KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects for alleged theft after a high speed chase.

Just after 4a.m. Thursday, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office received an alarm call from a gas station in Archie, Missouri, south of Kansas City, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

Deputies located a vehicle and a pursuit ensued. Deputies stopped the suspect vehicle on Interstate 49 just south of J Highway using the Grappler Device.

 Two men fled the vehicle on foot. Deputies recovered a handgun and ATM from the scene. They also eventually located and took both suspects&nbsp; into custody and transported them to the Cass County Jail. Names of the suspects have not been released.

Deputies recover ATM, make arrest after chase near Kansas City

RUSSELL COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on multiple charges after a traffic stop in Russell County.

Just after 7 a.m. Thursday, Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents and investigators executed search warrants at two properties in Russell, Kansas, and on a vehicle that KHP stopped along I-70, around 3 miles east of Dorrance, according to a media release from the KBI.

The vehicle was occupied by Richard Kerns, 63, of Russell, and Beverly Driscoll, 65, of Russell.

During the searches, law enforcement located over 2.5 pounds of methamphetamine, and approximately 15 firearms.

Kerns and Driscoll were arrested on requested charges that include distribution of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with the intent to distribute on or within 1,000 feet of a school, and several weapons violations. They were booked into the Russell County Jail.

KBI finds meth, 15 firearms after investigation 

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of burglaries and made an arrest.

Just after 12:15a.m. Feb. 21, a vigilant citizen observed a white 2013 Kia Optima driving through a neighborhood in the 5000 block of NW Sterling Chase Drive in Topeka, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The two men inside the vehicle were wearing masks and continuously turning the vehicle lights on and off. Deputies responded to the area and located the vehicle in the 4200 block of NW Dondee Lane. The vehicle had a tag that was reported stolen through the City of Topeka.

Deputies took the two men into custody on scene.

Ashton L. Huffstutler, 20, and Parker L. Larson, 19, both of Topeka, were booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. Huffstutler was held on requested charges of burglary, theft, criminal damage to property, possession of stolen property, no vehicle liability insurance and improper turn. Larson was booked on requested charges that include multiple counts of burglary, theft and possession of stolen property.

During the investigation, information was gathered regarding multiple vehicle burglaries that occurred on NW 52nd Terrace, NW 53rd Terrace, NW Sterling Chase Drive, NW Geronimo Trail and NW Kendall Drive.

The suspects are no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

Deputies catch two wanted for series of Kansas burglaries

JOHNSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities including the FBI are investigating a bank robbery have made an arrest.

Just before 4:30p.m.&nbsp; Thursday, the Chase Bank branch at 4700 W 119th Street was robbed, according to a media release from Leawood Police.

Within two hours, police took the suspect into custody. Police have not released the suspect's name or possible charges.

Police make arrest 2 hours after Kansas bank robbery

MONTGOMERY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on multiple allegations after a standoff.

The Coffeyville Police Dept. arrested 38-year-old Timothy Padilla of Coffeyville at a residence in the 1100 block of west 3rd street.

Just after 2a.m. Feb. 18, a police officer attempted to make contact with 38-year-old Timothy Padilla in the 1100 block of west 3rd street in Coffeyville, according to a media release.

 The officer was aware that Padilla had outstanding warrants for felony drug charges. Padilla fled from the officer and ran into a residence in that area. 

Officers formed a perimeter around the residence with the assistance from deputies of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Officers then began making announcements for the suspect to surrender. Other occupants of the residence exited and confirmed Padilla had run into the home.

After several hours with no contact from Padilla and due to the nature of the incident and other contributing factors, the Coffeyville Police Special Operations Team was activated. 

&nbsp;After an extensive search, police found Padilla hiding in the attic area of the home.&nbsp; Officers were able to take Padilla into custody without incident on requested charges with felony interference with law enforcement and arrested for the outstanding warrants. According to online jail records, he remains jailed on requested charges of Distribute or possess w/ intent to distribute, Theft of property/services from 3 businesses in 72 hours, Counterfeiting currency; Distribute or possess w/ intent to distribute, Use/possess w/intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body; Possession of opiate opium narcotic or certain stimulant and Possession of stolen property.

