Wayne LeRoy McReynolds, age 78, died on Tuesday April 26, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi Village in Manhattan. He was born on June 8, 1943, in Wilson, KS, the son of Harry &amp; Guela (Westphall) McReynolds. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1961. Wayne served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1963, and was honorable discharged as an E-4. He was a warehouse manager in Great Bend, KS for Harbison-Fischer, Inc. for 35 years. After retirement, he moved to Manhattan and worked for Job Corps. Wayne was a public-spirited man and a fervent patriot, donating his time and talents to numerous veteran’s organizations. He served as a state, post, and district Commander for the American Legion. Additionally, he was part of the 40 and 8 Grande De KS and Sons of the American Legion. Even with all his service for veteran’s organizations, he also found time to be the Quivira District Executive for the Boy Scouts and a member of the Barton County Sheriff’s Reserve. On March 25, 1962, Wilson, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Judith K. Nelson. Survivors include his wife Judy of the home; two sons: Shawn McReynolds and his fiancée Gaytha Ziegelmeier of Ada, OK and Shane McReynolds and his fiancée Ruth Adams of Manhattan, KS; three granddaughters: Abigail, Allison, and Brooke McReynolds; and three sisters: Lois Hickey and Evelyn Ray both of Inman, KS, and LaVona Ruark of Sterling, CO. Charlotte Jolene Lytle, 83, passed away on April 23, 2022, at Valley View Senior Life, Junction City, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Cremation will take place. A memorial service will be held August 6, 2022.

She was born to Albert and Iva (Cooper) Stevenson on June 27, 1938.

Charlotte was a fun loving, generous person who loved all the simple things in life. Driving by a patch of wildflowers would always require an immediate stop. She could look at and pick those beauties for hours and even made pictures with real pressed flowers. She loved singing and had a lovely voice. She was really in her height of glory with her family singing and all taking turns. Charlotte never needed material things to make her happy, just love, hugs, and togetherness. She was never afraid to love life and often could see it through the eyes of a child. She was constantly dancing, singing, eating candy, and being carefree. She was a homemaker most of her life with a few jobs here and there.

Charlotte was married a couple of times and those marriages produced five children: Tim Lytle (Debbie) of Abilene, KS, Monty Lytle (Jan) of Salina, KS, Guy Lytle (Vicki) of Sacramento, CA, Charles Fletcher (Sheng Yen) of Beaumont, TX, and a beautiful daughter, Gaylene Beach, who passed away August 11, 1996. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who loved her as that Silly Aunt Char.

She will be greatly missed but knowing she is hugging her daughter once again gives us comfort.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings: Shirley Reed, Steve (Bud) Stevenson, Bob Stevenson, Mary Carolyn Schmidt, Bert Stevenson, and Charlie Stevenson.

Frederick “Dwaine” Shorman passed to his heavenly choir on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at the age of 91.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dwaine was born on July 22, 1930, the second son and third child of 
William Frederick and Lauretta Victoria Sumners Shorman in Morganville, 
Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

His elementary years were spent at Morganville and Clay Center 
Schools.&nbsp; He was president of his senior class and enjoyed sports, 
drama, and music. Dwaine graduated from Wakefield High School in 1948. 
He earned his private airplane pilot’s license in 1968 and later earned 
an Aircraft and Powerplant Mechanics license from Kansas State Tech 
Institute.&nbsp;

In 1953, he married Rosalie Woellhof of Clay Center and farming 
continued to be their way of life.&nbsp; He was a farm owner, manager, 
operator and mechanic for 53-plus years. &nbsp;Dwaine and Rosalie lived on 
their family homestead for 64 years, the same farm his 
great-grandparents owned. He enjoyed remodeling and upgrading their 
family home which was built in 1874. &nbsp;He took much pride and 
satisfaction in continuing this farming tradition of over 100 years.&nbsp; 
Other work accomplishments: worked ten years for the ASCS, represented 
Vigortone Feed and Archer Oil, and worked at Fullington 
Lumber.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Music was the enjoyment of his life and a song was always on his 
lips.&nbsp; His music career began in high school and developed into solo 
work, quartets, church choir, leading the singing and fulfilling 
requests at weddings, funerals, churches and community events.&nbsp; Playing 
the trombone and cornet was an added compliment to his musical 
accolades.

Dwaine enjoyed sharing his love of sports with his three boys.&nbsp;&nbsp; The 
family enjoyed flying, baseball, basketball, boating, waterskiing, snow 
skiing and riding motorcycles.

Some of Dwaine’s most memorable experiences involve a missionary work
 tour to Kenya, Africa, ministering along with his wife Rosalie, with 
the local Marriage Encounter group called “Flame," and members of the 
Holiday Ramblers Sunflower RV Club.

