Vera Marcene Charpie, 99 died July 12, 2022 in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; She was born on September 6, 1922 in Clay Center, the daughter of Earl and Mary (Scott) Brightweiser.&nbsp; Marcene was raised in the Clay Center community and was a was a graduate of the CCCHS Class of 1940.&nbsp; She married Warren Charpie on April 23, 1941.&nbsp; Marcene worked as a farm wife helping her husband with the crops and the animals.&nbsp; Warren preceded her in death on July 9, 2019.&nbsp; She was a member of Swedesburg First Lutheran Church, Women of the Word and Dorcus Society.&nbsp; In her free time, Marcene enjoyed quilting, painting and writing poetry.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

Timothy “Tim” Scanlan age 67 was born April 17 1955 in Chicago Illinois. Tim passed away July 11, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan after a short battle with cancer, with his wife Robin by his side. Tim was preceded in death by his father George and mother Florine Scanlan. Tim is survived by his wife Robin, his son Jason, and grandsons, JJ and Wyatt Lucas, and also his four siblings: Fran, Tom, Steve and Sue. Tim was a local member of AA, and thru AA was able to help others and passed away sober. Tim served ten years in the U.S. Army, and was stationed at Budigan, Germany, Ft Hood Texas before being stationed at Ft Riley. Tim has worked at Shilling Construction in Manhattan for 35 years. Memorial Service will be held on Friday July 22, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley with immediate family members. There will be a celebration of life that same day at the Blue Hills Room from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tim was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and will dearly be missed. William L. “Bill” McAfee, 86, of Westmoreland, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday (July 13, 2022) at the Westy Care Home in Westmoreland.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Born April 5, 1936 in New Carlisle, Ohio, Bill was the son of Henry and Velma (Dunn) McAfee.&nbsp; He married Esther I. Welty on November 22, 1957 in New Carlisle, Ohio.&nbsp; She preceded him in death on August 15, 2002.

Bill had been active with Boy Scouts.&nbsp; An avid sportsman, Bill loved hunting, bowling, watching Nascar and cheering on Jeff Gordon and in his younger days playing baseball. Bill was involved on the defensive end of a triple play.&nbsp; He was a K-State fan and enjoyed working with his hands working on and restoring old cars.&nbsp;

While living in Arizona, Bill loved hiking which brought out his passion for photography, taking many scenic photos while on his hikes and while traveling throughout the country with Esther.

Bill's other passion was flying. He earned his pilot's license before getting his driver's license.

Bill began his career with McCall Pattern Company as a machinist. He retired as Supervisor of Maintenance after 42 1/2 years with the company.

Survivors include two daughters, Diane Lindsey (Steve) of Manhattan, KS and Jane Matthews (Joe Jr.) of Tucson, AZ; two sons, Daniel McAfee (Brenda) of St. George, KS and James McAfee (J'Net) of Bellavista, AR; a daughter in law, Terry Umscheid-McAfee of Wamego, KS; three grandchildren, Joseph Matthews III (Sarah), Amber Griffin (Brian) and Elise Piotrowicz (Jesse); seven great grandchildren, Gwendolyn Matthews, Caedmon Piotrowicz, Arden Matthews, Vivian Matthews, Evan Matthews, Daniel Griffin, Tayton Griffin; a sister, Betty Cain (Chas) of Tipp City, OH; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. McAfee was preceded in death by parents; his wife, Esther; a son, David McAfee; and a daughter in law, Carla McAfee.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

William L. “Bill” McAfee

Bernard R. Mayer, 88, of Westmoreland, died July 11, 2022, at Wellsprings of Westmoreland in Kansas.

Bernard was born on the family farm southwest of Westmoreland Kansas on January 8, 1934, the son of Ed and Junia (Kanode) Mayer.&nbsp; He graduated from the Jenkin Rural Grade School and the Westmoreland Rural High School in 1951.&nbsp; After working for local contractors, he served in the U.S. Army from October 1953 to October 1955.

On November 13, 1955, he married Mary F. Rollenhagen at the Westmoreland Methodist Church.

In January 1956, he started at Kansas State and received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering on June 1959, then started his career at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Peoria, Il.

During his early years at Caterpillar, he conducted Service Training Schools for dealer personnel in Peoria, Il, Denver, Colorado, Atlanta, Georgia, and Spokane, Washington.&nbsp;&nbsp; He then spent 2 years in New Orleans, La, as the first Caterpillar Dealer Engine Field Service Representative, then returned to Morton, Il and worked at the Caterpillar General Office.

At the end of 1969 the family moved to Geneva, Switzerland where they lived for 5 years as he worked in Caterpillar’s COSA Service Engineering.&nbsp; He worked with Caterpillar dealers in most European countries, South Africa and the Middle East.&nbsp; He returned to Peoria, Il in 1975 and worked in Caterpillar Service Engineering until retiring in 1989.

