Hedberg, 67 died February 21, 2024, in Clay Center, KS. &nbsp;He was born on December 30, 1956, in Wichita, the son of Ronald D. and Mary (Cranmer) Hedberg. &nbsp;Ronnie was a graduate of the class of 1976 from CCCHS. &nbsp;He worked as a forklift operator at Hutchinson-Mayrath, operated a road grader for Clay County Road Department and was a pipeline surveyor for many years. &nbsp;Ronnie was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Clay Center. &nbsp;He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching the grandchildren’s activities. &nbsp;In his free time, you could find Ronnie playing softball, fishing, or drinking Coors Light. &nbsp;He was preceded in death by his parents.

Glenda “Jill” Irene Cooper Spohn, passed away on November 15, 2023, at the age of 78 in Abilene, Kansas.

She was born on June 22, 1945, in Wichita, Kansas, daughter of Glenn and Dorcas Evans Cooper. Theoldest of four, Jill, was active in Campfire Girls and St. James Episcopal Church in Wichita, Kansas. She graduated from Southeast High in 1963 and continued her education at Emporia State University.&nbsp; While attending ESU, Jill met Jerold Spohn, and the two married December 20, 1965. They had a strong marriage of 57 years and were a positive example of upholding marriage vows. One of their favorite things to do was to pick out anniversary cards for one another each year. After a few years of marriage, the couple settled in White City, Kansas, where they grew their family and raised 6 children - 3 boys and 3 girls. They moved to the house on Garfield Street in 1982 and lived there for the next 36 years.

Jill worked as the secretary of White City Schools for a number of years before staying home to raise her&nbsp; children. In 1992 Jill graduated from Emporia State University, with her degree in Secondary Education in History. It was important to her to finish what she had started and demonstrated perseverance and sacrifice as she completed her degree. Her last place of employment before retirement was with Central National Bank in Junction City. Jill’s children were her pride and joy and she could always be counted on to be in attendance at any of their&nbsp; sporting events, 4-H activities, or church functions. In her free time, Jill enjoyed gardening, growing flowers,and reading. She could be found nearly every Saturday at the local library. Jill regularly participated in an&nbsp; EHU group for women, served on various church committees, and was a very active member of local and county 4-H boards throughout the years the family resided in White City. When grandchildren began to come along, Jill was delighted. She was known to send cards full of stickers to them and always had a new toy to play with when they would visit. Some of the most meaningful days to Jill were the days her entire family would gather together for a family reunion in the summer or at the holidays in December.

In 2019, Jerry and Jill moved to the Chapman/Abilene area. During these last few years, Jill’s family watched as Alzheimer’s invaded her mind and she slowly lost her ability to remember all things. Though she grew incapable of remembering, those who love her the most will remember her for how supportive, devoted, and loving she was as a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Jill is survived by her loving husband, Jerold Spohn, her children Jerold Spohn Jr. (Reva), Bryon Spohn, Michael Spohn (Erin), Barbara Boggs (Matt), Jennifer Hickman (Daniel), and Susan Monnier (Mark). She is&nbsp; also survived by 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Jill was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Dorcas Cooper, and her sister, Jeanne Hoffman.

A private graveside memorial service will be held at a later date. Following the service, a reception will beheld at the White City Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Patricia Lynn (Crownhart) Hanson, age 78, of Overland Park, Kansas and formerly of Manhattan, passed away February 20, 2024 at the Kansas City Hospice House in Kansas City.

She was born on February 13, 1946 in Kansas City, the daughter of Floyd and Pauline (Meares) Crownhart. She attended schools in the Kansas City area and graduated from North Kansas City High School with the class of 1964. Patricia then attended Kansas State University and earned her bachelor’s degree in education. She later attended Mid America Nazarene and earned her Master’s Degree in education.

On June 10, 1967 in Kansas City, she was united in marriage to Leon S. Hanson. He survives at their home in Overland Park.

Patricia was a teacher for many years. She taught at Leawood Middle School in Leawood, Kansas, and also at schools in Grandview, Missouri and Junction City, Kansas. She enjoyed helping kids learn and watching them grow. She was a member of the St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Manhattan.

She was preceded in death by her sister Kathleen Gleason and brother-in-law Thomas Gleason.

