Clayton R. Olson, 83, of Junction City, died Monday, October 12, 2020 at Abilene Memorial Hospital in Abilene. Clayton was born August 26, 1937 in Council Grove, the son of Martin and Effie (Smith) Olson. He grew up in Burdick and graduated from Diamond Valley High School in the Class of 1955. He later attended Brown-Mackie Business School in Salina and graduated in 1956. Clayton moved to Junction City and started working at the Commissary on Ft. Riley and later became the Commissary Manager/Commissary Officer. Under his leadership, the Ft. Riley Commissary was awarded the "Best Commissary" by the Department of The Army three different times. Clayton retired after 39 years. Clayton was a member of the First Baptist Church in Junction City, the Burdick Lodge #429 A..F&amp;A.M. (now part of the Emporia, Ks. Lodge), and The M:.W:. Grand Lodge A.F. &amp; A.M. of Kansas. He was awarded his 50 Year Membership Award from the Grand Lodge of Kansas in January 2009. Clayton married Celia Quisenberry on March 21, 1971 in Junction City. She survives of the home. He is also survived by a son, Michael R. Olson, Overland Park. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Olson on May 11, 2015. It was Clayton's wish to be cremated. Byrdene Ann Hall 64, died Saturday September 19, 2020, in Conroe Texas.

Byrdene was born on March 15, 1956, to Clyde and Arely Howard, in San Bernardino California.&nbsp; She attended schools in Southern California until 1969, when the family returned to Abilene Kansas. Her first marriage gave her two beautiful children, Brandy and Beau. In 1982 she married Bill Hall and later gave birth to her youngest daughter, Bobbi.

Byrdene spent the majority of her adult life raising her children and working for the family business. She enjoyed working for her father at the convenience stores that he owned. She worked as a cashier and loved to interact with the public.&nbsp; Byrdene loved to laugh and have a good time. She was one of the most accepted and loving people you would ever meet. Byrdene was a music lover, but especially Elvis. Her children will tell you growing up in her house there was a wall of Jesus and a wall of Elvis. There first family vacation was to Graceland. Raising three children on her own she took on the role of both parents and did not take the job lightly. She was an amazing study partner, motivator, and leader. Her children were her life.

In 2002 she obtained her CNA license, and moved into the health care field. She provided home health and private care for elderly as well as those with special needs.&nbsp; She welcomed her first grandchild in the summer of 2002, and he was followed by four more grandchildren soon after.&nbsp; She enjoyed being a grandmother more than anything in the world.

In 2009 her daughter moved to Texas and Byrdene spent the next ten years traveling between Kansas and Texas. She spent her later years traveling with her children and grandchildren. She loved the water, whether it was the beach, lake, or the pool. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow. She supported them in all they did. Many days and nights were spent on sidelines and in bleachers.

She was the second of four children. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her older brother Thomas Howard. She is survived by her two sisters, Melissa Zelniker and husband Steve Zelniker of Abilene. Denise Howard of Abilene. Two daughters, Brandy Parson and husband Stan Parson of Abilene. Bobbi Middleton and husband Scott Middleton, of Montgomery TX. One son, Beau Boston and wife Jodi Boston of Abilene. One raised like her own, Amanda Hall of Abilene. Her grandchildren; Cameron, Kennidee, and Clyde Middleton. Michael, Adam, Kayla, Trista, and Aron Parson. A niece and multiple nephews, as well as many loving friends. She was a mother to many, and will be missed by all that knew her.

Visitation for Byrdene will be from 6:00–7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 22, 2020 at the Danner Funeral Home in Abilene.&nbsp; Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2020 at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene with Father Randall Weber as Celebrant. Mary Frances Richards, 91 passed away October 10, 2020 at Abilene Place. She was born July 23, 1929. She married November 11, 1949 to William Richard. He preceded her in death in 2001. Lowell, Michigan was their home for most of their married life. Mary truly enjoyed her years with the Lowell area schools. Her heart was always with her church, playing the piano, bowling and jigsaw puzzles were her favorite pastimes. 

