Carolyn Marie Bailey, age 84 of Manhattan, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2023 at Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan.

She was born on October 8, 1938 in Salina, the daughter of Willard Carl and Opal Fern (Miller) Burkman.&nbsp; She graduated from Randolph High School.

On June 3, 1956, she married Orland L. Rosell.&nbsp; They had four children and later divorced.&nbsp; She married Russell E. Bailey on September 10, 1982.&nbsp; He preceded her in death in 2008.

Carolyn worked as the food service supervisor at Kansas State University Student Union, was a produce manager for Dyers IGA and worked in food service at Wamego High School.&nbsp; She was a member of the Manhattan Church of Christ and Riley County Senior Center.&nbsp; Carolyn was helpful by nature and enjoyed cake decorating, bowling, square dancing, fishing, camping, boating and playing Bunco.&nbsp; She was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and K-State Women’s basketball.

She is survived by two sons, Orland L. Rosell, Jr. and wife Pam of Great F alls, Montana and Edward L. Rosell and wife Karla of Wamego; two daughters, Debra Engler of Topeka and Amy Reifsteck and husband Bill of Powell, Ohio; three step sons, Justin Bailey and wife Jolene of Pennsylvania, Troy Bailey and wife Kim of Manhattan and Travis Bailey and wife Lori of Pennsylvania; one brother, Jim Burkman and wife Linda of Tennessee; one sister, Bonnie Hanson of Salina; one brother-in-law, Jim Burgman of Salem, Missouri; one sister-in-law, Verna Burkman of Salem, Missouri; sixteen grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Russell Bailey, she was preceded in death by parents; one brother, Bill Burkman; one sister, Diana Bergman, and one brother-in-law, Ken Hanson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time on Tuesday.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Randolph Fancy Creek Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Manhattan Church of Christ and American Cancer Society.&nbsp; Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Carolyn Marie Bailey

Judy R. (Clark) Loberg, 82, passed away May 4, 2023, with her family by her side.

She was born January 1, 1941, in Manhattan, KS to Harvey and Glady Clark. She married the love of her life Donald (Don) Loberg August 25, 1957. Her dream was to get married and raise children. She accomplished this and so much more. Together they raised four children. Family meant everything to her. As her children grew and married, she welcomed new members to the family and proudly took on the role of Grandma.

She often times babysat her grandchildren while her children pursued their careers. Cooking, baking and sewing for her family were important to her. She always found reasons to have the entire family over even when the entire family outgrew her home. She still found ways to find a seat for everyone and ensure everyone felt welcomed and loved. On holidays she would gather the Grandkids for baking and candy making. She loved the laughter and noise the large family gatherings brought.

After her husband passed, she relocated to Birchwood Villas and found a new family of friends there. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don, her daughter Debbie Haffener, great-granddaughter Emma Jean Grutzmacher, and son in law, Steve Willard.

She is survived by her children Mark (Lisa) Loberg, Kim (Tim) Stielow, and Alan (Gloria) Loberg; her sister Carita Otts; eleven grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; additional family members including Ann (Lindsey) Brewer, Jenny (Andy) Nittler, sister-in-law Arlene Creviston and Travis Matteson and her many other family members and friends.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 4:00 until 5:30 Sunday May 14, 2023 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:00a.m. Monday May 15, 2023 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel. Inurnment will follow in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley.

Verlan Claire “Pee Wee” Covalt, age 90 of Riley, passed away Monday, May 1, 2023 at Stoneybrook Retirement Community in Manhattan.

He was born on June 8, 1932 in Morland, Kansas, the son of William Isaac and Myrtle Viola (Swisher) Covalt.&nbsp; He was baptized in the Morland United Methodist Church.

He married Patricia Louise Clark on June 11, 1955 at the Hill City United Methodist Church.&nbsp; They were married for 67 years.

Verlan was a mechanic and parts man for the Ford Dealer Lewis Motor Company for 13 years.&nbsp; He then worked for 30 years as a pipeliner for Mobil Oil Pipeline Company, retiring on May 1, 1993.&nbsp; He was a member of the Riley United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge Texas #445, Masonic Lodge Clay Center #134 and many Square Dance Clubs around the world.

Verlan and Patty travelled to all 50 states and 11 countries.&nbsp; He was a collector of anything and everything.&nbsp; He loved telling stories, fishing and decorating for the holidays.

He is survived by his wife Patty of the home; his three daughters, Juanita Covalt of Dansville, Michigan, Charlene Mitoska (Jim) of Leonardville and Phyllis Konen (Tim) of Dansville, Michigan; two sisters, Wilma Bean of St. Joseph, Michigan and Delpha Melton of Ordway, Colorado; six grandchildren, Anthony Mitoska (Karen), Andrew Mitoska, Brandi Pennell (Wes), Travis Konen (Kimberly), Alex Mitoska (Micayla) and Alyssa Mitoska; nine great grandchildren, Rileigh Mitoska, Trevor Lindley, Amelia Mitoska, Parker Cahill, Trinity Pennell, Izzabelle Pennell, Payton Mitoska, Mason Mitoska and Leighton Mitoska, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings, Ruth Doubleday, Pauline Morgan, Roy Covalt, Wehrle Covalt, Esther Stevenson, Charles Covalt and Betty Lou Covalt.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2023 at the Riley United Methodist Church with Pastors Bruce and Sandy Ferguson officiating.&nbsp; Inurnment will be in the Hill City Cemetery at a later date.

