

Leonard Calvin Parker, 92 formerly of Manhattan and Wamego died in Frisco, Texas on February 13, 2020. He was born on November 21, 1927 in rural Republic, Kansas to Charles D. and Ruby Irene (Powers) Parker. Leonard attended and graduated from one room country elementary schools near Republic and graduated from Republic High School.

He attended Grand Island Business College in Grand Island, Nebraska before he entered the Army Air Force as World War II was near an end. Leonard flew Search and Rescue Missions as a Radar Specialist based on the Azores Islands in the North Atlantic.

After serving his country he returned to Kansas to earn a B.S and M.S Degrees from Kansas State University. While at K-State he met Eula Mae Taylor. They were married at St Luke's Lutheran Church in Manhattan on August 23, 1952. They were blessed with two sons (David and Larry). David and his wife Nancy blessed them with two grandchildren, Michael and Katie. Larry and his wife Sue blessed them with one grandson, Adam. Adam was born 5 months after Larry’s untimely death.

Leonard's career path included, Vocational Agricultural Instructor at Ellis, Kansas, County Extension Agent in both Lyons and Smith Center, Kansas, Farm Management Association Economist at Wamego, Kansas, and the last 12 years as Professor and Administrator of the Kansas Farm Management Assocations for the Department of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University. Leonard retired in April 1990. Leonard also served on the Wamego USD 320 school board for a number of years. After retirement, Leonard and Eula Mae spent over twenty years volunteering at the Manhattan hospital.

Leonard is survived by a son David (Nancy) of Frisco, Texas, daughter-in-law Sue Mowder (Jim) of Topeka, Kansas, three grandchildren, Michael (Erica) Parker of Spring, Texas, a granddaughter Katie Parker of Frisco, Texas, and Adam Mowder of Washington DC, two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Emersyn Parker; sister Joyce (Darwin) Bohler of Statesboro, Georgia and sister-in-law Audrey Parker of Owatonna, Minnesota and numerous nieces and nephews.

Leonard was preceded in death by Eula Mae on September 15, 2019, his parents, his son Larry and brothers Charles Parker and Donald Parker.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, February 22nd, at the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 330 Sunset Street, Manhattan, with Reverend Michael J. Schmidt officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Wamego City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. Friday, February 21st, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Sandra Marie Spiker (Burns, 68, of El Dorado, Ks. died Sunday February 9, 2020, at her home.

She was born on April 6, 1951 in Holton, Kansas, the daughter of Edwin and Bonnie (Hamlin) Burns. She was a 1969 graduate of Luckey High School and later attended Marymount College.

Sandra, a Christian, who retired from a 20-plus year career with Walmart, and also was a long-term employee of McCall Pattern Company. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her infant sister Ann.

She is survived by her children, Leah (Alan) Taylor of Olsburg, Valerie (Dustin) Siegle of Westmoreland, Kandi Simpson (Chad Campbell) of Phoenix, Arizona, Joey Simpson (Robin Lenard) of El Dorado; her siblings Linda Correll, Doris (Bill) Bolicki, Ray (Nancy) Burns, Frank (Donna) Burns, Beth (Kevin) Fately, Sharon (Ryan) Runyan, and John Burns, and also her 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandsons.

A Vigil Service with the Rosary will be held on Monday February 17, 2020 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan. The family will greet friends following the Vigil until 8:00 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday February 18, 2020 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, with Father Kerry Ninemire as Celebrant. Interment will be private at a later date in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Sherril "Sherry" Loretta Rindt was born in her family's home at Council Grove on September 10, 1939 to Ralph L. and Wilma V. (Stiver) Taylor.  She attended grade school and high school in Council Grove, graduating in the Class of 1957.  The family moved to a farm in 1950 where Sherry learned to milk cows, and helped bale hay, among other chores. Sherry began working at King's Café in Council Grove at the age of 14.

  In September of 1957, she was married to James Clark and they had three sons.  In 1960, she was divorced and worked to raise her sons as a single mother.  On May 24, 1964, Sherry was united in marriage to Gerald Rindt in Council Grove and the family moved to White City.  Sherry and Gerald had a daughter the next year.  In 1977, Gerald, Sherry and Kristi moved to Salina.  Sherry worked for Woolco Department Store until it closed in 1980.  She formed lifelong friendships with her co-workers.  The rest of her work career was spent with several companies until she retired in 2006.  She had a strong love for the church, her family and especially her grandchildren.  Sherry enjoyed reading western novels, especially her favorites by Louis Lamour, watching movies and doing any kind of word puzzles.

   Her greatest joy was her family which includes her husband of 55 years Gerald Rindt of Herington, her children Jim Clark, Keith Clark, Ken (Cheryl) Clark and Kristi (Ben) Meyer; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, sister in law Bonnie Taylor, brother in law Charles Rindt and several nieces, nephews and friends.