Surviving are daughter, Shelley (Alan) Carroll of Abilene, Son, Roy Richard of Lowell. Sister, Madelyn Olson of Madison, Wisconsin and brother Ivan (Lois) Dremann of Ohio, Illinois. Beside 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren in Michigan. She will be missed by her granddaughters, Jill (Clay) Becker and Shelley (Scott) Rosebrook. Mary’s great-grandchildren are Heather and Haley Harcrow, Joshua Angst, Mitchell, Matthew and Thomas Rosebrook. Great-great-grandchildren: Audiel, Giovanni , Brizia, Eisley, and Vera.

Arvid Floyd Manges, 78, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died Monday, October 12, 2020, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene, Kansas. &nbsp; He was a life-long resident of the area.

Floyd was born on December 6, 1941, in rural Frankfort, Kansas, the son of David and Annie Heath Manges. &nbsp; He attended local schools and graduated from Westmoreland High School. &nbsp;Floyd then joined the United States Navy during the Viet Nam War. &nbsp;He served as an electrician repairing the catapults on the aircraft carrier USS Hancock.&nbsp;

Floyd was a meat cutter and worked for several grocery stores in Topeka, Manhattan and Westmoreland. &nbsp;He owned the Manges Grocery Store in Westmoreland from 1985 until 1991. &nbsp;He cut meat at Ray’s Apple Market for many years and retired from there in 2014.

Floyd was a member of the local VFW and the Meat Cutter’s Union, and Westmoreland Chamber of Commerce. &nbsp;He also enjoyed square dancing and belonged to the Westy Squares. &nbsp;He also belonged to a bowling league, and enjoyed playing cards, and was a member of the parish council at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church. &nbsp;His two passions were hunting and woodworking. &nbsp;He was known for being able to build anything out of wood from decks to clocks and much more.

Floyd married Natha Sutton on February 8, 1964, in Alameda, California. &nbsp;She survives at their home. &nbsp;Early in their marriage, Floyd and Natha took in her younger three siblings to add to their growing family.

Floyd is also survived by his children; Peggy Manges (Anthony Jones), Nashville, Tennessee, Timothy Manges (Liesa), Silver Lake, and Brenda Panovic (Radovan), Junction City; his grandchildren, Ashley McDaris, Katriya Manges, and Harrison Heike; his brothers, Bill Manges, Riley and Frank Manges (Joy), Olsburg. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Lloyd Manges; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Stanley Sutton, Frances Sutton, John Sutton and Mary Wilson, and a granddaughter, Lauralai Panovic.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 16, 2020, at St. Columbkille’s Catholic in Blaine, Kansas. Father Anthony Chendumallli will be the Celebrant. &nbsp;Floyd will lie-in-state beginning at 4:00 p.m., Thursday, at the church hall, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. &nbsp;There will be a Celebration of Life at 7:00 p.m.. She then married Ronald Lee Dies on March 1, 1984 in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Her loving family includes her husband, Ron Sr. of Lehigh; sons, Derek Lofton, David Lofton (Angel) of Hillsboro, Ronald Dies Jr. (Denaye) of Lehigh, and William Dies (Robin) of Hillsboro; brother, John Elliott (Barbara) of Independence, Missouri; 6 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Glendle Lofton and a sister, Nancy Story. Ruthann passed away peacefully on Monday, October 12, 2020 at the age of 77 years old.

Tammy's life began on August 11, 1960 in Topeka, Kansas.  She was the daughter of Richard L. and Barbara (Davis) Reitz.  She attended college at Cloud County Community College.  Tammy worked as a pellet packer for the Hodgdon Powder Company for 18 years.  She was involved in Job's Daughters and Girl Scouting as a youngster.  Tammy was more than just a family person; she was passionate about her family.  Her world revolved around them and she adored her children and grandchildren.  Tammy loved to cook, and she loved to tent camp, as long as it was with her family. She also especially loved Halloween.

  She is survived by her mother Barbara Reitz; children Travis (Mindy) Reitz, Dustin (Janna) Smith, Nichole Ryff-Pitts, Joshua (Carrie) Ryff, Matthew (Tara) Ryff and Makayla Forichette; 20 grandchildren; her siblings Rob ( Julie) Reitz, Ron (Brenda) Reitz, Crissy (Chad) Cook, Cory ( Jenn) Reitz and Heidi (Billy) Bush and multiple nieces and nephews.  

