Urban, 96 died November 4, 2023, in Clay Center, KS. &nbsp;She was born on February 9, 1927, in Cloud County, the daughter of and George and Georginna (Charbonneau) Cyre. &nbsp; &nbsp;Dorothy was raised in Cloud County. &nbsp;She married Fred Urban on May 20, 1946. &nbsp;They made their home and farmed near Morganville. &nbsp;Dorothy also drove a school bus for 23 years, retiring in 1988. &nbsp;She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Catholic Women’s Organization, the Happy Hour Club and served as a Girl Scout den mother. &nbsp;In her free time, Dorothy enjoyed gardening and baking pies. &nbsp;She was preceded in death by husband, parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Trace Alan, 24 of Marysville, KS passed away November 1, 2023. He was born April 22, 1999 in Clay Center to Bill Buttman and Kristin Oestreich.

Trace grew up in Clifton, attending Clifton-Clyde schools. He lived in Concordia after school and in 2020 moved to Marysville where he worked as a laser operator at Landolls. In the meantime he worked on obtaining his GED and then certification in cyber-security.&nbsp;

Trace would return to his family home often to play basketball in the driveway with his brother and sister or treat them with trips to Wal-Mart, McDonalds, or the movies.

Hobbies included cheering on all Cleveland Pro teams including the Browns, Cavaliers and Indians and KU Jayhawk basketball and football. He also enjoyed PC gaming and playing online with his brother. Trace grew his hair out to cut and donate to locks of love and was working on growing it out a 2nd &nbsp;time for the same purpose.

Trace loved animals, especially dogs and snakes. He had 2 cats and 2 dogs and pet snakes in the past. When in high school, he adopted a stray redbone coonhound which he named Rocket and bonded with right away.

Trace's memory will be cherished by his mother Kristin Oestreich, step-father Ryan Oestreich, brother Ayden Oestreich, sister Joely Oestreich, grandmother Eleanor Kieffer, step-grandfather Ron Oestreich, aunts: Kimberley Kieffer, Marla Oestreich, Erin Oestreich, Traci Oestreich; uncles Patrick Buttman, Mike Buttman, Bobby Buttman, Phillip Buttman and Troy Surprise.

He is preceded in death by his father William "Bill" David Buttman, Jr., Paternal grandparents William David and Margy Buttman, Maternal Grandfather Douglas Kieffer.

A prayer service will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center, Kansas.

Inurnment will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Clyde, Kansas.

Trace Alan, 24 of Marysville

Suzanne (King) Hauserman, 104, died Wednesday morning, November 1, 2023, at the Leonardville Nursing Home. Suzanne was born on June 2, 1919, the daughter of George and Clara (Sanneman) King and she was raised with two brothers and one sister on the family farm in the Garfield Township.

Suzanne attended the Idylwild Grade School, only a mile from their home, and after graduation from Clay Center Community High School, became a teacher at this same school for all 8 grades. &nbsp;She mentioned some of the eighth-grade boys were bigger than she was. &nbsp;They would help her get the fire started in the coal stove early on cold mornings. &nbsp;She was a creative and energetic young teacher.

On May 5, 1940, Suzanne married Kenneth R. Hauserman. &nbsp;They were married for 57 years and worked together as partners in the farming operation. &nbsp;They raised their three children in Clay Center: Gail Hauserman (Karen), Vicky Harris and Jane Siebert.&nbsp;

Suzanne continued living in the home after Kenneth’s death in 2007, until she was 98. &nbsp;When she entered the Leonardville Nursing Home she told family and friends, “I never expected to live this long”, and as every year passed, she would shake her head and tell everyone, “I guess I’m still kicking”. We contribute her long life to the devoted care she received at the LNH and the dedicated regular visits from her daughter Vicky.

It is not easy to live to be 104, but Suzanne met each physical health challenge with stamina and a strong will to carry on. &nbsp;She was kind to the staff, and they loved her like a grandma. She always remembered to say “thank you” for all they did for her.&nbsp;

When Suzanne turned 85 her grandchildren put together a book called “The 85 Things We Love About You”. &nbsp;They managed to capture her love of cooking, her welcoming hospitality, her wit and humor, and her ability to make them all feel special. &nbsp;Number 85 rounded out her legacy and character: wise, humble, generous, servant’s heart, full of love, honest, pure, and kind. &nbsp;

Suzanne’s seven grandchildren: Chris Hauserman (Anjanette), Jill Mugler (Marlin), Paula Brown (Darren), Jason Harris (Paige), Suzanne Otta (Chris), Casana Siebert (Emily), and Andrew Siebert (Amy); brought special joy to Suzanne with 15 great grandchildren. &nbsp;

Suzanne was preceded in death by her husband, parents, son-in-law Jim Harris, brothers Hilton and Robert, and sister Helen Doyle.

Suzanne (King) Hauserman

Lynne Adell Hofman Morton, age 85, of Wamego, died October 26, 2023, at Stormont-Vail Health in Topeka.

