HUTCHINSON—&nbsp;A pretrial hearing for a Kansas woman accused of child sex crimes&nbsp; is set for Feb. 15.

On September 30, police reported they learned that 32-year-old Tyann White of Hutchinson had&nbsp;allegedly sexually assaulted two juvenile boys, according to a media release. Police arrested her November 7.. &nbsp;

Later, two more boys were&nbsp;identified as additional victims.&nbsp;

White remains in custody on suspicion of four counts of rape, three counts of aggravated sodomy, three counts of aggravated indecent liberties and indecent solicitation of a child.&nbsp;

JACKSON COUNTY— A Kansas City man charged in the October double-murder of Chantell Gipson and Austin Scott is now in custody, according to a statement from Kansas City Police.

Glenn A. Pulluaim II, 28, faces two Murder 1st Degree charges and two Armed Criminal Action charges, according to Jackson County. Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

According to court records, on Oct. 17, Kansas City police&nbsp; were dispatched to the 8700 block of Chestnut Circle to check on the welfare of an individual. 

Inside an apartment, police officers found the body of Chantell Gipson. She had been shot. In another bedroom they found the second victim, Austin Scott, Gipson's cousin. 

Witnesses helped identify Pulluaiam. His DNA profile was founnd&nbsp; on spent shells found at the crime scene.

Pulluaim fled the scene im the victim's vehicle. Police recovered the vehicle and have exhausted all leads in an attempted to find him until Thursday.&nbsp; Police have released no additional details on the arrest.

He carried Brazil to soccer’s heights and became a global ambassador for his sport in a journey that began on the streets of Sao Paulo state, where he would kick a sock stuffed with newspapers or rags.

In the conversation about soccer’s greatest players, only the late Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are mentioned alongside Pelé.

Different sources, counting different sets of games, list Pelé’s goal totals anywhere between 650 (league matches) and 1,281 (all senior matches, some against low-level competition.)

Pelé spent his 80th birthday isolated with a few family members at a beach home.

Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, in the small city of Tres Coracoes in the interior of Minas Gerais state on Oct. 23, 1940, Pelé grew up shining shoes to buy his modest soccer gear.

Pelé’s talent drew attention when he was 11, and a local professional player brought him to Santos’ youth squads. It didn’t take long for him to make it to the senior squad.

Despite his youth and 5-foot-8 frame, he scored against grown men with the same ease he displayed against friends back home. He debuted with the Brazilian club at 16 in 1956, and the club quickly gained worldwide recognition.

In a game against England, he struck a header for a certain score, but the great goalkeeper Gordon Banks flipped the ball over the bar in an astonishing move. Pelé likened the save — one of the best in World Cup history — to a “salmon climbing up a waterfall.” Later, he scored the opening goal in the final against Italy, his last World Cup match.

In all, Pelé played 114 matches with Brazil, scoring a record 95 goals, including 77 in official matches.

His run with Santos stretched over three decades until he went into semi-retirement after the 1972 season. Wealthy European clubs tried to sign him, but the Brazilian government intervened to keep him from being sold, declaring him a national treasure.

On the field, Pelé’s energy, vision and imagination drove a gifted Brazilian national team with a fast, fluid style of play that exemplified “O Jogo Bonito” -- Portuguese for “The Beautiful Game.” His 1977 autobiography, “My Life and the Beautiful Game,” made the phrase part of soccer’s lexicon.

Pelé would endure difficult times in his personal life, especially when his son Edinho was arrested on drug-related charges. Soccer legend Pelé, winner of 3 World Cups, has died

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a shooting that fatally injured a man and woman and critically injured two other men all from Wichita have arrested&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=90813">39-year-old Kenneth Jackson</a> of Wichita.

Just before 10p.m. Friday, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 900 block of South Mission in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo

At the scene, police located two victims,&nbsp;a 22-year-0ld man and a 42-year-old man, with multiple gunshot wounds. EMS transported them to an area hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The victims underwent surgery and on Saturday afternoon, police reported they were reported in stable condition.

During the initial contact, officers learned that two additional victims were inside an apartment near where the two men had been shot. Officers entered the apartment and located a man and woman later identified as&nbsp;39-year-old Jose Alvarez and 22-year-old Neosha Allen unconscious and not breathing. They were pronounced deceased on the scene.

Due to the lack of cooperation from some of the victims and witnesses, investigators were not initially able to fully determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting.&nbsp;

NEOSHO COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a woman's death in Neosho County have made an arrest.

