Jeanette Louise Wegele, 83, of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Alma, died Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

Jeanette was born on September 10, 1938, in rural Edna, Kansas, the daughter of Howard Scott and Geneva Bessie (Sands) Rhodes. She attended grade school and graduated from Edna High School in 1956. Later, she attended Kansas State University.

Jeanette worked after high school for the Co-op Refinery in Coffeyville, where she met her future husband, John Edward Wegele. They were married November 12, 1960, in Coffeyville. He preceded her in death on October 27, 1976.

Jeanette and John lived in Alma and then after his death, she later moved to Topeka. Jeanette worked several years as a bookkeeper and accountant for Menniger’s Community Service Office and then worked, until her retirement, for Kansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Jeanette was a skilled knitter and crocheter and a member of the Topeka Crochet &amp; Knit Guild. She loved to play the piano and sing in the choir at Christ Lutheran Church where she was a member. Jeanette was an active member of her community. For 25 years she volunteered at Stormont-Vail Hospital with the auxiliary gift shop and by using her Mary Kay consultant skills cheering up patients by giving them makeovers. She also enjoyed volunteering at various other community activities. She enjoyed doing yard work, gardening, and baking, especially cookies, and loved everything Christmas. She was an avid Royals and Chiefs fan and loved attending her grand and great-grandchildren’s events. Her grandchildren all agree that Jeanette was a “hands on” grandma.

Jeanette is survived by her sons; John H. Wegele and Joel A. Wegele, both of Topeka; her grandchildren, Melissa Buescher, (Matt Dykstra), Topeka, Tyler Wegele, McFarland, Heather Noriega, Alma, and Cody Wegele, Lee Summit, Missouri; her great-grandchildren, Kimber, Peyton, Brody, Bennett, Adriana; and her siblings, Ronald Rhodes (Janice), Steve Rhodes (Joy), and Sharon Stalford (Ray), all of Edna, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, April 21, 2022, at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. Reverend Robert Grimm will be officiating. Jeanette will lie-in-state, on Wednesday, beginning at 4:00 pm, at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Alma, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Norman Delbert Honig, 95, of Onaga, Kansas, died Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at the Onaga Health and Rehab. He was a life-long resident of the area.

Norman was born on January 24, 1927, in rural Onaga, Kansas, the son of Otto and Adele Figge Honig. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke Lutheran South church. He attended St. Luke Lutheran parochial school through the eighth grade and then attended Onaga High School. Norman served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Norman worked most of his adult life as a stockman and farmer on the family farm southwest of Onaga. He was a true steward of the land and very proud of his operation and was recognized by receiving a county conservation award. Norman also worked for several years for the Onaga Lumber and Grain. Norman was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and served on the St. Luke Lutheran South Cemetery Board.

Norman married Ann B. Applegate on February 14, 1951. They were later divorced.

Norman is survived by his sons; Eugene Honig and Kenneth Honig (Suzy), both of Onaga; his sisters, Lavina Kolterman and Marcella Fairbanks, both of Onaga, and his brother, Lyle Honig, of Wamego; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton Kansas. Reverend Terry DeGiovanni will be officiating. Gregory (Greg) Wayne Miller of Wamego passed away April 13, 2022, at the age of 71 of Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Greg was born in Wamego, KS to Charles “Bud” and Joan (Craig) Miller March 3, 1951.

&nbsp; &nbsp;He was married to Betty Jo Dorr in 1972, and together they had daughters, Erin and Sarah. Greg and Betty Jo were later divorced.&nbsp; Greg married Elaine (Miller) on August 15, 1998. She survives of the home.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Greg attended grade school in Belvue, Ks, and graduated in 1969 from Wamego High School. He earned an associate's degree in landscape maintenance from Topeka Tech. Greg worked at Jeffrey Energy Center, Harmony Gardens, and in the K-State grounds department. Greg owned "Greg's Landscaping" for 35 years until his retirement in 2014.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Throughout his life, Greg strived to be outside while working and in his free time. He was usually found puttering around his yard or in his large garden. His horticulture knowledge and expertise was impressive. After his retirement, he volunteered in a nursing home greenhouse, which continued until his death. He loved "playing" in the dirt and propagating plants.&nbsp; He also enjoyed visits from the neighborhood dog, "Hunter" who would visit whenever he knew Greg was in the greenhouse. Greg would give him a treat, and he would be on his way but not until he got a head and neck massage. Greg’s biggest joy was when his grand kiddos Maggie and Myles visited, and he taught them how to plant and care for plants.