In addition to her husband Steve, she is survived by her daughter Amanda DeVolder (Jeffrey); her grandchildren: Emory, Tucker, and Tillie; and her brother Floyd Crownhart (Mary); and her many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 2, 2024 at the Colbert Hills Clubhouse, 5200 Colbert Hills Drive, Manhattan, Kansas 66503.

Renda Ann McInteer, age 51, died February 19, 2024, at the University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus in Topeka.

She was born August 1, 1972, in Manhattan, the daughter of Richard L. and Michelle (Parshall) McInteer.

Renda had been a longtime resident of the Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka.

She enjoyed going out to eat, picnics, swimming, all music, and going to concerts and to Great Wolf Lodge with KNI. She loved her weekends spent with her dad at his house in Wamego.

Survivors include her father Richard and his wife Jeannette of Wamego, KS; her mother Michelle Colle of East Lake, OH; and one brother Jamie McInteer of Emporia. The family wants to thank her adopted grandmother Lee for her special care and love for Renda.

Cremation is planned with private family services.

Kenneth Carl Sack, age 73, of Manhattan, passed away Saturday February 17, 2024 at the Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas.

Ken was born on July 26, 1950 in Manhattan, the son of Carl and Marie (Flanary) Sack. He attended Manhattan Catholic Schools and graduated from Msgr. Luckey High School with the class of 1968. He then attended Manhattan Area Technical College and earned his degree in HVAC, graduating in 1970.

Ken worked at Kansas State University starting in 1978, first in facilities doing air conditioning and maintenance, and then from 1989 until 2016 he was a research assistant and an electronic technician in the biology department. When he transferred to biology he repaired and maintained their lab equipment such as their electron microscope, autoclaves and water filtration systems. He also helped in multiple labs. He retired after 39 years at KSU. He also worked and taught classes at AIB in Manhattan for many years.

He was a social guy who always had a good joke to tell. He would be seen at the Senior Center and the Community Meals, always visiting and wanting to talk with others. Ken volunteered with the Boy Scouts and also for a period of time with BeAble in Manhattan.

Ken is survived by his good friend Melissa Perez of the home. He is also survived by his many family members and friends, all who will miss seeing Ken and sharing stories with him.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday February 26 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

The Rosary will be read following the visitation at 7:00 p.m. Monday February 26 at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday February 27 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Manhattan, with Father Gale Hammerschmidt as Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Viola Mae Welter, 93, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday (February 20, 2024) at Vintage Park in Wamego.

Born December 1, 1930 in Humboldt, Nebraska, Viola was the daughter of Wayne C. and Ethel L. (McFall) Lee.She married Lyman “Cloyde” Welter on May 1, 1948 in Holton, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 19, 2012.

Viola was a member of the Wamego United Methodist Church. She loved sewing, crocheting, knitting and working with ceramics. &nbsp;She shared many of her projects with others and will be especially remembered for making her special homemade ice cream in the old crank style ice cream maker on weekends and at her many family reunions and for the many afghans she made for her family. &nbsp;She enjoyed collecting Avon bottles and her costume jewelry. Viola loved to work in her garden and her most fond memories were the times they spent at the Welter Farm in Flush and spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Viola had been employed as a cook for the Wamego School District and as a babysitter. &nbsp;She later was a Nurses Aid for several years until her retirement.&nbsp;

Survivors include three daughters, Elda Seener (Tom) of Washington, MO, Marcella Matson of Eldon, MO and Karen Arace of Eldon, MO; a son, Randy Lee Welter of Manhattan, KS; ten grandchildren; and many loving&nbsp; great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

&nbsp;Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Cloyde; two sons in law, Frank Matson and Nick Arace; and a brother, Carroll Lee and his wife Ineva.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon (February 22, 2024) at 1:00 at Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego with Pastor Alex Rossow officiating. &nbsp;Burial will be in Wamego City Cemetery.

The family will meet with friends on Thursday afternoon from 12:30 until the time of services at the funeral home.&nbsp;

Viola Mae Welter

LaMont (Monty) E. Godsey, born on May 31, 1939, in Holton, Kansas, peacefully passed away February 16, 2024, in Pearland, Texas. He was the beloved son of DeVere E. Godsey and Eunice L. (Stowell) Godsey.

LaMont is survived by his devoted wife, Brenda Kay (Stutsman), and their loving children:

DeLome D. Fair (husband John) of Pearland, TX; LaMont G. Godsey of Seattle, WA; and Brett T. Godsey (husband James) of St. Paul, MN. He was a cherished grandfather to Evan Fair (wife Kayleigh) of Houston, TX, and leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

LaMont and Brenda's love story began at a young age, dating from the time they were 14 and 13, respectively. They were united in marriage on September 4, 1960, and their enduring love became an inspiration to many.

