&nbsp;James Norson Akin, 87, formerly of Manhattan, Kansas and most recently of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 19th, 2022 at Vintage Park Assisted Living Facility.&nbsp;

Jim was born in Vermillion, Kansas on January 2, 1935 the son of Norson Harvey and Cora Bell (McAtee) Akin.&nbsp; He attended Vermillion High school and graduated in 1953.&nbsp; After graduation, Jim attended Baker University in Baldwin City.

Jim joined the U.S. Air Force and served four years as a weather observer until he was honorably discharged in 1957.&nbsp;&nbsp; He met Jean Heying of Clovis, New Mexico while stationed in Clovis and he and Jean married on May 19th, 1957.&nbsp; Jim and Jean divorced in 1974. Through this marriage, they raised 2 children, Janet Ebert (Todd) of Wamego and Kenneth Akin (deceased).

Jim attended Kansas State University earning a bachelor’s degree (education) in 1960 as well as a master’s degree in education from KSU.&nbsp; He got his first job at Wamego, Kansas teaching history and biology as well as being the first Freshman Football coach.&nbsp; Then after 2 years, the family moved to Paola, Kansas for 4 years where Jim also taught and coached.&nbsp; He accepted a position as a principal but before the new year started, Jim was offered the job of his lifetime, becoming the Director of the Teacher Placement Center at Kansas State University.&nbsp; In this position, Jim made many friends across the state of Kansas helping students, principals, and superintendents match teachers to job openings in their communities.&nbsp; Following the retirement of the director of Career Services, Jim was offered the job as director of the Career Placement Services at Kansas State University.&nbsp; Jim bled purple and enjoyed attending Kansas State activities and sports!&nbsp; Many friendships were developed over his 33 years of service until Jim’s retirement.

As a member of the Manhattan community, Jim enjoyed serving on the City Commission (1971- 1975) and at the time received the most votes for that office to date.&nbsp; He also served as the Mayor of Manhattan&nbsp; from 1973-74.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Norson and Cora Akin; a sister, Margie Yeager; a brother, William Akin; a sister; Joyce Clark; and a son; Kenneth Akin.

He is survived by his daughter; Janet Ebert (Todd) and grandchildren Brent Zafran, Shelby Ebert, and Nicholas Akin. Jim is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Friday (April 1, 2022) at 1:30 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Wamego followed by internment at Wamego City Cemetery.&nbsp; There will be a visititation (cookie reception) to allow for friends and family to visit at the church following the graveside service.

Farrel Gene Chartier, age 85 of Miltonvale, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center.

He was born on February 12, 1937 south of Clyde, the son of Zephern and Dorothy (Cyr) Chartier.

He worked for Farmers Union Co-op &nbsp;grain elevators in Miltonvale &amp; Clay Center for 39 years.&nbsp; He was a longtime member of the Miltonvale Volunteer Fire Department, Miltonvale Young Farmers, Miltonvale Christian Church.&nbsp; Farrel officially started the Miltonvale Celebration "Tootlefest" Turtle races and children's games.&nbsp; He worked on the “chain gang” at Miltonvale High School football games and was known for his big voice "Good Day" farewell, quick wit, laugh and smile.&nbsp; He was an avid horseman, member of the Miltonvale Saddle Club and hobby farmer: raising pigs, horses and dairy and beef cows.

He is survived by two daughters, Deb Beaver (Brian) of Hoisington and Denette Westerman (Dirk) of Wakefield; one son, Doug Chartier of Wichita; the mother of his children, Marlene Chartier of Clay Center; his twin brother, Darrel Chartier (Ruth) of Deer Creek, Oklahoma; his sister, Carol Ricketts (Rick) of Clay Center; eight grandchildren, Matthew Beaver (Ashley), Melissa Johnson (Kris), Heather Beaver, Jerrod Beaver (Bekki), Kyle Westerman (Gina), Kaleb Westerman (Lindsey) Keenan Westerman and Kirby Westerman; eleven great grandchildren, Landon Beaver, Lola Beaver, Teagan Beaver, Kylen Johnson, Kinsley Johnson, Braylon Beaver, Kieron Beaver, Dexter Westerman, Zephern Westerman, Grace Westerman and McCoy Westerman and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elaine Claeys; one niece, Cheri Chartier and one nephew, David Chartier.

John Damian Linenberger, 86, of Manhattan, passed away Tuesday, February 22nd. He was a house painter in the Manhattan area. John was born in Victoria, KS on October 29, 1935, the son of the late Bonaventure Linenberger and Gertrude (Beck) Linenberger. John was married to Marlene Ann Brungardt in Victoria on Dec 28, 1964, and she also survives of the home. John attended the St. Francis Catholic High School and Seminary in Victoria, he also served in the U.S. Army. John and Marlene attended the St. Isidore Catholic Church in Manhattan. Survivors are his wife, Marlene, of their home; his son, Shaun and Melissa Linenberger, of Manhattan, three grandchildren, Shane, Logan, and AJ. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Edwin, Gilbert, Dennis, Verlin, Thomas, Leo, and Patrick Linenberger; four sisters, Henrietta Giebler, Doris Younger-Pfeifer, Virginia Linenberger, and Bonita M. (Linenberger) Schultz; and one infant brother, Clarence Linenberger. Visitation will be prior to the vigil service and rosary from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. John Damian Linenberger