Verlan Claire 'Pee Wee' Covalt

Carolyn&nbsp;L. Moore, age 74,&nbsp;formerly&nbsp;of Barnes, Kansas,&nbsp;passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at her home in Lincoln, Nebraska,&nbsp;with her family by her side.&nbsp;

Carolyn was born February 13, 1949, in Marysville, to Walter N. and Neva J. (Wohler) Moore.&nbsp; She attended Barnes High School until her senior year, then&nbsp;graduated from Hanover High School.&nbsp; She went on to earn a degree in accounting from Brown Mackie College in Salina.&nbsp; She then worked forty-two years as an accountant for Kansas State University.&nbsp;

Carolyn was a member of the Barnes United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Friendship Circle.&nbsp; She served on the Barnes City Council, the Barnes High School Alumni Reunion Committee, and was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.&nbsp;

Carolyn always had an amazing and beautiful flower garden.&nbsp; In her younger days, she enjoyed doing needle work and macramé.&nbsp; Since retirement she enjoyed cryptograms, jigsaw puzzles and collecting antiques.&nbsp; Carolyn was a cat person all of her life and always had one or more cats in her home.&nbsp; Once she retired and no longer had a long daily commute, she also adopted the puppy that she had always wanted.&nbsp;

Survivors include her two sisters: June Nelson of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Donna (Bob) McDonough of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, two nieces: Amanda Walker of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Molly McDonough of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a nephew Jorgan Krug of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a great-niece Aubry.&nbsp;

Funeral services are planned for 1:00 pm, Monday, May 1, 2023, at the Barnes United Methodist Church with Pastor Debbie Senters officiating.&nbsp; Pastor Sandra Jellison-Knock will give a Eulogy.&nbsp; Congregational Hymns will include “Amazing Grace” and “In The Garden”, the musician will be Kim Oatney.&nbsp;&nbsp;Casket Bearers are Daryl Moore, Brian Walker, Nik Sedivey, Brian Turk, Seth Wurtz and Gene Huse.

Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery, west of Barnes.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Dreeanna Christie Hood was born on December 29, 1934 in St. Joseph, Missouri and passed to her heavenly home on May 4, 2023. She was 88 years old.

Dree was the firstborn to E.A. “Red” and Mildred Christie. She was a quiet, only child until almost 10 years later when she became a big sister, and a devoted, second Mom to her brother, Steve. The Christies lived in Missouri, Iowa and Tennessee where her “Daddy" worked for the Quaker Oats Company.

Dreeanna met the love of her life, Ed Hood, at the First Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They were married there after she finished her nursing degree at the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing (Class of 1956).

Once married, Ed was commissioned as a career officer in the United State Army, while Dree totally devoted herself to raising her children and nursing (night shift). Dree had four children: Kevin, Kelley, Christie and Scott. Ed and Dree raised their family traveling to Ed's next military assignment where Dree found hospital night shifts to work. By 1976, they had lived in Oklahoma, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Washington D.C., Thailand, Texas and finally Manhattan, Kansas. After 20 years of service, Ed retired from the military at Fort Riley and moved out to the country. Ed and Dree were married 62 years.

Dreeanna retired from Kansas State University's Lafene Health center as Clinical Director. She was an avid K-state sports fan. In their retirement, Ed and Dree were proud season ticket holders for the K-State women’s basketball team. Until her death, Dreeanna supported Ed’s love of horses, using their home outside Westmoreland to host whoever came in town to see Ed and his horses.

She is survived by her 4 children and brother, Steve, 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Dreeanna Christie Hood

David Umscheid, 58, died Friday after an extraordinary cancer battle. Dave received over 200 rounds of chemotherapy at KU Medical Center under the care of Dr. Raed Al-Rajabi. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, mental toughness, and unconditional love.

David was born to Julius and Marie Umscheid in 1964. He was the youngest of three and loved his siblings, Dan and Ruth Ann, dearly. Dave attended Flush Grade School and later graduated from Westmoreland High School and Emporia State University.

In 1988 Dave became a father to his first son, Joseph Sebastian Umscheid. Joseph now lives in Leavenworth, Kansas with a wife and three kids of his own. Joe loved his father with his whole heart and has treasured memories of his dad attending all those soccer games! He uses what his dad taught him as he continues raising his own children. Joe’s twins will turn 14 on the day of Dave’s funeral.

In 2005, Dave married Lindsey and together they have two sons, William (16) and Luke (14). Dave was a loving father who was always present in the lives of his children. He was so proud of William’s focus on schoolwork and loved watching and talking baseball with him. And nobody could make Dave laugh like Luke could. Luke brought Dave so much joy- especially during the hardest months. Dave will be deeply missed by these boys- they couldn’t have loved him more.

On December 17th, 2022, Dave and I celebrated 17 years of marriage. It was a wonderful 17 years; our home filled with so much love. Father Don Zimmerman married us on that cold December day, and he will be the one to lay Dave to rest at the Mass of Christian Burial on May 12th.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 10:00a.m. until 10:30a.m. Friday May 12, 2023 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Flush. The Rosary will be recited at 10:30a.m. and Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 11:00a.m. on Friday May 12 at the church. Interment will be at the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

 </figure>David Umscheid, 58, died Friday after an extraordinary cancer battle. Dave received over 200 rounds of chemotherapy at KU Medical Center under the care of Dr. Raed Al-Rajabi. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, mental toughness, and unconditional love.David was born to Julius and Marie Umscheid in 1964. He was the youngest of three and loved his siblings, Dan and Ruth Ann, dearly. Dave attended Flush Grade School and later graduated from Westmoreland High School and Emporia State University.In 1988 Dave became a father to his first son, Joseph Sebastian Umscheid. Joseph now lives in Leavenworth, Kansas with a wife and three kids of his own. Joe loved his father with his whole heart and has treasured memories of his dad attending all those soccer games! He uses what his dad taught him as he continues raising his own children. Joe’s twins will turn 14 on the day of Dave’s funeral.In 2005, Dave married Lindsey and together they have two sons, William (16) and Luke (14). Dave was a loving father who was always present in the lives of his children. He was so proud of William’s focus on schoolwork and loved watching and talking baseball with him. And nobody could make Dave laugh like Luke could. Luke brought Dave so much joy- especially during the hardest months. Dave will be deeply missed by these boys- they couldn’t have loved him more.On December 17th, 2022, Dave and I celebrated 17 years of marriage. It was a wonderful 17 years; our home filled with so much love. Father Don Zimmerman married us on that cold December day, and he will be the one to lay Dave to rest at the Mass of Christian Burial on May 12th.The family will greet friends during a visitation from 10:00a.m. until 10:30a.m. Friday May 12, 2023 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Flush. The Rosary will be recited at 10:30a.m. and Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 11:00a.m. on Friday May 12 at the church. Evelyn Faye Zeckser, 103, of Alma, Kansas, died peacefully on May 1, 2023, at McCrite Plaza. &nbsp;She was a life-long resident of Alma.