As a young man of 19, he committed his life to Christ.&nbsp; Dwaine was a 
member of the First Baptist Church and was a spiritual leader. He was 
involved in the music and drama ministry, taught Sunday school classes, 
and served as a deacon.

Dwaine loved being a family man.&nbsp;&nbsp; He was so proud of their three 
sons, Gary, Darcy and Mark, their wives, grandchildren, and great 
grandchildren.&nbsp; He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, 
brother, a good friend and neighbor.&nbsp;&nbsp; He will be missed by those who 
knew him as a friendly, kind, helpful, and caring person.

Dwaine was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Betty Jean, 
and brothers Don and Robert. &nbsp;He is survived by his wife Rosalie, his 
three sons and their families, two sisters, sister-in-law, and numerous 
nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 am Friday, April 29, 2022, at the 
First Baptist Church in Clay Center with Pastor Matthew Coleman 
officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until 10:30 am
 on Friday at the church. Burial will be at 3 pm in the Fairview 
Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church or to Voice of the 
Martyrs and may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2022 at St. Xavier Catholic Church. Fr. Gnanasekar Kulandi will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery. After the graveside service, a celebration of life reception will take place at the Earl C. Gormley American Legion Post #45 at 201 E. 4th Street, Junction City, KS. Jerry was born May 18, 1941, in Lakeview, MI, the son of Robert and June (Imhoff) Hall. He married Noreen O’Connor on October 27, 1964, in Crailsheim, Germany. Together, they had 5 children and shared 42 years of marriage until her death in 2007. Jerry enlisted in the United States Army on September 15, 1959. He served one tour in Vietnam and gave 20 years of selfless service to a military career. He was very proud of his time serving in the military and his time spent at Fort Riley, KS. It was his assignment to Fort Riley that established his family's residency in Junction City in 1978. After his military retirement in 1979, Jerry became the service manager at Don Coats Chevrolet. After working at Don Coats Chevrolet, he became a small business entrepreneur owning Central Auto Parts and Hall’s Retail Liquor. His small business ventures allowed him to pursue government contracting jobs. Jerry was a co-founder of Contract Services. He later became owner of Noran Inc. His contract services also encompassed the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He officially retired from all business capacities in 2008. Some of Jerry's hobbies included racing cars at the speedway on Friday night. He also enjoyed a good game of golf and spending time with his friends and colleagues at the American Legion. He was a giving soul, proud of his family, and a good friend to many. His lively personality left a legacy of lifetime friendships. Jerry will be fondly remembered, greatly missed and forever loved. &nbsp; Marvin W. Steinbrecker went to his eternal home on April 22, 2022 in Kansas City, KS due to complications of Parkinson’s. He was 87. Bill was born on April 18, 1935, at home in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Conrad and Elizabeth (Dietrich) Steinbrecker. He graduated from Bayard High School with the Class of 1953. After graduation, Bill went to work for the United Telephone Company of the West as a line crew in Gering, Nebraska. He married Virginia Bauer in 1957 in Bayard, Nebraska. They were blessed with two daughters. Soon after they were married, Bill was drafted into the United States Army. He attended boot camp in Fort Carson, Colorado and was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona in the Signal Corp. After military service, he returned to the United Telephone Company as an installer and was later promoted to installation and repair supervisor. Bill was later promoted to Nebraska Manager/Senior Staff Advisor. In 1982, he was transferred to United Telecom in Garnett, KS as a Customer Relations Representative. In 1987, he was then transferred to Junction City, KS as a Construction Control Administrator. Bill retired from Sprint in 1999 in Junction City, KS where he worked for 42 years. He promptly joined the Junction City McDonald’s morning coffee club with the boys. He loved family vacations at Table Rock Lake as well fishing and golfing. He and Gin were able to enjoy several cruises and travel to many different countries including being sponsors of the 1979 Scottsbluff Marching Band Europe Tour. He always had a quick wit and dry sense of humor. Always a Husker fan. Bill accepted Christ and was active in church by serving as deacon and youth group sponsor in Nebraska and Kansas. &nbsp; Marvin W. Steinbrecker went to his eternal home on April 22, 2022 in Kansas City, KS due to complications of Parkinson’s. He was 87. Bill was born on April 18, 1935, at home in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Conrad and Elizabeth (Dietrich) Steinbrecker. He graduated from Bayard High School with the Class of 1953. After graduation, Bill went to work for the United Telephone Company of the West as a line crew in Gering, Nebraska. He married Virginia Bauer in 1957 in Bayard, Nebraska. They were blessed with two daughters. Soon after they were married, Bill was drafted into the United States Army. He attended boot camp in Fort Carson, Colorado and was stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona in the Signal