Mary Lisa Diederich of Marysville.

Preceding Mike in death were his parents, and infant brother, John Michael Diederich and a brother-in-law, John Walter.

Visitation will begin at 6:00 pm, with a Rosary said at 7:00 pm on Monday, March 21 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenleaf with Father Joseph Kieffer as the Celebrant. Special hymns are to include “Precious Lord Take My Hand” and “How Great Thou Art”.&nbsp; The musician is Gina Miller.&nbsp; Honorary Bearers include Allen Diederich, Kevin Diederich, Luke Diederich, Patrick Diederich, Mathias Diederich and John Diederich.&nbsp; Inurnment, with military honors, will follow the service at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, at Kimeo.

Johnny E. Kinder, 76 of Abilene passed away March 16, 2022. He was born October 10, 1945 in Sacramento, California, the son of Vernon Eugene and Anna Lee (Callison) Kinder. Johnny enlisted in the Army in 1966, serving in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1969. He was united in marriage to Linda Wilson on April 18, 2009 at the Eisenhower Park in Abilene. Johnny worked as a senior commercial appraiser for 31 years in Placer County, California.

 He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Directors/Secretary, American Legion Adjutant, VFW Commander, Sr. Vice Commander, District Vice Commander and DAV. He is survived by his loving wife Linda of the home. One son, Joe Kinder of Roseville, CA. One step-son, Jeremy Geering (Leah) of Abilene and a step-daughter, MaryAnn Lantz of Emporia. Grandchildren: Ashley (Kinder) Savant and husband Michael; Haley (Kinder) Beach and husband Jeff; Josh Kinder; Lana Geering; Tabor Geering and Kara Geering. One brother, Jay Kinder and one sister, Edie Andrews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Vernon Lee Kinder.

Darrell W. Wiley, 85, of Chapman, Kansas passed away March 15, 2022 at Geary Community Hospital. He was born September 14, 1936 in Solomon, Kansas, the son of Harry and Mildred (Watt) Wiley.

 He enlisted in the United States Army after high school, serving 3 years stationed in Germany. Darrell earned his Masters Degree at Kansas State University. On February 4, 1961 he was united in marriage to Lucille Holt. Darrell worked at the Kansas State University in the faculty departments and later worked as the food service director for Wichita public schools. Darrell and Lucille bought a farm house outside of Chapman where he farmed. He was involved in the Navarre and Chapman Lion’s Club, COOP Board at Navarre, Chapman United Methodist Church, Chapman councilman, President of the Chapman Community Foundation, 4-H leader and coached little league baseball.

Darrell is survived by his loving wife Lucille of the home. Three daughters: Kelly (Dave) Wendt of Hope; Toni (Shane) Britt of Gardner and Amy (Gary) Coup of Herington. One son, Darin (Stacia) Wiley of Abilene. Nine grandchildren: Paul (Heather) Stackley; Brooke (Ryan) Cooey; Ethan (Kaitlin) Britt; Brogan (Jon) Griffith; Sgt. Carina (Patricia) Coup; MaKayla Coup; Brett Coup; Tori Foy; Jaxon Foy, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. The family has chosen cremation.

On March 15, 2022, James (Jim) Belvill, age 64, passed away peacefully at home after fighting a courageous nine-month battle with cancer. He was born to Louis and Darlene (Perkins) Belvill in Denver, Colorado on June 18, 1957, and grew up in Concordia, Kansas. After graduating from Concordia High School in 1976, he worked as a welder at CE for many years. On July 28, 1979, he united in marriage with Jearl Rae Thoman. They later divorced but remained lifelong friends. Jim moved to McPherson, Kansas, where he worked at Ultrafab. After working there for many years as a welder, he moved to Abilene, Kansas, to be closer to family. He most recently worked as a welder for Brierton Engineering. Jim loved his time there and considered the Brierton team part of his extended family. He greatly appreciated their support during his illness. Jim was a loving son, a loyal friend, and the best brother any sister could have. He loved his sisters very much and would do anything for them. He had a huge heart and would give his last dime to anyone in need.

 Jim is survived by his mother, Darlene (Belvill) Davis of Abilene; sisters, Deb (Mike) Jackson of Lakewood Ranch, Florida; Maria (Jim) Nuss of Abilene; Toni (Kurt) Johnston of Concordia; and Sherrie Richard of Concordia. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Louie; stepfather, Willie Davis; and paternal and maternal grandparents.

 Per Jim's request, there will not be a memorial service or funeral. His immediate family will have a celebration of his life at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County. The family would like to thank Dr. Short for his expert care during Jim's illness. Special thanks to Melissa, our hospice nurse, and the other hospice workers who went above and beyond in providing care. We are eternally grateful for the kindness, compassion, and comfort they gave to Jim and our family.

James Ira Belvill

Jolin J. Burris, 86, of Paxico, Kansas, passed away on Thursday (March 17, 2022) at Plaza West in Topeka, Kansas.