On Dec. 6, deputies from the Neosho County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a welfare check at 6845 160th&nbsp;Road in Chanute, according to a media release from the KBI.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, in North Carolina contacted Kansas officials that prompted concern for a woman who lived at the residence.

Deputies searched the property and located the deceased body of Elaina M. Asprea, 47, of Chanute. She was found next to a field, near the residence. Asprea was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators developed a person of interest in the case as Asprea’s boyfriend 37-year-old Joseph R. Deluca who was arrested in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Dec. 5, on a Robeson County warrant for charges unrelated to this case. .

On Dec. 28, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Neosho County Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of Deluca on requested charges of second-degree murder in the death of Asprea.

The arrest warrant was served at the Cumberland County Detention Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina where Deluca is being held on unrelated charges.

On Tuesday, Dec. 6, at approximately 5 p.m., deputies from the Neosho County Sheriff’s Office were conducting a welfare check at 6845 160th&nbsp;Road in Chanute, according to a media release from the KBI.

A person of interest has been developed in this case. Asprea’s boyfriend, Joseph R. Deluca, 37, was arrested in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Dec. 5, on a Robeson County warrant for charges unrelated to this case. He is currently in police custody at the Cumberland County Detention Center.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Dec. 9.

Man jailed in No. Carolina accused of Kan. girlfriend's murder

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a shooting that critically injured a Kansas man and teen girl have made an arrest.

Just before 6a.m. on police were dispatched to a shooting in the 1100 block of North Harding in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Rebolledo. Officers located a 23-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl with multiple gunshot wounds.

The victims were transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Following an investigation, police arrested 24-year-old Tmori Wright of Wichita requested charges of attempted murder.

The two victims underwent surgery and were reported in critical condition.&nbsp;The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office.&nbsp;

Suspect jailed for shooting that critically injured Kan. girl, man

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an incident while in custody in Riley County.

On Tuesday, the Riley County Police Department reported 36-year-old Daniel Weaver of Larned was arrested on&nbsp; requested charges of battery on law enforcement officers after he spit on three separate Corrections Officers while he was confined in the Riley County Jail.

On Dec. 20, police arrested Weaver for alleged battery on a law enforcement officer; physical contact with county or city officer on duty; criminal threat against law enforcement officer; cause terror evacuation or disruption; Battery on law enforcement; city/county officer/employee on duty; Bond $13,000

Weaver has previous convictions for battery on a county employee, battery on a state corrections officer, indecent solicitation of child; commit or submit to unlawful sexual act and criminal threat.

Kansas man accused of forgery and theft

An opinion piece printed in the Wichita Eagle on Dec. 24&nbsp;told the tale of a man with inoperable terminal cancer being the victim of three cold-hearted Hays Police Department officers&nbsp;raiding his hospital room to confiscate the cannabis he was using to find some relief from his symptoms.

That opinion piece was later printed as news in outlets across the U.S. and beyond.

But while countless news outlets painted a picture of Hays officers citing a sick man for criminal activity and forcing him to go before the Hays Municipal Court for what would not be a crime in most of the country, they did so without any attempt to secure accurate information.

Hays Police Department Chief Don Scheibler said while officers did cite an individual being treated at HaysMed on suspicion of drug possession on Dec. 16, a request to pull the ticket was made the same day. The opinion piece was not published until eight days later on Dec 24.

He said he likely saw the report during an end-of-shift summary but became aware of the details only after the opinion piece was published.

“I wasn't really aware of the incident until I saw an opinion [piece] out of a Wichita paper talking about the Hays Police Department raiding a hospital room and an individual with cancer being arrested,” Scheibler said.

After looking into the case, he described the response captured on the officers' audio recorders.

“The hospital staff had reported they discovered a patient who was vaping with an electronic device with a controlled substance in the vape machine, and they were concerned,” Scheibler said.

He said the staff was concerned about the fire risk caused by using a vaping device and the effects of its use on the staff, so they called the police department.

Two–not three as reported–HPD officers responded to the call, Scheibler said.

“The staff already had the items,” Scheibler said. “So, they collected the items from the staff.”

“They just can't take those illegal drugs and throw them in a drawer and keep them,” he said.

From there he said the officers spoke with the individual.

“We were in the room just a little over eight minutes,” Scheibler said. “I've listened to the audio recording. The officers were polite, courteous and showed the individual empathy. He expressed some frustration about the whole incident, and they were sympathetic to that.”