Corp. After military service, he returned to the United Telephone Company as an installer and was later promoted to installation and repair supervisor. Bill was later promoted to Nebraska Manager/Senior Staff Advisor. In 1982, he was transferred to United Telecom in Garnett, KS as a Customer Relations Representative. In 1987, he was then transferred to Junction City, KS as a Construction Control Administrator. Bill retired from Sprint in 1999 in Junction City, KS where he worked for 42 years. He promptly joined the Junction City McDonald’s morning coffee club with the boys. He loved family vacations at Table Rock Lake as well fishing and golfing. He and Gin were able to enjoy several cruises and travel to many different countries including being sponsors of the 1979 Scottsbluff Marching Band Europe Tour. He always had a quick wit and dry sense of humor. Always a Husker fan. Bill accepted Christ and was active in church by serving as deacon and youth group sponsor in Nebraska and Kansas. On December 14, 2021, with loving family at her bedside, sweet Lisa Gayle (Sassy) Pinnick Herrs, age 57, flew away to heaven to join her brother Rob Pinnick. Lisa was born January 7, 1964 in Wakeeney Kansas to Jack and Judy Rice Pinnick. From 5th grade on, she enjoyed playing her flute in the band and singing in high school groups. In Junior High, as part of her Girl Scout “Challenge of the Arts”, she auditioned to play in the Salina Symphony Orchestra and was accepted. Many Saturdays, her mother drove her the 200-mile round trip from Blue Rapids to practice with the Salina Orchestra. She was selected to sing at her high school graduation. One weekend, when the family was camped at Fancy Creek State Park in a bus with the name of a band on it, a Park Ranger asked if they could provide music for the Sunday morning park services. Judy volunteered Lisa, who played “It Is No Secret” on her flute. Lisa graduated from Valley Heights High School in 1982. Her flute playing won her a scholarship to Cloud County Community College. She graduated with an Associate’s Degree in 1984. She enjoyed working at many different jobs in Marysville and Manhattan. She made lots of friends at each place of employment. Lisa was an avid football fan, sometimes watching several football games in one day. She enjoyed following the careers of KSU football players. Her favorite football teams were the Green Bay Packers (Jordy Nelson), the Seattle Seahawks (Tyler Lockett), the Kansas City Chiefs and of course the K-State Wildcats. She was also an avid fan of K-State women's basketball. Lisa was preceded in death by her father Jack Pinnick and by her oldest brother Robert Pinnick, both of Blue Rapids, and by her uncle James Rice of the Philippines. &nbsp;Linda Lee McClung, 79, passed away on March 1, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society-Valley Vista in Wamego, Kansas. The daughter of Bob and Gladys Hooton, Linda was born on June 18, 1942, in Niles, Michigan. She spent her infant through early grade school years in the small resort village of Hudson Lake, Indiana. Her father’s work as a successful salesman for Jewel Tea Company brought the family to Illinois and finally to Missouri. Linda excelled in music and art. Following her high school graduation, Linda was hired by Hallmark Cards, Inc. She worked in the Hallmark Lithography Department in Kansas City, Missouri. It was during this time, she met her first husband, Delbert D. Taylor. They moved with their newborn son Scott to Manhattan, Kansas in 1965. Their second child Rashelle was born in 1968 in Manhattan. After a divorce, Linda met her second husband Jim McClung while square dancing. Jimmy passed away from cancer in 2005. Linda’s adult life was centered around art, writing, dancing, music, theater, travel, and enjoying her children and grandchildren. She participated in numerous social groups. She was a member of American Legion Post 17 Auxiliary and Dance Club 2000. At Riley County Senior Service Center, she helped with Meals on Wheels and led a memoir writing group for many years. She published her memoirs, From My Perspective and continued writing until her passing. She was an active member of Sedalia Community Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Gladys Hooton and her husband, Jim McClung. She is survived by her loving companion Donald L. Zehr, Sr.; her children, Scott Taylor (Lynn) of Grovetown, Georgia, and her daughter Rashelle Dillon (Joe) of Manhattan; her siblings, Russell Hooton (Sandra), William “Bill” Hooton (Shelley), Randall Hooton (Sharon) and sister Kathy Edwards. Her beloved grandchildren are Amanda Reader (Andrew) of Lafayette, Indiana, Danielle Dillon and Noah Dillon of Manhattan, and step-grandchildren, Jessica Porter (Kevin) and their children, Linda’s step-great-grandchildren: Clayton, Bradley, and Alexandria “Lexi”, and Brandon Pope (Marissa). &nbsp;Terry Boltze passed away quietly while holding her sister’s hand on Easter Sunday morning. She was 68 years old.

Terry Sue (Newman) Boltze was a Mother’s Day gift, being born on May 10, 1953 in Topeka, Kansas to Donald L. and Bessie D. Newman. She grew up in Topeka, graduating from Highland Park High School in 1971. After graduation, she worked as a service station attendant and bookkeeper for Quality Oil on South Highway 75. She met and married Dennis Boltze on September 16, 1972 and gave birth to a son, Jason Allen Boltze on November 24, 1974. She got divorced in 1976. Terry left Topeka and moved to Somerset, Kentucky in 1978, later moving to Panama City Beach, Florida.