Evelyn was born January 13, 1920, in rural Alma, Kansas, the oldest daughter of John Henry and Ida Helen Heder Meyer. &nbsp;She married Elmer Zeckser on March 22, 1939, at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma. &nbsp;He preceded her in death on July 15, 2001.

She went to grade school in Alma, then, at 14 years old, worked for different families by cleaning houses and taking care of mothers with new babies. &nbsp;For this, she made $2 a week plus room and board. She was a housewife and a farm wife during most of the years their daughters were growing up. &nbsp;They had a large garden and she canned and froze anything and everything, sewed all their clothes, did embroidery and other handwork. &nbsp;Elmer and Evelyn raised cattle, hogs, chickens and registered quarter horses. &nbsp;Evelyn later worked for the Harvey House Café, the Rexall Drugstore for Francis Newton, and then for Milton Rubottom. &nbsp;Later, she babysat and worked in the laundry department at the Alma Manor.&nbsp; &nbsp; She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church her entire life, was secretary of the Walther League, belonged to the Friendship Circle, was a 4-H leader and a member of EHU, a home economics group. &nbsp;Some of Elmer and Evelyn’s most fun times were when they belonged to a local dance group in Alma back in the 1960’s.

Evelyn loved flowers and had a large flower garden that she was well-known for. &nbsp;In later years, she joined the group of hand quilters at the Wabaunsee County Museum and enjoyed the Thursday morning coffee group. &nbsp;Evelyn enjoyed doing the laundry (Monday was always laundry day), loved to read, and still did all her own cooking and, except for the last year, her own cleaning, but she especially liked to make cookies and other desserts because she wanted to have something on hand for coffee when she had company.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Thomas of Topeka; son-in-law, Adolph “Sam” Moege of Alma; six grandchildren: &nbsp;Terry Moege (Debbie), Valley Center, KS; Cheryl Markle (Fletcher), Arvada, CO; Shelly Bush (Daryl), Oklahoma City, OK; Kevin Thomas (Diane), Smithville, MO; Kurt Thomas (Karena), Topeka, KS; and Kris Thomas (Heather), Topeka, KS; 14 great-grandchildren; &nbsp;Matthew, Reagan, Will, Bridget, Sydney, Delanie, Braden, Nathan, Samantha, Lacee, Jerod, Savannah, Kristopher and JaCory; one great great grandson: &nbsp;Myles Reid Moege; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer Zeckser; her daughter, Carole Moege; a sister, Naomi Stuewe; and a brother, Melvin Meyer.

Evelyn will lie-in-state on Friday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church Memorial Hall in Alma. &nbsp;A visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., with the family, prior to the service. &nbsp;The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m., at St. John Lutheran Church in Alma with Rev. Robert Grimm officiating. &nbsp;Burial will follow in St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery. &nbsp;

Norma Mae Rosenow died on May 4, 2023, age 99, at the Lakeview Care Center in Lenexa, Kansas of complications from the Coronavirus.&nbsp;Norma was born on October 5, 1923, to James Hugo and Anna May Dawson of Russellville, Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;Norma grew up on a farm surrounded by many family members, friends, and animals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;After graduating from Eugene High School in 1941 Norma worked as a seamstress at a combat pants factory in Jefferson City, Missouri to support the WWII effort. On May 2, 1943, Norma married Lieutenant Richard V. Rosenow in Columbus, Georgia where Richard was stationed with the U.S. Army. During the next several years Norma and Richard lived in San Luis Obispo, California, Austin, Texas, and North Carolina. When Richard was sent by the U. S. Army to The Allied Stage of WWII in Europe, and to Japan in 1945, Norma returned to the family farm in Russellville.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;In 1946 Norma moved to Manhattan, Kansas where Richard earned a BS degree in agriculture from Kansas State University.&nbsp;In 1948 they moved to Council Grove, Kansas where Richard worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. In 1950 they were relocated to Alma, Kansas where Norma lived until 2018.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;Norma served as the Alma Brownie Troupe leader in 1950-51.&nbsp;She was a member of Chapter No. 270 Order of the Eastern Star of Alma, later the Beulah Chapter No. 34 Order of the Eastern Star of Topeka, the American Legion Post No. 32 of Alma, and the Alma United Methodist Church.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp;Norma was preceded in death by her parents, a brother James S. Dawson, a sister Aulma Alberts, and her husband Richard on May 31, 2004.

&nbsp; &nbsp;Norma is survived by a son Mitchell Paul (Ronette) of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; a daughter Tanya Lee Litke (Herbert) of Overland Park, Kansas;&nbsp;&nbsp;grandson Francis “Frank” Vernon Rosenow (Trina) of New Richmond, Ohio; great-grandson Derek Layne Rosenow of Fairfield, Ohio; great-granddaughters Elizabeth Nicole Rosenow, New Richmond, Ohio and Sarah Lynn Lewis (Chad) of Felicity, Ohio; great-great grandsons Tobias Grey Lewis and Saul Matthew Lewis, Felicity, Ohio;&nbsp;&nbsp;and great-great-granddaughter Emilee Reign Rosenow, Cincinnati, Ohio.&nbsp;

Michael Leroy Swaim, Sr, 79, of Morganville, KS died Tuesday, April 25th, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House, in Manhattan. &nbsp;He worked with the Clay Center Housing Authority in the maintenance and repair department.

