

Michael Oppenlander, 70, of Junction City, KS, passed away September 12, 2020. Johnson Funeral Home of Junction City is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.

He will be placed at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Fort Riley, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, KS, at a later date.

Michael was born on October 19, 1949, in Junction City, Kansas, to Ernest and Joyce (Cogdil) Oppenlander. He grew up in the Junction City area and after high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and honorably served for over 7 years. He traveled to many duty stations domestic and abroad, but ultimately came back home to Junction City, Kansas. Michael earned many awards and achievements to include but are not limited to: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one OLC, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Mast, RVN M.U.C Gallantry Cross Medal, Rifle Sharpshooter, and Good Conduct Medal.

Michael was a private but caring uncle, beloved brother, and loyal friend.

Michael is survived by his loving family: two nieces Christy Lee (Dave Hill) Smelly of Junction City, KS and Kim Christina Tarr; three great-nephews Bruce Shannon Broome Jr., Shannon Michael Smelly Jr., and Brandon Tarr; one great-niece Nikki Tarr; four great-great-nieces Breanna Broome, Madison Broome, Kayden Wilson, and Bellarose Broome; one great-great nephew Owen Broome; and a host of loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his four brothers Ernest August Jr., Leland LeRoy, Gary Lee, and Robert Eugene Oppenlander, and his sister Judith Anne Oppenlander, and one great-nephew Bradley Broome.

Richard Dean Roepke, 81, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, September 26, 2020. He was the son of Helen Irene (Eikenhorst) Roepke and Vernon Phillip Roepke and was born October 18, 1938 in Manhattan Kansas. Dick was a lifelong Manhattan resident and graduated from Manhattan High School in 1957. He attended Kansas State University and joined the IBEW Local 226 Apprentice Program to become a licensed electrician. He was the outstanding apprentice for his local and second in the state of Kansas when he completed his apprenticeship. He worked for various building companies until he retired at age 55. Dick spent many years as an active member of the Manhattan Elks Lodge where he was an officer and is a member of American Legion Post 17 in Manhattan.

While attending youth group in seventh grade at First Methodist Church, Dick spotted a young girl that caught his eye. He always told his family that he knew right away that this was the girl that he wanted to marry, and on October 1, 1961, he married Susan Ellen Schrenk. She survives.

Dick and Sue shared a rich and full life together. They were best friends and enjoyed many adventures and in 1998 when Sue retired, they sold all their worldly possessions and embarked on 13 years of living full time in a motorhome and fulfilling a life-long dream of travels returning to Manhattan in 2012. Dick bought his first boat at age eighteen and camping with both families were a part of most weekends. They were avid KSU athletic fans and became season ticket holders in 1968, when the new football stadium was built. They also held season tickets for men’s basketball and spent many happy years attending games. They could often be found attending Manhattan High School sporting events and Dick, along with his brother and father, spent many happy decades bowling on a team together.

Dick never met a stranger and was happiest when hosting gatherings that brought together his friends and family. He had a knack for storytelling and a laugh that filled a room.

Dick is survived by one brother, Duane Eugene Roepke of Casa Grande, AZ, and two sisters, Marilyn Glee (Roepke) Davidson of Westminster CO and Patricia Sue (Roepke) Pruett of Topeka, KS, along with two nephews and six nieces and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. A celebration of life is being planned for a later date.

Leo Dwight Burgman, age 95 of Leonardville, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020 at his residence.

He was born on July 30, 1925, the son of Oscar Emanuel and Anna Edna (Daniels) Burgman.  He graduated from Randolph High School and then served in the United States Coast Guard.  Leo had the distinct honor in 2018 to travel to Washington D.C. on the Honor Flight #63 from Kansas.

On September 3, 1951, he married Rose Marie Esslinger.  She preceded him in death in 2003.  He later married Bonita Leah Sprecker on August 28, 2005.  She preceded him in death in 2015.

Leo was a farmer and loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events.  He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Leonardville Lions Club and was a former board member of the Leonardville City Library.  He coached and umpired softball games, enjoyed gardening and watching KU sports and the Kansas City Royals.