In 1990, she moved to Columbus, Georgia and began working for Wal-Mart as an overnight stocker. She worked her way through several positions, culminating with the Garden Center Supervisor. In 2001 she found her way back home to Kansas, and didn’t even need ruby red slippers; only the love of her mother and sister! She went to work at the Wal-Mart Super Center, later transferring to the North Topeka store when it opened. When the Neighborhood Wal-Mart opened in Highland Park, she transferred to that store, where she retired in 2018. Terry loved cooking, flower gardening, watching NASCAR races and spending time with her family, friends and her cats.

Terry is survived by her son Jason (Johanna) Boltze of Florida, her sister Vicki (Dan) Key of Kansas, a nephew and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, David Newman. Terry will be cremated and a Memorial Service will be held in early June.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Doyle was born in Horton, KS on January 21, 1941, the son of the late Pearl Belle (Baker) and White &nbsp;Barnes. He was preceded in death by his husband Sherwood "Skip" &nbsp;Bishop. Doyle graduated from the Kickapoo Nation School in Powhattan, Kansas; he received his Masters's Degree from Emporia State University in Education and received the 1996 Kansas Master Teacher. He attended the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Manhattan. Doyle is survived by his two daughters, Kali (John) Williamson, of Silsbee, TX; &nbsp;Angela (Jaymon) Hotz, of Bremerton, WA; two sons Philip (Amy) Barnes, of Shawnee, KS; &nbsp;Sterling (DaVonna Smitley) Barnes, of Liberty, MO. &nbsp;&nbsp; He was an avid Oklahoma University fan.&nbsp; He enjoyed motorcycles and was known for his precision in detailing cars

Jeanette Louise Wegele, 83, of Topeka, Kansas, formerly of Alma, died Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

Jeanette was born on September 10, 1938, in rural Edna, Kansas, the daughter of Howard Scott and Geneva Bessie (Sands) Rhodes. She attended grade school and graduated from Edna High School in 1956. Later, she attended Kansas State University.

Jeanette worked after high school for the Co-op Refinery in Coffeyville, where she met her future husband, John Edward Wegele. They were married November 12, 1960, in Coffeyville. He preceded her in death on October 27, 1976.

Jeanette and John lived in Alma and then after his death, she later moved to Topeka. Jeanette worked several years as a bookkeeper and accountant for Menniger’s Community Service Office and then worked, until her retirement, for Kansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Jeanette was a skilled knitter and crocheter and a member of the Topeka Crochet &amp; Knit Guild. She loved to play the piano and sing in the choir at Christ Lutheran Church where she was a member. Jeanette was an active member of her community. For 25 years she volunteered at Stormont-Vail Hospital with the auxiliary gift shop and by using her Mary Kay consultant skills cheering up patients by giving them makeovers. She also enjoyed volunteering at various other community activities. She enjoyed doing yard work, gardening, and baking, especially cookies, and loved everything Christmas. She was an avid Royals and Chiefs fan and loved attending her grand and great-grandchildren’s events. Her grandchildren all agree that Jeanette was a “hands on” grandma.

Jeanette is survived by her sons; John H. Wegele and Joel A. Wegele, both of Topeka; her grandchildren, Melissa Buescher, (Matt Dykstra), Topeka, Tyler Wegele, McFarland, Heather Noriega, Alma, and Cody Wegele, Lee Summit, Missouri; her great-grandchildren, Kimber, Peyton, Brody, Bennett, Adriana; and her siblings, Ronald Rhodes (Janice), Steve Rhodes (Joy), and Sharon Stalford (Ray), all of Edna, KS.

Norman Delbert Honig, 95, of Onaga, Kansas, died Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at the Onaga Health and Rehab. He was a life-long resident of the area.

Norman was born on January 24, 1927, in rural Onaga, Kansas, the son of Otto and Adele Figge Honig. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke Lutheran South church. He attended St. Luke Lutheran parochial school through the eighth grade and then attended Onaga High School. Norman served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Norman worked most of his adult life as a stockman and farmer on the family farm southwest of Onaga. He was a true steward of the land and very proud of his operation and was recognized by receiving a county conservation award. Norman also worked for several years for the Onaga Lumber and Grain. Norman was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church and served on the St. Luke Lutheran South Cemetery Board.

Norman married Ann B. Applegate on February 14, 1951. They were later divorced.

Norman is survived by his sons; Eugene Honig and Kenneth Honig (Suzy), both of Onaga; his sisters, Lavina Kolterman and Marcella Fairbanks, both of Onaga, and his brother, Lyle Honig, of Wamego; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton Kansas. Reverend Terry DeGiovanni will be officiating. Gregory (Greg) Wayne Miller of Wamego passed away April 13, 2022, at the age of 71 of Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Greg was born in Wamego, KS to Charles “Bud” and Joan (Craig) Miller March 3, 1951.

