SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a violent home invasion robbery and have made an arrest.

Just after 4p.m. July 5, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a home invasion in the 6100 block of SW 40th Terrace, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

During the incident, a victim was battered and restrained and items were stolen. The investigation led deputies to a residence in the 3600 block of SE 6th Street in Topeka.

After a search warrant was granted, investigators found several of the stolen items were located inside the residence. Deputies arrested 26-year-old Charles T. Higgins and 23-year-old&nbsp; Kayley C. McDaniel both of Topeka.

The are being held on requested charges of&nbsp;of aggravated kidnapping,, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, theft, criminal damage to property, and conspiracy.

Suspects accused of violent Kan. home-invasion robbery

JEFFERSON COUNTY, KY. — The father of four family members from Nickerson, Kansas hit by an alleged impaired driver in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this week has died.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office says Trey Jones, teacher and track coach at Nickerson USD 309, succumbed to his injuries Thursday night.

Jones, his wife Amy, and daughter Ava, along with the family’s youngest child were all hit by a motorist who drove up onto the sidewalk in the downtown area of Louisville Tuesday evening.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ava, who just signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Iowa, was improving, according to&nbsp;Nickerson USD 309 Superintendent Curtis Nightingale.&nbsp; Ava's team, Wheat State Elite, is playing in the&nbsp;<a href="https://run4theroses.com/">Run 4 The Roses</a>&nbsp;club basketball tournament in Louisville.

A candlelight vigil will be held at the Nickerson High School football stadium on Sunday at 9 p.m. A&nbsp;fund has been set up at Peoples Bank and Trust to help with the family’s expenses. Donations can be made at the bank to the Jones Family Fund.

Police arrested the suspect, 33-year-old Michael Hurley of Lexington, Indiana. Hurley admitted he had just taken Oxycodone before the accident and failed a field test for narcotics at the scene. According to the Jefferson County Commonwealth Attorney's Office, Hurley is now facing an amended charge of murder.

Father of Kansas family struck by car in Kentucky dies

KIOWA COUNTY–The Kansas Bureau of Investigation arrested Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Davis in Greensburg, Kansas on Friday, according to a media release from the agency.

On August 30, the Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office requested the KBI investigate allegations of domestic violence and child abuse. Davis is a part-time deputy for the Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office and full-time deputy for the Ford County Sheriff’s Office.

Just before 2p.m. Friday., KBI agents arrested Davis of Grand Island, Nebraska. He voluntarily surrendered himself at the Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested on requested charges of aggravated endangering a child and two counts of domestic battery. Davis is being held in Kiowa County Jail, according to the KBI.

KBI: Sheriff's deputy accused of domestic violence, child abuse

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Patients and staff were evacuated Friday from a western Missouri hospital following a report of an armed man there, but authorities said no shots were fired and no one was injured.

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the report at the Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg around 9 a.m., Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Andrew Bell said. Ambulances were at the ready. But just a couple of hours later, Bell gave the all-clear.

“It was never an active shooter,” he said. “We don’t have any reason to believe there is an active threat.”

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said officers later arrested and jailed a man possibly connected to events at the hospital, though it did not explain how he was involved and said he was not even near the facility.

The state patrol first tweeted that it was investigating a report of an armed man at the medical center at 9:03 a.m. The facility tweeted at 9:18 a.m. that the active shooter report came from the medical center’s main building. The medical center has about 50 beds.

“Police on site, and staff and patients being evacuated now,” the hospital tweeted. “This is not a drill.”

The nation has been on edge because of gun violence. Patrol: No shots, no injuries at evacuated KC-area hospital

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities investigating a 4th of July weekend double murder in rural Kansas are asking the public’s assistance in locating&nbsp; 42-year-old Hieu Trong Luong. He is also known as Sunny, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Just after 5 a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies were sent to a shooting call in the 4400 block of south Rock Road in rural Sedgwick County, according to Blick.&nbsp;

At the scene, first responders found 42-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20076411">David Baeza</a>&nbsp;of Wichita on the side of the road suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Colonel Brian White with the sheriff's department. EMS transported Baeza to an area hospital for treatment and later arrested him.