Born April 18, 1935 at home on the family farm near Paxico, Kansas, Jolin was the daughter of Clarence H. “Butz” and Ruby D. (Stout) Breymeyer. Jolin was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Faith Community Church of Wells Creek where she was a lifelong member. She received her elementary education in a country school, District 66, fondly remembered as “Possom College”.&nbsp; She was a graduate of Paxico High School and Clarks Business College in Topeka.

Jolin joined the U. S. Marine Corps in 1953 and served her country for 3 years until her discharge in 1956.&nbsp; While in the Marines, Jolin met Melvin Burris Jr. and they were married from 1958 until Melvin’s passing on April 23, 2006.

Jolin enjoyed sewing, reading, listening to music, especially BOTT Radio, going antiquing, watching Lawrence Welk on TV and helping on the farm.&nbsp; She was known by her family for her cooking and always putting others first.&nbsp; Jolin’s greatest joy was spending time caring for her grandchildren.

Jolin was primarily a homemaker taking care of her family, but she had also been employed for the Kansas Board of Tax Appeals, P.J.’s Truck Stop in Maple Hill and as personal housekeeper for Mrs. Sandra Adams of Maple Hill.&nbsp;

Survivors include three sons, Melvin Burris III (Norma) of Paxico, KS, Andrew Burris of Round Rock, TX and Stuart Burris of Murfreesboro, TN; three daughters, April Ramsey of Topeka, KS, Colleen Smalley (Joe) of Harveyville, KS and Anita Aubert (John) of Emmett, KS, twenty seven grandchildren; and many loving great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, including Rob Pittman.

&nbsp;Mrs. Burris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Melvin Jr.; a daughter, Tracy Kirwan; a brother, David Breymeyer; and a nephew, Norman Breymeyer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 23 in Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home, Wamego with Pastor Tim Pearson officiating.&nbsp; Burial with Military Honors by the Marine Corps Funeral Honors Detail and the Wamego American Legion Post 172 will be in Wells Creek Cemetery.

David Lee Gordon, 76, of Emmett, Kansas, passed away on Saturday (February 19, 2022) at his home in Emmett, Kansas.

Born November 28, 1945 in Onaga, Kansas, David was the son of Glenn Harley and Helen Marie (Stevenson) Gordon.

David had been employed as a carpenter for various construction companies until his retirement.

Surviving is his sister, Sue Mazer (Don) of Wamego, KS.

Mr. Gordon was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Jean Ann Wilcox.

Memorial graveside services will be held Thursday morning (March 24, 2022) at 11:00 at the Wamego City Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Tony Mattia officiating.

David Lee Gordon

Bradford Leo Rauch, formerly of Holyoke, CO, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 9, 2022 at the age of 71 in his new home in Oshkosh, NE. &nbsp;&nbsp;Brad was born on August 28, 1950 in Concordia, KS to Carman and Mary Alice Rauch and was the eldest of 6 children.

Brad grew up in Miltonvale, KS, Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, MO and graduated high school from North Kansas City High School in 1968.&nbsp; After attending college at UMKC, he enlisted in the US Army and served during the Vietnam War as a communications expert.&nbsp; After his time in the army, Brad lived in Springfield, OR, where he worked for the US Forestry Service and married Frances Laflin of Clay Center, KS. &nbsp;Brad and Fran then moved to Minneapolis, KS, where Brad went on to work for Ottawa County Feeders before finding his long-term position with Timmerman &amp; Son’s feedlot in Atwood, CO.

Brad enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, spending time with friends, but most of all being with his grandkids. He had a special bond with each of them.

Brad is survived by his children Levi (Allison) Rauch of Oshkosh, NE and Sara (Jason) Heermann of Imperial, NE, grandchildren, Madie Rauch of Oshkosh, NE, Sean Heermann, Ashlyn Heermann, and Dylan Heermann all of Imperial, NE., parents Larry and Mary Mancini of Tulsa, OK and siblings, Kimberly (Steve) Knapp of Tulsa, OK, Mark Rauch (Dennis Creedon) of Oklahoma City, OK, and Craig Rauch (Greg Byers) of Oklahoma City, OK. &nbsp;He also has 4 nieces and 4 nephews.

Brad is preceded in death by his father, Carman Rauch, his brother Pat Rauch, sister Viki Lyn Rauch, wife Frances Rauch, and daughter Angela Rauch.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 17, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. with a viewing beforehand at 9:00am in Clay Center, KS at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home. A Celebration of life will be held on Sunday March 27, 2022 at the Sunset View Community Center in Holyoke, CO at 1:00&nbsp; &nbsp;p.m.