He is survived by two sons, John Burgman and Sandra of San Antonio, Texas and David Burgman and Jane of Leonardville; three daughters, Janet Munoz &amp; Steve of Topeka, Shirley Vandahl and Vernon of Manhattan and Teresa Hopper and Garth of Leonardville; three sisters, Judy Springer of Hanover, Sharon Harding of Leonardville and Sandra Rightmeier of Randolph; nine grandchildren, Jenny Racette (Brian), Matt Vandahl, Heather Poore (Craig), Amber Hopper, Kenny Hopper (Audrianna), Jada Burgman, Brock Burgman, Derek Burgman and Brandon Burgman and four great grandchildren, Tyler Racette, Zac Racette, Addison Poore and Zane Poore.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John Burgman, Harold “Sprug” Burgman and Val “Ferd” Burgman and three sisters, Delores Gillespie, JoAnn Fluharty and Shirley Duensing.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2020 at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Don Zimmerman as Celebrant and Fr. Merlin Kiefer as Co-Celebrant.  Respect calls may be made all day Thursday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Lily M. Martin, 91, passed away on September 29, 2020, in Abilene, Kansas. She was born September 24, 1929, in Galena, Kansas, the daughter of G.M. and Rose Sigler Armstrong. She attended the Galena Schools and graduated in 1947, valedictorian of her class. On November 23, 1947, she was married to Paul J. Martin in Galena, Kansas, and they were the parents of a son, Stan, and daughter, Paula. She had been a resident of Abilene since 1948 when she and her husband moved to Abilene where he was employed by the Rasher Funeral Home. In 1958, they purchased the funeral home, and she then became an assistant funeral director for the Martin Funeral Home until retiring in 1988. Always impeccably dressed, it made perfect sense when she opened a women’s clothing store, The Fashionmaker, in 1969, which she operated until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Abilene, Past President of Chapter GY, P.E.O., and Past Matron of Abilene Chapter #111 O.E.S.

She was preceded in death by her son, Stan, in 1999; her parents; and two sisters, Rev. Janet Sevier Gilbreath in 1988 and Marjorie DeSpain in 2005.

She is survived by her husband; her daughter, Paula Martin, and her husband, Kurt Falkenstien, of Lawrence; her daughter-in-law, Victoria Martin, of Longmont, Colorado; four grandchildren, Jack Martin (Sarah) of Seattle, Washington; Ty Martin (Jill) of Longmont, Colorado; Jessica Lindfors (Jordan) of Browns Summit, North Carolina; and Kate Martin Falkenstien (Rich Boltizar) of Boise, Idaho; as well as four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Glen V. Womochil, 87, of Abilene passed away Friday, September 25, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born February 8,1933 in Elmo Ks The son of Howard and Vera (Westover) Womochil.

He attended the local school districts and graduated from Chapman High School. He served his country In United States Army.

On July 31, 1953 he was united in marriage to Beverly Chrisco in Enterprise Ks. In 1970 He started his own company call Glen’s Janitorial services owning and operating it for 45 years.

Glen is survived by his loving wife Beverly of the home. Two sons Glenn of Abilene, Vincent of Salina a Nephew Howard and wife Jamie of Abilene. Grandchildren Brandon, Kellen, Rylie all of Salina, Joel of Marion . A Niece Allison Nephews Tracyn and Shane. One brother Larry of Detroit. He was proceeded in death by his parents, siblings: Lyle, Gerald, Treva Schneider, Tyila Tyson, Tracy: Daughter-in-law, Carla and a Niece Tayla Womochil.

Joseph “Joe Bobby” Boller, age 79, passed away on Thursday September 24, 2020 at his daughter’s residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on May 3, 1941 in Manhattan, Kansas the son of Charles and Ruth (Harold) Boller. He was a tireless worker in the construction field, lastly with Parker Hannifin of Manhattan.

On August 24, 1963, he was united in marriage to Roseann Woodyard in Manhattan. Two children were born to this union: Michael and Cheri. They later divorced, but remained friends.

Joe loved to live life to the fullest and bringing happiness to everyone he encountered. He loved being the center of attention by getting you to laugh hysterically with his stories. He enjoyed traveling, playing games and taking care of his collections. Above all, he loved every minute he was able to spend with his children, grandchildren, great-grandson and all of his family and friends.

Survivors include his son: Michael Boller and his wife Susan of Manhattan and their daughters: Maddie and Hayden Boller; his daughter: Cheri Blaise of St. George and her children: Colton Magnuson and Mickenzie (Jacob) Blaise and great-grandson: Kason Blaise. He is also survived by his loving companion: Irene LaCharite along with many other family and friends.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday October 2, 2020 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas. Private Graveside Services will be held at a later date in the Sunset Cemetery.