Tammy passed away on October 12, 2020 at Herington Municipal Hospital.  She is preceded in death by her father Richard.  A private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Bill was born June 17, 1939, in Festus, MO, the son of Lilburn Norval and Elva Frances (Payne) Kausler. Bill married Alberteen Suiter July 10, 1957 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Junction City, KS. She passed away July 8, 2003. On September 15, 2006, he married Mildred Umscheid in Manhattan, KS. Mildred survives of the home in Junction City. Bill and Alberteen had three children. One son, Billy Kausler (Tina) of Junction City, KS; two daughters, Natalie Fleming (Jon) of Junction City, KS and Penny Rice (Kevin) of Topeka, KS. Other survivors include two step daughters, Sharon Sorbello of Las Vegas, NV and Eileen Sommerville of Olympia, WA; one brother, Jerry Kausler (Shirley) of Memphis, TN; six grandchildren, Crystal Kausler, Melissa Broyles, Matthew Fessman (Michelle), Amber Cook (Ray), Samantha Kramer (Josh) and Megan Wood (Devon); fifteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Pete Kausler and four sisters, Faye Russell, Norma Primo, Charlotte Kausler and Sue Boyd. Bill worked as a civil servant in finance at Fort Riley for many years. Bill and Mildred enjoyed traveling the United States and sight seeing for fourteen years. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors and working in his yard. He was a member of the JC Baptist Church. A highlight for Bill was knowing all of his grandchildren accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Other survivors include two step daughters, Sharon Sorbello of Las Vegas, NV and Eileen Sommerville of Olympia, WA; one brother, Jerry Kausler (Shirley) of Memphis, TN; six grandchildren, Crystal Kausler, Melissa Broyles, Matthew Fessman (Michelle), Amber Cook (Ray), Samantha Kramer (Josh) and Megan Wood (Devon); fifteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Pete Kausler and four sisters, Faye Russell, Norma Primo, Charlotte Kausler and Sue Boyd. Bill worked as a civil servant in finance at Fort Riley for many years. Bill and Mildred enjoyed traveling the United States and sight seeing for fourteen years. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors and working in his yard. He was a member of the JC Baptist Church. A highlight for Bill was knowing all of his grandchildren accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Elgene Duane Sylvester, 88, of Wamego, passed away&nbsp;on October 9, 2020.&nbsp;&nbsp; Words that come to mind remembering Elgene include generous, adventurous, creative, and wonderful.&nbsp; He was lovingly referred to as the “think tank”.&nbsp; He would go out of his way, above and beyond expectation, to help someone in need.&nbsp;

On July 4, 1932, Elgene was born to Edward and Lillian (Nauerth) Sylvester in Riley Kansas.&nbsp; He was always proud to have family surround him in special celebrations on his birthday and would joke about so many others sharing in celebrating with July 4th&nbsp;events.&nbsp; Growing up in the Riley area, Elgene attended Magic School south of Riley for elementary school years until it burned down, then Riley grade school and graduated from Riley High School in&nbsp;1950.&nbsp; He always had fun stories telling about the years he attended Magic school.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;On December 20, 1953 he married Nola N. Purvis in Riley Kansas.&nbsp; He was in the US Armed Forces Stationed in Germany for 2 years.&nbsp; When he returned home, he farmed in Riley Kansas until the Fort Riley reservation took over the farmland and homestead.&nbsp; Elgene &amp; Nola moved their family to Wamego, KS where he continued to farm and was actively involved in the United Methodist Church.&nbsp; He had many innovative ideas that he pursued in farming as well as building, fixing and remodeling houses within the family.&nbsp;&nbsp; He farmed with his middle son in the Wamego area numerous years.&nbsp; Elgene was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Gladys Jahnke and Marge Friederich and 1 brother Lyle Sylvester.&nbsp; He was also proceeded in death by his beloved wife of 66 year just 3 weeks prior to his passing.&nbsp;

