Delpha Jean Nelson, age 92 of Blue Rapids, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at the Blue Valley Senior Living in Blue Rapids.

She was born on February 8, 1929 in Manhattan, the daughter of Herbert Otto and Blandina (Killman) Pfaff.  She grew up in the Winkler area and was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church.  She attended the Winkler Grade School and graduated from Randolph High School in 1947.  After high school she moved to Manhattan and worked as a secretary at the Riley County Public Works.

On February 17, 1952, she was united in marriage to Elmer “Junior” Nelson, Jr. at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winkler.  He preceded her in death on August 19, 2018.

Delpha and Junior moved to Swede Creek in 1953 after the Tuttle Creek Dam relocated them from that area.  They were longtime members of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.  She was a farm wife and loved raising baby calves.  She was a member of E.H.U. of Swede Creek and Winkler Willing Workers Club and worked the election polls in Swede Creek for several years. If there was anyone around the house at meal time they had to stay and eat and nobody complained because she was a great cook.

She is survived by her son, Roger Nelson and wife Penny of Randolph; her daughter-in-law, Patty Nelson of Manhattan; five grandchildren, Heather Nelson and husband Ross Olsen of Pueblo, Colorado, Garrett Nelson and fiancé Harlee Thompson of Manhattan, Jesse Nelson and wife Kelli of University Park, Stacy Wurtz and husband Brian of Randolph and Adam Nelson and wife Cassandra of Randolph and eleven great grandchildren, Will, Olivia, Lucy, Rielyn, Cord, Claire (Lil Del), Quincy, Brynlee, Watson, Layton and Kannan.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Larry Nelson and Ronnie Nelson; three brothers, Vernon Pfaff, Everett Pfaff and Dean Pfaff; one granddaughter, Ashley Nelson and two brothers-in-law, Paul Novak and Verlin Wieters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 5, 2021 at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Matthew Durance officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.  Music will be furnished by Kathie Otney.  Pallbearers will be Jesse Nelson, Adam Nelson, Garrett Nelson, Alan Nelson, Brian Wurtz and Jodie Reed.  Burial will be in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or Meadowlark Hospice and left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Jamie Lee Holloway, 45 of Solomon passed away Monday, July 26, 2021. He was born January 8, 1976 at Camp Pendleton, California the son of Charles and Susan (Rutz) Holloway. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1994. He later went on to Vo-Tech in Salina as a diesel mechanic.

 Jamie loved riding motorcycles and enjoyed hot rods and racing. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his friends and family. 

Jamie is survived by his parents, Charles and Sue Holloway. One brother, Brian and wife Dawn Holloway of Abilene. Two nephews, Tyler and Cooper Holloway. Two uncles, Bill Rutz and Mike and wife Ranada Rutz as well as numerous cousins and friends and his loving dog Daisy. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robert and Anna Holloway and maternal grandparents, Willis and Carol Rutz. One uncle, Robert Jr. Holloway and an aunt, Bobby Ann Brenton.

