Bruce David Council, age 55, of Herington, Kansas, died July 10, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS. He was born December 12, 1965, in Manhattan, the son of Bill D. Council, Sr. and Shirley A. (Sherley) Council. Bruce grew up in Manhattan and graduated from Kansas State High School on August 29, 1992. He was a truck driver for Shilling Construction for more than 18 years. Bruce enjoyed reading, music, cooking and grilling, and was very devoted to his work. On February 17, 1995, in Manhattan, he was married to Rose Marie Huff. Rose survives of Herington, KS. Additional survivors include his four children: Brandon Council of Bettendorf, IA, Abbygail Council of Topeka, KS, Skylar Council of Herington, KS, and Bruce Council II of Manhattan, KS; nine grandchildren; and two siblings: Billy and Sheryl. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Shannon. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 15th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502. Robert "Bob" G. Rager, 91, of Junction City, passed away late, July 10th, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House. He retired from Civil Services Defense Logistic Agency after 23 years in Colorado Springs, CO. Robert Gerald Rager was born in Vandergrift, PA on August 17, 1929, and was married to Patricia Ann Holiman Rager on November 8, 1979, in Columbus, GA. After graduation, he joined the US Army Air Corp during the last of WWII, served in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War, and retired after 20 years and 9 days of service. Bob is survived by a daughter, Robin Halzle, of Anderson, MO.; a son, Mike Burgess, of Albert, KS; three grandchildren: Jeremy Reagen, Christopher Reagan, Amber Halzle; and 8 great-grandchildren. Robert Henry Collins (Bob), 72, passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the Morris County Hospital after a courageous five year battle against cancer. He was born on March 6, 1949 to Don R. and Lucille (Ifland) Collins at Belleville, Kansas.&nbsp; He attended elementary school in Prairie Village, Kansas and Jr High and High School in Salina, Kansas, graduating in 1967.&nbsp; During those years he was active in the scouting program and was an Eagle Scout.

At Sterling College he met Mary Neuschwander and they were married on May 23, 1970. They have three sons: John, Jess and Zac.&nbsp; Bob graduated from Sterling with a bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education.&nbsp;&nbsp; He would further his education by receiving a Master’s degree in History from Emporia State University.

Bob and Mary moved to Council Grove, Kansas in July of 1972 where he taught social studies, drivers education, and coached football at Council Grove High School for eleven years.&nbsp; He began his career as a Financial Advisor for Waddell and Reed Financial Services in 1980 and served in that capacity for 41 years until his death.

Bob enjoyed being active in the community and served as a volunteer in a variety of areas including: Hospital Foundation (33 .years), Relay for Life, 4-H Photography leader, Extension Council, Voices of the Wind People Pageant, Washunga Days, and more.&nbsp; He was an active member and officer in the Kiwanis and Masonic organizations. Bob was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church and provided leadership on a variety of the church’s boards and committees for almost 50 years.

Bob had a passion for photography and especially enjoyed taking pictures of sporting events at CGHS for the Council Grove Republican which provided him the opportunity to combine his love of sports and photography plus support and encourage the young athletes.&nbsp; He also enjoyed landscape photography and capturing the beauty of the Flint Hills in his photographs.&nbsp; His camera always accompanied him and Mary on their travels to Washington, D.C., Morocco, London, France, Kenya, Amsterdam, and family gatherings to record their experiences and provide visual memories of their adventures.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don R. and Lucille Collins and his wife’s parents, John and Ocie Neuschwander.

He is survived by his wife Mary, sons John (Jennifer), Abilene, KS, Jess (Anna), Lenexa, KS, and James Zac&nbsp;(Marie), France and his cherished grandchildren; Elizabeth, Ava, Capri, Marcel, Felix, and Albert who always brought a smile to his face!&nbsp;He is also survived by his brother Barry (Linda) Collins, Salina, KS, brother-in-law Taylor (Cindy) Neuschwander, Tulsa, OK, and sister-in-law, Ginger (Ron) Foos, Tribune, KS and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on July 19, 2021 at the Council Grove Dunlap United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m.&nbsp; A visitation will be held at the church from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 18, 2021.&nbsp; The family requests that those attending wear masks.

Virginia Yates Brunner, 93, of Herington, KS, passed away on July 10, 2021. &nbsp;Virginia was born on November 27, 1927 in Herington, Kansas to Bernie Allon Yates and Esther Wilhilmina Martha Yates. &nbsp;Her father came to Herington from the Shenandoah area of Virginia, working on the railroad, and ended up in Herington, KS, where he became an engineer on the Rock Island.&nbsp; Virginia’s mother worked at “The Beanery” in her young days, and after marrying Bernie Yates became a full-time mother. &nbsp;Virginia’s younger sisters, now deceased, were Lois Ann Yates Pagel and Kathleen Yates Cameron.