She was born on December 1, 1937, in Wamego, the daughter of Delmar and Olive Ann (Edwards) Hofman. She grew up in the St. George and Wamego area. Lynne attended St. George schools and graduated with the class of 1955. She was proud of her playing days in high school on the basketball team at a time when women’s sports were still relatively young.

As a child, Lynne was involved in 4-H and later became a leader in both 4-H and Scouts. She attended Kansas State University for a year before becoming a homemaker and providing child care for several families. Later in life she was employed as an ophthalmologist office assistant.

On June 17, 1956, Lynne was united in marriage to Melvin “Sonny” Morton in Wamego. They were blessed with three children: Michael, Mark, and Michele.

Lynne enjoyed being part of the Wamego community. She was always willing to help and support the Wamego area events, such as the Tulip Festival, the Wamego Community Health Ministry, HollyFest and later she and Sonny delivered Meals on Wheels.

Lynne and Sonny were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Wamego. Through the years, she was active in helping with the VBS Programs and Sunday School at church as well woman’s groups and Bible studies. She also enjoyed gardening, houseplants, cooking, sewing, reading, and playing the piano and dulcimer. However, she will be remembered most for her faith in Jesus Christ and her love of family.

Lynne is survived by her husband of 67 plus years, Sonny Morton, her children: Michael Morton (Cleion), Mark Morton, Michele Morton-Best (Bill); her six grandchildren: Allison Smith (Matt), Katelin Goetz (Brett), Madison Morton, Makenzie Morton, Sierra Best, Bryce Best (Maddison) and Ethan Morton-Gaught. In addition, she leaves behind seven great grandchildren: Bella, Lily, and Harrison Smith; Brantley, Kinsley, and Wesley Goetz and Berkleigh Best.

A Celebration of Lynne’s Life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Wamego, 601 Elm Street in Wamego, on Sunday, November 19 at 1:30 p.m.

A private family interment will be held in the Wamego City Cemetery.

Douglas Loren “Doug” Brown, age 66 of Manhattan, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023 at Via Christi Village.

He was born on February 13, 1957, the son of Vernon Loren and Lina Belle (Owen) Brown.&nbsp; He graduated from Manhattan High School.&nbsp; Following high school, he played football for Coffeyville Community College and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Kansas State University.

Doug was a Captain of the 1974 Manhattan High Football State Championship team and earned All-State and All-Conference honors.&nbsp; At Coffeyville Community College, he was the starting linebacker for the 1975 National Junior College Championship team.&nbsp; He was also a standout wrestler and held school records in track and field.&nbsp; He was in the Boy Scouts where he earned the status of Eagle Scout.&nbsp; Doug was also active in AA and served as a sponsor.

He is survived by his mother, Lina Brown of Manhattan; two sisters, Cheryl Brown of Manhattan and Arlette Nicholson and husband Barry of Howell, Michigan; one brother, Brian Brown and wife Karla of Greeley, Colorado, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 3, 2023 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Jay Bessmer officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Riley Cemetery.

Douglas Loren “Doug” Brown

Sharon Kay (Toburen) Springer, age 82, of Westmoreland, passed away peacefully Monday, October 30, 2023, in Westmoreland, KS.

She was born on September 5, 1941, at Saint Mary Hospital in Manhattan to Hazel (Weber) and Kenneth Toburen of Cleburne, KS. Raised in the Swede Creek community on a small farm, Sharon was the eldest of three children, followed by brothers Lyn and Barrie. She spent time as a member of the Swede Creek United Methodist Church and the Swede Creek 4-H Club. Sharon’s affection for animals began on the family farm where her father bred Rough Collies, and she often hid her favorite puppies from potential buyers. Sharon’s life was filled with many pets, including Biscuit, her current fur baby, who brought her much comfort in her final years.

Sharon graduated in 1959 from Blue Valley High School in Randolph, KS. She continued her education by attending Kansas State University from 1959 - 1962 and then trained as an X-ray technician under Dr. Roger Wallace at the Manhattan Medical Center. Sharon began her career in 1964 at the Memorial Hospital of Manhattan and continued to work in the radiology department at Dechairo Hospital of Westmoreland, Candlewood Physicians of Manhattan, and Stormont-Vail /Cotton-O’Neil of Wamego, retiring in 2008.

On June 2, 1962, Sharon married her high school sweetheart, Jerrol Lynn Springer, in the Swede Creek United Methodist Church. They had three children, Kim, Pam, and Doug, and their family expanded with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sharon loved sharing her childhood traditions, including Christmas cookie baking and playing Bingo and Pig with her family.

Influenced by her family, especially her father, Sharon developed a strong religious faith and a passion for spreading the Word of God. She was a dedicated member of Westmoreland United Methodist Church, known for her various acts of service, including choir participation, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and helping initiate the Kids After-School Program. Sharon played a vital role in bringing the Harvesters food program to Westmoreland, which led her to establish Westmoreland’s sole local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes-Food Pantry.