Padilla has a previous conviction for aggravated battery in Wyandotte County, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Police: Wanted Kansas felon found hiding in attic of home

PAWNEE COUNTY —A semi truck driver accused of drug crimes after an accident avoided a trial this week and changed his plea in Pawnee County.

&nbsp;Javier Rubio Montoya, 45 of Horizon City, Texas, pleaded Guilty to Possession of Methamphetamine and Improper Stopping or Parking on a Roadway, according to Pawnee County Attorney Doug McNett.

In exchange for the plea, the state agreed to dismiss charges of Fleeing and Eluding resulting in an accident and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

In support of the plea, McNett advised the Court that had the matter proceeded to trial the evidence would have shown that at around 3:00 a.m. on February 18, 2022, law enforcement dispatch received a 911 call from a concerned citizen that there was a semi-tractor trailer with its lights on parked in the southbound lane of US Highway 183 in northern Pawnee County. 

A Pawnee County Sheriff’s Deputy was dispatched to the location. Montoya was discovered to be the sole occupant of the semi.

The deputy requested Montoya follow the deputy to a flatter location so that their vehicles could be more easily seen by any oncoming traffic. When the officer pulled over, however, the semi continued southbound. 

The deputy activated his emergency lights and began following the semi. After several miles the semi began weaving erratically, striking guardrails on both sides of the roadway, and ultimately came to rest in the west ditch. No one was injured in the accident. 

The deputy arrested Montoya at the scene without incident. Montoya advised the deputy he had fallen asleep. Law enforcement conducted an inventory search prior to the semi being towed away, and a small quantity of methamphetamine was found in the Montoya’s belongings.

Montoya is scheduled for sentencing on May 18, 2023. He remains free on bond.

Texas semi driver enters plea in Kansas drug arrest

An investigation into an unrelated case led to the arrest of a Salina man in connection to multiple damaged vehicles and a missing mailbox.

On Wednesday, an officer was at 1007 W. North Street attempting to contact Michael Sampson, 54, of Salina, concerning a trespassing investigation, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.

While there, the officer was contacted by Scott Echer who said he believed that Sampson's white Dodge Ram flatbed pickup had been involved in damaging vehicles nearby at The Car Shoppe Service Center, 424 N. Broadway Boulevard, on Tuesday night. The officer observed that the Ram had front bumper damage and blue and gray paint transfer. 

The officer went with Echer to The Car Shoppe Service Center, where a blue 2000 Chevrolet S10 pickup and a blue 2000 Chevrolet Silverado both were damaged. Surveillance video showed the Ram drive through the parking lot at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday and drive behind the building at TCS Auto, 432 N. Broadway. When the Ram reappears on the video, it can be seen striking the S10 pickup and then the Silverado, which was dragged approximately 20 feet by the Ram, Forrester said.

Damage to the S10 and the Silverado was estimated at $3,000 each.

The officer then made contact with a representative of TCS Auto, where a gray 2013 Ford Focus that was parked behind the building had been hit. Forrester said the car had been along the same path that the Ram took when it went behind the building in the video.

Damage to the Focus also was estimated at $3,000.

The officer then was contacted by the owner of Randy's Auto, Randy Otto, who told the officer that there had been a disturbance between himself and Sampson. He told the officer that at the time of the disturbance, he believed there would be some sort of retaliation, Forrester said. Surveillance video from Randy's Auto, 1015 W. North Street, showed the Ram drive through the grass and strike a Chevrolet Tahoe. It then left through the nearby Log Cabin Motel parking lot.

Damage to the Tahoe also was estimated at $3,000.