Don Blakeslee was born on May 3, 1928, in Atchison, KS, to George and
 Clarra Blakeslee.&nbsp; He passed away on February 21, 2022, in Hutchinson, 
KS.&nbsp;

Don married Marjorie Garten of Newton, KS, on August 19, 1950, on the
 campus of their Alma Mater KU.&nbsp; He has two children, Julia Drake and 
husband Steve, of Gaithersburg, MD, and Mark Blakeslee and wife Denise, 
of Nickerson, KS.&nbsp; Don has six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emmalee, Pete, 
Corrine, Whitney, and Cassie Elizabeth, and ten great-grandchildren.

He received a B.S. from KU in 1949 and EdD 1969 from the University 
of Wyoming.&nbsp; Don was inducted into the US Army and served as a Battery 
Commander, as a first lieutenant in Korea where he earned a Bronze 
Star.&nbsp; He referred to his military experiences frequently.&nbsp;

Marjorie, his wife and he, moved to Wyoming in 1953.&nbsp; They returned 
to Kansas in 2007.&nbsp; Dr. B worked as a classroom teacher, guidance 
counselor, interim superintendent, Director of Curriculum, and School 
Board member in Rawlins, WY, Carbon County School District number one 
over a fifty plus year career.&nbsp; A distinguished career in education 
locally and nationally with WEA/NEA was had by him.&nbsp; Serving as local 
president and state president of WEA.&nbsp; Director of WEA from 1967-1976 
representing Wyoming at the NEA was an additional honor of his.&nbsp; He was 
also a member of the Wyoming State Board of Education from 1975-1981.&nbsp; 
Dr. B was also a trainer and member of AARP 1989-1997.&nbsp; Don was involved
 with his local church in Wyoming as an ordained elder.&nbsp; As chairman of 
the NEA International Relations Committee, he traveled to London, 
Nairobi, Kenya, Berlin, Morges, Switzerland, and Paris.&nbsp; Dr. B traveled 
to provide evaluations for schools as a part of the North Central 
Association 1984-1989.&nbsp; Dr. B was proudly the Rawlins High School 
Student Council Sponsor from 1957-1989.&nbsp; &nbsp;He received awards from 
Wyoming Personnel and Guidance Association for Outstanding Contribution 
1968, Gold Key for Outstanding Service to Education, WEA 1971, Honorary 
Life Membership to PTA, Meritorious Service Award North Central 
Association 1986, Outstanding Contribution to Education Wyoming School 
Boards Association 1989,&nbsp; North Central Association Excellence in 
Education 1988, Centennial Honored Graduate Atchison County Community 
High School (one of 100 top graduates from previous 100 years), and 
School Bell award for Outstanding Service to Education Wyoming School 
Boards Association 2000.&nbsp;

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Meg, granddaughter, Cassie Elizabeth, and great-grandson, Christopher Michael.&nbsp;

Celebration of Life service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2022, 
at Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp; Military honors will be conducted by the Fort 
Riley Honor Guard.&nbsp; Family will greet friends following the service at 
Elliott Mortuary.&nbsp; Friends may sign the book from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. 
Sunday, February 27, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, February 28, and

Felicita Lara, 71, of Manhattan, passed away Sunday, February 20th, at her home in Manhattan. She was a retired delivery person for Dillons, but her true love was being a homemaker for her family. Felicita was born in El Paso, Texas on April 12, 1950, the daughter of the late Maria Percidia and Jose De La Rosa. She was married to the late Orlando Lara on May 8, 1971, in Roswell, NM. She attended Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan for many years. Felicita is survived by her daughter, Anna Lara of Manhattan; three sons Michael Orlando Lara, of Havensville, KS; Patrick Eric Lara, of Manhattan; Jose Maria Lara also of Manhattan and, 3 brothers, Zekiel De La Rosa, Jose M. De La Rosa, Joe De La Rosa) and 6 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Orlando Lars; parents; and brothers Nick and Rudy De La Rosa. An inurnment service will be held at the Ft. John Romanus Hieger, 80, of Wamego, passed away on Sunday (February 20, 2022) on his farm in Wamego.

Born January 14, 1942 in Wamego, John was the son of Romanus John and Inez Catherine (Heptig) Hieger.&nbsp; He married Marla Jean Wheeler on May 29, 1970 in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego.&nbsp; She survives.

Mr. Hieger served his country in the U. S. Army.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church where he served on the Parish Council for many years.&nbsp; He was a life member of the Rock Creek FFA Alumni and a member of the Farmers Home Administration where he was a past board member.

John’s passion was working his farm with his family. His love of farming included calving in the spring, raising replacement Holstein heifers, and he especially enjoyed the tilling of the soil preparing the field for spring planting. In addition to the farm work, John also enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching wildlife on the farm when he had extra time.

