WICHITA— A former Kansas police officer and school district employee pleaded no contest to three charges accusing him of molesting underage boys, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Alex Robinson, 58, entered the plea Friday. His trial was scheduled to begin February 22. The crimes involved three victims who were abused in Wichita in 2011 and 2012. 

Robinson worked for the Wichita police department for 22 years.&nbsp; He was the Wichita Public Schools' safety services supervisor when he was arrested in January 2013. 

Robinson was facing eight charges. Those charges involved boys aged 11 to 14 and occurred over 12 years, beginning in 2000. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 13, according to the district attorney.

Puett says citizen tips led to the arrest of Marcus Brooks on Sunday afternoon by the Independent Police Department. Puett had requested the public’s help in locating Brooks, known to have lived and frequented the Platte City area, after the arrest of Stoughton.

The body of Ariel Anne-Rae Starcher of Independence was discovered when a road crew with the Missouri Department of Transportation spotted a bag in the ditch of Vincent Road south of Faucett on February 18th of last year. The road crew became suspicious and called in Buchanan County Sheriff’s Deputies to investigate. The deputies discovered Starcher’s body in the bag. Starcher was 21.

2nd arrest made in year-old case of body found in duffel bag 

KANSAS CITY (AP) — When massive demonstrations against racial injustice erupted across the nation last summer, protesters used an increasingly common tactic to draw attention to their cause: swarming out onto major roads to temporarily paralyze traffic.

This method sometimes resulted in searing images of drivers plowing through crowds, causing serious injuries and in some cases, deaths.

Now, Republican politicians across the country are moving to stop the road-blocking maneuver, proposing increased penalties for demonstrators who run onto highways and legal immunity for drivers who hit them. The bills are among dozens introduced in Legislatures aimed at cracking down on demonstrations.

“It’s not going to be a peaceful protest if you’re impeding the freedom of others,” said Rep. Kevin McDugle, the author of an Oklahoma bill granting criminal and civil immunity to people who drive into crowds on roads. “The driver of that truck had his family in there, and they were scared to death."

He referred to an incident in July in which a pickup truck pulling a horse trailer drove through Black Lives Matter protesters on Interstate 244 in Tulsa. Three people were seriously injured, including a 33-year-old man who fell from an overpass and was left paralyzed from the waist down.

Tumultuous demonstrations by left-leaning and right-leaning groups have stirred new debate about what tactics are acceptable free speech and which go too far. In addition to blocking roads, Black Lives Matter demonstrators have taken over parks and painted slogans on streets and structures, while right-wing groups have brandished firearms and stormed capitol buildings. Local authorities' responses have wavered as they try to avoid escalating conflicts.

Now legislators in Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Utah and about a dozen other states have introduced new counterprotest measures.

The traffic-blocking tactic has attracted the most concern because of the obvious hazard.

In one&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMhbUTQjfR8">particularly chilling incident</a>&nbsp;in Minneapolis, a large tanker truck drove at high speed through thousands of protesters gathered on a closed highway. Remarkably, no one was seriously hurt, though a criminal complaint says at least one protester suffered abrasions.

Mark Faulk, a longtime Oklahoma activist who was arrested last year for blocking a roadway, said dramatic tactics are necessary to get people's attention.

“The idea of escalating it to the point where you disrupt the convenience of the citizens and of the status quo, you have to do that sometimes to make a point," Faulk said.

But Carmyn Taylor, 20, recalled the sight of a pickup truck bearing down on protesters spread across the six-lane I-244 in Tulsa.

“The most vivid thing I remember is when I got pulled to the ground. I remember seeing both sets of wheels run over my legs, which was a little traumatizing," said Taylor, who suffered a broken leg and a sprained ankle. “For the first two weeks after the accident, I couldn't walk."

In Seattle, Summer Taylor, 24, was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ff3c4fb3a627d694b5d888dcd48c89b0">killed and another person was seriously injured</a>&nbsp;in July when a man drove his car into protestors on a closed Seattle freeway. A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2dfCHZ1FQg">graphic video</a>&nbsp;posted on social media showed the car swerving around several parked cars and slamming into the two protesters, sending them flying into the air.

In an incident in St. Louis in May, a 29-year-old man was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/261c0a07eb120c6ee7fe8890b069b3f0">dragged to his death</a>&nbsp;beneath a tractor-trailer that drove into a sign-carrying group on a road.