&nbsp; June of 2021 Greg was awarded the Jefferson Award sponsored by KSNTV- Topeka for his outstanding volunteering at the nursing home greenhouse. This well-deserved award recognized his dedication to his love for plants and his visits with the nursing home residents. This award was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for outstanding volunteers.

&nbsp; &nbsp;He and his family enjoyed road trips and camping vacations.&nbsp; As members of Kansas Explorers, he and Elaine’s quest was to visit and photograph all 105 Kansas courthouses.&nbsp; They were awarded the Architectural Explorer Award in 2005 and Kansas Explorer Quest in 2006. In 2012, Greg began traveling through Prudent Tour and Heritage Tours, and this continued until his health started failing last year due to Parkinson's Disease. Greg and Elaine took frequent road trips to Concordia, Lawrence, and Lenexa to spend special times with the grandkids. He was also recently involved in water aerobics at the Wamego Aquatic Center.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Greg was a former member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and a current member of the Wamego United Methodist Church

&nbsp; &nbsp;Greg is survived by his wife Elaine of the home, daughters Erin Miller Weiss (Bryan) of Lenexa and Sarah Ihde of Lawrence, granddaughter Maggie Weiss, and grandson Myles Weiss, brother Tom Miller (Sharon) of Emporia, Jayne Langvardt of Belvue, Donna (Mike) Jones of Belvue and Diane (Doug) Pageler of Boise, Idaho.&nbsp; He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.&nbsp;

