

Funeral services for Kenneth J. Huston, age 68, of Abilene will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 29, 2020 at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene with Father Don Zimmerman officiating. Mr. Huston passed away Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Village Manor Nursing Home.

He was born October 20, 1951 in Abilene the son of Paul P. “Pat” and Stella (Whitehair) Huston. He graduated from Abilene High School and worked for over 30 years for ADM Milling in Abilene. Kenny enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his friends and family.

Kenny is survived by his son Greg (Timberly Bowers) Huston of Abilene, Brother Leo Huston of Platte City, Missouri, Sister Patricia Ann Lane of Edmund, Oklahoma, grandchildren Lindsay Bowers and Matthew Bowers, and his great grandson Maxus Bowers. He was preceded in death by his son Christopher Huston, brother-in-law Ron Lane, and his parents.

The family has selected cremation and there will be no visitation. Please dress casually for the service. A lunch will be provided at the home of Kenny following the service where the family will greet friends. The address is 1128 1600 Avenue near Abilene. Dr. Richard “Dick” Pannbacker, age 79 of Manhattan, Kansas, died Saturday, February 22, 2020, at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community.

Dick was born in Clay Center, Kansas and raised on the family farm in Washington County, Kansas. He was the only child of George and Leona Pannbacker. He graduated from Washington High School and continued his education at Kansas State University receiving a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. In 1968 he completed his Ph.D. in bacteriology at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts.

His long career in science, research and teaching took him from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio to St. Louis University in Missouri to the University of Colorado, Denver. He also spent several years teaching high school chemistry and served as an adjunct instructor teaching chemistry at KSU during summers.

During retirement, he and his wife traveled to Italy, Scandinavia, the Caribbean Islands, Alaska, and Hawaii. Dick loved woodworking; He built some pieces of furniture still in use in the home. But his favorite project was designing and creating jewelry boxes from exotic hardwoods; many of which he sold or gave away to friends. He also enjoyed singing and was a member of the Manhattan Barbershop Chorus.

Dr. Pannbacker is survived by his wife Candace (nee Lindquist) of the home and a stepson Christopher Hayden of Manhattan, Kansas. He is also survived by two daughters Laura Guerin and Gretchen Herd and a son Christian Pannbacker, by his first marriage.

Cremation is planned. A family remembrance gathering will be planned for a later date. Dick’s final resting place will be Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan, Kansas.

Shirley Ann (Hoppe) Galindo, age 84, died on Saturday February 22, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House, Manhattan, Kansas.

She was born on August 22, 1935 in Sandusky, Ohio the daughter of William &amp; Alzena (Hand) Hoppe. Shirley was a Nurses Aide &amp; a wonderful caregiver for her family.

Shirley was married to Coy Smith and later Keeno Galindo, they both preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: Richard and Wayne Brightman, William Hoppe Jr. and Gene Hoppe; sisters: Alice Denhart, Alzena Meinert and Betty June Hoppe.

Survivors include her children: Michael Smith (Beverly) of Manhattan, KS, Randall Smith (Terry) of Westerville, OH, Keeno Galindo (Janet) of Castalia, OH, Regina Sanchez (Gilbert) of Sandusky, OH and Charles Galindo of Castalia, OH. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; a sister: Carol Pitts and a brother: Glenn Hoppe.

Private Memorial Services will be at a later date.

John K. Strickler, age 84, of Manhattan, died February 23, 2020, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born August 14, 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Bert M. and Ruth L. (Kemper) Strickler.

John was a professor emeritus working with the Kansas State Forest Service at Kansas State University. In 1987 to 1989 he served as Special Assistant for Environment and Natural Resources to Governor Mike Hayden as his liaison with the Kansas Legislature to establish the first funding for the Kansas Water Plan.

He was married to Joan C. Mulholland on September 7, 1957, in St. Louis, Missouri. Mrs. Strickler survives of the home. Additional survivors include his two children: John Strickler and his wife Debbi of Wichita, KS, and Carole Hay and her husband Chris of Wamego, KS; one brother Robert Strickler; seven granddaughters: Megan Strickler, Nikki, Bailey and Abbey Marcotte, Polly Wasinger, Hanna Hermann and Jayme Hay; and one great-granddaughter Stella Hermann.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.\

Helen Anna King was born in Washington D.C. May 6, 1943 and passed away February 17, 2020 at Via Christi Village of natural causes. She was 76.

 She and most of her siblings were raised in Philadelphia, PA and later relocated to Manhattan, KS. She married Harvey Paul King and they had 5 children together before divorcing.

Helen was proceeded in death by her parents, Magdaline (Kientz) and Peter Horocofsky, and her youngest son Michael King.