Virginia met Alvin Pete Brunner, who also lived in Herington and joined the U.S. Army-Air Corps during World War II.&nbsp; They married at Lawton, OK on June 24, 1944.&nbsp; Alvin served in the Philippines and then in Japan following the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Japan’s surrender.&nbsp; Virginia completed her senior year at Herington High School at this time.&nbsp; They then lived their first three years in many different places, often with limited space.&nbsp; The US Air Force was created in 1947 as an independent service, and Virginia convinced Alvin to become Air Force.&nbsp; Their first assignment was Smokey Hill Air Force Base in Salina, and their daughters Christine and Linda were born there.&nbsp; They purchased a home which still stands in Salina.&nbsp; In 1950 the family of four was assigned to Offutt Air Force Base, SAC Headquarters, near Omaha, NE.&nbsp; They moved near the base in the small town of Bellevue, and their third daughter, Cynthia, was born in June of 1951.&nbsp; Cynthia had heart defects which kept Virginia very busy maintaining her health.&nbsp; She taught Cynthia at home for all her years of schooling.&nbsp; While Alvin performed his Air Force duties, completing 23 years, and then doing 16 years Civil Service, Virginia was a full-time mother and home teacher.&nbsp;&nbsp; When she could she assisted people in need.&nbsp; She helped Vietnamese families who came to Bellevue after fleeing for their lives who were known as “boat people” who started new lives in the U.S.&nbsp; She also assisted with collections of clothing for people in need, often for the Indians in the Dakotas.&nbsp; Cynthia passed away in December of 1998 in Omaha where she lived with her partner Mark Aiken.&nbsp; She was buried in Herington at Sunset Hill Cemetery next to her father Alvin.&nbsp; He had passed five years earlier in 1993 with cancer after Virginia and Alvin moved from Bellevue, back to Herington, where they both were born. Virginia attended St Paul Lutheran Church for many years during her “healthy” years.&nbsp; As a child she attended the Nazarene Church just a half block away from her home.&nbsp; Later in life she volunteered to play piano for the Nazarene Church. &nbsp;Soon after being married, Virginia purchased a piano which remained her favorite possession.&nbsp; She played piano and keyboard with a gospel and country group called The Honey Bees, who entertained at local gatherings and nursing homes.&nbsp; Her best friends were Annie Rohrman and Joseph Zinn, fellow Honey Bees. &nbsp;She developed Herington’s historical museum which became the Tri-County Historical Society, and served as the curator for 17 years, until September 1997.&nbsp; Chartered in 1975, she did much of the planning for the present museum building into which the original museum moved in 1984, seeking to preserve Herington’s heritage and the many items donated by early families to the area.&nbsp; Over the years she served in positions in the American Legion, VFW, DAR, and the Main Street program.

 Survivors include Christine Valaika and husband John; Linda Brunner; three grandchildren:&nbsp; Michael Valaika and wife Jennifer; Michelle Valaika Rives; Virginia P. M. Livingston and husband Clancey; as well as two great grandchildren:&nbsp; Kathleen Rives and Rachel Rives.&nbsp; Other survivors are Brenda Weller; Paul Pagel; Nancy Pagel; Debra Roxberry; Cynthia’s partner, Mark Aiken, and Virginia’s God-daughter, Dawn Annette Wendt. 

Her family will gather with friends on Friday July 23, 2021 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Herington.&nbsp; Her funeral service will be held on Saturday July 24, 2021 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. &nbsp;Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.&nbsp; The family suggests memorials to St Paul’s Lutherans Church, the Herington Historical Society or the VFW, all in care of the funeral home.&nbsp;