Earlier on Tuesday, another officer responded to the 1900 block of Valley View Drive, where a mailbox was missing. The four-inch by four-inch post and attached mailbox had been pulled from the ground, Forrester said. Loss was estimated at $25.

Home security video showed the Ram pull up next to the mailbox. Someone got out of the pickup and went around to the other side of the pickup for several minutes. When the person left, the mailbox and post were missing.

Forrester said Sampson was located at his residence at 1007 W. North Street, and arrested on the following requested charges that include Four counts of felony criminal damage to property, Criminal trespass and Theft.

Man accused of damaging multiple vehicles at Kan. dealership

RENO COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating&nbsp; 21-year-old man in connection with a shooting in Hutchinson.

On Tuesday, police booked Nathan Plum into the Reno County jail on a $500,000 bond.

According to Hutchinson Police Lt. Dustin Loepp, this was a warrant arrest from a shooting that occurred on December 2, 2021.

In December 2021, police located a 38-year-old man near the alley behind 322 E 2nd Street in Hutchinson with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Police Lt. Dustin Loepp. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment and survived.

The suspect fled the state and was taken into custody on unrelated charges in Oklahoma. He had some other legal obligations before he could be brought back to Kansas, so that’s why there was an extended period of time.&nbsp; Authorities have not released charges against Plum.

Suspect in Kansas shooting moved from Oklahoma jail

SHERMAN COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating suspects for alleged crimes at a northwest Kansas community living facility.

Last month, the Goodland Police Department, along with State of Kansas Adult Protective Services interviewed several employees of ResCare, 208 West 2nd Street in Goodland, stemming from complaints received by Adult Protective Services, according to a media release from police.

After conducting the interviews, police reported on Tuesday the arrest of 4 people with recommended charges forwarded to the Sherman County Attorney’s Office.&nbsp; 

The police department did not release the names of those arrested or possible charges.

4 arrested after Kan. Adult Protective Services investigation

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating the death of&nbsp;a 48-year-old woman who died after being hit by a motorcycle at a Wichita intersection have made an arrest.

<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20071435">Chase Faimon, 21, Valley Center</a> turned himself in after police released security camera images of the suspect on a motorcycle, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo.&nbsp;

Just after 7 p.m. Monday, police responded to the intersection of 11th Street North and Broadway for an injury hit-and-run collision, according to Rebolledo.

First responders located the 48-year-old woman in the street unresponsive. EMS transported her to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

During the investigation, officers learned the victim was struck by a black dirt bike while crossing the street. After the collision, the driver of the motorcycle left the scene northbound on Broadway.

Faimon is being held on requested charges of murder in the 2nd degree, unintentional but reckless, no valid drivers license and failure to stop and an injury accident, according to online jail records.

Just before 5p.m. Feb. 17-2023 sheriff's deputies conducted a welfare check at 337 S. 4th in Everest, Kansas, according to Brown County Sheriff John Merchant.

At the residence, a deputy recognized an individual in the yard of the residence who had active warrants.&nbsp; The deputy made contact and arrested 38-year-old Brent Rezabek of Hiawatha on 4 outstanding Brown County Warrants for Felony Probation Violation, three for Failure to Appear.&nbsp; Rezabek was arrested on requested charges of Possession of Meth, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.&nbsp; 

After the arrest of Rezabek, deputies made contact at the residence and determined that probable cause existed for application of a search warrant.&nbsp; The Brown County Sheriffs Office Drug Task Force served the search warrant&nbsp; and seized needles, syringes, meth, marijuana, grinders and&nbsp; pipes as evidence.&nbsp;

Upon conclusion of the search warrant, Crystal Duvall, 37, Everest was arrested on requested charges of Possession of Meth, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Marijuana and 3 counts of Child Endangerment.

Laura Barnhart, 37, Everest was arrested on requested charges of Possession of Meth, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and 3 counts of Child Endangerment.

4 arrested, children in protective custody after Kansas drug bust

Police have made an arrest in connection to at least one of the recent daytime residential burglaries in west-central Salina, as well as other alleged thefts.