He moved to Manhattan, Kansas in 1991 and back to Westmoreland, Kansas in 1997 to be close to family.&nbsp; Living in Westmoreland, he was active in the Westmoreland United Methodist Church, Westy BBQ, Pride, and a board member for the Westy Care Home, and the Rock Creek Valley Historical Museum.&nbsp; Bernard applied and was awarded a grant to have a walking trail built that runs from the Oregon Trail Park on Highway 99 and goes all the way into the town of Westmoreland, concluding at the Rock Creek Historical Society Museum.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Donald and Robert.&nbsp; Survivors include his wife Mary, daughter Renee (Jim) Heath of Westmoreland, Lori (Joe) Harroun of Bloomington, Il, 5 grandchildren, Jason (Janette) Heath, Levi Heath, Hayley Harroun, Nate Harroun, and Steven Harroun, 3 great grandchildren, Skylar Heath, Coleman Heath, and Rylee Heath.&nbsp;

While living in Morton, IL Bernard planned and oversaw the building of 3 homes.&nbsp; Once retiring to Kansas, he planned and built two more houses in Manhattan and Westmoreland, KS.&nbsp;&nbsp; His other lifelong hobby was restoring antique cars. At last count his collection included 5 cars.

A private graveside service will be held at Westmoreland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Wellsprings Care Home of Westmoreland, KS, and Accord Hospice of Manhattan, KS.

Doris Strifler, 94, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at the Wamego Health Center.

Born December 21, 1927 in Glarus, Switzerland, Doris was the daughter of Josef and Anna (Steiger) Ladstetter. She married Dannie E. Strifler on July 15, 1952 in Heidelberg, Germany. Doris moved frequently as her husband was in the military until he retired in California; Ultimately they returned to Kansas in 1993.

Doris was raised Catholic but practiced as a Methodist for much of her life. Starting as a young mother she became a fierce advocate for children and the disabled. She was an avid reader and music lover, and quite political; Doris believed in the power of the vote and that one person could make a difference. She enjoyed meeting with her closest friends at their weekly kaffeeklatsch.

Doris dearly loved her family and was happiest spending time with them.

Doris was employed by Disneyland Hotel for ten years, a job that allowed her to stretch her creativity and engage her festive spirit. She also enjoyed, and was skilled at, investing in the stock market.

Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Young of Wamego, Christel Strifler of Manhattan, and Jane Strifler of Wamego; three grandchildren, Andrew Young (Christine) of Salina, Christopher Young, and Matthew Young both of Wamego; two great-grandchildren, Luke Alexander Young and Peter Daniel Young of Salina; a sister, Christel Hannah Kusch of San Clemente, California; and many nieces and nephews both here and in Germany.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dannie on October 30, 2011; two brothers, Dr. Josef Ladsteetter and Ronald Ladstetter Sr.; and a sister, Hilda Calderwood.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Entombment will be in Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Ft. Riley.

A celebration of life for Doris will be held Sunday afternoon July 24, 2022 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.&nbsp; at the Wamego Senior and Community Center. Friends and family are invited to attend.

Doris Strifler

Edgar Root Copeland, age 86 of Riley, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.

Ed or “Root”, as he was known in his childhood days, was born on September 30, 1935, in Waterville, Kansas. Ed was the son of Charles Edgar and Ruth E. (Root) Copeland. He grew up on the family dairy farm with his three sisters. Ed graduated from Waterville High School and attended Kansas State University.

He married the love of his life, Linda Ham in Marysville on June 20, 1954. Ed and Linda were blessed with five children and enjoyed a happy and wonderful life of 68 years.

In addition to his wife, Linda Copeland, he is survived by five children, Terri Bush (Marvin) of Allen, KS, Ginger Grisson (Dave) of Austin, TX, Tammy Sharp (Tim) of Riley, Janice Norris (Kirk) of Riley, Jay Copeland (Vonda) of Riley; seven grandchildren, Megan DiNova (Tyler), Rick Bush, Becky Chase (Kody), Bill Sharp (Rebekah), Jayson Sharp, Kirstyn Norris-Alarcon (Jorge), Kyndall Neal (Derek), Betsy Copeland (Jory Harms) and Charlie Copeland; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Parker and Charlee Smith, one brother-in-law, Hosea Harkness and one sister-in-law, Sharon Wacker and many nieces and nephews.

Throughout his lifetime, Ed gave back to his community and the industry in many roles. He was the CEO of the Riley State Bank from 1987 until his death.&nbsp; He was a board member for Farmers Casualty Insurance, Marysville Mutual Insurance, The Kansas Professional Insurance Agents, and Kansas Independent Insurance Agents associations. He was a former mayor for the city of Riley, as well as a councilman. He was a member of the Shriners, Lions Club, the Riley Methodist Church and a 65-year member in the Masonic Fraternity Sutton Lodge #85. He was an avid K-State season ticket holder. He enjoyed his classic cars, antique tractors, and being up on his farm on the beautiful Blue River. Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, farming and watching K-State football and basketball. He was a regular at the coffee club each afternoon at the Short Stop where he could visit and tell stories.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Gerry Sharp officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Waterville.

