Blue Jays win their season opening game

It took two overtimes, but the Junction City Blue Jays defeated the Seaman Vikings 70-67 in Topeka Friday night in the season opener for both boys basketball teams.

Junction City had opportunities to put the game away earlier, but a dropped pass, three second lane call, a travel call on a dunk attempt made it tough for the Blue Jays who picked up  the victory despite trailing by nine points in the first quarter.  At the end of the first overtime the Vikings made one of two free throws to tie the game, but because of the missed free throw the contest was extended into a second overtime with Junction City finally getting the win.

Howard Johnson led the Blue Jays with 22 points while Chris Dixon, Austin Smith  and Chaz Ruffin all scored 12 points for Junction City. The Blue Jays also had to overcome foul difficulties to get the win. A total of 28 fouls were called on the Junction City.

There were not any games between the schools Friday night. The Seaman girls team has been quarantined due to COVID-19. Junction City boys and girls teams will host Topeka High on Tuesday.