Sharon deepened her knowledge of Christianity through local Bible study and by leading the local chapter of United Methodist Women (UMW). As an enthusiastic reader, she drew inspiration from the UMW reading list to promote global social justice and held several UMW District positions, including Kansas East Conference Representative to the National Conference. Sharon used her talents to create several quilted district banners for presentation at National UMW Conferences.

Sharon spent most Friday nights cheering for the Westy Wildcats and later the K-State Wildcats. She enjoyed photography, scrapbooking, and quilting. Sharon’s sewing skills were exceptional; she crafted a wealth of items for her family, including her daughter’s wedding dresses, as well as altering clothing for numerous people, earning her the nickname “Princess Presser Foot” in the local Red Hat Society. She was also a skilled gardener, successfully cultivating a wide variety of flowers, including her beloved daylilies.

Sharon is survived by three children: Kim Clopton and husband Robby of Liberty Hill, Texas; Pam Lauer and husband Joe of Olsburg; Doug Springer and wife Jenny of Wamego; one brother, Barrie Toburen and wife Beverly of Westmoreland; one sister-in-law, Sheryl Toburen of Manhattan; six grandchildren: Makynna Hood, Garrison Clopton, Jarrid Lauer (Jana), Laurel Wahl (Chris), Jake Springer, and Sara Springer; and two great grandchildren, Reddick Lauer and Ria Lauer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerrol Springer; parents, Kenneth and Hazel Toburen; and brother, Lyn Toburen.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8:00 p.m. on November 9, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Westmoreland, KS.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on November 10, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Westmoreland, KS, with luncheon to follow. A private family inurnment will be held at the Carnahan Creek Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Sharon Springer’s name to be distributed to the Loaves and Fishes-Food Pantry of the United Methodist Church.  </figure>Sharon Kay (Toburen) Springer, age 82, of Westmoreland, passed away peacefully Monday, October 30, 2023, in Westmoreland, KS.She was born on September 5, 1941, at Saint Mary Hospital in Manhattan to Hazel (Weber) and Kenneth Toburen of Cleburne, KS. Raised in the Swede Creek community on a small farm, Sharon was the eldest of three children, followed by brothers Lyn and Barrie. She spent time as a member of the Swede Creek United Methodist Church and the Swede Creek 4-H Club. Sharon’s affection for animals began on the family farm where her father bred Rough Collies, and she often hid her favorite puppies from potential buyers. Sharon’s life was filled with many pets, including Biscuit, her current fur baby, who brought her much comfort in her final years.Sharon graduated in 1959 from Blue Valley High School in Randolph, KS. She continued her education by attending Kansas State University from 1959 - 1962 and then trained as an X-ray technician under Dr. Roger Wallace at the Manhattan Medical Center. Sharon began her career in 1964 at the Memorial Hospital of Manhattan and continued to work in the radiology department at Dechairo Hospital of Westmoreland, Candlewood Physicians of Manhattan, and Stormont-Vail /Cotton-O’Neil of Wamego, retiring in 2008.On June 2, 1962, Sharon married her high school sweetheart, Jerrol Lynn Springer, in the Swede Creek United Methodist Church. They had three children, Kim, Pam, and Doug, and their family expanded with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sharon loved sharing her childhood traditions, including Christmas cookie baking and playing Bingo and Pig with her family.Influenced by her family, especially her father, Sharon developed a strong religious faith and a passion for spreading the Word of God. She was a dedicated member of Westmoreland United Methodist Church, known for her various acts of service, including choir participation, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and helping initiate the Kids After-School Program. Sharon played a vital role in bringing the Harvesters food program to Westmoreland, which led her to establish Westmoreland’s sole local food pantry, Loaves and Fishes-Food Pantry.Sharon deepened her knowledge of Christianity through local Bible study and by leading the local chapter of United Methodist Women (UMW). As an enthusiastic reader, she drew inspiration from the UMW reading list to promote global social justice and held several UMW District positions, including Kansas East Conference Representative to the National Conference. Sharon used her talents to create several quilted district banners for presentation at National UMW Conferences.Sharon spent most Friday nights cheering for the Westy Wildcats and later the K-State Wildcats. She enjoyed photography, scrapbooking, and quilting. Sharon’s sewing skills were exceptional; she crafted a wealth of items for her family, including her daughter’s wedding dresses, as well as altering clothing for numerous people, earning her the nickname “Princess Presser Foot” in the local Red Hat Society. She was also a skilled gardener, successfully cultivating a wide variety of flowers, including her beloved daylilies.Sharon is survived by three children: Kim Clopton and husband Robby of Liberty Hill, Texas; Pam Lauer and husband Joe of Olsburg; Doug Springer and wife Jenny of Wamego; one brother, Barrie Toburen and wife Beverly of Westmoreland; one sister-in-law, Sheryl Toburen of Manhattan; six grandchildren: Makynna Hood, Garrison Clopton, Jarrid Lauer (Jana), Laurel Wahl (Chris), Jake Springer, and Sara Springer; and two great grandchildren, Reddick Lauer and Ria Lauer.She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerrol Springer; parents, Kenneth and Hazel Toburen; and brother, Lyn Toburen.The family will receive friends from 6 - 8:00 p.m. on November 9, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Westmoreland, KS.A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on November 10, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Westmoreland, KS, with luncheon to follow. Sondra Sue Hedberg, 82, of Clay Center died on Monday, October 30, 2023 at her residence. &nbsp;She was born May 31, 1941 in Clyde, Kansas, the daughter of Oscar and Marie (Fuller) Cranmer. &nbsp;