But they did write him a ticket for the drug violations in accordance with Hays Municipal Code.

The misdemeanor offense used in the citation would result in a fine if he was convicted in Hays Municipal Court.

However, that process was stopped shortly after the ticket was issued and long before any story had been written.

“They immediately drove back to the office, spoke to the supervisor and that day sent an email to the prosecutor recommending they dismiss the ticket,” Scheibler said. “Based on that recommendation, we pulled that ticket.”

He said the officer, in an effort to enforce the laws as written, initially made a judgment call to follow procedure to the letter, a decision that, with guidance from a more seasoned, officer, was adjusted.

“The officers weren't perfect that day,” Scheibler said. “They tried to be, and at the end of the day, they got where they needed to be. But I can't stress enough the problem is not what they did. It's how we're supposed to enforce the law in this situation.”

He said it is also important to note HaysMed staff were also operating under their policy and state law.

“I think that the hospital did everything required to them by law,” Scheibler said. “The officer did everything in accordance with Kansas state law. They didn't violate any department policy or procedure.”

“We put law enforcement officers in a very difficult position," he said. "We want to say this is a law but don't enforce it. That's gonna be a challenge for us.”

And while the goal of the original opinion piece was likely to spur a conversation about medical cannabis use in Kansas, even as regional, national and international news agencies published the story, no one spoke with a member of the police department, leading to the inaccuracies being spread.

“Accuracy wasn't a priority,” Scheibler said. “They didn't do any investigation into it. They just tried to create discussion.”

And that lack of accuracy has led to threats against HaysMed staff and HPD officers.

“I recognize an opinion editor that's his job is to create discussion in this community,” he said. “When we fail to investigate things and actually get important facts, that's when it gets tricky. The hospital did exactly what it needed to do in accordance with Kansas law. The police officers were also acting within the law and city policy and procedure. They didn't do anything wrong.”

He acknowledged a call from the opinion editor had been logged, but as it referenced only a misdemeanor crime and with the timing right before the holiday, the call had not yet been returned.

But while the inaccuracies in the media are problematic, Scheibler said the expectation that police officers are expected to equally enforce the law while at the same time being expected to make judgment calls that not everyone may agree with is also a concern.

“We continue to try and expect police officers to be perfect in an imperfect world,” he said. “We're ultimately disappointed. At the end of the day, those kids went out there and did the best they could, based on the laws of the state of Kansas and the city of Hays and tried to use their best judgment and show compassion for this individual.”

“We encourage them to use good judgment,” he said. “We've hired them, and we empower them to use good officer discretion. And we want them to do that. … They did everything in accordance with the law, that's the problem. But at the end of the day, they got where we want them to be.”

“They want to enforce the law equally and hold everybody to the same standard, which I think is important,” Scheibler said. “And I admire them for that.”

“I support what they did," he said. "I support their decisions trying to follow the law of&nbsp; Kansas and Hays, but also show some compassion and empathy, and they did that. They didn't feel comfortable writing that ticket, [they] didn't think it was necessary. So, they made that recommendation [to pull the ticket.]

While standing by the actions of the officers, he said he was sorry the patient was caught up in the situation.

“It's important that we have these discussions,” Scheibler said. “It's important that we have clear laws for law enforcement to enforce. And we need to do what we think is best for all of Kansas. Again, the only thing I'm sorry about that day was that man's got to deal with one of the most private things in his life. And that's no longer possible now. For that, I'm sorry.”

Inaccurate report of dismissed ticket issued to cancer patient leads to threats

LANE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating four suspects on drug allegations following a traffic stop and arrest.

Just before 9:30 p.m. Monday, a Lane County sheriff's sergeant observed a vehicle driving through the city of Dighton with its high beams activated. The vehicle failed to dim its lights as it passed the sergeant and a traffic stop was initiated.

During the stop, the sergeant noticed the smell of marijuana coming from inside the truck. There was also a loaded rifle tucked in between the seats, within reach of all four occupants. He also recognized two of the occupants from a previous law enforcement contact that resulted in criminal charges earlier in the year. All four occupants were ordered to exit the truck.

Several of the occupants became argumentative and refused to comply with orders. A Use of Force incident occurred when the sergeant attempted to detain a passenger, identified as 39-year-old Zachariah Dittrick, in handcuffs. 

The sergeant and Dittrick sustained minor injuries during the incident. With additional deputies arriving to assist, the other three individuals were detained without further incident.