Donald Ray "Donnie" Baker Jr., 56, of Junction City, KS passed away on Monday, July 5, 2021 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, KS.&nbsp; A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Gnanasekar Kulandai officiating. Burial will follow the service with military honors at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. (Richau) Baker, Sr. Donnie graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1983. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Army. He spent most of his time in the Army in Germany. After returning to the United States with the Army, he worked as a military police officer on Fort Riley. After his service ended, he spent the rest of his career working various mechanic positions. In 2005 he joined the Veterans Motorcycle Club and earned his patch. During this time he held the positions as President, Vice-President and Sergeant at Arms. He participated in various club activities including charity rides, fallen brother rides, and flag ceremonies to other states. He rejoined the club in 2020 and was re-patched January 1, 2021. Donnie participated in multiple fund raisers for Veterans organizations. His greatest joy in life was riding; he had friends stretched all over the state. Donnie never met a stranger. He always had a smile and hug for everyone. He was a big, loud, fun loving teddy bear. Donnie always was ready to sing karaoke. He met the love of his life Teresa in 1997 and they began dating in 2013. On October 26, 2019, he proposed. Survivors include his mother, Mary Baker of Junction City, KS; two sons, Jeffery Michael Baker and Chance B. Funeral services for Jose F. Garcia, age 35, of Abilene, will be 11:00 am Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. Mr. Garcia passed away July 6, 2021 in Abilene. He was born June 26, 1986 in Eugene, Oregon the son of Federico Garcia and Lorie Brood. He had been an Abilene resident for the past 12 years. Jose graduated from high school in Kelso, Washington and served his country in the United States Navy. He enjoyed bowling, working with tools, trips to the pacific coast, fishing, volunteered with the Abilene &amp; Smokey Valley Railroad, collecting and recycling, coin collecting and watching the Simpsons. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He is survived by his Companion Rheannon Jeffrey of the home, step children Kristofer and Elizabeth Holman of the home, mother Lorie and her husband Ben Calvert of Bucyrus, Kansas, father Federico Garcia of Springfield, Oregon, sister Petra and her husband Adam Mattson of Longview, Washington. Funeral services for Jose F. Garcia, age 35, of Abilene, will be 11:00 am Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. Mr. Garcia passed away July 6, 2021 in Abilene. He was born June 26, 1986 in Eugene, Oregon the son of Federico Garcia and Lorie Brood. He had been an Abilene resident for the past 12 years. Jose graduated from high school in Kelso, Washington and served his country in the United States Navy. He enjoyed bowling, working with tools, trips to the pacific coast, fishing, volunteered with the Abilene &amp; Smokey Valley Railroad, collecting and recycling, coin collecting and watching the Simpsons. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He is survived by his Companion Rheannon Jeffrey of the home, step children Kristofer and Elizabeth Holman of the home, mother Lorie and her husband Ben Calvert of Bucyrus, Kansas, father Federico Garcia of Springfield, Oregon, sister Petra and her husband Adam Mattson of Longview, Washington. She was united in Marriage to Garold K Callahan June 12, 1954 and they had 2 children and were later divorced. EllaJo taught Kindergarten in Abilene for over 35 years and retired from teaching in 1997. She loved her “Babies” and gave so many children a wonderful start in their education. Family and her Catholic faith were the 2 most important things to her. She always said she was blessed to have such a large, extended family that was close and loved each other so much. She was an avid volunteer through the years helping at Enterprise Estates, Dickinson County Historical Society and Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad. She was a member of St Andrews Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Retired Teachers Association. Having earned a Ph.D. at the University of Washington and completed a post-doc at the National Institutes of Health, Jerry came to Manhattan in 1974 as a young assistant professor. He and his family fell in love with Manhattan, with Kansas, and with Kansas State University, where he worked with single-minded devotion and unbounded energy for 47 years. In his years in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics, Jerry taught and mentored countless undergraduate and graduate students, and post-docs. In addition, during his tenure, he served on Faculty Senate, as Associate Dean of the Graduate School, and as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He was well-known and liked across campus. Jerry was a true Renaissance man interested in languages, philosophy, history, and poetry. He found refuge in nature and was a birder. He was also a fine baritone who sang with the Kansas City and Wichita Operas and in the Konza Quartet; for a time, he was Choir Director at the First United Methodist Church. He shared his love of music with his children and later his grandchildren. A tireless traveler, Jerry showed his children the world, for which they will be eternally grateful. Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Orleen Reeck, he is survived by his life partner, Stephanie Reeck, of Manhattan, Kansas; his children, Laura Reeck (Steven Farrelly-Jackson) of Meadville, Pennsylvania and Matt Reeck (Jane Yi) of Brooklyn, New York. Joan K. Percy, age 92, of Manhattan, died Wednesday July 7, 2021 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas. If you ask her many close friends and acquaintances, they all describe her with the same three words; “a True Lady”. Everyone loved Joan, as she gave way more back in return. But Joan’s main love was her immediate family, at one time numbering several dozen. But she also loved so many close friends, and truly cared about anyone she ever met. She was born on December 13, 1928 in Fort Scott, Kansas, the daughter of Clifford Burke and Ruby (Bybee) Burke. Her mother later married Kenneth Abell, of Iola, when Joan was still a young age. Joan considered Kenny her father for all her life, and loved both of her parents dearly. She grew up in Iola, Kansas and graduated with the Iola High School class of 1946. Many of her classmates remained friends for life. She was united in marriage to Robert John Percy, also of Iola, on April 20, 1947. Their marriage was a very loving partnership of 69 years until Robert proceeded her in death in 2016. Joan is proceeded in death by her eldest son, John E. Percy (wife Jennie) of Beaufort, South Carolina. She is survived by her sons James K. Percy (wife Carol) of Americus, KS, and Robert Alan Percy (wife Karen) of Toronto, Canada. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren; Tani and Gwen (Rick), Levi and JoJo (Jim) Caleb and Caitlin (Robert Alan), 10 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Claude Percy, sister-in-law Jeanne Percy, and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was a career military man, and they relocated 14 times in the first 20 years of marriage due to promotions and reassignments. Joan had the major task of seeing to the needs of the three boys and taking care of the entire households. Iola always served as a temporary home for Joan and the boys between many of the moves, living with both their parents. The family has lived in such places as Hawaii, San Francisco, Boston, New York City, Heilbronn and Heidelberg, Germany. They vacationed and traveled extensively. No matter where she lived, Joan always volunteered her services, whether as a Gray Lady at the hospitals or as a PTA member. She was an avid contract bridge player, and considered quite good by most. Joan loved being involved in numerous associations and clubs, especially doing charity work. Joan and Robert called Manhattan home since 1967, upon his retiring from service. This was the longest they had ever put down roots. They were great friends of Bob and Lillian Sloan, and Joe and Evelyn Murphy. The 3 couples had one adventure after another during their long friendships. Joan was in various clubs and organizations, including the Pilot Club, Bridge Club, The Copers Club, and of course, the infamous Mall Walkers, aka “the Walkie Talkie Coffee Group”. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan. Eddie K. Lutz, 84, of Manhattan, passed away on Friday, July 9th, at the Valley Vista, Good Samaritan Society – Wamego long-term care facility. Eddie was born on August 10, 1936 in Manhattan, KS, the son of Martha Lorena (Prestwood) Lutz and William John Lutz. He was preceded in death by his parents, his three brothers: Billy Lutz, Bob Lutz, John Lutz, one Sister-in-Law, Rita (Sanders) Lutz, two brothers-in-law: Bill Gregg and Rudy Kramer, two nieces, Kay (Kramer) Cain and Jeanie (Gregg) Lowe, and four nephews Randy Skinner, Steve Norton, Marshall Stewart, and Joe Cain. He is survived by his two sisters, Betty (Lutz) Kramer, Berris “Pooch” (Lutz) Gregg and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and their families. Eddie was known by all as a hard worker. He joined the Walters Construction Company right out of high school and quickly rose from his start as a general laborer through the ranks as an equipment operator, foreman, and retired as a project superintendent for the Walters Morgan Construction company. Eddie was highly respected in the company and was responsible for overseeing some of the company's major construction projects throughout the region. Eddie deeply loved his family and sports of all kinds. He had K-State season football tickets through all the lean years and enjoyed taking others with him to games. He had an almost photographic memory of games and players and loved to talk about sports with family and friends. He followed and supported the athletic careers of his nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews and loved being part of family celebrations of all types. He had a strong sense of justice and fairness, strong opinions, and would do unexpected things to help those in need. He was a good and loyal friend and cared deeply for others. A "Home Going Celebration" will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14th at the Carlson’s Irvin Parkview funeral home with Rev. Jay Bessmer officiating. The family will begin to gather and receive friends beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan. Eddie K. Lutz