Michael was born in Junction City, on November 22, 1943, the son of the late Lillian Loraine (Anderson) and Clyde O. Swaim. &nbsp;He was joined in marriage to Betty Jean Knox on June 10, 1963 in Salina. &nbsp;He graduated from high school in Herlong, Nevada, and was a veteran, serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War.

Michael is &nbsp;survived by three sons Michael L. (Christine) Swaim, of Clay Center, KS; &nbsp;Lenny (Melissa) Swaim of McPherson; Dennis Swaim of Washington, Kansas. &nbsp;Also surviving are two brothers, Clyde Swaim, of Henderson, NV; &nbsp;Dennis R. Swaim, of Salina; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Michael is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty, and his second wife, Margaret Long Swaim.

A private family inurnment will be at a later date, the family suggests memorials to the Meadowlark Hospice, 709 Liberty, Clay Center, Kansas.

Ruth "Diane" Hopkins, 70, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on April 27, 2023 at Stormont Vail - Flint Hills Campus in Junction City, Kansas. Cremation will take place. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date. Diane was born August 20, 1952, in Victoria, Texas the daughter of William Hubert and Helen Louise (Mouser) Kite. Diane was a factory worker and housekeeper for many years. She enjoyed sewing and fishing. She married Larry David Hopkins December 27, 1990 in Brownwood, Texas. He passed away April 15, 2023 in Brownwood. Survivors include two sons, William F. Cody of Burdett, Kansas and Billy Joe Cody of Rockdale, Texas; one daughter, Victoria Nelson and her husband Rick of Junction City, Kansas; two step-children, Jason Hopkins and Christine Merrick both of California; two brothers, Joe William Kite and Walter Kite; five sisters, Janice Smith, Mozzell Kite, Serena Allen, Sara Lutz and Nona Kite; eight grandchildren, Kynthia, David, Zackery, Sarha, Nathen, Ivy, Cordell and Rose; ten great-grandchildren, Chassidy, Derek, Theron, Carter, Isabella, Kristopher, Kynthea, Sophie, Axl and Juanita.  Bean passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023, at the age of 91. Joyce was
 born February 2, 1932, in Ringwood, Oklahoma, to Delmer and Dytha Lee. 
She was the fourth child of five siblings. She began her journey in 
Oklahoma and Kansas, moving to Klamath Falls, OR in the fifth grade, where 
she attended Roosevelt Elementary, Fremont Junior High, and Klamath 
Union High School. After high school, she worked as a car hop, a nurse's
 aide, in retail sales, and as a pharmacy clerk at Suburban Drug, where 
she met her future husband, Nate. They were married for 56 years. She 
also sold Home Interior, eventually owning and operating her own 
business: "Silks and Such", previously located in the Medical Dental 
Building in downtown Klamath Falls.

With her love of people, Joyce enjoyed volunteer work, including 
Bluebird and Cub Scout leader; homeroom mom, and School Friends program.
 Also, she volunteered as a Teacher's Helper, including the Smart 
Reading Program for over 10 years.

Joyce was very social, and an active member who held several officer 
positions in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Elkettes. She also enjoyed
 the Red Hat Society, along with her lunch buddies and her KUHS reunion 
committee.

Loves of her life are her children, grandchildren, and 
great-grandchildren. She was very patriotic, loyal, and fun-loving. 
Joyce was known for her quick wit and sense of humor. Her hobbies were 
ceramics, interior decorating, writing pen-pals letters, gardening, 
bowling, creating flower arrangements, and playing cards. Her favorite 
activity was dancing.

Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, Nathan (Nate) Bean, and 
her infant daughter, Janice Pennington; as well as her parents, Delmer 
and Dytha Lee; two brothers, infant Jimmy Lee and Bobby Lee.

Joyce is survived by her daughter Judy (Randy) Hunter, Klamath Falls;
 son Bill (Ruth) Bean; six grandchildren, Darren (Tara) Hunter, Danielle
 (Chris) Schweigert, Derek (Cassie) Hunter, Stephanie (Josh) Bean, Mindy
 (Nick) Schindler, and Tyler (Carmen) Bean; seven great-grandchildren, 
Saige and Aspen Schweigert, Noah Bean, River Judah and Marleigh Hunter 
and Nataleigh Hunter. Brother Bill (Leo) Lee, Junction City, and sister 
Flavia Petersen, Eugene, with numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held May 2, 2023 at 11:00 am at 
O'Hair-Wards Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made 
in honor of Joyce Bean to the Klamath Falls Smart Reading Program, at 
803 Main St. #404, Klamath Falls, OR 97601.