Sue grew up in and attended schools in Clyde. &nbsp;She married Norman Hedberg, Sr. on August 30, 1958 and he preceded her in death on December 19, 1997. &nbsp;Sue was a housewife for many years. &nbsp;She worked as a sales lady for McDonald’s and later, Mayo’s. &nbsp;She then worked at Scott Specialties as a seamstress until her retirement.

Sue was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a charter member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.

She was also preceded in death by parents; son, Keith Hedberg; daughter, Mary Hedberg; great grandson, Braxton; 4 brothers, Glen Cranmer, Ralph Cranmer, Bill Cranmer and Jim Cranmer; 5 sisters, Velda Douglas, Ilene Hedberg, Sharon Logan, Judy Morgison and Connie Williamson.

Sue is survived by 3 sons, Norman, Jr. and his wife, Cindie Hedberg of Batavia, OH, David Hedberg of Clay Center, KS, and Scott and his wife, Trudy Hedberg of Portland, TX; daughter, Renea Manning of Clay Center, KS; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; brother, Kenneth and his wife, Cindy Cranmer of Tavares, FL and sister, Patricia Eye and her husband Leonard of Clay Center, KS.

Paul George Ruff, 79, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2023, from complications due to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Paul was a renowned cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon in Springfield, Missouri, for 37 years. Beloved by patients and coworkers alike for his surgical skills and kindness, his patients often stopped him to chat years after their surgeries. He was a master of puns and riddles and famously entertained friends and family with his dry one-liners.

Paul enjoyed many adventures in life including piloting various aircraft, scuba diving, and canoe trips. He was a skilled woodworker and enthusiastic skier well into his 60s. Paul traveled extensively to visit his family and see the world. His favorite place was his farm in Chadwick, Missouri, where he retired with his beloved dogs and embraced country living wholeheartedly. He famously adopted a third dog “by default” when it followed him home from the local convenience store. He was known to enjoy cold Diet Cokes, warm baked goods and extra-large buckets of popcorn.

Paul attended Clay Center Community High School in Clay Center, Kansas, the University of Kansas, and the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. He completed his surgical residency and a fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospitals and Clinics. He earned the honor of Eagle Scout and was licensed to fly a plane before he could legally drive a car.

Born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on December 5, 1943, Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Wava (Cate) Ruff and Carl Ruff, and younger brother, Evan Ruff.

He leaves behind three children: Tim (Marla) Ruff, Ben (Jennifer) Ruff and Molly (Chris) Rouse. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Eric, Chad, Benny, Brady, Grayson, Madi and Avery. He was married for more than 50 years to Jo Ruff. He is survived by two sisters, Joan (Dennis Wilbert) Ruff and Ellen (Steve) Resnick, sister-in-law Linda Ruff, and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life is being planned for Spring 2024 at King’s Way United Methodist Church in Springfield, Missouri, where Paul was a member for many years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri.&nbsp;

Benjamin Michael Minson, age 47, passed away October 31, 2023 at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, KS. He was born to Gary and Joyce Minson on October 30, 1976 in Independence, MO. He grew up in northern Minnesota with his parents and siblings.

Ben had a passion for US history and instilled this love in all his siblings, often challenging them with “Do you know what happened on this day…?” He loved and was proud of his faith, his family and his country. Rarely would he be seen without a bold red, white and blue statement in his attire. His interests also included puzzles, trivia, old westerns, travel and all things Man in Black. Ronald Reagan, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Johnny Cash and John Waynewere just a handful of hero’s Ben revered. He was an avid reader with a tendency towards biographies and of course history. You could often find him at the Eisenhower museum enjoying the most recent display or giving guided tours to visiting family and friends. It is the firm and uncontested opinion of his family, that while the grief is currently all consuming, Ben was ours, making us the lucky ones. Ben was known around the Abilene community as the man with the gentle smile. Ben worked and was a part of the Abilene Country Mart family for 16+ years. He loved being at work and socializing with everyone that he met. So much so, that no one was a stranger to him. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, the Eisenhower Foundation and the Reagan Ranch Center.