Paul Anthony Roggenkamp, age 84, of Wheaton, Kansas, passed away at Community Healthcare Systems in Onaga, Kansas on Saturday, July 10th, 2021 after a courageously fought battle with numerous strokes.

Paul was born on May 20, 1937, in Wamego, Kansas, the youngest of three brothers and three sisters. He was the son of Otto and Fina Maskil Roggenkamp. He attended Pleasant Hill Rural Grade School and graduated from Wheaton High School.

On June 10th, 1972, he was united in marriage to Lois McNeilly at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in Salina, Kansas. She survives at their farm in Wheaton, Kansas. Paul and Lois raised their family in Paul’s childhood home. He spent almost fifty years dedicating his life to dairy farming and raising a family. He built and designed one of the first pipeline milk barns in the area for his Grade A dairy. He was an active member of Mid-America Dairymen and the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He also managed a Hereford beef cattle operation.

Paul loved music and one of his favorite hobbies was dancing. He especially enjoyed dancing with his bride of almost 50 years at local wedding dances over the years. His greatest love was for his family and to see them happy. Paul was great at telling jokes and making his family laugh. He enjoyed planning parties for family events and would spend a lot of time planning the details of those parties on his favorite stationary, a paper plate. He carefully reviewed each party and jotted down suggestions for improvements for the next party. Even after he suffered complications from several strokes, he would welcome his children with open arms and loved for them to return home. Paul’s other hobbies included: gardening, creating original recipes, smoking sausage, carpentry (he built his own sawmill), listening to music, singing, and playing the ukulele. Paul was very active, loved the outdoors, and spent as little time as possible indoors.

For many years, Paul was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Wheaton, Kansas and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lillis, Kansas until their closings. He then joined St. Columbkille Parish in Blaine, Kansas. He served as a lector and parish council member. He attended mass regularly in spite of mobility issues, until his health prevented him from attending in person.

In addition to his wife, Lois, Paul is survived by five children: Amy Roggenkamp, Topeka, Kansas; Steve Roggenkamp (Becky), Onaga, Kanas; Marcie Matzke (Brent), Westmoreland, Kansas; David Roggenkamp (Jennifer), Easton, Kansas; and Katie Lynch (Mike), Wichita, Kansas. Paul is also survived by ten grandchildren: Claire Matzke, Trevor Matzke, Violet Matzke, Alice Matzke, Brayden Roggenkamp, Blayke Roggenkamp, Evlynn Roggenkamp, Max Lynch, Nora Lynch, and Finn Roggenkamp. Geraldine Keating, Albuquerque, New Mexico, is Paul’s one remaining sibling.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul will be held on Monday, July 19, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Blaine, Kansas. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Wheaton, Kansas. There will be a visitation on Sunday, July 18th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and a Rosary prayer service at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to the Paul Roggenkamp Memorial Fund to be designated later by the family, and those may be sent in care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home.&nbsp;