Richard H. Middleton, 63 of Carlton passed away peacefully surrounded by family Thursday, September 24, 2020.

 He was born August 17, 1957 in Plymouth, Indiana, the son of F.L and Eva (Judkins) Middleton. He grew up in the Batesville, Arkansas area, attended the local school where he was a defensive tackle in football and received his GED. He later joined the United States Marine Corp. On October 22, 1988 he was united in marriage to Cindy Hosie in Abilene, Kansas. She survives of the home. Richard was the Senior Pastor at the Calvary Full Gospel Church in Abilene where he pastured for 20 years. He also drove a truck for 18 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending quality time with his family. He loved serving the Lord and being with his church family. His hobby was repairing vehicles. He belonged to The Men of Valor of Navarre, Ks.

 Richard is survived by his loving wife Cindy of 31 years. Daughters: Danielle Middleton (Eddie); Amanda Owens (Bruce); Elizabeth Gentet (Bryan). Sons: Richard Middleton (Tammy) and Daniel Middleton (Marcella). His mother, Eva Lois Judkins, fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Brothers: Bill Middleton, Michael Judkins and Joe Cox. Sisters: Vernell Ballard, Terecia Judkins, Frankie Rice and Ann Middleton. He was preceded in death by his father, F.L. Middleton, Sisters: Pam Hitchcock, Barabra Neldon, Donna Parker and Dorthy Stockburger Brothers: Delbert Middleton and Richard Everett Middleton and infant granddaughter.

Richard H. Middleton, 63 of Carlton passed away peacefully surrounded by family Thursday, September 24, 2020. He was born August 17, 1957 in Plymouth, Indiana, the son of F.L and Eva (Judkins) Middleton. He grew up in the Batesville, Arkansas area, attended the local school where he was a defensive tackle in football and received his GED. He later joined the United States Marine Corp. On October 22, 1988 he was united in marriage to Cindy Hosie in Abilene, Kansas. She survives of the home. Richard was the Senior Pastor at the Calvary Full Gospel Church in Abilene where he pastured for 20 years. He also drove a truck for 18 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending quality time with his family. He loved serving the Lord and being with his church family. His hobby was repairing vehicles. He belonged to The Men of Valor of Navarre, Ks. Richard is survived by his loving wife Cindy of 31 years. Daughters: Danielle Middleton (Eddie); Amanda Owens (Bruce); Elizabeth Gentet (Bryan). Sons: Richard Middleton (Tammy) and Daniel Middleton (Marcella). His mother, Eva Lois Judkins, fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Brothers: Bill Middleton, Michael Judkins and Joe Cox. Sisters: Vernell Ballard, Terecia Judkins, Frankie Rice and Ann Middleton. He was preceded in death by his father, F.L. On September 21, 2020, Marlene Kay Sedillos (Johnson), passed away into God’s grace peacefully at her home in Manhattan. She was the daughter of Aylesworth Clyde Johnson and Evelyn Lorraine Johnson (Kimble), sister of Carolyn Sue Braaten (Johnson), Charlene May Brownson (Johnson), Jimmy John Johnson, and Amy Lorraine Johnson. Marlene was the mother of Phillip James Sedillos and Sandra Kay Sedillos; grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of one.

Marlene had a marriage of 20 years to Raymond Adam Sedillos (deceased).

Along the way she was very accomplished in her educational pursuits, up to and including a doctorate degree in Adult Education from Kansas State. She was passionate about her education, and thrived on helping others in their lives, particularly her family. Marlene worked 13 years at Barton Community College and finished her career at Manhattan Area Technical College, having worked there for 14 years. She instructed students in effective writing and communication skills. In life Marlene touched the lives of all fortunate enough to have met or known her. She will be greatly missed by all. Words can not describe the experiences, efforts, and selflessness of Marlene, God rest her soul.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:00p.m. Tuesday September 29, 2020 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Ada Belle Herbic, 80, of Alma, Kansas, died Friday, September 25, 2020, at her home. &nbsp;She was a life-long resident of the area.

Belle was born on September 19, 1940, in rural Paxico, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Ella Martens Mathies. &nbsp;She attended local schools and graduated in 1959 from Paxico High School.