  Sherry passed away on Thursday February 13, 2020 at the Herington Municipal Hospital.  She is preceded in death by her parents ,brother Dennis Taylor and sister in law Eleanor Rindt.

  Sherry's family will gather with friends on Saturday February 22, 2020 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Herington for her memorial service led by Reverend Bill Neuman.  She will be laid to rest following the service at St. John's Cemetery in White City.

On Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 at 3:30 pm in her room at Diversicare of Council Grove, Dorothy Edith Braun went to her eternal home at the age of 84, where she was joyfully received by&nbsp;her longtime Savior Jesus Christ and reunited with her young son David Paul, who entered Heaven at the age of 6 in 1966.&nbsp;

Dorothy's life was characterized by her commitment to Christ, which began at the age of 14.&nbsp; Born on July 30, 1935 in Powell, Wyoming to Dick and Mary Sievers, she was one of six children.&nbsp;She received her bachelor's degree at Northwestern University in Minneapolis, MN where she met her future husband Ralph Braun of Council Grove, KS. They graduated from Northwestern,&nbsp;married on June 8, 1957, headed to Dallas Theological Seminary and from there into many churches, hearts and homes across the United States over their 62 years married and in the ministry. Dorothy was a born homemaker, creating amazing meals, hostessing many feasts and themed parties and raising each of her five children to know in their cradles the name of the Lord. Her children will tell you that she never raised her voice to them in anger, was the epitome of selflessness and sacrificial love, taught countless lessons by example, and sang and hummed her way through life, always pointing out the beauty of nature and God's creation, whether by identifying birds, flowers and rocks by day or constellations by night. She loved gardening, kept meticulous family history records, and read her Bible through many times. Her friends will tell you she was one of a kind, a truly godly wealth of wisdom and a woman who knew and loved the word of God and its Author. Her caregivers might whisper that she was a favorite, that she always listened and gently guided to a better and higher way. Her husband will freely share how blessed he was to be united in matrimony to his Proverbs 31 woman. Her grandchildren will boast of her flaky croissants, decadant chocolate cream roll, their many games of progressive rummy, shared love of old books, her letters to them, her unconditional love and abiding faith. And her great grandchildren were the delight of her twilight years. Dorothy loved well and her legacy is her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and her desire that they walk in truth and God's love all the days of their lives, as she did.

She is survived by her husband Ralph Braun, and son Steven Braun (Cyndi)of Brookings, OR, and daughters Kim Bacon (Dan, Karen Jackson (James, and Mary Allen (Richard) of Council Grove, KS, as well as 22 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

A memorial service honoring Dorothy's life&nbsp;will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 21st, 2020 at the Council Grove Christian Church, located at 106 West Main Street, Council Grove, KS. Shirley (Elmore) Burk, 92, of Junction City, died February 12, 2020 at Geary Community Hospital. Shirley was born March 12, 1927 in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Stephen and Esther (Settgast) Elmore.

Shirley attended all of her schooling in Junction City. She was a homemaker.

On December 10, 1944, Shirley married Frank Kovach at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Junction City. They were later divorced. She later married Russell I. Burk on September 21, 1964 in Weiser, Idaho. Russell died November 25, 1991.

She lived with her family in Portland, Oregon for 30 years, then retired and moved back to Junction City.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Larsen, Vancouver, Washington; a son, Michael Kovach, Seward, Alaska; 2 brothers, DeWane Elmore, Zephyrhills, Florida, and Allen Elmore, Junction City; a sister, Donna Alter, Junction City; 3 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dale Kovach; 3 brothers, Harvey Elmore, James Elmore, and Jack Elmore; and a sister, Arlene Bennett.

Patricia "Pat" A. (Hart) Upham, 72, of Junction City passed away February 12, 2020 in Osage City, KS.

 A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., February 24, 2020 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Father Kulandai officiating. Visitation with the family will be held at Johnson Funeral Chapel, Sunday, February 23, 2020 from 3-5 p.m. with Rosary at 4:30 pm. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery. Immediately following the burial, a celebration of life service will take place at Pat's home 520 W. Pine Street in Junction City.

Pat was born March 22, 1947, Terre Haute, IN to Louis F. and Mary K. Budenz Hart, Jr.

Pat worked for over 33 years at the Junction City Police Department in the records department and was the Records Supervisor at the time of her retirement. She was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church, the Harley Owner's Group and she was a huge KSU Fan and a dedicated Kansas City Chiefs fan. She also belonged to the ESA Sorority.