&nbsp;Survivors include his wife, Marla; two sons, Anthony Hieger (Melissa) of St. George, KS and Jim Hieger (Karla Eigenman) of St. George, KS; a daughter, Marla Hieger of Wamego, KS; a grandson, Levi Hieger-Eigenman; a brother, George Hieger; and two sisters, Marie Hieger and Rose Hieger.

&nbsp;Mr. Hieger was prececed in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.,&nbsp; Tuesday March 1, 2022 at&nbsp; St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with Father Mike Peterson officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.

John Romanus Hieger

Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Leland Laverne Robinson&nbsp;passed away Feb 7th 2022 at the Brookdale East Memory Care Facility in Wichita, one week short of his 90th&nbsp;birthday. He was a resident of Junction City for over 45 years. 

Leland was born in War, West Virginia, on 14 Feb 1932, the son of Omer and Gladys Robinson. He joined the Army in 1951. He was a combat veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. In addition to Fort Riley, other assigned locations during his 21-year service career included Fort Benning, Panama, Germany, ROTC at Northern Illinois University, and Section Command of the Manhattan KS Army Reserve Unit.&nbsp;

In 1968, Leland was promoted to the rank of Command Sergeant Major (E9) while serving in Vietnam. At age 36, he was the youngest soldier at that time to be promoted to the CSM rank. When he retired in 1972, his service medals included two Combat Infantry Badges (Korea and RVN), Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Silver Star.&nbsp;After retirement from active duty, his civilian career was in finance – primarily Civil Service in the Payroll unit at Fort Riley. 

During his civilian years, CSM (ret.) Robinson was very active in community affairs, both local and national. He served terms as president of both the Junction City Kiwanis Club and the Sertoma Club. He served on the Junction City Crime Stoppers board. He was elected National President of the organization now known as the Armed Forces E9 Association, and hosted two national meetings in Junction City. Until his health declined, Leland regularly delivered Meals on Wheels in Junction City.&nbsp;

Leland married Beverly J. Beberness at the Post Chapel of Fort Benning, GA, in 1953. She was enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps at the time. They were married 59 years, until her passing in 2012. Leland is also predeceased by his parents Omer and Gladys Robinson, brother Franklin, and son Michael.&nbsp;Leland is survived by children Kathy (Harold) Roesler of Rose Hill KS, Steven (Roberta) Robinson of Olathe KS, Karen (David) Rogers of Fredonia KS, Scott (Paige) Robinson of Lawrence KS, and Randy (Marina) Robinson of Edmond OK. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and by special friend Grace Jones.&nbsp;