Vesta Sargent, age 69, of Manhattan, died Sunday October 11, 2020 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. She was born on June 8, 1951 in Manhattan, she was the daughter of Hugh and Edna (Watson) Sargent. Vesta grew up in the Riley area and graduated with the class of 1969 from Riley County High School. Vesta worked for Wal-Mart for many years. She traveled with Wal-Mart and helped to open many new stores. Vesta loved the arts and worked behind the scenes on many theatre productions at The Purple Masque and Manhattan Arts Center. When she was younger, she loved to do twirling during her school years. Everyone that Vesta met was a friend. She had a great personality and laugh that will be remembered forever. In addition, for traveling for work she also loved to travel on vacations. She went to many places throughout the country during her life. On February 3, 2001, Vesta was united in marriage to Denis E. Conley. He preceded her in death on November 7, 2014. She is survived by her sister, Beverly Machin, of Louisville, KY, sisters-in-law Esther Helfferich, of Manhattan, Shaundra Droge, Gardner, KS, and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends. Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday October 17, 2020 at the Riley Cemetery in Riley. David Clair Schoenrock, AKA “Sh**head”, age 72, passed away after his battle with metastatic cancer at his home in Formoso, Kansas on October 7, 2020. He has reunited with his son, Harley, smoking Blue Dreams, raising hell in heaven. David was born on November 25, 1947 in Odell, Nebraska, the son of Emil and Genevieve (Cuthbert) Schoenrock. He and his family lived in the Keats area and David attended Riley County Schools and graduated from Riley County High School in 1965. He was drafted into the United States Army and served as a medic in the Vietnam War. After his Honorable Discharge he returned to Manhattan. He attended MATC in the Building Trades Program and also for his certificated to be an EMT. He worked as an EMT for Riley and Pottawatomie Counties. Also, he worked as a motorcycle mechanic at City Cycle Sales, and as a material handler at McCall Pattern Company. David loved to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycles. He attended the motorcycle rally in Sturgis many times during his life. David was married to Nancy Ebert; they were blessed with two children, Harley and Ida. David and Nancy later divorced. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son Harley on September 27, 2018; and his sister Dorthea White. David is survived by his daughter, Ida Dreitz (Reid) of Wichita, Kansas; his grandchildren, Ava and Cera, and also his many other extended family and good friends. Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday October 17, 2020 at the St. George Cemetery in St. George, Kansas. Stella Marie Swisher passed away on October 11, 2020 at Diversicare of Council Grove. She was born October 23, 1924 to Emory and LuLu Brownell in Wilsey, Kansas.

On March 25, 1944, she married Clyde Swisher in Wichita, KS and made their home in Wilsey, farming on the family farmstead. They had three children: Phillip, Jeffery and Cindy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stella was a member of the Wilsey Christian Church.&nbsp; She was in several different card clubs. Her enjoyment came from working in her flower and vegetable gardens.&nbsp; She canned 100’s of quarts of vegetables each year for her family. Stella was an excellent seamstress and quilter, as well as an exceptional cook.&nbsp; She worked at White Memorial Camp, Council Grove school cafeteria and Dolly Madison. After Clyde retired in 1972, they moved to Council Grove. Stella loved her family; spending time with her children and grandchildren brought her the most joy.

Stella is preceded in death by her parents; husband Clyde; son Phillip Swisher; granddaughter Jessica Swisher; great-grandson William Swisher; brothers: Harold and Lester Brownell; sisters: Irene Roberts, Harriette Daines, Hazel Blaylock and Frances Ferguson.

She is survived by her daughter Cindy Obee and husband Don of Emporia and son Jeff Swisher, of McPherson; grandchildren: John Swisher, Nathon Daniels, Jason Swisher, Joseph Swisher, Colby Hayes and step-grandson Jeff Parker;&nbsp;11 great-grandchildren; brother Eldon Brownell, of Biggs, CA; and sisters Helen Hewitt, of Norwich and Shirley Belew, of Mulvane.

Geneva Justine Hobbs earned her wings on October 10, 2020. Geneva was born on her family farm Northeast of Glen Elder November 3, 1930 to John Irvin Rarick and Ruth Irene (Fobes) Rarick. Geneva was the oldest of 3. She is preceded in death by her father John Rarick and her mother Ruth Rarick, her sisters Bonnie George and Peggy Rarick and her husband Arthur Hobbs. Geneva attended Prairie Gem #106 in Mitchell Co. Graduated from Glen Elder High School in 1948. After attending KW4 one summer she began teaching at age 17. Her teaching career extended for 43 years.&nbsp; Seven years in rural schools in Mitchell and Lincoln Co. Five years teaching 4th grade in Enterprise and 31 years teacing 1st grade at Grandview Plaza. Geneva and Art were united in marriage on July 11, 1953 at the Glen Elder Christian Church, the church in which she accepted the Lord and was baptized in. The Hobbs lived one year in Hunter, and one year in Lincoln then moved to what became their family farm near Enterprise, Kansas on August 1, 1955. On this farm the raised 4 children: Randy (Connie) Hobbs of Ogden, Kansas; Kaye (Herb) Burgett of Chapman, Kansas; Ron (Debbie) Hobbs of Pittsburg, Kansas and Rose (Rich) Knight Ft. Wayne, Indiana. 