He attended Pleasant Hill Rural Grade School and graduated from Wheaton High School.On June 10th, 1972, he was united in marriage to Lois McNeilly at St. Mary Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in Salina, Kansas. She survives at their farm in Wheaton, Kansas. Paul and Lois raised their family in Paul’s childhood home. He spent almost fifty years dedicating his life to dairy farming and raising a family. He built and designed one of the first pipeline milk barns in the area for his Grade A dairy. He was an active member of Mid-America Dairymen and the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He also managed a Hereford beef cattle operation.Paul loved music and one of his favorite hobbies was dancing. He especially enjoyed dancing with his bride of almost 50 years at local wedding dances over the years. His greatest love was for his family and to see them happy. Paul was great at telling jokes and making his family laugh. He enjoyed planning parties for family events and would spend a lot of time planning the details of those parties on his favorite stationary, a paper plate. He carefully reviewed each party and jotted down suggestions for improvements for the next party. Even after he suffered complications from several strokes, he would welcome his children with open arms and loved for them to return home. Paul’s other hobbies included: gardening, creating original recipes, smoking sausage, carpentry (he built his own sawmill), listening to music, singing, and playing the ukulele. Paul was very active, loved the outdoors, and spent as little time as possible indoors.For many years, Paul was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Wheaton, Kansas and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lillis, Kansas until their closings. He then joined St. Columbkille Parish in Blaine, Kansas. He served as a lector and parish council member. He attended mass regularly in spite of mobility issues, until his health prevented him from attending in person.In addition to his wife, Lois, Paul is survived by five children: Amy Roggenkamp, Topeka, Kansas; Steve Roggenkamp (Becky), Onaga, Kanas; Marcie Matzke (Brent), Westmoreland, Kansas; David Roggenkamp (Jennifer), Easton, Kansas; and Katie Lynch (Mike), Wichita, Kansas. Paul is also survived by ten grandchildren: Claire Matzke, Trevor Matzke, Violet Matzke, Alice Matzke, Brayden Roggenkamp, Blayke Roggenkamp, Evlynn Roggenkamp, Max Lynch, Nora Lynch, and Finn Roggenkamp. Geraldine Keating, Albuquerque, New Mexico, is Paul’s one remaining sibling.A Mass of Christian Burial for Paul will be held on Monday, July 19, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Blaine, Kansas. Burial will follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Wheaton, Kansas. There will be a visitation on Sunday, July 18th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and a Rosary prayer service at 7:00 p.m.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested to the Paul Roggenkamp Memorial Fund to be designated later by the family, and those may be sent in care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home.&nbsp;

Linda Louise (Ayers) Foster, 65, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021 after a long battle of COPD and lung cancer.

 Linda was born on September 27, 1955 to William Carson and Thelma Rose  Ayres in Arkansas. As a child, she excelled in many sports, especially basketball. After graduating from Hill City, Kansas High School in 1973 she was awarded a basketball scholarship to Colby Community College. She was an excellent cook and pursued that as her lifetime career. She took several classes and became a certified baker. Linda was known to make the best homemade cinnamon rolls around. Linda served as a baker and cook at school and at McPherson Hospital where she retired 18 months ago. Linda loved to bake her famous cinnamon rolls, to play bingo, thoroughly enjoyed scratching lottery tickets for winners, enjoyed being with people, and being at her children and grandchildren’s sporting events which she seldom missed. She was also a big KU fan. Her kindness to others will always be remembered.

 She is preceded in death by her father; three sisters, Lucille, Shirley, Brenda; and four brothers, Larry, Jerry, Alvin, and Kenny Ayers. She is survived by her mother, Thelma Ayers; brother and his wife, Kim and Lana Ayers; four sons, Brian Billinger of Newton, Bradley Billinger of Canton, Kansas, Brent Billinger of Canton, Kansas, Christopher Billinger of Herington, Kansas; two daughters, Brandy Gutierrez of Great Bend, Kansas and Krystal Billinger of McPherson, Kansas; 11 grandchildren.

Willis’ life began on February 11, 1941, in the Hillsboro Hospital.  He was the son of Curtis R. and Winifred (Nansen) Peterson.  Willis was in the first graduating class of Centre High School (1959). He played football and was in the band.  He continued his education at Kansas State University where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity (Alpha Iota Chapter) and Army ROTC. Willis graduated in 1964 with a degree in Milling Technology.  Willis operated the Cargill Mill in Wichita for 15 plus years and previously, he worked in the oil fields.

  Farming his land was his true calling and during his working life he commuted 80 miles each way nearly every day to be able to live on his farm. After retiring in 2004 from Cargill Mill he continued to farm in Morris and Marion County. He was a member Hebron Lutheran Church in Burdick and also attended Aulne Church. Willis enjoyed collecting agricultural antiques.  He was united in marriage to the former Karyn “Sue” Glenn on July 3, 2004, at Marion County Lake.

  His loving family includes his wife Sue of Marion, children Daine (Kat) Peterson of Hillsboro, Curtis (Marcy) Peterson of Holcomb, and Troy (Chris) Peterson of Lincolnville; grandchildren Amanda, Dakota, Cheyenne, Avery, Ty, Jon, Sydnee, Jakob, Nick, Emilee, Tucker, Michael, Sabrina, Brandon, Taylor, Hannah and Grace; several great grandchildren; his twin brother Warren Peterson of Sedona, AZ and niece and nephew Sam and Katie. Willis will also be missed by his beloved fur babies Zoey, Suzy and Pia.  Willis was preceded in death by his beloved infant son, David Joel and his faithful dog Bobby.

  His family will gather with friends for his memorial service on Saturday July 17th at 10 a.m. in the Marion County Lake Shelter House on the East Side of the lake. James was born October 18, 1934 in Hooker, OK. the son of William Wesley and Edith Vance (Dungan) Nelson. James came to Junction City in 1982 as the vice-president and cashier at First National Bank. After his retirement at the bank, he worked for Gfeller Accounting Firm and later at Willhoite's, Inc. John Deere and Buick Dealerships in Junction City, KS. He also worked for Hettenbach and Langdon in Abilene, KS. James graduated from the University of Wichita and became a Certified Public Accountant. James served his country serving in the United States Army Reserves for seven years. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Abilene. Over the years, he did a lot of work with local theatre in Wichita and Junction City. He was a history buff and avid reader who enjoyed traveling visiting historical places. He married Phyllis Vogt June 24, 1966 in Wichita, KS. He is survived by his wife Phyllis of the home in Junction City; one son, Kelly Nelson and his wife Michelle of Kingston, GA; one grandson, Jesse Nelson and his wife Nikki of Woodstock, GA; one granddaughter, Jamie Nelson of Kingston, GA; one great-grandson, Nathan Nelson; numerous nephews and nieces. Delores Jean "D" Daymude - 1936 - 2021