During an additional search of the rural property, deputies found a man and woman deceased in the backyard of a residence the 4300 block of South Rock Road. They died from apparent gunshot wounds. The woman was later identified as 43-year-old Saren Negrete-Perez of California.&nbsp; Authorities have not released the name of the man who died.

While processing the scene, investigators found 43-year-old&nbsp;<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=18714449">Joseph Ponse Jr. </a>&nbsp;of Wichita. Deputies booked him into the Sedgwick County jail.

Investigators still have individuals they want to interview in connection with the case, according to White. "This was not a random act and drug activity is believed involved."&nbsp; The victims did not live at the location where they were killed.&nbsp;

Ponse and Baeza remain jailed each on a bond of $500,000.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sheriff asks for help to locate suspect in Kansas double murder

HERINGTON—Law enforcement authorities investigating a drive-by shooting in Herington have made an arrest.

On Wednesday,&nbsp; police were dispatched to a reported shooting at the intersection of S. B Street and Day Street in Herington, according to a media release.

 The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Travis Richardson of Abilene, confronted another subject that was walking at the intersection following a confrontation at a nearby residence. 

Richardson produced a semi-automatic pistol and fired fourteen times at the victim before fleeing the scene. According to online jail records, Richardson is being held on requested charges that include&nbsp;Criminal damage to property; Without consent value $1000 to $25,000,&nbsp;Criminal discharge of firearm; Public road/public right of way/railroad,&nbsp;Criminal discharge of firearm; Recklessly at occupied dwelling, attempted&nbsp;Murder in the 2nd degree; Intentional.

No one was hurt as a result of the shooting, although some personal property was damaged by the rounds fired in the area.&nbsp;

Police have not released details on the arrest.

Police arrest suspect in Herington drive-by shooting

NARA, Japan (AP) — Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a divisive arch-conservative and one of his nation's most powerful and influential figures, has died after being shot during a campaign speech Friday in western Japan, hospital officials said.

Abe, 67, was shot from behind minutes after he started his speech in Nara. He was airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment but was not breathing and his heart had stopped. He was later pronounced dead despite emergency treatment that included massive blood transfusions, hospital officials said.

Police arrested the suspected gunman at the scene of an attack that shocked many in Japan, which is one of the world’s safest nations and has some of the strictest gun control laws anywhere.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his Cabinet ministers hastily returned to Tokyo from campaign events around the country after the shooting, which he called “dastardly and barbaric."

Nara Medical University emergency department chief Hidetada Fukushima said Abe suffered major damage to his heart in addition to two neck wounds that damaged an artery, causing extensive bleeding. He was in a state of cardio and pulmonary arrest when he arrived at the hospital and never regained his vital signs, Fukushima said.

Abe was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/japan-shinzo-abe-timeline-3bff720a48b60b4c8907b8e71bcf41e8">Japan’s longest-serving leader</a>&nbsp;before stepping down in 2020.

Public television NHK aired a dramatic video of Abe giving a speech outside a train station in the western city of Nara. He is standing, dressed in a navy blue suit, raising his fist, when two gunshots are heard. The video then shows Abe collapsed on the street, with security guards running toward him. He holds his chest, his shirt smeared with blood.

In the next moment, security guards leap on top of a man in gray shirt who lies face down on the pavement. A double-barreled device that appeared to be a handmade gun is seen on the ground.

Nara prefectural police confirmed the arrest of Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, on suspicion of attempted murder. NHK reported that the suspect served in the Maritime Self-Defense Force for three years in the 2000s.

Other videos from the scene showed campaign officials surrounding Abe. The former leader was still highly influential in the governing Liberal Democratic Party and headed its largest faction, Seiwakai.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/technology-elections-japan-tokyo-parliamentary-d58bd38e1ad061d0a4e9447cca220797">Elections for Japan's upper house</a>, the less powerful chamber of its parliament, are Sunday.