4-H was important to Geneva she had been a member of west Beloit Club for 10 years and then a leader of Swenson Creek Rustlers for 19 years. In later years she enjoyed watching her grandkids showing and enjoying 4-H. The family attended the First Baptist Church a mile from their home. Geneva taught Sunday School classes when her children were younger and for many years she was involved with Bible School. Geneva attended summer schools from 1949 to 1962. Then she attended more summer and night classes and got her M.S. from K.S.U. in 1983. For 35 years she was a student as well as a teacher. The Hobbs family enjoyed traveling and Geneva continued traveling after she retired. Geneva also enjoyed seeing and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services for Geneva will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery east of Enterprise. Calling hours will be from 9AM until 5PM on Friday, October 16 at Danner Funeral Home. On this farm the raised 4 children: Randy (Connie) Hobbs of Ogden, Kansas; Kaye (Herb) Burgett of Chapman, Kansas; Ron (Debbie) Hobbs of Pittsburg, Kansas and Rose (Rich) Knight Ft. Wayne, Indiana. 4-H was important to Geneva she had been a member of west Beloit Club for 10 years and then a leader of Swenson Creek Rustlers for 19 years. In later years she enjoyed watching her grandkids showing and enjoying 4-H. The family attended the First Baptist Church a mile from their home. Geneva taught Sunday School classes when her children were younger and for many years she was involved with Bible School. Geneva attended summer schools from 1949 to 1962. Then she attended more summer and night classes and got her M.S. from K.S.U. in 1983. For 35 years she was a student as well as a teacher. The Hobbs family enjoyed traveling and Geneva continued traveling after she retired. Geneva also enjoyed seeing and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services for Geneva will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery east of Enterprise. James H. Guilfoyle, Abilene, Kansas died on October 8, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mona Guilfoyle, his 3 sons, Mark (Kathy), Stephen (Mary) and David as well as his three grandchildren, Elyse, Matthew and Ellen and one sister, Jo Anne Casetta.

Jim was born September 1, 1929 to Matthew and Rhea Guilfoyle in Abilene, Kansas. He was a store manager for Duckwall's in Ellsworth, Kansas. He also owned and operated the Dairy Queen with his wife. He was a Korean War Veteran having served in the Air Force. Jim was a F-84 fighter pilot and flew 56 missions. One of his Air Force highlights was chasing a UFO over Arizona in his jet. He never did catch it! When back on the ground he was known to drive like he was flying.

Lillian B. Byrd, age 93, of Manhattan, died Wednesday October 7, 2020 at her home in Manhattan. She was born on April 16, 1927 in Manhattan, the daughter of Edward and Nora (Johnson) Rogers. On July 27, 1943 in Manhattan, Lillian was united in marriage to Wayde Byrd. He preceded her in death on December 29, 2013. Lillian worked at KSU in the enrollment office. He was born on February 17, 1939, in Chapman, the son of Gordon F. and Wilma I. (Coulson) Londeen. Jon graduated from Chapman High School (DCCHS) in 1957. He then attended Kansas State University and earned his degree in Business Administration in 1961. He received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant from ROTC at Kansas State, and took his basic training at Fort Benning, GA. He married Kathlyn Sue Boles on August 2, 1960, at the Chapman United Methodist Church. They were stationed at Fort Lewis, WA, until his discharge from active duty in 1963 at the rank of 1st Lt. He then served 5 years in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Captain. In the fall of 1963, they returned to Chapman where he and his parents purchased Lorson Hardware, and combined with the furniture store that his father owned to become Londeen Hardware and Furniture. The family owned and operated the hardware and furniture store, and after his father passed away in 1976, he took over the operation of the Londeen Funeral Chapel that was started by his father. Jon served as Mayor and on the Chapman City Council for several terms, and was very proud that Indian Hill Golf Course was built during one of his terms as mayor. Dusty Carl Good - October 11, 1981-October 8, 2020 (age 38)

