Shirley Marshall, 93 of Clifton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at the Park Villa Nursing Home in Clyde, Kansas at the of 93. She was born October 1, 1928, in Clay County, Kansas the daughter of Carlos and Rose (Bowmaker) Knox.

Shirley was raised in the Clifton area and graduated from Clifton HIGH School in 1947. She married Derrell Marshall on May 22, 1947. They made their home in the Clifton area where they raised their five children. Shirley was a member of the St. Marys Catholic Church, St. Marys Alter Society and Clifton American Legion Auxiliary. Shirley was a homemaker until her children all entered school. She then worked for the local grocery store for over twenty years. After retirement she served as an Avon Representative for the Clifton area. Shirley was a kind and generous soul. She gifted many of her Avon items to children for gifts to their moms, the elderly and lonely in care homes. She loved playing cards with her family and friends*

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters, Georgia Barnes, Imateen Brown and Rama Sorell; two brothers, Bruce Knox and Darwin Knox; three grandsons, Shawn Flesher, Seth Marshall and Chris Finkbiner.

Survivors include her daughters, Tanis (Elmer) Finkbiner, Lawrence, KS, Joan (Joe) Flesher, Clifton, KS and Susan (Larry) Thomas, Clay Center, KS; sons, Stan (Ann) Marshall, Clifton, KS and Dan (Marla) Marshall, Clay Center, KS; 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren; sister, Lana Carlson, Clay Center, KS; brother, Ron (June) Knox, Edmond, OK and sister-in-law Verna Mae Knox, Clifton, KS.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clifton, KS.&nbsp; The Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 14, 2022 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clifton, KS.

Interment will be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, rural Clifton, KS.

Pierre Scharfe, age 75, of Manhattan, died March 8, 2022, at his residence. He was born August 20, 1946, in Vallander, Germany, the son of Willy and Marianne (Poschardt) Scharfe. Pierre served in the United States Army from April 15, 1966 to April 14, 1970. He served in Vietnam and was honorable discharged at the rank of Sergeant. He was the credit and collections and later accounts payable supervisor for McCall Pattern Company. He also worked for a liquor store, Hibachi Hut and for many years at Harry’s Restaurant along with his full-time job at McCall’s. Pierre loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed movies, drives and traveling Route 66, his orange/black 69 Camaro, keeping his car spotless, going to car shows, seeing the sights, history, reading, surfing when younger, airplanes, his pet dogs and working in the yard. He was very social and enjoyed his coffee group, and serving on his homeowner’s association board. On May 23, 1986, he was married to Susan Zarger. Susan survives of the home. Additional survivors include his daughter Wendy (Scharfe) Orf and her husband Chris of Nixa, Missouri; brother Rene Scharfe of Buckeye, CA; two grandsons: Blaine Kearns and William Scharfe; and his daughter in law Mary Scharfe. Pierre was preceded in death his son Robert Scharfe and his sister Elizabeth Scharfe. The family will receive family and friends from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 17th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. Laurie Ann Mathos, 65, of Manhattan, passed away Wednesday, March 2nd, 2022. She was the Quality Control Manager at the Alorica Call Center. Laurie was born in Oak Park, IL on October 20, 1956, the daughter of Robert Guelle, who survives in Jonesboro, Ark, and the late Ann (Grasse) Guelle. Laurie graduated from Oak Forrest High School in Oak Park, Illinois. She received a bachelor's degree and a Masters's degree in Human Resources from the American InterContinental University. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan and also served in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 1981. Laurie is survived by her father, Robert Guelle; daughter, Rhonda Lee Mathos, son-in-law Jason Hornbeck, of Manhattan; her son, Scott (daughter-in-law Tina) Mathos, of Edgerton, Kansas; also surviving is a brother, David (Jane) Guelle of Bradley Illinois; three grandchildren, Allie Mathos, Aaron Mathos, Ariana Hornbeck; and her cat Emmy (this cat was her baby who she adopted and loved). James “Jim” F. Westerhaus Jr. passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at the age of 83. Jim was born December 15, 1938 to James F. Westerhaus Sr. and Mary Catherine (Carrigan) Westerhaus in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from St Mary’s High School in Wichita, KS. He went on to study at St. Benedict’s College (Benedictine College) in Atchison, Kansas. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1960. After graduating from college, he began his teaching career at St. Mary’s High School in St. Benedict, Kansas. He taught English, PE and Driver’s Education and coached basketball. After teaching there for three years, he accepted a teaching job at St. Xavier’s High School in Junction City, Kansas. He taught English, Speech, Physical Education and Health. He was head basketball coach for 9 years, and also an assistant coach for football and track. He touched many lives at St Xavier’s and could share some great stories of his athletes and students. While teaching, he also worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Milford Lake for 10 summers. Jim loved all things sports oriented and was employed as a sports director through civil service at Fort Riley, retiring after 42 years of service.