John K. Strickler, age 84, of Manhattan, died February 23, 2020, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. He was born August 14, 1935, in Kansas City Missouri, the son of Bert and Ruth (Kemper) Strickler. Strickler was a professor emeritus working with the Kansas State Forest Service at Kansas State University. In 1987 to 1989 he served as Special Assistant for Environment and Natural Resources to Governor Mike Hayden. During that time he worked with Governor Hayden to develop an executive order that created the cabinet-level Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. He also served as Acting Secretary of Wildlife and Parks while leading a national search for a permanent Secretary. Later he agreed to serve a similar role for Governor Bill Graves. During his time with Governor Hayden, Strickler worked as a liason with the Kansas Legislature to establish the first funding for the Kansas Water Plan. He provided leadership in addressing Kansas water issues with particular emphasis on the important role of riparian forests and wetlands in protecting water quality. Strickler was dedicated to the importance of environmental education and actively supported the efforts of the Kansas Association of Conservation and Environmental Education (KACEE). In 1999 Governor Graves announced establishment of the John K. Strickler Award for Environmental Education to be awarded annually by KACEE. He was a founding trustee of the Kansas Chapter of The Nature Conservancy established in 1989 and continued to serve on that board until his death. Most recently he was recognized by seven professional Kansas national resource societies as winner of the 2018 Kansas Conservation Champion Awards. He is survived by his wife, Joan, and two children John E. (Debbi) Andover, and Carole Hay (Chris) Wamego, one brother Robert, Kansas City, and seven granddaughters: Megan Strickler, Nikki, Bailey and Abbey Marcotte, Polly Wasinger, Hanna Hermann, Jayme Hay, and one great granddaughter Stella Hermann. Emma Mae Moller, 85, passed away Monday, July 26th, 2021. Emma was born in Kansas City, Missouri on October 15, 1935, a daughter of the late Gladys M. Knudson and Harvey M. Osborn. She worked as an Environmental Supervisor at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska for 24 years and at the Morris Co. Hospital in Environmental service in Council Grove, Kansas for 10 years. Survivors include her daughters, Angela Wilson and Kay Moller both of Manhattan, Kansas; sister, Neva Jean Longstreth, of Council Bluff, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Buck joined the U S Army August 1, 1958, he served in Vietnam and received the Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal w/V Device, 1 OLC, Vietnam Service Medal w/four Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Medal, First Class Meritorious Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm, Bronze Star Medal, w/V Device, 1OLC, Good Conduct Medal, Five Awards. Buck retired from the Army September 1, 1978. Following his retirement he worked for Steve's Auto Sales for a period of time as a car salesman. In 1982 he went to work for the Geary County Sheriff's Department as a Correction's Officer, he retired from there as Chief Jailer January 1, 2000. Buck was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and also a fan of any Texas sports team. He loved to hunt and fish. He was a 38 year proud member of the Fraternal Order of The Eagles Aerie 830. On February 2, 1965, Hutchinson, KS he married Glenda A. (Sutton) she preceded him in death April 12, 2010. Buck is survived by three children, Patty Irwin, Sara (Wayne) Hoffman, Jr. Glen Irwin, all of Junction City, KS and Michelle Gomena of Halifax, VA; his special friend, Cathy Bolte of Manhattan, KS; five grandchildren, Johnathan Hensley, Lillie Washburn, Hunter Arsenault, Hattie Hoffman all of Junction City, KS and Brian Gomena of Topeka, KS; three great-grandchildren; two nephews, Edward Hale of Dallas, TX and Rick Hale of New Brunfels, TX and a great niece Anna Hale-Whistler of Arlington, TX. Memorial donations are suggested to be given to the Junction City Animal Shelter. George was born April 23, 1940, in Cincinnati, OH the son of Joseph Henry and Lavina Marie Ahlers. George married Wilma Elaine Goertz on January 11, 1964, in Wabasha, MN. She passed away August 28, 2013. George and Wilma moved to Junction City in 1980 while George was stationed in the United States Army. He retired from the Unites States Army in 1981. While serving in the Army, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Expert (M-16 Rifle) Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Meritorious Service Medal. He later worked as a Deputy with the Geary County Sheriff's Department. He also worked as a Hall Monitor at Fort Riley Middle School. He is survived by one daughter, Dawn "Dee" Goudey and her husband Tom; one son, Bill Ahlers and his wife Cindy all of Junction City, KS; four grandchildren, Amanda Small and her husband Jake, Ashley Svaty and her husband James, Ariana and Chase Ahlers; one great-granddaughter, Addison Small; two brothers, Tom Ahlers and Joe Ahlers; two sisters, Vinie Krause and Char Katenkamp; a host of nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Wilma, three brothers and two sisters.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Adam Lee Samuelson, age 38 of Randolph, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.


He was born on March 18, 1983 in Wamego, the son of James “Sam” Darwin and Connie Sue (Orsborn) Samuelson.  He graduated from Rock Creek High School in 2001 and received a degree in Graphic Art and Design from Manhattan Area Technical College.

On April 18, 2021, he married Kerrie Ann Volpert.  She survives of the home.

Adam worked for Shilling Construction doing many different jobs.  He was a social butterfly and never knew a stranger.  He enjoyed collecting elephants and gaming.  He was a loving husband, father and son.



In addition to his wife Kerrie, he is survived by his parents, Sam and Connie Samuelson of Westmoreland; his brother, Nick Samuelson of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three step sons, Cian, Rylan and Damon; one grandmother, Norma Orsborn of Blue Rapids; a nephew, Shawn Samuelson; a niece, Jazmine Samuelson; one aunt, one uncle and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by three grandparents, Arno and Eleanor Samuelson and Marvin Orsborn.



Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Adam Lee Samuelson, age 38 of Randolph, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

In addition to his wife Kerrie, he is survived by his parents, Sam and Connie Samuelson of Westmoreland; his brother, Nick Samuelson of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three step sons, Cian, Rylan and Damon; one grandmother, Norma Orsborn of Blue Rapids; a nephew, Shawn Samuelson; a niece, Jazmine Samuelson; one aunt, one uncle and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by three grandparents, Arno and Eleanor Samuelson and Marvin Orsborn.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

Virginia Levier,&nbsp;age 98, of Manhattan, died July 26, 2021 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. Virginia was born on June 4, 1923 the daughter of Edwin and Sunshine (Strange) Brown in Blur Rapids, Kansas. She lived most of her life in Blue Rapids and graduated from Blue Rapids High School. She was united in marriage to William Lloyd Lillibridge in 1943. They had four children: Larry, Diane, Linda, and Mike. She was later divorced and married Charles Levier. Virginia and Charles later divorced. Virginia lived in Pasco, Washington for 14 years. She then lived in Manhattan to be closer to her mother and step-father. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Barbara Stuart and Phylis Beer, also her daughter Diane Stewart; and her beloved companion, Bill McCashland. Virginia is survived by her children, Larry, Linda, and Mike; also, her four grandchildren: Kim Elliot, Corey Stewart, Shannon Daily, and Brandon Daily; and her three great-grandchildren: Brooke, Matty and Ethan. At Virginia’s request there will be no services. She will be cremated. Virginia was a good mother and she loved her children, grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. He married Carol Lala on October 15, 1960. Jim worked for Garvey Grain, California Pellet Mill Co., Supersweet Feeds, Courtland Construction, Key Milling Co., and Fourth &amp; Pomeroy Associates. He retired in 1999 as principal owner of Key Feeds in Clay Center, Kansas.