Sylvia's life began on July 24, 1924 in Pilsen.  She was the daughter of John and Victoria (Franta) Svitak.  Sylvia attended grade school in Pilsen and graduated from Lincolnville High School.  Not long after graduation Sylvia went to work at the Pilsen State Bank, followed by the Lincolnville State Bank and the Ramona State Bank.   Sylvia worked as a bookkeeper for the Marion Sale Barn and later the Herington Sale Barn.  She was good with numbers and had a quick wit which she used on her family and in business too.  Sylvia was united in marriage to Paul S. Bezdek on November 5, 1945 and enjoyed many years of marriage, raising two daughters, cultivating their garden, keeping a dairy, very involved on the farm and living a good life.  Sylvia was a parishioner of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Pilsen, and St. Anne's Altar Society.  She loved to Polka dance, a big part of her life as Paul was a drummer in a Polka band for many years.  Sylvia loved to attend the dances at the Pilsen Community Center.  The one thing she disliked weeds and could swing a mean corn knife. She took pride in keeping the farmyard mowed.

   Sylvia's greatest joy was her family which includes her daughters Paulette Holub of Lost Springs and Marcia (Dan) Falen of Hope; grandson Greg (Pam) Holub of Lost Springs; great grandchildren Gentri Holub, Kelsi (Marshall) Hopkins, Zachari Slayden. Jerami Slayden, Amanda Cooper, and Tony Creekmore; and ten great great grandchildren.  Sylvia passed away on Friday October 9, 2020 at St. Luke's Living Center.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, brothers Paul and George Svitak and son in law Gerald Holub.

Sylvia Anna (Svitak) Bezdek - July 24, 1924-October 9, 2020 (age 96)

He set the first stake in the prairie. That’s what my dad always told people about Circle E Feedlot. The feedlot was his life for six decades. Work for my dad was something of a religion. He poured himself into every project he undertook. Many times I’ve seen him come up with an idea, draw it out, go to the shop and make it, and then install it. Beyond these more creative endeavors, he liked “getting the job done.” He knew how to do a lot things: welding, plumbing, carpentry, heavy equipment. The list goes on. Much of this work was dangerous. He didn’t always escape those dangers, but injury or illness did not stop him. Even after he supposedly “retired” in the early 2000s, he still “consulted” at the feedlot, now named Windmill Ranch. He was working there as of several weeks ago, before his final decline began.

Anyone from Potwin and surrounding areas knows that he worked tirelessly for the community as well from the early 1980s onward. I found this somewhat of a surprise at first. Early in his life, dad had never been outgoing, but in 1981 (as I recall) the feedlot changed hands. We had been living on land the feedlot owned, and in a matter of a couple weeks, my parents were cast out of the country and into the metropolis of Potwin. I figured dad would hate it, but Potwin became another project. He got himself elected to city council in short order, and then he became the mayor. He’s been in that job for thirty-three years. Beyond that, he joined the Lions Club. Bit of a shocker there. But of course he threw himself into that as well, eventually becoming a district governor in the late 90s. Then there was Kansas Pride, Plant a Row, and who knows what else.

Work and community occupied much of his time, but fishing took up the rest. And for him, fishing was work. He loved crappie fishing and limb lining for channel and flathead. If all else failed, he’d catch a bunch of tiny bluegill. Anything to “stretch the line.” Of course he could not just pursue the sport; he also started up a custom crappie jig business. In the 1970s, he operated a fish farm for several years on top of all the work at the feedlot. He also enjoyed other outdoor stuff: camping, gardening, and hunting (early in life).

Dad grew up rural, Mennonite, and poor. Much of his life went to overcoming that. I think he probably wished he had more children, but my parents could not have them. I was it. But he gave me all the time he had. The same goes for my mom. He loved her more than anything, and her passing in 2015 knocked him down in a way he could not fully beat. He’s with her now, probably organizing some new project.

Dean’s life began on April 1, 1938, the son of Alfred and Alma (Boese) Schmidt near Galva, Kansas. He married Vera June Unruh on April 22, 1956 at Eden Mennonite Church in Burns, Kansas. They enjoyed almost 59 years together before her passing in March of 2015.