Whether drivers face criminal charges in such incidents depends on the circumstances of each case, prosecutors say. The tractor-trailer driver in St. Louis has not been criminally charged, while the driver of the car in Seattle has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/127e17d72b0bd1cbb137ed28a9604e2f">pleaded not guilty</a>&nbsp;to charges of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault and reckless driving.

District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler declined to file charges against the driver in Tulsa, saying several people in the crowd had attacked the vehicle with the driver’s children inside. But Kunzweiler stopped short of endorsing proposals for harsher penalties for protestors or blanket immunity for drivers.

“There are any number of laws already in place that are readily available to be enforced,” he said.

A bill granting drivers immunity for hitting protestors easily cleared an Oklahoma Senate committee recently on a 8-1 vote. Two others are pending in the state House.

But critics say the proposals are only designed to intimidate people, not to solve a problem.

“The biggest concern is that they chill speech and they chill folks gathering to protest,” said Nicole McAfee, policy director for the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

About 50 people were arrested during several days of protests in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Most of the arrests were for disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail, and rioting, a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. At least two men accused of burning a sheriff's van were charged under the state's anti-terrorism law, a felony that carries a sentence of up to life in prison. Those cases are pending.

Proposals in Oklahoma would increase the criminal penalties for blocking a roadway, including one making it a felony punishable by up to two years in prison, and making it more difficult for those arrested to be released from jail. Another bill would add participating in unlawful assemblies to the state's racketeering act aimed at organized crime.

State Rep. Emily Virgin, the Democratic leader in the Oklahoma House, said she wishes her Republican colleagues would focus on the underlying issues of police brutality and systemic racism instead of seeking ways to punish protesters.

“It seems that some of my colleagues took the wrong lesson from the demonstrations we saw this summer,” Virgin said.

New legislation would protect drivers who hit protestors

TOPEKA —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple charges after an arrest following a standoff.

Just after 10a.m. February 19, police were dispatched to the 1600 block of SW Central Park in Topeka on for a violent domestic disturbance, according to Lt. Kelvin Johnson. 

The caller was able to get out of the house and met with officers and informed them the suspect was inside with their three children. The suspect was wanted for a previous incident as well as the incidents that had just occurred. Attempts to make contact and have the suspect surrender were not successful and the Topeka Police Response Team and Crisis Negotiators were called to assist.

After several hours of negotiation, the children were eventually sent out of the house unharmed and the suspect peacefully surrendered and was transported to the Law Enforcement Center to be interviewed. At the conclusion of the interview, Joshua Wade, 35 of Topeka, was booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery, Domestic Aggravated Battery, Domestic Battery, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Criminal Damage, Felony Flee and Elude and Obstruction, according to Johnson.

Just before 1 p.m. February 16, police responded to the 800 block of South Third Street in Arkansas City for a report of a man asleep at the steering wheel of a vehicle that was stopped in the middle of the street, according to a media release from Arkansas City police.

The man later identified as 35-year-old Gary James Wayne Rommel awoke and drove away prior to officers arrival, but they contacted the reporting party, who had taken photographs of the vehicle and the suspect asleep behind its wheel.

The witness also had watched as the vehicle traveled south to Van Buren Avenue, turning westbound. An Arkansas City police officer traveled that same route and located the vehicle in the 600 block of West Van Buren Avenue, stopped in the oncoming lane with one of its front wheels in the south ditch.

The officer contacted&nbsp; Rommel, who was slumped over the center console with the locked vehicle in gear, but not running. Rommel was holding an aerosol can containing a substance that is commonly abused as an inhalant. As Rommel began to wake, he attempted to place the opening of the can in his mouth as the officer made his presence known and ordered him to stop.

Several requests were made to stop and the aerosol can was taken away from Rommel. An odor of alcohol also was present. He became irate and refused commands from police to sit back down. He continued to refuse to comply and began to fight an officer, eventually kicking the officer.

Additional officers arrived shortly after and Rommel was taken into custody without further incident.

Due to his apparent inhalation of the aerosol can’s contents, the Arkansas City Fire-EMS Department was dispatched to evaluate Rommel. After being checked out, he was transported directly to the Cowley County Jail after he again became noncompliant while in the back of a patrol vehicle.