She is survived by her daughter, Kendra (Cameron) Ediger of TX; her four sons, Lee (Lynn) Mehlman of Los Angeles, CA, John Schwantje of San Bernardino, CA, Patrick (Carla) Austin f Osage City, KS and Trevor (Nute) Engels of Plano, TX; her brother, Louis (Dawley) F. Hart, III of Orange County, CA; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; four nieces and nephews, seven great nieces and nephews.

Dixie Fae Hoogendoorn,&nbsp;82, Spring Hill, Kansas, formerly of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2020.

Dixie was born in St. George, Kansas on October 20, 1937, to Paul Dallas and Fae M. (Anderson) Taggart. &nbsp;At age seven, she became ill and was left paralyzed. &nbsp;Dixie did not let her illness stop her. &nbsp;She graduated from St. George High School and went on to Emporia State University to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree. &nbsp;Dixie taught English at Wellsville High School, Wellsville, Kansas early in her career.&nbsp;

&nbsp;She married Raymond J. Hoogendoorn on June 1, 1963 in Olpe, Kansas and became a Marine Officer's wife. &nbsp;She enjoyed many years of working in the local schools in various roles. &nbsp;Dixie and Raymond owned and operated a computer store in Wamego, Kansas where they played a major role in putting their beloved town of forty years on the worldwide web. &nbsp;Four years ago, upon Ray's passing, Dixie moved to Spring Hill to be with family. &nbsp;Dixie was very creative and loved to write, do oil painting and sew. She beat the odds of her early childhood illness learning to drive a car, getting a college education and raising her family. &nbsp;Dixie will be truly missed by family and friends.&nbsp;Dixie is survived by her daughter Tami (David) Nichols, Spring Hill, Kansas; son Jon Paul (Tracey, Great Falls, Virginia; six grandchildren; Andy Shields (Meghan, Zach Shields, Emily Shields, Allie Paul, Campbell Paul, Brody Paul; and brother Phil Taggart (Barb, Wamego, Kansas. (Anderson) Taggart. &nbsp;At age seven, she became ill and was left paralyzed. &nbsp;Dixie did not let her illness stop her. &nbsp;She graduated from St. George High School and went on to Emporia State University to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education Degree. &nbsp;Dixie taught English at Wellsville High School, Wellsville, Kansas early in her career.&nbsp;&nbsp;She married Raymond J. John D. Lackey, age 36, of Manhattan, died February 10, 2020, at Stormont-Vail Health in Topeka.

He was born October 3, 1983, in Manhattan, the son of Dale T. and Ruth Ann (Henderson) Lackey, and had been a lifetime Manhattan resident.

John graduated from Manhattan High School in 2002 and attended Kansas State University.

He worked for Target and Tanner’s and then in November of 2016 he was hired as an assistant manager at Johnny Kaw’s. John was promoted to GM of Johnny Kaw’s in March 2017. In March 2019 he was promoted to Regional Manager and managed a team of 6 managers, and a staff of over 100. During his interview he was asked “Why do you want to work here?” and he said “I want to help people, lead them and be a part of a team.” John did that and he’s going to go out doing that. John was loved and adored by his team, and they are very grateful for all his help and the positive impact he made on so many lives.

John was a baptized member of First Christian Church. He was a sports fanatic and loved his boxer dogs.

He was preceded in death by his father in 2012.

Survivors include his mother Ruth of Huntsville, Alabama; his sister Christi Sexton and her husband David of Huntsville; his beloved niece and nephew: Cara Sexton and Evan Sexton; and his boxer Nash.

A Celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, February 15th, at the First Christian Church, 3001 Grand Mere Parkway, Manhattan. Private burial will be in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Dawn Darrell Gross, 54, of St. George, Kansas died Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, Kansas.

Dawn was born July 9, 1965, Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Donald and Carol Sowell DeGraff. &nbsp;She attended elementary school in Shawnee Mission, KS and then Manhattan High School. &nbsp;Dawn then attended Crum’s Beauty School. &nbsp;She was a hairdresser in Manhattan for Joyce Allen. &nbsp;For many years she cleaned houses and later worked as the sales floor manager for Verizon in Manhattan and then in Wamego. &nbsp;Most recently she ran an in-home daycare and was a Scentsy Consultant.

Dawn loved spending time with her grandchildren, fishing, fish fries, camping and activities outdoors. &nbsp;She especially enjoyed her daycare kids. &nbsp;Dawn loved to decorate for the holidays, especially Christmas. &nbsp;She enjoyed family time and playing games, cleaning, organizing and entertaining. &nbsp;Dawn was an exceptional cook.

Dawn married Raymond S. Gross, Jr., on December 21, 1999 in Manhattan. He survives in their home.

David L. Moore, 80, of Westmoreland, Kansas, formerly of Olsburg and York, Nebraska, died Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

Dave was born on July 9, 1939, in rural Archer, Nebraska, the son of James and Mabel Stalker Moore. &nbsp;He attended local schools and graduated in 1958 from Monroe, Nebraska.