 born February 2, 1932, in Ringwood, Oklahoma, to Delmer and Dytha Lee. 
She was the fourth child of five siblings. She began her journey in 
Oklahoma and Kansas, moving to Klamath Falls, OR in the fifth grade, where 
she attended Roosevelt Elementary, Fremont Junior High, and Klamath 
Union High School. After high school, she worked as a car hop, a nurse's
 aide, in retail sales, and as a pharmacy clerk at Suburban Drug, where 
she met her future husband, Nate. They were married for 56 years. She 
also sold Home Interior, eventually owning and operating her own 
business: "Silks and Such", previously located in the Medical Dental 
Building in downtown Klamath Falls.With her love of people, Joyce enjoyed volunteer work, including 
Bluebird and Cub Scout leader; homeroom mom, and School Friends program.
 Also, she volunteered as a Teacher's Helper, including the Smart 
Reading Program for over 10 years.Joyce was very social, and an active member who held several officer 
positions in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Elkettes. She also enjoyed
 the Red Hat Society, along with her lunch buddies and her KUHS reunion 
committee.Loves of her life are her children, grandchildren, and 
great-grandchildren. She was very patriotic, loyal, and fun-loving. 
Joyce was known for her quick wit and sense of humor. Her hobbies were 
ceramics, interior decorating, writing pen-pals letters, gardening, 
bowling, creating flower arrangements, and playing cards. Her favorite 
activity was dancing.Joyce is preceded in death by her husband, Nathan (Nate) Bean, and 
her infant daughter, Janice Pennington; as well as her parents, Delmer 
and Dytha Lee; two brothers, infant Jimmy Lee and Bobby Lee.Joyce is survived by her daughter Judy (Randy) Hunter, Klamath Falls;
 son Bill (Ruth) Bean; six grandchildren, Darren (Tara) Hunter, Danielle
 (Chris) Schweigert, Derek (Cassie) Hunter, Stephanie (Josh) Bean, Mindy
 (Nick) Schindler, and Tyler (Carmen) Bean; seven great-grandchildren, 
Saige and Aspen Schweigert, Noah Bean, River Judah and Marleigh Hunter 
and Nataleigh Hunter. Brother Bill (Leo) Lee, Junction City, and sister 
Flavia Petersen, Eugene, with numerous nieces and nephews.A Celebration of Life will be held May 2, 2023 at 11:00 am at

Charles “Charlie” McKinzie, 80, went to be with his Lord and Savior, 
Thursday, April 20th, 2023. He was born to Charles and Violet (Turley) 
McKinzie in Welch, OK. 
Charlie was a graduate of Oklahoma State University where he (to the 
chagrin of Ruthie and his mother) rode bulls and clowned on the rodeo 
team. Soon after Charlie and Ruthie got married, Charlie was drafted 
into the US Army, serving in the Vietnam conflict.

Charlie spent most of
 his adult life managing COOP grain elevators in Mayfield, Wellington, 
and Clearwater as an employee of Farmland. During their 40 years in 
Wellington, Charlie and Ruthie built a community of friends who were 
more like family. For many years, this group met monthly to play “pitch”
 and share meals. They were all like family to the McKinzies. Charlie 
was a farmer at his core. Although he didn’t farm or ranch directly in 
his adult life, he was always attentive to the farmers and community and
 he saw beauty in the seasonal ebbs and flows. He loved to “car farm” 
and his kids remember the many quiet quips he made while driving on 
family vacations about how the corn was looking dry, or the wheat was 
sprouting too soon, or how “that field is so full of junk, they’ll be 
lucky to get 10 bushel an acre out of it!” After his retirement, Charlie
 devoted much time to his lifelong hobby of fishing (or at least 
collecting fishing gear). He also enjoyed going on cruises to Alaska, 
volunteering with his church, and in the last few years riding his 
stationary bike 55-75 miles a day. He was a devoted fan of his OSU 
Cowboys and the St. Louis Cardinals. But the farm never fully left the 
farmer and he still tended his small patch of earth with dedication and 
care. Whether it was a lawn pristinely mowed and edged, a garden, or 
even just plants and flowers in the flower beds. Charlie was an example 
of what stewardship of the earth looked like. He always believed that he
 was simply the care-taker for a time and that creation was ours only to
 steward for the next generation. His passions in retirement were 
spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren. 

Charlie 
was a member of the Rose Hill Christian Church and enjoyed serving 
actively with his amazing family of faith. He will be remembered for his
 generous and kind spirit, his devotion to his family, and his 
unshakable faith. Charlie could be summed up in three simple words: 
family, faith, and farming. 
He was preceded in death by his father Charles Sylvester McKinzie; 
mother Violet McKinzie; brothers Jimmy McKinzie and Earnest McKinzie; 
and sister Agnes Lloyd. 
Charlie is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years Ruthie of Derby, KS; 
Children Su-Ella McKinzie of Manhattan, KS; Tina (Todd) Gardner of 
Derby, KS; and Charles II (Carrie) McKinzie of Winfield, KS. Also left 
to cherish his memory, are five grandchildren: Justin, Joshua, Cambria, 
Catriona, and Charles III; siblings Wanda (Jack) Nickerson of Republic, 
MO; Shirley Hall of Broken Arrow, OK; Kenneth (Gail) McKinzie of Grove, 
OK; Cindy (Terry) Harlan of Joplin, MO; sister-in-law Janna Beth 
McKinzie of Pueblo CO; and many other relatives and friends. 
Memorial Service: 1:00 pm, Friday April 28th, 2023, at Rose HIll 
Christian Church, 314 N. Rose Hill Rd. Rose Hill, KS 67133. Interment to
 follow at 3:00 pm at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery at 1208 N. College 
St Winfield, KS 67156.