Memorials have been established for the Good Shepherd Hospice House and the Waterville Fire Department.&nbsp; Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Ed and Linda were blessed with five children and enjoyed a happy and wonderful life of 68 years.In addition to his wife, Linda Copeland, he is survived by five children, Terri Bush (Marvin) of Allen, KS, Ginger Grisson (Dave) of Austin, TX, Tammy Sharp (Tim) of Riley, Janice Norris (Kirk) of Riley, Jay Copeland (Vonda) of Riley; seven grandchildren, Megan DiNova (Tyler), Rick Bush, Becky Chase (Kody), Bill Sharp (Rebekah), Jayson Sharp, Kirstyn Norris-Alarcon (Jorge), Kyndall Neal (Derek), Betsy Copeland (Jory Harms) and Charlie Copeland; eleven great grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Parker and Charlee Smith, one brother-in-law, Hosea Harkness and one sister-in-law, Sharon Wacker and many nieces and nephews.Throughout his lifetime, Ed gave back to his community and the industry in many roles. He was the CEO of the Riley State Bank from 1987 until his death.&nbsp; He was a board member for Farmers Casualty Insurance, Marysville Mutual Insurance, The Kansas Professional Insurance Agents, and Kansas Independent Insurance Agents associations. He was a former mayor for the city of Riley, as well as a councilman. He was a member of the Shriners, Lions Club, the Riley Methodist Church and a 65-year member in the Masonic Fraternity Sutton Lodge #85. He was an avid K-State season ticket holder. He enjoyed his classic cars, antique tractors, and being up on his farm on the beautiful Blue River. Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, farming and watching K-State football and basketball. He was a regular at the coffee club each afternoon at the Short Stop where he could visit and tell stories.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Gerry Sharp officiating. Lynn Arlan Bohnenblust, 58, of Leonardville, Kansas passed away peacefully on July 12, 2022, at the Leonardville Nursing Home, surrounded by his wife, children and granddaughter, ending his 27 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Born on September 6, 1963, to Arlan and Nancy (Foulke) Bohnenblust, Lynn grew up on a farm near Riley with his three siblings. During his youth he enjoyed 4-H, FFA, baseball, football, fishing, hunting and working on the family farm. Agriculture ran through his blood. A few of Lynn’s most proud accomplishments from his youth include being a member of the State 4-H Horticulture Judging team and receiving his FFA American Farmer Degree.&nbsp;

Lynn graduated from Riley County High School in 1981. He attended Cloud County Community College and Fort Hays State University, graduating with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. While at Cloud County he was a member of the Great Society and played baseball, where at the time he held the record for the most stolen bases. During his time at Fort Hays, Lynn was awarded the Champion Swine Showman at the Block &amp; Bridle Little I, was a member of the livestock judging team and very much enjoyed the buffalo statue.

On November 30, 1985, Lynn married his high school sweetheart Becki Murphy at Grace Baptist Church in Manhattan, Kansas. God blessed them with three beautiful children: Krista, Kascha and Zach.

In 1986, Lynn began his working career with Gene Williams Construction, where his claim to fame was installing all the tin on the roof of the Manhattan Town Center. In 1989, his career path shifted towards financial services, where he helped families become debt free and financially secure. In 1995, Lynn was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Over the next 13 years, he was determined to not let the disease define or defeat him.&nbsp;Once his MS started to progress rapidly, his focus shifted from serving families to making a positive impact on the younger generation. His drive for this led him to substitute teach at the Riley County and Clay County Community High Schools in the woods shop, agriculture classes and in-school suspension. Anytime he saw the chance to make a positive change in someone’s life, he grabbed the opportunity.&nbsp;

A true family man, Lynn enjoyed spending time with his children, which included coaching their many sports teams (football, baseball and softball), enjoying the outdoors (farming, fishing, gardening and hunting) as well as woodworking. Starting at a young age, Lynn was intricately involved in the Riley County 4-H organization. He wanted to make sure his children and other community youth had the same opportunities he had growing up to learn the various life skills 4-H had to offer. From club member to project superintendent, from parent to 4-H Family of the Year, he played many roles over the decades. Knowing his time was limited, he made it a priority to teach his children and others how to work hard, be humble, always have a positive attitude and never give up.

Over the last four years, Lynn was a resident at the Leonardville Nursing Home where he enjoyed visits from friends and family. He always had two rules: sign your name in his book and take a piece of candy. If he knew you had kids or grandkids at home, he’d tell you to take a piece of candy for them. His giving heart continued to shine through even in the final days of his life. When he was not watching K-State Football reruns or Walker Texas Ranger, he loved having jam sessions where he introduced others to his favorite music of Home Free, REO Speedwagon and Meatloaf.

Lynn is survived by his loving wife, Becki; daughter Krista (Branden) Moore, Clay Center; daughter Kascha (Anthony) Johnson, Chanute; and son Zach, Leonardville; grandchildren Taelyn Johnson and Cadence Brinker; his parents, Arlan and Nancy, Riley; brother Jeff (Dee) Bohnenblust, Altamont; brother Jay (Brenda) Bohnenblust, Clay Center; sister, Karla (Doug) Reisner, Hoisington; his in-laws, David and Angie Murphy, Manhattan; his brother-in-law, Dan (Diane) Murphy, Manhattan; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends who all love, cherish and adore him.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herbert and Emma Bohnenblust, and Leroy and Hazel Foulke.

Lynn touched many lives with his giving heart, strength, perseverance and orneriness. He loved Jesus and no doubt sprinted right through the pearly gates and into His loving arms.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on July 21, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on July 22, 2022 at the First Baptist Church of Clay Center. A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral service in the church fellowship hall. Lulu Mae Hollowell, age 91 of Manhattan, passed from this earth on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 11:00 in the morning.