Bradford Leo Rauch, formerly of Holyoke, CO, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 9, 2022 at the age of 71 in his new home in Oshkosh, NE. &nbsp;&nbsp;Brad was born on August 28, 1950 in Concordia, KS to Carman and Mary Alice Rauch and was the eldest of 6 children.Brad grew up in Miltonvale, KS, Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, MO and graduated high school from North Kansas City High School in 1968.&nbsp; After attending college at UMKC, he enlisted in the US Army and served during the Vietnam War as a communications expert.&nbsp; After his time in the army, Brad lived in Springfield, OR, where he worked for the US Forestry Service and married Frances Laflin of Clay Center, KS. &nbsp;Brad and Fran then moved to Minneapolis, KS, where Brad went on to work for Ottawa County Feeders before finding his long-term position with Timmerman &amp; Son’s feedlot in Atwood, CO.Brad enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, spending time with friends, but most of all being with his grandkids. He had a special bond with each of them.Brad is survived by his children Levi (Allison) Rauch of Oshkosh, NE and Sara (Jason) Heermann of Imperial, NE, grandchildren, Madie Rauch of Oshkosh, NE, Sean Heermann, Ashlyn Heermann, and Dylan Heermann all of Imperial, NE., parents Larry and Mary Mancini of Tulsa, OK and siblings, Kimberly (Steve) Knapp of Tulsa, OK, Mark Rauch (Dennis Creedon) of Oklahoma City, OK, and Craig Rauch (Greg Byers) of Oklahoma City, OK. &nbsp;He also has 4 nieces and 4 nephews.Brad is preceded in death by his father, Carman Rauch, his brother Pat Rauch, sister Viki Lyn Rauch, wife Frances Rauch, and daughter Angela Rauch.Funeral services will be held on Thursday March 17, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. with a viewing beforehand at 9:00am in Clay Center, KS at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home. Billie really enjoyed working with the public. She met many people while working at Tony’s Pizza in Salina, Alco/Duckwall in Abilene, Bush’s Market in Solomon and, finally, retiring from Salina Regional Medical Center where she worked in the cafeteria for many years. She truly never knew a stranger. You could always count on a smile and a hug from Billie no matter where you saw her. She was an inspiration to all to be kind and caring towards everyone you meet.

Cremation was chosen and a graveside service will be held at Prairie Mound Cemetery on Saturday, March 19th at 12:00 p.m..

Longtime Manhattan resident John R. Roberts, Jr. age 97, died peacefully on March 13, 2022 at his residence at Meadowlark Hills. He was surrounded by family at the time of his death. Born on November 5, 1924 in Kansas City, Missouri to John R. Roberts, Sr. and Margaret Mary Kerwin Roberts, who preceded him in death. He was baptized at Holy Name Catholic Church in Kansas City, MO. John spent much of his childhood at the Kansas City Orphan Boys’ Home with his brother William (Bill) Russell Roberts. His sister Patricia Anna Roberts resided in a neighboring orphanage for girls. John and Bill were later repatriated with their father upon his remarriage later in his childhood. He graduated from Manhattan High School in 1943, having transferred from Colby (Kansas) High School midway through his junior year, after his father was transferred to Manhattan by his employer, the Kansas Highway Patrol. Upon graduation from Manhattan High School, John and a number of his high school buddies enlisted in the U.S Navy (June 4, 1943). From there, he attended boot camp in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Following that, he was transferred to Alameda Naval Air Station for training as a Signalman for U.S. Navy operations in the Pacific Theater during World War II. With the Navy, John served on the staff of U.S. Navy Admiral Chester Nimitz, and followed the Admiral from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to such places as Kwajalein, Wake Island, Johnston Atoll and Guam. John utilized the G.I. Bill to obtain a pilot’s license in 1947 and then attended Kansas State University where he majored in business administration. At Kansas State, John was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, where he served as President and met many lifelong friends. He played on the Kansas State football team and was a proud member of Golden Cats. John met Mary Margaret Finney Jacobs of Alta Vista, Kansas, and they were married on February 3, 1951 at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, then located at 6th and Osage in Manhattan, Kansas. That 64-year marriage lasted until Mary’s death in 2015. John’s career in Manhattan included real estate, where his wife Mary joined him at Roberts Real Estate. He was a Board member of the Manhattan Board of Realtors for many years and also served as its President several times. In addition, he was on the Board of Directors of the Kansas Association of Realtors and served as Zone IV Vice President. He also sat for many years on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Realtors and chaired the Association’s Credentials Committee. John’s local public service included heading up the United Way chapter in Manhattan, the March of Dimes local chapter, and on the Board of Directors of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce and Manhattan Country Club. He was a Life Member of the Kansas State University and Manhattan High School alumni associations. John served as Warden and on the Vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He loved coaching little league baseball in Manhattan, which he did for many years. In his retirement, John served as bailiff at the Riley County District Court, which he enjoyed immensely. As he aged, John loved parades in Manhattan and being in them with the Vista Coffee Group. In 2019, he served as Grand Marshall of the 2019 Veteran’s Day Parade as an Honored World War II Veteran. His favorite sport was golf, and at one point in his late 70’s, he “shot his age,” meaning his score for 18 holes was the same as his age at the time. John is preceded in death by his wife Mary, son Thomas Marlowe Roberts, his parents, brother William Russell Roberts and sister Patricia Anna Tomasiewicz. He is survived by his sons; John Russell Roberts III of Sacramento, CA; James William Roberts, Bend, OR; Mary Ann (Annie) and Terry Harts of Manhattan, KS; daughter-in-law LuAnn Roberts, Elizabeth, CO. Other survivors include two grandsons, John Dalton Harts and Alec Thomas McCormick Roberts; three granddaughters, Jordan Margaret Phillips, Kendall Elizabeth Ley and Anna Elaine Harts; two step-granddaughters, Melissa Johnson and Krissy Enriquez; eight great grandchildren and numerous step-great grandchildren. He is also survived by Michael Leland and wife Frances Kettenbach, Boston, Massachusetts and their three children Cara Kettenback Nutter, Michael Edward Kettenbach, and Edward Leland Kettenback and four great-grandchildren. Dr. Max R. Russell, 83, of Wamego, Kansas, beloved husband, father, grandfather, died March 11, 2022. He was born December 15, 1938 to Carl H. Russell and Dorothy A. Russell, at home in Republic County, Kansas, the sixth of ten children. He attended Park Hill School and Courtland Elementary School, Courtland, Kansas. He graduated as Salutatorian from Courtland High School in 1956. After graduating he farmed and raised livestock with his brothers until he enlisted in the U.S. Army because his number was close to coming up on the Draft list. He joined the Army in 1961 and served in Kitzingen, Germany and Bamberg, Germany. After his service he took advantage of the G.I. Bill to enroll in Kansas State University. He graduated from Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1970. In 1971 he joined his fellow classmate, Dr. Jim Hildebrand, in a veterinary practice at Northside Animal Hospital, Wamego, Kansas. He sold his share of the practice to Dr. Hildebrand after 20 years and then worked for eight years for USDA as a federal veterinarian in meat inspection in Dodge City, Kansas. He and Dr. Hildebrand remained life-long friends, never lacking for conversation about their practice experiences. His retirement luxury was season tickets to KSU football and basketball managing the distance from car to game either by his motorized scooter or a wheelchair in spite of his difficulty walking. He returned to Wamego after his retirement where he went into cattle partnership with several nephews. He said it was the best job ever because he checked the pasture during the warm months and the nephews had the task of calving in the cold months. He was a long-time member of the Wamego First Presbyterian Church, where he served as both Deacon and Elder.