Further investigation inside the vehicle revealed several more firearms, various amounts of methamphetamine in various forms, marijuana, and identity documents belonging to two people unknown to any of the four occupants.

Dittrick was arrested and taken to the Scott County Jail on requested charges of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, battery on a law enforcement officer, and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Shawn Lee Colton, 37, was arrested and transported to the Scott County Jail on requested charges of unlawful possession and distribution of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal use of Weapons.

Clayton Lawrence Hines, 41, was arrested on requested charges of criminal deprivation of property, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

 Jesse James Biggs, 40, was released on scene with charges being forwarded to the Lane County Attorney's Office for possession of marijuana.

Dittrick has previous convictions that include battery against a judge who was performing his duties, arson and for drugs, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Just after 4 a.m. December 10, police responded to a shooting the area of 107th and Newton. When they arrived they were directed toward a residence where they found a Wallace who had been shot and was unresponsive. When EMS arrived on the scene they pronounced him dead.

Police have not released suspect details or reported an arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call the KCPD Homicide Unit at 234-5043. If you wish to remain anonymous you can call the TIPS hotline at 474-TIPS, with up to a $25,000 reward for an arrest in this case.

Police ID man who died in shooting at Kansas City home

KANSAS CITY — Two Mexican nationals have been convicted in federal court of kidnapping and murder.

Jonathan M. Bravo-Lopez (also known as “Jonathan Vravo,” and “Shadow”), 27, and Juan D. Osorio (also known as “Spexx”), 28, both of whom are citizens of Mexico residing in Kansas City were found guilty this month, of conspiracy to commit kidnapping and kidnapping resulting in death. Osorio was also found guilty of being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm, according to the United State's Attorney

Bravo-Lopez was also found guilty of illegally reentering the United States after having been deported in 2016.

Evidence introduced during the trial indicated that Bravo-Lopez and Osorio conspired to kidnap Cristian Escutia in an attempt to rob him of money. They transported Escutia across state lines from Missouri to Kansas before fatally shooting him on April 3, 2017.

Bravo-Lopez and Osorio arranged to purchase $300 of marijuana from Escutia as a ruse to lure him into their kidnapping plan. On April 3, 2017, they met Escutia outside his residence, shot him in the arm, and forced him into their vehicle, a Chrysler Pacifica, at gunpoint. The kidnapping was captured by the video surveillance system outside a nearby residence. When they drove to the 200 block of Donovan Road in Kansas City, Kan., they forced Escutia out of the vehicle. Escutia was shot three times in the head and left to die on the side of the road.

Osorio, who is in the United States unlawfully, was in possession of an Action Arms Uzi .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol when he was arrested on April 7, 2017.

Following the presentation of evidence, the jury in the U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo., deliberated for about three hours before returning guilty verdicts to U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark, ending a trial that began Dec. 5, 2022.

Under federal statutes, Bravo-Lopez and Osorio each are subject to a mandatory sentence of life in federal prison without parole. The sentencing of the defendants will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. Sentencing hearings will be scheduled after the completion of presentence investigations by the United States Probation Office.

Jury: Man illegally in the U.S. found guilty of murder in Kansas 

JACKSON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for multiple allegations after a traffic stop.

Just after 5p.m. Friday, a sheriff's deputy&nbsp;conducted a traffic stop on a 2006 Ford Focus for a traffic infraction  near 150th and U.S. 75 Highway, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.&nbsp;

During a search of the vehicle, the deputy found illegal contraband. The rear seat passenger, Michael Shawn Herrick, 47, of Manhattan, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, identity theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and interference with law enforcement. 

Herrick was also wanted on two outstanding Geary County warrants. He previous convictions that include forgery and for drug possession and distribution, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

The rear seat passenger, Michael Shawn Herrick, 47, of Manhattan, was arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine, identity theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and interference with law enforcement. Herrick was also wanted on two outstanding Geary County warrants. He previous convictions that include forgery and for drug possession and distribution, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

Kan. corrections officer remains jailed for alleged sex with inmate 

CASS COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged animal cruelty.&nbsp;

Just after 3p.m. Thursday, deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant on Roush Road in rural Pleasant Hill, according to a media release. A Cass County Judge had issued a search warrant for the property. 

 Sheriff Jeff Weber activated the Disaster Emergency Response Team, as well as the Criminal Apprehension Units to assist in the operation in temperatures near zero.