LaMont dedicated an impressive 46 years of his life to the field of education. His career began as a teacher in 1962 in Cleveland, Ohio, before returning to Kansas to teach drafting in Junction City, KS. He played a vital role as the assistant and head wrestling coach for 15 years, contributing to the success of the JCHS wrestling team, which secured State Championships in 1979, 1980, and 1982. In 1988, he transitioned to the role of Associate Principal at Junction City High School, where he served until his retirement in 2000.

Post-retirement, LaMont continued his commitment to education by serving on the Board of Education for Geary County Unified School District. During his second term, he held the position of President of the Board of Education, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the betterment of the education system in Junction City and Ft. Riley.

LaMont celebrated 39 years in recovery this January and spent those years helping countless others with their own recoveries through his fellowship in AA.

LaMont was well known for his humor, particularly the jokes that he sometimes told more than once. An avid sports enthusiast, LaMont took great joy in supporting multiple teams, including the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Houston Rockets, Houston Texans, and the Cleveland Browns.

In 2008, LaMont and Brenda made Pearland, Texas, their home to be closer to family. LaMont will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the positive impact he made on the lives of those he touched.

A celebration of his life will be held on June 29, 2024, in Junction City, KS, at the Courtyard By Marriot. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children (www.shrinerschildrens.org).

He was a cherished grandfather to Evan Fair (wife Kayleigh) of Houston, TX, and leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.LaMont and Brenda's love story began at a young age, dating from the time they were 14 and 13, respectively. They were united in marriage on September 4, 1960, and their enduring love became an inspiration to many.LaMont dedicated an impressive 46 years of his life to the field of education. His career began as a teacher in 1962 in Cleveland, Ohio, before returning to Kansas to teach drafting in Junction City, KS. He played a vital role as the assistant and head wrestling coach for 15 years, contributing to the success of the JCHS wrestling team, which secured State Championships in 1979, 1980, and 1982. In 1988, he transitioned to the role of Associate Principal at Junction City High School, where he served until his retirement in 2000.Post-retirement, LaMont continued his commitment to education by serving on the Board of Education for Geary County Unified School District. During his second term, he held the position of President of the Board of Education, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the betterment of the education system in Junction City and Ft. Riley.LaMont celebrated 39 years in recovery this January and spent those years helping countless others with their own recoveries through his fellowship in AA.LaMont was well known for his humor, particularly the jokes that he sometimes told more than once. An avid sports enthusiast, LaMont took great joy in supporting multiple teams, including the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Houston Rockets, Houston Texans, and the Cleveland Browns.In 2008, LaMont and Brenda made Pearland, Texas, their home to be closer to family. LaMont will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the positive impact he made on the lives of those he touched.A celebration of his life will be held on June 29, 2024, in Junction City, KS, at the Courtyard By Marriot. Eldora Mae Wunder, 83, of Vermillion, South Dakota formerly of Junction City, Kansas died on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota.

The family will receive friends Friday, February 23, 2024, from 10-11 a.m at Johnson Funeral Home. A graveside service will immediately follow the visitation at 11:30 a.m. at Milford Cemetery. Pastor Ronnie Roberts will officiate.

Eldora was born August 15, 1940, in Ogden, Kansas the daughter of Harold Edgar and Blanche LaVeta (Cumming) Johnson. Eldora was a homemaker in Junction City for many years where she raised her children. She also worked as a cashier for Food 4 Less Grocery Store and Walmart. She enjoyed helping and visiting with her customers at Walmart. She took interest in their families and always wanted to make sure they were doing okay. Eldora also enjoyed playing bingo, often going more than once a week. Eldora loved her grand babies very much. She often would worry about their whereabouts, even when she wasn't able to get up and go see what they were up to. She always knew their common schedules and she was always the first one to realize if they were late. On January 31, 1958, she married LeRoy (Carl) Wunder. He died November 3, 2008.