Dean worked most of his adult life at Circle E Feedlot near Potwin, retiring as Operations Manager. He served as the mayor of Potwin for 33 years. He enjoyed memberships with the Lions Club, Kansas PRIDE, Plant a Row for the Hungry, and numerous governing boards in Butler County.

His loving family includes his son and his wife, Jim Schmidt and Andrea Smalley of Nora, Illinois; grandchildren, Mike Banghart (Holly) and Andrew Banghart; great-granddaughter, Clarrisa Banghart; brothers, Clinton Schmidt (Kathleen) of Brainerd, Kansas and Alfred “Toby” Schmidt, Jr. (Shirley) of Whitewater, Kansas; sisters, Helen Russell and Carrie Gutscher both of Newton, Kansas, Esther “Jeannie” Koehn of Lamar, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera; and a brother in childhood, Warren. Dean passed away peacefully on Friday, October 9, 2020, at the age of 82 years old.

His family will gather with friends on Tuesday, October 13, from 6-8 p.m. at Lamb Funeral Home, 120 S. Main, Whitewater. There will be a private family graveside. On Wednesday, October 14, at 4:30 p.m., the family would like to invite the community to a memorial gathering at the outdoor Lions Club shelter at 201 N. Miller, Potwin, Kansas for fingerfood and fellowship.

Kathy’s life began on October 30, 1953 in Hillsboro, KS.  She was the daughter of Frederick and Anna (Frantz) Beisel. Kathy attended OCCK life skills.

  Her family includes siblings Gene Beisel of El Reno, OK; Margie (Kenny) Nienstedt of Marion, KS; Yvonna (Art) Smith of Phoenix, AZ; Rosemary Deines of Herington, KS; Marilyn Smith of Springdale, AR; Carolyn Fizer of Salina, KS; She was preceded  in death by her parents, Frederick and Anna Beisel and her brother Don Beisel. Kathy passed away on October 8, 2020 at Herington Municipal Hospital.

Billie Jo Rivera, 84, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Stoneybrook in Manhattan, KS surrounded by her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10 a.m. Saturday, October 17, 2020, at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Gnanasekar Kulandai officiating. Burial will follow the service at St. Mary's Cemetery. A visitation will take place at 9 a.m. at the church prior to the service with a rosary recited at 9:30 a.m. Billie Jo was born November 16, 1935, the daughter of William f. and Wilma Ione (Emmert) Guyle. Billie Jo has resided in Junction City, KS since 1940 having moved here from Sturgis, SD. Billie Jo worked at Fort Riley for many years in the finance department and the Quarter Master Laundry She was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church where she was active with Circle Four. She was active with the Earl C. Gromley American Legion Post #45 Auxiliary and the former American Legion Post #207 Auxiliary in Ogden, KS where she served as president of both auxiliaries numerous times. She also served as the Fourth District President two times. Billie Jo belonged to the Women's International Bowling Congress for many years and volunteered with the Geary Community Hospital Auxiliary. Billie Jo married Jose' Luis Rivera-Rios November 22, 1955 he preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons; Jose' Rivera and his wife Alicia of Oak Forest, IL, (Wm.) John Rivera and his wife Jean of Herington, KS and Jesse Rivera and his wife Melissa of Junction City, KS; two daughters, María Hodge and her husband Kelly of Junction City, KS and Jodean Tieyah and her husband Ted of Junction City, KS; one sister, Mary Lou Fair of Abilene, KS; sixteen grandchildren, thirty one great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Walter Guyle and one grandson.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Randy D. Knudson, 63, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2020 at Via Christi Rehabilitation Center in Manhattan, KS. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, October 15, 2020, at the Dwight Cemetery. A visitation and reception will be held 6-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at the Brown Real Estate and Auction House 2323 N. Jackson Street in Junction City. Memorial contributions are suggested to the organization of the donor's choice c/o Johnson Funeral Home. Randy was born February 21, 1957, to Paul and Virginia (Arnett) Knudson in Junction City where he lived his entire life. He followed his fathers footsteps and worked at Geary County for forty years, and retired in 2017 as an Assistant Road and Bridge Supervisor. Many people would remember him from the years he worked at "The Devils Tail" and Browns Auction House. Randy was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Virginia (Arnett) Knudson. Randy is survived by his three children. Brittany Tuter (Lee) of Kansas City, MO, Mallory Knudson (Justise Campbell) of Arlington, TX and Gage Knudson of Alhambra, CA, three grandchildren, Ella and Ace Campbell and Lincoln Tuter, who he loved dearly, brother, Mike (Diana) Knudson of Abilene, KS; and sister Patricia Rondash of Topeka, KS along with a host of nieces and nephews. He was married to Julie Hess-Knudson, later divorced but still remained friends over the years. Randy graduated from Junction City High School in 1975 and participated and competed in football and wrestling. He was a Junction City Blue Jay til the very end. Randy was a cheerleader for his children. He was a dance/softball/football/basketball/wrestling dad. He was always there to cheer for his children and never missed a event. He coached softball and was part of the Dickinson County Softball Association and coached wrestling for the Geary County Grapplers. His proudest moments was being able to coach his son and to follow his legacy as a wrestler. He will always be remembered for his smile, laughter and encouraging words to all kids not just his own.