She is survived by three sisters, Mary Jane (Roger) Holmes, Stella A. (Michael) Sweeney, Tina Horocofsky and one brother Joe Horocofsky (Sherry Gehrt, her children Debbie (Steve) Friesz, Ricky King, Becky King, Teresa (Luke) Everding, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Helen was such an animal lover and requested any memorial contributions be made to the T. Russell Reitz Animal Shelter in Manhattan, KS and can be sent in care of Yorgensen, Meloan, Londeen Funeral Home.

Kevin Eugene Harris, 46, Manhattan, Kansas, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2020 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital.

Kevin is survived by his wife 15 years, Kurstin Apell Harris and son, Henry Eugene Harris; parents, Aubrey and Rosemary Harris; sister, Meredith(Jeff) Morris; mother-in-law Kathy Sue Apell; brothers-in-law Mark (Pam) Apell, and Hobs (Angie) Apell; aunts Margaret Duggar and Olene Harris; nieces, Kayla and Emily; nephews, Hobs, Timothy, Harrison, Michael, Jagger, and Daks. He was preceded in death by father-in-law, Dean Apell.

Kevin was born on August 1, 1973, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. As a child, his father was in the military, and he grew up in many places, both in the US and abroad. He graduated from Lansing (KS) High School in 1991 and then Kansas State University, where he studied computer engineering.

A well-known fixture in Manhattan’s restaurant community, Kevin worked at several places over the years, including Raoul’s Escondido, Mel’s Tavern, Harry’s and So Long Saloon. He recognized a lifelong dream when he and Kurstin opened their own restaurant, The Chef Cafe, in 2008. He spent countless hours in the kitchen there, making delicious food and touching countless lives along the way.

He was a generous spirit, and never hesitated to lend a hand to those in need. Kevin was the absolute best in a crisis—he never hesitated, and knew the next right thing to do. He had the mind of an engineer and could fix just about anything, which came in handy when owning a restaurant and a 100+-year-old home.

An avid reader, Kevin was rarely without a bemouth of a spy novel. He loved wearing cozy cardigan sweaters and Birkenstocks. His laugh (more like a giggle) was infectious. He loved a good joke, and he loved to tell a good story. But nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his son and making him laugh.

A memorial service will be Friday, February 28, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Ave. and a come-and-go reception at The Chef Cafe, 111 S. 4th St., will immediately follow. Donations made in lieu of flowers can be made to the Kevin E. Harris Memorial Fund for Henry’s education. It will be a family-friendly service and children are encouraged to come.

Kenneth Glen Reavis, 85, of Great Bend, Kansas, formerly of Wamego and St. George, died Monday, February 24, 2020, at the Ellinwood Regional Hospital. &nbsp; Kenny was a long-time resident of the area.

Kenny was born on August 6, 1934, in rural Stigler, Oklahoma, the son of Willie and Winnie Spangler Reavis. &nbsp;He attended local schools and graduated in 1952 from Stigler High School.

Kenny served in the United States Army from 1954 through 1956, and then worked his entire career for the Bell Telephone System installing tele-communications equipment. &nbsp; He worked in a variety of locations but mostly in Oklahoma and Kansas. &nbsp;He moved to the Manhattan, St. George and Wamego area in 1965. &nbsp;In his later years he worked installing tele-communications equipment all over the nation. He retired after 44 years. &nbsp;Kenny moved to Great Bend to be close to family in 2019.

Kenny was a life member of the American Legion, and Pioneers of America. &nbsp;He was a charter member of the Blackjack Saddle Club and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. &nbsp;Kenny also served at the Municipal Judge for St. George in the 1970’s. He was the caretaker for the St. George Cemetery and coached girls softball. &nbsp;He loved to fish and attend Bluegrass festivals. &nbsp;In later years he participated in the Meadowlark Hills Parkinson’s Foundation. &nbsp;

Kenny married Darla Jane Musgrove on September 2, 1960, in Council Grove, Kansas. &nbsp; She survives at their home.

