She moved to Junction City, KS to live with her daughter Stephanie in 2008. Angelica enjoyed her walkabout walks all over Junction City. She walked everyday and had very specific destinations with specific stops. She was a very social person and popular where ever she lived. She married Jose Aleman November 15, 1982 in New York, NY. Survivors include her husband Jose of Bronx, NY; two daughters, Stephanie Hager of Junction City, KS and Jennifer Romero of Phoenix, AZ; eight grandchildren, Bethany, Matthew, Jayden, Jayla, Liam, Ava, Terrah and Nolan; one great-grandson, Kenai; two step-grandchildren, Allyson and Elena; three sisters, Maria Rubenia, Maria Esmeralda and Maria Olimpia; one brother, Jorge Romero. LaVona Jean (Bergstrom) Francis, age 85, was welcomed into her eternal home after a courageous battle with cancer.&nbsp; She passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at her home in Manhattan, KS where she was surrounded by family.

She was born on May 15, 1937 to the parents of Walter and Elsie (Reed) Bergstrom.&nbsp; LaVona grew up on her family’s farm north of May Day, KS.

After graduating from Green High School, she joined the Women’s Army Corps and was stationed at Presidio of San Francisco, CA.

On December 24, 1955 at Parks Air Force Base in Oakland, CA, she married Norman Dean Francis.&nbsp; LaVona and Norman moved to Spokane, WA where Norman was stationed until he was honorably discharged from the Air Force.&nbsp; They then returned to Kansas where they shared 61 loving years together before he preceded her in death on August 29, 2017.

LaVona influenced many lives through various jobs and activities.&nbsp; Her employment endeavors included KP&amp;L, owning and operating Tuttle Creek Restaurant of Randolph, SRS, Kansas State University, and the KSU Foundation.

LaVona was actively involved in her community and volunteered much of her time helping and serving others.&nbsp; She was especially passionate about serving on the Board of Directors for the Leonardville Nursing Home.&nbsp; As a loyal member of the Randolph United Methodist Church, LaVona served as the Church Treasurer for many years, was active in the ladies’ UMW group, and participated in several other church activities.&nbsp; LaVona was also a longtime member of the VFW 1786 Auxiliary.&nbsp; In addition, she volunteered at the Riley County Senior Center and was involved with the Randolph Senior Center.

LaVona will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother (Gigi), and friend.&nbsp; She was a true matriarch who had a devout love for God, her husband, and her family.&nbsp; She walked in faith and service in everything that she did. &nbsp;

She is survived by five children, 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.&nbsp; Her surviving children are Cindy Friedrich (Curt), Russ Francis (Michelle), Terry Francis (Heidi), Tracy Smith, and Norm Francis, Jr. (Lashelle).&nbsp; Her surviving grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Candace (Friedrich) Stimmel (Jon and children Shane and Remi Jean), Whitney Francis, Clint Friedrich (Jillian and children Miles and Mia), Chelsea (Friedrich) Albrecht (Zach and daughters Harper and Lexi), Kylee (Francis) Rohleder (Sam and daughter Kamree), Lindsay Francis, Callie (Friedrich) Lehman (Brent and sons Liam and Baker Dean), Tyler Francis (Maggie), Norm Francis III, Derek Francis, Ciera Smith, Garrett Francis, and Zach Francis.

LaVona is also survived by one brother, Erle Bergstrom (Phyllis), one brother-in-law, Gary Francis (Audrey), and several nieces and nephews.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister Rosie (Bergstrom) Reed.

Carl “Tom” Nelson, age 86, died in Manhattan, KS on June 8, 2022.&nbsp; He was born June 13, 1935, in rural Woodston, KS to Carl and Rausa (Hale) Nelson.&nbsp; Tom graduated from Alton High School in 1953. He stayed in the Alton area for a time, later moving to Clay Center and working as a manager for Orscheln’s for several years. He married Betty Wright on October 14, 1989; she precedes him. Tom was the owner and operator of Tom’s Feed in Clay Center until his retirement in 2020.&nbsp; He was a member of the Clay Center Wesleyan Church, and a former board member of the school and township when in living in Alton. Tom enjoyed flower gardening and had a large plot of various Iris’s in Alton. He downsized but continued his passion when he moved to Clay Center. &nbsp;In addition to his wife Tom is preceded in death by parents; and siblings, John Michler, Melvia Paulson, Margaret Woods, and Bill Nelson.

He is survived by his sons; Dorin Nelson of Marquette, KS and Darin (Teresa) Nelson of Galva, KS as well as 6 Stepchildren; brother, Sheldon Nelson of Salina, KS; 4 Grandchildren, 1 Great Grandchild and many step-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews

Staff Sgt. Dana Moen, Chapman, KS was born Sept. 26,1965 in Grand Forks, ND. He was far too young, 56, at the time of his death. Dana was looking forward to retirement, and had lots of hobbies that would have kept him busy including his love of working on projects to maintain his properties, boating, movies, photography, riding his bikes, shooting pool or having a beer with friends. Dana had a love of adventure, family, and was always ready to lend anyone a helping hand. He spent the majority of his life serving our country in the military including several deployments, and had been recently promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Dana was the Public Affairs NCO, 101st Military History Detachment. He also held a full time civilian position with ECS 33 in Fort Riley, KS. He often spoke of his coworkers - he enjoyed both of his positions and wanted to make a difference. His coworkers will remember his joking and sense of humor. He also worked at Coors Brewery for several years. Dana was always active in his community and was a member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Elks, Life Member of the VFW, and was a volunteer firefighter.