Cremation has taken place. Inurnment next to his wife will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Junction City. The date and time of the gravesite service will be announced later. Mike was born September 20, 1953 in Sulphur, OK, to William Gene Mayo and Joyce Corene Robb. Mike received a Bachelor of Architecture, Cum Laude, from Kansas State University in 1977 and a Master of Business Administration from K-State in 1979. After working in Salina as an architect for two years, Mike returned to K-State to teach in the College of Engineering. After teaching part time and practicing architecture part time with The Ken Ebert Design Group, Mike joined Ken Ebert full time in 1992. In 2005 Mike became a full partner and the firm was renamed The Ebert Mayo Design Group, Architects &amp; Planning Consultants. From 2011–2016, Mike served as Lead Architect of the College of Business Building on the K-State Campus bringing full circle his educational and professional careers. In 2005 Mike was married to Carolyn Rutherford (nee Hamilton). As a young man, Mike earned the honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. He was a member of the Manhattan Rotary and a man of many interests; a licensed private pilot, large-kite enthusiast, avid cyclist and paintball player, as well as amateur astronomer and scenic designer for the stage. Mike was predeceased by his mother, Joyce Corene Mayo and brother Phillip Thomas Mayo. Joseph was born July 7, 1951, in Schenectady, NY, the son of John Joseph and Georgiana (Elber) Latimer, Sr. Joe served in the United States Army until his retirement. Dorothy Jean Marks-Nichols-Bragg, the beloved daughter of the late Pearlie M. Owens and the late Daniel (Dan) Marks was born in Pickens, AR on June 16, 1943. Dorothy grew up in a beautiful farm community, Pickens, AR, where all adults loved and cared for one another. They were your other parents and had permission to discipline you as such. Jean (known by her middle name), her sisters: Helene Marks-George and Deborah R. Adams, brother, Ronnie Ray Adams (deceased) and cousins: Leola Packard-Lambert, Edna M. Owens-Huskey, Nathaniel Owens, Andrew Barber and Carrie B. Owens (all deceased) had many memorable, awesome, and adventurous times. To appreciate Dorothy’s experiences, one must love nature and the outdoors. As a young child, Dorothy walked in her grandfather’s footsteps trying to do all the outdoor things he did. By the age of eight, Dorothy was a sharpshooter with the rifle, knew how to hunt, and went on hunting trips with the family, and fishing on her own. Dorothy learned how to garden, graft and prune trees, help build bridges and duck ponds, set rabbit traps, saw wood, cook, can food, and sew. Later in life, Dorothy learned to repair small electric appliances. She also learned how to ride a horse. Dorothy was a born-again Christian, accepting Jesus Christ into her life at age 12 in August 1955, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Pickens, AR under the pastorage of late Reverend Morgan Johnson. Dorothy was baptized in a joint baptism at Rhower, AR in a clear running stream. Her first responsibility after accepting Jesus as her Lord and Savior was to become the president of the Youth Department which she held until graduation from high school where was an honor student. As a student, Dorothy participated in Omega Elementary's Spelling Bee which she won every year and the Desha County Spelling Bee winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place separately for 8 years. Dorothy was a member of the 4-H Club, Home Makers Club of Desha County, AR, Future Farmers of America and Future Teachers of America. She was 1st runner-up in the Miss Future Teachers of America at A.L Reed High School, Dumas, AR in 1960, ran track, played girls' basketball, and belonged the Drama Club. Dorothy's graduating class of 1961 was the first class in Dumas to participate in a sit-in protesting discrimination in the school system. She was an activist in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1959-1966) and collaborated with the Young Democrats distributing and explaining literature on voting. Dorothy united in holy matrimony to the late Raymond A. Nichols, Sr., on December 25, 1960, at the home of her mother in Pickens, AR. Dorothy and Raymond were blessed with 6 children of which four children survive. Raymond passed September 16, 1977. Dorothy met the late Elijah Bragg in summer of 1979. They began dating in the fall of 1979 and were married on December 4, 1980. They were blessed with 2 children, one survives. When Dorothy married Elijah, she gained another daughter, Kimberly P. Bragg Madkins now deceased. Elijah passed October 7, 2012. Dorothy loved the Lord and was determined to do God’s will as the Holy Spirit led her. Dorothy Bragg loved working with children. Over the years, she loved and encouraged many. Dorothy became surrogate mother to many. In her labor for the Lord, Dorothy served in many capacities. In the local church: Financial Secretary 1978-1998, VBS Director 1979 to 1981, Board of Christian Education, Youth Director 1981 to 1987, Ministers and Missionary Chairperson (ABC). She helped reorganize and worked in the Nursery, was a former Young Matron and a member of the Souls Aglow, was secretary of the Study Mission Circle, 1st Vice President and Acting President twice for Beacon Light Union Missionary Department, School of Mission Instructor and Adult and Sunbeam Workshop Presenter for the Beacon Light Union Missionary Department, member of the Young Adult and Women’s Sunday School classes, Assistant Church School Teacher to the Jr. High class and Teacher of the V.B.S. Kindergarten class for many years, served on a Pulpit Search Committee, served as Co-Chairman and Chairman of the History Committee, the UPLIFTER Staff and retired in 2017 from SMBC as Church/Pastor Secretary. In the District: Smoky Hill District Association’s District Youth Director (7 Years), District Sunbeam Director (5 Years), Workshop Instructor/facilitator Sunbeam Department, District Registrar (17 Years), District Financial Secretary (1 year) Budget and Finance Committee, District Scholarship Chairperson (36 years) and District Young Matron’s Advisor. In the State: Missionary Baptist State Convention of Kansas’ Missionary Department’s School of Mission Assistant's Chairperson and Sunbeam Department’s Education Director (1996-1999), Assistant Director and finally 4th Vice President-State Sunbeam Director from 1999 to 2013, was a member on the Board of the Missionary Baptist State Convention of Kansas. Recognized as one of one hundred ladies who made a difference in mission, inducted into the Hall of Fame 1996. Her community involvement included member of the Junction City Branch of the NAACP becoming a Life Member in 1989, serving as Financial Secretary for several years beginning in 1996; Freedom Fund Banquet Chairperson, finally the Treasurer which Dorothy held until her passing. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Day Celebration, member of the Geary County Democratic Women Club, Treasurer of Westwood PTA for several years, volunteer at nursing home on 14th Street and later Valley View in the 70’s and 80’s, and the Geary County Senior Citizens Committee member. Dorothy echoed, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine…” and that she did…let her light shine for Jesus, in her daily walk wherever she went. Sister Dorothy was a dedicated and courageous Christian woman who was committed to the cause of Christ. Dorothy was not concerned about what people thought about her; rather she was concerned with what the Lord required of her. Dorothy was more concerned with gaining knowledge and learning new skills. She carried the light of Jesus in her life, for Dorothy absolutely loved the Lord. She was a generous, loving person compelled to run on to see what the end will be. Dorothy worked and waited to hear the Lord say, “Well, done, Dorothy. Come on up and receive your reward.” And our mom, Dorothy, is going to shout, “Hallelujah, Hallelujah, I made it over!” Forever cherishing memories of Dorothy are five children: Tina M. Dorothy Jean Marks-Nichols-Bragg, the beloved daughter of the late Pearlie M. Owens and the late Daniel (Dan) Marks was born in Pickens, AR on June 16, 1943. Dorothy grew up in a beautiful farm community, Pickens, AR, where all adults loved and cared for one another. They were your other parents and had permission to discipline you as such. Jean (known by her middle name), her sisters: Helene Marks-George and Deborah R. Adams, brother, Ronnie Ray Adams (deceased) and cousins: Leola Packard-Lambert, Edna M. Owens-Huskey, Nathaniel Owens, Andrew Barber and Carrie B. Owens (all deceased) had many memorable, awesome, and adventurous times. To appreciate Dorothy’s experiences, one must love nature and the outdoors. As a young child, Dorothy walked in her grandfather’s footsteps trying to do all the outdoor things he did. By the age of eight, Dorothy was a sharpshooter with the rifle, knew how to hunt, and went on hunting trips with the family, and fishing on her own. Dorothy learned how to garden, graft and prune trees, help build bridges and duck ponds, set rabbit traps, saw wood, cook, can food, and sew. Later in life, Dorothy learned to repair small electric appliances. She also learned how to ride a horse. Dorothy was a born-again Christian, accepting Jesus Christ into her life at age 12 in August 1955, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Pickens, AR under the pastorage of late Reverend Morgan Johnson. Dorothy was baptized in a joint baptism at Rhower, AR in a clear running stream. Her first responsibility after accepting Jesus as her Lord and Savior was to become the president of the Youth Department which she held until graduation from high school where was an honor student. As a student, Dorothy participated in Omega Elementary's Spelling Bee which she won every year and the Desha County Spelling Bee winning 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place separately for 8 years. Dorothy was a member of the 4-H Club, Home Makers Club of Desha County, AR, Future Farmers of America and Future Teachers of America. She was 1st runner-up in the Miss Future Teachers of America at A.L Reed High School, Dumas, AR in 1960, ran track, played girls' basketball, and belonged the Drama Club. Dorothy's graduating class of 1961 was the first class in Dumas to participate in a sit-in protesting discrimination in the school system. She was an activist in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (1959-1966) and collaborated with the Young Democrats distributing and explaining literature on voting. Dorothy united in holy matrimony to the late Raymond A. Nichols, Sr., on December 25, 1960, at the home of her mother in Pickens, AR. Dorothy and Raymond were blessed with 6 children of which four children survive. Raymond passed September 16, 1977. Dorothy met the late Elijah Bragg in summer of 1979. They began dating in the fall of 1979 and were married on December 4, 1980. They were blessed with 2 children, one survives. When Dorothy married Elijah, she gained another daughter, Kimberly P. Bragg Madkins now deceased. Elijah passed October 7, 2012. Dorothy loved the Lord and was determined to do God’s will as the Holy Spirit led her. Dorothy Bragg loved working with children. Over the years, she loved and encouraged many. Dorothy became surrogate mother to many. In her labor for the Lord, Dorothy served in many capacities. In the local church: Financial Secretary 1978-1998, VBS Director 1979 to 1981, Board of Christian Education, Youth Director 1981 to 1987, Ministers and Missionary Chairperson (ABC). She helped reorganize and worked in the Nursery, was a former Young Matron and a member of the Souls Aglow, was secretary of the Study Mission Circle, 1st Vice President and Acting President twice for Beacon Light Union Missionary Department, School of Mission Instructor and Adult and Sunbeam Workshop Presenter for the Beacon Light Union Missionary Department, member of the Young Adult and Women’s Sunday School classes, Assistant Church School Teacher to the Jr. High class and Teacher of the V.B.S. Kindergarten class for many years, served on a Pulpit Search Committee, served as Co-Chairman and Chairman of the History Committee, the UPLIFTER Staff and retired in 2017 from SMBC as Church/Pastor Secretary. In the District: Smoky Hill District Association’s District Youth Director (7 Years), District Sunbeam Director (5 Years), Workshop Instructor/facilitator Sunbeam Department, District Registrar (17 Years), District Financial Secretary (1 year) Budget and Finance Committee, District Scholarship Chairperson (36 years) and District Young Matron’s Advisor. In the State: Missionary Baptist State Convention of Kansas’ Missionary Department’s School of Mission Assistant's Chairperson and Sunbeam Department’s Education Director (1996-1999), Assistant Director and finally 4th Vice President-State Sunbeam Director from 1999 to 2013, was a member on the Board of the Missionary Baptist State Convention of Kansas. Recognized as one of one hundred ladies who made a difference in mission, inducted into the Hall of Fame 1996. Her community involvement included member of the Junction City Branch of the NAACP becoming a Life Member in 1989, serving as Financial Secretary for several years beginning in 1996; Freedom Fund Banquet Chairperson, finally the Treasurer which Dorothy held until her passing. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Day Celebration, member of the Geary County Democratic Women Club, Treasurer of Westwood PTA for several years, volunteer at nursing home on 14th Street and later Valley View in the 70’s and 80’s, and the Geary County Senior Citizens Committee member. Dorothy echoed, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine…” and that she did…let her light shine for Jesus, in her daily walk wherever she went. Sister Dorothy was a dedicated and courageous Christian woman who was committed to the cause of Christ. Dorothy was not concerned about what people thought about her; rather she was concerned with what the Lord required of her. Dorothy was more concerned with gaining knowledge and learning new skills. She carried the light of Jesus in her life, for Dorothy absolutely loved the Lord. She was a generous, loving person compelled to run on to see what the end will be. Dorothy worked and waited to hear the Lord say, “Well, done, Dorothy. Come on up and receive your reward.” And our mom, Dorothy, is going to shout, “Hallelujah, Hallelujah, I made it over!” Forever cherishing memories of Dorothy are five children: Tina M. Dorothy "Jean" Bragg - 1943 - 2022