Dave farmed for Morris Farms and was a self-taught diesel mechanic. &nbsp;He owned and operated Moore Garage in Polk, Nebraska. He then owned and operated Nebraska Truck Service in York. Dave worked twenty-one years and retired from Sahling Kenworth in York. &nbsp;He then moved to Kansas and worked five years for Living Water Ranch in Olsburg before moving to Westmoreland.

Dave was an active member of Full Gospel Business Men and the York Assembly of God Church. &nbsp;In Kansas he was member of the Wamego Family Worship Center and served as a church board member. &nbsp;Dave was an avid Huskers and Atlanta Braves fan and passionate about attending all of his grandchildren’s events. &nbsp;In his earlier years he was a little league baseball coach.

Dave married Jacqueline Stone on August 18, 1990 in York. &nbsp;She survives at their home.

&nbsp;A beloved Son, Brother, Uncle, Friend, Cousin and Father, Carl Steven Meadows, 59, of Clay Center, Kansas left this world on February 11, 2020 after a courageous battle with Lung Cancer.

Carl was born in Lincoln Park, Michigan on February 22, 1960 to Earl and Joan Meadows. At an early age his family moved to Reseda, California where he grew up surrounded by a host of dear and cherished family members and friends. He attended Garden Grove Elementary School, Northridge Junior High School and Grover Cleveland High School. He was a proud Class of 1977 Cleveland Cavalier. In Carl’s youth he was an amazing baseball player and an all-around happy soul. He often spoke of many fond memories of growing up in the San Fernando Valley. In his early twenties he worked as an Aviation Machinist and was later blessed with two beautiful daughters, Katie and Kristi Meadows, of whom he spoke of daily and missed dearly. Carl later moved to Kansas in the late 90’s and made Clay Center his home. His world focused around his family, taking care of his cat Zocar, missing his late pets Smokey(Cat) and Bandit(Dog, daily calls to his father and checking in with his brother(Gary) and sister-in-law(Charlene) on how his two nieces, Jessica and Cassidy, were doing along with all the pets. Carl was a fanatic about listening to Classic 70’s Rock and had a memory of dates like no other. He looked forward to every holiday, birthday, family dinner along with summer barbeques. Carl’s father, Earl, took great care of him and was there for him no matter what and will deeply miss his multiple daily calls. A blessing and memory he will cherish in his heart forever. Gary and Carl had a strong brotherly bond that will remain thru eternity. The last conversation the brothers had went as such:

Gary: You know some day we will be in heaven and won’t have to worry about any of this sickness and you will get to see Mom.

In his early twenties he worked as an Aviation Machinist and was later blessed with two beautiful daughters, Katie and Kristi Meadows, of whom he spoke of daily and missed dearly. Carl later moved to Kansas in the late 90’s and made Clay Center his home. His world focused around his family, taking care of his cat Zocar, missing his late pets Smokey(Cat) and Bandit(Dog, daily calls to his father and checking in with his brother(Gary) and sister-in-law(Charlene) on how his two nieces, Jessica and Cassidy, were doing along with all the pets. Carl was a fanatic about listening to Classic 70’s Rock and had a memory of dates like no other. He looked forward to every holiday, birthday, family dinner along with summer barbeques. Carl’s father, Earl, took great care of him and was there for him no matter what and will deeply miss his multiple daily calls. A blessing and memory he will cherish in his heart forever. Gary and Carl had a strong brotherly bond that will remain thru eternity. Richard L. “Dick” Smith, 92, of Wamego, KS passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the Valley Vista Good Samaritan Society in Wamego.

On August 16, 1927, Dick, was born to Horace and Nellie (Hankammer) Smith in Alma, KS.&nbsp; He graduated from Wamego High School in 1945.&nbsp; He was united in marriage with Bonnie Stewart on October 4, 1945.&nbsp; She preceded him in death in 2012.

Dick was a lifetime farmer.&nbsp; He enjoyed spending time with family and friends on camping and fishing excursions.&nbsp; He also enjoyed his annual Colorado trips to pick peaches and the occasional casino visit.&nbsp; You could rely on locating Dick at the Kream Kup catching up on the local news over a cup of coffee.

He is survived by two children, Ric Smith (Joyce, Wamego, KS, and Boncilla Lowry, Westmoreland, KS; a sister-in-law, Susan Stewart, Wamego, KS; six grandchildren, Lorren Hill, Michelle Kennedy, Jeff Hill, Christine Oxner, Stephanie Smith, and Scott Smith; and fourteen great-grandchildren.

&nbsp;He is also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Clifford Smith.