 He is survived by his mother Bonnie Moen, and sisters Susan (David) Kinzler and Laura (Mike) Zontelli, his nieces and nephews, Tyler (Katie) Kinzler, Kyla (Zach) Temple, Carly(Zach) Keller, Anne (Ben) Zontelli Zins, Zack Zontelli and their children, his aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Denis Moen, and his grandparents. His family will remember his kind heart and his many contributions to society. Dana will be greatly missed.

Dana Eldon Moen - September 26, 1965 - May 30, 2022

&nbsp;Veryl (Joe) Allen Switzer, Sr. went to be with the Lord on June 4, 2022, after complications from a stroke. Veryl was born on August 6, 1932 in Nicodemus, Kansas to Frederick L. Switzer and Ora T. (Wellington) Switzer. He was the youngest of six. His Dad was credited with giving Veryl the name ‘Joe’, because he thought Veryl sounded like a girl’s name. Veryl has been quoted as saying that he didn’t know what his real name was until he got to college. He grew up in that small farming community, surrounded by siblings and extended family. Like so many that came from a rural background, he learned his work ethic through doing chores in the morning before attending the District #1 School in town. His mother, Ora, believed in education and made sure he received one. Summers he played on the Nicodemus baseball team along with his brothers, actually playing against some of the Negro League teams. He attended Bogue High School, five miles to the west of Nicodemus, where he played football, basketball, and track. He also, was a member of the 4-H, instilling his love of farming. The football team had winning seasons for the majority of the time Veryl attended school, which garnered the attention of the colleges in the state. He actually had his eye on Washburn but when he went to tour, he was greeted by none other than Arthur Fletcher, the future first African American State Insurance Commissioner of Kansas. ‘Art, Veryl said, told him that he could represent the community better by attending a Division 1 school. That set his feet on the path of Kansas State University, where he had a stellar career not only in football, but also in track where he set several records in both fields; many which would not be broken until he returned back to his Alma Mater as an administrator. He still holds one record - Veryl is still the highest rank Kansas State graduate to be chosen in the NFL Draft being the number 4th pick to the Green Bay Packers. In addition, he joined the Air Force ROTC graduating as a Second Lieutenant. His service was delayed while he played 2 years in the NFL, then served in the Air Force as First Lieutenant playing with the Air Force team. After fulfilling his 2-year commitment he attempted to return to the NFL in 1958 but was not successful. Veryl headed north to play for both the Calgary Stampeders and the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League. While playing in the NFL, he married his college sweetheart, Fern N. Stalnaker, who he had met on a blind date at Pittsburgh State. They were married on December 26, 1956, by Fern’s father, the Rev. Calvin K. Stalnaker in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Once Veryl retired from football, they settled for a short period in Topeka, Kansas, where his first child, Teresa was born in 1959. The family then moved to Chicago, Illinois, where both he and Fern pursued careers in the Chicago Public School system. Veryl taught physical education, moonlighting in real estate as well as managing a night club with his brother-in-law and brother, Raleigh and Warren Taylor. Veryl’s family continued to grow with his first son, Veryl Jr, in 1961 and his second son, Calvin in 1963. Veryl Switzer had the privilege of taking a bus of high school students to the March on Washington in August of 1963. Veryl transitioned from teaching to school administration where he worked until he got a call from his alma mater asking if he would come back to the university. In 1969, he began a lifelong career at Kansas State University, initially as an assistant coach but found a greater calling in the Office of Student Affairs as the Assistant Director of Minority Affairs. Through that position, Veryl helped many minority students, fought for increased representation of minority staff, and helped bring national programs like Upward Bound and Trio to the University. Veryl, who pledged the Greek fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, Beta Psi Chapter as an undergraduate; helped re-establish the chapter. As an advisor for several years, he helped secure a house for Beta Psi making them the first Black Greek organization to own a house. In 1988, Veryl went back to the Athletic Department as an Associate Athletic Director. Veryl was an active member of the Manhattan community, serving many years on the USD 383 school board. He served as school board president being the first African American to do so. He was a longtime member of the Rotary, worked with the Kansas Children League and various organizations on and off campus. Veryl, didn’t forget his first love, farming. Over the years, he acquired several hundred acres of land in western Kansas and pursued several interests starting with raising Angus cattle, hog farming and wheat. A testimony to his Kentucky ancestors, Veryl loved horses! It was said Veryl could have been a stuntman! He could do all the tricks that was done in the movies. In 1999, after 30 years of service, Veryl retired from Kansas State University, after a weeklong celebration of activities and accolades, culminating in receiving the proverbial gold watch or in this case - a Cadillac! Veryl wasn’t one to retire so he continued in an adjunct capacity effectively setting up the Earl Woods First Tee Program, becoming its first Executive Director. He continued to farm but after his sweetheart passed in 1998, he no longer had the passion. Veryl loved his family and his hometown, Nicodemus. He worked on getting Nicodemus recognized as a National Landmark and help with the Historic Site. His love of family made him a mentor to many of his nieces, nephews and cousins. &nbsp;Veryl (Joe) Allen Switzer, Sr. went to be with the Lord on June 4, 2022, after complications from a stroke. Veryl was born on August 6, 1932 in Nicodemus, Kansas to