He married Kay Nagely on December 22, 1968. They are the parents of Sean, Elizabeth, and Patrick. He is survived by his wife of 53 years; son Sean (Natalie) and grandsons, Samuel and Max, of Carmel, Indiana; daughter Elizabeth (EB) Russell (Shawn Mahoney) of St Louis, Missouri; son Patrick of Wamego, Kansas. He is also survived by his sisters and brothers: Beverly Sothers, Courtland, Kansas; Maxine Fredrickson (Jan), Quinter, Kansas; Penny True (Don), Council Grove, Kansas; Ken Russell (Mary), Abilene, Kansas; Charles Russell (June), Nelson, Nebraska; his sisters-in-law: Verlee Russell, Ft Collins, Colorado; Joanne Russell, Scandia, Kansas; his brother-in-law, Douglas Nagely, Manchester, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews.

Max was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Chester and his wife, Mildred, Jim, and Gene Russell, his sister Phyllis and her husband Bill Mahin and brothers-in-law Ralph Sothers and Ron Sothers and his niece Kaylene Sothers Clark.

Brett Williams, 48, of Bentonville, Arkansas passed on March 7, 2022. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Elk’s Lodge, 723 S. Washington Street, Junction City, KS 66441.

Brett was born November 9, 1973 to Gail (McCarty) Waters of Junction City, KS, and Jack Williams of Decatur, TX. Brett attended Haltom High School, Haltom City, TX and graduated from Junction City High School, Junction City Kansas.&nbsp; After high school, he spent some time in the National Guard and studied Kinesiology at Kansas State University.

Brett Williams was the founder and owner of New You Fitness and later New You Tan in Bentonville. He was an avid boot-camping, mud-running, rope-climbing cheerleader for all. Brett was admired and loved by the many he positively impacted. He cultivated a family through the fitness center and will be dearly missed by the community as a whole.

Brett and his first wife, Amanda Williams of Bentonville, AR, traveled around the country working various assigned roles at Walmart. They share one son, Dyllan Bill-Williams, 21, Bentonville, Arkansas.