Rommel was booked on requested charges of one misdemeanor count each of abuse of toxic vapors, driving under the influence of a combination of drugs (first offense), battery of a law enforcement officer and interference with law enforcement by obstructing apprehension.

ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (February 17, 2021) — The Arkansas City Police Department arrested an Arkansas City man Tuesday afternoon after he allegedly resisted arrest while under the influence.

Gary James Wayne Rommel, 35, was arrested on suspicion of one misdemeanor count each of abuse of toxic vapors, driving under the influence of a combination of drugs (first offense), battery of a law enforcement officer and interference with law enforcement by obstructing apprehension.

Rommel was transported to and booked into the Cowley County Jail in lieu of $6,000 bond through Cowley County District Court in Arkansas City. He remained in custody at the time of this release.

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have two suspects in custody.

Just before 6p.m. February 17, deputies responded to the 2200 block of SW 57th Street for a suspicious vehicle, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

 An observant citizen noticed a vehicle that did not belong to that residence. Deputies arrived and located two suspects inside a home. They arrested Whitney G. Lariviere, 32, and Ulric E. Sampson, 31, both of Topeka.

&nbsp;During the investigation, a K9 unit was deployed and deputies also found narcotics.

Lariviere was arrested for a misdemeanor warrant out of the City of Topeka and on requested charges of burglary, theft, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Sampson was arrested for a felony warrant out of Shawnee County and on requested charges of burglary, theft, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Observant neighbor helps deputies catch Kan. burglary suspects

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Two more Missouri residents have been charged in last month’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

The FBI said Zachary John Wilson, 31, was taken into custody without incident Friday in his hometown of Springfield on federal charges of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building.

His arrest came on the same day that 28-year-old Nicholas Burton Reimler, of Cedar Hill, made his initial appearance in federal court on charges of violent entry or disorderly conduct and entry to a restricted building or grounds. Both charges are misdemeanors that carry maximum sentences ranging from six months to a year behind bars.

The men are among dozens of people who have been charged in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol while Congress was meeting to certify Democrat Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 presidential race. Thousands of supporters of then-President Donald Trump descended on the Capitol after a rally nearby that day, and more than 800 are believed to have made it inside the building during the siege. Five people died in the melee, including a Capitol police officer who was struck in the head with a fire extinguisher.

According to court documents, an anonymous tipster sent the FBI screenshots of a Facebook post Wilson made announcing he was one of the first people to enter the Capitol and that he had gone to the office of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, the Springfield News-Leader&nbsp;<a href="https://www.news-leader.com/story/news/crime/2021/02/19/us-capitol-riot-insurrection-springfield-man-arrested-connection-fbi-washington-dc/4512003001/" target="_blank">reported</a>.

Wilson acknowledged during an FBI interview that he had gone inside the Capitol, adding that he was a supporter of Trump and he wanted his “voice to be heard,” according to court records. But Wilson denied destroying any property while inside.

FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said Wilson was being held by the U.S. Marshals Service and that she didn’t know if he had an attorney yet.

Federal charging documents detailing the allegations against Reimler were not immediately released.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Noelle Collins followed the recommendation of federal prosecutors and released Reimler on his own recognizance. Reimler said his family was in the process of hiring an attorney for him. Cedar Hill is an unincorporated town about 35 miles (56 kilometers) southwest of St. Louis.

Reimler posted comments to Facebook supportive of Trump and critical of Biden and Democrats. On Dec. 31, he reposted “JANUARY SIXTH, SEE YOU IN DC!” from then-President Trump.

Two more Missouri men charged in Capitol insurrection

MANHATTAN—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a series of alleged rapes that have occurred in Ogden, Kansas from 2004-2012 and have made an arrest.

On November 11, 2020, officers filed a report for several past rape and aggravated criminal sodomy offenses in Ogden, listing a now 21-year-old female as the victim and a now 46-year-old male known to her as the suspect, according to Riley County Police Department spokesperson Aaron Wintermote.

On Friday afternoon, police arrested 46-year-old Michael James Tschantz at the Naples Texas Police Department on a Riley County District Court warrant for five counts of rape of a child under 14 years of age.

Tschantz is currently confined in the Morris County, Texas Jail on a $600,000 bond pending extradition to the Riley County Jail.