Kenny is also survived by his children; Keith Reavis (Sandra, Great Bend, William Reavis (Krystine, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Stephen Reavis, Concordia; his siblings, Peggy Cornelieus (Earnie, Edmond, Oklahoma, Patsy Rigual (Chico, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Don Reavis (Rita, Mustang, Oklahoma, and David Reavis, (Donna, Stigler, Oklahoma; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. &nbsp;Kenny was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Neljean Reavis and an infant brother.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, February 29, 2020, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego. &nbsp;Reverend Dr. Tony Mattia will be officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow at St. George Cemetery. &nbsp;Kenny will lie-in-state, on Friday, beginning at 3:00 pm, at the mortuary, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. &nbsp;They suggest memorial contributions to the Meadowlark Hills Parkinson’s Foundation or Trinity Baptist Church, and those may be sent in care of the mortuary.&nbsp;

Doris Janet Chase, 87, of Council Grove, went home to be with The Lord, Wednesday, February 26th, 2020, after a short bout with Leukemia.&nbsp; Doris is survived by a sister, Geneva (Hank) Bast of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a son, Brian (Becky) Chase of Council Grove, Kansas; a daughter, Carla (Robb) Stephenson of Westmoreland, Kansas; 4 grandchildren, Jesse (Deidre) Knight of Council Grove, Kansas; Michael Chase of Lyons, Kansas; Mark (Natasha) Chase of Emporia, Kansas; and Jana (Justin) Phillips of Tribune, Kansas.&nbsp; Doris was also blessed with 6 step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Radford “Rack” Chase, and 6 siblings; brothers Junior, Bill, Dick, Bob, and sisters Maxine and Roberta.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Doris was born to John Sherman Blanton and Leora (Parrish) Blanton on September 16, 1932 in Dunlap, Kansas.&nbsp; She lived with her seven siblings and her parents until she married Rack on October 18, 1952.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Doris and Rack travelled the country, residing in California and New Mexico before settling back in Council Grove. They opened several businesses, including:&nbsp; Council Grove Cycle Sales, Chase Liquor, Council Grove Metals, Chase Rentals, Doris’s Creative Quilting, and several other ventures that they enjoyed.&nbsp; Doris was a busy bee, as she was also employed by Fairmont Creamery, SRS of Kansas, Varney’s Bookstore, The Cottage House, and completed many college courses at Butler Community College of Council Grove.&nbsp; Doris and Rack enjoyed many years of good friends and family while living on the Council Grove City Lake; where ever the two of them were, a good time was sure to follow.&nbsp; The memories made during these years have provided many stories, none embellished, over the last several days.

Doris Janet Chase, 87, of Council Grove, went home to be with The Lord, Wednesday, February 26th, 2020, after a short bout with Leukemia.&nbsp; Doris is survived by a sister, Geneva (Hank) Bast of Cedar Falls, Iowa; a son, Brian (Becky) Chase of Council Grove, Kansas; a daughter, Carla (Robb) Stephenson of Westmoreland, Kansas; 4 grandchildren, Jesse (Deidre) Knight of Council Grove, Kansas; Michael Chase of Lyons, Kansas; Mark (Natasha) Chase of Emporia, Kansas; and Jana (Justin) Phillips of Tribune, Kansas.&nbsp; Doris was also blessed with 6 step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Radford “Rack” Chase, and 6 siblings; brothers Junior, Bill, Dick, Bob, and sisters Maxine and Roberta.&nbsp;&nbsp;Doris was born to John Sherman Blanton and Leora (Parrish) Blanton on September 16, 1932 in Dunlap, Kansas.&nbsp; She lived with her seven siblings and her parents until she married Rack on October 18, 1952.&nbsp;&nbsp;Doris and Rack travelled the country, residing in California and New Mexico before settling back in Council Grove. Diane Kay (Rees) Loddy was born September 28, 1951 in Council Grove, Kansas to Shirley M. (Burton) and Donald G. Rees. She spent most of her early years in Council Grove, except for 6 years (1960 – 1966) in Freemont, Nebraska.&nbsp; She graduated from Council Grove High School in 1969.

During her adult life she lived in many states (Colorado, New Mexico, Louisiana, North Carolina and Virginia) and worked at several different jobs.&nbsp; When she retired she was working for the state of Virginia as manager of an ABC store.

In 1975, she married James Loddy in Denver, CO. They lived in Chama, NM, where they owned and operated Kelly’s Restaurant for several years before divorcing. Upon returning to Council Grove, she worked at the Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant during its construction.&nbsp; There she met her second husband Royce Harrison, with whom she spent the next 22 years in VA, until he passed away in 2006. For the last 13 years, she and her third husband James Poole have lived in Hayes, VA.

Diane was preceded in death by Royce Harrison, both grandparents, Benton and Elsie Burton and Harry and Anna Rees, father Donald G. Rees, brother Donald W. Rees, aunts Fern Metzger and Bea Wessel, and uncle Carl Metzger, Sr. She is survived by James Poole; her mother Shirley Rees; uncle Henry Wessel; cousins: Barry Wessel (Jill, Carol Spencer (Steve, Keith Wessel (Alicia, Michelle Wessel, Carl Metzger Jr. (Janet, and Sharon Fritch (Frank); step-daughter Nicki Toler (Tim); step-grandchildren Katelin Toler and Kendal Toler.