Frederick L. Switzer and Ora T. (Wellington) Switzer. He was the youngest of six. His Dad was credited with giving Veryl the name ‘Joe’, because he thought Veryl sounded like a girl’s name. Veryl has been quoted as saying that he didn’t know what his real name was until he got to college. He grew up in that small farming community, surrounded by siblings and extended family. Like so many that came from a rural background, he learned his work ethic through doing chores in the morning before attending the District #1 School in town. His mother, Ora, believed in education and made sure he received one. Summers he played on the Nicodemus baseball team along with his brothers, actually playing against some of the Negro League teams. He attended Bogue High School, five miles to the west of Nicodemus, where he played football, basketball, and track. He also, was a member of the 4-H, instilling his love of farming. The football team had winning seasons for the majority of the time Veryl attended school, which garnered the attention of the colleges in the state. He actually had his eye on Washburn but when he went to tour, he was greeted by none other than Arthur Fletcher, the future first African American State Insurance Commissioner of Kansas. ‘Art, Veryl said, told him that he could represent the community better by attending a Division 1 school. That set his feet on the path of Kansas State University, where he had a stellar career not only in football, but also in track where he set several records in both fields; many which would not be broken until he returned back to his Alma Mater as an administrator. He still holds one record - Veryl is still the highest rank Kansas State graduate to be chosen in the NFL Draft being the number 4th pick to the Green Bay Packers. In addition, he joined the Air Force ROTC graduating as a Second Lieutenant. His service was delayed while he played 2 years in the NFL, then served in the Air Force as First Lieutenant playing with the Air Force team. After fulfilling his 2-year commitment he attempted to return to the NFL in 1958 but was not successful. Veryl headed north to play for both the Calgary Stampeders and the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League. While playing in the NFL, he married his college sweetheart, Fern N. Stalnaker, who he had met on a blind date at Pittsburgh State. They were married on December 26, 1956, by Fern’s father, the Rev. Calvin K. Stalnaker in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Once Veryl retired from football, they settled for a short period in Topeka, Kansas, where his first child, Teresa was born in 1959. The family then moved to Chicago, Illinois, where both he and Fern pursued careers in the Chicago Public School system. Veryl taught physical education, moonlighting in real estate as well as managing a night club with his brother-in-law and brother, Raleigh and Warren Taylor. Veryl’s family continued to grow with his first son, Veryl Jr, in 1961 and his second son, Calvin in 1963. Veryl Switzer had the privilege of taking a bus of high school students to the March on Washington in August of 1963. Veryl transitioned from teaching to school administration where he worked until he got a call from his alma mater asking if he would come back to the university. In 1969, he began a lifelong career at Kansas State University, initially as an assistant coach but found a greater calling in the Office of Student Affairs as the Assistant Director of Minority Affairs. Through that position, Veryl helped many minority students, fought for increased representation of minority staff, and helped bring national programs like Upward Bound and Trio to the University. Veryl, who pledged the Greek fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, Beta Psi Chapter as an undergraduate; helped re-establish the chapter. As an advisor for several years, he helped secure a house for Beta Psi making them the first Black Greek organization to own a house. In 1988, Veryl went back to the Athletic Department as an Associate Athletic Director. Veryl was an active member of the Manhattan community, serving many years on the USD 383 school board. He served as school board president being the first African American to do so. He was a longtime member of the Rotary, worked with the Kansas Children League and various organizations on and off campus. Veryl, didn’t forget his first love, farming. Over the years, he acquired several hundred acres of land in western Kansas and pursued several interests starting with raising Angus cattle, hog farming and wheat. A testimony to his Kentucky ancestors, Veryl loved horses! It was said Veryl could have been a stuntman! He could do all the tricks that was done in the movies. In 1999, after 30 years of service, Veryl retired from Kansas State University, after a weeklong celebration of activities and accolades, culminating in receiving the proverbial gold watch or in this case - a Cadillac! Veryl wasn’t one to retire so he continued in an adjunct capacity effectively setting up the Earl Woods First Tee Program, becoming its first Executive Director. He continued to farm but after his sweetheart passed in 1998, he no longer had the passion. Veryl loved his family and his hometown, Nicodemus. He worked on getting Nicodemus recognized as a National Landmark and help with the Historic Site. His love of family made him a mentor to many of his nieces, nephews and cousins. When the lawsuit for the Black Farmers gained momentum, Veryl was one of the founding members of the Kansas Black Farmers Association. Jesse Ray Howard, 48, of Manhattan, passed away Saturday, June 4th, at his property in Manhattan. Jesse Howard was born in Abilene, Kansas on February 9, 1974, the son of Cathy Kay (Brown) Cosby, of Abilene, and Daniel Ray Howard, also of Abilene. Jesse worked for Home Depot in Manhattan and Topeka for many years as a manager. He graduated from Abilene High School, and attended Pittsburgh State University, Pittsburg, Kansas, he also belonged to the Eagles in Manhattan. John Buel Adams, Jr. “Jack,” 96, of Lawrence, Kansas, formerly of Deerfield, Kansas, died Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at the Olathe Medical Center. He had moved to Lawrence in 2014 from Deerfield to be close to family.