December 28, 1963 he married Ellen Elizabeth Heiman at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. Jim and Ellen were blessed with four children. Jim was very active in supporting The Girl Scouts of Geary County for 50 years and was a caretaker for Camp Cutteru for nearly 30 years. He was also active in Junction City Junior Baseball association, YMCA youth sports and was inducted into the ASA Softball Hall of Fame. He also volunteered at the Geary County Food Pantry, and was currently a board member. He served as president of the Greenhills Homeowners Association, and was a member of The Knights of Columbus, St. Francis Xavier Church and a resident of Junction City for 58 years. After retirement, Jim loved to garden and could grow just about anything from a seed. His love for sports carried on following his grandkids to their sporting events, along with supporting and enjoying Blue Jay athletics. He was also an avid Wichita State Shockers fan and Nebraska Husker fan. He had a liking for model trains, enjoyed all kinds of racing and lots of front porch sitting. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, you knew to listen. Jim was preceded in death by his parents: James Sr. and Mary Westerhaus and his sister Mary Ann Kristek. Jim is survived by his wife Ellen (Heiman) Westerhaus of 58 years and his children: Shelly (Steve) Buhler, Topeka, KS; Ellie (Ken) Dillon, Junction City, KS; Cheryl (Darrin) Deters, Baileyville, KS; and Matt (Gretchen) Westerhaus, Junction City, KS. He is also survived by four granddaughters, Jena, Jesslyn, Kate and Maura; six grandsons, Matt, Mitch, Brandon, Cole, Peyton and Kody; one great granddaughter, three great grandsons and his aunt Gere Carrigan, Atchison KS; one brother-in-law, Albert Kristek of Auburn, WA; one niece and three nephews. Duane E. Slingsby, 94 died March 7, 2022, in Manhattan, KS.&nbsp; He was born on August 15, 1927, in Clay County, the son of Walter W. and Chattie (Gibbs) Slingsby.&nbsp; Duane grew up on a farm near Green, KS.&nbsp; He graduated from Green Rural High School and enlisted in the US Navy.&nbsp; Duane served during WWII aboard the USS Iowa battleship.&nbsp; He married Bonnie Oard on July 28, 1949.&nbsp; Duane farmed before making his home in Clay Center.&nbsp; He worked for Northern Natural Gas, and he owned and operated the Slingsby Insurance and Real Estate Agency.&nbsp; Duane was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clay Center and the V.F.W in Green.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn (Slingsby) Shafer and Twila (Slingsby) White-Shivers.

Duane enjoyed life to its fullest traveling, playing golf, boating, camping, rock hunting, and fishing. &nbsp; He enjoyed every moment of life alongside his family and many friends.

Duane is survived by his wife, Bonnie Slingsby of Clay Center; daughter, Deborah and husband David Abner of Manhattan; sons: Walter Slingsby and the late Carol Slingsby and Michael and wife Lori Slingsby both of Clay Center; 10 Grandchildren and 16 Great-grandchildren.

Duane E. Slingsby

On March 6, 2022, LuEllen Maxine (Goldenstein) Trahan, 97, passed away at Mount Joseph Nursing Home, Concordia, KS. She was born May 26, 1924, to Earl and Ellen (Bremerman) Goldenstein at Flagler, Colorado.

She grew up in the Cloud county area. Graduated from Miltonvale Rural High School, received her teaching certificate, and taught school in a one room school house.