Ethel Dolores Hurtig Gowdy was born on September 23, 1932 in Delphos, Kansas. She passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 8, 2021 in Lansing, Kansas. Her father was Alfred Frank Hurtig of Delphos, Kansas and her mother was Vida Lillian Durst, also of Delphos, Kansas. She grew up and worked helping her mother on her parents’ wheat and cattle farm. As a 9-year old she survived the tornado of May 31, 1942 with her family in their storm shelter. She attended Delphos (KS) High School where she graduated in the class of 1950. There she met and became friends with Kenneth King Gowdy, who eventually became her husband. He worked for her father in the summers during wheat harvest on a custom combining crew. Dolores attended Kansas State College (now University) from 1950-1954 receiving her B.A. degree in Home Economics and during her life she filled her home with her talents. She was also a member of the Sigma Chi sorority. Dolores and Kenneth were married in the Methodist Church in Delphos, Kansas on August 24, 1952. They became the loving parents of four children: John David, Elizabeth Ann, Michael King, and Mark Alan. Family time took a priority and holidays we were often spent with relatives, as well as regular summer vacations to Colorado. After their children we were grown, Ken &amp; Dolores enjoyed traveling together, especially to Vancouver, British Columbia and to Ireland. They also collected many antiques. Dolores spent many years as a Girl Scout Leader in Manhattan, Kansas and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She loved to quilt and to bake. She also enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Her favorite times and memories were made on holidays and visits gathering with her family and relatives. As a devoted and beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend she will be greatly missed. She is survived by two sons, David (Norlene) and Mark. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth, her brothers William Hurtig and Armon Hurtig, her son Michael, and her daughter Elizabeth. She has eleven grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren. Doris Mae Swartz, age 83, of Manhattan, died July 2, 2021 at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan. She was born on December 11, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of William and Alma (Stocker) Morton. She grew up in the Chicago area and graduated from Oak Park Forest High School in Oak Park, Illinois with the class of 1955. Doris worked for a period of time with E.J. Brach and Sons and then also at the Sunbeam Corporation, then the United States Gypsum Company all in Chicago. She was a secretary and supervisor in many different roles with those companies. On April 6, 1963 she was united in marriage to Stuart E. Swartz. He survives at their home in Manhattan. They adopted 2 children, Johnny and Christy. She and Stuart came to Manhattan, when Stuart accepted a position at Kansas State University. Doris was a member of the First Baptist Church in Manhattan. She served on many church boards and was also a chairman and secretary of the Church Circle. Also, while at the church and teaching preschool she wrote many stories about the kids, they were used for the church newsletter, keeping the church updated on the preschool. Doris taught vacation Bible School and she attended many Christian Education workshops. She volunteered for many positions, at the St. Joseph Senior Community, as a 4-H Instructor, Girls Scout and Brownie Leader, the Pioneer Girls Leader, and in many areas at the schools in Manhattan in addition to being a Title 1 Aide at Bluemont Elementary, she also was a crossing guard for a period of time. Doris loved to take care of, teach, and watch kids learn. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and one sister. Doris is survived by her husband Stuart and her son Johnny of Manhattan, and her daughter Christy Harris (Cameron) of Perth, Australia, and her granddaughter Adeline Harris. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the First Baptist Church, 2121 Bluehills Road in Manhattan. Private inurnment will be held at a later date. Doris Mae Swartz

Martha Elaine Onek Biesenthal, age 91, was called to her heavenly home on July 7, 2021 at the Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice of Manhattan.

Martha was born on November 8, 1929, just north of Hiawatha, Kansas. She was the first of five children born to George and Dorothy Fiegenbaum-Onek. On November 17, 1929. God adopted Martha as His own when she was baptized by the Rev. A.H. Kerstner at their home. She was confirmed in her Christian faith on April 2, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church of Hiawatha. She once remarked how much she loved Catechism and Sunday School and how central it was to their family life. She later became a member ofSt. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Wheaton, Kansas.

Martha began her education at Central Elementary School in Hiawatha where her favorite subject was reading. She would comment that she did not go to the movies, she went to the library. She loved to read her entire life, reading avidly into her 80’s, encouraging her children and grandchildren to also read. She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1947. During high school Martha worked at a small restaurant owned by friends from their church. Later she was employed at the Telephone Company and at Bierer’s Clothing Store, assisting women in their clothing selections.

She once shared that she prayed that God would send her a Christian man. God answered her prayer when Cleason Biesenthal came to Hiawatha from Wheaton, to attend a play with several of his friends. His friends both had girlfriends at the time and Cleason tagged along. After that evening, Cleason also had a girlfriend in Hiawatha and he and Martha eventually married on October 18, 1950, at Zion Lutheran Church. They settled into their home south of Wheaton where they worked together for 58 years. Together with their children, Mary, Jane, David, Ruth, and Frederick they earned their living through farming, raising hogs, operating a dairy, and raising beef cattle. Over the years Martha dressed innumerable chickens, learned how to peel potatoes in record speed and made some of the best homemade cinnamon rolls and dinner rolls that you have ever eaten.