Gregory Wayne Miller

&nbsp; Dr. Jon Michael Wefald, the former President of Kansas State University, passed away on the morning of April 16, 2022, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his father, Olav, his mother, Walma, and his sister, Beatrice Ann McKibben. Jon was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 24, 1937. Jon graduated from Minot, North Dakota High School in 1955. Jon loved to recall how one of his high school teachers told him not to think about attending college because he wasn’t smart enough. But, never one to back down, Jon went to college anyway. He attended Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Washington, and graduated Cum Laude in history. He then received a full ride to be a Teaching Assistant at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he received a Master’s Degree in American History. Jon then attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Ph.D. in American History in four years, and met his beloved wife, Ruth Ann. His doctoral dissertation was published in a book called A Voice of Protest that examined the role of Norwegian Americans in American politics. Jon’s Norwegian ancestors came to America in the late 1800s, and Jon was very proud of being 100% Norwegian. Jon and his wife, Ruth Ann Wefald, visited the country of Norway many times. In June of 1963 Jon and Ruth Ann Joynt were united in marriage. This year would have been their 59th wedding anniversary. Jon’s first full-time job after completing his doctoral degree was at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota starting in the fall of 1965. In 1970, Jon was appointed Commissioner of Agriculture by Wendell R. Anderson. In 1977, Jon was selected as President of Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota. In the very first fall he was there, Jon traveled to 94 high schools in the region and talked to about 50,000 high school students in a successful attempt to increase enrollment at the University. The next fall, freshman enrollment at Southwest Minnesota State University increased by over 30%. From that point on, people in Marshall, Minnesota and at Southwest State University claimed that Jon “saved” Southwest. In 1969, Jon and Ruth Ann were blessed by the birth of their son, Skipp Elliott Wefald, and in 1971 by the birth of Andrew Jon Wefald. Today they have seven wonderful grandchildren – Mikaela, Cassandra, Halle, Jonathan, Kayla, Carson, and Emma. They are also blessed by their daughter-in-law Fani. In 1980, Jon Wefald was chosen to be the Chancellor of Minnesota’s seven State Universities with an enrollment of over 50,000 students. Then, in 1986, the Kansas Board of Regents selected Jon Wefald to be the twelfth President of Kansas State University. He was the President of K-State for 23 years from 1986 to 2009. Jon transformed Kansas State University from top to bottom over 23 years and credited this success with his development of a superb system for the excellent people that reported to him. He created a brilliant system of delegation of authority and responsibility for them and for his new Academic Deans and Department Heads. Jon never would have accomplished so many historic and transformative accomplishments without the great work of his top Vice Presidents, his Deans, his Department Heads, and the great work of the K-State Faculty Senate and the leadership of the Student Senate leaders. Jon spoke highly of all those he worked with in his time at K-State, calling them brilliant problem solvers, with an attention to detail and a sense of urgency – these colleagues included, but are not limited to, Bob Krause, Jim Coffman, Tom Rawson, Pat Bosco, Beth Unger, Sue Peterson, and Chuck Reagan. In 1986, when Wefald became President of Kansas State University, the major concern was declining enrollment. From 1979 to 1986, the school’s enrollment had dropped by about 6,000 students. President Wefald made the turnaround of K-State’s student enrollment his Number One priority. Jon’s first hire came in his first week, when he hired Dr. Pat Bosco, an Assistant Vice President for Institutional Development. He made Dr. Bosco the key leader. Dr. Bosco did a brilliant job. During Wefald’s tenure, K-State enrollment soared from 15,000 students to 23,000 students – the greatest enrollment increase in the history of Kansas State University. From 1986 to 2009, Kansas State University was ranked Number 1 out of 500 public state universities in America in winning the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Udall scholarships. Throughout Jon’s 23 years as President, K-State students were awarded 129 of the highest ranked student scholarships in the nation. Also during Jon’s presidency, he was proud to welcome a number of distinguished guests to the Landon Lecture series, including President George W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, General Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, President Mikhail Gorbachev, and many others. Jon’s Chief of Staff, Charles Reagan, was a master at handling every detail for these outstanding speakers. From 1986 to 2009, the Wefald Administration constructed four of the most impressive buildings in the history of K-State: the Hale Library, the Beach Museum of Art, the Alumni Building, and the Leadership Studies Building. The K-State team constructed 35 new buildings over Jon’s 23 years. The total square footage of K-State in 2009 was 9,207,145 square feet, Wefald’s team constructed a total of 5,943,295 square feet – meaning that Wefald’s team constructed close to two-thirds of the entire campus over his tenure. These projects of the Wefald team would cost close to $3.5 billion dollars today. The Wefald Leadership team of Ron Trewyn, Jim Guikema, Sue Peterson, Tom Rawson, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts, and Governor Kathleen Sebelius led the way in securing support from state legislators and key members of Congress to vote for a proposal for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) building to be built at Kansas State University. The $1.4 billion dollar building now dominates much of K-State’s campus. It was 2006 in the living room of the K-State President’s home in a meeting between Senator Pat Roberts and Jon Wefald, where Jon said that he thought K-State could come up with the winning proposal out of all the state universities in the nation to win the vote for the NBAF proposal. Two years later, K-State won the proposal in a unanimous vote by the NBAF Commission. Jon’s memory at Kansas State University will live on through Wefald Hall, a splendid $80-million-dollar residence hall, named after Jon Wefald in 2017. Jon’s legacy extends through Manhattan, Kansas. Several years earlier, the Mayor of Manhattan and the Manhattan City Council also named the Manhattan City Pavilion after Jon and Ruth Ann. This pavilion is located in City Park, just a short distance south of the Kansas State campus. In 2001, Dr. Robert J. Shoop wrote a wonderful book about Jon’s presidency, called A University Renaissance: Jon Wefald's Presidency at Kansas State. At the conclusion of Jon’s tenure as