She joined the Catholic Church prior to marrying Everett L. Trahan on May 4, 1944 at St. Anthony’s Church in Miltonvale. To this union were born eight children. Larry, Carmen, Coleen Paillet, Mary Ann, Randy, Ava Trahan, Max and Yvette Trahan.

Proceeding her in death were her parents, husband Everett, daughter Mary Ann, grandson Joshua Paillet, son-in-law Kenny Paillet, daughter-in-law Margie (Ensign) Trahan, her sister Emily Walmsley and&nbsp; brother Larry Earl Goldenstein.

Her love of teaching was shared in the CCD program where she also served as the coordinator for several years. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Altar Society, where she helped with countless projects, giving of her time and treasure. She practiced her faith quietly with strength and steadfastness.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She leaves 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Amanda Spomer, 32, of Clay Center, died Friday, March 4, 2022 at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.&nbsp; She was the daughter of LeAnn Bott-Spomer and the late Douglas Spomer.

Judy Kay Wyckoff, 68 of Abilene passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022. She was born January 9, 1954 in Clay Center, Kansas the daughter of Bill and Phyllis (Beals) Shields. Judy grew up in the Abilene area and graduating from Abilene High School in 1972. On June 10, 1972 she was united in marriage to Larry Gene Wyckoff. She worked as a dietary aide for different nursing homes and she later worked at Walmart.

 Judy is survived by her daughter, Wendy (Jason) Wyckoff of Ramona. One brother, Philip (Penny) Shields of Branson, Missouri. Two grandchildren, Gene and Phoenix Wyckoff. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Bill Shields Jr.

 Judy’s wishes were to be cremated.&nbsp; A Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m.., Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. Family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m.&nbsp; on Saturday until services time.

Etta Mae Garten, 98 of Abilene passed away Tuesday March 8, 2022 at Village Manor Nursing Home. She was born December 8, 1923, the daughter of William and Rose (Houlton) Higer. On May 12, 1940 she was united in marriage to Joseph Garten. He preceded her in death October 28, 1975.

 Etta Mae is survived by her daughter, Rosetta (Creach) Grayson and one son, Lonnie (Rosalie) Garten. Eight grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and twenty-eight great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joseph, one great-grandson, Cory Booms and a sister, Bess“Rusty” Allen.