Jack was born on December 22, 1925, in Rocky Ford, Colorado, the son of John B. Adams, Sr. and Mabel (Hallows) Adams. Jack graduated from Rocky Ford High School and then served during WWII in the Army Air Corps.

Jack spent most of his adult life as a farmer and stockman operating a farm near Deerfield. His passion was his farming.

On April 18, 1948, Jack married Patsy “Pat” Marshall in Syracuse, Kansas. After sixty-five years of marriage, she preceded him in death on May 25, 2013.

Jack is survived by his daughters; Wendy Adams, Manhattan, Mikell Adams, Lawrence, Connie Adams (Randy Goodwin), Lawrence, and Catherine Adams, Garden City; his sons, John Adams, Phoenix, Arizona, and Ralph Adams (Cathy), Topeka; his grandchildren, Christopher Adams, Ted Adams, Kristen Hunnicutt, Blake Bolan, Erin Leivestad, and Jordan Crice; his great-grandchildren, Lakin Adams, Tague Adams, Maddie Leivestad, Micael Leivestad, Rosey Leivestad, Keaton Henry (Mariah), Chloe Hunnicutt, Malachi Hunnicutt, and Jaxon Hunnicutt; his great-great grandson, Aaron Henry; and his sister, Susie Seacrist, of Idaho. Jack was also preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Richard Adams, Larry Adams, and Joyce Yeater.

Lucy Louise (Wege) Gifford, age 103, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away Friday, June 10, 2022, in Bloomfield, Indiana.

She was born on September 28, 1918.&nbsp; Lucy was the daughter of Emil and Francis (Walters) Wege.&nbsp; She was a graduate of Fostoria, Kansas, High School.&nbsp; Lucy married Howard Gifford in July, 1939 and they raised their 4 children on a farm in Southeast Kansas.

She worked for Kansas State University in food services and Home Health.

She enjoyed flowers and gardening and was devoted to her family. She was a member of the&nbsp;Seventh-Day Adventist Church&nbsp;in Manhattan.&nbsp;

Lucy is survived by 3 of 4 children: Beulah Ann Shipwash, Donald Dean Gifford and Carol Almeda Anderson, 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, and 1 great- great-great-grandchild.&nbsp; Lucy was the second of 10 children who have all preceded her in death along with their spouses.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter (Ellen Louise Brown and husband Harold), one great-granddaughter (Ashley Toland), and one great-grandson ( Noah Shipwash).

Lucy Louise (Wege) Gifford

Sara S. Carnahan, 91, of Wamego, Kansas, died Tuesday (June 7, 2022) at the Onaga Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born September 12, 1930, Sara was the daughter of Glenn and Grace (Buchheim) Stockwell.&nbsp; She was a graduate of Randolph High School.

Sara married Quentin N. Carnahan on February 11, 1951, in Randolph. Quentin farmed with family on the land that was homesteaded by his great-great-grandfather. During the construction of Tuttle Creek dam the family moved to the Wamego area where they continued to farm.

Sara received both a bachelor and master’s degree from Kansas State University and was a home economics teacher at Wamego High School. After completing a master’s degree in library science from Emporia State University she became a school librarian, retiring from Wamego High School in 1996.

She enjoyed baking, reading books and magazines, raising flowers, gardening and sharing produce with others. She had been an active member of the Living Word Church in Manhattan where she enjoyed serving in the church library.

Sara is survived by children: David (Ann) Carnahan, Nancy (Brett) Nelson, and Martha (Paul) Brach and grandchildren Amy (Marcos) Lerma, Br. Mark Nelson, Paul (Alexandra) Carnahan, Mollie (LaRon) Tripp, Sam Brach and Austin Brach; and great-grandchildren, Sophia, Olivia &amp; Lucia Lerma, and Jay and Quentin Tripp.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents, husband Quentin on April 4, 2017, brother Glenn (Leota) Stockwell, and sister Gretchen (Bob) Dreith.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

Her cremains will be laid to rest by her immediate family in a private ceremony at Carnahan Creek Cemetery in rural Olsburg, Kansas.

Erich Shane Conklin, Wamego, Kansas died June 08, 2022, at his home, surrounded by family and friends after a determined battle with cancer. He was 49 years old.&nbsp;

Erich grew up in Ridge Farm, Illinois where he spent his childhood outside as much as possible, riding his bike, swimming, and playing basketball. After graduation from Georgetown Ridge Farm High School, he moved to West Lafayette, Indiana to pursue his BS in Biology. He rarely missed a basketball game of the Boilermakers and was a diehard fan. (Boiler Up!)

After graduation, he spent four years living and working in nature for various environmental consultants. He remembered his time living in tents, traveling the country, and tracking bats (his favorite), fondly.&nbsp;

Erich then went to work in Indianapolis, IN, for The Ritz Charles catering organization as their facility manager. When the Ritz expanded to Overland Park, Kansas, they sent Erich to open and start the new facility. It was there he met his wife, Cherlyn.&nbsp;

Married in 2006, Erich and Cherlyn lived in Gardner, Kansas, and Erich changed careers to manage Vanderbilt’s in Lawrence, Kansas.&nbsp;

In 2013, Erich and Cherlyn moved to Wamego, KS where he started his own handyman business. Working independently, Erich took his dog to work with him, whenever possible. If you saw Erich, you often saw his dog right alongside him.&nbsp;

Erich loved Star Wars, fishing, cooking, and feeding his loved ones. He loved gardening and planting flowers to attract and feed the birds, bees, and butterflies. He was Purdue Basketball’s biggest fan, he loved listening to the Beatles and having a good pour with his friends.&nbsp;

He was a proud member of the Wamego Pyro Crew, Wamego Ag Appreciation Committee, and the Wamego Whiskey Syndicate.&nbsp;

He fought cancer courageously and tirelessly for 14 months, never losing his sense of humor.&nbsp;

Erich was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Jean (Jeanne) Kinney Conklin.