Eldora is survived by her loving sons, Tony Wunder and his wife Sarah of Vermillion, South Dakota, Terry Wunder and his wife Lisa of Girard, Kansas and Tim Wunder and his wife Kathy of Milford, Kansas. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Nicole, Aaron, Ariel, Jarrett, Michelle, Cayden, Carson and Camryn; four great-grandchildren, Conner, Camden, Trace and Emma; many cousins, nieces, nephews and a handful of very close friends. She was born November 1, 1930, in Enterprise, Dickinson County, Kansas to Martin Edward Arthur Peterson and Grace Esther (Picking) Peterson. Teena married Clyde Frank Krause in 1949. After spending time in Kansas City and Georgia, the family moved to Hutchinson, Kansas in 1959, where she lived for the next 65 years. They divorced in the early 1960s and she joined the workforce, starting as a gift-wrapper at Sears. She retired from Sears in the 1990s. From the time she moved to Hutchinson, she was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. She loved to travel, and she loved her family. Traveling with her sister, Leona, was one of her favorite pastimes. Together, they traveled all over the United States.

She is survived by one sister, Mary Esther Bever, three of her children, including son Greggory Allen Krause of Hutchinson, daughter Susan Koren Burdick of Texas, and son Jeffrey Neil Krause of Hutchinson, grandchildren Rachel Ann Swartz (John) of Texas, Benjamin Paul Krause (Tara) of Texas, and Heather Donnell Madrigill (Ed) of Kansas City, several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and life-long friends. She was proceeded in death by her parents, three sisters, Beverly Anne Krisher, Leona Ruth Blodgett, and Connie Marie Amburgy, son Martin Paul Krause, grandson Jeremy Allen Burdick, and great-grandson Lucas Aaron Swartz.

Matilda Jane (Porter) Scott

Martha J. Minihan, 80, of Blaine, Kansas, died Saturday (February 17, 2024) at the Onaga Community Hospital. &nbsp;

Born August 17, 1943 in Topeka, Kansas, Martha was the daughter of Hugh and Irene (Firestone) Priddy. She married Joseph Francis Minihan on August 24, 1963 in Topeka, Kansas. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on November 24, 2022.

Active in her faith, Martha was a member of St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society of St. Columbkille. &nbsp;She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing and cooking. &nbsp;She will be remembered for her fried chicken and her cake with her chocolate coffee frosting.

Martha was devoted to raising her family and helping on the family farm.&nbsp;

&nbsp;She is survived by her daughter; Karen Ebert (Kyle) of St. Mary; &nbsp;her sons; Joseph Michael Minihan of Blaine, Kevin Patrick Minihan (Cathy) of Blaine, Mark Allen Minihan (Carol) of Wheaton, and Gerald Francis Minihan (Christi) of Rossville; her thirteen grandchildren, T. J. Kyler Elliott Stevens, born March 23, 2019, age 4, passed away and went to his heavenly home while surrounded by his family at 2:26 p.m. on February 14, 2024.

Kyler was the adopted son of Christopher and Amber Stevens of Milford, KS. He is survived by his siblings Emily, Caden, Keira, and biological brother Aiden. He was loved deeply by all his family.

 While on Earth, Kyler enjoyed Disney music, watching Moana and game shows, being loved on by his siblings, and held by his parents and grandparents. While his Earthly body created great limitations on him, he found ways to bring joy to all those who encountered him, and though his time on this Earth was short, the impact he made on others will resonate for a lifetime. He will be missed greatly by all family and friends. He proceeds into Heaven to join his grandfather Edward Simon, who left too soon but said he would wait for Kyler to take him home.

The family would like to thank all the doctors and staff who have worked with Kyler over the years. Especially those who attended to him in the Pediatric ICU at Children’s Mercy Hospital, who’s care, support, encouragement, and devotion to their jobs, allowed the family to find peace at a difficult time. The family would also like to thank the teachers and staff at the Early Childhood Center, who helped Kyler have experiences the same as other kids, working with him to learn how to communicate with his family, and teaching him how to find his voice. A special thank you to the many care providers through the TA waiver that have helped ensure that Kyler had the supports necessary to make the gains he did and remain with his family for as long as possible.

Memorials will be received to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Kansas City and Give Kids the World Village in Orlando, Florida.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kyler Elliott Stevens

Betty Marie Fritz, age 97 of Leonardville, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Leonardville Nursing Home.

She was born on September 8, 1926, on the family farm near Green, the daughter of William and Antonia (Biegert) Friederich.

On June 24, 1947, she married Charles Nanninga. &nbsp;They had five children: Charlotte, Kathy, Don, Ron, and Carroll. &nbsp;He preceded her in death in 1967. &nbsp;She later married Milton Malmstrom and he preceded her in death.