Anthony “Tony” Mark Ekart, age 83 passed away peacefully on March 3, 2022 at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. The oldest son of Anthony “Tony” and Angela Ekart, Tony was born on April 1, 1938 in Flush, KS. Tony attended Seven Dolors Elementary School and after graduating from Maur Hill Preparatory High School, he went to work with his father at Ekarts Automotive. Tony met the love of his life, Donna Marie Worchester in 1953, and they married in August of 1958. Tony and Donna had two daughters, Jana Marie Long and Elaine Rene Richter. Tony was a well-respected auto technician in Manhattan his entire life. He taught Auto Mechanics at Manhattan Vo-Tech for several years, which was his passion. Tony went on to open his own business, The Car Clinic in the early 1980’s.&nbsp; Tony was also an avid bass fisherman and started one of Kansas’ first professional Bass Fishing tournament circuits, Kansas Professional Bass Anglers or KPBA. Tony is survived by his loving wife, Donna and both daughters, seven grandchildren, Tony Long, Amy Hall, Amber Long, Sarah Lorson, Kayla Wall, Eric Richter, Alex Richter; 14 great-grandchildren, one Aunt, Dotty O’Shea, and many cousins. Tony is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Tom Ekart, Carrol “Wally” Ekart, and James “Jimmy” Ekart. Tony was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend, he will be greatly missed by all. Duane Edwin Rose, 73, formerly of Hutchinson and Lawrence passed away early Saturday, March 5th, at his residence in Manhattan. He was a retired supervisor for Garvey Grain Company in Hutchinson, and for 12 years at the Lawrence Paper Company in the shipping department in Lawrence, Kansas. Duane was born in Scott City, Kansas on July 18, 1948, the son of the late Estaline June (Tellus) and Gerald Edwin Rose. He was the husband of Marilyn R. (Mandeville) Rose who resides of the home. They were married on May 7, 1987, in Hutchinson, and for their honeymoon, they celebrated by playing golf after the wedding, a passion they both enjoyed. Duane is survived by three sons Steven (Esmeralda) Pate, of Manhattan; Bob (Brandi) Lewis, of Maple Hill; Jason Rose, of Hutchinson; four grandchildren (Tristan &amp; Aiden Pate; Arlett &amp; Amanda Gutierrez-Vizuet). Vernon Lee "Shorty" White, 84, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, KS. Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 26, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Dirk Weiss officiating. Shorty was born February 22, 1938, in Belleville, KS the son of Robert Redman and Lillian (Cibolski) White. Shorty graduated from Belleville High School with the class of 1956 where he played football, basketball and tennis. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served from 1956 until 1960 with the Construction Battalion, known as the "Seabees", in the Aleutian Islands and Okinawa. Shorty married his high school sweetheart Karen Reed on Christmas Day 1959 while on leave. They remained married until she passed away in 2015. Shorty worked as an electrician at the Municipal Power Plant for the City of Belleville, KS. He later moved to Junction City, KS and worked for the Kansas Power and Light Company. Shorty was an active sportsman and hunter. He played tennis, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, softball and baseball. He coached his kids in baseball and softball and schooled them and his nephews in tennis, basketball, and racquetball. Survivors include two sons, Brad White and his wife Christine of Lincoln, NE and Gary White and his wife Laura of Mission, KS; one daughter, Brenda White of Mission, KS; seventeen grandchildren, Rosemary, Pierce, Priscilla and her husband Augusto, Carina, Joel, Troy, Lance, Valerie, Bethany, Andrea, Grant, Craig, Scott, Flint, Mark and Elizabeth; numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Karen; one brother and two sisters.

She was born in Eastern Geary County, KS, to Fred Brown &amp; Louisa Morgan Brown on April 26, 1926, the fourth of their five children. She spent her early years on the family farm and graduated from Alta Vista High School. Brownie married Roland Norbert Junghans in the summer of 1947, and they made their home on Humboldt Creek, farming and ranching, for many years. Upon selling the farm and moving to Junction City, she worked as a Loan Officer for Central National Bank for 20+ years, where she was well known in the community for her advice and guidance on financial matters. After retiring from the bank, she stayed busy with Real Estate and Property Management, and also held an active role in the management of JJ Marine in Junction City. Brownie was well loved in her community and known for her positive attitude, amazing fashion sense, quick sense of humor and sassy personality. She was preceded in death by her former husbands, Roland Junghans and Gary W. Dugan. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Russell Brown and Max Brown, and her sister Donna Lee Olson. Mr. Kurtze was born January 20, 1944 in Junction City, KS, to the late Warren Leonard Kurtze and Dorothy Mae Gaston Kurtze. He was a former resident of Cotopaxi, CO and Brevard, NC, having made Aiken, SC his home for the past six months. Mr. Kurtze was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from the Federal Aviation Administration with 35 years of service. During his career with the F.A.A., he was recruited by the Secret Service on a special assignment at Camp David assisting the President of the United States. He was a true patriot who was proud to serve his country. Following his retirement, Mr. Kurtze taught high school psychology for three years. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was known for having a servant’s heart. Mr. Kurtze extended his Christ-like love toward everyone he met, continually searching for ways to help others in need and always do so anonymously. One of his greatest passions was genealogy and researching his family heritage. He also, ministered to prisoners and along with his wife, served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Columbia, SC and Brevard, NC. Mr. Kurtze adored his family and enjoyed every moment he spent with them. He was married to his wife, Kay L. Kurtze, for eleven years. As an expression of his love, he gave his sweetheart flowers every month of their marriage without fail. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Kurtze. Survivors include his wife, Kay L. He was born on February 23, 1978 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Francis and JoAnne Marie (Holten) Sutton.