Diane was a competitor, and brought home many ribbons swimming with the local swim team in her youth.&nbsp; She had artistic talent which was obvious in her home and anything she touched. She was a talented seamstress and liked to cook, producing many fine meals. &nbsp;She was fun to be with.&nbsp; Diane was diagnosed with ALS in 2018. The disease moved quickly to rob her body of normal movement and function.&nbsp; She died February 21, 2020, in Hayes, Virginia.&nbsp;

Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association, in care of Sawyer Funeral Home, Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846. She enjoyed researching her genealogy and raising her goats.

Her greatest joy was her family which includes her husband, John Dvorak of Marion; children, Sherry Dvorak of Hesston, Derick (Rachel) Dvorak of Salina and Darrin (Rachel) Dvorak of Galva; grandchildren, Daniel (Annabel) Dvorak, Steven Fortner, Dakota Dvorak, Landon Dvorak, Jacqueline Dvorak, Eragon Dvorak, Derrick (Erica) Dvorak, Zachary Dvorak and Jessica (Matt) Dallas; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Janet (Glen) Slay of Watsonville, California and Rosanne ( John ) Jordan of Gunnison, Colorado, and sister-in-law, Janet Richardson.&nbsp;

Carol Jean (Richardson) Dvorak - February 15, 1949-February 21, 2020 (age 71)

Helmut was born on February 18, 1929 in Pforzheim, Germany.  He was the eldest son of Emil Hermann and Paulina (Heller) Hoelle.  Helmut was educated in Germany to be a train engineer and also attend Marine training.  He immigrated to America in 1951 with his sister Margaeita to farm with his great uncle and aunt in Upland, Kansas which he did until he became a Marine in the USMC in 1954.  He served in the USMC for 4 years of active duty on a Navy ship as a MP in the Philippines.  He was honorably discharged in 1958 at the rank of Sergeant. 

 Helmut worked at Fort Riley as a steam fitter and was the shop foreman until his retirement.  He was united in marriage to Betty J. Vinton who preceded him in death in 2004.  Helmut loved to go camping and fishing and he and Betty were members of area camping groups for many years.  He was also very skilled at sewing and cross-stitching and could darn a sock better than anyone.  Helmut loved to collect, clean and crack black walnuts and made it an annual hobby to fill lots of jars and then give them to family and friends.&nbsp; He lived in in Junction City for several years until moving to Dwight, Ks where he live from 1972 to 2018 when he moved to Herington to simplify his life.

He is survived by his brother, Ulrich Hoelle (Barbara) and step-brother Manfried Klein of Germany, sisters, Erika Dlugosch, Bavaria, Lieselotte Pohl, Germany,and Waltraud Bammes, Herington and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.  Helmut passed away in his home on February 21, 2020.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, an infant daughter Heidy Marie Hoelle and sisters Adelheid Mader and Margareta Painter.

 Helmut will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced in mid-March at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery near Ogden. He was a caregiver for his daughter Carrie “Annie” until her passing.

His loving family includes his mother, Jane Hampton of Potwin; girlfriend, Mary Ann Smith of El Dorado; siblings, Rebecca “Becky” Builta of Potwin, Kim Trumpower of El Dorado, Cheryl Lewis of El Dorado and Jared Lee Hampton of Potwin; nieces and nephews, Melissa Boyer, Jessica Ritter, Justin Builta, and Christopher Hampton.

He was preceded in death by his father; daughter, Carrie “Annie” Hampton; nephew, Jeremy Day and a brother-in-law, Kenny Builta. &nbsp;Pete passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at the age of 56 years old.

His family will gather for a Celebration of Life Memorial Service at McGill Cemetery on Sunday, March 1, at 2:00 p.m.

Mark F. Roberts, 58, passed away unexpectedly on February 18, 2020. Cremation has taken place.

Mark was born January 7, 1962 at Ft. Riley, KS to Francis M. and Satomi (Inagi) Roberts.He was raised in Junction City, graduating from JCHS class of 1980. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Air Force, proudly serving for 12 years. Upon completion of his honorable service, he returned to Junction City and joined the Junction City Police Department, June 1993.He retired from the Junction City Police Department as the Sergeant in charge of the lab. Upon retirement, he returned to the Junction City Police Department as a civilian evidence technician.