She married Gilbert Fritz on April 14, 1972, and they were married 39 years until his death in 2011.

Betty was a secretary for the National Development Company early in her working career. &nbsp;She was the Leonardville City Clerk for 30 years and worked for the Leonardville Nursing Home. &nbsp;She was awarded the Leonardville Citizen of the Year for all that she did for the community. &nbsp; Betty was a huge sports fan, following the KC Royals, all K-State sports, and the KC Chiefs. &nbsp;She enjoyed playing bingo two days a week and looked forward to her weekly hair appointment.

She is survived by four children, Kathy Nanninga of Derby, Don Nanninga and wife Nancy of Leonardville, Ron Nanninga and wife Donna of Abilene, and Carroll Nanninga of Dallas, Texas; two stepsons, David Fritz and wife Doris of Riley, and Alan Fritz and wife Brenda of Manhattan; one sister, Dorothy Llewelyn of Leonardville; ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands and her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Charlotte Bentley; one brother, Robert Friederich, and her granddaughter, Trisha Caley.

Cremation is planned and a Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.

Betty Marie Fritz

Terry Brew Baker, age 77, of Blue Rapids, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024, at his home in Blue Rapids.

Terry was born on January 21, 1947 in Marysville, KS to Betty Ruth (Jewell) Walsh and R.J. Baker. His dad was Wayne Talbot and his stepfather was Bob Walsh. &nbsp; He graduated from Blue Rapids High School in 1965, then later joined the US Army, where he served in Korea. &nbsp;On April 3, 1970, he married Mary Alice Yungeberg at the United Methodist Church in Blue Rapids.

Terry worked for many years at Stanley’s Hy-Klas grocery store in Blue Rapids. In 1978 he began working for Georgia Pacific in Blue Rapids and remained there until his retirement in 2010. While working at GP he held several positions in both the board and plaster plants but spent much of that time as the board plant knife operator. Terry was a member of the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church, the George Bedford American Legion Post 169 in Blue Rapids, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and had served on the Blue Rapids Volunteer Fire Department. He was very proud of being both a military veteran, and resident of his hometown Blue Rapids.

Terry was an avid Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas State fan. He and Mary enjoyed attending Kansas State women’s basketball games and even had season tickets for several seasons. For many years you could find him at every 2A High School State Basketball Tournament game, with his brother-in-law Jerry Yungeberg. Whether the games were in Topeka, or later Manhattan, they would be there sitting in the front row. He loved to follow his kids and grandkids sporting activities whether it was cheerleading, football, basketball, or baseball. &nbsp;You might say he loved sports. He also enjoyed hunting mushrooms, and reading western novels, with Louis L’Amour being his favorite author.

Survivors include his wife Mary Alice, a daughter Stacey (Jason) Whiting, a son Mark (Cara) Baker, four grandchildren: Brittani (Derrik) Russell, Tanner (Krystal) Whiting, Devin (Olivia) Argo, and Landen Baker.

Preceding Terry in death are his parents: Betty Walsh, RJ Baker, Wayne Talbot and Bob Walsh.

A viewing will be held noon to 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2024, with visitation between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Christie-Anderes Funeral Home in Waterville.

Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, February 24, 2024, at the United Methodist Church in Blue Rapids, with Pastor Berniece Ludlum officiating. &nbsp;Music is to include recorded selections of “On Eagle’s Wings”, “Go Rest High on That Mountain” and “Mr. Lonely”. &nbsp;The musician will be Althea Wertz. &nbsp;Burial will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery, north of Blue Rapids. &nbsp;Military Honors at the cemetery will be provided by an Honors Detail from the US Army and the George Bedford American Legion Post 169.

Daniel Oren Woellhof, age 69 of Lakin, passed away Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

He was born on June 30, 1954, in Clay Center, the son of Oren Lynn and Arlene (Weller) Woellhof.

