Blue Jays hold off Washburn Rural, Lady Jays fall to Junior Blues

The Junction City Lady Jays were defeated by the Washburn Rural Junior Blues on Tuesday night by a final score of 58-31. It was both teams first action back on the hardwood following Christmas break. 

After scoring only five points in the first quarter, the Lady Jays offense came alive, but they could not match the shooting and overall play by the Junior Blues. 

Junction City was led in scoring by sophomore, Kalia Riley. It was her first start of the season, and she led the team with nine points. Senior Sara Rexrode finished the game with seven points, and fellow senior Amyah Oneal finished with six points. 

With the loss, the Lady Jays fall to 0-7 on the season, meanwhile, Washburn Rural improves to 5-1. 

Boys recap

It was a thrilling 51-48 win for the Junction City Blue Jay basketball team as their undefeated season continues on. After a slow start, and being tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Blue Jays came to life and led 27-20 at halftime. They never gave up their lead despite many comeback attempts by Washburn Rural. 

Junction City only saw two players score in double-digits. Junior Jackson Austin finished the game with 13 points, including a clutch free throw with 3.4 seconds left to extend the Blue Jay lead to three points. Sophomore Lovell Autry finished the game with 12 points, and then several other players pitched in, including senior Stewart Mitchell. He scored six points and played more minutes than he has all season due to foul trouble for Junction City. 

With the win, Junction City improves to 7-0. The Washburn Rural Junior Blues fall to 0-6. 

Both Junction City High School teams will travel to Manhattan to take on the Indians this Friday, January 5.