He is survived by his parents, Gail and Jeff Waters of Junction City, KS, and Jack and Richelle Williams of Decatur, TX. His wife, Canelia, step-daughter’s Audrie and Chloe; his sister, Brandi Williams (David) Palmer of Fort Collins, CO, and nephews, Jarod Lueker and Brayden Stephenson; another sister, Sara Williams Moon of Justin, TX, and nieces Kayleigh and Sofia.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Brett Williams was the founder and owner of New You Fitness and later New You Tan in Bentonville. He was an avid boot-camping, mud-running, rope-climbing cheerleader for all. Brett was admired and loved by the many he positively impacted. He cultivated a family through the fitness center and will be dearly missed by the community as a whole. Brett and his first wife, Amanda Williams of Bentonville, AR, traveled around the country working various assigned roles at Walmart. They share one son, Dyllan Bill-Williams, 21, Bentonville, Arkansas. He is survived by his parents, Gail and Jeff Waters of Junction City, KS, and Jack and Richelle Williams of Decatur, TX. His wife, Canelia, step-daughter’s Audrie and Chloe; his sister, Brandi Williams (David) Palmer of Fort Collins, CO, and nephews, Jarod Lueker and Brayden Stephenson; another sister, Sara Williams Moon of Justin, TX, and nieces Kayleigh and Sofia.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Betty Jo Patterson Coleman, age 66, loving mother of two, and adoring wife to husband, Retired Sergeant First Class Brian Coleman, transitioned to her heavenly home in the late hours of March 8, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Betty, was born August 13, 1955, in Junction City, Kansas, to Myrtle and McKinley Patterson, Sr. She was educated in Geary County Schools USD 475, where she graduated from Junction City High School in 1973. After high school she attended the University of Kansas and later would return home to begin working. Betty began her work with the former United Telephone Company (Sprint/Embarq/Century Link) in 1978. At United Telephone/Sprint, Betty worked as a telephone operator for many years before she moved on to the business office where she held various positions until her retirement in 2001. After taking a year off, she began a new career with the school district she grew up in. Her career in USD 475 began first as a librarian assistant at Ware Elementary School and soon she transferred to her beloved high school, where she remained until her retirement in December 2019. While there, Betty returned to her roots as a cheer coach. She was instrumental in coaching, mentoring, and encouraging these young ladies. Not only was she a positive example in the lives of her cheer students, but she was also a positive impact to students and staff alike. More than anything, her infectious smile, radiant personality, and everlasting Blue Jay Pride was a light throughout the high school halls, school district, and community. On May 24, 1986, she married the love of her life, Brian Coleman. In this union, they raised two sons. While married, they often could be seen dancing, listening to music, and cooking together. Betty loved her family and hosting holidays brought her so much joy; particularly, the 4th of July, where she started the "Family Olympics" full of games, competitions, gifts, and awards to the winners; which became the highlight of holiday festivities. Betty accepted Christ on May 23, 1993, and her faith was instrumental in keeping her grounded to navigate life's challenges and her most recent battle with cancer, for which Betty never gave up. She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her loving family: husband, Brian Coleman (Junction City, KS); two sons: Leslie S. Topeka, Kan. - David L. Hornbaker (Col. KHP, Ret.) passed peacefully, surrounded by family, March 7, 2022. On October 3, 1945, David was born in Hutchinson Kan. and baptized at the community’s Methodist Church. He earned advanced degrees from Washburn University and the University of Kansas in Criminal Justice and Public Administration. He was a sixth generation Kansan and served his country as Drill Sergeant in the United States Army through the Vietnam Conflict. David began a career in law enforcement with the Junction City Police Department and served as Patrolman, Detective and Detective Sergeant. He joined the Kansas Highway Patrol as a Trooper in Great Bend and later was transferred to Topeka and promoted as Sergeant. His career continued to flourish as he earned rank as Lieutenant. Governor John Carlin appointed him as Colonel (Superintendent) in 1980. Col. Hornbaker led the Kansas Highway Patrol in this capacity until 1983. Later, he served as Major and then Lt. Colonel. Ultimately, Col. Hornbaker became the first member of the Kansas Highway Patrol to serve in every rank. After retirement, he provided private security for the Kansas Expocentre and rubbed elbows with famous musicians such as KISS and Metallica. Notable career moments include overseeing security for historic events including Kansas Governor Bill Graves's inauguration, President Richard Nixon’s nomination at the Republican National Convention, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s (IKE) 1969 funeral detail; and in providing expert witness testimony for high profile court cases. David loved rock and metal music and blasted music so loud it may have caused some neighborly discord. He had a passion for planes and cars, especially “muscle” cars. He collected and restored many including his 1964 ½ Mustang, 1965 GTO (which earned awards in every show it entered), 1966 Corvette, and 1994 Dodge Viper. Philanthropically, David served his community in many ways including through the Optimist Club of Great Bend and White Lake Optimist (Topeka-Optimist) as its president, through membership with Topeka’s American Legion Post #1 and as a volunteer instructor for KHP Academy. David was a loving father and grandfather and a man of great curiosity and intelligence. His encyclopedic memory was extremely useful in his daily viewing of “Jeopardy!” His talents knew no bounds as he mastered countless skills through self-research. He remodeled his basement doing his own wiring, circuits and plumbing armed with self-taught knowledge and reference books. He was a doting grandfather and uncle, oftentimes affording unique life experiences that will no doubt leave them lasting memories. David’s hobbies typically led to mastery, and cooking was no exception; he became the family’s Julia Child. He was loyal and steadfast in his convictions; stern and unflappable; tough but reliable; and incredibly loving. He was the head of the family and will be greatly missed by all of them. David was preceded in death by his parents Lee Vaughn Hornbaker (2004) and Alma (Wacha) Hornbaker (1989); and his loyal friend and walking partner, Ian, a Welsh Pembroke Corgi. David is survived by his life partner, Mary Parmentier and two children (from prior marriage to Peggy Smith Hanna): a daughter, Veronica Wooten (Les) of Topeka; and son, Matthew Hornbaker (Jamie), Berryton. David was loved by six grandchildren: Ethan Schnieders (Jessica), KCMO; Kennedy Schnieders (Jackson Smith), Overland Park; Grace Wooten, Lawrence; Korrie Kennedy, Topeka; Quincy Kennedy, Berryton; and Keaton Hornbaker, Berryton; his best friend and brother, Steven Hornbaker (Sue), Junction City and nephew, Andrew Hornbaker (Brittany), KCMO. David is to be cremated and eventually inurned with his parents in Junction City. David L. Hornbaker (Col. KHP, Ret.) - 1945-2022