On Feb. 7, officers were sent to the Shell gas station at 1717 W. Crawford Street for the report of a person who allegedly stole $34 worth of cigarettes, Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester said this morning.

Then, on Friday, officers were sent to the 700 block of Commanche Avenue for the report of a residential burglary. In that case, the resident reported that while she was gone during the day, someone stole two debit cards from her phone case. Also missing were a Sony Playstation, an Xbox 1, a Sony Playstation VR headset, and some controllers, Forrester said. Loss, in addition to the missing debit cards, was estimated at $900.

Later on Friday, one of the woman's debit cards was used twice for just under $30 at the 24/7 Travel Store at 671 Westport Boulevard, Forrester said. Surveillance video showed a 5'11" person wearing a black hoodie with the word "Crenshaw" on the front using the card. A short time later, an officer spotted a person wearing the hoodie in the 600 block of Westport Boulevard. That person, identified as Jermaine Cooper, 25, of Salina, was detained for questioning, Forrester said.

Police believe Cooper was the person in the above thefts and burglaries. Additionally, Cooper also was recognized from surveillance video from the neighborhood near a daytime residential burglary in the 800 block of W. Republic Avenue on Wednesday, Forrester said.

Police arrested Cooper on requested charges of Two counts of burglary, Theft of a firearm, Felony theft by deception, Three counts of misdemeanor theft, Two counts of criminal use of a financial card and Criminal damage to property

According to Forrester, police continue to check for surveillance video near the locations of the other daytime burglaries to see whether Cooper might be connected to those as well.

RCPD: Wanted Kan. felon captured riding bicycle

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement were able to safely arrest a Kansas man after witnesses say he went to his former place of employment and brandished a weapon.

Just before 1p.m. Feb. 17,&nbsp; police were called to a business in the 1100 block of Horizon Drive in Lawrence, according to police spokesperson Laura McCabae.&nbsp; 

The suspect, employees say, was recently terminated and came in making threatening remarks, showed them he had a gun, and left after seeing that the woman he believed was responsible for his termination wasn’t there.

Officers with the Lawrence Police Department and dispatchers attempted to make phone contact with the suspect, but the line disconnected or went to voicemail.&nbsp; Officers learned where the man was and attempted to arrest him in the hallway of the apartment complex.&nbsp; The man physically resisted arrest and attempted to retreat back inside the apartment.

To deter further escalation, or injury to the officers or innocent occupants, one officer deployed his taser and the team was able to detain him and make a safe arrest.&nbsp; Officers were able to recover the weapon suspected in the incident.&nbsp; The man was taken to the hospital to be checked out then booked into the Douglas County Jail. Police have not released his name or place of employment.

Kan. man arrested after alleged threat at former place of employment

On February 18, officers filed a report for aggravated battery, aggravated assault, battery, and aggravated kidnapping in the 700 block of Allison Ave. in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 31-year-old man and 35-year-old man reported a 29-year-old woman threatened them with a shotgun and hit the 35-year-old man with the end of the gun, and a 27-year-old man held the two men in an apartment against their will. 

Police arrested Cecilia Gonzalez, 29, of Manhattan on requested charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery. She remains confined in the Riley County Jail with a total bond of $20,000.&nbsp;

RCPD: Woman allegedly threatened men with shotgun

SHAWNEE COUNTY —A Kansas teen injured in an accident February 15 in Shawnee County has died.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that just after 9:30p.m. on Feb. 15, a 2010 Chevy Impala driven by 40-year-old Anthony Ray Tugwell of Scranton, was northbound in the southbound lanes of U.S. 75 just north of 97th Street. 

The Chevy struck a 1995 Dodge Intrepid driven by Alyssa Marie Lee, 16, Carbondale, head-on.