Dan grew up in Clay Center and attended Clay Center Community High School and later earned a Master's degree from Pittsburg State University. &nbsp;Dan began his teaching career in Chapman and then Leon before moving to Lakin and taught automotive tech, small engines, and welding, retiring after 43 years. &nbsp;During his time teaching and even during retirement, Dan drove an activity bus for Lakin and Deerfield, helping to support sports and activities. &nbsp;

Dan was a longtime member of the Lakin Wesleyan Church, later renamed New Life Church. &nbsp;He was a friend to many and held many positions throughout the community, school, and church. &nbsp;In his retirement, Dan also enjoyed visiting and reconnecting with people at the Kearny County Senior Center.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Woellhof of Lakin; three sons, Danny Woellhof and wife Pam of Garden City, Matthew Woellhof of Clay Center and Ernie Cruz and wife Shanna of Texas; four daughters, Lovena Woellhof of Lakin, Jessica Woellhof of Lakin, Jerica Woellhof of Dodge City, and Enedina Woellhof of California; 21 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings.

A memorial service will be held at New Life Church in Lakin on March 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. &nbsp;A service and burial will be planned at a later date in Clay Center. &nbsp;

Helen Marie Yarrow, 96, of Clay Center, Kan., entered the loving presence of her Savior on Saturday, February 10, 2024. She was 96 years old. Helen was born on July 30, 1927, on the family farm in Clay Center, Kan., the daughter of Charles Yarrow and Gertrude Cowell. After graduating from high school in 1945, Helen passed her teacher’s examination and taught at a one-room country school—Garfield School, District 91—in Clay County.

An avid pianist, Helen gave piano lessons to many students and also enjoyed sharing her talent with others. She played piano for several churches in Clay Center including the Covenant Church, the Bible Church, Faith Mission, and the Bible Presbyterian Church. In addition, Helen ministered through music to residents of Medicalodge and the Presbyterian Manor.

Although Helen faced many challenges throughout her lifetime, she could often be found walking around Clay Center or enjoying a meal at the old Cedar Court restaurant. She was always thankful for the many neighbors and friends who assisted her or took time out of their day to greet her.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Frances (Ellis) Sollie, her brother Roy (Miriam) Yarrow, and her nephew-in-law James Wine. She is survived by five nieces: Ann Wine of Sacramento, Calif., Deborah (James) Kemper of Oconomowoc, Wis.; M. Ruth (Gregory) Pirrie of Hales Corner, Wis.; Melody (Kenneth) Alvarez of Wheaton, Ill.; and Luann (Raymond) Doman of Wheaton, Ill. She is also survived by great nieces Melissa (Jerry) Siewert, Jenna (Isaac) Wilson, Rebecca Wine, and Savannah Kemper; and great nephew Jackson Doman.

Phyllis Sherbert, 82 died February 16, 2024, in Chapman, KS. &nbsp;She was born on February 11, 1942, in Wakefield, KS the daughter of Albert and Patricia (Reed) Pittenger. Phyllis was raised in the Wakefield community. &nbsp;She married William Sherbert on October 14, 1962. &nbsp;Phyllis farmed with her husband and operated Sherbert Kennels for many years. &nbsp;She enjoyed gardening and canning produce through the summer and fall. &nbsp;In her free time, Phyllis enjoyed camping with her family. &nbsp;She was a devoted mother and grandmother, regularly attending school programs and 4-H events. &nbsp;She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Phillip Pittenger.

Phyllis Sherbert

Ralph Ivan Maddox of White City,KS, left his earthly home to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday, February 15, 2024, at the age of 93 after a short stay at Via Christi Village, Manhattan KS.

Ralph was born July 5, 1930, in New Raymer, CO to Terrell and Jenny (Botts) Maddox. Growing up he worked with his father in a hauling business and later was employed in construction from 1948 to 1952. On July 20, 1950, he married the love of his life, Joyce Todd in Benkelman, NE. Ralph served as Corporal in the US Army, from 1952 to 1954 and stationed near Cavite City, Philippines, he was notified of the death of his infant son Alan. He was given leave to return to the States and in 1955 they moved to Junction City, KS with their one-year-old daughter, Jan. The couple was also blessed with two sons, Danny and Jeff. In 1969, Ralph moved his family to White City. 

Ralph was employed with civil service at Marshall Field, Ft. Riley, KS as Coordinator of Aircraft Maintenance for 27 years, retiring in 1982.&nbsp; He started painting and remodeling homes in the area until he took a position with White City Schools as head custodian from 1988 to 1992. In 1992, he returned to carpentering to help his daughter and son-in-law build a new home. Ralph was a volunteer EMT for Morris County Ambulance Service logging over 10,000 hours during his 10 years of service; a volunteer firefighter for fourteen years; served on the White City Council for 8 years; served at the chairperson for the White City Centennial Celebration in 1985; he was a dedicated Red Cross blood donor; served on the board of trustees of the White City United Methodist Church; served on the White City Library board; was member of the Teddy L. Wilde #299 American Legion Post for 21 years where he served as commander for two years and finance officer for six years. More recently, he volunteered at the Rolling Hills Senior Center, White City. 