&nbsp; &nbsp;He was married to Betty Jo Dorr in 1972, and together they had daughters, Erin and Sarah. Greg and Betty Jo were later divorced.&nbsp; Greg married Elaine (Miller) on August 15, 1998. She survives of the home.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Greg attended grade school in Belvue, Ks, and graduated in 1969 from Wamego High School. He earned an associate's degree in landscape maintenance from Topeka Tech. Greg worked at Jeffrey Energy Center, Harmony Gardens, and in the K-State grounds department. Greg owned "Greg's Landscaping" for 35 years until his retirement in 2014.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Throughout his life, Greg strived to be outside while working and in his free time. He was usually found puttering around his yard or in his large garden. His horticulture knowledge and expertise was impressive. After his retirement, he volunteered in a nursing home greenhouse, which continued until his death. He loved "playing" in the dirt and propagating plants.&nbsp; He also enjoyed visits from the neighborhood dog, "Hunter" who would visit whenever he knew Greg was in the greenhouse. Greg would give him a treat, and he would be on his way but not until he got a head and neck massage. Greg’s biggest joy was when his grand kiddos Maggie and Myles visited, and he taught them how to plant and care for plants.

&nbsp; June of 2021 Greg was awarded the Jefferson Award sponsored by KSNTV- Topeka for his outstanding volunteering at the nursing home greenhouse. This well-deserved award recognized his dedication to his love for plants and his visits with the nursing home residents. This award was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for outstanding volunteers.

&nbsp; &nbsp;He and his family enjoyed road trips and camping vacations.&nbsp; As members of Kansas Explorers, he and Elaine’s quest was to visit and photograph all 105 Kansas courthouses.&nbsp; They were awarded the Architectural Explorer Award in 2005 and Kansas Explorer Quest in 2006. In 2012, Greg began traveling through Prudent Tour and Heritage Tours, and this continued until his health started failing last year due to Parkinson's Disease. Greg and Elaine took frequent road trips to Concordia, Lawrence, and Lenexa to spend special times with the grandkids. He was also recently involved in water aerobics at the Wamego Aquatic Center.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Greg was a former member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and a current member of the Wamego United Methodist Church