  Jim and his wife Carol volunteered for International Executive Service Corp, where they spent six weeks in Egypt in 1991 and six weeks in Ukraine in 1994. He was active in the community and served on the Clay Center Development Board, President of the Clay Center Chamber of Commerce in 1987, and served 11 years on the City Council. Jim was on the Dean’s Advisory Council Kansas State Unitversity College of Ag, Milton S. Eisenhower Society Kansas State University, and a lifetime member of the KSU Alumni Association. He won the Outstanding Grain Science Graduate Award in 2010.  Jim was heavily involved in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served as  a Eucharistic Minister, Vestry, Reader, and the Altar Guild.  He is preceded in death by his parents and one son Steven Brond.

Dr. Kelvin “Tod” Kerstetter of Manhattan, KS passed away at the age of 58 on July 12 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. Tod battled pancreatic cancer valiantly for 22 months. Full of love for his family and passion for his music, he maintained his belief that he was going to live a long full life with and for his family. During this battle, he continued to teach clarinet at Kansas State University, served as treasurer for the International Clarinet Association, and created YouTube videos where he performed many of his clarinet arrangements including Bohemian Rhapsody (and joking with his children that since he had 81 followers he should sell “merch”). Be sure to look him up on YouTube and “follow” him. He’ll be laughing in heaven over that. Tod was born in 1963 in Hays, Kansas to Elizabeth (Edwards) and Rex Kerstetter. After Tod’s father earned his doctorate at Florida State University, his family moved from Tallahassee, Florida to Greenville, SC where Tod spent most of his childhood and young adulthood. Tod was an all-state clarinetist, was awarded the John Philip Sousa Award, and was valedictorian of his class at Berea High School. He earned a B.M. from Furman University (Greenville, SC), an M.M. from Indiana University, and a D.M.A. from the University of Georgia. Tod and his wife first met when Tod was playing saxophone on the street in Aspen, Colorado, to earn tips. A friend told them that they were both going to Indiana University the following fall, and Jackie thought to herself, “I’m going to pursue him at IU.” When at IU, Jackie had already decided after a week of friendship with Tod, that she was going to marry him. It took Tod a bit more time to figure that out, but he came to his senses and they were married in 1989. They spent the early years of their married life freelancing in orchestras near Greenville, SC and teaching part time at Furman University; they then attended University of Georgia for their doctoral work; moved to Bowling Green, KY where Tod had his first full-time position at Western Kentucky University; and then in 1999, they each were offered a tenure-track position in the music department at Kansas State University. Tod was a loving father, and he thought the world of his sons David (13) and Jordan (10). He shared his love of music, plants, and sports with his sons, and he enjoyed playing hot wheels and flying RC planes, helicopters and drones. Mostly, he shared his love of travel with his family, meticulously making vacation plans most summers. One of his favorite vacation destinations was Hawaii, where he spent many hours snorkeling, swimming and boogie boarding in the ocean, visiting parks and other sites, and enjoying Hawaiian culture. Tod is survived by his wife Jackie and their sons David and Jordan; by his brother Ted, wife Alicia, and child Bella (Madison, AL); his mother-in-law, Olga Fassler; and by Jackie’s siblings, Connie and family (Albuquerque, NM), Tom (Beijing, China), and Cathy and family (Bloomington, IL). He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Elizabeth and Rex; and by his father-in-law, Fred Fassler. Tod’s K-State family and students were very important to him. Jackie has found consolation in reading all of the notes from students and friends, and she would like to share these words written by one of his former students Rachel Palmberg. These words summarize Tod’s legacy of teaching. “Words can’t begin to describe what Tod meant to me at K-State, nor the weight of his passing. I am grateful to have gotten to know your family while I was in Manhattan; even a bit. Tod was the final deciding factor that brought me to KSU. I did a campus tour and was feeling overwhelmed before ending the day with a lesson with Tod. He made me feel warm and welcome straight away. He was one of the most genuine people I know. Even as a high school senior, I was drawn not only to his talent and knowledge, but to his kindness and empathy. ‘Tod made me feel seen and known as I navigated my early 20s. Even as it became more and more clear I wouldn’t pursue a career in music after graduation, he still encouraged me and supported me every step of the way. He valued his students as people, not just musicians. He was a father figure to so many in his decades as an educator, which deepens the weight of his loss. I am grateful not only for the short time I had with him, but also for the scores of other lives he touched. I believe God used Tod to influence a generation of young adults in the crucial time they were growing into who they would become. ‘His sudden passing is a severe injustice, but drops of his identity live on in your family, his colleagues, and his students. That is what I am choosing to celebrate between the tears.” Tod, we will miss you deeply, but are filled with joy that your legacy lives on through your family, friends, students, music recordings, and YouTube clips. Cornelle W. Estelle, 77, of Manhattan, passed away Wednesday, July 14th, at Via Christi Village. He was retired from the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant, serving during the Vietnam War. Nancy Maxine Henry-Perry, 75, of Manhattan, passed away Wednesday, July 21st, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House. She worked as a realtor with Coldwell Banker in Manhattan for more than 30 years. Nancy Maxine James was born in Clay Center, Kansas on October 13, 1945, the daughter of the late Mellis Albert James and Opal Maxine (Lilley) James. Nancy was married to Leland D. Henry on October 7, 1966 until his untimely death on June 29, 1985. On January 27, 1990 she was united in marriage to Charles H. Perry in Lawrence and he passed on June 29, 2010. Nancy graduated from Longford Rural High School in 1963 and was a lifelong realtor in Manhattan. She was a proud member of the First Assembly of God in Manhattan. Nancy had many hobbies including bowling, traveling, shopping, and garage sale hunting. She especially enjoyed playing Mexican dominos and eating Oreo cookies with her friends and family. As a good Samaritan, she would serve sloppy Joe sandwiches to the homeless as well as giving them rides to medical appointments. Nancy is survived by a daughter, Sonja (Dave) Hannington of Brewer, Maine; a son, Kevin (Amy) Henry, of Manhattan; a brother, Emmett (Sandy) James, of Beatrice, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Tyler Henry, Chelsey Henry, Mitchell Henry, Abigail Hannington, Sarah Hannington and one great-grandson, Greyson Henry. Richard Neal Herren, 80, of Alma, Kansas, died Saturday, July 24, 2021, at his home In Alma, Kansas.