EMS transported Lee and Tugwell to Stormont Vail.&nbsp; Lee died on Friday, according to the KHP. Tugwell was treated, released and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. He was initially jailed on requested charges of&nbsp;Aggravated battery; DUI causing great bodily harm/disfigurement, Driving Under Influence of Alcohol or Drugs; Misdemeanor and&nbsp;Driving Opposite Direction On Divided Highway, according to online jail records that were not updated since Lee's death.

Man arrested; Kan. teen dies from injuries in wrong-way crash

KANSAS CITY— A Kansas City man who called 911 emergency assistance for his mother pleaded guilty in federal court today after the police officers who responded to his home found illegal drugs, six firearms he illegally possessed, and large amounts of cash, according to the United State's Attorney.

Michael Thomas Cummings II, also known as “Blue,” 40, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs to one count of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute and one count of being a felon in possession of firearms.

Kansas City police officers arrived at Cummings’s residence shortly before midnight on June 7, 2021, after he had called 911 for his mother because she was unresponsive. Emergency medical personnel were in the process of attempting lifesaving measures when police officers arrived, but she was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at approximately 12:04 a.m. on June 8, 2021. Cummings, who lived with his mother, told officers she suffered from cognitive decline. Officers noted she appeared to be emaciated.

Officers saw a loaded Heckler &amp; Koch .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol sitting next to $438 in cash on a table. They also saw an SKS-style 7.62 x 54mm assault rifle with a magazine leaning against the wall of a back stairwell that led to the basement. Cummings, a felon, was arrested for illegally possessing the firearms.

Officers executed a search warrant at Cummings’s residence later the same day. They found a total of 351.37 grams of methamphetamine in Cummings’s bedroom and a Pioneer Arms 7.62 x 39mm AKM-47 style pistol in a bedroom closet. On a desk in the bedroom, officers also found a baggie that contained approximately .24 grams of fentanyl/heroin, and two baggies that contained approximately 28.1 grams of crack cocaine, as well as a baggie of marijuana in a desk drawer. Officers also found $3,512 in cash in the bedroom.

Officers found a Ruger .22-caliber pistol in another bedroom that had been converted into a weight room.

In a third bedroom, officers found a Smith and Wesson AR-15 style assault rifle in the closet and a safe that contained $175,100 in cash and a Ruger revolver that had been reported as stolen.

Officers also found $180 under the couch cushion, and sodium sulfate, which is often used by drug dealers as a cutting agent to dilute drugs, on a coffee table.

Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Cummings has a prior felony conviction for possession of a controlled substance.

Under federal statutes, Cummings is subject to a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison without parole, up to a sentence of life in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

Police found drugs, firearms after KC man called 911 for his mom

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Sedgwick County detention&nbsp;deputy accused of numerous crimes including ignoring a security breach at the Sedgwick County Jail has been found guilty of official misconduct and unlawful sexual relations with inmates.

In July, while investigating a security breach at Sedgwick County Jail&nbsp; investigators learned 22-year-old Dustin Burnett, the on-duty deputy in that area of the jail, observed inmates break a window, bring contraband into the facility and didn't stop it or inform anyone it occurred. He also did not give investigators the full story about the incident when confronted about it, according to Sheriff Jeff Easter.&nbsp;

Later, two female inmates reported inappropriate sexual contact with Burnett, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick. The alleged sexual contact occurred on July 17, 2022.

Burnett started work at the jail in January of 2022 and was terminated upon his arrest.&nbsp; He will be sentenced on March 3o, according to the district attorney's office.

Kansas jail deputy guilty of misconduct, sex with inmates

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after an arrest.

Just after 9:30 Saturday,&nbsp; a homeowner in the area of 245th and S. Prospect, approximately 36 miles south of Kansas City, reported a suspicious vehicle and a man&nbsp; running from a barn on their property, according to the Cass County Sheriff's office.

Deputies arrived in the area and determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen to the Bates County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. 

 Deputies set up a perimeter of the area and began a search with the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Office UAVs. 

The Sheriff’s Office issued an Everbridge call to residents in the area advising them of the ongoing operation. 