Ralph was always willing to help his neighbors and his community. He had a kind heart and was very well-liked by those who knew him well.He loved woodworking and was an accomplished carpenter. Ralph and Joyce enjoyed bowling, dancing, bingo and playing cards. He was an avid reader of Louis L’Amour. His family kidded him because he should have been a cowboy. Traveling with Joyce to family reunions was always special. He enjoyed spending time with his grand and great grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by his infant son Alan, a brother Lynn Maddox, his parents, a sister Shirley Hollars, grandson-in-law Chance Sanderson and wife, Joyce. Survivors include Children: Jan (Richard) Gustason, White City; Danny (Brenda) Maddox, Marion, KS; Jeff (Kerry) Maddox, White City. Grandchildren: Malia (Jode) Dennison, Branson MO; Kelly Sanderson (fiance Jeff Johnson), Abilene KS; J. Kyle Maddox and Jordan Maddox, White City; Todd Maddox, Marion; Allison Maddox, Overland Park KS; Drew (Ashley) Maddox, Olathe KS; Kandice Orr (fiance Phillip Weir) Ardmore, OK and Michael Gustason, Manhattan KS. Great-Grandchildren: Kylie, Casen, and Corbin Sanderson; Avery and Carter Orr; Avery and Grayson Maddox; a sister, Carole Ann Wurtz, Pueblo, CO; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rudy and Janet Todd, LaSalle CO and Larry and Vonda Brown, Lakewood CO along with many nieces and nephews and their families.

More recently, he volunteered at the Rolling Hills Senior Center, White City. Ralph was always willing to help his neighbors and his community. He had a kind heart and was very well-liked by those who knew him well.He loved woodworking and was an accomplished carpenter. Ralph and Joyce enjoyed bowling, dancing, bingo and playing cards. He was an avid reader of Louis L’Amour. His family kidded him because he should have been a cowboy. Traveling with Joyce to family reunions was always special. He enjoyed spending time with his grand and great grandchildren.Ralph was preceded in death by his infant son Alan, a brother Lynn Maddox, his parents, a sister Shirley Hollars, grandson-in-law Chance Sanderson and wife, Joyce. Ralph Ivan Maddox

Nancy Womochil of Abilene, passsed away February 14, 2024.at Homestead of Abilene (formerly Abilene Place).

 Nancy was born October 1, 1943 in Abilene to Harold and Mildred Houlton. Nancy attended local schools.&nbsp; On April 29, 1962 Nancy married Larry Womochil, they later divorced. To this union two children were born, Diane Ferris (Steve) of Abilene and Mike Womochil (Kelly) of Abilene. Nancy worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses and worked for the Wilson’s the longest.

Nancy is survived by her children as well as her sister Linda Houlton of Des Moines Iowa and 17 grandchildren. Nancy was preceded in death by her brother Kenneth Houlton, and sisters Thelma Knopp, Phyllis Fager, and Janice Kleinsorge.

Family visitation will be held at Martin Becker Carlson Funeral home Thursday evening February 22 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A memorial service for Nancy will be held February 23, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grace United Church of Christ 8th and Buckeye in Abilene. Inurnment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery south of Enterprise, KS.

Nancy Womochil

John Edward Deist III, age 44, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away suddenly on November 11, 2023.

Born in Hutchinson, Kansas on September 2, 1979 to John Edward and Catherine Jean (Hall) Deist, Jr.; both precede him in death. While the Deist family moved a few times during John's pre-teen and teenage years, the majority of his growing years were in Sterling, Kansas. A high school graduate of Sterling High, John ran cross country and track and his senior year, he was known to be running with flaming orange hair. Upon graduation, John joined the United States Army with his eyes on a career in Intelligence.

Over the next twenty-one years, John was deployed to Korea, Egypt and Djibouti and served five tours in the Iraq War. His last deployment was in Frankfurt, Germany where he retired at his goal as a Sergeant Major. Among his decorated awards during his time in the Army are the bronze service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.

