The Junction City High School USD 475 boy’s swimming team recently had two individuals and two relays qualify for the Kansas State High School Activities Association Boys State Championships in Topeka next month.

The Blue Jays have now had a representative at state, which will take place on Feb. 16-17 at the Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka, each of the last five years.

“We are super proud of these boys. They have worked so hard and have really weathered all of the cancelled meets and practices. It all came together for us,” said Anna Schlesener, JCHS head coach.

Earning a trip to state was the 200-medley relay with a blistering time of 1:48.69. The quartet consisted of Ivan Velarde, Creytin Sanner, Noah Lamb and Truman Fortner. The Blue Jays also qualified in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:36.81.

Individually, Sanner, who will head to state for a second-straight year, qualified in the 100 breast stroke after clocking a time of 1:04.17. Lamb will also represent JCHS in Topeka, competing in the 100 fly with a time of 56.58.

By the duo qualifying for state, it marks the first time in Schlesener’s 13-year career she has had two individuals advance to the state meet.

“This senior class is one of the best I have ever coached. It has been a few years since we have had an individual qualify and Noah and Creytin came in with a positive mindset, which helped them come out with qualifying times. We couldn’t be prouder,” said Schlesener.