She was born on April 26, 1931, the daughter of Maynard Eugene and Marvel Ruth (Lee) Zeller on her father’s birthday. She was born at their first home, situated below the Sedalia Church, the second of seven children.

During her young years, Lu rode a horse to a one room schoolhouse, The Sedalia School, along with her older sister Barbara and her younger brother Vernon. She also attended Silver Creek School and graduated from Keats Rural High School in 1949. During her high school years, Lu learned to read music and play the trumpet. Later in life she encouraged her son Walt to play trumpet and enjoyed listening to him perform in many bands and symphonies. Lu also had great athletic ability which she later applied to golf. On her 80th&nbsp;birthday while playing golf in San Francisco, she had a hole-in-one.

Lu always wished she had attended college. Not having that opportunity, she educated herself throughout her life, and was especially interested in American History. She was voracious reader and especially loved reading about pioneers and the setting of the American West. She was a lover of the arts and never passed up the opportunity to visit a museum or introduce one to young people. She loved listening to patriotic music, especially John Phillip Sousa.

Lu married Wayne Hollowell in 1950. They moved to Kansas City and entered the corporate world. They had two children, Walter and Gail. Wayne began his career in business with General Motors and then became an executive with Avon Products. Lu was a wonderful homemaker and supportive corporate wife, always ready to meet the challenge of the next opportunity presented to them as a couple.

In 1967, Avon offered Wayne a promotion to work at their Headquarters in New York City. The family transferred and began a new life in New Canaan, Connecticut, a commuting town to NYC. It was the life of Country clubs and glamourous parties in New York including New Years Eve at the Waldorf Astoria, and dinners at the likes of The Polo Club and The 21 Club. After their East coast years, they moved back to Kansas City and then lived in Albuquerque for many years where they enjoyed seeing Walter’s family grow… and grow.

Lu was an accomplished quilter and an accomplished cook, baker, and stitcher. In her final months, Lu was working on a quilt project that included embroidering blocks with the state flowers of all fifty states. She completed 27 states.

Lu loved Kansas and especially this community of Sedalia to which she had multi-generational ties. She spent many hours gardening at the church, helping with Vacation Bible School, and other church activities. She also loved The Silver Creek Beneficiary Club for women, to which her mother belonged before her.

She is survived by her son, Walter Hollowell and wife Ginger of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her daughter, Gail Biddle and husband Hank of Mill Valley, California; ten grandchildren, Colleen, Alysia, Eli, Megan, Jake, Drew, Kurt, Casey, Christie and Clint; eight, soon-to-be nine great grandchildren and four siblings, Barbara Brownlee, Vernon Zeller, Jack Zeller and John Zeller.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne Hollowell in 2017 and two sisters, Virginia Zeller and Corrine Snow.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2022 at the Sedalia Community Church with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Sedalia Cemetery.

Donna Lea (Forsberb/Lundberg) Finley, 67 died July 3, 2022 at Via Christi Village, Manhattan, KS. She was born on April 22, 1955 in Miami, Fl, the daughter of Richard and Hazel Lundberg. 

Donna was a homemaker and home schooled her two sons 1st grade through high school. After her sons were out of school she worked for RC Hobbies than worked 18 years as a customer service representative for Shelter Insurance and American Family Insurance where she retired early on SS1 disability. She graduated with a GED than attended Kansas State University for three years. Donna married Ralph Samuel Finley on June 26, 1976 at University Baptist Church, Manhattan, Kansas. Ralph survives of the home with their oldest son Christopher Allyn; son Joseph Edward of McPherson, KS and girlfriend and two granddaughters, Katelyn Marie and Rebecca Lea. Two sisters and one brother? Donna was preceded in death by her parents.

 Burial is to be at her cherished home in Dickinson County at a future time with a small ceremony.

Jolene Robson-Laing passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at Abilene Memorial Hospital at the age of 82 years. She was born November 8, 1939 in Abilene, the daughter of Otis and Doris Manion. Jolene was a 1957 graduate of Abilene High School. In 1961, she earned her nursing diploma from Stomont-Vail School of Nursing in Topeka, Kansas. On June 9, 1961, Jolene married fellow Abilene native, David J. Robson and the two of them moved to Pueblo, CO, where she launched her nursing career. After a couple of years, they returned to Abilene when David had opportunity to enter the family title business. Jolene spent the duration of her career at Abilene Memorial Hospital primarily as an emergency room nurse, in addition to spending several years as Director of nursing in the 1980s. She retired in 2006 after 45 years of nursing. After a brief time, Jolene once again returned to Abilene Memorial Hospital as a nurse for Memorial’s Rose Unit. Jolene’s life of service to the community was a true labor of love.

Jolene loved working in her home and garden where her creativity really shined! Blessed with the gift of hospitality, Jolene loved sharing her home with family, friends and those who just needed a place to stay. From spring until fall, flowers bloomed in abundance under her persistent care as she created a garden on par with any “Master Gardener”!