John was most proud to be a father. Married twice, first to Rochelle Ratto; they were parents to two children, Aidan and Reagan. Rochelle precedes John in death. John's second marriage was to Jessica Harris. John loved animals and leaves behind his cat George, who returned home with John from his deployment in Germany, and puppy, Petunia.

Surviving John are his children, Aidan Deist and Reagan Deist; his maternal grandparents, Walter and Glenna Hall of Mesa, Arizona; six siblings, Jeffrey Deist (wife Wendy), Elizabeth Dietz (wife Kara), Emma Deist Vaughn, Patricia Deist Williams (husband Gary), Jennifer Deist Weber, and Butch Deist; many nieces and nephews, Aunts and cousins; and his partner, Nancy Brown.

John is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Phyllis (Baldwin) Deist, Sr., of Sterling, Kansas.

A memorial service will be held for John on March 8, 2024 at 10 a.m. in Manhattan, Kansas, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home. Inurnment with military honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Riley in Manhattan.

John Edward Deist III

Oscar V. Larmer, age 99, of Manhattan, died February 17, 2024, at Meadowlark Hills Wroten House.

He was born July 11, 1924 in Wichita, Kansas. He was the third son of Carrie (Yard) Larmer and Burleigh “Burt” Larmer. Family activities included games and gardening. He was raised with strong neighborhood ties and lifelong friends. He attended Wichita public schools. Oscar served in World War Two in General Patton’s Third Army as it campaigned across France and Germany. He received a medical discharge in Spring of 1944. On December 31, 1945, he was united in marriage to Mary Arlene Duehring. They had known each other since childhood. A daughter and a son were born this union.

Oscar always had a passion for art and may be best known for painting the Flint Hills and its many seasons. He demonstrated talent at an early age. While in Wichita East High School, he received art scholarships to attend drawing classes taught by his mentor William Dickerson. Oscar attended Minneapolis School of Art and Design and graduated with Honors. He received a BFA in painting from the University of Kansas in 1949. He worked at Boeing in the Aircraft Illustration Department, while completing his MFA at Wichita State University. He later served as Assistant Art Director at Wichita Art Museum.

The family moved to Manhattan in 1956 to teach drawing and painting at Kansas State University. He served as Chair of the Art Department (1969-1971). Under his leadership, the department grew from 5 faculty members to 27 and began to offer accredited BFA and MFA degrees. Throughout his career, he enjoyed working with young artists and loved being a teacher. He always took great pride in his students and the quality work they produced. During his time at KSU, he was commissioned to design the school logo, the Presidential Medial, and the Centennial Medal. While he retired from KSU in 1989, he continued sharing his love art by teaching workshops and restoring paintings. Oscar cherished the natural beauty of eastern Kanas and tried to share this through his art and among his favorite views were Mouldin Creek, Eastside Tuttle Creek, Lavine’s Water Ranch, and Ranch Road South of Wamego.

He received numerous awards and accolades for his paintings. During his career, he had participated in 120 juried exhibitions and had 60 solo exhibits. His work is in the collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Kansas City, MO, the Beach Museum of Art at Kansas State University, and the Ulrich Museum of Art at Wichita State University as well as numerous corporate and private collections.

Oscar valued service and always gave of himself to others. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving as Chairman of the board in 1956. In the 1960s, he painted biblical mural for its ED Center. Later, he painted dioramas and Christian inspired art for the Harris Temple.

In Manhattan, he was Master of the Lafayette Lodge #16 AF&amp;AM. His paintings are still featured in the Lodge. He was of Lieutenant Governor of Bridfgefort Camp. He confirmed awards for service clubs. He was also active in scouting.

He is survived by his daughter, Mary Lynn King of Manhattan, his son, Michael Vance Larmer and his wife Karen of Garden City, KS; five grandchildren: Rich King (Marcie Gilliland), Jason King (Becky Cheek-King), Seth King, Leanna Adams (Tim) and Nick Larmer (Kourtney); and seven great-grandchildren: Abby Dzwierzynski (Brendon), Ellory Gilliland-King (Josh Miller), Kelsey King, Crosby King, Hannah Adams, Josiah Adams and Grace Larmer. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his storytelling, and his joy for life.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 24th, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, with Reverends Donna Voteau and Melanie Nord officiating. Private family inurnment will be in the Sunrise Cemetery in Manhattan.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Kansas State University for the Oscar Larmer Scholarship Fund, the First United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army. Contributions may be left in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502.