RCPD: Suspect arrested for series of child rapes in Riley County

WINDERMERE, Fla. (AP) — Former All-Star baseball player Johnny Damon was arrested Friday in central Florida on a charge of resisting an officer after he was pulled over for suspicion of driving under the influence, according to court and jail records.

Damon, 47, was booked into the Orange County Jail early Friday after an incident in Windermere, Florida, a wealthy suburb of Orlando popular with professional athletes. He is charged with resisting an officer without violence, a first-degree misdemeanor.

An online court docket did not show an attorney listed for Damon who could comment. Jail records show that Damon's wife, Michelle Mangan-Damon, also was arrested. She is facing charges of battery on an officer and resisting with violence.

A police officer pulled over Damon's SUV after it swerved, hit a curb and drove past a stop sign, according to the Orlando Sentinel, citing a police report.

Authorities said Damon slurred his words and he seemed unsteady on his feet. When asked how much he had had to drink, Damon said, “Just a little bit," according to the police report.

Damon, who grew up in Orlando, was a two-time All-Star outfielder who played for seven Major League Baseball teams from 1995 to 2012. He was a key member of the 2004 World Series champion Boston Red Sox team that broke the franchise's 86-year title drought. He later signed with Boston's hated rivals, the New York Yankees, and helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series. The Royals selected Damon in the first round of the 1992 Major League Baseball draft. He played for the Royals from August of 1995-2000

Former KC Royal Johnny Damon, wife arrested in Florida  

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities investigating a New Year's Day shooting have arrested&nbsp;22-year-old Deajuan C. Smith of Wichita, according to Officer Paul Cruz.

At 4 a.m. January 1, police responded to a shooting at a home in the 2600 block of North Bullinger. Upon arrival, officers located 26-year-old Nicholas Sims of Wichita, who had been shot. He was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The investigation revealed a party was taking place at the home with at least 50 individuals. During the party, an argument ensued between Sims and Deajuan Smith inside the home.

The argument moved to outside of the home, where Smith shot Sims, according to Cruz. The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Kansas man arrested for fatal New Year's party shooting

KANSAS CITY —A man faces felony charges after police in Blue Springs found the man's girlfriend stranded in a bathtub and two 5-year-old girls malnourished and describing abuse, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

According to court records, police were dispatched on Feb. 12, to the 400 block of SW Moreland School Road and found in the residence a 27-year-old woman stuck in the bathtub. 

She suffers from Multiple Sclerosis and was unable to get out of the tub. The woman was suffering from horrific wounds from sitting in the tub reportedly for days. 

She was sitting in inches of human waste. A doctor, after examining her, stated that she faced a life-threatening situation if she had not been treated. 

In a bedroom in the house, police also found two malnourished 5-year-old girls. One was "skin and bones" in the words of one police officer and the girls were eating out of a cereal bag. 

The girls underwent a forensic interview later at the Child Protection Center and detailed other abuse. In 2020, the Children's Division reported repeated contacts with the victims and told police that the defendant, by agreement, was not supposed to have contact with the girls.&nbsp;

Police arrested Bryan Snow, 30, Blue Springs. He faces two counts of felony Endangering the Welfare of a Child Creating Substantial Risk 1st Degree and a felony charge of Domestic Abuse 2nd Degree, according to the Jackson County Attorney's office. Prosecutor's requested a bond of $65,000.

Man accused of leaving disabled girlfriend in bathtub, abusing children

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man who was charged with a misdemeanor after he shared a social media post that encouraged violence in suburban Wichita neighborhoods during last summer’s racial injustice protests has been placed on diversion.

Rashawn L. Mayes Jr. of Park City was placed on diversion Thursday and ordered to write a letter of apology to Wichita police, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office said.

Mayes and Michael E. Boston Jr. of Wichita&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/840a8ffd403d4b82e582a0b323903687">were arrested&nbsp;</a>after a post on Snapchat urged groups of people to meet in several locations around Sedgwick County, according to court documents.

Their arrests caused a public outcry that led to their prompt release.

Mayes was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit a riot. Boston will not be charged, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said.

Mayes’ attorney, John Rapp, said his client is happy to have the incident settled.

Mayes’ mother said on Facebook in June that her son didn’t create the post and had instead shared it to warn other Park City residents to stay away from Park City and Bel Aire because of potential violence.

Kan. man sentenced for social media post during violent protests 

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities arrested a Kansas teen&nbsp;as part of an ongoing drug investigation.