Richard was born on April 9, 1941, in Independence, Missouri, the son of Lt. Colonel Wesley and Sarah Bollinger Herren. Like his father, Richard had a proud military career. Richard graduated Sylvan Hills High School in Sherwood Arkansas in 1959.

Richard served proudly in the United States Navy and then in the Airforce National Guard as an Inventory Manager Supervisor with a rank of Master Sergeant. He received numerous medals and ribbons during his duties in Viet Nam, Desert Storm and various state-side locations. Including - The Vietnam service medal, Air Force Achievement medal, Air Force outstanding unit award, Air Reserve Force Meritorious Medal, Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service medal with one bronze service star, Air Force longevity service award ribbon with two oak leaves, Service desert shield/storm, Cluster armed forces reserve medal, USAF nco pme graduate ribbon, Air Force training ribbon. Richard retired from the military after many years. Richard also worked for FEMA for a few years as well as the railroad.

Richard was a loving, reliable, good-natured, husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law. He loved his family and the time he spent with them. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 32, in Alma, KS and the Light of the World Christian Center in Topeka. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman, taking many fishing destination trips with his son Jim Herren and others. People say Richard could repair anything and was very good with his hands.

Richard married Sandra V Yount Knight in 1966 in Edwardsville, Kansas. They were later divorced. He then married Maurine Neal Post on April 17, 1981, in Topeka. She survives him at their home in Alma, KS.

Barbara Emma (Betty) Mundell, 82, of St. George, Kansas, died peacefully on Monday, July 26, 2021, at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp; Barbara was born on April 4, 1939, in Fulda, Germany, the daughter of Richard Kurt and Elizabeth (Weiherer) Eisfeld.

Barbara worked in production at the McCall Pattern Company for ten years and later in retail for Montgomery Wards, both in Manhattan, KS.&nbsp;

Barbara had many close friends which she treated like family, enjoying sharing time with them all. She was passionate about her relationship with friends and family, especially her grandchildren.&nbsp; Barbara loved to grow flowers and vegetables and preserve the harvests to share with family and friends. She enjoyed camping and especially loved fishing and could catch and clean fish like no other. Barbara was talented in crocheting and knitting wool blankets, hats, scarves, gloves and doll dresses.&nbsp;

Barbara married Robert Wayne Mundell on May 26, 1968, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salina, Kansas, he survives of the home.

Barbara is also survived by her son; Fred Mundell (Lorrie), Wamego; her granddaughter, Claire Elizabeth, Grants Pass, Oregon; grandson Matthew Ray Mundell, Lawrence, KS; two brothers, Germany. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and two brothers.

He served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee.  Rich’s Navy unit built runways in Guam and saw action in Vietnam.  He was proud of his country and his service to his country.  Rich was a life member of the VFW in Marion and enjoyed going to the American Legion in Hillsboro.  Rich’s faith was very important to him.  He was a long-time parishioner of Holy Family Parish in Marion.  Rich was nearly always the first person at church on Sunday morning, prayed the Rosary faithfully and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.