“I use the harshest words to condemn (the act),” Kishida said as he struggled to control his emotions. He said the government planned to review the security situation, but added that Abe had the highest protection.

Opposition leaders condemned the attack as a challenge to Japan’s democracy. In Tokyo, people stopped on the street to grab extra editions of newspapers or watch TV coverage of the shooting.

When he resigned as prime minister, Abe said he had a recurrence of the ulcerative colitis he'd had since he was a teenager.

He told reporters at the time that it was “gut wrenching” to leave many of his goals unfinished. He spoke of his failure to resolve the issue of Japanese abducted years ago by North Korea, a territorial dispute with Russia and a revision of Japan’s war-renouncing constitution.

That last goal was a big reason he was such a divisive figure.

His ultra-nationalism riled the Koreas and China, and his push to create what he saw as a more normal defense posture angered many Japanese. Abe failed to achieve his cherished goal of formally rewriting the U.S.-drafted pacifist constitution because of poor public support.

Loyalists said that his legacy was a stronger U.S.-Japan relationship that was meant to bolster Japan’s defense capability. But Abe made enemies by forcing his defense goals and other contentious issues through parliament, despite strong public opposition.

Abe was a political blue blood who was groomed to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, former Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi. His political rhetoric often focused on making Japan a “normal” and “beautiful” nation with a stronger military and bigger role in international affairs.

Many&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/shinzo-abe-shooting-world-leaders-react-e163d6212ab8a76ff88ac66a7287172c">foreign officials</a>&nbsp;expressed shock over the shooting.

Abe said he was proud of working while leader for a stronger Japan-U.S. security alliance and shepherding the first visit by a serving U.S. president to the atom-bombed city of Hiroshima. He also helped Tokyo gain the right to host the 2020 Olympics by pledging that a disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant was “under control” when it was not.

Abe became Japan’s youngest prime minister in 2006, at age 52, but his overly nationalistic first stint abruptly ended a year later, also because of his health.

The end of Abe’s scandal-laden first stint as prime minister was the beginning of six years of annual leadership change, remembered as an era of “revolving door” politics that lacked stability and long-term policies.

When he returned to office in 2012, Abe vowed to revitalize the nation and get its economy out of its deflationary doldrums with his “Abenomics” formula, which combines fiscal stimulus, monetary easing and structural reforms.

He won six national elections and built a rock-solid grip on power, bolstering Japan’s defense role and capability and its security alliance with the U.S. He also stepped up patriotic education at schools and raised Japan’s international profile.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man for the alleged attempted murder of his mother.

Just after 6:30p.m. Wednesday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communication Center received information that a 63-year-old woman had arrived at a local hospital with serious injuries to her face, head, and hands, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 Investigators learned that the 63-year-old woman was attacked by her&nbsp; son identified as 41-year-old Preston Price&nbsp; in her own home in the 1100 block of NE 35th Street in Topeka.

The 63-year-old female was able to escape the scene and drive herself to a local hospital. She is currently being treated in a Kansas City hospital for extensive injuries suffered during the attack.

Deputies arrested Preston L. Price of Topeka and booked him on a requested charge of attempted murder in the 1st degree, according to Christian.

On Wednesday, July 6th, Saint George Police Department served two search warrants simultaneously at 107 N Lincoln Street and 215 Kelly Lane, both in Saint George, Kansas.

Saint George Police Department has been investigating an ongoing distribution of marijuana, prescription pills and possible fentanyl to teenagers in the Pottawatomie County area.

The search warrants allege adults are using teenagers to distribute the illegal drugs with small children present in both homes.

The following individuals were arrested as part of the two search warrants.&nbsp; DIXIE ROSE MARTIN, 44,&nbsp; was arrested at 107 N. Lincoln and transported to Pottawatomie County Jail with the following requested charges: Distribute or possess with intent to distribute marijuana within 1000 feet of school; Aggravated Endangering of a Child; Contributing to a child's misconduct; Possession of Marijuana; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; Possession of Opiates; Possession of Depressants; No Kansas Drug Tax Stamp

4 kids removed from  Kan. home; 5 arrested on drug charges

MOSCOW (AP) — Jailed American basketball star Brittney Griner on Thursday pleaded guilty to drug possession and smuggling during her trial in Moscow but said she had no intention of committing a crime, Russian news agencies reported.