For twenty years, Belle owned and operated Herbic Liquor Store in Alma. &nbsp;She also owned, for several years, the Alma Bakery. &nbsp;In her earlier years, she had worked at Alma Cheese, Flint Hills Foods, and the Knotty Pine Cafe.

Belle was an exceptional quilter. &nbsp;She also loved to cook and was known for her pies, and enjoyed making Halloween costumes.

Belle married Vernon Charles Herbic on April 26, 1963, in McFarland in a double wedding with her twin sister, Nelle. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on October 23, 2014.

Belle is survived by her son, Darrin Herbic, of Alma; her sisters, Mary Ashworth, Wamego and Nyla Mathies, Manhattan; her sisters-in-law, Jean Mathies, Joyce Mathies, and brother-in-law, Bob Meseke, all of Alma; and numerous nieces and nephews and many honorary adopted family and friends. &nbsp;She was also preceded in death by her parents; and her siblings, Leon Mathies, Lola Ringel, Agnes Ringel, Fred Mathies, Mavis Erikson, Donald Mathies, Doris Mathies, and Nelle Meseke.

Mildred Dorothy Kunze, age 88 of Leonardville, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

She was born on December 7, 1931 in Palmer, Kansas, the daughter of Alvin Christopher Carl Killman and Clara Dorothea (Dierking) Killman.  She graduated from Linn High School.

On April 10, 1955 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Palmer, she married Val Jene Kunze.  He preceded her in death in 2007.

For nearly 30 years, Mildred was employed by Citizens State/UMB Bank in Manhattan, while simultaneously working as a farm wife and mother.  She worked hard her entire life and one of her favorite sayings to her daughters was “mind over matter.”  She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, playing Scrabble, crossword puzzles, gardening and bird watching.

Despite being diagnosed with ALS in February of this year, Mildred dealt with the effects of the disease with strength and dignity.  While in hospice care the last few months of life, she enjoyed weekend card games with her girls.

She is survived by three daughters, Marlene Kunze Dolan and Frank of Manhattan, Diane Huffman of Olathe and Jill Reynard and Jay of Riley; two grandchildren, Rachael Peterson and Jared Reynard; one brother, Wilbert Killman and Leann of Clay Center; one sister, Lorene Ohlde of Snohomish, Washington and one son-in-law, Jay Peterson of Leonardville.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Kunze Peterson in 2019; a brother, Victor Killman and a sister, Vera Lecuyer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 28, 2020 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Clay Center with Rev. Paul Tessaro officiating.  Respect calls may be made from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley.  Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.

Donna is survived by sisters Iris Rouse of Clay Center, Beverly (Rex) Steward of Topeka and Shirley Bristol of Portland, OR.&nbsp; Daughter-in-law Janet Carlson, grandchildren Saralyn Szyndlar and Kyle (Courtney) Carlson, and great-grandchildren Malina and Jakub Szyndlar.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Dale Pettet, sister Barbra Michel, son Everell (Rick) Carlson Jr. and infant daughter Christine Marie.

Donna was married to Everell Carlson Sr. in 1953 and later divorced.

She was raised in Clay Center, KS and graduated from Clay Center Community High School.&nbsp; She lived most of her life in Kansas except for the 20 year period she was in Austin, TX to live near her sister, whom she loved to travel with.&nbsp; She returned home to Kansas in 2009.

Donna was an amazing knitter and artist, completing a multitude of paintings and acrylic figurines in her lifetime.&nbsp; She made sure no holiday went by without sending a handmade card to her grandchildren.&nbsp; Her skills in the kitchen kept all visitors well fed, especially with sweets.

Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in her memory, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in her daughter’s memory or the Tammy Walker Cancer Center in her son’s memory.

Kenneth J. Miller 94, passed away September 22, 2020. He was born October 30, 1925 to Gwen H. and Louise M. (Raymond) Miller in Greensburg, KS. He grew up in Minneola and Meade, KS,moving to Greensburg, KS his senior year in High School, graduating in 1943. He was active in the Boy Scouts earning his Eagle Scout aware with two palm branches in 1936. He enlisted in the Marine Corp September 1943 at the age of 17. After High School he was deployed to California where he was a member of the Marine Raiders prior to the group being dismantled during WWII. The members of the Raiders were dispersed to other units and Ken was transferred to the newly formed Co A, 1st Battalion, 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division. He landed on Iwo Jima on February 19, 1945. Ken was wounded March 2, 1945 for which he was awarded the Pearl Heart. He was discharged December 1945 at the rank of Corporal. After discharge from the Marines, he attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS, where he played football and basketball, graduating in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He earned his Masters Degree in Education in 1971 through Emporia State University.