president of K-State, he completed a book entitled The Transformative Years At Kansas State: The Years of President Jon Wefald from 1986 to 2009, about his 23 years as President at Kansas State University. In retirement, Jon and Ruth Ann made a decision to move permanently to their beloved lake home on Bay Lake, Minnesota. Their family has enjoyed making memories there since they purchased the home in 2002. Jon loved all of nature, especially birds, and wrote a paper about the beautiful loons on the lake, called “The Most Magical Bird in the World: The Common Loon.” Jon fed the birds each day and loved watching them enjoy the food that he so generously offered. Jon, in many respects, was a Renaissance man. He had a curious mind and wrote papers on such topics as General Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Genghis Khan, the Roman Colosseum, and the Negro Baseball Leagues. He loved reading history and was always eager to discuss it with friends, family, and colleagues. Jon also loved sports, and attended hundreds of K-State football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and baseball games. The hiring of Coach Bill Snyder in 1988 was one of his proudest achievements, and he loved every single victory that was celebrated under his leadership. Attending bowl games was a highlight of his years as president, and he kept in touch with many of his coach and player friends until the end. Another one of Jon’s great loves was the K-State Marching Band. Jon always said you have to have a great marching band if you want to have a great football team. Dr. Frank Tracz, Director of the K-State Band, remained one of Jon’s dearest friends well after Jon retired. The funeral will be held at All Faiths Chapel on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kansas, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 23, 2022. A lunch and reception will follow at 12:00 PM at Colbert Hills Golf Course, 5200 Colbert Hills Drive. Jon is lovingly remembered by his family by his kind and generous heart. He loved his family deeply and enjoyed the many phone calls and visits with them. Jon is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Ann, sons, Skipp and Andrew, daughter-in-law Fani, and grandchildren Mikaela, Cassandra, Halle, Jonathan, Kayla, Carson, and Emma. Jon is also survived by his two brothers and their wives, Knut and Joan Wefald and Bob and Susan Wefald, and their children. Jon will be greatly missed by all, and forever loved. He was preceded in death by his father, Olav, his mother, Walma, and his sister, Beatrice Ann McKibben. Jon was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 24, 1937. Jon graduated from Minot, North Dakota High School in 1955. Jon loved to recall how one of his high school teachers told him not to think about attending college because he wasn’t smart enough. But, never one to back down, Jon went to college anyway. He attended Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Washington, and graduated Cum Laude in history. He then received a full ride to be a Teaching Assistant at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he received a Master’s Degree in American History. Jon then attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Ph.D. in American History in four years, and met his beloved wife, Ruth Ann. His doctoral dissertation was published in a book called A Voice of Protest that examined the role of Norwegian Americans in American politics. Jon’s Norwegian ancestors came to America in the late 1800s, and Jon was very proud of being 100% Norwegian. Jon and his wife, Ruth Ann Wefald, visited the country of Norway many times. In June of 1963 Jon and Ruth Ann Joynt were united in marriage. This year would have been their 59th wedding anniversary. Jon’s first full-time job after completing his doctoral degree was at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota starting in the fall of 1965. In 1970, Jon was appointed Commissioner of Agriculture by Wendell R. Anderson. In 1977, Jon was selected as President of Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota. In the very first fall he was there, Jon traveled to 94 high schools in the region and talked to about 50,000 high school students in a successful attempt to increase enrollment at the University. The next fall, freshman enrollment at Southwest Minnesota State University increased by over 30%. From that point on, people in Marshall, Minnesota and at Southwest State University claimed that Jon “saved” Southwest. In 1969, Jon and Ruth Ann were blessed by the birth of their son, Skipp Elliott Wefald, and in 1971 by the birth of Andrew Jon Wefald. Today they have seven wonderful grandchildren – Mikaela, Cassandra, Halle, Jonathan, Kayla, Carson, and Emma. They are also blessed by their daughter-in-law Fani. In 1980, Jon Wefald was chosen to be the Chancellor of Minnesota’s seven State Universities with an enrollment of over 50,000 students. Then, in 1986, the Kansas Board of Regents selected Jon Wefald to be the twelfth President of Kansas State University. He was the President of K-State for 23 years from 1986 to 2009. Jon transformed Kansas State University from top to bottom over 23 years and credited this success with his development of a superb system for the excellent people that reported to him. He created a brilliant system of delegation of authority and responsibility for them and for his new Academic Deans and Department Heads. Jon never would have accomplished so many historic and transformative accomplishments without the great work of his top Vice Presidents, his Deans, his Department Heads, and the great work of the K-State Faculty Senate and the leadership of the Student Senate leaders. Jon spoke highly of all those he worked with in his time at K-State, calling them brilliant problem solvers, with an attention to detail and a sense of urgency – these colleagues included, but are not limited to, Bob Krause, Jim Coffman, Tom Rawson, Pat Bosco, Beth Unger, Sue Peterson, and Chuck Reagan. In 1986, when Wefald became President of Kansas State University, the major concern was declining enrollment. From 1979 to 1986, the school’s enrollment had dropped by about 6,000 students. President Wefald made the turnaround of K-State’s student enrollment his Number One priority. Jon’s first hire came in his first week, when he hired Dr. Pat Bosco, an Assistant Vice President for Institutional Development. He made Dr. Bosco the key leader. Dr. Bosco did a brilliant job. During Wefald’s tenure, K-State enrollment soared from 15,000 students to 23,000 students – the greatest enrollment increase in the history of Kansas State University. From 1986 to 2009, Kansas State University was ranked Number 1 out of 500 public state universities in America in winning the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Udall scholarships. Throughout Jon’s 23 years as President, K-State students were awarded 129 of the highest ranked student scholarships in the nation. Also during Jon’s presidency, he was proud to welcome a number of distinguished guests to the Landon Lecture series, including President George