Willard Andrew Johnson, age 99 of Leonardville, passed away Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Leonardville Nursing Home.

He was born on August 30, 1922 in Leonardville, the son of Carl Milton and Mabel A. (Berggren) Johnson.

On May 15, 1947 at the Assaria Lutheran Church, he married Fern Elizabeth Kendall.  She preceded him in death in 2010.

Willard farmed with his father for 25 years, was a partner for three years at a filling station in Paramount, California, was the parts man for Kendall’s Garage and Implement Company in Leonardville and also for Allison Implement in Clay Center.  He later owned Johnson Farm Supply until his retirement.  He was a member of the Walsburg Lutheran Church.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and his special friends, Jean Baker, and Jim and Alice Geisler.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Lilyan Oman (Willard) and Elma Pfaff (Lyle).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 24, 2022 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating.  Respect calls may be made on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.  Burial will be in the Leonardville City Cemetery.

A memorial may be made to the Leonardville Nursing Home and left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Janet C. Dittmar breathed her last on February 17, 2022 at age 73 in St Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, MO after a brief struggle with cancer. Janet was born in Jackson, Michigan, the fourth of five children of Bernard Francis Crites and Frances Rita Crites (nee Finnegan). She grew up in Albion, Michigan, was raised in the Catholic tradition, was initially schooled in a one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from Albion High School. When she was about 12 years old, her parents were divorced at a time when significant stigma was attached to such. In her early twenties, she left Albion for Chicago, where she worked as a secretary. As a young adult, she suffered a troubled marriage, which ended in divorce. Janet persevered and weathered these difficult circumstances that shaped her early life. She became a “city girl” and loved Chicago. Throughout, Janet remained a person of faith. Eventually, she met the one who became her beloved husband Paul in Chicago. After a year of courtship, they were married at Calgary United Protestant Church (PCUSA) in Park Forest, IL on August 10, 1985. They honeymooned in Paris, France. In marriage, Janet gave her unconditional love to Paul, and after working a while longer in Chicago, she devoted her life to homemaking. She loved quilting by hand, was a wonderful cook, and was meticulous and industrious in household management. Janet also enjoyed yardwork and travel with Paul, including a trip to China. Janet supported Paul faithfully throughout his work life and in all his endeavors. She was generous with time and resources in supporting family members, and she was their inspiration in times of trouble. Her shared faith with Paul was of utmost importance in her life. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Rita, and her siblings David Crites, Judith Anderson, and Susan Rosenberger. She is survived by her husband Paul and by her younger sister Jeanine Hurley, along with Jeanine’s husband Larry, son Cody (all in Tucson, AZ), and daughter Paris (Philadelphia, PA). Paul’s family also mourn Janet’s passing. Janet’s cremains will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan, KS on March 5, 2022. Jessie was born on December 17, 1932 in Salina, KS, to Aurelio Camarena and Maria Guillen Hernandez Camarena. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Jose G. Garibay. Jessie was an accomplished woman throughout her life and during her career as a registered nurse. She was a graduate of Marymount College in Salina. She worked at St. Mary’s Hospital, Kansas State University, Surgical Associates, Medical Associates of Manhattan, and Riley County Health and Homemakers all located in Manhattan, KS. Apart from her work life, she was active and enjoyed volunteering at the American Legion Post 17 of Manhattan, KS, cooking, gardening, dancing, traveling and staying in touch with close friends and family. Her happiest times were spent visiting her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was so loved by all! Jessie is survived by her sons, Jose’ A. Katrina was born December 17, 1964, in Salina, CA, the daughter of David Thompson. She married Mitchell Lee Everett August 16, 2001 in Wichita Falls, TX. Survivors include her husband Mitchell of the home in Junction City, KS; two daughters, Autumn Marie McMillan and Cynthia Black; one grandson Dominic McMillan and one granddaughter, Abigail Black; one brother, Keith Thompson and one sister Lolly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donald R. “Don” Hatfield, 95 of Clay Center, died Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor.&nbsp; Don was born on September 30, 1926 in Clay Center, the son of Nellie (Fitzgarrald) Hatfield and Edward Thomas Hatfield, the next to the youngest of 8 siblings; 3 boys and 5 girls.

Don attended Lincoln and McKinley grade schools and quit high school in his junior year to try and help with the war effort in some way.&nbsp; With no luck of getting a job, he entered the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served through 1946.

Upon returning to Clay Center, Don then finished his schooling on the G.I. Bill, graduating from CCCHS with the class of 1947.&nbsp; He was proud of his service to his country and his membership in the American Legion Post #227 at Clifton, where he was a member since 1951.