Jolene exemplified a servant’s heart whether she was helping to heal those in the ER, pouring love into her family, or creating beauty in her garden. She was in God’s restoration business, touching each life with compassion as she sought to show God’s love to all she encountered. Jolene was active in a variety of community organizations, particularly those of her faith such as Christian Women’s Club, and the Gideons International Auxiliary. Jolene attended Emmanuel Church from her childhood on, volunteering for many roles, perhaps most notably in caring for the lawn and gardens of the facility for many years.

Jolene is survived by her daughter Debra Price and husband, Chris of Manhattan, KS, together with her three children, Samantha, Jakob, and Abbegale Tech; her son Craig Robson and wife, Adrienna of Millbrae, CA, together with their two sons Ethan and Jimmy Robson; her son Guy Robson of Tulsa, OK; her daughter Jenn Martin and husband, Brent of Emporia, KS, together with their children Madilyn and Hayden Martin; and one great-grandchild, Elijah Tech the son of Samantha Tech; her brother Kent Manion and wife, June of Topeka, KS; her sister Trudy Furbeck and husband, Richard of Loveland, CO; and her brother Kirk Manion and wife, Carol of Branson West, MO; and eleven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, David Robson and Harris Laing; and her parents Otis and Doris Manion.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate her extraordinary life at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2022 at Emmanuel Church with Pastor Gordon McClure officiating. Burial will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Jolene is survived by her daughter Debra Price and husband, Chris of Manhattan, KS, together with her three children, Samantha, Jakob, and Abbegale Tech; her son Craig Robson and wife, Adrienna of Millbrae, CA, together with their two sons Ethan and Jimmy Robson; her son Guy Robson of Tulsa, OK; her daughter Jenn Martin and husband, Brent of Emporia, KS, together with their children Madilyn and Hayden Martin; and one great-grandchild, Elijah Tech the son of Samantha Tech; her brother Kent Manion and wife, June of Topeka, KS; her sister Trudy Furbeck and husband, Richard of Loveland, CO; and her brother Kirk Manion and wife, Carol of Branson West, MO; and eleven nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, David Robson and Harris Laing; and her parents Otis and Doris Manion. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her extraordinary life at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2022 at Emmanuel Church with Pastor Gordon McClure officiating. Burial will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Marian Amanda (Dietrich) Johnson, 94, earned her wings and independence and went home to our Lord on July 4, 2022. She was a two time breast cancer survivor. Cremation has taken place. Marian was born on February 28, 1928, in a house on Clark's Creek Road in rural Geary County, Kansas; the second daughter of Hugo William Ludwig Dietrich and Caroline Clara (Settgast) Dietrich. She grew up in surrounding communities of Junction City and Dwight and attended the rural schools. She talked about riding horses with her older sister, Alberta, herding cows, and doing chores. Marian was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Clark's Creek and then Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City. In 1946, while working in the sandwich shop (AAFES) on Fort Riley, Kansas, she met a young soldier who became the love of her life, Russell James Johnson. He said she made the best sandwich he had ever had. They married on February 9, 1947. Over the next few years they were stationed in New Mexico, Texas, and Germany before they decided to join civilian life and return to Junction City, Kansas. Marian continued to work with AAFES in various capacities and retired after 35 years as a Head Cashier in the Cashiers Office. She also did the bookkeeping for the various businesses she and Russell had...including the landscaping business, and rental properties. She was never one to be idle for long: a card game (quick to learn and beat you); 1,000 piece puzzles, canning tomatoes, salsa, pickles, and jellies; or helping others. She didn't just tell you how to do it, she was there to guide and show you if you needed help. Some puzzles she glued, framed and gave to others. One in particular was of crosses across America. She decided to take pictures of her two home churches and the Lutheran school with their crosses and add them to the top of the framed puzzle. She donated it to Immanuel Lutheran Church. Watching the birds from her living room window was entertaining. Beautiful red Cardinals, Blue Jays, finches, woodpeckers, and don't forget the crows. Hummingbirds were a favorite past time watching them fly to the feeders and then zoom away so quickly. Most of all, she enjoyed getting out on her zero-turn Grasshopper to mow her acreage. It was a time to get outdoors and she loved it. It was a time to just feel free and not have to think. She was still mowing just two weeks prior to her passing. Marian and Russell enjoyed many adventures, and traveled across the country, including Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, and Mexico. Sometimes for pleasure: square dancing, visiting family and friends and sometimes working: hauling boats, campers, RVs, picking up or delivering cars...it didn't matter, they were enjoying each other. They enjoyed 70 1/2 years together before Russell passed in July 2017. She missed him every day and longed for their reunion. For over thirty years, they had a fireworks stand. It grew from a small operation, to a converted school bus, to a large tent. In the early years of selling fireworks, they would make homemade ice cream for the family and close friends who came to watch fireworks shot off at the Sundown Salute at Milford Lake Dam. How fitting that she passed on the Fourth of July so she could watch from heaven with the love of her life. They raised three children together. Son, Curtis W. (Linda) Johnson, Junction City, Kansas; daughter, Cathy J. (Jay) Nuzum, Junction City, Kansas and son, Larry R. (Becki) Johnson, Manhattan, Kansas. Chae Pok Blackburn, 69, of Junction City, KS, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2022 at her home with her husband at her side. Cremation will take place. No memorial service is planned. Chae was born April 15, 1953 in Chungwon-Kun, Chungpuk-Do, Korea the daughter of Kum Chon and Chae Pong (Yun) Chong. Chae worked many years at Ft. Lorna M. Craft, age 83, of Blue Rapids, passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2022, at Blue Valley Senior Living in Blue Rapids.