He married Sally Elliott in 1950 and to this union were born four children: Kenneth Michael, Brenda Jo, Kelly Eugene, and Claudia Rae. He taught Industrial Arts and Drafting at the High School level and was football, basketball, and track coach. During his teaching career, he taught &amp; coached at Coats, Sylvia, Inman, Kingman and finally Solomon, KS. He loved teaching and coaching impacting the lives of many young men and women during his 37 years in education.

Ken married Kaylene Liston Riffel in 1979. After his retirement, they lived in Granby, Co where he built their dream home. He enjoyed the mountains and skiing. They remained in Colorado 21 years, returning to Chapman, KS 11 yrs ago. He is survived by his wife, Kaylene of the home, children, Mike (Carrie) Miller of Hutchinson, KS, Brenda Moorman of Tigard, OR, Kelly (Raylene) Miller of Clearwater, KS, Claudia (Larry) Nelson of New Cambria, KS, step-son, Brian Riffel of Lenexa, KS, nine grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren and 5 step-great grandchildren, his sister, Marty Koch of Dublin, OH, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Sally Walker, parents, and two brothers.

Visitation on Sunday, September 27 at Martin Becker Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene from 9:00 am to 5:00pm. Pearly’s life began on December 28, 1924, the daughter of Dent and Mary (Sparks) Watson in Mossville, Arkansas. She married Arnold Edgmon on December 22, 1940, also in Mossville. She worked at Dole Packing Plant making the bacon! Pearl enjoyed quilting and was a member of the East Side Christian Union Church in Springdale, Arkansas until moving to Whitewater in 2002.

She worked at Dole Packing Plant making the bacon! Linda enjoyed coaching and playing softball.&nbsp; Dan and she spent countless hours and miles traveling to many places including Brookville, Eudora, El Dorado, Iowa, Kentucky, and even Hawaii to watch their grandchildren’s competitions and activities.&nbsp;

Ronald E. "Ron" Parks, 56, Junction City, KS, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka, KS. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will take place at a later date.

Ronald was born July 21, 1964, in Junction City, KS the son of John W. and Mary L. (Price) Parks. He has lived in Junction City his entire life.

Ronald worked for Kansas State University working for their grounds and maintenance department. Ron graduated from Chapman High School with the class of 1983. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending a lot of time outdoors and working with his garden. He shared a lot of garden vegetables with family and friends.

Ronald is survived by his mother Mary L. Parks of Junction City, KS; two sisters, Susanne Altwegg and her husband Steve of Chapman, KS and Jaylene Thurlow and her husband Robert of Wakefied, KS; six nieces and their families.

He was preceded in death by his father John W. Parks.

Beverlee Patsy (Stevens) Gfeller, 96, of Chapman, KS, was called to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at Chapman Valley Manor. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at St. John's Evangelical Cemetery. Pastor Maria Foerschler will officiate. B. Patsy (Stevens) Gfeller was born May 11, 1924, Marion, KS. She was the second daughter to Gerald A. and Grace V. (Kuhn) Stevens.

Patsy had many interests. She joined The Order of Eastern Star along with her sister in 1953 and held many offices of Chaplain. Ruth, Assoc. Matron of Treasurer for a total of 14 years. She received her 50 year Pin and Certificate with her sister in 2007. She had joined Daughters of the American Revolution in 1979 and received pin and certificate in 2004 for 25 years of membership.

She was a graduate of Junction City High School, with the class of 1942, and upon graduation from high school she was first employed by the Chamber of Commerce, then the City Bus Company, where she did Secretarial Work and Bookkeeping for a number of years. She was also employed by A.K. Bader, Architect for two years and at the Provost Marshall's Office at Fort Riley one winter.

Patsy and her sister Elaine had a dance team, and danced publicly during their grade school and high school days.

She had studied Commercial Art and Creative Writing for two years each. She had a fondness for Poetry and had many of her poems published. She had received a beautiful Crystal Trophy of Recognition from The International Society of Poets in July of 2006.