Charles 'Charlie' McKinzie

Catherine Rose Willard, 72, of Manhattan, Kansas, 
died Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House. &nbsp;She
 was a long-time resident of the community. Cathy was born on December 1, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois, the 
daughter of Vincent J. and Catherine (Docas) Briguglio. &nbsp;She attended 
local grade school and graduated in 1968 from Notre Dame Catholic High 
School. &nbsp;Cathy worked for the FBI in Chicago. Cathy married James 
Michael Willard on January 24, 1971, in Chicago. &nbsp;After over forty-three
 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on July 19, 2014. Mike was a career Navy personnel, and he and Cathy were stationed
 in numerous places in the states and around the world. &nbsp;After their 
retirement from the military, they moved to Manhattan where she worked 
thirty-seven years for Riley County. &nbsp;First in Treasurer’s Office and 
then in the County Appraiser’s Office. &nbsp;Cathy also worked in customer 
service at the mall and was a successful Tupperware representative. Cathy
 was a member of St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center. &nbsp;She loved to 
read and was an avid writer. &nbsp;She enjoyed making Christmas stockings for
 her family and was known for her wonderful meals, especially her 
lasagna and spaghetti. Over the years Cathy had several pet dogs that 
she loved like family. Cathy is survived by her son, Michael Willard and his wife, 
Elaine, and her grandchildren, Macey Willard and Mason Willard, all of 
Manhattan. &nbsp;She is also survived by her sister, Virginia Specchio 
(Frank) and sister-in-law, Amy Briguglio, both of Des Plaines, Illinois.
 &nbsp;She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Leonard 
Briguglio. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, May 
2, 2023, at St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center in Manhattan. &nbsp;Father 
Gale Hammerschmidt will be the Celebrant. &nbsp;Burial will follow in Wamego 
City Cemetery. &nbsp;Cathy will lie-in-state beginning at 3:00 pm, Monday,

Dorothy
 was born September 2, 1936, to Dillis and Verla (Banks) Shearer in 
Council Grove.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dorothy was married to Kenny Owen and they 
divorced.&nbsp;&nbsp;She married Dan Moege on June 21, 1971, in Council 
Grove.&nbsp;&nbsp;They made their home on Dan’s family farm in Alma. She was a 
member of the First Baptist Church in Council Grove and the Spring Creek
 Community Club. Dorothy owned&nbsp;and operated&nbsp;a quilting business. She and
 Dan attended craft shows&nbsp;selling her beautiful&nbsp;quilts, tepees, quillos,
 hand towels, halos and Yo-Yo balloons. She custom quilted for several 
people&nbsp;all&nbsp;over the US, as well as several foreign countries 
including&nbsp;Germany, Canada and England. Dorothy loved&nbsp;gardening.&nbsp;&nbsp;Her 
garden included flowers&nbsp;and vegetables.&nbsp;&nbsp;She also&nbsp;canned, helping Dan 
bale hay&nbsp;all while&nbsp;being a housewife, mother and grandmother.&nbsp;

She was preceded in death by her parents,&nbsp;a&nbsp;son Ricky Owen,&nbsp;a&nbsp;grandson Nicholas and&nbsp;a&nbsp;sister Glenda Rae Shearer.&nbsp;

Charles 'Ken' Spencer

Richard E. "Coach" Towers, 92, of Manhattan, passed away on 
Sunday, April 23rd, 2023, at his home following complications from Multiple 
Myeloma. He was a retired Athletic Director and Coach.

Richard
 Ephraim Towers was born in Kansas City, KS on February 10, 1931, the 
son of the late Mabel Daisy (Stitt) and Guy McKinley Towers. He and Wann
 Harwood of Manhattan, KS were married on August 9, 1953, in Manhattan at
 Danforth Chapel. Dick was raised in Olathe, Kansas graduating from 
Olathe High School in 1949. He was a football and track standout at 
Kansas State University, receiving bachelor's and master’s degrees in 
education and administration.

Helping
 others was a driving force for Coach Towers.  He was known for his 
great storytelling, being the “activities director” for many family 
gatherings, leading the birthday song at his Vista Coffee Group, and 
cheering on his golf and fishing buddies. He was an active member of the
 First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.

As
 an athlete his teammates voted him ”Most Inspirational Player." As a 
football coach his peers selected him Coach of the Year at the High 
School, Junior College, and NCAA Division 1 district level.

ROTC
 took him to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, after graduation from Kansas State. He 
then began his football coaching career, with stops at Leavenworth High 
School and Manhattan High School. His 1961 Manhattan High school team 
was crowned state champions, and these players continue to maintain a 
special relationship to this day.

His
 college coaching career took him from KSU to Southern Illinois 
University and finally Duke University.  Athletic administration brought
 him back to Kansas in 1977 where Dick was assistant superintendent of 
schools and athletic director in Great Bend. Following that, he returned
 to his alma mater as athletic director and was instrumental in landing 
KSU’s first bowl game bid. He finished his career at Iowa State 
University in athletic administration.

After
 retirement he and his son Rick developed Sand Creek Self Storage east 
of Manhattan. During this period Dick was able to focus on enjoying life
 with his wife Wann, enjoying many fantastic trips, family vacations, 
fishing adventures and innumerable rounds of golf.

In
 1995, Dick won the Senior Golf Championship at Indian Hills Country Club
 in Mission Hills, Kansas. It was one of his many golfing 
accomplishments along with a few holes in one.

He
 valued the wonderful relationship he had with his sisters, children and
 their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, along with his 
nieces and nephews. Dick cherished his friendships with colleagues, 
classmates and former players.

Dick
 is  survived by his wife of 69 years, Wann, two daughters, Betsy 
(Larry) Shapiro, of Morristown, NJ;  Donna Hemingway, of West Branch, 
Iowa; son, Rick (Sheila)Towers, of Rossville;  two sisters, Lillian 
Partis, of Ottawa, KS; Janiece Towers, of Manhattan;  also surviving are
 seven grandchildren, Becky (Chris) Radich, Jessie Shapiro, Jon 
Hemingway, Emily (DoHun) Kim, David Towers, Austin (Mandy) Floersch and 
Emmy (Jason) Sedlacek; and nine great grandchildren. Coach Towers is 
preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Louise Hyer and LaVaun 
Miller; his brother, Charles Towers, and his son-in-law Paul Hemingway 
and grandson Loren Hemingway.