  Rich’s loving family includes his loving companion of 31 years Betty Medley of Hillsboro; children James (Heather) Schlehuber of Marion, Sherry Schlehuber of AL, Jeremy Schlehuber of Hillsboro, Denise (Chris) Kostelac of Shawnee, KS, Rick (Tricia) Medley of Valley Center and Terry Medley of Topeka;  grandchildren Elise, Gabriella, Magdalen, Isaac, Samuel and Katharine Schlehuber, Matthew and Josh Schlehuber, Jacob Schlehuber, Avery, Colby, Tasha Kostelac, Russell, Carol, and AJ Medley, Brooke Medley and Jake Medley; and his siblings Larry ( Joyce) Schlehuber of MO. and Anita Hancock of Marion.

Marie’s life began on August 12, 1925, in Vona, CO.  She was the daughter of Henry and Dora Zubrod.  She graduated from high school from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Stratton, CO.  Very early in life, Marie worked as a telephone switchboard operator before she was united in marriage to Daniel Navrat on September 22, 1947, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Stratton.  Marie was a faithful parishioner of the Holy Family Parish in Marion.  She volunteered teaching 2nd grade catechism at the church preparing children for first communion.  Marie led the weekly Rosary prayers for many years before Mass and enjoyed Altar Society.  She worked in the church kitchen preparing funeral dinners and always had a smile on her face.  Marie served her community as a member of the election board for several years and she was an avid quilter.

 Her greatest joy was her family which includes her children Donna (Robert) Cherry of Kingman, Ron (Deb) Navrat of McPherson, Daniel J. (Lisa) Navrat of Walton, Patricia Navrat of McPherson, and Machelle (Mike) Ratzloff of Marion; grandchildren Gary (Yolanda) Keen, Jessica Wells, Anjanette Montano, Melissa Chavez, Jason ( Celide) Navrat, Amber (Matt) Powers, Ashley ( Jonathan Graham) Ratzloff and Samantha ( Jordan Simmonds) Ratzloff; 14 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren. Marie Helena (Zubrod) Navrat - August 12, 1925-July 22, 2021 (age 95)

Eunice Ann Bretz Hunter, 90, long time resident of Council Grove, Ks passed into eternity July 26th, 2021 at Diversicare in Council Grove, KS with her daughters, Carla, Kathy, and Christy by her side.

She was born June 29, 1931 in Emporia, KS daughter of Vernon Dean &amp; Ruth Ann (Berger) Bretz. Eunice graduated from Council Grove High School and attended Business College. She married Calvin Carl Hunter on September 10th, 1949.

She had many occupations in Council Grove including secretarial work at Hunter Chevrolet, lifeguard and swim teacher of Red Cross swim lessons in Council Grove. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many dance recital costumes for Jill Fitzgerald Dance Studio. She was best known for working and then owning Bretz Shoe Store at 206 W. Main Council Grove, Ks. She was an avid promotor of small town businesses.

She was a member of the Council Grove Chamber of Commerce, Council Grove Christian Church, and Council Grove Country Club for many years. She was Ladies City Golf Champion in 1965. She belonged to and enjoyed several Bridge Clubs. She devoted many hours making quilts for her daughters and grandchildren.

Eunie was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Family was of utmost importance to her and she treasured her three daughters. She loved watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play ball and dance. This included 67 consecutive years of going to dance recitals. Eunie loved all sports, playing pitch, reading, and crossword puzzles. She will be sadly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Darlene and Donna, and brother Dean.

Eunie is survived by her daughters: Carla Pruitt and husband Don, of Victoria, KS, Kathy Litke and husband Darrell and Christine Ziegenhirt and husband Donnie, all of Council Grove; 9 grandchildren: Alycia Straight (Dane), Amanda Pruitt, Dara Fillmore (Jason), Dana Reddick (Bobby), Deanna Buttrey (Thomas), Dawn Palmquist (Lucas), Derek Ziegenhirt, Jacob Ziegenhirt, and Casey Cowdin (Troy). 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Shirley Hickman, and many nieces and nephews.