The reports quoted Griner as saying through an interpreter at the court hearing that she had acted unintentionally because she was packing in haste.

Griner was detained in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after vape canisters with cannabis oil allegedly were found in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.

The trial of the Phoenix Mercury star and two-time Olympic gold medalist began last week amid a growing chorus of calls for Washington to do more to secure her freedom nearly five months after her arrest.

Before Thursday’s hearing, Russian police escorted Griner, handcuffed and clad in a bright red T-shirt and sports trousers, into the courtroom past a crowd of journalists.

The athlete was detained in February at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport after vape canisters with cannabis oil allegedly were found in her luggage. She faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.

Elizabeth Rood, deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, told reporters after the hearing that she spoke to Griner in the courtroom and shared a letter from President Joe Biden that she read.

“She’s eating well, she’s able to read books and under the circumstances she’s doing well,” Rood said of Griner.

“I would like again to emphasize the commitment of the U.S. government at the very highest level to bring home safely Ms. Griner and all U.S. citizens wrongfully detained as well as the commitment of the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to care for and protect the interests of all U.S. citizens detained or imprisoned in Russia,” Rood said.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov bristled at the U.S. description of Briner as “wrongfully detained” and warned that “attempts by the American side to make noise in public ... don’t help the practical settlement of issues.”

The White House said Biden called Griner’s wife on Wednesday to assure her that he’s doing all he can to obtain the athlete’s release, as soon as possible. They spoke after Biden read a letter from Griner in which she said she feared she’d never return home.

Washington hasn’t made public its strategy in the case and the United States may have little leverage with Moscow because of strong animosity due to Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. The State Department has designated Griner as wrongfully detained, moving her case under the supervision of its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, effectively the government’s chief hostage negotiator.

Asked about the possibility of Griner being swapped for a Russian jailed in the U.S., Ryabkov, the senior Russian diplomat, noted that until her trial is over “there are no formal or procedural reasons to talk about any further steps.”

He warned that U.S. criticism, including a description of Griner as wrongfully detained and dismissive comments about the Russian judicial system, “makes it difficult to engage in detailed discussion of any possible exchanges.”

“The persistence with which the U.S. administration ... describes those who were handed prison sentences for serious criminal articles and those who are awaiting the end of investigation and court verdicts as ‘wrongfully detained’ reflects Washington’s refusal to have a sober view of the outside world,” Ryabkov snapped.

Griner's trial was adjourned after its start last week because two scheduled witnesses did not appear. Such delays are routine in Russian courts and her detention has been authorized through Dec. 20, suggesting the proceedings could last months.

Although Griner's supporters initially kept a low profile, calls for the United States to take action spiked after the trial's first day.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, one of America's most prominent Black activists, this week called for Biden to arrange a prayer meeting with Griner, saying, "Four months is too long for this to have gone on, and I hope the President acts on her pleas to come home.”

An organization called Win With Black Women sent Biden a letter saying Secretary of State Antony Blinken “has called Cherelle Griner, Brittney’s wife, assuring her and stating publicly that Brittney’s safe return was a matter of personal priority; however, we are concerned that the rhetoric does not appear to align with the actions taken to date. We urge you to make a deal to get Brittney back home swiftly.”

Russian news media have repeatedly speculated that Griner could be swapped for Russian arms trader Viktor Bout, nicknamed “the Merchant of Death,” who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. on conviction of conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens and providing aid to a terrorist organization.

Russia has agitated for Bout’s release for years. But the wide discrepancy between Griner’s alleged offense and Bout’s global dealings in deadly weapons could make such a swap unpalatable to Washington.

Others have suggested that she could be traded along with Paul Whelan, a former Marine and security director serving a 16-year sentence in Russia on an espionage conviction that the U.S. has repeatedly described as a setup.