&nbsp;He is survived by his wife, Cherlyn; his father, George (Noki) Conklin, Danville, IL; brother Shawn, wife Lara, and niece Kira Conklin, Oakwood, IL; in-laws Charlie and Jan White, Belvue, KS; brothers-in-law Monte, wife Penni and nieces Chloe, Cora and Cindric White, Salina, KS; Lance, wife Kara and nephews Jackson and Talon White, Wamego, KS.&nbsp;

Erich and Cherlyn would like to thank the amazing care team at KU Med Cancer Center and for the care received from Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice and for the help and support of family and countless friends during his illness.&nbsp;

A Celebration of Life is planned for Thursday, July 14, 2022, at Iron Clad in Wamego, KS. More details will be released at a later date.&nbsp;

David Bryan Desmarais, 65 died June 7, 2022, in Clay Center, KS.&nbsp; He was born on February 5, 1957, in Taunton, Massachusetts, the son of Robert and Elaine (Schafer) Desmarais.&nbsp; David was raised in Taunton before moving to Clay Center in 1975.&nbsp; He served in the US Army and then the Army National Guard.&nbsp; David married Annie West on November 24, 1978.&nbsp; David worked for the Kansas Dept. of Transportation for 9 years.&nbsp; For the next 30 years, he drove a truck for Girton Propane, TSI, Hill Brothers and Russell Stover's.&nbsp; David was a member of the American Legion and Eagles Lodge, both of Clay Center.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Brett.

Ramona (Mona) Adams, age 91, died Monday June 6, 2022 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital peacefully and surrounded by her family. She was born on October 13, 1930 in Red Lodge, Montana, the only child of Edward and Theresa Berta. She graduated from Carbon Country High School in 1947 and from University of St. Mary, Leavenworth, Kansas in 1951, with degrees in English and Spanish. Mona taught high school in Sabetha, Kansas from 1951 to 1954. Mona married Kermit (Kerm) Adams on May 9, 1953. They had twin children, Jean Marie and Jon Michael. They have lived in Manhattan since 1966. Mona is preceded in death by her husband, Kermit, in 2018. Surviving include her daughter Jean, of Mill Valley, California, and her son, Jon, and wife, Iva, of Manhattan: one granddaughter Lisa Mitchell Banks; and 4 great grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 15th, 2022, at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan. Ruth Ann (Smith) Kandt, age 91, of Olathe KS, died Monday June 6, 2022 at the Cedar Lake Village in Olathe. She was born on November 8, 1930 in Herington, Kansas, the daughter of Peter Paul and Osie Edista (Loughner) Smith. She grew up in the Herington area and graduated from Herington High School with the class of 1948. Ruth met her husband Franklyn while they both worked at the drug store in Herington as "soda jerks". They were married on September 3, 1950 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Herington. After marriage, they were at home in Manhattan for a short time while Franklyn attended Kansas State Agricultural College. They soon returned to Herington for work, Franklyn at the Bank of Herington and Ruth as a bookkeeper for Tatge Chemical Company. With the start of their family, Ruth became a full-time mother and homemaker. In 1986, Ruth and Franklyn moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, where he took a job with the Farm Credit Bureau. Ruth worked at the local Hallmark store, and volunteered with the children's programs at Peace Lutheran Church. Franklyn retired in 1992, and they moved to Manhattan, KS. While in Manhattan, they were members of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. After Franklyn’s death in 2019, Ruth moved to assisted living facilities at Cedar Lakes Village in Olathe, KS to be near her daughter Kimberly. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Franklyn, her parents, and seven of nine siblings: Ethel, Viola, Paul, Edgar, Edwin, Dorothy Jean, and Eugene. She is survived by her sister: Betty Battles of Medford, Wisconsin; her children: Kevin Kandt (Valerie) of Omaha, Nebraska, and Kimberly Burdett (Charles) of Olathe, Kansas; her grandchildren: Arwen Ruth Lin (Jerry) of Chicago, Illinois, Lauren Jean Kandt of San Diego, California, Alyssa Ann Burdett of St. Paul, Minnesota, Christian Charles Burdett (Kelsey) of Norfolk, VA, and Michaela Marie Cox (Brady), of Olathe, Kansas; and her great-grandchildren: Naomi, Josiah, Johnny, Rhett, and Brooklynn. Ruth Ann (Smith) Kandt

Milton T. Rawlings, 80, of Junction City, KS, passed away unexpectedly Friday, June 3, 2022 at Milford Lake doing what he loved to do fishing for crappie. Milt was born January 1, 1942 to Milton E. and Bertha (Bryant) Rawlings at the former headquarters on Fort Riley, Kansas. He graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1960. He was the son of an Army Sergeant Major so he moved around the country a lot. However, he was fortunate to return home and graduate from Junction City High School. After graduating from high school, he began his studies at Kansas State University graduating with a degree in Education and later earned a Masters Degree. He started teaching Government and World History at Chapman High School in 1964 having retired in 1999 after teaching thirty four years. Mr. Rawlings as the students always called him touched many lives. He enjoyed all of his students. On July 6, 1985, he married Barbara Barton Hall. Milt was very active with Geary County Fish and Game serving as a board member for many years along with teaching hunter safety. He has been an active member of the Junction City Elks Lodge. For many years, he ran five miles everyday after school. He also enjoyed his bird hunting with his father at Fort Riley for over forty years. Milt spent a lot of time with his English Pointer. Fishing has been his primary interest as the running and hunting were a little harder for him physically.&nbsp; He also enjoyed spending time at least three days a week swimming and working out at the Junction City YMCA. After retirement, Milt enjoyed gardening and could grow just about anything especially tomatoes. He loved Kansas State Football, Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. Milt is survived by his wife Barbara; one brother, John (Karin) Rawlings of Evergreen, CO; one sister, Marsha Baird of Lawrence, KS; one daughter, Regina (Mike) Oxford of Lawrence, KS; two step-daughters, Carrie (John) VanAntwerp of Wichita, KS and Lorrie Hall Valentich of Dallas, TX; six grandchildren, Levi (Amanda) Oxford of Oak Creek, WI, Sandina Oxford of Lawrence, KS, Michela (Jesse) Pacheco of Overbrook, KS, Amanda Valentich of TX, Missie VanAntwerp of Wichita, KS, Cassie (Jason) Childs of Valley Center, KS; seven great-granchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and ex-wife Jackie Rawlings. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place 11 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2022, at St. Xavier Catholic Church. A rosary will be prayed 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 2022 at Johnson Funeral Home with a visitation to follow until 7:30 p.m. A celebration of life will take place at 2:00 p.m. Friday, the day of the funeral service at the Elk's Lodge at 723 S. Milton Thomas "Milt" Rawlings