Lorna was born on September, 19, 1938, on her family’s farm near Wheaton.&nbsp; She is the daughter of LeRoy F. and Minnie E. (Holder) Kenworthy.&nbsp; She graduated from Frankfort High School in 1956.&nbsp; On September 20, 1959, she married Harold E. Craft at the Methodist Church in Frankfort.&nbsp; He passed away in 2010.

Lorna had worked as a bus driver for the Valley Heights school district for over forty years.&nbsp; In addition to driving the bus, she also worked as a cook at the school and later as the Activities Director at Blue Valley Senior Living.

Lorna’s life revolved around two things, her family and Valley Heights.&nbsp; In addition to driving a school bus, she was a proud supporter of the kids whether it was sports, band or field trips.&nbsp; She also loved her sports, especially Valley Heights, K-State and the Kansas City Royals.

Survivors include her two children: Jenni (Pierce) Holliman of Waterville, Janet (Robert Clark) Fencil of Olathe, a brother Bob (Jane) Kenworthy of Frankfort, three grandchildren: Laney, Teri Jo and Robert and by seven great-grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Preceding Lorna in death were her parents, husband, Harold, a grandson Andrew Fencil, son-in-law Brad Worthington and six siblings: Norma Burton, Julius Kenworthy, Ralph Kenworthy, Art Kenworthy, Junior Kenworthy and Howard Kenworthy.

Mary Sue (Spittles) Hottman was born November 17, 1943 in Junction City, Kansas the daughter of Fred and Pearl (Freeman) Spittles. Mary Sue graduated from St. Xavier High School in Junction City. She married Bobby Leister on December 2, 1961 and had four children, later divorcing. She then married Frankie Dean Hottman on November 9th, 1974. Together they had 2 sons. Mary Sue was a homemaker and also cooked at several restaurants including the Whitehouse Motel, Round Up Café, and was a head cook at the Kirby House Restaurant. She is survived by her loving husband Frankie of the home, other survivors include her children Scott Bradley Leister and his wife Sherry of Abilene, Dirk Edward Leister and his wife Alana of Wichita, Wendy Kay Surritte and her husband David of Abilene, Demas Matthew Hottman of Wichita, Damon Michael Hottman and his wife Jill of Kansas City, Kansas, stepdaughter Kimberly Hottman Ayers of Salina, mother in law Esther Hottman of Enterprise, eleven grandchildren, five step grandchildren, two great grandchildren and eleven step great grandchildren. Sherry was united in marriage to Stuart Novotny on August 6, 1971 in Abilene. Sherry was always there for her family no matter what. She loved them all fiercely, and would do anything for them; especially her grandbabies. She had the most contagious laugh and knew how to make anyone smile. Sherry loved watching basketball and football. One of her favorite things to do was spend time with her grandbabies, along with watching her great granddaughter dance. She passed away on July 4, 2022 at her home near Solomon. Sherry Jo Novotny - May 30th, 1952 - July 4th, 2022