On Wednesday, members of the Topeka Police Department Narcotics Unit and the Shawnee County Drug Task Force served a search warrant in the 2800 Block of SE Minnesota in Topeka, according to Lt. Jerry Monasmith.

While conducting the search warrant, authorities found 18-year-old Yancy Whitehead, had marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm.

Kansas teen jailed after drug task force investigation 

SALINE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after an arrest in Salina.

Just after 3p.m. Wednesday, a police officer driving by StuJo's Carwash, 120 North Broadway Boulevard in Salina noticed a suspect and vehicle that matched the description of those involved in a theft from Menards in Salina on Monday, according to Police Captain Paul Forrester.

In that case, the suspect entered the store and left with two Schlage Sense Bluetooth door handle locks, valued at $400. The suspect, described as a man wearing a red Nike hoodie, gray sweatpants, a black hat, and black facemask, left Menards in a silver four-door hatchback station wagon type vehicle.

When the officer attempted to make contact with the wanted suspect at StuJo's, the the man disobeyed the officer's orders and left in a 1997 silver Ford Escort station wagon with a temporary tag.

Another officer located the vehicle parked in the alley behind a residence in the 100 block of South 11th Street.&nbsp; Officers made contact with the resident and learned the suspect, identified as Dillon Sonnier, 22, Salina, was hiding inside the house. He was located by officers hiding in a closet.

Officers then learned that on Jan. 24, other officers responded to Walmart, 2900 South Ninth Street, for the report of a theft. In that case, a suspect had taken two barcode stickers from two 10-cent tumbler cups, placed them onto two speakers valued at $288, and purchased those speakers for 20 cents, according to Forrester. The person named as the suspect in that case was Sonnier.

Police arrested Sonnier was arrested on&nbsp; requested charges that include Felony theft, two or more prior convictions, Theft by deception, two or more convictions, interference with law enforcement, Driving while suspended, Failure to stop at stop sign and for an Improper signal\, according to Forrester.

Police find Kansas theft suspect hiding in a closet

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on child sex allegations after an arrest.

On Tuesday afternoon, MotorCity Justice, the organization helping law enforcement identify and capture alleged child sexual predators,&nbsp; contacted the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, according to Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

MotorCity Justice shared information with the Sheriff’s office that led deputies to believe an individual was attempting to solicit unlawful activity with a juvenile.

Deputies and detectives placed an area in the 3700 block of 8th Street in Great Bend under surveillance. Shortly after 5p.m. deputies made contact with 32-year-old Lonny R. Miller of Larned. 

Deputies had reason to believe probable cause existed that Miller was attempting to solicit a 15-year-old for sex. 

The deputies placed Miller under arrest and transported him to the Barton County Jail without incident. He was booked on requested charges of indecent solicitation of a child, attempted exploitation of a child and electronic solicitation. He’s being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond, according to Bellendir.

🎥 Social media tip: Kan. man wanted to meet teen for sex

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a traffic stop.

Just before noon Monday, a sheriff’s deputy stopped a southbound 2002 Infiniti QX4 for allegedly committing a traffic infraction near 110th Road on U.S Highway 75, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The investigation into the traffic stop led to the discovery of illegal contraband. Deputies placed the passenger, Phil Amos Davis, 67, of Topeka, under arrest on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Sheriff: Kansas man back in jail after traffic stop

KANSAS CITY —Nearly four years after the fatal shooting, murder charges were filed Wednesday in the homicide of 3-year-old Marcus Haislip III who was shot in May 2017 near 54th and Park in Kansas City, according to Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker.

Derrick D. Wren Jr.,21, faces 2nd Degree Murder, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and two counts of 1st Degree Assault.

"I hope our community will see how many in law enforcement have worked over the last three-plus years to bring justice and to bring charges against the defendant," Prosecutor Baker stated. "We never gave up in our efforts.

"I especially want to thank our partners at the ATF and the Kansas City Police Department," Baker added. "Together, they've followed the leads and developed the evidence we need to obtain charges."

According to court records, Kansas City police responding on May 12, 2017 to shots fired in the area of 54th and Brooklyn. 

Moments later, they received information that a vehicle had arrived at Research Medical Center with three gunshot victims, one confirmed deceased. 