With assistance from the Harrisonville and Raymore Animal Control Officers, 30 dogs were collected.&nbsp; All animals were seen by veterinarians, who were on scene during the operation, prior to being transported to a local shelter for safekeeping.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The sheriff's office released no additional details and have not reported an arrest.

On Wednesday, officials with the Douglas County Nebraska Sheriff's office contacted the Shawnee County Kansas Sheriff's Office for assistance in the case, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

Just before 3p.m. Wednesday, law enforcement officers with the Shawnee County Criminal Investigations Division began an investigation in the 2200 block of SW 57th Street.

 A search warrant was executed after a human body was discovered.&nbsp;

On December 6, authorities in Caye Caulker, an island off the coast of Belize in the Caribbean, arrested 47-year-old Aldrick Scott of Topeka, according to the Douglas County Nebraska sheriff's office in connection with Allen's disappearance.

Sheriff confirms body of missing woman found in Kansas

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A Kansas man involved in a fatal Thanksgiving Day crash in 2021 has entered a plea in the case.

On Monday, Garrett Myers of Andover&nbsp;pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence and aggravated battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just after 8p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday Nov. 25, 2021, police responded to report of an accident at 13th and Hillside in Wichita, according to Officer Trevor Macy.

Investigators determined a truck driven by Myers struck an SUV driven by 65-year-old Leroy Grim, of Wichita, who was stopped westbound at the intersection. Grim was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported a 67-year-old woman in the SUV to an area hospital. Police arrested Myers.&nbsp; 

Sentencing is scheduled for February 2, 2023, according to the district attorney's office.

Just before 3a.m. Dec. 20,&nbsp;a sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop near NW Gordon Street and NW Jackson Street on a gray 2013 Audi A4 passenger car for a traffic violation, according to Deputy Abigail Christian During the investigation, a firearm and illegal narcotics were located.

The driver, Jonathan T. Sibert, 21, of Topeka, was arrested on scene, booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, transporting an open container, vehicle registration violations and failing to properly signal turn.

Kansas felon caught transporting drugs, firearm

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas judge on Wednesday declined to order a new trial for two men who claimed a disgraced police detective helped convict them for a 1997 murder they did not commit.

Brian Betts, 46, and Celester McKinney, 52, alleged that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/c465a1483c9295eb465847fb8c3463eb">former Kansas City, Kansas, detective Roger Golubski</a>&nbsp;and another detective coerced their uncle into identifying them as the shooters in the death of 17-year-old Gregory Miller.

Judge Gunnar Sundby ruled the men did not prove their case, despite a “cloud of doubt” over Golubski, The Kansas City Star&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/local/crime/article270212742.html#storylink=cpy">reported.</a>

Golubski was indicted in September on federal charges that accuse him of sexually assaulting and kidnapping a woman and a teenager from 1998 to 2002. He also faces a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arrests-kansas-city-indictments-337f9df63faf6c5ff8d3d50623b902c2">separate federal indictment</a>&nbsp;alleging he was part of a sex trafficking ring involving girls between 1996 and 1998.

The FBI&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/police-kansas-city-kansas-4d005737c9046b7d65363a6e82f93493">has been investigating</a>&nbsp;allegations that Golubski, who is white, sexually assaulted Black women for decades in Kansas City, Kansas, and exchanged drugs for information during criminal investigations.

Golubski, who is under house arrest, has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

During a hearing in October, Carter Betts said Golubski and another detective, identified as W.K. Smith, said Betts and his family would suffer if he didn't testify against his nephews. Betts originally didn’t remember Golubski’s name, but identified him in a photo, noting the detective's distinctive mustache.

Betts and McKinney, who are Black, both testified that they were at their homes sleeping when Miller was killed and they had no motive to kill the teenager.

Golubski testified at the hearing that he never pressured witnesses into false testimony and did not help investigate Miller’s murder. He also said he had no connection to Miller’s family, although he had been married to Miller’s aunt.

Sundby, who is retired but heard the case as a senior judge, said he wasn't convinced by Betts' testimony. He noted Betts testified several times about his interactions with Kansas City, Kansas, police, including times when he did not allege coercion or claimed it was Smith who pressured him.

“It would be easy, under this new cloud of doubt cast about Mr. Golubski, to use that as leverage to secure relief from conviction,” Sundby said. “I do not find his testimony to be credible.”

Brian Betts' mother, Ellen Betts, said the family plans to appeal Sundby's decision.