Eddie S. Allen, age 70, of Riley, passed away July 3, 2022 at Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan. Born October 18, 1951 in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Edward S. and Thelma Allen. Growing up, Eddie attended schools in Manhattan, Zeandale, Wamego and Riley. He attended Riley County High School and was a lifetime resident of Riley County. In 1970 Eddie married Dori Alstatt and they had a son, Todd. They were divorced. Eddie met his life partner, Wanda Haynie, in 1972. She survives. Eddie and Wanda were married 21 years but were together for 50. They spent 31 years living their dream in the country with plenty of room for old cars, motorcycles, Labrador retrievers, cats, two goats, a horse and wildlife, some welcome and some not so much. Eddie was proud to serve from 1970-1976 in the Kansas Army National Guard 69th Engineering Headquarters Company. Eddie loved having his son and grandsons close by. Gathering for family celebrations gave him much joy and being able to attend their sports and school activities. When Todd was growing up, Eddie knew when he needed to be “Dad” but he knew how to have fun, too, as you will learn from Todd’s stories. As adults, they were the best of friends. Eddie’s passion was old cars from a very early age. Buying projects, restoring and sometimes selling them to buy the next project. He often had two or three projects going at one time. He would look at a vehicle in a field or junkyard and could envision the potential of a finished car. His favorite was the 1955 Chevy 210 but he thoroughly enjoyed cars he owned from the 1930s to the muscle cars of the 1960s and 70s. He was a Chevy man but appreciated anyone who was a car enthusiast, even if it was a Ford! You can’t seem to love old cars and not feel the same way about motorcycles. Eddie had several Honda Gold Wings from the mid 1970s through the 1990s. His ultimate dream was owning a Harley. In 2003, he bought a 2003 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Anniversary edition. He customized it to his taste and rode more than 70,000 miles, including a couple trips to Sturgis. Eddie drove the 1937 Coupe west to California on Route 66, and east to Louisville, Kentucky. Over the years, many of his other cars were driven as far north as Minnesota and south to Texas going to car shows. He also drove up Pike’s Peak a few times with his Honda Gold Wings and the 1956 4-door sedan. Eddie was a member of Flint Hills Harley Owners Group for several years, serving one year as Safety Officer. He was a member of National Street Rod Association. Eddie performed safety inspections for other members’ street rods for several years. Vacations were usually spent traveling every year to various area, regional and national car shows. Drag racing was another one of Eddie’s favorite pastimes. He had a blast participating in and being a spectator, supporting his friends at race tracks in Manhattan and surrounding areas. A huge Nascar and original Dale Earnhardt fan, mostly on TV. He was able to attend races in Texas and Kansas. Eddie was employed many places in his life, starting with working and harvesting at area farms in the summers during high school. Followed by Bird Music Vending Company, Jerry’s 66, the City of Manhattan street department, Westloop Auto Parts, Mike’s Wrecker and Elkins car dealership. Eddie spent 31 years in the GM parts department at Briggs Motor Company. He retired March 2018. After deciding retirement wasn’t for him, he returned to Briggs in November 2018 as a parts delivery driver. He drove from Manhattan to Topeka to Lawrence twice a day. He loved the driving but retired again in February 2021 when his health became a priority. The number of neighborhoods, schools and workplaces in his life allowed him to meet and make many longtime friendships. Eddie had a kind and generous heart, preferring to be the giver rather than the receiver. Hanging out with his friends at car shows, in his shop, or the 3rd Street car wash in his younger days, was a big deal and had been for most of his life. There was always a lot of swapping stories, sharing advice, helping work on the cars, and lots of laughter. Due to his health, the last car show he was able to attend was Randolph’s Fourth of July 2021. He was determined to get his latest project running, a 1955 Chevy 210, to take to this year’s celebration. When Eddie, physically, was unable to continue working on his car, his nephew, Jeff, and many of Eddie’s friends (under Eddie’s supervision, of course), stepped up and worked hard over the last few months to make it happen. All that was left for him to do was turn the key. Eddie would want all of his friends and family to celebrate his life, share their stories and the love he had for all of us, and us for him. Eddie considered everyone in his life his family. Eddie S. Allen, age 70, of Riley, passed away July 3, 2022 at Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan. Born October 18, 1951 in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of Edward S. and Thelma Allen. Growing up, Eddie attended schools in Manhattan, Zeandale, Wamego and Riley. He attended Riley County High School and was a lifetime resident of Riley County. In 1970 Eddie married Dori Alstatt and they had a son, Todd. They were divorced. Eddie met his life partner, Wanda Haynie, in 1972. She survives. Eddie and Wanda were married 21 years but were together for 50. They spent 31 years living their dream in the country with plenty of room for old cars, motorcycles, Labrador retrievers, cats, two goats, a horse and wildlife, some welcome and some not so much. Marion Wagner passed away peacefully on July 5, 2022, in the Sunflower Memory Center at the Colmery-O’Neil Veterans Medical Center, Topeka, Kansas. Marion Eugene Wagner was born July 31, 1934, near Vienna in Maries County, Missouri, to Dora Ethel Honse and Alfred Casper Wagner. He grew up in Missouri and Illinois and after attending Perry, Illinois High School he entered the United States Army in 1953. He served at Fort Riley, Kansas, and Aschaffeburg Installation, Frankfurt, Germany until his honorable discharge in 1956 at which time he was a member of the United States Army Reserve until 1961. While stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas he met and married Donna Jean Wagor in 1955 and they had four daughters, Sheryl, Sondra, Teresa, and Laura. Marion married Marilyn Yeoman in Nebraska in 1969 and they had two sons, Mark and Stephen. As a young man, he enjoyed fishing, roller skating, and swing dancing. In the world of employment in Kansas, Nebraska, and Arizona he was flexible and diversified and held jobs as a heavy equipment operator in the construction field, automobile salesman favoring the Ford brand, manufactured housing sales, real estate developer, modular home manufacturing factory owner, over the road truck driver certified for both tanker and tractor rigs (Central Transportation Co., Norfolk, NE) and real estate salesman. After retiring he drove a bus for Flint Hills ATA and lived in Manhattan, Kansas until May of 2021 when he moved to Topeka, Kansas. Marion was a member of the NE Nebraska Shrine Club, the BPOE, and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 16 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Marion was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother Elgin, brother Wade, twin sister Mary Ethel McClintock, son-in-law, Thomas Cuddy, granddaughter Kacie Rae Skidmore, and grandson Allan Bechtel. He is survived by his children Sheryl (Larry Johnson), Prescott Valley, Arizona; Sondra Cuddy, Gilbert, Arizona; Teresa (Tom Bechtel), Ponca City, Oklahoma; Laura Skidmore, Manhattan, Kansas; Mark Wagner, Columbus, Nebraska; Stephen (Angela) Wagner, Randolph, Nebraska, AND seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren Thomas John (TJ) Cuddy, Laela and Emma; Whitney Cuddy and fiancé Philip Pokorny, Eleanor, Lake and Nash; Charles Colton Skidmore; Erin Bechtel White (Nick); Hanna Wagner; Rachel Wagner; Elizabeth Wagner. Terri Sue Conatser, 62, of St. George, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday (July 6, 2022) at her home in St. George.