W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, General Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, President Mikhail Gorbachev, and many others. Jon’s Chief of Staff, Charles Reagan, was a master at handling every detail for these outstanding speakers. From 1986 to 2009, the Wefald Administration constructed four of the most impressive buildings in the history of K-State: the Hale Library, the Beach Museum of Art, the Alumni Building, and the Leadership Studies Building. The K-State team constructed 35 new buildings over Jon’s 23 years. The total square footage of K-State in 2009 was 9,207,145 square feet, Wefald’s team constructed a total of 5,943,295 square feet – meaning that Wefald’s team constructed close to two-thirds of the entire campus over his tenure. These projects of the Wefald team would cost close to $3.5 billion dollars today. The Wefald Leadership team of Ron Trewyn, Jim Guikema, Sue Peterson, Tom Rawson, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts, and Governor Kathleen Sebelius led the way in securing support from state legislators and key members of Congress to vote for a proposal for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) building to be built at Kansas State University. The $1.4 billion dollar building now dominates much of K-State’s campus. It was 2006 in the living room of the K-State President’s home in a meeting between Senator Pat Roberts and Jon Wefald, where Jon said that he thought K-State could come up with the winning proposal out of all the state universities in the nation to win the vote for the NBAF proposal. Two years later, K-State won the proposal in a unanimous vote by the NBAF Commission. Jon’s memory at Kansas State University will live on through Wefald Hall, a splendid $80-million-dollar residence hall, named after Jon Wefald in 2017. Jon’s legacy extends through Manhattan, Kansas. Several years earlier, the Mayor of Manhattan and the Manhattan City Council also named the Manhattan City Pavilion after Jon and Ruth Ann. This pavilion is located in City Park, just a short distance south of the Kansas State campus. In 2001, Dr. Robert J. Shoop wrote a wonderful book about Jon’s presidency, called A University Renaissance: Jon Wefald's Presidency at Kansas State. At the conclusion of Jon’s tenure as president of K-State, he completed a book entitled The Transformative Years At Kansas State: The Years of President Jon Wefald from 1986 to 2009, about his 23 years as President at Kansas State University. In retirement, Jon and Ruth Ann made a decision to move permanently to their beloved lake home on Bay Lake, Minnesota. Their family has enjoyed making memories there since they purchased the home in 2002. Jon loved all of nature, especially birds, and wrote a paper about the beautiful loons on the lake, called “The Most Magical Bird in the World: The Common Loon.” Jon fed the birds each day and loved watching them enjoy the food that he so generously offered. Jon, in many respects, was a Renaissance man. He had a curious mind and wrote papers on such topics as General Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Genghis Khan, the Roman Colosseum, and the Negro Baseball Leagues. He loved reading history and was always eager to discuss it with friends, family, and colleagues. Jon also loved sports, and attended hundreds of K-State football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and baseball games. The hiring of Coach Bill Snyder in 1988 was one of his proudest achievements, and he loved every single victory that was celebrated under his leadership. Attending bowl games was a highlight of his years as president, and he kept in touch with many of his coach and player friends until the end. Another one of Jon’s great loves was the K-State Marching Band. Jon always said you have to have a great marching band if you want to have a great football team. Dr. Frank Tracz, Director of the K-State Band, remained one of Jon’s dearest friends well after Jon retired. The funeral will be held at All Faiths Chapel on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kansas, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 23, 2022. A lunch and reception will follow at 12:00 PM at Colbert Hills Golf Course, 5200 Colbert Hills Drive. Jon is lovingly remembered by his family by his kind and generous heart. He loved his family deeply and enjoyed the many phone calls and visits with them. Jon is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Ann, sons, Skipp and Andrew, daughter-in-law Fani, and grandchildren Mikaela, Cassandra, Halle, Jonathan, Kayla, Carson, and Emma. Jon is also survived by his two brothers and their wives, Knut and Joan Wefald and Bob and Susan Wefald, and their children. Jon will be greatly missed by all, and forever loved. He grew up on a farm in the Talmage area, where he attended grade school. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1968. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher, working many years with his father. He served on the Flora Township Board for more than 25 years and as a local volunteer firefighter. He was a longtime member of the Longford Rodeo Club and enjoyed helping with the annual Longford Rodeo. He also was a member of the Longford Lions Club. He enjoyed riding horses, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family, and friends. He especially enjoyed taking his grandsons on tractor and four-wheeler rides. On March 21, 1970, he was united in marriage to Cindy Watson, of Abilene. Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Cindy, of the home, two daughters Karrey Britt (Chris Hoppe), of Lawrence; and Kandi Britt of Topeka; and four grandsons, Aidan Weeks and Jonathan Britt, of Topeka; and Will and Noah Lutter, of Wamego; brothers Ronald Britt, of Maineville, Ohio, and Steve Britt, of Salina, sister Karen Watt, of Salina; and many nieces and nephews. David was born November 24, 1956, in Pittsburgh, PA the son of Edward Lawrence and Edna Mae (Peters) Williams, Sr. David joined the Army in 1975 as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic. During his service, he deployed to Kuwait in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and conducted mechanic support to missions in Korea, Germany, and the United States. David retired after 20 years of federal service in 1995 at Fort Riley, KS where he transitioned to a position as a contractor mechanic. Dave was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved to share his passion with his children and grandchildren. Some of his best memories were spending quality time with his family in the great outdoors. After retirement, his hobbies included gardening, ammo reloading, arms collection, and any activities his grandchildren participated in. He also volunteered time as a civilian marksman training and mentoring kids on weapons safety and marksmanship. Survivors include his wife Sun of the home in Junction City, KS; one son, David L. Keith D. Bruce 55 of Junction City passed away April 5, 2022. He was born January 30, 1967 in Huntingburg, Indiana, the son of Richard Bruce and Rebecca (Spaw) Bruce. 