Mark married Susan Germann in April 1983 and was the proud father of two daughters, Kathrine and Michael Johns of Derby, Kansas, and Victoria Roberts and Keenan Rucker or Warsaw, Missouri.He was the proud grandfather of four grandchildren Malakai Johnson, Makenzie Johnson, Harley Rucker and Tayvin Rucker.

Mark is also survived by his sisters Lynda (Robin) Caswell of Opelika, Alabama, Carroll (Karl) Hochstein of Ankeny, Iowa, brother Francis (Diana) Roberts II of Alma, Kansas, Mother-in-Law Judith Germann of Junction City,Sisters-in-Law Tracy Locklear of Junction City, Mary Ritchason of Pompano Beach, Florida, Brother-in-Law Chris Germann of Greensboro, North Carolina, Jim (SeHee) Germann of Junction City, and Dan (Lana) Germann of Vienna, Missouri along with many nieces and nephews.

After winning the battle with Liver Cancer Rodney L. Christenson, 59, of Junction City, passed away at his home surrounded by family, on February 18, 2020 in Junction City.

Rodney was born May 18, 1960 the only child of Willard and Phyllis (Mock) Christenson in Junction City, KS. He attended JCHS and graduated in 1978. After graduation he went to work for Geary County public works, where he worked for 42 years. He Loved running the oil truck in the summer and HATED pushing snow in the winter. He accepted Christ as his Savior in 1976. He and Vicki are members of the Junction City Baptist church.

He married Vicki (Whaley) Christenson in April 2001. Throughout his life he has had a love for his friends, cats, nice cars , racing, and motorcycles! Rodney loved his family, Church, Church family and his Pastor Adam Langston and family, but his Greatest love were his Grandkids!

He is survived by his wife Vicki of the home, his father Willard Christenson; Step-sons, Dustin Prather (Kambria, Nick Prather, Corey Prather (Jamie); Grandson’s Jaxson, Owen, Taven, Cayden, &amp; Granddaughter Ronni, Uncle Jimmy Christenson all of Junction City, KS. His Father in law Charles Whaley of Arkansas City , KS, brothers in law Gary Whaley (Janet, Scott Whaley (Lori) nephews Zach and Aaron Whaley &amp; niece Madisyn Whaley, Aunts, Uncles and cousins. And so many friends!

He was preceded in death by his Mother, Phyllis Christenson and Mother in law, Bernice Whaley.

A celebration of life will be held at Junction City Baptist Church, 908 S. Madison, Junction City, KS on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at 10am with Pastor Adam Langston officiating. Cremation will follow the services with inurnment at Highland Cemetery in Junction City, KS at a later date. Visitation will be Friday, February 21, 2020 from 6 pm to 8pm at Johnson Funeral Chapel.

Bonita was a Christian. She loved God, her family and animals.

Walter C. Hoffman, age 88, of Manhattan, died Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan.

Walter was born on August 26, 1931, in Preston, Kansas, the son of Walter C. Hoffman Sr. and Minnie E. (Tice) Hoffman. He graduated high school with the class of 1949 and then served in the United State Air Force. He then attended Kansas State University and earned his Bachelors Degree in 1958.

On January 16, 1955, in Turon, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Twila J. Kittle.

Walter worked for Kansas State University in the Controllers Office as an accountant for many years. He was a founding member of the Stagg Hill Golf Club in Manhattan. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle whenever and wherever he could. He rode over 600,000 miles over the years and he was a member of the BMW MOA Club. He and Twila were members of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Stalcup, and his brothers, William Hoffman and Keith Hoffman.

Survivors include his wife Twila; his children: Rick Hoffman (Carol) of Round Rock, Texas, Steven Hoffman (Ercilia) of Tracy, California, Brenda Clark (Kirk) of Stow, Massachusetts, and Eric Hoffman (Alicia) of Camarillo, California; and also, his brother Robert Hoffman of Hoover, Alabama; and his eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services for Mr. Hoffman will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 22, 2020, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz in Manhattan, with Pastor Sarah Marsh officiating. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall at the church. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Donald Lee Berges, age 85, of Manhattan, died February 17, 2020, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House.

He was born August 18, 1934, in Onaga, Kansas, the son of Roy R. and Velma L. (Zabel) Berges.

Donald was baptized September 16, 1934, and Confirmed May 7, 1950, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Duluth, KS. He graduated from Onaga High School in 1952.

On August 14, 1955, in Seneca, Kansas, he was married to Mary Joan Godbout at the Methodist Church in Seneca, Kansas. They lived in Onaga and Wamego prior to moving to Manhattan in 1961.

Donald worked for the Manhattan Fire Department, retiring as a Lt. He operated Kings Rug and Carpet Cleaners for three years and then worked 18 years for the City of Manhattan in Building and Code Services. He retired from the city in 1996, and then worked part-time for Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home for many years.