On August 1, 2000 in Manhattan, he married Marcie Anne Hagenmaier.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

John worked at the Wichita Greyhound Park until its closing, in various capacities, starting at the bottom and working his way up to better positions.&nbsp; He then started working as a customer service representative and technician for One Call Concepts.&nbsp; In 2009, he had kidney failure, receiving a transplant in 2013.&nbsp; He later moved to Topeka.&nbsp; John loved spending time with his family and taking his kids to practices and games.&nbsp; He was excellent at cooking and drawing.&nbsp; When he wasn’t able to get around as well, he enjoyed watching YouTube and TikTok videos.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one his children, Riley John Sutton and Madeline Ann-Louise Sutton, both of Topeka; his father, Francis Sutton of Kansas City, Kansas; his siblings, Eligia Morales, Amber Lopez-Guzman and Francis Sutton, Jr., all of Kansas City, Kansas; his father-in-law, Frank Hagenmaier of Randolph; his step-dad, Chet Stone of Kingston, Missouri; his dog, Jack Jack and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.

On February 26th, 2022, Patricia Lynn Holly, age 73, of Humboldt, Arizona, passed away after a month long battle with Covid-related pneumonia. She went peacefully with her loving family at her side.

Patricia was born the daughter of Jim and Mary Wiggins on September 24th, 1948, in Marysville, KS. She graduated in the Class of 1966 from Marysville High School and then was married to Gary Holly of Blue Rapids, KS on June 12th, 1966. They remained best friends and lovers until the day she died. She and her husband were a perfect example of what a happy marriage should be. They taught their children and grandchildren the value of honesty, integrity, and the importance of a loving and supportive family.

She most recently worked in the cafeteria at the high school in Fairbury, NE and spoke often of how much fun she had with the ladies that worked there. Patricia enjoyed camping, painting, kayaking, crafts, Arizona sunsets and spending time with her family. Her spark and her laughter will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Patricia is survived by her beloved husband Gary, two sons David and Brett, daughter Lisa Dickson, sisters Marilyn Oehm and Barbara Seematter, 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her sister Genie Lamb and her parents.

Jason Ray Puett, age 49 of Riley, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022, at his home.

He was born on August 5, 1972, in Junction City, to the parents of Lester "Butch" Dean and Laura Sharon (Pascarelli) Puett.

His wife Michele Chavis-Puett survives of the home.

Jason worked as an oven tech at Smithfield Foods in Junction City. His co-workers appreciated his work ethic and enjoyed working with him. As a kid Jason was active in all sports and loved playing football, basketball, and baseball. Jason was extremely knowledgeable when it came to athletics, and this eventually led him to begin coaching. He coached multiple sports including football and t-ball, and especially enjoyed coaching his kids. Jason also loved to dance! In his younger years he was part of a breakdancing crew called Crash Crew. His other hobbies included playing coed softball and just spending time with his family anyway he could. There was no one who cared more for his family then he did.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Bryce Chavis and fiancé Shambrey Budd of McPherson; two daughters, Brittany McCord and husband Jordan of Riley and Amber Puett of Riley; sister, Lisa Holland-Weeks, and half-sister Andrea Puett; one grandson, Sauyer McCord of Riley and two nieces, Heather Levesque and Chrissia Neiswender and husband Colby, and great nieces and nephews'.

He was preceded in death by his Father, Mother, sister, Shelly Holland, and Half-brother, Nathan Puett.

Eunice Carolyn Pryor was born July 31, 1932, in rural Elmo, Kansas, the daughter of William and Clara (Reiff) Barten and departed this life March 4, 2022, in Abilene, Kansas. She grew up in the Elmo area, attended Morley School District 48l and graduated DCCHS with the class of 1950. Following graduation she attended Brown Mackie School of Business in Salina, Kansas.

On August 3, 1952, she was united in marriage with Wayne Pryor at the New Basel Evangelical and Reformed Church, Elmo. They lived and farmed south of Abilene until moving to town in the spring of 2001. Outside the home, Eunice worked full-time as a secretary in the law offices of Romine, Lehman and Guilfoyle. After retiring as a legal secretary, she began working part-time for Brown Memorial Foundation. 