Keith enlisted in the United States Army July 25, 1985. He spent 27 ½ years working for the government as a target System repairs specialist. On September 12, 1987 he was united in marriage to Melissa Jones in Abilene.

 Keith is survived by his loving wife Melissa of the home. One daughter, Danielle Bruce (Cory Dawson) of Abilene and Anthony Bruce (Daniela) of Junction City. Five grandchildren: Dallas Stewart; Destiny Jones; Stormy Jones; Aiden Yeamans; Ava Dawson. Two brothers, Robert Denton Jr and Jarrod Bruce. One sister, Natalie Denton-Decker. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert Denton and Rebecca (Spaw) Bruce.

William E. “Bill” Griggs passed away suddenly on April 8, 2022 at his home in Abilene. He was born July 13, 1961, at Ft. Riley, Kansas, the son of William and Sue (Morrison) Griggs. He graduated from Manhattan High School and from Manhattan Tech. Bill was an Electrical Lineman for DS&amp;O for over 40 years where he started out of Manhattan Tech and worked his entire career. His DS&amp;O family were his second family. He enjoyed golfing, riding his Razr, and was an avid K-State Football fan. Bill loved time spent with his Peeps friends and family. He dreamt of travel in his retirement but sadly that wasn’t realized. On August 3, 2013 he was united in marriage to Patricia “Pat” Langdon in Littleton Colorado. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his daughters Michelle Griggs of Devine, Texas, Jordan Ward and her husband Paul of Manassas, Virginia, step daughter Brooke Langdon of Denver, Colorado, Son Travis Griggs of Wichita, Step son Nolan Langdon of Lawrence, nephew Jarrod Griggs of Manhattan, granddaughter Caydence Negrete and step grandson Watson St. John. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Roy and Ryan. William E. “Bill” Griggs passed away suddenly on April 8, 2022 at his home in Abilene. He was born July 13, 1961, at Ft. Riley, Kansas, the son of William and Sue (Morrison) Griggs. He graduated from Manhattan High School and from Manhattan Tech. Bill was an Electrical Lineman for DS&amp;O for over 40 years where he started out of Manhattan Tech and worked his entire career. His DS&amp;O family were his second family. He enjoyed golfing, riding his Razr, and was an avid K-State Football fan. Bill loved time spent with his Peeps friends and family. He dreamt of travel in his retirement but sadly that wasn’t realized. On August 3, 2013 he was united in marriage to Patricia “Pat” Langdon in Littleton Colorado. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his daughters Michelle Griggs of Devine, Texas, Jordan Ward and her husband Paul of Manassas, Virginia, step daughter Brooke Langdon of Denver, Colorado, Son Travis Griggs of Wichita, Step son Nolan Langdon of Lawrence, nephew Jarrod Griggs of Manhattan, granddaughter Caydence Negrete and step grandson Watson St. John. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Roy and Ryan. Cynthia "Cindy" Diana Higgins, 62, of Florissant, Missouri met her Lord and savior, Jesus Christ on March 31, 2022. Cindy was born November 20, 1959, in New Orleans, Louisiana, the daughter of Eve and Duward Brown. In this life, we are given free will by God. Many choices and distractions may come, but we individually have the freedom to choose whom we will serve. Some sadly choose self over God. Some allow their goals and accomplishments to take priority in their lives, outweighing their family, their relationship with the Lord our God and their peace. Cindy Higgins lived seeking Christ, seeking to provide and care for her family, and for her community in Junction City, KS. A woman face with many challenges that most would have never had made it through, loosing not one but three precious children, Sherry, Holly, and Cecil. Taking care of her loving husband Pat Higgins for so many years through his sickness was the true wedding vow of sickness and in health, however, she remained humbled and continued to seek the face of Jesus. Cindy lived with purpose, a woman on a mission, and that mission was to make sure that everyone in her life knew how special they were and how she loved everyone equally. She lived not for earthly achievements; she lived for Jesus and her family. I know without a doubt that Cindy today is rejoicing in Heaven with angels. Heaven has gained a Godly woman and is brighter with her there. All who knew and loved Cindy have been forever inspired and changed through the love she shared throughout her life. She was known for being the town's Grandma to so many kids and a second mother to most. Rest in peace Cindy Higgins, you have fought a good fight. To her family that she leaves behind, cry not and do not loose faith as we will see her again in heaven. Virginia F. “Jean” White, age 73, of Blue Rapids, passed away peacefully at her home with family about her, on Tuesday, April 5, 2022.&nbsp; Jean was born April 25, 1948, in Omaha, Nebraska. She is the daughter of James and Irene F. (Jarzynka) Whitley.