The family will receive 
friends from 10:00 am until the memorial service begins at 11:00 AM on 
Saturday, April 29th, at the First Presbyterian Church. 800 Leavenworth 
St, with Rev Jason Pittman officiating.  Following the service all are 
invited to attend a tailgate lunch party and storytelling time at the 
Presby Place located at the church. The service will be streaming live 
on YouTube @firstpresmanhattan

 Danforth Chapel. Dick was raised in Olathe, Kansas graduating from 
Olathe High School in 1949. He was a football and track standout at 
Kansas State University, receiving bachelor's and master’s degrees in 
education and administration.Helping
 others was a driving force for Coach Towers. He was known for his 
great storytelling, being the “activities director” for many family 
gatherings, leading the birthday song at his Vista Coffee Group, and 
cheering on his golf and fishing buddies. He was an active member of the
 First Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.As
 an athlete his teammates voted him ”Most Inspirational Player." As a 
football coach his peers selected him Coach of the Year at the High 
School, Junior College, and NCAA Division 1 district level.ROTC
 took him to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, after graduation from Kansas State. He 
then began his football coaching career, with stops at Leavenworth High 
School and Manhattan High School. His 1961 Manhattan High school team 
was crowned state champions, and these players continue to maintain a 
special relationship to this day.His
 college coaching career took him from KSU to Southern Illinois 
University and finally Duke University. Athletic administration brought
 him back to Kansas in 1977 where Dick was assistant superintendent of 
schools and athletic director in Great Bend. Following that, he returned
 to his alma mater as athletic director and was instrumental in landing 
KSU’s first bowl game bid. He finished his career at Iowa State 
University in athletic administration.After
 retirement he and his son Rick developed Sand Creek Self Storage east 
of Manhattan. During this period Dick was able to focus on enjoying life
 with his wife Wann, enjoying many fantastic trips, family vacations, 
fishing adventures and innumerable rounds of golf.In
 1995, Dick won the Senior Golf Championship at Indian Hills Country Club
 in Mission Hills, Kansas. It was one of his many golfing 
accomplishments along with a few holes in one.He
 valued the wonderful relationship he had with his sisters, children and
 their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, along with his 
nieces and nephews. Dick cherished his friendships with colleagues, 
classmates and former players.Dick
 is survived by his wife of 69 years, Wann, two daughters, Betsy 
(Larry) Shapiro, of Morristown, NJ; Donna Hemingway, of West Branch, 
Iowa; son, Rick (Sheila)Towers, of Rossville; two sisters, Lillian 
Partis, of Ottawa, KS; Janiece Towers, of Manhattan; also surviving are
 seven grandchildren, Becky (Chris) Radich, Jessie Shapiro, Jon 
Hemingway, Emily (DoHun) Kim, David Towers, Austin (Mandy) Floersch and 
Emmy (Jason) Sedlacek; and nine great grandchildren. Coach Towers is 
preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Louise Hyer and LaVaun 
Miller; his brother, Charles Towers, and his son-in-law Paul Hemingway 
and grandson Loren Hemingway.The family will receive 
friends from 10:00 am until the memorial service begins at 11:00 AM on 
Saturday, April 29th, at the First Presbyterian Church. 800 Leavenworth 
St, with Rev Jason Pittman officiating. Following the service all are 
invited to attend a tailgate lunch party and storytelling time at the

Coach Dick Towers

Mary Aron, née Lilly, passed away 23 April. Born 23 June 1940, third of 
13 kids, as an older sibling growing up she developed the personality 
traits she's been recognized for throughout her life- compassion, 
caring, generosity, and being an absolute assassin while competing at 
family board games. 
The adventure's next phase started after marrying her high school 
sweetheart Bill. The life of a military family is never boring, and Mary
 had her two children Shai and Kenny while moving around the world for 
almost twenty years. "Home is where your mom is" was our philosophy and 
she made a home of wherever we lived whether it was quarters in Fort 
Eustis, an apartment in Stuttgart with high-speed police chases, or 
eventually to a restored farmhouse in Chapman KS where we graduated High
 School while dad deployed to Korea. There were many more stops in 
between but we always had "home," each other, and our eyes on the next 
adventure. 
The later Chapman phase added kid-in-law's John Trotter (Shai) and Becky
 Wells (Kenny), and grandkids with Nicole, Jessica, and Jason Beck 
coming into the family, then not long after Keith and Kenton Aron + 
Chris and David Garrison. One well-earned retirement later brought the 
last move to Abilene and added Tommy and Lewis Trotter. After some 
grands were married (Jessica to Joe Ehrlich, Chris to Kamella, and David
 to Heather) they started cranking out the great-grands, with the last 
count around 9 of them- Kayleigh, Sean, Piper, Tye, Kenslie, Kimberly, 
Ellie, Fisher, and Nora. Somehow the lax discipline which Mom showed 
the grandkids became even laxer with the greats, which none of us 
considered possible. She maintained a "tub of unlimited sweets" where 
the little ones knew they could grab a snack cake whenever they wanted; 
where was this when we kids were growing up? 
Although she pretended to give equal consideration to KU with her "house
 divided" propaganda, she repeatedly confided in me that was just for 
show and KSU was the unadulterated recipient of her loyalty. I had to 
break this news gently to our first Emporia student, Lewis. 
Mary's heart was forever broken three years ago, almost to the day when 
Bill passed away. She personally placed flowers on his grave up to the 
week she passed. The next phase of the adventure begins. 
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M., Monday, May 1, 2023, at First 
Christian Church of Abilene with Pastor Jason Kohler. Burial will 
follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. Friends may come by Danner Funeral
 Home on Sunday from 9AM until 5PM to sign the register book.

 The 
family suggests memorials be given to the First Christian Church of 
Abilene.  Memorial may be dropped off at the funeral home or mailed to

Mary Aron

Jack Richard Jankovich, 91, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away at Good 
Shepherd Hospice on April 4, 2023, after a long bout with Dementia. He 
was born on July 30, 1931, in Gary, Indiana, the middle of three sons 
born to Nick and Winifred (Morris) Jankovich.