Don was united in marriage to Valda Jean Bloom on January 27, 1948 in Clay Center.&nbsp; To this union, three children were born: Thomas A., William L. and Iris Jean.&nbsp; Iris Jean only lived for four days and died of complications of parental blood factors.&nbsp; The couple lived in Kansas, Iowa and Illinois before returning to Clay Center in 1986.&nbsp; Valda preceded him in death on November 9, 2017.

After graduating and going to work for Livengood Motors, he also joined the local National Guard Unit and served two years as a Corporal in a machine gun platoon.&nbsp; He then became employed at the Northern Natural Gas Company in Clifton.&nbsp; After a few years, Don took advantage of some job opportunities being offered within the company and at the time of his retirement, he was maintenance supervisor of a large liquid storage field at Morris, Illinois.&nbsp; Don accepted early retirement after 36 years on January 1, 1986.

Don was a member of the Clay Center Christian Church, served as the 4th&nbsp;ward councilman for 6 years and then the Mayor of Clay Center from 1993 through 1995.&nbsp; He was also a member of the B.P.O.E., Clay County Task Force on Aging, the Clay Center Leisure Club Senior Center; serving as treasurer for many years and volunteered with Friendship Meals for many years.

In addition to his wife, Valda and daughter, Iris Jean, Don was also preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings: brothers; James and Earl and sisters; Juanita, Maxine, Ruth, Irene and Mary Ellen.

He is survived by his two sons, Thomas of Midland, TX and William and wife, Jackie of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Stacie Hatfield of Midland, TX and Angelina Carrasco of South Bend, Indiana; Jesse Hatfield of Des Moines, IA, Justin Hatfield, of Rockford, IL and Joy Olson of Rockford, IL.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 p .m. Sunday, February 27 at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral home.&nbsp; Funeral Home chapel in Clay Center, Kansas.

Merle W. Schmidt age 82, (formerly of Chapman) passed away at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan on February 21, 2022. Merle was born on October 3, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of Carl O. and May A. (Ruhnke) Schmidt. He attended Carry Creek Grade School and was a 1957 graduate of DCCHS in Chapman and attended Kansas State University before returning to the family farm in Rural Chapman to help his father raise Herford cattle, and grains. Along with farming Merle owned Town and Country Speed and Custom Shop in Junction City. The family then moved to the family farm full time in 1966. Merle married Sharon “Kay” Bigham of Milford on December 8, 1962 in Miami, Oklahoma. They were the parents of three children Daniel, Jana, and Raelynn. Merle and his family raised nationally recognized purebred Yorkshire swine. They won many state and national shows and had many return customers. As a pork producer, he was very active promoting the pork industry with membership in local, state, and national organizations. They also established Liberty Landing Farms for their Quarter Horse Corporation. When not farming and raising swine, Merle loved flying. His lifetime wish was to be a pilot. Merle is survived by his wife Kay, daughters Jana Howser, Raelynn Schmidt, granddaughter Holly (Marshall) Hageman, and a great grandson Wade Hageman. He was preceded in death by his son Daniel, son-in-law Larry Lyne, sister Joyce Brown, brother-in-law Kenneth Bingham, and his parents. Ivan Lahr, long time farmer and rancher in the Sand Springs area near Abilene, KS passed peacefully to his eternal life on February 16,2022 at Brookdale Assisted Living Center in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was the middle of three children born to Katie (Gish) Lahr and Guy R. Lahr of Abilene. He graduated from Chapman High School and promptly joined the Army, serving two years active duty during WW II. He married Georgia (O’Dell) in 1945 upon returning home. After her passing, he and Evelyn Schmidt were joined in matrimony in 1985. On August 24, 2021, he was honored by the Centenarians of Oklahoma, becoming only the 2630 member inducted after achieving “100 Years &amp; Counting”. He was preceded in death by sister Wilma, brother Everett, and wives Georgia and Evelyn. He is survived by daughter Patricia and son-in-law Richard Orr of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma as well as five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. Lozano was born April 19, 2001 in Manhattan, Kansas. Lozano grew up in Chapman, Kansas and graduated with the class of 2019 from Chapman High School. After graduation Lozano followed his dream of playing basketball and attended Rockford College in Rockford, IL before transferring to Hesston College where he continued to play basketball. He had recently moved to Wichita, to continue working for Foot Locker as an Assistant Manager in their retail store. Like most young men he loved playing video games and hanging out with friends. He was a collector of many trinkets from various trips with his family and enjoyed all bodies of water, especially the ocean. He treasured visits to Houston, TX to celebrate holidays with cousins and family. Lozano will be missed everyday by his parents Mark and Megan Lovett, James and Rebecca Perez-Chisholm, Sisters Vanessa (Alex) Canfield, Brylea Lovett, Taylyn Lovett, Amanda (Chris) Czyprinsky and Miranda Chisholm. Marjorie May Webb, age 85 of Riley, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2022 at the Clay County Medical Center.

She was born on May 12, 1936 in Chandler, Oklahoma, the daughter of Perry C. and Orah L. (Melson) Myers.