Jean had worked at Cambridge Place as a Certified Medicine Aide for twenty years, retiring in 2020.&nbsp; She loved her children and grandkids.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed playing Santa Claus. She would do things for them and give them gifts, often buying their presents years in advance.&nbsp; She also enjoyed playing Bingo and going to the casino.

Survivors include her three children:&nbsp; Angie (Jim) Whiting of Waterville, Dana White of Blue Rapids and Dennis (Heather) White of Winfield, two siblings: Clifford (Patty) Whitley of Ralston, Nebraska and Julie Kuhn of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, seven grandchildren: Jessica, Brittney, Skylar, Ty, Shelby, Adrianne and Abby.&nbsp; Jean was preceded in death by her parents, a son David White, a grandson Jacob White and a sister Geraldine Allen.

Daniel D. Kline (Pastor Dan), age 71 of West Grove, PA and former Pastor of First Baptist Church of Clay Center, KS passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on February 27, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Lynchburg, VA in 1950 to the late Karl L. Kline and Arline Kline Gunderson.

Dan was a 1969 graduate of Emmaus High School in Emmaus, PA and a Graduate of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY.

Dan’s full time ministry life included the following: Associate Pastor of Kanawha City Baptist Church in Charleston, WV, Christian Ed / Youth / Music Pastor at First Baptist Church of South Charleston, WV, Youth Pastor and Interim Pastor at Clarksburg Baptist Church and VA Chaplain in Clarksburg, WV, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Clay Center, KS, Meadowlark Hospice Chaplain in Clay Center, KS, Senior Pastor of Willow Grove Baptist Church Willow Grove, PA, Senior Pastor of Kennett Square First Baptist Church in Kennett Square, PA, EPIC Ministry Pastor at Avondale Presbyterian Church, Avondale, PA and Associate Pastor of Media Mennonite Church - now called Waterway Church in Oxford, PA.

Dan retired from full time ministry in 2018 due to declining health but remained a faithful Pastor to many and found creative ways to share the gospel wherever he went.&nbsp; Three simple words, “Enjoy the Gift” was his way of creating a joyful introduction to any stranger that he would meet.&nbsp; This opened up the door to share Jesus with them.&nbsp; Dan’s gift of compassion for others led him to visit many people over the years in their time of need.&nbsp; Dan had a beautiful singing voice and played his guitar for over 55 years.&nbsp; He was a man of Prayer.&nbsp; He will be remembered as well for his quick puns and jokes!

Dan’s life verse was Romans 1:16 “ For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.”

In 1984, Dan married Cheryl Baughman Kline with whom he shared 38 years of life together in full-time ministry.&nbsp; Dan was a faithful dedicated father to daughter, Alicia Kline Hendrickson and son, Joshua Kline.

Dan is survived by his wife Cheryl, daughter Alicia Kline Hendrickson, son-in-law Chuck Hendrickson, all of West Grove, PA, and son Joshua Kline of Anderson, Indiana.

Also surviving are his brothers, Dave (Patricia) Kline of Sewell, NJ, Jon (Joanne) of Franklinville, NJ, sister Cheryl DeShazier of CharlesTown, IN; sister, Karlene VanNess of West Sussex England and half brother George Jones of Santa Cruz, CA, and extended family.

A Service will be held at&nbsp; First Baptist Church in Clay Center KS, on Saturday, May 21st at 11:00 a.m.. Friends can visit with the family 1 hour prior to the service.&nbsp;

Christi Renee Spielman, 54, was surrounded by her family as she passed away on the morning of March 30, 2022. She was born November 10, 1967 at Topeka to Lloyd and Patricia (Olejnik) Tomson. She graduated from Rossville High School in 1986 and went on to attend and graduate from Washburn University. Christi married Michael K. Spielman on September 25, 1994 at Sacred Heart in Delia, Kansas. They raised 3 children, Benjamin, Brandon and Katelyn (Katie). Christi was employed at Fork in the Road, Riley, Kansas. She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Clay Center. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Spielman.

Matthew Scott Heller, 42 of Solomon passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2022. He was born in Salina September 4, 1979, the son of Scott and Kathie (Rider) Heller. He grew up in Solomon and graduated from Solomon High School in 1998. On July 4, 2009 he was united in marriage to Danielle Dupal in Abilene.

 Matt loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and sports of all kinds especially watching his Chicago Bears play football. He was a big animal lover who adored his dogs and cat, but above all he loved watching his nephews play their sports.