Eunice Ann Bretz Hunter, 90, long time resident of Council Grove, Ks passed into eternity July 26th, 2021 at Diversicare in Council Grove, KS with her daughters, Carla, Kathy, and Christy by her side.She was born June 29, 1931 in Emporia, KS daughter of Vernon Dean &amp; Ruth Ann (Berger) Bretz. Eunice graduated from Council Grove High School and attended Business College. She married Calvin Carl Hunter on September 10th, 1949.She had many occupations in Council Grove including secretarial work at Hunter Chevrolet, lifeguard and swim teacher of Red Cross swim lessons in Council Grove. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many dance recital costumes for Jill Fitzgerald Dance Studio. She was best known for working and then owning Bretz Shoe Store at 206 W. Main Council Grove, Ks. She was an avid promotor of small town businesses.She was a member of the Council Grove Chamber of Commerce, Council Grove Christian Church, and Council Grove Country Club for many years. She was Ladies City Golf Champion in 1965. She belonged to and enjoyed several Bridge Clubs. Larry R. Larson, 79, Junction City, KS. passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021 at Geary Community Hospital. Cremation has taken place per Mr. Larsons wish. Larry is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons, Kirk Larson (Brooke) of Mooresville, IN and Roderick Larson of Kansas City, MO; a daughter, Robyn Brumfield of Ft. Worth, TX; five grandchildren, Kinsey Larson, Josephine Larson, Ezra Brumfield, Taylor Larson and Eden Brumfield; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Larry attended rural schools and graduated from Dickinson County Community High School in Chapman, Kansas. He was a graduate of Ft. Hays State University where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, serving as Social Chairman and Commissary Steward along with being involved in numerous other extra curricular activities. While many farm parents in those days thought children were “cheaper by the dozen”, Larry’s parents discussed and thought that 8 children would be enough to help with the farm chores as almost everything that was produced on the farm was needed for food. Larry was a kind, obedient and cheerful son and brother who was always proud to talk about being a farm boy and his careers that followed. He started driving a Ford tractor at age 6 to help pick up hay bales and that was just the beginning of working their family farm and helping numerous neighbors. At age 16, Larry was employed for the State of Kansas Highway Department in Junction City where he worked for two summers. Following his graduation from High School, not yet 18, Larry walked into Wilson and Company Engineers and Architects in Salina, Kansas and asked to speak with the President of the company. He was obliged and started work there one year later doing drawings for the Saudi Arabian Government Highway project. Due to his performance there, he never had to ask for another professional job! As word traveled, Larry eventually moved to Waterloo, Iowa and taught Commercial Art at Hawkeye Institute of Technology for almost 30 years. Larry also had his own studio and did all aspects of Advertising Art and Design. He was devoted to his family and as his children became older he served as President of the Parent Teacher Organization. Larry often said his proudest moments were raising his family and watching his students become successful. Larry enjoyed fishing and was an avid bowler, bowling for 60 years with one perfect 300 game. Larry was added to the Bowling Hall of Fame. He was a junior bowling coach and got to meet Hall of Fame professional bowler, Dick Weber, for raising money for the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of America. Larry was an advisor for the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America and served on a number of charitable organizations and events. Larry was also proud to have served as a Scout Master for eight years. He loved working with young children. As you know, in those days only the Good Lord knew whether a child to be born was a boy or a girl. As Larry’s dad was working on the farm making noise in March, 1942, the Good Lord came to him and asked what kind of ears he wanted for his son. Because of the noise, his dad thought he said “What kind of beers do you want” to which he replied, “two big ones”. On June 30, 1942, with his mother 45 years old, Larry was born on the kitchen table in the old farm house with the help of a mid-wife, but there were complications. Dr. Butcher, who was the doctor in Wakefield came to the house and discussed with the mid-wife the situation. They could not determine whether the problems were related to his mother’s age, being born on the kitchen table or if it might be because of his “big ears”. After 2 months of careful treatment the Doctor told his mother that it looked like everything was going to be fine. His mother replied “Thank you Lord” to which Larry’s big ears heard that response. As he grew older, Larry began to read and research and found what his mother actually said was “Amen Lord.” Larry studied about a seminary student who was working on his Doctorate Degree. On his thesis he asked what the definition of Amen was and found that only about 30% of people who say Amen actually know what they are saying.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Earl James Wells, 85 years old, died July 25, 2021.&nbsp; He was born on August 30, 1935 in Longford, Kansas the son of Doyle and Velma (Livengood) Wells.&nbsp; Earl was raised in the Longford community.&nbsp; He served in the US Air Force for 23 years.&nbsp; Earl married Nancy Rodgers on October 2, 1971.&nbsp; After leaving the Air Force, they made their home in rural Clay County and Earl worked as a truck driver for several years, most of his time spent with Newell Truckline.&nbsp; Nancy preceded him in death on March 6, 1992.&nbsp; Earl was a member of the Longford Lions Club, V.F.W. and American Legion.&nbsp; He was also preceded in death by his parents and a son, George Wells.