She was a graduate of Clyde High School. She married Kenneth Salsbury on February 28, 1952. They were blessed with 59 years of marriage until he passed away on June 4, 2011. Elaine worked for Sunflower Bank for many years retiring in 2000 as the assistant treasurer. She was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church where she was active with Circle II. Elaine and her husband Kenneth were very active members of the Eagle's Lodge in Junction City. Survivors include two sons, Michael Salsbury and his wife Tammie of Junction City, KS, Mark Salsbury and his wife Debra of Rossville, KS; two daughters, Karen Connell and her husband Kevin of Junction City, KS, Julie Charlton and her husband Michael of Ball Ground, GA; eight grandchildren, Loren Connell, Cassie Wayne, Brett Salsbury, Matthew Salsbury, Patrick Salsbury, Kelsey Charlton, Andrew Charlton, Mallory Charlton; five great-grandchildren, MaKaila Connell, Jayveon Thomas, Carson Salsbury, Kaycee Salsbury and Ethan Salsbury; three brothers, Danny, Dennis and Tom; three sisters, Judy, Rena and Ann. SFC (Retired) James Edward Marsh, 70, of Junction City, KS, passed away, Monday October 5, 2020 at Stormont Vail in Topeka Kansas. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with military honors. Mr. Marsh will lie in state 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at the Johnson Funeral Home 203 N. Washington Street Junction City, KS. Memorial donations are suggested to be given to the organization of the donor's choice. James was born on April 16, 1950, in Mariemont, Ohio the son of George and Retha (Dean) Marsh.&nbsp;&nbsp;He married Gwendolyn Koons on April 10, 1971.

James spent 25 years in the United States military until he retired in 1997. He served in the United States Air Force and the United States Army. During his career he was stationed at Lackland AFB in TX, Sheppard AFB in TX, Rickenbacker Ohio, Fort Leonard Wood MO, Fort Benning GA (twice including for ANCOC), Fort Chafee AR, Korea, Fort Ben Harrison, Defiance OH where he served as recruiter, Berlin Germany, and Fort Riley KS (4 times) until he retired from the home of the Big Red ONE. No mission to difficult no sacrifice to great! Duty First! He was very proud of his military career and loved all of his military brothers and sisters. I will always place the mission first, I will never accept defeat, I will never quit, I will never leave a fallen comrade. A hero never dies. James loved to fish, hunt and he was an avid collector of all things frogs. He truly loved his family. He loved all his dogs, Snuggles, Muffin, Bailey, Baby Girl, and Missy. He was preceded in death by his father George Marsh, mother Retha Marsh, three brothers Carl, Greg, and Jeff Marsh.

He is survived by his wife Gwendolyn (Koons) Marsh of the home in Junction City KS. James and Gwen were married 49 years and she was the love of his life. They were truly the best of friends. Other survivors include his daughter Honey (Melanie) and husband Arthur Bonjour of Berkeley Springs WV, son Risk Marsh of Junction City KS, grandchildren: PFC Christopher Bonjour of Fort Huachuca AZ, Liberty Bonjour of Berkley Springs WV, Jameson Marsh of Drake ND, Jasmine Boes of Bowling Green KY, and great granddaughter Melah Kulhman of Bowling Green KY. Other survivors include numerous relatives and military brothers and sisters.&nbsp;&nbsp;