LaDonna Mae Herman, 86, of Wamego, Kansas, died Tuesday, February 4, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp; Donna was born in their family home on a farm near Wells Creek, Kansas, on August 9, 1933 to Frank and Thelma Seele. The family moved to Wamego at the beginning of Donna’s freshman year. She graduated from Wamego High School in May of 1951. She married the love of her life, Paul Herman, that same month on May 28, 1951 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.

LaDonna and Paul spent most of their life in Wamego. When their children came along, Donna knew she had found her life’s joy. Being a mother and homemaker was what made her happy. There are so many wonderful memories of camping together as a young family with many friends. She had many hobbies such as gardening, sewing, quilting, cooking, along with many others.

She went to work at Wamego Central Elementary in 1964, when her daughter Lisa started school. First, in the kitchen for a couple of years, and then as a teacher’s aide helping to make their days run smoother. That lasted 3-4 years, when she became the school secretary. Many teachers…even the principal admit that she kept that school running like only three secretaries could.

She retired in 1996 after 32 years of service but stayed very busy. Donna was a member of many organizations. Heritage Club, Portia, Card Clubs, Wamego Senior Citizen Center, The Columbian Theater to name a few. She mostly loved volunteering at the Oz Museum. Nothing was better than spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband Paul Andrew Herman (2001) and a brother Alvin Seele.

&nbsp;Survivors include three children: Denny Herman and his wife Linda, Terry Herman and his wife Lori, Lisa Stockebrand and her husband Arlo, all of Wamego; two sisters: Maxine Harris of Raytown, Missouri, and Patricia Johnson of Dandridge, Tennessee. George William “Bill / Woody” Woodyard, age 87 of Riley, passed peacefully with his loving wife by his side on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.   

George was born November 20, 1932 at Home, Kansas to Linley Burton “LB” and Agnes Mae (Roush) Woodyard.  

George served in the Kansas National Guard from December 28, 1950 until June 18, 1952.  He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corp on June 19, 1952 and Honorably Discharged on June 18, 1955 as the rank of Sergeant.  George served his country in the Korean Conflict from January 10, 1953 until June 26, 1953.  

On June 29, 1958 at the First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan, he married the love of his life, Janice Edith Leipersberger.  She survives of the home with 61 years and 7 months of marriage.

George worked for Kansas Power and Light from 1950 until his retirement in 1987 with 37 years of service.  During his early time with KP&amp;L he served his country in the Armed Forces from December 1950 until June 1955.  He was a Journeyman Lineman and retired as a Line Foreman in 1987.  George always enjoyed his KP&amp;L family.  

George was a member of the IBEW 304, Lifetime Member of the VFW, Marine Corp League Desert Storm, Marysville Kansas, American Legion, Fairview Presbyterian Church and the Wednesday Morning coffee group “Liars club”.  He loved to camp, fish, work in the yard, check cattle and have a project in the works.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Melissa Ann and husband Ross Wahl of Riley and Christine Lynn and husband Neil Ridgway of Carolina Shores, North Carolina; four granddaughters, Taylor Elizabeth Anglin and husband Zach of Fort Collins, Colorado, Mackenzie Mae Wahl,  Abigail Applegate Wahl and Michaella Meyer Wahl all of Riley; one great granddaughter, Harper Leeann Anglin of Fort Collins, Colorado; three siblings, Edward Woodyard and wife Sharon, Rose Ann Magnuson and husband Don and Larry Woodyard all of Manhattan; several nieces, nephews, cousins and chosen family members across the United States of America.     

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert Woodyard and wife Mary; one sister, Shirley Baxter;  one sister-in-law, Nancy Woodyard; several nieces, nephews, great nephew and several dear friends.  

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2020 at the Fairview Presbyterian Church with Pastor Gerry Sharp and Rev. D. Erich Schwartz officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.  Burial with Military Honors will be in the Fairview Cemetery.

Noel Mattill Poersch, age 101 of Concordia, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at the Sunset Home in Concordia.

   

He was born on October 23, 1918 on a farm north of Barnes, where he lived with his parents, Frank and Laura (Sondker) Poersch for one year until they moved to the Fancy Creek area where he lived until 2011.  He attended Drager School and later Columbus at Bodaville.  He took the 8th grade twice at his dad’s recommendation and he said it helped him quite a bit as that was his last formal schooling.

He began farming with his dad at a young age and listing and plowing by the age of 12.  He milked cows before school and farmed the fields, growing crops, but was always drawn to milking cows and began a dairy herd in the late 1950’s.  He ran a Grade A Dairy in the 1970’s and 1980’s.&nbsp;
On June 29, 1941, he was married to Georgena Coonrod.  She preceded him in death in 1995.