It was snowing on the day that Luis Felipe Ocasio Rivera passed away with his family at his bedside. As if to escape the cold, he succumbed to illness and entered his warm heavenly home on March 10, 2022 at 12:14 in the afternoon. His life of 65 years began in Juncos, Puerto Rico on June 8, 1956 where he was born to the late Simon Ocasio and Regina Rivera. He was raised there with his only sibling, his sister Carmen. It was in Puerto Rico where he met his wife, started his family, and commenced a journey of adventure and service to his nation which begot the quiet life full of simple pleasures he enjoyed in his last years of life. After graduating from Alfonzo Diaz Lebron High School, Luis enlisted in the United States Army, originally as an infantryman, reclassing later as a power generator mechanic. He was stationed both stateside and abroad, calling Fort Campbell, Fort Carson, Germany, Korea, and Fort Riley home while in service. He also deployed to Bosnia on a peacekeeping mission and to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in support and defense of his nation. After over 20 years in service, he retired out of Fort Riley and settled with his family in Junction City, Kansas. He will live on in the hearts and memories of those who called him dad, daddy, pa, papi, papito, negro, cayito, and chencho. He is survived by his wife of almost 39 years, Edelmira, four children, Edelis, Yamil, Kiara and her husband James, and four grandchildren, Gavin, Eli, Liam, and Mallorie. He will be remembered for so many things. We will never see a chessboard, a garden, or fishing gear in the same light. Nor will we be able to watch Disney or DreamWorks movies or hear a Forrest Gump quote without thinking of him. The dogs of the family, especially his own Pocoyo, will miss the human who led them in song, kept them chubby, and loved them dearly. We will miss his jokes, his laugh, and his top of the head kisses. His hugs and his unconditional love and support. And though our toes may be safe from the unexpected toe pull, we would gladly receive the sting of a cracked knuckle if it meant having him back with us. The family will gather for a private service on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 followed by a graveside service with full military honors at Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery in Manhattan, Kansas at one o’clock in the afternoon.

Dollie D. Toburen, age 93, of Waterville, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at Blue Valley Senior Living in Blue Rapids.

Dollie was born on July 24, 1928, to John and Emma (Butler) Schilling.&nbsp; She graduated from high school in Marysville.

She was married to Donald Toburen on July 3, 1948, for 67 years until his death in 2016.&nbsp; They had three sons:&nbsp; Don, Jr., David and Denison “Denny”.&nbsp; She was a devoted caretaker for many years working at Marysville Community Hospital and the Blue Rapids Nursing Home.

Dollie was a member of the Waterville United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She was instrumental, along with Rachel Sanner, in bringing the Harvesters food truck to Waterville.&nbsp; She and Mel Bartz initiated and established the Veteran’s Wall in the Waterville Community Center.

Dollie was preceded in death by her husband Donald, a son Denny, an infant great grandson, Gavin Young and&nbsp;four siblings: Nellie Motsinger, Vina Newman, Mildred Buck and Albert (Bud) Schilling.&nbsp; She is survived by her sons Don “Sonny” and wife Cindy of Paola and David and wife Linda&nbsp; of Sierra Vista, Arizona, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, as well as countless nieces and nephews.

Bonnie (Sanders) Steffen died at the age of 102 on March 10, 2022 at Clay County Hospital.&nbsp; She was born on October 13, 1919 and grew up southeast of Lamar in Ottawa County, Kansas.&nbsp; Bonnie was the daughter of Frank and Carrie (Stewart) Sanders.&nbsp; Bonnie was predeceased by her parents and siblings Darrell Sanders, Loy Sanders, Lela Blomberg, Boyd Sanders (twin) and Javene Whitley.&nbsp;&nbsp; Bonnie married the love of her life Vergil Glenn Steffen on May 9, 1941 whom passed away on February 22, 2008.