 About 11:00am an area resident called 9-1-1 and reported a suspicious person attempting to steal a vehicle at a neighbor’s residence. Deputies responded and attempted to stop the subject in a black Dodge truck attempting to leave a house in the area of 231st and Craycraft Road. 

 The driver fled from deputies in the vehicle before crashing and running on foot.  He was arrested moments later by state troopers and deputies. 

 Bates County Sheriff K9’s and a detective assisted with searching for property and processing the stolen vehicle for evidence. The subject, Dylan S. Lancaster was convicted in 2021 for resisting arrest and arrested again in December 2022 following a pursuit involving deputies with the Miami County Kansas and Cass County Sheriff’s Office. 

 He received a signature bond in that case and then failed to appear in court last month. 

Over a dozen law enforcement officers from 3 agencies spent hours investigating, searching and apprehending Lancaster.

 </figure>KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after an arrest.Just after 9:30 Saturday,&nbsp; a homeowner in the area of 245th and S. Prospect, approximately 36 miles south of Kansas City, reported a suspicious vehicle and a man&nbsp; running from a barn on their property, according to the Cass County Sheriff's office.Deputies arrived in the area and determined that the vehicle had been reported stolen to the Bates County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday. Deputies set up a perimeter of the area and began a search with the assistance of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and Sheriff’s Office UAVs. The Sheriff’s Office issued an Everbridge call to residents in the area advising them of the ongoing operation. About 11:00am an area resident called 9-1-1 and reported a suspicious person attempting to steal a vehicle at a neighbor’s residence. Deputies responded and attempted to stop the subject in a black Dodge truck attempting to leave a house in the area of 231st and Craycraft Road. The driver fled from deputies in the vehicle before crashing and running on foot. He was arrested moments later by state troopers and deputies. Bates County Sheriff K9’s and a detective assisted with searching for property and processing the stolen vehicle for evidence. The subject, Dylan S. Suspect captured after manhunt near Kansas City

KANSAS CITY —There is a police vehicle serving as a memorial in front of police headquarters in Kansas City in honor of Officer James Muhlbauer and K-9 Officer Champ who died in a crash on Wednesday night.

A Kansas teen has been charged in connection with the crash on Wednesday night that took the life of a Kansas City patrol officer, a pedestrian and the officer's K-9 Champ, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Jerron Allen Lightfoot, 18, Tonganoxie, faces two counts of Involuntary Manslaughter 1st Degree.

According to court records filed Thursday evening, Kansas City police officers responded to East Truman Road and Benton Blvd. on a vehicular crash.

Arriving officers saw a man standing by a white Ford Fusion, one of the crashed vehicles. The man was later identified as Jerron Allen Lightfoot, the driver and sole occupant of the white Ford vehicle.

The other vehicle in the crash was a marked police car. The police officer, James M. Muhlbauer, was in the driver's seat, unconscious. He was wearing a seatbelt. The police K-9 Champ was deceased in the back second row of the police car. The officer was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced deceased. Police found a second deceased man under the police vehicle.

Video from the area of the crash, according to court records, showed the police officer was traveling eastbound at E. Truman Road and had a green light at the intersection. The white Ford was traveling southbound on Benton Boulevard at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the traffic signal just prior to striking the police vehicle.

In addition, the police officer's dash cam showed he had a green light as he went through the intersection just prior to the crash.

Lightfoot told officers he tried to stop but his car's brakes did not work, prosecutors said. Lightfoot said he felt “a lot of vibration” when he applied the brakes.

A check of the white Ford's electronic ACM system showed the vehicle's brakes were working just prior to the crash and the vehicle was traveling at 85 mph or more just before impact.

Muhlbauer, who was married and a father, was a 20-year veteran of the force. Champ had been a K-9 with the force for a year.