He was a lifelong member of the Fancy Creek Zion United Methodist Church where he held many offices, but his greatest joy was teaching the young men’s Sunday School class for several years.  He served on the Barnes School Board in the 1960’s.  Noel was a kind man to family, friends and the staff at Sunset Home, who have adored him and will be missed greatly by all.



He is survived by three children, Arloa Beth Freeby and husband Byron of Austin, Texas, Sharyl Goering and husband Jake of Overland Park and Monte Poersch and wife Christine of Concordia; one sister, Phyllis Wohler of Topeka; one brother, Arris Poersch of Denver, Colorado; seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.&nbsp;
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.



Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2020 at the Fancy Creek Zion Cemetery with Bill Walsh officiating.  A celebration of his life will immediately follow the burial in the Fancy Creek Zion United Methodist Church.

Alice Marie (Hunsicker) Heine 78, passed away into her Saviors arms Friday morning February 7, 2020, in Franklin, North Carolina. In March 2019 she moved from Abilene, Kansas in with her daughter Karin where she lived the remainder of her life.

She was born to Glen West Hunsicker and Wilma Jean (Nichols) Hunsicker February 28, 1941 in Topeka, Kansas. Alice Hunsicker graduated with the class of 1959 from Topeka High School. Alice was married to Jerry Robert Heine June 29, 1963 in Topeka, Kansas. Alice worked for Southwestern Bell for many years retiring in 1980. She went on to work for United Telephone Company before enjoying her retirement years at home. Alice testified that she had received Jesus Christ as her Savior while living in Scranton, Kansas. After moving to Lyndon, Kansas and then on to Abilene, Kansas she started attending Abilene Bible Baptist Church. She was baptized there and became a longtime member. She taught 3 and 4 year old Sunday School there for many years. She loved the people of Abilene Bible Baptist Church as family. Alice loved working in her flower garden and had a love for horses, dogs, and cats.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, March 2014. Her parents Glen and Wilma Jean Hunsicker. Her infant brother Alan Dean Hunsicker. Two sisters Twyla Beth (Hunsicker) Cunningham and Sharon Jean (Hunsicker) Glassburner.

Alice is survived by two brothers and one sister. David Hunsicker (Nancy) of California, Gary Hunsicker (Carol) of Kansas, Marilyn (Hunsicker) Goldsleger (Alex) of Pennsylvania.

Alice is also survived by four daughters and one son. Lory (Heine) Cover of Washington, Karin (Heine) Hillman of North Carolina, Brenda (Heine) McNair of Kansas, Ginger Heine of Texas, and Joseph Heine (Rose) of Texas.

Grandchildren: Jason Cover, Wesley Cover (Brooke, Travis Cover (Antonia, Heather (Cover) Bernick (Skylar). Benjamin Hillman (Lauren, Josh Hillman, Jessica Hillman, Juliana Hillman.

Storm Didas, Nathan Didas (Christel, Willie McNair, Brianna McNair, Kaylynn McNair.

Jasmine Heine. Gracie Heine, Grant Heine, Thomas Heine.

In March 2019 she moved from Abilene, Kansas in with her daughter Karin where she lived the remainder of her life.She was born to Glen West Hunsicker and Wilma Jean (Nichols) Hunsicker February 28, 1941 in Topeka, Kansas. Alice Hunsicker graduated with the class of 1959 from Topeka High School. Alice was married to Jerry Robert Heine June 29, 1963 in Topeka, Kansas. Alice worked for Southwestern Bell for many years retiring in 1980. She went on to work for United Telephone Company before enjoying her retirement years at home. Alice testified that she had received Jesus Christ as her Savior while living in Scranton, Kansas. After moving to Lyndon, Kansas and then on to Abilene, Kansas she started attending Abilene Bible Baptist Church. She was baptized there and became a longtime member. She taught 3 and 4 year old Sunday School there for many years. She loved the people of Abilene Bible Baptist Church as family. Alice loved working in her flower garden and had a love for horses, dogs, and cats.Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry, March 2014. Her parents Glen and Wilma Jean Hunsicker. Her infant brother Alan Dean Hunsicker. Two sisters Twyla Beth (Hunsicker) Cunningham and Sharon Jean (Hunsicker) Glassburner.Alice is survived by two brothers and one sister. Patsy R. Nix, age 85, of Topeka, formerly of Abilene, passed away February 6, 2020 at the Presbyterian Manor in Topeka.

Patsy was born January 14, 1935 in Shamrock, Texas the daughter of RosaLee (Pruett) Bledsoe. She attended schools in Enid, Oklahoma, graduating from Memorial High Catholic School.

On April 4, 1959 Patsy married the love of her life, Cecil Nix in Medford, Oklahoma. They began their married life in Oklahoma, moving to Abilene, in the summer of 1976. Patsy worked as a medical transcriptionist for over 63 years, spending 32 years at the Abilene Family Physicians.