When Cleason passed in 2008, Martha chose to remain on the farm near Wheaton and lived there until she moved to Vintage Park Assisted Living in Wamego in 2016. Those who knew Martha will recall her sense of humor, it was one that you would never forget, and would sometimes make you blush. She took life in stride and used her sense of humor to face the challenges in her life. Martha’s door was always open to a neighbor, friend or stray animal who needed a friendly smile or a warm hug.

Martha Elaine Onek Biesenthal, age 91, was called to her heavenly home on July 7, 2021 at the Good Shepherd Home Care and Hospice of Manhattan.Martha was born on November 8, 1929, just north of Hiawatha, Kansas. She was the first of five children born to George and Dorothy Fiegenbaum-Onek. On November 17, 1929. God adopted Martha as His own when she was baptized by the Rev. A.H. Kerstner at their home. She was confirmed in her Christian faith on April 2, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church of Hiawatha. She once remarked how much she loved Catechism and Sunday School and how central it was to their family life. She later became a member ofSt. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Wheaton, Kansas.Martha began her education at Central Elementary School in Hiawatha where her favorite subject was reading. She would comment that she did not go to the movies, she went to the library. She loved to read her entire life, reading avidly into her 80’s, encouraging her children and grandchildren to also read. She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1947. During high school Martha worked at a small restaurant owned by friends from their church. William “Bill” Elroy Nelson, 83, of Wamego, Kansas, peacefully passed away on July 7, 2021, at Wellsprings of Westmoreland.

Bill was born March 4, 1938, in Yakama, Washington, the son of Cecil William and Eldilita Mae (Henn) Nelson. Bill attended Randolph High School until he left and joined the Marine Corps where he served for four years.

Bill married Vivian O’Neal and the couple later divorced. That union was blessed with one son, William “Billy” Nelson. Bill was married to Mary Lou (Prockish) Bammes on July 2, 1987, in Westmorland. She preceded him in death on November 7, 2015.

Bill spent many years on the road as an over-the-road trucker and worked locally for Steel &amp; Pipe. He also operated, for many years, heavy equipment and drove for MCM of Wamego.

He loved music and was an avid Elvis, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash fan. He enjoyed cooking, playing cards, throwing horseshoes, and collecting classic car replicas and John Wayne memorabilia.

Bill was also preceded in death by his father in 1971; his mother in 2005; his daughter, Patti Nelson, in 2013, and grandson, Casey Nelson in 2018.

Bill is survived by his son, William “Billy” D. Nelson (Dianna); Krugerville, Texas; his stepdaughters, Sherry Figge (Rex) and Karry Clark (Kevin), both of Wamego; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Vera Roberta Ross, 78, of Wamego, Kansas, died Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at the Via Christi Health Center in Manhattan. She was a long-time resident of the community.

Vera was born on June 30, 1943, in Axtell, Kansas, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Thomas Sunnenberg. She attended catholic school and graduated in 1961 in Baileyville.

Vera worked for several years as a CNA in both hospitals and nursing homes. She also worked for Hy-Vee Supermarket. She loved working with the customers and was known for her friendliness. Vera loved to play Bingo and go to the casino. She was always willing to go shopping or to a garage sale. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed being a part of their lives. Vera was an avid KU fan. She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Vera never knew a stranger. She enjoyed visiting and was always willing to lend a hand to someone who needed her. Bringing someone food or sending a card was common practice for her. Vera had a heart of gold. Vera married Thomas Lee Harcrow in 1965. They were later divorced. On August 10, 1975, Vera Married Kenneth Ross in Wamego. He survives at their home.

She is also survived by her children; Ed Harcrow (Shelley), Wamego, Dean Harcrow (Janice), Hutchinson, and Kendra Messerly, Wamego; her grandchildren, Tommy Harcrow and Ashlyn Harcrow, both of Lakin, Edward Harcrow, Wamego, Jacob Harcrow, Tristan Harcrow, and Connor Harcrow, all of Hutchinson, and Dylan Ross (Katlyn Dorn), Wamego; her siblings, Rita Chauza, Douglas, Nebraska, Jerry Sunnenberg (Sharon), Joplin, Missouri, Anna Mae Slack, Wamego, and Josephine Wiggins, Marysville. Lloyd Florence went home on July 4, 2021. He was born May 20, 1946 in Junction City, Kansas, the son of George and Alice (Horne) Florence.&nbsp;

Lloyd was a veteran who served his country from 1965 – 1969 in the submarine service. He was a cook.

He married Marlene Hill in 1967; they had 54 wonderful years together.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lloyd enjoyed his museum and passing his knowledge of history to others. He loved visiting with and helping his many friends and family.

He was preceded in death by both parents.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lloyd is survived by his wife Marlene Florence; son Jeff Florence and wife Jennifer; daughter Lori Knight and husband Randy; sister Myrta Townsend and husband Robert; grandchildren: Toby Florence (Jen), Elizabeth Florence, Tori Masters and Kate Masters; great-grandchildren: Max Olsen, McKenzie Olsen, Hayden Florence, Hudson Florence and Maverick Florence; and a host of friends.