She was baptized in the First Christian Church of Junction City in 1933 and transferred her membership to St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church upon marriage to Frank. They retired to Wakefield for fifteen years and she attended the First Christian Church then joined the Madura Congregational Church in 2001.

In 2005 Patsy moved to Valley View Senior Living and while living in Junction City, she attended First Christian Church and Zion United Church of Christ.

In May of 2010, Patsy moved to Chapman Valley Manor.

Patsy married Frank W. Gfeller on March 27, 1943. The celebrated their 60th Anniversary in March 2003. Patsy and Frank were parents of one son, Bradley W. Gfeller who passed away quite unexpectedly February 5, 2005 just six weeks to the day after Frank had died.

Patsy was also preceded in death by her parents, her beloved sister, Elaine Pechin Leonard, nieces, Sharon Pechin, Sandy Pechin Baze, cousins, Patricia Lael Ross of Everett, WA and Dr. Stevens Byron Acker, M.D. Wichita, KS.

She is survived by nephew, Greg Pechin, grand niece Stephanie Pechin Griffin (Matt) and their two sons, Garrett and Connor of Topeka, KS, cousins Graham Stevens, Junction City, Judith Stanley, Scottsdale, AZ and Kathleen Ritter Yenni of Wakefield, KS.

Sharon Marie Purvis, 78, of Manhattan KS passed away at home on Wednesday, September 9th, 2020.

Born in Madison, KS in 1942, Sharon was the daughter of Zella Martin and Thomas Baysinger. Growing up on a Kansas farm, Sharon would eventually attend Emporia State and Kansas State University receiving a degree in Elementary Education. While in school, Sharon spent her summers working in the kitchen of Rock Springs Ranch where she met and fell in love with another KSU student, Leonard Purvis. The couple would marry in a small ceremony on June 2, 1963 in the Rock Springs Ranch Chapel.

Starting her teaching career at Westmoreland Elementary, and moved on to several Manhattan schools, Sharon found her teaching home at Northview Elementary for 25 years, retiring in 2004. Sharon believed that teaching children wasn’t just about facts and figures, but about bettering lives. She became a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma, and past president of the Manhattan NEA. Throughout her teaching career and even after retirement, Sharon was well known for guiding and nurturing young teachers with support, laughter, and tough love when needed.

As a Church Elder of First Christian Church, Sharon served on numerous worship committees, taught Sunday school, became Sunday school superintendent, led summer bible school, and was instrumental in designing the kitchens for the new building. With the building of the new church, Sharon’s passion became the church child care. Taking up a role as the child care cook, Sharon went out of her way to prepare meals for the children that were not just nutritious, but accommodated many allergies. This was a natural extension of Sharon’s great joy, cooking with her grandchildren. Her favorite time of year was the few days preceding Christmas when her grandchildren would come and stay at the house and make all types of Christmas candies and cookies. This tradition continued even as the grandchildren grew and began college.

The family will hold a small private service and plans on a larger public celebration of life when we can gather safely as a community. Kelly was born on January 8, 1963 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of William “Eddie” and Joy Stroupp Givens.&nbsp; He was raised in Phillipsburg, Kansas.&nbsp; He graduated from High School and attended college.

Kelly served overseas in the United States Army.&nbsp; He was very proud of his service to his country.

Kelly worked as a project superintendent for Walters Morgan Construction.&nbsp; His job took him to various locations in Kansas and Oklahoma.&nbsp; He loved to ride his Harley Davidson and enjoyed being with his friends and family.&nbsp; Kelly also enjoyed gardening.

Kelly married Donna K. Storey on June 29, 2019, in St. George.&nbsp; She survives at their home.

He is also survived by many family,&nbsp;friends, and co-workers.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kirby Givens.

Gregory Alan Phillips, age 62, of Zeandale, died September 17, 2020, at his residence.

He was born April 27, 1958, in Augusta, Georgia, the son of Alan Lee and Sue Ann (Wilson) Phillips.

Greg graduated from High School in Gretna, Nebraska. He was the owner and operator of Phillips Brothers Construction Company doing residential construction since 1981.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed trapping. He had a heart of gold and was very devoted to his friends.

Survivors include his three children: Lance Phillips of Elkhorn, NE, Brandie Valle of Sierra Vista, AZ, and Cassie Kelly of Ft. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 24th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Pastor Clayton With officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in the Zeandale Community.