Gregory Wayne Miller

&nbsp; Dr. Jon Michael Wefald, the former President of Kansas State University, passed away on the morning of April 16, 2022, at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his father, Olav, his mother, Walma, and his sister, Beatrice Ann McKibben. Jon was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 24, 1937. Jon graduated from Minot, North Dakota High School in 1955. Jon loved to recall how one of his high school teachers told him not to think about attending college because he wasn’t smart enough. But, never one to back down, Jon went to college anyway. He attended Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland, Washington, and graduated Cum Laude in history. He then received a full ride to be a Teaching Assistant at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he received a Master’s Degree in American History. Jon then attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Ph.D. in American History in four years, and met his beloved wife, Ruth Ann. His doctoral dissertation was published in a book called A Voice of Protest that examined the role of Norwegian Americans in American politics. Jon’s Norwegian ancestors came to America in the late 1800s, and Jon was very proud of being 100% Norwegian. Jon and his wife, Ruth Ann Wefald, visited the country of Norway many times. In June of 1963 Jon and Ruth Ann Joynt were united in marriage. This year would have been their 59th wedding anniversary. Jon’s first full-time job after completing his doctoral degree was at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota starting in the fall of 1965. In 1970, Jon was appointed Commissioner of Agriculture by Wendell R. Anderson. In 1977, Jon was selected as President of Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota. In the very first fall he was there, Jon traveled to 94 high schools in the region and talked to about 50,000 high school students in a successful attempt to increase enrollment at the University. The next fall, freshman enrollment at Southwest Minnesota State University increased by over 30%. From that point on, people in Marshall, Minnesota and at Southwest State University claimed that Jon “saved” Southwest. In 1969, Jon and Ruth Ann were blessed by the birth of their son, Skipp Elliott Wefald, and in 1971 by the birth of Andrew Jon Wefald. Today they have seven wonderful grandchildren – Mikaela, Cassandra, Halle, Jonathan, Kayla, Carson, and Emma. They are also blessed by their daughter-in-law Fani. In 1980, Jon Wefald was chosen to be the Chancellor of Minnesota’s seven State Universities with an enrollment of over 50,000 students. Then, in 1986, the Kansas Board of Regents selected Jon Wefald to be the twelfth President of Kansas State University. He was the President of K-State for 23 years from 1986 to 2009. Jon transformed Kansas State University from top to bottom over 23 years and credited this success with his development of a superb system for the excellent people that reported to him. He created a brilliant system of delegation of authority and responsibility for them and for his new Academic Deans and Department Heads. Jon never would have accomplished so many historic and transformative accomplishments without the great work of his top Vice Presidents, his Deans, his Department Heads, and the great work of the K-State Faculty Senate and the leadership of the Student Senate leaders. Jon spoke highly of all those he worked with in his time at K-State, calling them brilliant problem solvers, with an attention to detail and a sense of urgency – these colleagues included, but are not limited to, Bob Krause, Jim Coffman, Tom Rawson, Pat Bosco, Beth Unger, Sue Peterson, and Chuck Reagan. In 1986, when Wefald became President of Kansas State University, the major concern was declining enrollment. From 1979 to 1986, the school’s enrollment had dropped by about 6,000 students. President Wefald made the turnaround of K-State’s student enrollment his Number One priority. Jon’s first hire came in his first week, when he hired Dr. Pat Bosco, an Assistant Vice President for Institutional Development. He made Dr. Bosco the key leader. Dr. Bosco did a brilliant job. During Wefald’s tenure, K-State enrollment soared from 15,000 students to 23,000 students – the greatest enrollment increase in the history of Kansas State University. From 1986 to 2009, Kansas State University was ranked Number 1 out of 500 public state universities in America in winning the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Udall scholarships. Throughout Jon’s 23 years as President, K-State students were awarded 129 of the highest ranked student scholarships in the nation. Also during Jon’s presidency, he was proud to welcome a number of distinguished guests to the Landon Lecture series, including President George W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, General Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, President Mikhail Gorbachev, and many others. Jon’s Chief of Staff, Charles Reagan, was a master at handling every detail for these outstanding speakers. From 1986 to 2009, the Wefald Administration constructed four of the most impressive buildings in the history of K-State: the Hale Library, the Beach Museum of Art, the Alumni Building, and the Leadership Studies Building. The K-State team constructed 35 new buildings over Jon’s 23 years. The total square footage of K-State in 2009 was 9,207,145 square feet, Wefald’s team constructed a total of 5,943,295 square feet – meaning that Wefald’s team constructed close to two-thirds of the entire campus over his tenure. These projects of the Wefald team would cost close to $3.5 billion dollars today. The Wefald Leadership team of Ron Trewyn, Jim Guikema, Sue Peterson, Tom Rawson, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts, and Governor Kathleen Sebelius led the way in securing support from state legislators and key members of Congress to vote for a proposal for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) building to be built at Kansas State University. The $1.4 billion dollar building now dominates much of K-State’s campus. It was 2006 in the living room of the K-State President’s home in a meeting between Senator Pat Roberts and Jon Wefald, where Jon said that he thought K-State could come up with the winning proposal out of all the state universities in the nation to win the vote for the NBAF proposal. Two years later, K-State won the proposal in a unanimous vote by the NBAF Commission. Jon’s memory at Kansas State University will live on through Wefald Hall, a splendid $80-million-dollar residence hall, named after Jon Wefald in 2017. Jon’s legacy extends through Manhattan, Kansas. Several years earlier, the Mayor of Manhattan and the Manhattan City Council also named the Manhattan City Pavilion after Jon and Ruth Ann. This pavilion is located