Ben is survived by his parents Gary and Joyce of Abilene, along with a multitude of siblings: Mia (Scott) Thompson of Hesperus, CO; Luke (LeeEllen) Minson of Shepherd, MT; Micah (Grace) Minson of Liberty, MO; Caleb Minson of Billings, MT; Elisabeth (Connor) Kijowski of Salt Lake City, UT; Andrew Minson of Omaha, NE; Jacob Minson of Abilene and 9 nieces and nephews. Benjamin Michael Minson

Peggy Rae TenEyck, 87, of Alma, Kansas, died Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. She was a life-long resident of the area.

Peggy was born on December 30, 1935, in Wamego, Kansas, the daughter of Lester and Florence (Little) Marten. &nbsp;She attended local grade school and graduated in 1954, from Alma High School. &nbsp;She attended business school and was a Certified Med and Nurse’s Aide.

Peggy worked for over twenty years for Wabaunsee County as a secretary, first in the Health Department and then for the Road and Bridge Department. &nbsp;Prior to working for the county, Peggy worked twenty years at the Alma Manor. &nbsp;She also was the cook at a couple local restaurants. &nbsp;She loved to cook, and no one ever left her home hungry. &nbsp;Her grandchildren knew there would always be dessert and she was known for her cinnamon rolls. &nbsp;Peggy enjoyed camping and loved the times the family spent at the Council Grove Lake. &nbsp;Peggy was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alta Vista, but usually attended Redeemer Lutheran Mission at Lake Wabaunsee.

Peggy married Harold “Jupe” TenEyck on September 3, 1974, in Alma. &nbsp;After spending forty-nine years of their lives together, Jupe survives at their home.

Peggy is also survived by her children; Jennifer Savage (David), Alma, and Travis TenEyck (Joyce), Wamego; her grandchildren, Jessica Tennis (Tristan), Alma, Josie Griego (Marco), Norman, Oklahoma, Jordyn Giberti (Kirill), Ft. Liberty, North Carolina, Clara Carter, Alma, Maggie Ritter, Texas, Gerrit TenEyck, Wamego, Buzzy Johnson, Alma, and Rayann Johnson, Topeka; her great-grandchildren, Collison, Porter, Fisher, Chandler, Matthew, and Addie; as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. &nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Buzz Johnson, and her brother Gerald “Cheese” Marten.

Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. &nbsp;Reverend John Fries will be officiating. &nbsp;The family will greet friends on Monday, at the church, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. &nbsp;They suggest memorial contributions to Redeemer Lutheran Mission, and those may be sent in care of Campanella and Stewart Funeral Home.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Peggy Rae TenEyck

Merti O. (Miller) Richter, 64, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday (October 28, 2023) in her home after a courageous two year battle with glioblastoma.

Born December 12, 1958 in Westmoreland, Kansas, Merti was the daughter of Arthur and Frances (Heustis) Miller. &nbsp;She was a graduate of Wabaunsee High School and had worked at Rubottom Pharmacy and later as the Secretary at the Alma Grade School. &nbsp;Merti retired in 2020 from the Kansas Lottery. &nbsp;She also had a passion for photography and had photographed several weddings and many school portraits for students in Alma.

She enjoyed sewing and reading and was an avid gardener. She was known for starting many other new plants from a portion or seed from another plant. &nbsp;In February 2021, nine months prior to her diagnosis and up to the time of her surgery, Merti discovered a talent for drawing which is now believed to be related to the growth of the tumor she had.

For the last 20 years, Merti shared her life with her partner, Nick Reilly.

(Miller) Richter, 64, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday (October 28, 2023) in her home after a courageous two year battle with glioblastoma.Born December 12, 1958 in Westmoreland, Kansas, Merti was the daughter of Arthur and Frances (Heustis) Miller. &nbsp;She was a graduate of Wabaunsee High School and had worked at Rubottom Pharmacy and later as the Secretary at the Alma Grade School. &nbsp;Merti retired in 2020 from the Kansas Lottery. &nbsp;She also had a passion for photography and had photographed several weddings and many school portraits for students in Alma.She enjoyed sewing and reading and was an avid gardener. Marie was born March 18, 1921, in Leonardville, Kansas the daughter of Fritz Rudolph and Elizabeth Louise (Fernstrom) Peterson.&nbsp; Marie worked as an Avon Sales Representative for over fifty years. She was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion Post #45 Ladies Auxiliary and the Fraternal Order of The Eagles Lodge #830 all of Junction City, Kansas. When Marie was 91, she received the "Helping Hand Award" for donating time writing hundreds of cards and letters to Fort Riley Soldiers.

She is survived by two sons, Larry Remmers of New York, New York and Robert Landrith of Milford, Kansas; one daughter, Judy Bagley of Junction City, Kansas.Survivors include; grandchildren, Colleen, Heather and Nolan Sump, Aaron and Jarred Landrith and Sean and Jessica Spitz; three great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Remmers; two daughters, Shirley Sump and Sophia Spitz; one grandson, Ryan Remmers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Marguerite Agnes Sharp of rural St. George passed away peacefully October 27, surrounded by family.