On December 8, 1958, she married Gordon L. Webb.&nbsp; He preceded her in death in 2006.

Marjorie was a receptionist for the Holmes-Pfeifley Funeral Home for many years along with being a housewife and raising her three sons.&nbsp; She was an active member of the Riley Presbyterian Church where she played the organ and taught Sunday School among other things.&nbsp; Her absolute joy was music.

She is survived by three sons, Pete Webb of Riley, Joe Webb and wife Tina of Sky Valley, Georgia and Rich Webb and wife Amy of Overland Park, Kansas; one sister, Jean Cockrum and husband Raymond of Guthrie, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Monica, Natalie and Alec and five great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Marilyn Gardner and two grandsons, Billy Webb and Micheal Webb.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at the Riley Presbyterian Church with Pastors Gerry Sharp and Kevin Larson officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Riley Cemetery.

Mary Lou Ellis, age 66 of Riley, passed away Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

She was born on July 16, 1955, the daughter of Lee Norman and Opal Bernice (Lewis) Kruse.

On July 22, 1972 in Cimarron KS, 6 days after her 17th birthday, she married David Lynn Ellis.  He preceded her in death on November 25, 2021.

On January 26, 2022, Mary Lou retired from her job as a Homemaker at the Leonardville Nursing Home. This was more than just a job to her, it was a place where she could use her gifts to bless those around her. Before working at the nursing home she cleaned houses and ran errands for the elderly. She enjoyed meeting the needs of others and her gentle spirit and friendly smile were evident in all that she did.  

She was at home while her children were growing up and spent some of those years babysitting for children in the community. Mary Lou was a member of the Manhattan Church of the Nazarene for over 40 years. She spent many years volunteering in the nursery and teaching Sunday school. The children loved her, and she loved telling them about Jesus. Mary Lou dedicated her life to showing others the love of Christ through her quiet trust in His plan for her life. That trust gave way to peace in the midst of trials, and is a great comfort to those she left behind. 

She is survived by one son, Brian Ellis and wife Michelle of Olsburg; one daughter, Dayna Robson and husband Andy of Bennington; five grandchildren, Preston and Averie Ellis and Silas, Austin and Sarah Robson; one brother, Al Kruse and wife Marilee of Sterling; one sister, Marsha Hudson of Sterling and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 25, 2022 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Manhattan with Pastor Jay Bessmer officiating. Luella “Lu” Christine Klataske, 87 died February 18, 2022, in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; She was born on February 18, 1935, in Marshall County, KS, the daughter of Herman and Marie (Niemann) Gerdes.&nbsp; Lu was raised in Marshall County and was a graduate of Hanover High School.&nbsp; She married Norman Klataske on July 30, 1955.&nbsp; Lu worked as the bookkeeper for N-K Body Shop for several years.&nbsp; She later worked as a dental assistant at Fort Riley, retiring in 1998 after 20 years of civil service.&nbsp; Norm preceded her in death on February 27, 1997.&nbsp; Lu was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center.&nbsp; She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Velma.

Luella “Lu” Christine Klataske

MSG Vigilio “Virgil” Garcia (U.S. Cav, RET) was born April 18, 1948, in San Antonio, TX to Vigilio Santos and Lupe Garcia.&nbsp; The oldest of three children he grew up in Torrance, CA and graduated from Narbonne High School in 1966.&nbsp; Virgil was a lifelong soldier. He joined the Air Force and became a crew chief, serving from 1968 to 1970. He then took a five-year separation from service to be a crew chief for NHRA racer “Big Daddy Don Garlits”, until joining the Army in 1975. His service took him from Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Germany, to all over the United States. He proudly served in the 3/7 and 3/8 Cavalry, 1st&nbsp;Armor Division, 250 Mechanized Infantry, Big Red 1.&nbsp; Virgil instructed Bradley Fighting Vehicles and retired in 1991 at Fort Riley, Kansas.&nbsp; He was proud to have served his country and always believed in the integrity of a handshake.&nbsp; God, Family and Country! Virgil married Lynn Elliott on January 8, 1982. They made their home in Wakefield in 1987. He served his community as a City Council man and he and his family owned and operated the Lakeview Restaurant.&nbsp; He loved the Chargers, Bomber Football, drawing, and anything to do with cars.&nbsp; Virgil’s greatest love was spending time with his loved ones and dancing in the kitchen with his wife and family.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Christina Garcia, father, V.S. Garcia, father-in-law, Jim Elliott and mother-in-law Cleo Taylor.

Mary K. Basler, 91, of Manhattan, KS, died February 19, 2022, at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan. She was born on September 5, 1930, in Pontiac, IL to Martin and Katherine Eisele. She married Joseph T. Basler on May 7, 1960, in Peoria, IL.

Mary was a devout member of St. Philomena Catholic Church prior to relocating to Manhattan, KS. She was employed by Ruppman Marketing and Commercial National Bank. Upon retirement she enjoyed walking with neighbors, spending time with grandchildren, traveling to Europe and praying in the adoration chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in the form of Masses to St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Memorial may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.&nbsp; &nbsp;