Lloyd Eugene Florence - May 20, 1946-July 4, 2021 (age 75)

Rev. Dr. Maliepule Tauala, 77 from Ta'u, Manu'a of American Samoa took his last breath on 23 June 2021 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. He was born to Fa'aga (Mother) and Peteru (Father) Tauala on 23 September 1943. Maliepule lived a life of service not only to his beautiful island of Samoa and it's people, his beloved Family and Friends but also his faithful service in Christ. He was a graduate of the California Graduate School of Theology in Anaheim, California earning his Ph.D in the categories of Doctor's of Philosophy and Divinity for ministry. He served as the Pastor for the Congregational Christian Church (CCCSA) in Taputimu American Samoa, as well as the Associate Pastor for the Congregational Christian Church (CCCAS) in Ta'u Manu'atele, American Samoa. He was the Director for the Youth and Sunday School of the District in Manu'atele and the Senior Advisor for the village of Ta'u for their Youth and Sunday School program. Maliepule was a member of the village of Luma, Ta'u Manu'atele's Choir. He was the Director for the Samoan Culture and World History at Manu'atele High School in Ta'u, Manu'atele. He was the Senior Advisor of the National Honor Society at Manu'atele High School from 2004 to 2005. He retired in 2017 after serving as the Program Director for the Community Service's Division in the Department of Education (DOE) in American Samoa. He was a Culltural Advisor and a greatly sought out Family Historian. He was a great fisherman and the best farmer in Ta'u, Manu'atele. His favorite sport was Golf and he played in many tournaments to include bowling. He loved the Lord, his Family and is very proud to be Manu'atele for life. On 17 May 1971, he married Fetoa'i Allen of Aua, American Samoa in Oceanside California at the Assembly of God sanctuary. Maliepule Tauala is survived by his spouse Mrs. Fetoa'i Tauala; Daughter's Mrs. Lupeolefoaga Fa'afouina Manuatu and Mrs. Jeannie Selau Jones; Son, Siautafu Mike Tauala and the multitude of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Maliepule Tauala

Graveside funeral services for Walter A. Hartman, age 93, of Abilene, will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Mr. Hartman passed away July 7, 2021 at the Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman. He was born July 11, 1927 in Clay Center the son of Walter W. and Elida Mae (Palmeeter) Hartman. He graduated from Clay Center High School and served his country in the United State Navy during WWII. Walter worked for RCA as a telemetry engineer from 1955 – 1966, then from 1967 – 1971 for Sperry Rand as an electrical engineer for the Saturn V Apollo Missions, and from 1975 – 1990 for Black and Veach Engineering Company as a records manager before retiring. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, and the American Legion all in Abilene. On June 13, 1948 Walter was united in marriage to Dorothy Sawin in LaPrairie, Illinois. She passed away September 25, 2014. Walter is also preceded in death by his sister DoraDeane Lips. Walter is survived by his son Gene and his wife Jan Hartman of Abilene, grandchildren Brian Hartman, Brad and his wife Jenell Hartman, and Cristin and her husband Pat Casteel, and 5 great grandchildren. Graveside funeral services for Walter A. Hartman, age 93, of Abilene, will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Clay Center with Pastor Lindsey Brummer officiating. Mr. Hartman passed away July 7, 2021 at the Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman. He was born July 11, 1927 in Clay Center the son of Walter W. and Elida Mae (Palmeeter) Hartman. He graduated from Clay Center High School and served his country in the United State Navy during WWII. Walter worked for RCA as a telemetry engineer from 1955 – 1966, then from 1967 – 1971 for Sperry Rand as an electrical engineer for the Saturn V Apollo Missions, and from 1975 – 1990 for Black and Veach Engineering Company as a records manager before retiring. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, and the American Legion all in Abilene. On June 13, 1948 Walter was united in marriage to Dorothy Sawin in LaPrairie, Illinois. She passed away September 25, 2014. Walter is also preceded in death by his sister DoraDeane Lips. Jay Dee Siebert, age 74, of Manhattan, Kansas, died June 3, 2021, at the Good Shepherd Homecare and Hospice House in Manhattan. He was born January 20, 1947, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Waldo Peter and Minnie Martha (Regier) Siebert. Dr. Siebert blended a passion for science and education, a love of travel and an interest in agriculture and the environment into a research and teaching career. He made environmental science and agricultural sustainability accessible to an audience of students and farmers stretching from Fort Riley, Kansas to southern, central and west Africa. Jay graduated from high school in Hutchinson, earned a bachelor’s degree from Tabor College, a Master of Science in plant breeding and agronomy from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. in plant genetics from the University of Georgia. In between his graduate studies, he lived and worked in Brussels, Belgium, and in the country now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo. He and his wife Jabou moved with their family to Botswana and Senegal before returning to Kansas where he continued teaching for many years. Jay spent the last portion of this career in Nigeria teaching and researching Environmental Science. He retired to Manhattan in 2017. Jay loved to travel, spend time with his family and was an avid bird watcher. Survivors include his four children: Amiekole Siebert and her husband Douglas McQuery of New York, NY, Aisha Siebert and her husband Raul Salinas of Chicago, IL, Michael Siebert of Seattle, WA, and Christopher Siebert of Brooklyn, NY; one granddaughter Aida Salinas; and two siblings: Mary Siebert of Houston, TX, and Richard Siebert of Hutchinson, KS. Jay was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 17th in Hutchinson, Kansas. Please contact the funeral home for more information.