Aneta Mae Hagenmaier, age 83, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

She was born on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939 on a farm east of Leonardville, the daughter of Harold and Nettie (Remmers) Classon.&nbsp; She was baptized on June 18, 1939 by Pastor William Eldien at the Walsburg Lutheran Church on her Mother’s Birthday and Father’s Day.&nbsp; She was confirmed on September 6, 1953 by Pastor Virgil Lundquist at the Walsburg Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Aneta attended Walsburg Grade School from grades 1 through 7 and graduated 8th grade at Leonardville Grade School.&nbsp; She graduated from Leonardville Rural High School in 1957 and attended Clark’s School of Business in Topeka.

On June 20, 1963, she was united in marriage to Rabern L. Hagenmaier at the Walsburg Lutheran parsonage by Rev. Carl A. B. Swanson.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on July 8, 2011.

During her lifetime, Aneta worked as a waitress, typist, sales clerk, office secretary at Neld Equipment Company in Topeka and as a legal secretary for Charles S. Arthur in the law firm of Arthur-Green LLP for nearly 35 years.

Aneta was a member of the Walsburg Lutheran Church where she served on the Church Council, the Worship and Music Committee, and held various offices in the Walsburg Lutheran Church Women of the ELCA and Hope Circle throughout the years.&nbsp; She was a past member of the Manhattan Legal Secretaries Association, Kansas Association of Legal Secretaries and the National Association of Legal Secretaries.&nbsp; She was named the Manhattan Legal Secretary of the Year and was second runner-up in the Kansas Legal Secretary of the Year awards in 1981.&nbsp; Aneta enjoyed crocheting, painting, garden flowers and humming birds.&nbsp; She especially enjoyed genealogy and was working on several family history books.&nbsp; She also enjoyed traveling to Branson, Missouri with her husband to attend his Air Force reunions.

She is survived by one sister-in-law, Linda Lucas and husband Rick of Lawrence; Billy and Pam Gray of Crab Orchard, Tennessee; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her infant brother, Ray Harold Classon; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Byarlay, Beverly Hagenmaier and Theresia Hagenmaier and three brothers-in-law, Bob Hagenmaier, Wendell Hagenmaier and Phil Byarlay.