in City Park, just a short distance south of the Kansas State campus. In 2001, Dr. Robert J. Shoop wrote a wonderful book about Jon’s presidency, called A University Renaissance: Jon Wefald's Presidency at Kansas State. At the conclusion of Jon’s tenure as president of K-State, he completed a book entitled The Transformative Years At Kansas State: The Years of President Jon Wefald from 1986 to 2009, about his 23 years as President at Kansas State University. In retirement, Jon and Ruth Ann made a decision to move permanently to their beloved lake home on Bay Lake, Minnesota. Their family has enjoyed making memories there since they purchased the home in 2002. Jon loved all of nature, especially birds, and wrote a paper about the beautiful loons on the lake, called “The Most Magical Bird in the World: The Common Loon.” Jon fed the birds each day and loved watching them enjoy the food that he so generously offered. Jon, in many respects, was a Renaissance man. He had a curious mind and wrote papers on such topics as General Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Genghis Khan, the Roman Colosseum, and the Negro Baseball Leagues. He loved reading history and was always eager to discuss it with friends, family, and colleagues. Jon also loved sports, and attended hundreds of K-State football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and baseball games. The hiring of Coach Bill Snyder in 1988 was one of his proudest achievements, and he loved every single victory that was celebrated under his leadership. Attending bowl games was a highlight of his years as president, and he kept in touch with many of his coach and player friends until the end. Another one of Jon’s great loves was the K-State Marching Band. Jon always said you have to have a great marching band if you want to have a great football team. Dr. Frank Tracz, Director of the K-State Band, remained one of Jon’s dearest friends well after Jon retired. The funeral will be held at All Faiths Chapel on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kansas, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 23, 2022. A lunch and reception will follow at 12:00 PM at Colbert Hills Golf Course, 5200 Colbert Hills Drive. Jon is lovingly remembered by his family by his kind and generous heart. He loved his family deeply and enjoyed the many phone calls and visits with them. Jon is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Ann, sons, Skipp and Andrew, daughter-in-law Fani, and grandchildren Mikaela, Cassandra, Halle, Jonathan, Kayla, Carson, and Emma. He then received a full ride to be a Teaching Assistant at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, where he received a Master’s Degree in American History. Jon then attended the University of Michigan, where he received his Ph.D. in American History in four years, and met his beloved wife, Ruth Ann. His doctoral dissertation was published in a book called A Voice of Protest that examined the role of Norwegian Americans in American politics. Jon’s Norwegian ancestors came to America in the late 1800s, and Jon was very proud of being 100% Norwegian. Jon and his wife, Ruth Ann Wefald, visited the country of Norway many times. In June of 1963 Jon and Ruth Ann Joynt were united in marriage. This year would have been their 59th wedding anniversary. Jon’s first full-time job after completing his doctoral degree was at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota starting in the fall of 1965. In 1970, Jon was appointed Commissioner of Agriculture by Wendell R. Anderson. In 1977, Jon was selected as President of Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota. In the very first fall he was there, Jon traveled to 94 high schools in the region and talked to about 50,000 high school students in a successful attempt to increase enrollment at the University. The next fall, freshman enrollment at Southwest Minnesota State University increased by over 30%. From that point on, people in Marshall, Minnesota and at Southwest State University claimed that Jon “saved” Southwest. In 1969, Jon and Ruth Ann were blessed by the birth of their son, Skipp Elliott Wefald, and in 1971 by the birth of Andrew Jon Wefald. Today they have seven wonderful grandchildren – Mikaela, Cassandra, Halle, Jonathan, Kayla, Carson, and Emma. They are also blessed by their daughter-in-law Fani. In 1980, Jon Wefald was chosen to be the Chancellor of Minnesota’s seven State Universities with an enrollment of over 50,000 students. Then, in 1986, the Kansas Board of Regents selected Jon Wefald to be the twelfth President of Kansas State University. He was the President of K-State for 23 years from 1986 to 2009. Jon transformed Kansas State University from top to bottom over 23 years and credited this success with his development of a superb system for the excellent people that reported to him. He created a brilliant system of delegation of authority and responsibility for them and for his new Academic Deans and Department Heads. Jon never would have accomplished so many historic and transformative accomplishments without the great work of his top Vice Presidents, his Deans, his Department Heads, and the great work of the K-State Faculty Senate and the leadership of the Student Senate leaders. Jon spoke highly of all those he worked with in his time at K-State, calling them brilliant problem solvers, with an attention to detail and a sense of urgency – these colleagues included, but are not limited to, Bob Krause, Jim Coffman, Tom Rawson, Pat Bosco, Beth Unger, Sue Peterson, and Chuck Reagan. In 1986, when Wefald became President of Kansas State University, the major concern was declining enrollment. From 1979 to 1986, the school’s enrollment had dropped by about 6,000 students. President Wefald made the turnaround of K-State’s student enrollment his Number One priority. Jon’s first hire came in his first week, when he hired Dr. Pat Bosco, an Assistant Vice President for Institutional Development. He made Dr. Bosco the key leader. Dr. Bosco did a brilliant job. During Wefald’s tenure, K-State enrollment soared from 15,000 students to 23,000 students – the greatest enrollment increase in the history of Kansas State University. From 1986 to 2009, Kansas State University was ranked Number 1 out of 500 public state universities in America in winning the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Goldwater, and Udall scholarships. Throughout Jon’s 23 years as President, K-State students were awarded 129 of the highest ranked student scholarships in the nation. Also during Jon’s presidency, he was proud to welcome a number of distinguished guests to the Landon Lecture series, including President George W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, General Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, President Mikhail Gorbachev, and many others. Jon’s Chief of