Born October 28, 1959 in Franklin, Kansas, Terri was the daughter of Walter and Betty Maureen (Beasley) Ochs.&nbsp; Terri had been married to Charlie Barker.&nbsp; She married David Conatser on January 1, 2011 in Garden City, Kansas.&nbsp; He survives.

Terri was a member of Immanuel Faith Community Church Wells Creek.&nbsp; She was an accomplished quilter and enjoyed watching wrestling on TV.&nbsp; Terri's greatest joy came in the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Terri was employed as a secretary at Lee Construction Co. in Garden City, Kansas. She previously worked with the American Red Cross and SRS in Garden City.&nbsp; She and David moved to St. George in May, 2020.

Survivors include her husband, David; two daughters, Victoria Niedfeldt (Tyrel) of Wamego, KS and Elizabeth Wills of St. George, KS; six grandchildren, Nautami Niedfeldt, Zyrain Frizzell, Brayen Niedfeldt, Brandon Jr. Wills, Braxton Wills and William Mitchell; a brother, Doug Ochs (Francee) of Minneapolis, KS; and one niece and one nephew.

Terri was preceded in death by her parents.

He was born on December 21, 1945 in Westmoreland, the son of Elvin Leroy and Barbara LaVerna (Linder) Carlson.

Marlin "Pete" “Bill” Verlyn Peterson, 80 of Clay Center, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at the Clay County Medical Center surrounded by family.&nbsp; He was born on July 27, 1941, the son of Pete and Edith (Graves) Peterson in Clay Center.&nbsp;

Pete Grew up in the Clifton area and attended the Pleasant Peak School.&nbsp; He graduated from Clifton High School in 1959.&nbsp; He joined the U.S. Army and served for 3 years and was a proud veteran.&nbsp; Pete was a loyal and dedicated employee at Hutchinson/Mayrath for over 42 years as the shipping clerk.

He married Brenda Trahan at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Miltonvale, Kansas on September 16, 1972.&nbsp; To this union a daughter was born, Tamara Kay.&nbsp; They made their home in or near Clay Center fro almost 50 years.

Pete had a prestigious collection of Native American artifacts, all were personal finds in Clay and Washington Counties.&nbsp; He won several awards from the Kansas Archeological Society over the years for his personal find collections.

Pete was also a devoted and serious KU basketball fan and even got to meet with Coach Bill Self.

He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Delmer, LaVerne and Glemo and a sister, Marcine Johnson.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Peterson; daughter, Tamara Wallace; granddaughters, Jaycee Aikman, Addie Wallace and Molly Wallace; great grandson, Hunter Lee Aikman and many nieces and nephews

Diana F. Russell, 61 of Topeka, died Monday, July 4, 2022 at the Stormont Vail Hospital.&nbsp; She was born on October 26, 1960 in Concordia, Kansas, the daughter of Leo and Roberta (Weir) Horner.

Diana grew up in Wakefield, graduating from Wakefield High School in 1978.&nbsp; She married Todd Russell on June 1, 1986.&nbsp; Diana worked at the Foot Locker Warehouse in Junction City for over 25 years before moving to Topeka in 2014.&nbsp; She is preceded in death by her father.

Diana F. Richard J. Wright, Jr., 76 of Miltonvale, died Thursday, June 30, 2022 at his residence.&nbsp; He was born on July 22, 1945 in Lynch, Nebraska the son of Richard, Sr. and Evelyn (Kelly) Wright.

Richard grew up in Lynch and O’Neill, Nebraska and worked with his family on ranches in Nebraska and South Dakota.&nbsp; He served in the U.S. Navy from 1962-1966.&nbsp; After his service, Richard worked as a self employed truck driver for over 40 years.&nbsp; He was a past commander of the Miltonvale American Legion and was a member of the V.F.W.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Karen Papke.

Catherine Irene Reed Patton went to her heavenly home on July 5, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Catherine was born to Victor and Bessie (Hindman) Reed on July, 19, 1927 and she was one of six siblings. On August 2, 1947 Catherine was united in marriage to John E. Patton at the Methodist Church of Salina, KS. He preceded her in death on February 20, 2007.

Catherine graduated from Solomon High School in 1945 and also attended Brown Mackie. She worked for the Reflector Chronicle for many years. She volunteered at the Historical Society, was a member of Eastern Star and First Baptist Church. Catherine loved to cook, read and spend time with family and friends. She loved to dance and sing along to her favorite hymns, country western songs and Elvis.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Victor Reed and Robert Reed, and her sister Velma Erker. She is survived by daughters, Vicki (Bob) Wright of Abilene, KS, and Joyce (Ron) Montgomery of Rockdale, TX; one brother, Ed Reed of Melbourne, FL and one sister, Velda Isaacson of Salina, KS; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Thursday night, July 7th at Martin Becker Carlson Funeral Home from 5:00-7:00. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 8th at First Baptist Church, Abilene at 10 a.m.

Memorials can be made to First Baptist Church, Abilene, Hospice of Dickinson County and Garten’s Countryside.&nbsp;&nbsp;