Aneta Mae Hagenmaier, age 83, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.She was born on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939 on a farm east of Leonardville, the daughter of Harold and Nettie (Remmers) Classon.&nbsp; She was baptized on June 18, 1939 by Pastor William Eldien at the Walsburg Lutheran Church on her Mother’s Birthday and Father’s Day.&nbsp; She was confirmed on September 6, 1953 by Pastor Virgil Lundquist at the Walsburg Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Aneta attended Walsburg Grade School from grades 1 through 7 and graduated 8th grade at Leonardville Grade School.&nbsp; She graduated from Leonardville Rural High School in 1957 and attended Clark’s School of Business in Topeka.On June 20, 1963, she was united in marriage to Rabern L. Hagenmaier at the Walsburg Lutheran parsonage by Rev. Carl A. B. Swanson.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on July 8, 2011.During her lifetime, Aneta worked as a waitress, typist, sales clerk, office secretary at Neld Equipment Company in Topeka and as a legal secretary for Charles S. Jeffery (Jeff) Michael Savery, 54, of Hope passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at home. He was born on Dec. 20, 1967, in Pamona, CA, the son of Roger and Barbara Savery. He grew up in Salina and participated in sports and other school activities. After graduation, Jeff was united in marriage with Christina Savery in 1987. She survives of the home. He worked for Great Plains Manufacturing in Abilene for 30 years. Jeff enjoyed golfing and spending time with his six grandchildren. Jeff is survived by his loving wife Chris of the home, two sons Travis (and Hannah) Savery of Abilene, Tyler (and Heather) Savery of Salina; six grandchildren: Houston, Henry, Hudson, Emmett, Isaac, and Simon Savery. Brian Sandford Spooner, Sr., of Manhattan, Kansas departed this world on June 4, 2022, at the age of 84 after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family, who already miss him more than anything. Brian was a husband, father, grandfather, and passionate researcher. He recently retired from Kansas State University after 51 years, during which time he was named a University Distinguished Professor, as well as served as the Director of the Division of Biology and Interim Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. He was awarded the title of Dean Emeritus in Spring 2022. Born on December 27, 1937 in St. Louis, Missouri, Brian was the eldest of six siblings, who affectionately called him “Sandy.” His father was drafted into World War II when he was in elementary school, and he vividly remembered taking over as the “man of the house” in his absence. This caretaker role was exemplified throughout his extraordinary life. He was a talented athlete and parlayed that talent into a scholarship to Quincy College (now Quincy University), becoming the first person in his family to attend university. He was a touch rambunctious in his youth, but while at school he met a young woman named Mary-Rita Sloan, who inspired him to get serious about his studies and this changed the trajectory of his life. Brian and Mary-Rita were married in August 1963, and at the time of his death, were preparing to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary. Soon after Brian graduated from Quincy College, he decided to pursue a higher degree, receiving his Ph.D. in cellular and developmental biology from Temple University in 1969. During this period, Brian and Mary-Rita welcomed their first two children, Brian Jr. (born in 1965) and Beth (born in 1968), and began a period of family life as they traveled for Brian’s studies. They went from Illinois to Philadelphia and then to the University of Washington in Seattle and then to Stanford, California, where he completed his postdoctoral fellowships in developmental biology and embryology. He arrived at Kansas State University in 1971, and loved teaching, bench research and finding ways to move the Division of Biology forward. He was awarded the Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award in 1991 and the Outstanding Department Head Award in 1997. He was named a University Distinguished Professor in 1999, K-State’s highest career academic title. During his time at K-State, he taught courses from introductory to graduate levels, and advised undergraduate students. He served on numerous scientific editorial boards, peer review panels and study sessions for NASA, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His research was focused on the fundamental understanding of the behavior of cells and cell populations, which produce organs and organ systems during embryonic development. He even transitioned some of his research to outer space, with his experiments flying on 18 space shuttle missions, where his work focused on the long-term effects of space on the human body. During this time, he was invited to participate in several aspects of astronaut training, including riding on the KC-135 airplane, also known as “The Vomit Comet.” The home videos from that experience not only showcased his incredible strength and sense of adventure, but also provided the best show and tell for his kids at school! In the 1980s, Brian and Mary-Rita decided to expand their family, adding Megan (born in 1982) and Matthew (born in 1984). One of Brian’s top priorities was being present for his children. He coached t-ball teams, always showed up in the pickup line after school, and with his younger kids, let them come to his office and lab, where they became pseudo mascots for his research team. There truly was not a better father in the world, and while his family is sure others will argue their dads were just as great, we respectfully disagree. There simply was not a better dad than Brian Spooner. From long weekends at Council Grove Lake (his favorite place) fishing, boating, and hiking, to every recreational, high school or even intramural sports game, Brian showed up. That’s who he was. He was a man who showed up for people. Brian believed deeply in science and education. Raising his kids in Kansas gave him many opportunities to share about his beliefs and teach his kids how to stand up for others, even when you’re in the minority. He was always actively working to learn and accept others who were different from himself. In high school, when his all-White basketball team was integrated, he refused to eat at diners on the road that wouldn’t allow his Black teammates to enter. Instead, he sat on the bus with them. Brian believed in climate change and participated in the March for Science on K-State’s campus just a few short years ago. He was heartbroken by gun violence and believed strongly in the Black Lives Matter movement. He also was a strong ally to the LGBT+ community, supporting not only students, but his grandchildren who identify as a part of that community. He protested at the Kansas Statehouse for more funding for higher education and while he hated politics, he worked hard at the administrative level at K-State to make it a more inclusive community for all, increasing the number of graduate students and post docs that were female by more than triple in his time as Department Head. As a life-long Catholic, he was an example of how science and faith can not only coincide but complement each other. His wonder of the world around him is what cemented his faith. Brian loved sports and spent many hours during his cancer journey tuned into ESPN and NBA games. Until his cancer diagnosis in 2016, he still played basketball at noon daily at Ahearn Fieldhouse, a tradition throughout his years at K-State. Brian had a fade away three-point jump shot that was something of extreme beauty…and he knew it! In his later years, as he knees grew weak after years of abuse on the basketball court, he began running, doing 5Ks with his grandkids and children. He ran several 5K Fourth of July midnight runs in Clearwater, Florida where he achieved a 1st or 2nd place finish each time in his age division. His number one piece of advice when one of his kids was having a bad day was “eat a banana and go for a run.” And even though we hated that advice, it always did seem to work. Brian’s life was saved in 2016 by a clinical trial at The University of Kansas Cancer Center. After his initial diagnosis, he was given no more than 6 months to live, but he was approved as the first patient on an immunotherapy clinical trial, which was a complete miracle. He was in treatment for two years, and then lived almost three years cancer free, before a reoccurrence in the spring of 2021. His family is so grateful for the extra time we were able to spend with Brian, especially for his younger grandchildren who were able to know him. Brian had eight grandchildren, and he loved them dearly. He was hands-on with them, attending sports games (even getting thrown out of a game for being too rowdy when a poor referee wouldn’t stop making calls on his grandsons), shooting hoops, taking them on boat rides along with tubing and skiing at the lake and reading with them. All of his grandchildren carry a piece of him, and we are so thankful for the time we have had together. Brian fought cancer long and hard, and even when his body was in misery, he always worried more about others than himself. We will miss his passionate speeches, Star Trek marathons and long walks outside in deep conversation. We will miss his wisdom and compassion. We will miss every hug, kiss, fist bump and word of kindness that he threw our way when he was here. His life touched so many people, it’s impossible to summarize in words (as you can tell from this very long obituary). Patricia Carol Bowen was born in San Francisco, CA on April 6, 1950, the daughter of the late Audrey Ellen (Cunningham) and John W. Bowen. She was the widow of Rick Baird. SSgt. (Retired) Ross James Englert, 40, of Milford, KS, entered enteral rest in his home surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, May 25th. SSgt. Englert was a Retired Radio Chief with the Marine Corps Security Force Regiment in Williamsburg, Virginia. While in the Marines, he received the following combat service-related awards: Combat Action Ribbon, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Ross was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on July 13, 1981, the son of the late Kathleen Rose (Metts) and Ross Oliver Englert. He graduated from North Allegheny in Wexford, PA, and recently was awarded a bachelor's degree in Information Technology from Saint Leo University. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Junction City, KS. He was an active member in the local recovery community where he gained many found family members. Ross was a devoted and loving father. Ross is survived by his four children including three daughters, Alyssa Ashton Englert, Georgia Raine Englert, and Savannah Paige Englert; and a son, James Jordan Englert, all of the home in Milford. Ross is also survived by a sister, Sarah Marie Englert, of Derry, PA, and a brother, Ralph Lee Englert, of Milford. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Stephanie Englert, Danny Englert, Jessica Englert, and Dylan Sloan; and his found family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 9th, at 10 AM, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Junction City, KS, officiated by Fr. Gnanasekar Kulandi. SSgt (Retired) Ross James Englert 