She is survived by her daughters, Tami Rodda of Topeka, Kansas, Teresa Nix of Abilene; son Doug Nix of Florida; two sisters Carolyn and her husband Richard Conrady and Joy Harrison both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; two brothers Butch Bledsoe of Enid, Oklahoma, and Bob Bledsoe and his wife Lucia of Jenks, Oklahoma; grandchildren Aaron and his wife Kristen Rodda, Joey Rodda, Kristen Rodda, Ethan and his wife Emily Heller, and Lucas Heller; great grandchildren Hudson and Bennett Rodda and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Cecil Nix, mother RosaLee Bledsoe; sister Charlotte Schultz, and one niece Sharon Mahan.

Steven Anthony Gunter, Abilene resident and co-owner of Midway Bar and Grill in Detroit, KS passed away unexpectedly Tuesday February 4th 2020 at the age of 38.

Steven grew up in Independence Missouri and Urbana Missouri. He honorably served his country as a Petroleum Supply Specialist in the United States Army. Following his release from the military he was a man of many trades; from line cook to construction to candy maker to forklift driver to fishing the Bering Sea in Alaska. His final career as co-owner of Midway Bar and Grill was where he found that customers became friends... and those friends became family. During his time there he was an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, and a driver when someone “over indulged”.&nbsp; He was the biker that would hold a mother’s child so she could finish her meal, the friend that would replace your tire or battery after he made you a burger. He was the man that would save a stray kitten, stop and pull a turtle out of the road and take it to safety, and always stopped to check on a stranded motorist. He was the husband that wanted everything for his wife, the father that raised his wife’s children as his own and he became a father figure to many other kids in the community… especially Faith Everhart and Matthew Hamm. He was the son that loved all his parents, biological and otherwise and the brother that would drop anything for his sisters. He was the grandfather of two and loved nothing more than spending time with and spoiling his grandbabies. He was a member of the Herington American Legion post 12 and American Legion Riders Chapter 12. It was there and at his bar he learned that family isn’t just blood, that it’s the people he stood by and helped and the same people that are now standing by his family. He never hesitated to lend a hand or organize a fundraiser or simply ask “what can I do?” He was his family’s rock, a true friend and his kind heart and generosity will live on.

Steven was proceeded in death by his father Victor Nave, sister Tracy Perryman, and brother Thomas Gunter. He left behind his wife of fifteen years Anna Gunter. His children Kayla Marie Hillers, Katherine Elizabeth Graham, and Anthony Jules Ny-Graham. The children he considered his own Faith Ronae Everhart and Matthew Kristopher Hamm. His grandchildren Roylee Grace Everhart and Braylon Zander Albertson. His parents Penny Perryman and Alice and Joe Gunter and sisters Robyn Yancey, Debra Gunter and Janice Crowe. He also left behind his Midway family and his biker brothers and sisters.

A service will be held on Saturday February 15th at 1 p.m. at the National Guard Armory located at 1009 NW 8th Street in Abilene, KS. Mary died Saturday, February 8, 2020 in Manhattan, Kansas. She was born in Canadian, Texas on March 15, 1924, the daughter of Wallace Scott and Orilla May (Haughey) Culbertson. She attended schools in Derby, Kansas and Canadian, Texas. She excelled in basketball all four years of high school. She attended Bethany College at Lindsborg, KS for two years studying music. She taught elementary school for one year in Glazier, TX on a war certificate.

Mary was married on June 24, 1944, in Jacksonville, FL to Ensign Leo Joseph Johnson, a U. S. Navy flight instructor. The union was blessed with two sons, Leo Scott Johnson and Marc Anton Johnson. After WWII the family farmed south of Wichita, KS. They later divorced when their sons were grown.

She taught elementary school in Derby, KS, and served as secretary to the Derby Schools Superintendent. From 1964, she served as a medical social worker at St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita, KS for 23 years. In 1988, she retired and moved to Manhattan, KS to help care for her grandson, Lee Johnson.

Mary loved her family above all else. Other interest were friends made during her life journey, music, art, bridge, sports and her dogs and cats. Over the years she sang, played piano and directed church choir and children’s programs. She loved to travel, visiting many European countries, Canada, Mexico and Colombia.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Wilma Roberta (Bert) Daily and by her three dogs (Spencer, Max and Teddy) and a cat (Lucky). She is survived by two sons: Scott Johnson, Sugar Creek, MO and Dr. Marc Johnson and (Dr. Karen Penner, Reno, NV; three grandchildren: Joseph (Lee) Johnson and (Valerie Slayton, Columbia, MO, Allison Disbrow, Manhattan, KS, and Ashley and (Adrian) Coberly, Gove, KS; six grandchildren: Brooklyn and Easton Disbrow, Carrie Slayton, Marc and Leo Johnson, Charley Coberly; a nephew Stuart and (Anita) Daily, Spokane Valley, WA, and Linda Daily, Colorado Springs, CO; and her cat, Lewis.