Survivors include his wife Mary Jo of Manhattan; five children: Marcia Quick and her husband Larry of Manhattan, Garry Berges and his wife Linda of Junction City, Lori Corbin and her husband Mark of Sioux City, IA, Mark Berges and his wife Caron of St. George, and Carol Workman and her husband Robert of Meridian, MS; his brother Lyle Berges and his wife Phyllis of St. George; 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Marlin Berges and his grandson Eric Ryan Berges.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was especially proud of his family and loved them dearly.

Donald was a member of the Sedalia Community Church and the Morning Coffee Group. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star and Manhattan Shrine Club.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, February 21st, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Reverend Kevin Larson officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, February 20th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Steven Wayne Patterson, 65, died early Tuesday morning February 18, 2020 at Diversicare of Council Grove after a tough-fought battle with Fronto Temporal Dementia. He was born April 6, 1954, in Junction City, Kansas to Ed and Hazel (Olson) Patterson.

He was the third of six children. He grew up in rural Dwight and attended 1st and 2nd grades at Hillsdale Grade School and&nbsp;&nbsp;3rd-8th &nbsp;at Dwight Grade School and attended high school in Council Grove, graduating with the class of 1972. At CGHS he was active in Brave Voices and was a member of the Braves basketball team, where he was known for his patented “left-handed jump shot.” It was there he met Teena Scott with whom he dated for most of high school and eventually married on March 1, 1975. She preceded him in death in 2007.

Steve and Teena traveled for the next few years with Steve’s job at Neosho Construction. After traveling for a few years, they settled down in Council Grove and in 1986 Steve went to work for Frito Lay out of Topeka, where he worked for&nbsp;29 years. In February 1984 they welcomed their first daughter, Brittany, followed by their second daughter, Samantha, in July 1985.

Steve was an avid farmer and loved to take care of the ground around which he and his family resided. In addition to driving for Frito Lay and farming, Steve also auctioneered for many years with Macy Auctions. He was known for coming in from Frito Lay straight home to the field to work ground and then get up the next day to be at an auction bright and early. He worked hard and was a friend and neighbor to anyone who needed help. But what Steve was most proud of were his two daughters and he was always rushing back to get to whatever activity they were involved in. Whether it was ball games, dance recitals, or 4-H events, Steve was always excited to be a part of their activities.

Steve married Rosann Otte on June 19, 2010. They were grateful for the years they were given and enjoyed life’s simple pleasures.

He was preceded in death by his father, his younger brother Larry, and his first wife Teena.

He is survived by his wife Rosann Patterson of Council Grove, mother Hazel Patterson of Junction City, his daughters, Brittany Fox and husband Matt of Herington, and Samantha Arredondo and husband Agustin of Eudora, sisters Dee Mayer and husband Ken of Shawnee, Carolyn Scott and Cheryl Patterson of Dwight, brother Darrell Patterson and wife Kerry of Shawnee; grandchildren Julian Arredondo, Evelyn Arredondo, and Knute Fox. Also surviving are Rosann’s children, whom thought the world of Steve; Ambre Wachter (Chris) of Raleigh, NC, Matthew Otte (Allison) of Montgomery, TX and Kristin Oleen (Jesse) of Dwight and grandchildren: Reed and Reagan Otte, Jaxon and Lincoln Wachter and Mack Oleen.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:30-7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 20, 2020, at the Council Grove/Dunlap United Methodist Church. John Owen Dalke, 55, passed away on Monday, February&nbsp;17, 2020, at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. John was born on October 21, 1964, in Hillsboro, Kansas. He attended Hillsboro schools and graduated with the class of 1983. John enjoyed playing football and golf, serving as the basketball manager, participating in debate, forensics and vocal music throughout high school. In 1987, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Kansas. He remained at KU to receive his Master’s of Business Administration in 1989.

John worked as a Real Estate broker at the Real Estate Center in Hillsboro. He was an avid KU sports fan and bowler. He was active in his community through his service in the Son’s of American Legion, Post 366, and the Hillsboro Kiwanis Club. John especially enjoyed being Santa Claus for the Marion County Toy Run.

John was preceded in death by his grandparents, A.H. and Doris Dalke, and Julius and Martha Penner; his uncles, Paul Dalke and James Dalke; and his aunt, Karen Penner. He is survived by his parents, John and Delores Dalke of Hillsboro; his brother, Mark (Pat, of Hillsboro; his brother, Matt (Jamey) of Chapman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 22, at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church, rural Hillsboro. Pastor Gaylord Goertzen will officiate. Kenneth Johan Nordberg, 53, of Wamego, Kansas, died Friday, February 14, 2020, at his home. 