Bonnie was united in marriage to Vergil at the home of her parents near Lamar, Kansas and to this union two sons were born, Glenn Boyd and Allen Eugene.&nbsp; Bonnie is survived by her two sons Glenn Steffen of Wakefield, Kansas and Allen Steffen and his wife Gwen of Wiggins, Colorado.&nbsp; Bonnie has four grandchildren Lisa Sheets, Debbie Newman (husband Ralph), Boyd Steffen (wife Angela) and Tiffany Steffen.&nbsp; She also has six great-grandchildren Jessica Sheets, Jeremie Sheets, Tristan Newman, Megan Newman, Elijah Steffen and Isaiah Steffen.

Bonnie was a member of the Uniondale Baptist Church and later attended the Clay Center Bible Church.&nbsp; In most recent years she attended the First Baptist Church of Clay Center with her son Glenn until she was unable to do so.&nbsp; Bonnie turned over the management of the Farm to her son Glenn in 2016 and lived with Glenn for the last 5 years.

She was a graduate of Minneapolis High School, completing her post graduate studies at Clay Center High School and attended Kansas State University for her teaching certificate.&nbsp; Bonnie began her teaching career in Ottawa County at Grass Valley and Finn schools teaching 1st through 8th grade.&nbsp; She went on to teach in Clay County at Diamond and Union Dale Schools.&nbsp; Once married, her family became her focus, while raising two children, Vergil and Bonnie managed the farm south of Clay Center.&nbsp; Along the way, Bonnie worked as a bookkeeper for WW Smith &amp; Sons John Deere Tractor in Clay Center.&nbsp; Bonnie then helped care for her mother Carrie at the end of her life while studying to be a Nurse’s Aide.&nbsp; After her mother’s passing, Bonnie worked at Clay Center Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide loving on all of the babies in the nursey.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bonnie had a servant’s heart, preferring to make sure everyone else’s needs were met before taking time for herself.&nbsp; She had fond memories of her twin brother Boyd who passed away at 8 years old and was looking forward to seeing him again.&nbsp;

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 Tuesday at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center KS.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center, Kansas.

Genevieve (Anguiano) Burwell, age 88, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2022 in Salina. She was born May 7, 1933 in Talmage, Kansas the daughter of Seberiano and Librada (Compos) Anguiano. On August 16, 1964 she married Normann Burwell. Genevieve was a Surgical Technician for Abilene Memorial Hospital all of her life before retiring, and a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church and the D of I in Abilene.

She is survived by her son David Cress (Dee), daughter Liz Alvarez (Mark Larson), brothers Jess Anguiano (Mary), John Anguiano (Judy), sister Mary Randall, three granddaughters Caitlin Wallace (Grant) Becca Cress (Garrett Fritch), Kari Alvarez, and one great granddaughter Matilda Marie Wallace. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Normann on July 17, 2021, her brothers Rosario Anguiano, Tony Anguiano, Ben Anguiano, sisters Josephine Anguiano, and Theodora Anguiano. Genevieve (Anguiano) Burwell