In 2014, Muhlbauer arrested Brandon Howell, a suspect in the deaths of five people in a Kansas City neighborhood, said Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker. Howell, who previously was acquitted in the killings of two Kansas teens, is serving multiple life terms, with no chance of parole, in the quintuple homicide.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker issued the following statement:

"My office spoke Thursday evening with the family of our officer victim. We have not yet been able to meet with the family of our pedestrian victim prior to this filing, but we will meet soon with that victim's family. We extend our condolences to both grieving families and the police department. We are grateful for the pace of the police department's investigative work that allowed us to file these charges so quickly."

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City police officer, his K-9 partner and a pedestrian died in a crash Wednesday night.

Just after 10:15p.m., the officer identified as James Muhlbauer and his K9 officer Champ were on duty and on patrol in the area of Truman Road and Benton Boulevard when the patrol car was struck by another vehicle. The collision caused a secondary impact with a pedestrian.

The pedestrian and K-9 officer Champ was declared deceased at the scene, according to the release. EMS transported Muhlbauer to the hospital with critical injuries and he died.

The driver of the citizen vehicle has minor injuries and is in custody for further investigation

Muhlbauer is 20-year veteran of the KCPD and had been assigned to the K-9 Unit for nearly 3-years. His K9 partner  was an approximately 1-year veteran of the KCPD.&nbsp; &nbsp; K-9 Champ lived with Muhlbauer and his family. Mulhbauer was married and a father.&nbsp;

CRAWFORD COUNTY– The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Pittsburg Police Department, and the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office are conducting an investigation into the death of a man from Weir, Kansas, according to a media release from the KBI. Preliminary indications are the death is a result of homicide and two suspects are in custody.

Just after 2:30p.m. Friday, Pittsburg Police received a 911 call from Collin Pal Gebford, 43, reporting someone was shot. Police located the victim, David Duane Mays, 51, of Weir, Kan., in the roadway near 1023 N Main in Pittsburg. Mays suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

At approximately 3:00pm, the KBI Crime Scene Response Team and investigative was requested by the Crawford County Sheriff. During the course of the investigation, it was determined there was an altercation that resulted in gunfire.

Investigators identified another suspect who was questioned by police and released.

Police arrested Gebford on requested charges of attempted premeditated first degree murder and felony murder. Gebford is being held the Crawford Count Jail, according to the KBI.

Authorities also located and arrested&nbsp;Travis Blake Conness, 32, of Neosho, Mo. on requestged charges of attempted premeditated first degree murder and felony murder. Conness was arrested without incident and booked into the Crawford County Jail.

KBI: Two suspects accused in Kansas man's murder

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have two suspects in custody.

Just before 1:30a.m. Thursday, with icy winter weather in the forecast, police responded to report of a suspicious vehicle at 2129 NE Meriden in Topeka, according to Police Lt. Edward Stanley.

At the scene, officers found that two suspects later identified as 50-year-old Brian R. Stevenson and 60-year-old Francis L. Stadler both of Topeka. They were allegedly working to burglarize the property, according to Stanley.

Police arrested both men and they are being held on requested charges of felony theft and burglary, according to Stanley.

Kan. ice storm didn't prevent arrest of 2 burglary suspects

SEDGWICK COUNTY- A former Kansas teacher accused of sex crimes involving a 13-year-old student has entered a plea.

This week, Christin Covel, 32, pleaded no contest to two counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In Jan. of 2022, police in Oklahoma arrested Covel, a teacher at Edison Preparatory Schools in Tulsa, on complaints out of Sedgewick County accusing her of having inappropriate relations with a boy while working at Mead Middle School&nbsp;2601 E Skinner Street in Wichita, according to the Tulsa Police Department.&nbsp;

The incidents involving the boy happened between 2018 and 2019, according to police. Covel worked in the district from 2015 to 2020, according to USD 259.

The Tulsa school district sent a letter to parents Jan. 4 to inform them of her arrest, according to the district web site.

Police later booked Covel into the Sedgwick County Jail. She is not currently in custody.