He had been member of the community for the last fifteen years.&nbsp; Prior to moving to Kansas he lived in New York.&nbsp; Kenny was born on November 17, 1966, in Bronx, New York, the son of Finnish immigrants, Hassel and Maj-Britt (Skogberg) Nordberg. He attended local schools in northern New Jersey.

Kenny was a carpenter and worked with his father installing computer flooring for his dad’s company and for the NY Union.&nbsp; He then moved to Kansas and worked as a Union Carpenter for different companies.&nbsp; Kenny loved working in the outdoors and always found something to do outside. He was a loyal New York Giants and New Jersey Devil’s fan.

Kenny is survived by his son, Sean Nordberg, Wamego; his sisters, Maria Stivers (Kevin, Ryland Heights, Kentucky and Eva Nordberg-Levy (Sam, Alpharetta, Georgia; nieces and nephews, Ryan (Courtney, Shea, Annika, Maria, Marcus and Erik; grandnephew, A.J., and former wife, Kelley Nordberg.

Barbara Ann (Heyl) Hoyle, 94, died on Monday, February 17th at 3:30 a.m. at Valley View Senior Life Center with her youngest daughter Melanie at her side.

Barbara was born in WaKeeney, Kansas on August 21, 1925 to Nell (Holmes) Heyl and Andrew W. Heyl. In 1935, at the age of nine, she moved with her family to Junction City where she spent the majority of her life. After graduating from Junction City High School in 1943, Barbara attended Christian College in Columbia, Missouri and graduated from Washburn University with a degree in Liberal Arts in 1947. She was a teacher in Bonner Springs and Salina before returning to Junction City where she married Eldon L. Hoyle in 1949 and raised four daughters.

Barbara belonged to The American Association of University Women, The Ladies Reading Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, The Geary Community Hospital Auxiliary and was especially proud of her years on the public library board. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her lifelong friends, golfing, reading, and watching movies. Unlike many her age, she was not afraid to use a computer and enjoyed emailing her friends and family until the last months of her life. At the age of 60, Ms. Hoyle decided she had missed working outside the home and began a career of substitute teaching, working in this capacity for the next 18 years.

Barbara considered herself an ardent feminist and liberal and was not ashamed to admit it. While an activist in her views, she was frustrated by societal circumstances limiting her participation. She often expressed her views as a contributing columnist for the Junction City Daily Union.

Barbara wished to be remembered for her compassion for others. She considered her four daughters to be her greatest contribution to society, as she believed they exhibited a sensitivity and concern for others that she exemplified by her example.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Eldon L. Hoyle. She is survived by her daughters, Shelley Kite (Tom, Melinda Bozarth (Mike, Melanie Laster (Robert, all of Junction City and Leslie Guerra (Larry) of Sanford, Florida. She had six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. At Barbara’s request, no services will be held. Words cannot express how much she will be missed by all who loved her. To her daughters, she was not only mother, but also doctor, teacher, counselor, cook, philosopher, and friend. Barbara Ann (Heyl) Hoyle, 94, died on Monday, February 17th at 3:30 a.m. at Valley View Senior Life Center with her youngest daughter Melanie at her side.Barbara was born in WaKeeney, Kansas on August 21, 1925 to Nell (Holmes) Heyl and Andrew W. Heyl. In 1935, at the age of nine, she moved with her family to Junction City where she spent the majority of her life. After graduating from Junction City High School in 1943, Barbara attended Christian College in Columbia, Missouri and graduated from Washburn University with a degree in Liberal Arts in 1947. She was a teacher in Bonner Springs and Salina before returning to Junction City where she married Eldon L. Hoyle in 1949 and raised four daughters.Barbara belonged to The American Association of University Women, The Ladies Reading Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, The Geary Community Hospital Auxiliary and was especially proud of her years on the public library board. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her lifelong friends, golfing, reading, and watching movies. Unlike many her age, she was not afraid to use a computer and enjoyed emailing her friends and family until the last months of her life. At the age of 60, Ms. Hoyle decided she had missed working outside the home and began a career of substitute teaching, working in this capacity for the next 18 years.Barbara considered herself an ardent feminist and liberal and was not ashamed to admit it. While an activist in her views, she was frustrated by societal circumstances limiting her participation. She often expressed her views as a contributing columnist for the Junction City Daily Union.Barbara wished to be remembered for her compassion for others. She considered her four daughters to be her greatest contribution to society, as she believed they exhibited a sensitivity and concern for others that she exemplified by her example.Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Eldon L. Carole Ann Moege,&nbsp;77, of Alma, Kansas, died peacefully, Monday, February 17, 2020, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.&nbsp;

Carole was born July 2, 1942 in Wamego, KS to Elmer and Evelyn Meyer Zeckser. She attended St. John Lutheran School and graduated from Alma High School in 1960. She then attended Clark’s Business School.