Marilyn Morton Hartke, 89, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2022 in Worcester, MA. Marilyn loved her large extended family unconditionally, was a tireless letter-writer, loved to laugh, and inspired devotion and joy in all who knew her.

She leaves behind her daughters Linda of Westborough, MA, Janet (Mark Bowser) of Dover, MA, and Sue (Anna Bowman) of Carnation, WA, along with loving nieces and nephews. “Ammy” was cherished by her grandchildren Lexie and William of Somerville, MA and New York, NY. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, daughter Nancy Ann, and her siblings Marjorie Morton Mattson, Helen Morton Fincke, Raymond Morton, and Harold Morton.

Marilyn was born on the family farm of her parents Raymond and Leafy Thierolf Morton on May 3, 1933, outside of Wamego, Kansas. She was the baby of the family, and grew up collecting eggs, taking care of her dog Laddie and her pet lamb Bubbles, and trying to keep up with her older siblings. She graduated from Wamego High School in 1951 and then attended Kansas State University, where she received her BS degree in child development and education. Just out of college, she taught second grade at the Wakefield, KS elementary school.

Marilyn met Jerome ‘Jerry’ Hartke on a blind date in college, and they married on June 3, 1956. They built a home and raised their family in Webster, New York and then Sudbury, MA, retiring to Lancaster and then Westborough, MA. They enjoyed 63 happy years of marriage together.

Her first priority through her entire adult life was her husband and three girls, and her large network of family and friends. She created a beautiful home wherever she lived, and loved sharing it with others. An avid bridge player and an excellent cook, she mailed hundreds of homemade Christmas cookies each year to family members across the country. Marilyn also loved gardening and plants, especially African Violets which filled her homes.

Over the years she worked as an ‘Avon Lady’ and in clothing retail at Appleseed’s, and later was an antique dealer for many years specializing in Nippon and Shelley china. Her antiquing expeditions with family and friends in Maine and elsewhere were legendary, as was her extraordinary collection of teacups. Also an avid scrapbooker, she created extensive family history albums for all of her children.

Always a woman of faith, Marilyn was an active member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sudbury, MA and later of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Westborough, MA.

A memorial service will celebrate Marilyn’s life at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 16th at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Westborough, MA. Daniel Hunt, age 60, of Wabaunsee, KS, died on June 3, 2022, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, following a courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was a long-time resident of the area

Daniel was born in Peoria IL, son of Donald and Darlene Hunt, formerly of East Peoria, IL. From the age of 6, he knew that he wanted to be an artist. He grew up creating things in the wood shop with his dad, and in the sewing room with his mom. He earned his bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from University of Illinois, and dual masters degrees in Art Education and in Fine Arts in 1989 from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He married Carol (Brownell) Morgan in 2010, and they had many adventures together, just as he promised her, the two of them and their dog Miles Eugene.

Also surviving are: His parents Donald and Darlene of Wamego, his sister Donita (Steve) Wagenschutz of Longmont CO; one uncle, Walter Butler (Judy) of California, one aunt, Judy Shaw of Florida, his mother-in-law Elaine Brownell of Wamego, stepchildren Kyle (Mindy) Morgan of Platte City MO, and Dustin (Megan) Morgan of Wamego, four grandchildren, Ava, Clara, Liam, and Pemberley, his sister Donita (Steve) Wagenschutz of Longmont CO, siblings- in-law Cynthia (Mark) Naughton of Manhattan KS, Dan (Bonnie) Brownell of Manhattan KS, and Clint (Annette) Brownell of Belvue KS, and many nieces and nephews.

Dan enjoyed a long career in the arts, as a sculptor and in teaching. He taught art at the University of Illinois, and then moved to Kansas, as Associate Professor of Art (Sculpture) at KSU, retiring in 2017. He exhibited his work throughout the US and the UK. Some of his works include the Father Kapaun Memorial at Pilsen KS, and the bronze plaques 'By Land, By Sea, By Air' at the World War II Memorial on the KSU Campus. He loved the outdoors, music, especially jazz, and his grandchildren.

Dan was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church, Onaga KS.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 25, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, Wamego KS.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Onaga Weightlifting Club, or the Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan and those may be sent in care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.