She was born on December 22, 1923, in Olpe KS to Henry Carl Bolz and Frances Anna Kiene Bolz. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Olpe as Valedictorian with only 11 in her class.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;She married Marvin Sharp on May 8, 1943, at St. Mary’s Chapel on Ft Riley. To this union they had 4 children. Marvin (Wayne) Sharp (Sara) Red Oak, Tx, Tom Sharp (Lany) Oakley, KS, Dennis Sharp (Janet) Holcomb and Linda Glanzer (David) St. George.

She is survived by 18 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 22 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and her sister-in-law Betty Sharp. She is also survived by her constant companion and much-loved dog Lucy.

Everyone in her family received handwritten cards for birthday, Christmas and Anniversary. No family or friend was ever forgotten. She was loved by SO many people.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, her husband, her five brothers Harold, Leo, Charles, Elmer and Jerome, her sister Helen Rockley and grandson Timothy Michael Sharp.

Vernon Ray Kurtz who passed away at Ascension Via Christi Hospital, Manhattan, KS after a fall on October 23, 2023 will be buried at the Sumner cemetery near Alton, Kansas where his mother, Mattie Grace Lucky Kurtz, his father, Theodore Harold Kurtz, and his brother, Willis Harold Kurtz are buried.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Jo, his sons: Quentin and Bryan (Susan); Grandchildren: John Kurtz, Rebecca Kurtz (Brian Clausen) Katie Bateman (Quentin), Maegan Svita (Sam), and Lauren Kurtz (Chris Cooke); Great grandchildren: Brynnley, Claire, and Molly Quinn Bateman.

Ray was born July 12, 1933 in rural Alton, Kansas. He attended Alton city grade school, Pleasant Valley one room grade school and Alton High School. After graduating from high school in 1951, he attended Fort Hays State College and earned a BS with a major in mathematics in 1955. During Ray’s four years at Fort Hays, he lived in a professor’s basement with 3 other young men. In addition to the friendship of these young men he had friendships with young men and women in the local Hays Methodist church and members of college academic and service clubs.

On June 15, 1955, he married his high school sweetheart Mary Jo Peterson at the Mt. Ayr Friends Church near Alton, Kansas.

His first teaching position was in 1955 teaching mathematics at Osborne High School. He was called into the Army in January 1957 and did basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and then was assigned to Pine Bluff Army Chemical Corps Arsenal in Arkansas where he was a member of the “Scientific and Professional Personnel.” After his time in the Army he enrolled at Fort Hays in 1958 to work on a master’s degree. After earning that degree he taught at Gorham High School and Plainville High School where he was able to take Saturday, summer and night graduate classes at Fort Hays. He saw the importance of earning college credits which led to a position at Fort Hays in 1963. It was from this Fort Hays position that he saw the necessity of a doctor’s degree if he were to have a career teaching in higher education. At that time, he moved his family from Hays to Lincoln, Nebraska where he earned his Doctor of Education degree in 1966. Ray returned to Fort Hays to continue a teaching position. In 1970 he was hired at Kansas State University in Manhattan as an assistant professor in the College of Education. During the next 30 years he had the opportunity to advance in rank and to achieve many professional accomplishments.

It was during a National Science Foundation grant project to improve Elementary Education Mathematics, teaching a group of Shawnee Mission Kansas School District Teachers, that he met a visiting headmaster from Leicester England who invited him and the teachers to visit his school. This invitation provided the idea for the leading groups of teachers on international trips. During the following years he took 21 groups of teachers on international travel classes. His wife Mary Jo always accompanied him on these group trips. After retirement he and Mary Jo were members of travel groups to Peru in 2004 and Egypt in 2008.

Ray was proud of being editor of The Kansas Association of Teachers of Mathematics Bulletin for 21years. This position put him in contact with K-12 teachers of mathematics throughout the entire state.

Ray enjoyed being active in church attendance and church leadership. He and Mary Jo were consistent attenders each Sunday at worship services and Sunday School classes -both as teachers and members. He held numerous church leadership positions at First United Methodist Church in Manhattan, including church Lay Leader in 1971.

Ray greatly enjoyed numerous hobbies and was active in several hobby clubs.

He always kept connected to his hometown of rural Alton in Osborne County and will be interred in the local cemetery near Alton.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, October 29th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 30th, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 31st, at the Sumner Cemetery in Alton, KS.

Vernon Ray Kurtz 

Terri Lorraine Ritter, age 72 of Manhattan, passed away on October 30, 2023. Terri was born November 2, 1950, the oldest child of Kaye and Richard Barrett.