Michael (Mike) Lynn Morin, age 59 died March 8, 2022, at Good Shepherd Home and Hospice House. He was born on April 2, 1962, in Belleville, Kansas. He was the son of Robert (Bob) and Rose Morin and the third of four children. After moving to Manhattan, KS Mike attended Seven Dolors grade school and graduated from Msgr. Luckey High School. During his time growing up in Manhattan, he spent time playing outside with neighborhood and high school friends, camping and boating on family vacations, and a lot of fishing…Mike loved to fish. He was active in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, reaching the rank of Eagle. Known for being one tough cookie, he was active in sports at Luckey High, playing football, basketball and running long distance in track. After high school, he attended Kansas State University taking numerous classes. While Mike had a love for learning, his real passion for learning was with the outdoors. After choosing to leave Kansas State, Mike took to the backroads and highways. Though he travelled to the four corners of the US and everything in between, he seemed to particularly enjoy West Virginia. He would routinely travel to that area, reconnecting with acquaintances, finding handyman work to keep himself active, and doing what he could to help those around him. He especially enjoyed working with his hands, primarily doing framing and roofing construction in addition to odd jobs. In recounting his trips, it was evident that Mike had a big heart. No matter where he was, he would always help others in need. Mike, as they say, had a memory like a ‘steel trap’. He could describe his adventures in such incredible detail, referencing people, places, specific days and locations-even the highway numbers on his routes. Mike was an avid gardener as well, something he learned from his mother for sure. He returned to the Manhattan area later on, staying closer to home, due to his battle with lung cancer. While back in Manhattan, he would balance time between a few favorite camp sites at Tuttle Creek Lake with time at home with his parents. When out camping, it usually wouldn’t matter the time of year. He was very tough, able to endure all types of weather, and would rely on his training from scouts or his survival techniques from living on the road, to survive all types of conditions. One could be guaranteed that if you found his favorite camping areas, you would also find that he left it better than how he found it-be it through improved drainage and erosion control, or simply an improved nature area. He would talk fondly of the wildlife he encountered while at the lake, whether they had wings or legs…many he would see routinely over the course of a season (or one season to the next) and talk about how they grew and matured. When not at the lake, he found time to continue gardening, making sure to share the vegetables with friends and neighbors. He always enjoyed visiting with the neighbors, helping out those in Westbank Townhomes with watering, snow removal, and sharing food that he and Dad would smoke or grill. Though battling his own health issues with cancer, he always found time to support and console his mom, who was dealing with cancer herself. He was an incredibly caring individual when it came to this support. Having gone through some rounds of cancer treatment himself, he was always helping his mother, knowing what she was going to go through, and how he could best help before, during and after treatment. He was not around family much in his adult years with all the travelling, but he was around when it mattered most, and for that, his family is eternally grateful. Mike is preceded in death by his mother, Rose, of Manhattan. He is survived by his father, Bob, of Manhattan, siblings: Terry of Moscow, ID., Dale of Houston, TX., Julie Melchior of Lenexa, KS., and their family members. Karin Gertrude (Powierza) Shipley, 82, of Manhattan, passed away Tuesday, March 1st, at Homestead of Olathe Assisted Living, Olathe. She worked at FootLocker in Junction City and was a homemaker. Karin was born in Danzig, Germany, on January 20, 1940, the daughter of the late Dorthea and Gerhard Paul Kreft. She was the widow of Richard​J. Powierza and Donald L. Shipley. She was a graduate of Manhattan Technical College in Graphic Arts. Karin is survived by her son, Gerhard Shipley of Lawrence; two sisters, Sigrid Fetter and Marianne Kreft, both of Bad Kreuznach, Germany. Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m.&nbsp; on March 18th, 2022 at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Manhattan.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She was a graduate of Wichita's North East Magnet High School in 1995, and from KSU with a bachelor's degree in English and Spanish, a member of the Honor Society, and the KSU Union Program Council She worked as the manager for Walden Books in Manhattan, and CB Announcements as a photo announcement specialist, and used her 14 different languages including sign languages in her work. She was a member of the First Church of the Brethren in Wichita KS. Janét is survived by her husband, Matt Ussary, of the home; daughter, Samantha Ussary, sons Tristan Ussary and Zachary Ussary, all of the home in Manhattan. Eric L. Johnson, Jr.

SFC (Retired) William Haywood “Bill” Reid was given life on this earth on December 3, 1938 in Weldon, North Carolina to Florence and Jake Reid, Sr. He departed this life on March 5, 2022 in Topeka, Kansas. He was educated in the Weldon, NC school systems before being drafted into the United States Army in December 1961. During his 21 years of faithful military service, he served 3 tours in Vietnam, Europe, and various military bases in the U.S. His awards included: the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2), Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm device and the Non-Commissioned Officer Development Ribbon. After retiring in Fort Riley, Kansas, he worked as a Department of the Army Civilian as the lead mechanic at the Auto Craft Shop on Fort Riley for another 20 years. He was joined in holy matrimony to Mary Lee Smalls, January 5, 1967 in Marion, SC. Their love continued for 55 years until his death. When he wasn’t working, his hobby had always been working on cars for himself, friends or whoever needed help. He never turned down anyone who needed help turning a wrench. His favorite car was the classic 1964 Pontiac GTO. He once stripped down a vehicle to its frame and rebuilt it by hand. His love of cars also included building model cars. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife of 55 years, Mary L. Reid of the home; a son Tracey A. Reid of Ellenwood, GA; two daughters, Stefanie D. SFC (Retired) William Haywood “Bill” Reid was given life on this earth on December 3, 1938 in Weldon, North Carolina to Florence and Jake Reid, Sr. He departed this life on March 5, 2022 in Topeka, Kansas. He was educated in the Weldon, NC school systems before being drafted into the United States Army in December 1961. During his 21 years of faithful military service, he served 3 tours in Vietnam, Europe, and various military bases in the U.S. His awards included: the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2), Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm device and the Non-Commissioned Officer Development Ribbon. After retiring in Fort Riley, Kansas, he worked as a Department of the Army Civilian as the lead mechanic at the Auto Craft Shop on Fort Riley for another 20 years. He was joined in holy matrimony to Mary Lee Smalls, January 5, 1967 in Marion, SC. Their love continued for 55 years until his death. When he wasn’t working, his hobby had always been working on cars for himself, friends or whoever needed help. He never turned down anyone who needed help turning a wrench. His favorite car was the classic 1964 Pontiac GTO. He once stripped down a vehicle to its frame and rebuilt it by hand. His love of cars also included building model cars. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife of 55 years, Mary L. Reid of the home; a son Tracey A. Reid of Ellenwood, GA; two daughters, Stefanie D. Hooten of Ellenwood, GA and Veronica Thomas(Capers) of Douglasville, GA; a brother, Jake Reid, Jr. of Washington, DC, and a sister, Hanola Crowell of Weldon, NC; 4 grandchildren: Ti’Jhan D. Smith of Killeen, TX, Marcus L. Hooten(Krista) of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Alliyah L. Hooten of Ellenwood, GA and Psalms M.