Mary was very thankful for all of the dedicated professionals who provided such expert medical care and support for herself and pets. She also treasured her faithful friends and long-time housekeeper Laurie, as well as her daily caregivers who became endeared to her.

There will be no services. Cremation is planned and her family will scatter her ashes, along with those of her beloved, deceased dogs and cats at a later time. Alice June (Henton) O’Malley Anderson of Berryton, Kansas, passed away on February 5, 2020, at the University of Kansas – St. Francis Hospital. Alice was surrounded by her family for whom she provided so much love and care in her lifetime.

Alice was born in Manhattan, Kansas on October, 8, 1950, to John Eldon and Evelyn Mae (Kinman) Henton and grew up in the Zeandale area. She attended the Tabor Valley School before finishing elementary school in Zeandale. Alice graduated from Wamego High School in 1968 and attended flight attendant school in Kansas City. Alice’s career path started at Kansas State University and culminated in her retirement from the Department of Revenue where she was instrumental in implementing and instructing all county appraisers on computer software for real property appraisal.

In December 1969, Alice married John E. O’Malley, in Manhattan, Kansas, and they had two sons, Shawn and John Paul. Alice and John later divorced. On May 15, 1987, Alice married Donald K. Anderson in Topeka and she welcomed Don’s children, Sarah and Scott, to the family. Alice and Don were inseparable during their 33 years together, from driving to work together every day to camping and attending bluegrass music events. Alice was a regular roadie, sound board operator and merch manager for Don’s bluegrass bands. In retirement, they took up golfing together and were routinely found on the links, followed by a happy hour with friends.

Alice gave mightily to her community. The bluegrass community will remember Alice as a dedicated member and leader. She served as the Treasurer of the Kansas Prairie Pickers Association and helped organize its events including, the Auburn Jams, the Prairie Lake Festival in Holton, Kansas each June, and wrote a regular article for the KPPA newsletter. Alice also crocheted and donated hundreds of blankets, as a “Blanketeer” for the Topeka Chapter of Project Linus for children in Northeast Kansas hospitals and foster care.

Alice loved her family. She was a dedicated daughter to her parents and her mother-in-law, Erma Miller, in their later years. She enjoyed many fishing trips and cruises with her siblings. Alice strove to care for and support her children, as youths and as they built their own families, in any way she could. Above all else, Alice was an exceptional “Baga” to her grandchildren, never turning down an opportunity to attend sporting events, dance recitals, and music performances.

With the support of her family, Alice bravely fought ovarian cancer for the last eight months. She did not let her diagnosis and treatment define her.

Alice is survived by her husband, Don, sons; Shawn (Michele) O’Malley, Shawnee, Kansas; John Paul (Kathy) O’Malley, Manhattan, Kansas; Scott (Hillary) Anderson, Olathe, Kansas; and daughter Sarah (Chuck) Glanville, Lenexa, Kansas. Baga will be dearly missed by her grandchildren – Tyler, Jack, Jordan, Sam, Clare, Gus and Violet. And her faithful companion Charlie Dog. Arlin Glen Sarff, age 97, of Manhattan Kansas, left this life on Sunday the 9th of February while at the Good Shepard Hospice in Manhattan.

Arlin Glen Sarff, son of Glen and Irma Sarff of Miles City, Montana was born November 12, 1922, in Miles City. He graduated from Custer County High School in 1940. He lived there until he entered the U.S. Army and spent five years serving his country during World War II.

Arlin was an accomplished musician having played saxophone, clarinet, and piano. He was a member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps in Miles City along with being in the City band and entertained at many social events in the area.

After the war, Arlin returned to Miles City and was married to Jean Danforth of Miles City in 1946. They had one son Dana. The couple moved to Seattle Washington in 1947 where Arlin began work with Boeing Aircraft Company and worked for them for the next 35 years. He worked in various departments for Boeing and his work compiling a Master File of all Boeing service bulletins was used by Boeing service departments all over the world. Upon retirement from Boeing in 1983 Arlin was awarded special recognition from Boeing for his outstanding contributions and service over the years.

In his retirement, Arlin continued his music having his own band and was a popular performer in the Seattle area. His wife Jean passed away in 1987.

In 1990 while attending a High School reunion in Miles City, he was reunited with Zona Gale Dennis whom he had dated in High School. They were married in 1991 and spent three years living in Seattle before moving back to Manhattan, Kansas where Zona Gale had lived and taught for 20 years.

Arlin was a member of the American Legion, The First United Methodist Church, and the American Musicians Union.

Graveside services will be in Miles City, Montana at a later date.