Sandra Sue (Sandy) Chamberlin Stevens, age 78, Chapman, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021. She was born in Clay Center, Kansas, on December 20, 1942, the daughter of L.V. (Dick) and Rachel Helen Gibbs Chamberlin. She grew up in rural Dickinson County attending a country school (Wesley) and graduating from DCCHS. Sandra married Roy David (Dave) Stevens on November 1, 1959 at the Sutphen Mill Christian Church, rural Chapman, Kansas. Most of their married life was spent in the home Dave built in rural Dickinson County on Sandra’s parents’ farm. They had four children, Timothy, Debra, Scott, and Amy. Sandra was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, dearly loved by her family. Survivors include her son Timothy Stevens (Karen) of Woodbine, Maryland, daughter Debra Stevens of Junction City, Kansas, son Scott Stevens (Christy) of Abilene, Kansas, daughter Amy Wahl of Windsor, Colorado, and granddaughters Kelsey Stevens, Halee Wahl, and Peyton Wahl as well as seven, step-grandchildren and five, step-great-grandchildren. Sandra is also survived by her brothers Bill Chamberlin and wife Patsy and Craig Chamberlin and wife Vicky both of rural Chapman, Kansas as well as nieces and nephews. Her husband and parents preceded her in death. When her kids were little, Sandra stayed home, but she volunteered with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts as well as with Sunday school and bible school at the Chapman United Methodist Church. Later, she worked in the deli at West’s IGA, receptionist at VacuBlast, teacher aide at Rural Center Elementary and Chapman Elementary, site manager at the Chapman Senior Center, salesclerk at Steinhauser’s Gifts and Made in Kansas, and hostess/cashier at Barb’s Deli. She volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dickinson County and with the foster grandparent program at Kennedy Elementary School in Abilene where she was fondly known as “Grandma Sandy.” She was a “kid magnet.” Wherever she was, kids were always drawn to her. Sandra was a member of the Sutphen Mill Christian Church, Lakeside EEU, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Beta sorority, the Chapman Area Preservation Society (CAPS), and she served on the Chapman Public Library Board. She volunteered at the Abilene Public Library and Chapman Valley Manor. Her hobbies included card making, adult coloring, embroidery work, playing cards, and reading. She especially loved spending time with her family. She will be sadly missed by all. Per her wishes, cremation was chosen. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the Chapman United Methodist Church with Pastor Connie Wooldridge officiating. Sandra Sue (Sandy) Chamberlin Stevens