Carole married Adolph “Sam” Moege, Jr. on October 21, 1962 in Alma. They traveled with his job and lived in many places in Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Carole worked as a secretary, was a homemaker and sold Avon until their three children were in school. She was a secretary/bookkeeper for a CPA firm in Sand Springs, OK for 3 years and for the Sahara Sand Company for 9 years until she retired in 1993. Sam and Carole moved to Oklahoma City, OK and lived there for 8 years. They moved back to Alma in 2001. Carole worked at the Alma branch of the Wabaunsee Regional Library for several years.

Carole was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City and St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. She was also a member of LWML, Friendship Circle, the Spring Creek Community Club and the Open Door Club. Carole adored her family, grandchildren and friends. She enjoyed reading, quilting, baking and creating scrapbooks. Those who knew Carole also knew she loved country music, especially George Strait and Garth Brooks. &nbsp;

Along with her husband, Sam, Carole is survived by her mother, Evelyn Zeckser, Alma; sister, Marilyn Thomas, Topeka; son, Terry Moege (Debbie, Valley Center, KS; daughters, Cheryl Markle (Fletcher, Arvada, CO and Shelly Bush (Darryl, Oklahoma City, OK; and grandchildren, Matthew, Reagan, William, Bridget Moege; Sydney, Delanie, Braden Markle; Nathan and Samantha Bush, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, February 21, 2020, at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. Burial will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Carole will lie-in-state on Thursday, February 20, beginning at 4:00 pm and the family will greet friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. George Edward “Ed” Beswick, age 70 of Green, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Clay County Medical Center.

He was born on June 29, 1949 in Clay Center, the son of George Arnold and Dorothy Pauline (Wiegers) Beswick.  He attended grade school in Clifton and graduated from Clifton High School in 1967.

On June 5, 1971, at the Fact United Methodist Church, he was married to Elaine Marie Slingsby.  She survives of the home.

Ed was a farmer who loved working the land.  He started a Charolais cattle herd 40 years ago and his son continues with it today.  He was a member of the Green United Methodist Church, enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Dawn Rippe of Linn and Jennifer Carlson and husband Brian of West Chester, Pennsylvania; one son, Jason Beswick and wife Ashley of Palmer; six grandchildren, Garrett Rippe, Jill Rippe, Peighton Carlson, Kenadee Carlson, Carter Beswick and Jovey Beswick; his mother, Dorothy Beswick of Clay Center and one sister, Diane Pfeifley and husband Phil of Riley.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold Beswick; his twin brother, Arnie Beswick and his sister, Karen Beswick.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the Parallel Cemetery with Rev. Paul Tessaro officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Fredrick John “Fred” Klucas, age 66 of Leonardville, passed away Friday, February 14, 2020 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born on February 7, 1954 in Watertown, South Dakota, the son of Cecil Edward and Evelyn Ann (Lindner) Klucas.  During his high school years, he enjoyed playing football and wrestling.  He also drove himself and his fellow peers to school as a bus driver.  Along with sports, he enjoyed hanging out with his lifetime friends.

On May 5, 1979 at the Bala Presbyterian Church, he married Kaye Arlene Davies.  She survives of the home.

Fred worked several years as a carpenter and was an all around handyman who always found a way to fix something.  In 2000, he went to work at the Riley County High School in the maintenance department, retiring in 2016.  He was a member of the Fairview Presbyterian Church and served on the Leonardville Volunteer Fire Department for a number of years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Alicia Klucas and Mo Wilane of Leonardville, Kristen Fisher and Jake of Wichita and Kelsey Klucas of Manhattan; three grandsons, Ababacar John Wilane, Ibrahim Lucas Wilane and Isaac Ray Fisher; one granddaughter, Josephine Evelyn Fisher; two sisters, Barb Hoftizer and Vy of Baudette, Minnesota and Sandy Clasen of Solomon; two sisters-in-law, Linda Klucas of Solomon and Elaine Heller and Eldo of Riley; two brothers-in-law, Wayne Davies of Leonardville and Donald Davies of Clay Center; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James Klucas and Ed Klucas; one niece, Tina Klucas and one nephew, Doug Hoftizer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the Fairview Presbyterian Church with Pastors Gerry Sharp and Kevin Larson officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery.