Jack was 
raised in Gary, Indiana working at his father’s airport, the Gary 
Municipal Airport, from the time he was in grade school until graduation
 from Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana. This is where he and his
 brothers found their love of flying, which he maintained throughout his
 life.

In high school, he participated in basketball and
 track, lettering three times in both sports and was a member of the 
Indiana State Championship mile relay team. In high school he met his 
one and only love, our mom, Ann Geoghegan. After high school he was 
recruited to run track at LSU, Michigan State, and Indiana University 
where he was a multi-year letterman. He graduated with a degree in 
Geology from Indiana University in 1953. After graduation he was drafted
 into the U.S. Army, in processing at Fort Riley, Kansas, then completed 
basic training at Ft. Bliss, Texas, being promoted to corporal and 
assigned to an anti-aircraft battery at Fort Hamilton, as a radar 
operator, protecting New York Harbor.

On January 22, 
1954, he married Ann Geoghegan, in her parent’s home and then moved to 
his duty station in New York. Upon his honorable discharge, Jack went to 
work for Pontiac Motor Division in Los Angeles, CA, where they had their
 first son, Richard. In 1956, the family moved back to Gary, IN to begin
 working at the family airport. The family stayed in the region with 
homes in Gary and Hammond, where they had their second son Timothy. The 
family moved to Overland Park, Kansas in 1964 when Jack returned to 
Pontiac as a corporate Service Representative. While in Overland Park, 
Jack also served on the Lenexa Public School Board for two years.

In
 1967, Jack purchased the former Curry Pontiac and the family moved to 
Manhattan, Kansas, and Key Pontiac Inc. was formed, located in downtown 
Manhattan. In 1970, a new dealership was built and moved to the current 
location on Stagg Hill Road, now known as Briggs Automotive Inc. In 
1984 Key Inc. (Pontiac, Buick, GMC Truck and Nissan) was sold and Jack 
began teaching as an adjunct at KSU teaching Small Business Operations 
in the College of Business and later in the College of Agriculture. He 
also went to work for the local SBDC for many years. In 1986, he founded
 JART, Inc. selling aviation promotional items and products nationally. 
He retired and sold JART in 2019.

Jack is survived by 
his sons Rich and his wife Caroline of Manhattan, Tim and his wife Cindy
 of Dallas, Texas, his brother Bill and his wife Nancy of Racine, 
Wisconsin, grandchildren, Jillian (husband Will) Moore of McPherson, 
Kansas, Nick (wife Rachael) Jankovich of Manhattan, Katelin Reeves 
(husband James Richardson) of Carmel, Indiana, Michael Jankovich of 
Lawrence, Kansas, great grandchildren Elizabeth and Abigail Moore (Jill 
and Will), Daniel and Simon Jankovich (Nick and Rachael), his nephews 
Jim Daubenheyer of Valparaiso, Indiana and Dave Daubenheyer of Las 
Vegas, Nevada. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 59+ years, Ann 
Jankovich, his parents, in-laws, brother Bob and sister-in-law Ilene 
Jankovich.

Until recent years Jack was an avid cyclist 
who could be seen peddling down Kimball Avenue at dawn or in the hottest
 part of the day with his yellow caution vest and flag flying high! We 
will miss Papa’s famous waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, his
 beautiful birthday/wedding cakes, his rendition of Happy Birthday on 
each of our birthdays and how he would greet us with his mischievous 
grin whenever we came to “The House That Jack Built” to celebrate 
together!

The family is holding a private graveside service/interment on Monday, May 15, 2023.

In

Jack R. Jankovich

Tiffany Lynne Brightbill, 56, of West Lawn, Pa., passed away on 
April 23, 2023, at Reading Hospital. Born in Reading Pa. She was the 
daughter of Robert A. Mumma, husband of Cheryl Talarico, and Sandra A. 
(Miller) Baker. She was the loving wife of Keith Brightbill for 22 
years. 
A graduate of Muhlenberg High School, Class of 1985, Tiffany continued 
her education at Harcum College where she studied to become a dental 
hygienist. She later graduated with honors at RACC where she studied to 
become a registered respiratory therapist, working at the Reading 
Hospital and Medical Center for 20 years. 
Tiffany will be remembered as being compassionate and always willing to 
help others. She loved to scrapbook, spend her days at the beach, 
listening to country music, particularly Keith Urban, but most of all, 
being a devoted mother and grandmother. 
Surviving along with her husband and parents are a sister, Christy L. 
Mumma, Darlington, SC, step-siblings Chaudene (husband Thomas) Michalek,
 Breinigsville, PA, Vincent (wife Claudia) Baker, Carson, IA, children 
Matthew M. Morrissey, Shillington, Reid A. Reinhart, (fiancée Gina C. 
Oliveri), Lancaster PA, Sarah B. Pagotto (Reinhart) wife of Andrew B.

 She moved to Wichita with her children in 1960. She married Eugene Ray
 Shirley on December 19, 1966, in Salina. The family moved to Chapman 
in January 1970. 
Jackie passed away of natural causes on Friday, April 21, in Auburn, Kansas, at the age of 91. Survivors include her children John T. Hatcher Jr. of Topeka, Myrtice Jacqueline Audiss of 
Enterprise, Alabama, Dianne Lovey Tweedy of Salina, Marion Aridane 
Parker of Leavenworth, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. 
 She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene on May 31, 2003, 
daughter Lily Rozell Doviak, son Smith Taylor Hatcher, sister Ruth 
Tooman, and three brothers Wayne Gay and Charles Gay, and Gerald Gay. 
Graveside services will be at 1:00 pm Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at St. 
Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Chapman with Pastor Patrick Garlock