Bradley ‘Brad’ Willard Fenwick was born on March 17, 1955, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He died on July 22, 2021, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas from complications from colon cancer diagnosed in December 2014. Having received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and master’s degrees from Kansas State University, Dr. Fenwick completed a residency and received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis in 1985 focused on microbiology and immunology. Following a faculty position at the University of Florida, he was recruited by Kansas State University in 1987. During his tenure at Kansas State, he built a world-class research program in infectious diseases. While at Kansas State he held numerous academic leadership and administrative positions at the department level, chaired an interdisciplinary graduate program, and served as associate dean of graduate education and president of the Faculty Senate. In 2001 Brad was selected as the only veterinarian to be appointed as the Chief Scientist for the Competitive Research Programs and the National Research Initiative (NRI) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His time as Chief Science Advisor was during 9-11 – a time when the foundation for replacing the Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center were laid ensuring the construction, opening, and operation of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan. He left Kansas State in 2003 to become the Vice President for Research at Virginia Tech and President of Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties. At the time, he was part of the administrative team that had to address the issues related to the shooting that resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals. He then became Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in 2007. In 2011 he became a Jefferson Science Fellow, Senior Science and Technology Advisor with the U.S. Department of State – Office of Economic Policy, East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He led the development of the terms of reference and chaired APEC’s Policy Partnership on Food Security as well as the Policy Partnership of Science, Technology &amp; Innovation. In 2012 he was recruited by Elsevier, Inc. (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), the world’s largest publisher of over 2,000 science and technology journals and dozens of databases to be their Senior Vice President for Global Strategic Alliances, a position created specifically to capitalize on his talents. His work to foster non-commercial strategic alliances between research universities and centers, foundations and government research agencies, and related associations and stakeholders allowed partners to be successful well beyond their singular efforts. Deciding he had accomplished what he intended, he left Elsevier in 2020 to join Taylor &amp; Francis as their Senior Vice President for Open Science and Innovation. Taylor &amp; Francis is an international company originating in England that publishes books and academic journals. Over the course of his academic and professional career, Brad secured over $30 million in competitive research funding from numerous governmental and private sources; published over 150 refereed and industry/professional publications and reports (H factor – 42); supervised 35 graduate students and post-doctoral students; presented over 200 invited and keynote presentations throughout the world; held five United States patents; and with his spouse was the owner of a veterinary technology start-up company. He received numerous awards and honors including the Beecham Award for Research Excellence, the Yarborough Medicine Award, Sigma Xi Outstanding Scientist and Service Awards, the Kansas Veterinary Service Award, and the U.C. Davis Distinguished Alumni Award. He was one of a very select group who held fellow status with both the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Council on Education (ACE), and was a Distinguished Fellow with the National Academies of Practice. He served on and chaired numerous professional and national organizations and committees including those with the National Academies of Science, the National Research Council, and the Association of Public Land-Grant Universities. He worked with research and policy groups such as Research America, Council on Governmental Relations, Association of Academic Health Centers, University Industry Development Partnership, Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and many more. Brad was a scientist, first and foremost. He believed in the importance of science and research. He believed that science is what moves our country forward in positive ways. As a result, it was easy for him to assume the position of chair of Science Counts, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that works to enhance public awareness of and support for scientific research, in 2020. He truly believed there is an urgent need to strengthen our nation’s commitment to science by increasing the resources that fuel scientific activity in order to fully realize science’s immense potential to do good. He also thought that if he lived long enough the science would catch up his cancer diagnosis and he would be cured knowing the odds were against him. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and spouse of 44-years, Debbie Nuss, of Manhattan, Kansas; his son, Benjamin Fenwick (Jillian Oberfield) of Arlington, Virginia; and daughter, Emily Fenwick (Tom Ashby) of Golden, Colorado. He is also survived by his adoring granddaughter, Sadie Fenwick of Arlington, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his father, Willard Fenwick and stepfather, Phil Bloom; survived by his mother, Martha Bloom of Manhattan, Kansas and his brother John Fenwick (Sheena Boyd) of San Francisco, California. His commitment to providing for his family knew no bounds. He wanted only the best for his children, Ben and Emily, and did all that he could to ensure their futures were secure. It was reassuring to him that they are both so well-established and well-respected in their respective careers - a testament to the advice and guidance he provided to them. He also was comforted by the fact that they had found people to spend the rest of their lives with who made them happy and whole. As a family, we are extremely grateful for the time we had with him the past six and a half years. Time we were told we would not have because the odds were stacked against him. During that time, he got to see granddaughter Sadie born and to walk Emily down the aisle on her wedding day. Our last time together as an entire family was December 2019 (just prior to the start of the pandemic) when we spent the holidays in Colorado - a time we all cherish. Bradley ‘Brad’ Willard Fenwick was born on March 17, 1955, in Hutchinson, Kansas. He died on July 22, 2021, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas from complications from colon cancer diagnosed in December 2014. Having received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and master’s degrees from Kansas State University, Dr. Fenwick completed a residency and received a Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis in 1985 focused on microbiology and immunology. Following a faculty position at the University of Florida, he was recruited by Kansas State University in 1987. During his tenure at Kansas State, he built a world-class research program in infectious diseases. While at Kansas State he held numerous academic leadership and administrative positions at the department level, chaired an interdisciplinary graduate program, and served as associate dean of graduate education and president of the Faculty Senate. In 2001 Brad was selected as the only veterinarian to be appointed as the Chief Scientist for the Competitive Research Programs and the National Research Initiative (NRI) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His time as Chief Science Advisor was during 9-11 – a time when the foundation for replacing the Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center were laid ensuring the construction, opening, and operation of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan. He left Kansas State in 2003 to become the Vice President for Research at Virginia Tech and President of Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties. At the time, he was part of the administrative team that had to address the issues related to the shooting that resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals. He then became Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville in 2007. In 2011 he became a Jefferson Science Fellow, Senior Science and Technology Advisor with the U.S. Department of State – Office of Economic Policy, East Asian and Pacific Affairs. He led the development of the terms of reference and chaired APEC’s Policy Partnership on Food Security as well as the Policy Partnership of Science, Technology &amp; Innovation. In 2012 he was recruited by Elsevier, Inc. (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), the world’s largest publisher of over 2,000 science and technology journals and dozens of databases to be their Senior Vice President for Global Strategic Alliances, a position created specifically to capitalize on his talents. His work to foster non-commercial strategic alliances between research universities and centers, foundations and government research agencies, and related associations and stakeholders allowed partners to be successful well beyond their singular efforts. Deciding he had accomplished what he intended, he left Elsevier in 2020 to join Taylor &amp; Francis as their Senior Vice President for Open Science and Innovation. Taylor &amp; Francis is an international company originating in England that publishes books and academic journals. Over the course of his academic and professional career, Brad secured over $30 million in competitive research funding from numerous governmental and private sources; published over 150 refereed and industry/professional publications and reports (H factor – 42); supervised 35 graduate students and post-doctoral students; presented over 200 invited and keynote presentations throughout the world; held five United States patents; and with his spouse was the owner of a veterinary technology start-up company. Don served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. After his service time, Donald lived in Manhattan. He worked for Westar Energy for 38 years as a lineman and then later as a line foreman before he retired. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union for 65 years. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post 17, and the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan. Don loved coaching his children’s little league baseball teams, dancing, playing cards, and golfing with friends. He was married to Wilma Irene Gros, who preceded him in death. Don was later married to Betty Lou Phalen who also preceded him in death. He was also was preceded in death by his children, Elizabeth Richey and Daniel Winter; and his sisters, Rita Ellison and Roberta O’Dell. Don is survived by his children: John Winter (Janet) of Waterloo, NY, Gary Winter of Corpus Christi, TX, David Winter (Julie) of Manhattan, KS, Patricia Jones of Lawrence, KS, Teresa Wilson (Michael) of Lone Star, KS, and James Winter of Olathe, KS, and his daughter-in-law, Anita Winter of Overland Park, KS, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