Staff, Charles Reagan, was a master at handling every detail for these outstanding speakers. From 1986 to 2009, the Wefald Administration constructed four of the most impressive buildings in the history of K-State: the Hale Library, the Beach Museum of Art, the Alumni Building, and the Leadership Studies Building. The K-State team constructed 35 new buildings over Jon’s 23 years. The total square footage of K-State in 2009 was 9,207,145 square feet, Wefald’s team constructed a total of 5,943,295 square feet – meaning that Wefald’s team constructed close to two-thirds of the entire campus over his tenure. These projects of the Wefald team would cost close to $3.5 billion dollars today. The Wefald Leadership team of Ron Trewyn, Jim Guikema, Sue Peterson, Tom Rawson, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts, and Governor Kathleen Sebelius led the way in securing support from state legislators and key members of Congress to vote for a proposal for the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) building to be built at Kansas State University. The $1.4 billion dollar building now dominates much of K-State’s campus. It was 2006 in the living room of the K-State President’s home in a meeting between Senator Pat Roberts and Jon Wefald, where Jon said that he thought K-State could come up with the winning proposal out of all the state universities in the nation to win the vote for the NBAF proposal. Two years later, K-State won the proposal in a unanimous vote by the NBAF Commission. Jon’s memory at Kansas State University will live on through Wefald Hall, a splendid $80-million-dollar residence hall, named after Jon Wefald in 2017. Jon’s legacy extends through Manhattan, Kansas. Several years earlier, the Mayor of Manhattan and the Manhattan City Council also named the Manhattan City Pavilion after Jon and Ruth Ann. This pavilion is located in City Park, just a short distance south of the Kansas State campus. In 2001, Dr. Robert J. Shoop wrote a wonderful book about Jon’s presidency, called A University Renaissance: Jon Wefald's Presidency at Kansas State. At the conclusion of Jon’s tenure as president of K-State, he completed a book entitled The Transformative Years At Kansas State: The Years of President Jon Wefald from 1986 to 2009, about his 23 years as President at Kansas State University. In retirement, Jon and Ruth Ann made a decision to move permanently to their beloved lake home on Bay Lake, Minnesota. Their family has enjoyed making memories there since they purchased the home in 2002. Jon loved all of nature, especially birds, and wrote a paper about the beautiful loons on the lake, called “The Most Magical Bird in the World: The Common Loon.” Jon fed the birds each day and loved watching them enjoy the food that he so generously offered. Jon, in many respects, was a Renaissance man. He had a curious mind and wrote papers on such topics as General Custer and the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Genghis Khan, the Roman Colosseum, and the Negro Baseball Leagues. He loved reading history and was always eager to discuss it with friends, family, and colleagues. Jon also loved sports, and attended hundreds of K-State football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and baseball games. The hiring of Coach Bill Snyder in 1988 was one of his proudest achievements, and he loved every single victory that was celebrated under his leadership. Attending bowl games was a highlight of his years as president, and he kept in touch with many of his coach and player friends until the end. Another one of Jon’s great loves was the K-State Marching Band. Jon always said you have to have a great marching band if you want to have a great football team. Dr. Frank Tracz, Director of the K-State Band, remained one of Jon’s dearest friends well after Jon retired. The funeral will be held at All Faiths Chapel on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan, Kansas, at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 23, 2022. A lunch and reception will follow at 12:00 PM at Colbert Hills Golf Course, 5200 Colbert Hills Drive. Jon is lovingly remembered by his family by his kind and generous heart. He loved his family deeply and enjoyed the many phone calls and visits with them. Jon is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Ann, sons, Skipp and Andrew, daughter-in-law Fani, and grandchildren Mikaela, Cassandra, Halle, Jonathan, Kayla, Carson, and Emma. Daniel E. Britt, 71, of Abilene, passed away April 13, 2022, from cancer. He was born August 16, 1950, in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Elvin and Lona (Conn) Britt. He grew up on a farm in the Talmage area, where he attended grade school. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1968. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher, working many years with his father. He served on the Flora Township Board for more than 25 years and as a local volunteer firefighter. He was a longtime member of the Longford Rodeo Club and enjoyed helping with the annual Longford Rodeo. He also was a member of the Longford Lions Club. He enjoyed riding horses, fishing, hunting and spending time with his family, and friends. He especially enjoyed taking his grandsons on tractor and four-wheeler rides. On March 21, 1970, he was united in marriage to Cindy Watson, of Abilene. Daniel is survived by his loving wife, Cindy, of the home, two daughters Karrey Britt (Chris Hoppe), of Lawrence; and Kandi Britt of Topeka; and four grandsons, Aidan Weeks and Jonathan Britt, of Topeka; and Will and Noah Lutter, of Wamego; brothers Ronald Britt, of Maineville, Ohio, and Steve Britt, of Salina, sister Karen Watt, of Salina; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2022 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with military honors. David was born November 24, 1956, in Pittsburgh, PA the son of Edward Lawrence and Edna Mae (Peters) Williams, Sr. David joined the Army in 1975 as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic. During his service, he deployed to Kuwait in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and conducted mechanic support to missions in Korea, Germany, and the United States. David retired after 20 years of federal service in 1995 at Fort Riley, KS where he transitioned to a position as a contractor mechanic. Dave was an avid fisherman and hunter who loved to share his passion with his children and grandchildren. Some of his best memories were spending quality time with his family in the great outdoors. After retirement, his hobbies included gardening, ammo reloading, arms collection, and any activities his grandchildren participated in. He also volunteered time as a civilian marksman training and mentoring kids on weapons safety and marksmanship. Survivors include his wife Sun of the home in Junction City, KS; one son, David L.