Following high school, Terri attended Cloud County Community College where she was a cheerleader and where she met the love of her life, Gary Ritter. They were married on June 14, 1970. Following college, Terri and Gary settled down near family and friends to farm in Norcatur, KS. There they had three children, Chris, Heath and Sabrina.

In 1986 they moved to Manhattan, which they called home for 37 years. Terri initially worked for Office World and then the Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 school district and then transitioned to stay at home mom, supporting her family in their many activities.

Terri loved sports! One of her greatest joys was watching her kids and grandkids compete in many sports including basketball, football, softball and wrestling. She was one of the biggest K-State football fans who ever lived, holding season tickets for more than 30 years and almost never missing a game. She was well known for her tailgate spread before each game. Her wardrobe was almost entirely purple and she was known as a #1 Cat fan to many.

Terri fought a long and brave battle with breast cancer followed by metastatic breast cancer and, as was her style, outlived many dire prognoses with an “I will beat this” attitude. Her spunk endeared her to many.

Terri was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, and her parents Richard and Kaye Barrett.

She is survived by her children, Chris (Crystal) Ritter of Clearwater, Heath (Marci) Ritter of Randolph and Sabrina (Chris) Ault of Belvue, four grandchildren, Megan Ritter, Brent Ritter and Alayna and Easton Ault, one brother, Richard Barrett of Wichita, lifetime friends Barb and Barry Brooks and their children Amber Norman and Farrah Brooks, along with other relatives and many friends.

The family is so appreciative of the home health aides, nurses and transportation drivers at Meadowlark Hills who treated Terri like family and provided care through her time there.

Visitation is planned on Thursday, November 2 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 3 at Sedalia Cemetery in rural Manhattan, Kansas with Rev. Kevin Larson officiating.

Terri Lorraine Ritter

Diann Goodyear was born on October 2, 1956 to Joan &amp; Duane Garrett, joining her older brother Gordon, and later celebrating the completion of their family with her brother Blaine (although when Blaine married Janet, that was probably the best addition!). They all grew up together in Russell, KS.

Diann met the new boy who moved in next door in 1970. She and Ken attended K-State together and later married in 1976. The salient facts are as follows, their children were born in 1978 (Erica Krzykowski), 1980 (Phillip Goodyear), 1982 (Melissa Nickel) and 1984 (Angela Strahm). So, everyone in the family is on an even year and important events are 2 years apart. This makes birthdays and anniversaries easier to remember!

Diann loved beauty and had creative giftings seldom restricted by practicality. She sewed, painted, quilted, decorated and stitched amazing works of art. She passed that skill on to at least 2 of her 4 children (anyone who knows her family can make assumptions as to which ones they are).

Diann loved her children fiercely and adored her 13 grandchildren, currently ages three to twenty-three. Amazingly enough, the rules that governed her children’s lives were never to be used in relation to her grandchildren!

Diann became ill with Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA) approximately 6 years ago. She persevered and continued to express herself through beautiful projects and spending quality time with Ken, her children and grandchildren. Diann loved Jesus and had complete confidence about going to heaven. It was our privilege (and sometimes challenge) to care for our wife/mom for the last 6 years. She was well loved and will be very missed.

 </figure>Diann Goodyear was born on October 2, 1956 to Joan &amp; Duane Garrett, joining her older brother Gordon, and later celebrating the completion of their family with her brother Blaine (although when Blaine married Janet, that was probably the best addition!). They all grew up together in Russell, KS.Diann met the new boy who moved in next door in 1970. She and Ken attended K-State together and later married in 1976. The salient facts are as follows, their children were born in 1978 (Erica Krzykowski), 1980 (Phillip Goodyear), 1982 (Melissa Nickel) and 1984 (Angela Strahm). So, everyone in the family is on an even year and important events are 2 years apart. This makes birthdays and anniversaries easier to remember!Diann loved beauty and had creative giftings seldom restricted by practicality. She sewed, painted, quilted, decorated and stitched amazing works of art. She passed that skill on to at least 2 of her 4 children (anyone who knows her family can make assumptions as to which ones they are).Diann loved her children fiercely and adored her 13 grandchildren, currently ages three to twenty-three. Amazingly enough, the rules that governed her children’s lives were never to be used in relation to her grandchildren!Diann became ill with Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA) approximately 6 years ago. She persevered and continued to express herself through beautiful projects and spending quality time with Ken, her children and grandchildren. Diann loved Jesus and had complete confidence about going to heaven. It was our privilege (and sometimes challenge) to care for our wife/mom for the last 6 years. Janice E. Kleinsorge, 82, of Enterprise passed away October 25th 2023 at Memorial Hospital in Abilene. Janice was born August 3, 1941 the daughter of Harold and Mildred Houlton in Abilene, KS.Janice was a graduate of Abilene high school. Janice lived in Colorado for many years and was a project manager and office manager for the home weatherization program for the State of Colorado. Later in life Janice married George Kleinsorge Jr. and returned to Enterprise to make their home.