Gregory Alan Phillips, age 62, of Zeandale, died September 17, 2020, at his residence.He was born April 27, 1958, in Augusta, Georgia, the son of Alan Lee and Sue Ann (Wilson) Phillips.Greg graduated from High School in Gretna, Nebraska. He was the owner and operator of Phillips Brothers Construction Company doing residential construction since 1981.He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed trapping. He had a heart of gold and was very devoted to his friends.Survivors include his three children: Lance Phillips of Elkhorn, NE, Brandie Valle of Sierra Vista, AZ, and Cassie Kelly of Ft. Leslie Lynn Jones, 69, of Manhattan, passed away, September 12th, in Topeka. He worked for the City of Manhattan in the Street and Sewer maintenance Department.

Leslie was born in Manhattan, on January 19, 1951, the son of the late Ruby (Jeeter) Jones and Leslie Lloyd Scott. He was married to Kathleen "Kathy" (Evans) Jones. on Oct. 14, 1970 Sioux City, Iowa. He loved to go hunting, fishing, boating and being with family and friends.

Leslie is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathy of the home; three sons Cornel Evans Jones and companion Laura Samuelson , of Salina; Regan Jones, of Pompano Beach, FL; Leslie Jones Jr., of Manhattan; two sisters, Marvine Jones-Nephew and Renavay Chatfield, of Manhattan, and his grandchildren Marquise Adams, Aiyana Lynch, Donita Jones.

Leslie was preceded in death by a daughter, Ashley Chatfield and his parents.

Services are private at the convenience of family. The family requests any donations be directed to the American Lung Association.

Leslie Lynn Jones

Vickie Lynn Kaempfe was born in 1947 in Ellsworth, Kansas.  She is the daughter of Jack L. Campbell and Donna F. Ulrich Campbell.  Vickie attended Ellsworth grade school and high school where she graduated in 1965.  She married William (Bill) Dean Kaempfe of Sylvan Grove, Kansas on October 18th, 1965.  Later in life she graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina.  Vickie and Bill made their home(s) in Goodland, Oberlin and Marion, Kansas.  They had three boys, Robby, Darrin and Brent.

  Vickie worked as a Police Dispatcher in Goodland, Oil Field Dispatcher in Oberlin, College Recruiter in Salina and a Highway Construction Engineer for KDOT in Marion.  Vickie always enjoyed her kids athletic and school events.  She never missed a football game, track meet or wrestling tournament.  She always enjoyed cooking for her family and going on family trips together to Colorado and Wilson Lake.  She had a very close relationship with her sisters Caroline, Lynette and her brother Jack.  She would spend hours on the phone with them every weekend just catching up on the week’s happenings and what was going on in their lives.  Vickie was the oldest of the siblings and always made sure she did everything she could to take care of them. Vickie and Bill loved Christmas.  They have been collecting Christmas decorations and lights for years.  They have been putting up outside and inside Christmas lights and decorations for years at their home on Marion Lake.  Each year they would get lines of cars coming by to see their lights and decorations and serve hot chocolate and Christmas goodies to the people coming by to view.  Vickie also enjoyed cooking and baking and in her retirement, she volunteered at the Marion Senior Citizen Center preparing meals and delivering Meals on Wheels.  She also volunteered at the Marion Food Bank.  Vickie and Bill were active in the Marion Lutheran Church.

 Vickie loved her family.  She is survived by: spouse(William Dean Kaempfe), sons Robby Dean Kaempfe and wife Jill(Whitaker). Darrin Wade Kaempfe and wife Robyn(Clarke).  Brent Lee Kaempfe and wife Dee Ann(Steinbring).  She is also survived by siblings Caroline(Johnson), Lynette(Vondra) and Jack Campbell.  Grandkids Remington, Hannah, Taylor, Madison, Mateo, Abigail, Alexandra and Ashlyn, Jack, Ashley, Kristian, Miranda and Vaughn Koch and his wife Brooke.  She has two great grandsons, Westen, Gannon and a third great grandson due November 5th.

 Vickie and Bill were married for 54 years and on their 50th Anniversary, they took a cruise with family to Belize, Rattan and Cozumel to Celebrate.  She courageously battled cancer for 4 years and left this earth with her family close.  She loved and she was loved.

 Services will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marion led by Pastor John Werner.  Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion is serving the family.