Eunice and Wayne were blessed with five children, Douglas, Janet, Thaine, Patti and Ronald. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and caregiver, and dearly loved by her family. Survivors include her children, Doug Pryor (Charlotte) of Abilene, Kansas, Janet Chamberlin (Kenny) of Abilene, Kansas, Thaine Pryor (Kristie) of Overbrook, Kansas, Patti Zielke (Jim) of Weddington, North Carolina, and Ron Pryor (Samantha Kenner) of Abilene, Kansas; grandchildren, Suzann Pryor, Kyle Chamberlin, Alexis Michel (RJ), Brooke Hiatt (Chris), Cassie Bugner (Thomas), Jordan Nelsen (Brent), Drew Zielke, Caroline Zielke, Dallas Pryor, Kiersten Hamit (Brenden), Wyatt Pryor and Misrachael Bush; great grandchildren, Emmy Gfeller, Brayden, Blaine, Blake and Brody Michel, Caroline and Mabel Hiatt, Reagan Bugner, Elliana, Amelia and Annalise Nelsen, Bryson and Emmaline Hamit; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Lowell and June Barten, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Larry Shetter.

Throughout her years on the farm, she enjoyed spending time in her large vegetable garden, harvesting and canning or freezing the produce to provide for her family year around. She could often be found stemming beans or shelling peas while watching one of her children’s baseball or softball games. She also enjoyed playing the piano and organ, sewing, cake decorating, and playing board games with family and pinochle with friends. She loved attending her children's and grandchildren’s school activities, concerts and athletic events. Although limited, Eunice enjoyed traveling. One highlight was a trip to Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria in 2006 with her daughters and a grandson. Another was celebrating her 80th birthday in Branson, Missouri, with her family.

Eunice was a lifelong member of New Basel Church, serving in several positions on church council, as well as leading senior youth group and helping with HIS Club. Throughout her life, she loved music, singing in the church choir, and directing the adult and youth choirs. She also enjoyed singing with the Abilene Sweet Adelines for many years. She was an active member of the Dickinson County Republican Women, a Charter Member of the Republican National Committee and a Charter Member of the Eisenhower Legacy Society. Eunice truly had a servant’s heart, serving as a 4-H leader for the Newbern Wideawakes 4-H Club and volunteering with the Dickinson County Historical Society, Memorial Health System Volunteer Corps, and Dickinson County Hospice. She was a regular donor at the American Red Cross.