Russia has shown no signs of backing off.

“This is a serious offense, confirmed by indisputable evidence ... Attempts to present the case as if the American was detained illegally do not hold up," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexei Zaitsev said Wednesday.

“The law has been violated, and arguments about the innocent nature of Griner’s addiction, which, by the way, is punishable in some U.S. states, are inappropriate in this case,” he said.

Late Wednesday, police arrested 20-year-old Jahiem Brown and booked him into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of First Degree Murder, Aggravated assault; Use of a deadly weapon and&nbsp;Criminal possession of a firearm by a felon, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith.

Just before 1a.m. July 5, police responded to report of a shooting in the 200 Block SE Lawrence Street in Topeka, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith. Upon arrival, officers located Cantrell suffering from a gunshot wound. An ambulance transported him to an area hospital. 

Medical personnel pronounced him deceased, according to Monasmith.&nbsp; Police released no additional details Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrest 20-year-old Kansas man for alleged murder

MORRIS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a man wanted on a felony warrant.

Just after 5p.m. July 3, police saw 32-year-old Jonathan Heller in the 10 Block of Main Street in Council Grove, according to a media release.

Officers responded quickly to arrest him on requested charges of battery of a law enforcement officer, criminal damage to property, felony interference with law enforcement and disorderly conduct.

After Heller’s arrest, investigators collected new information and obtained a search warrant for his home.&nbsp; Heller faces additional drug charges, according to police.

Police capture Kansas man wanted on federal arrest warrant

Kan. — Louisville, Kentucky Metro police are investigating after a family from Reno County was struck by a vehicle in Downtown Louisville on Tuesday night. 

Nickerson High basketball player Ava Jones, her parents Amy and Trey and another juvenile were struck. Ava is in serious but stable condition, the parents are in critical condition and the other family member was treated for minor injuries.

According to information from the Louisville Police Department, just before 8 p.m. in the area of 2nd Street &amp; East Market Street a motorist, later identified as 33-year-old Michael Hurley of Lexington, Ind. struck the Jones family, who were pedestrians.

Jones and her family were in Louisville for an AAU basketball tournament with Wheat State Elite. Jones just signed with the University of Iowa basketball program over the weekend.

At the time of the accident, Hurley was heading east on Market and attempted to make a left turn onto 2nd Street when his car is said to have crossed on to the sidewalk and hit the family.

Hurley is accused of assault connected with the accident and the arrest report says drugs were involved. 

According to the complaint, he told officers at the scene he had taken Hydrocodone and "was so tired that he could not make the turn".&nbsp; The complaint also said his eyes were "pinpoint and droopy".

Blood was drawn for testing and Hurley did not have his driver's license.

Police: Kansas family injured after hit by car in Kentucky 

ATCHISON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a vehicle theft that led to a high-speed chase.

Just after&nbsp;10:30 a.m. Tuesday, police in Atchison, Kansas, were notified that a stolen 2012 Ford 250 two-tone brown truck, which had been reported stolen to the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Department on Monday, was headed towards the city of Atchison, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper reported he was in pursuit of this stolen truck southwest of Atchison. This pursuit continued west of Atchison and eventually the trooper lost sight of the fleeing truck.

Authorities later saw the vehicle near 17th and Country Club Road.&nbsp; The truck went southbound on 17th Street, across Main Street to Chestnut Street, left the roadway and struck a residence in the 1700 block Chestnut, according to Wilson.

The truck continued to 18th and Main, traveled west on Main, came back into Atchison headed eastbound on Main Street, struck a moving vehicle at 14th and Main and a second moving vehicle at 10th and Main. The truck continued to 4th and U.S. 59 where it crossed the Amelia Earhart bridge into Missouri.

Police recovered the truck later on Monday on Old Highway Road adjacent to Highway 45, just south of Sugar Lake.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Atchison Police Department and the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Department have a joint investigation underway as leads are being followed in an attempt to make an arrest.