The deceased victim was 3-year-old Marcus Haislip III. He was shot in his car seat in a vehicle. Multiple people advised that they saw a man fire his weapon. He wore a red hooded sweatshirt and fired a long gun from the porch on Park Avenue. A witness said the description sounded like Derrick D. Wren Jr. He also had been seen with a long gun like the one described. Multiple shell casings were recovered at the crime scene as well as a Styrofoam cup.

In 2019, the Missouri Highway Patrol notified detectives that DNA from the Styrofoam cup matched the defendant, according to court records. In September and November of 2020, new witnesses told detectives that the defendant had confessed to fatally shooting the 3-year-old Haislip III. Wren said he used a 7.62 mm pistol with a 30 to 50-round clip.

Prosecutors requested a bond of $250,000 cash. The defendant is currently in federal custody and was served this morning with a warrant for his arrest in this case.

"Many people in Kansas City don't realize the efforts that still go in to solving cases just because they're not in the news this week," said Kansas City Police Chief Rick Smith.&nbsp; "I'd like to compliment the detectives and agents on the ATF who never gave up."

After 4 years, murder charges filed in death of Kansas City boy

COWLEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a burglary and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 8 p.m. February 11, police received a report of three suspicious individuals who were allegedly attempting to enter parked vehicles in the 1400 block of South A Street in Arkansas City, according to a media release.

Officers began searching the area located the three suspect in the 1200 block of South Third Street. Two of the suspects fled the area and were not immediately apprehended. 

Police interviewed one of the suspects and learned he was a juvenile, found in possession of items they suspected to be stolen.

Through the course of the investigation, officers learned the three suspects allegedly stole items from multiple vehicles in Arkansas City. The two suspects who fled later were located and apprehended.

One of the suspects also was a juvenile male and the third suspect later was identified as 21-year-old Aaron Christian Griffith.

Police determined the three suspects allegedly stole two handguns from different vehicles in Ark City, one in the 700 block of North Second Street and the other in the 400 block of West Walnut Avenue.

Police have recovered the handguns. Officers suspect the three were checking for unlocked vehicles throughout the city, ranging from Cowley College to the 700 block of North Second Street. The suspects allegedly attempted to enter several vehicles in the 1300 blocks of South A, B and C streets.

Griffith remains in custody on requested felony charges of burglary of a motor vehicle, two felony counts each of contributing to a child’s misconduct and theft of a firearm, one felony count of criminal possession of a firearm by felon, and one misdemeanor count of theft of property.

The juvenile were arrested suspicion of three felony counts of burglary of a motor vehicle, two felony counts of theft of a firearm, and one misdemeanor count of theft of property. They later were released to the custody of a guardian.

Police catch Kan. man who took handguns from vehicles

KANSAS CITY — The family of a 5-year-old girl left in a coma following a crash involving Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid says the girl is now awake, according to a statement on a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/5-year-old-ariel-medical-expenses">GoFundMe</a>&nbsp;page for Ariel Young. On Tuesday afternoon Kansas City Police reported she is now breathing on her own but remains unresponsive, according to a statement on the agency's web site.

The girl has been hospitalized since the Feb. 4 crash. Reid is head coach Andy Reid’s son. Britt Reid was initially placed on administrative leave following the multi-vehicle crash. He's no longer employed by the team. Police said the crash happened near the team’s training complex next to Arrowhead Stadium when Reid's truck slammed into two cars on the side of the road. 

Police say Reid admitted to having “two or three drinks” before the crash.

Last week, a police spokeswoman said an investigation into whether Reid was impaired before the accident could take several days to complete. Tuesday afternoon, Kansas City Police said their investigation of the accident continues.

Britt Reid has been in legal trouble several times.

He was arrested in January 2007 in Pennsylvania a road-rage incident in which he pointed a gun at another driver, and he was sentenced to up to 23 months in jail and five years of probation after pleading guilty to charges of carrying an unlicensed firearm, simple assault, possession of a controlled substance and possession of an instrument of crime.

Seven months later, Reid was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to up to six months in jail.

Reid appeared to get his life on track, beginning his coaching career as an intern for his father with the Eagles in 2009. He spent the next two years as a graduate assistant at Temple, his alma mater, before joining the staff in Kansas City.

After two seasons as a defensive quality control coach, Reid was promoted to assistant defensive line coach. He then spent three seasons as the defensive line coach before shifting to outside linebackers for the past two seasons.