Visitation with family will be Friday, March 11, 2022, from 5-7 p.m. at Martin Becker Carlson Funeral Home. The memorial service will be Saturday, March 12, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at New Basel Church. Verl Eckman peacefully passed from this life February 27, 2022 at Village Manor, Abilene, Kansas. He was born to Thomas Jefferson “T.J” and Dorothy “Dot” (Frohardt) Eckman on August 4, 1931 in Abilene, Kansas. Verl was raised in rural Dickinson County and attended Talmage schools until he and his parents moved to Abilene in 1941. He graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1949. Verl was inducted into the service of the United States Army August 29, 1952 at Camp Crowder, in Missouri. He spent one year of his service with the 278th IRCT at Keflavik, Iceland. Active tour of duty ended August 30, 1954. On January 7, 1953, in Westfall, Kansas, Verl was united in marriage to Betty Carr. To this union were born four daughters and one son. Verl and Betty were blessed to spend sixty nine years together. He worked as a carpenter for Builders Incorporated in Wichita, Kansas and then was employed as a shipping clerk at Boeing Aircraft for seventeen years. When he relocated his family back to Abilene, he worked as a shipping clerk at CE Raymond/ABB Preheater, Inc. at Enterprise, Kansas for 25 years. Verl was a member of the Abilene First United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher at the early service, and was a member of the Crusaders Sunday School class. During his retirement years he and Betty enjoyed traveling - Seattle, Washington, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, just to name a few. Highlight trips: McKinney, Texas and Table Rock Lake, Missouri. Verl was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter Jeannette. Left to celebrate his life are his wife Betty, of the home; daughters: Annette (Paul) Huiett of Salina, Merrie Bruns of Buckeye, Arizona, Joyce (Doug) McKinney of Beloit; son Steve (Kathy) Eckman of Shawnee; grandchildren: Jayme (Roy) Hamilton, Phil (Kathleen) McKinney, Leann McKinney and fiancé Luke Schreefer, Mackenzie Eckman and special friend Shane Millard, Megan (Jacob) Webb; great-grandchildren: Kylie and Braedon. Verl was raised in rural Dickinson County and attended Talmage schools until he and his parents moved to Abilene in 1941. He graduated from Abilene High School with the class of 1949. She married Lucien “Bud” Feltner. He preceded her in death. She then married Frederick Benedict. He also preceded her in death. Evelyn is survived by her children Richard Cook and his wife Brenda, Deborah Farrell, Steven Cook, Tina Marfise and her husband Mike, 12 grandchildren, 32 grandchildren, and 10 great great grandchildren. Leon Jay Coup was born June 20, 1934, in Hope, Kansas the son of Jesse James and Edith Pearl (Morehouse) Coup. He attended Hope schools graduating from Hope High School in 1952. He received his bachelor’s degree from Kansas State University and a degree from the Graduate School of Banking in Wisconsin. On October 8, 1966, he was united in marriage to Karen Ingrid Schuenemann in Hope. Leon worked for Boeing Aircraft and later was the co-owner of the First National Bank and the Coup Insurance Agency in Hope and Herington. He was a lifetime active member of the Hope United Methodist Church, the Hope Lions Club for 62 years, served on the boards of the Hope Community/Education Endowment Association, Hope Community Historical Association, Dickinson County Historical Association, Herington Lutheran Home, USD 481 School Board, and Dickinson County Crime Stoppers. Leon served several terms in Hope as Mayor and as a City Council Member, served as a volunteer firefighter for 50 years, and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. He was instrumental in establishing the Hope Community Historical Museum, the Hope First National Bank Annex and Community Building, and the Hope Community Education Endowment Association. This is not a comprehensive list of all the contributions Leon made to Hope, his community. He was never one to broadcast his work, but everyone who knew him will agree he selflessly dedicated his life to his community and the people in it. Linda Lee McClung, 79, passed away on March 1, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society-Valley Vista in Wamego, Kansas. The daughter of Bob and Gladys Hooton, Linda was born on June 18, 1942, in Niles, Michigan. She spent her infant through early grade school years in the small resort village of Hudson Lake, Indiana. Her father’s work as a successful salesman for Jewel Tea Company brought the family to Illinois and finally to Missouri. Linda excelled in music and art. Following her high school graduation, Linda was hired by Hallmark Cards, Inc. She worked in the Hallmark Lithography Department in Kansas City, Missouri. It was during this time, she met her first husband, Delbert D. Taylor. They moved with their newborn son Scott to Manhattan, Kansas in 1965. Their second child Rashelle was born in 1968 in Manhattan. After a divorce, Linda met her second husband Jim McClung while square dancing. Jimmy passed away from cancer in 2005. Linda’s adult life was centered around art, writing, dancing, music, theater, travel, and enjoying her children and grandchildren. She participated in numerous social groups. She was a member of American Legion Post 17 Auxiliary and Dance Club 2000. At Riley County Senior Service Center, she helped with Meals on Wheels and led a memoir writing group for many years. She published her memoirs, From My Perspective and continued writing until her passing. She was an active member of Sedalia Community Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Gladys Hooton and her husband, Jim McClung. She is survived by her loving companion Donald L. Zehr, Sr.; her children, Scott Taylor (Lynn) of Grovetown, Georgia, and her daughter Rashelle Dillon (Joe) of Manhattan; her siblings, Russell Hooton (Sandra), William “Bill” Hooton (Shelley), Randall Hooton (Sharon) and sister Kathy Edwards. Her beloved grandchildren are Amanda Reader (Andrew) of Lafayette, Indiana, Danielle Dillon and Noah Dillon of Manhattan, and step-grandchildren, Jessica Porter (Kevin) and their children, Linda’s step-great-grandchildren: Clayton, Bradley, and Alexandria “Lexi”, and Brandon Pope (Marissa). She also leaves behind many dear friends who remember her for her laughter, steady hand, and joy of life. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