Police search for suspect, recover stolen truck after 2-state chase 

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects for their involvement in a weekend murder.

Just after 5 a.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies were sent to a shooting call in the 4400 block of south Rock Road in rural Sedgwick County, according to Lt. Benjamin Blick.&nbsp;

During an additional search of the rural property, deputies found a man and woman deceased in the backyard of a residence the 4300 block of South Rock Road. They died from apparent gunshot wounds.

The names of the victims have not been released. They did not live at the location where they were killed.&nbsp;

Deputies booked him on requested charges of first degree murder and a Kansas Department of Corrections arrest and detain order, according to White.After he was released from the hospital and interviewed, deputies booked<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=20076411">&nbsp;Baeza</a>&nbsp;on requested charges of first-degree murder. Investigators still have individuals they want to interview in connection with the case, according to White. Suspect in Kansas double murder moved from hospital to jail

SALINA —A Kansas man who accidentally&nbsp; shot himself was later arrested.

Just after 7:30p.m. July 2, police were dispatched to the Village Inn, 453 S. Broadway in Salina for the report of shots fired in the parking lot, according to Salina Police Captain Gary Hanus.

When they arrived, they encountered Oscar Zamarron, 41, of Salina, who had a gunshot wound on his left wrist. During the investigation, officers determined that Zamarron had accidentally discharged the gun.

Hanus said Zamarron was transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center, where he was treated and released. Officers also discovered that Zamarron was not legally able to possess a firearm, so he was arrested on the following requested charges of Criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Criminal use of a weapon, Unlawful discharge of a firearm, Disorderly conduct

Just before 3:30p.m. July 1, police responded to the Fulton Convenience store, 601 East Fulton Street in Garden City, where a Dodge Grand Caravan had just been taken from the property, according to a media release.

A Finney County sheriff's deputy located the van near U.S. 83 and East Schulman Avenue and attempted a traffic stop. The driver identified as 39-year-old Richard Johnston, refused to stop.

A police officer located near U.S. 83 and East Spruce Street and the Kansas Highway Patrol assisted in the pursuit and it continued south into Haskell County.&nbsp; Ultimately the chase ended along Haskell County Road 140 where Johnston was arrested without further incident.

He is being held on requested charges of theft, flee and elude and interference with law enforcement. There were no injuries reported during or after the chase.

On June 30, the El Dorado Police Department, executed a search warrant on a home in El Dorado as part of an investigation reported by way of a cyber tip, received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), alleging the sexual exploitation of children through the use of electronic devices, according to a media release.

This search warrant led to the arrest of 29-year-old Adam Mefford of El Dorado, and charges have been filed through the Butler County District Court. 

The El Dorado Police Department is now an affiliate with the Internet Crimes Against Children task force. This will greatly benefit the community in addressing this particular heinous crime.

Cyber tip leads to arrest of Kan. man for alleged child sex crimes

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A local government in Kansas has agreed to pay $12.5 million to a man and his mother after he spent 23 years in prison for a double murder he did not commit.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, approved the settlement Thursday and said in a statement Friday that it admits no guilt in the wrongful conviction and two life sentences of Lamonte McIntyre in the mid 1990s.

McIntyre was 17 in 1994 when he was arrested in Kansas City for the shooting deaths of 21-year-old Doniel Quinn and 34-year-old Donald Ewing.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/f0aeacf5fd0e4297a8d7b0ca4cda363e">McIntyre was freed in 2017</a>&nbsp;after a local prosecutor asked the court to vacate his convictions and drop all charges, calling his case an example of “manifest injustice.” Prosecutors presented no physical evidence tying McIntyre to the killings and their case largely hinged on testimony that was allegedly coerced.

The following year, McIntyre and his mother sued the unified government and former Kansas City, Kansas, police detective Roger Golubski, who they have accused, along with other police, of framing McIntyre for the killings. Their lawsuit&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lawsuits-kansas-city-kansas-7b4c4af7410f67d20fd19cb2e9235aad">sought up to $123 million</a>&nbsp;in damages.