 Matt is survived by his loving wife Danielle of the home. Parents, Scott and Kathie Heller of Solomon. Brother, Brian Heller (Leannitta) and Nephews Kadin and Holton. Brothers-in-law: William Dupal JR (Sally) and Nathan Dupal (Rachel) and Niece Stella. Sister-in-law: Heather Michalek and Nephew Tyler. Father-in-law William Dupal (Kathy) and Mother-in-law, Grace Dupal, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins along with several lifelong friends he considered family. Betty J. Fay, age 94, of Manhattan, died April 6, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan. She was born April 29, 1927, in Manhattan, the daughter of Otis Fleming and F. Ada Dresser. Betty graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Manhattan and attended Marymount College in Salina. She worked for 25 years for McCall Pattern Company. She started folding patterns and worked her way up to being the data entry position with the company. Betty was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and was very active with the Riley County Seniors’ Service Center. She enjoyed doing crafts including painting, sewing, and pottery. Betty also enjoyed the trips with Manhattan Parks and Recreation, visiting antique stores, going for rides in the country and her pet cats. In 1947, in Manhattan, she was married to James Fay. Mr. Fay preceded her in death in 2020. Survivors include her seven children: Michael Fay of Emporia, Patrick Fay of Manhattan, Carolyn Deweese of Wamego, Kevin Fay of Manhattan, Kim McBee of Florida, Kelly Fay of Manhattan, and Erin Hunsinger of Kansas City, MO; 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; one brother Carl J. Carlson of MO. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 13th, at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery on Elbow Creek east of Manhattan. A graveside service with military honors are pending at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Ron was born April 15, 1968, the son of Ronald George-Bernard and Betty Mae (Clossin) Schnurr. Ron served five years in the United States Army. After his Army career at Ft. Riley, he stayed and lived in Geary County, Kansas where he raised his family and worked on a farm. He married Joleen Enfield in Junction City, KS. They were married for twenty eight years. William R. "Bill" McMichael, 53, Junction City, KS, died Thursday, March 17, 2022 at his residence. Cremation will take place. A graveside service with military honors will be held at a later date at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. William “Bill” McMichael was born on March 1, 1969 in Troy Michigan to Nelson Bruce and Betty Sue (Tripp) McMichael. Bill enlisted in the US Army as an Infantryman and served until he retired in June 2014. During his enlistment he was awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Campaign Star, the Army Commendation Medal (5th Award), the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Good Conduct Medal (4th Award), the National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), the Iraq Campaign Medal w/ Campaign Star, the Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, The Army Service Ribbon/Overseas Service Ribbon (4th Award), the Nato Medal (2nd Award) the Multinational Force and Observers Medal and others. After retiring, he chose to stay in the Fort Riley area living in Junction City. Bill spent his time fishing and golfing, his two passions. You could usually find him at Moon Lake, at the dam spillway, or other quiet holes fishing, and then giving away his catch. He was also an avid golfer. Most recently he worked at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course doing what he loved. Bill was a member of American Legion, Memorial Post 40, Leonardville, KS. He actively participated in post events as well as many American Legion events throughout Kansas. Most notably was the Annual Big Red One Turkey Run for the Warrior Transition Battalion Soldiers and Operation North Pole. Bill also helped out with the weekly Pointman Dinners at the WTB, giving a listening ear, some past life experiences, and helping out in any way that he could. Bill gave selflessly, and everyone knew when he was around with his generosity and his exuberant personality. Bill leaves behind two children, Kyle McMichael and Kaitlynn McMichael, both of Michigan, as well are his two furbabies Nautica and Chief. He also leaves behind a host of friends and adopted family both here in this area and across the United States. Bill’s parting, leaves a big hole in the hearts of those who knew him. We loved him dearly and he will be missed. Please take time to hug your family and friends and hold them close. Be vigilant and watchful. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a silent killer.

Virginia F. “Jean” White, age 73, of Blue Rapids, passed away peacefully at her home with family about her, on Tuesday, April 5, 2022.&nbsp; Jean was born April 25, 1948, in Omaha, Nebraska. She is the daughter of James and Irene F. (Jarzynka) Whitley.Jean had worked at Cambridge Place as a Certified Medicine Aide for twenty years, retiring in 2020.&nbsp; She loved her children and grandkids.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed playing Santa Claus. Daniel D. Kline (Pastor Dan), age 71 of West Grove, PA and former Pastor of First Baptist Church of Clay Center, KS passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior on February 27, 2022.&nbsp; He was born in Lynchburg, VA in 1950 to the late Karl L.