Janice is survived by her husband George of the home. Daughters Kim Riffel and husband Terry of rural Enterprise, Brenda Ehrhart and husband Mark of Omaha Nebraska. Sons Roger Kelley and wife Becky of rural Chapman and Mark Kelley and wife Wanda of Charlston South Carolina. Step Children Dawn Washborn husband Jason of Zuric Kansas, John Kleinsorge of New York and Robert (Bo) Kleinsorge wife Julie of Colby, Kansas. Janice is also survived by sisters Nancy Womochil of Abilene and Linda Houlton of Des Moines Iowa as well as nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Janice was preceeded in death by her brother Kenneth Houlton and sisters, Thelma Knopp and Phylis Fager.

Janice is remembered for her warm and bubbly personality and her kindness shown to anyone she met. A scripture service to honor Janice will be held at 2:00 p.m. November 4, 2023 at St. Michael Catholic Church 210 E. 6th Street in Chapman. Donald F. Tommer, age 81, of Waterville, passed away on Friday, October 27, 2023, at Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

Don was born November 27, 1941, in rural Waterville to Francis V. and Amy I (Fisher) Tommer.&nbsp; He graduated from Waterville High School in 1959, then joined the US Navy.&nbsp; He married Dixie L. Thornton in 1971.

Don was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 38 years.&nbsp; He was a member of St. Monica and St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and was also a member of Springer Post 332 of the American Legion in Waterville.

He was an avid outdoorsman loving to hunt, fish, garden, and watch birds.&nbsp; He also had a passion for collecting historical items.&nbsp; In years past he and Dixie loved to square dance and play cards.

Survivors include Don’s wife Dixie, his three children:&nbsp; Rebecca, Robert of San Diego, and Wayne of Newton, a brother, William, and wife Sandy of Silver Lake, four grandchildren:&nbsp; Phillip and wife Lauren of Manhattan, Sarah, Hayden and Kerstin, and two great grandchildren: Ella and Fisher.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 10, 2023, at St. Monica and St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Blue Rapids with Father Anthony Chendumalli as the Celebrant. Rosemary Forst will be the organist.&nbsp;Honorary Bearers are Martin and Linda Merrill.&nbsp; Inurnment with Military Honors by Springer Post 332 of the American Legion and an Honors Detail from the US Navy, will be at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Cemetery in Marysville.

Eldon E. Davis, age 91, of Blue Rapids, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at Blue Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center in Blue Rapids.

Eldon was born on June 2, 1932, in Marysville, to Eldon and Margaret (Butler) Davis.&nbsp; He graduated from Marysville High School in 1950.&nbsp; He served in the US Navy during Korea.&nbsp; He married Beulah Farrell on July 10, 1954, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Marysville, she passed away on April 19, 1985. They had three children: Bruce, Dianne and Karen.&nbsp; He married Patricia (Yungeberg) Weiche on February 15, 1987, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Blue Rapids.&nbsp; Pat brought four more children to the family: Lori, Michelle, Robin and Glenna.&nbsp; Eldon had worked as a meat cutter for Stanley’s Hy-klas Grocery Store in Blue Rapids for years.

Eldon was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Blue Rapids and the George Bedford Post 169 of the American Legion, also in Blue Rapids.&nbsp; He coached and played softball for many years, and taught the Hunter Safety Program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Eldon could be very funny in a stoic kind of way.&nbsp; You needed to watch out when he had a glint in his eye and he frequently had a good joke ready to tell.

Survivors include his wife Pat, his children: Dianne Davis of Waterville, Karen (Rob) Swearingen of Blue Rapids, Lori Dornbusch of Herington, Michelle Martin of Orange City, Florida, Robin (Sean) Martin of Pleasant Hill, Missouri, and Glenna (Kris) Beckley of Wellsville, sixteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Preceding Eldon in death are his parents, his first wife Beulah, a son, Bruce Davis, two grandchildren: Alyssa Davis and Zachary Jones, a brother, Jerry Davis and a sister, Peggy Pellham.

A private family graveside service will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery, north of Blue Rapids with Father Greg Doll officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment with Military Honors by George Bedford Post 169 of the American Legion and an Honors Detail from the US Navy will be at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Betty Jones, 99, of Clay Center, Kansas, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2023. Betty was born in Auburn, NE and spent most of her early life in rural communities in Washington County before moving to Clay Center, KS where she raised her family.

In 1939, Betty married Lawrence Dodd, and together they embarked on a life of farming and building their family until Lawrence's passing in 1976. Betty's dedication to education led her to Kansas State University and Cloud County Community College, where she earned her certifications in Food Services as a Dietician. For 15 years, she served as the Food Manager at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor, touching the lives of many with warm heart.

In 1982, Betty found love again and married Howard Jones, with whom she shared numerous adventures until his passing in 1998. Together, they served as camp hosts in the picturesque landscapes of Colorado and Wyoming for over a decade, creating cherished memories and lifelong friendships.