McIntyre and his mother have said Golubski coerced her into sex and then framed her teenage son for the double homicide because she rejected the detective’s later sexual advances. They also allege Golubski abused dozens of Black women for years and many officers were aware of his conduct.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/police-kansas-city-kansas-4d005737c9046b7d65363a6e82f93493">Federal authorities are investigating Golubski,</a>&nbsp;and the Kansas City, Kansas, police department revealed last October that it had been responding to subpoenas from the FBI since 2019 involving allegations against Golubski.

Golubski has denied the allegations. His attorney, Morgan Roach of Kansas City, did not immediately return phone messages left Friday at his office and on his cellphone seeking comment.

Thursday's settlement also resolves the lawsuit against Golubski, said attorney Cheryl Pilate, who represents McIntyre and his mother.

“Lamonte now hopes to put this painful chapter behind him and move forward with his life,” Pilate said in an email. “Lamonte remains deeply committed to the cause of justice, particularly in Wyandotte County, and will continue to be a voice for those who have suffered wrongful convictions or other injustices.”

In 2020, McIntyre was awarded a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/03a51b0fe56481f586ef8e031d2ffc2c">certificate of innocence</a>&nbsp;and $1.5 million from Kansas after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/5f6cd02cf633461eb20338733a76d398?utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow">the state attorney general's office initially fought his compensation claim</a>. McIntyre now lives in Arizona.

(AP) — A local government in Kansas has agreed to pay $12.5 million to a man and his mother after he spent 23 years in prison for a double murder he did not commit.The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, approved the settlement Thursday and said in a statement Friday that it admits no guilt in the wrongful conviction and two life sentences of Lamonte McIntyre in the mid 1990s.McIntyre was 17 in 1994 when he was arrested in Kansas City for the shooting deaths of 21-year-old Doniel Quinn and 34-year-old Donald Ewing.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/f0aeacf5fd0e4297a8d7b0ca4cda363e">McIntyre was freed in 2017</a>&nbsp;after a local prosecutor asked the court to vacate his convictions and drop all charges, calling his case an example of “manifest injustice.” Prosecutors presented no physical evidence tying McIntyre to the killings and their case largely hinged on testimony that was allegedly coerced.The following year, McIntyre and his mother sued the unified government and former Kansas City, Kansas, police detective Roger Golubski, who they have accused, along with other police, of framing McIntyre for the killings. Their lawsuit&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lawsuits-kansas-city-kansas-7b4c4af7410f67d20fd19cb2e9235aad">sought up to $123 million</a>&nbsp;in damages.McIntyre and his mother have said Golubski coerced her into sex and then framed her teenage son for the double homicide because she rejected the detective’s later sexual advances. They also allege Golubski abused dozens of Black women for years and many officers were aware of his conduct.<a href="https://apnews.com/article/police-kansas-city-kansas-4d005737c9046b7d65363a6e82f93493">Federal authorities are investigating Golubski,</a>&nbsp;and the Kansas City, Kansas, police department revealed last October that it had been responding to subpoenas from the FBI since 2019 involving allegations against Golubski.Golubski has denied the allegations. His attorney, Morgan Roach of Kansas City, did not immediately return phone messages left Friday at his office and on his cellphone seeking comment.Thursday's settlement also resolves the lawsuit against Golubski, said attorney Cheryl Pilate, who represents McIntyre and his mother.“Lamonte now hopes to put this painful chapter behind him and move forward with his life,” Pilate said in an email. “Lamonte remains deeply committed to the cause of justice, particularly in Wyandotte County, and will continue to be a voice for those who have suffered wrongful convictions or other injustices.”In 2020, McIntyre was awarded a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/03a51b0fe56481f586ef8e031d2ffc2c">certificate of innocence</a>&nbsp;and $1.5 million from Kansas after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/5f6cd02cf633461eb20338733a76d398?utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=SocialFlow">the state attorney general's office initially fought his compensation claim</a>. McIntyre now lives in Arizona.
