TOPEKA –&nbsp; The attorney general’s office has filed two lawsuits against out-of-state pop-up sellers of counterfeit Kansas City Chiefs and Super Bowl LIV merchandise, according to Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said today.The lawsuits were filed as a part of a coordinated enforcement action in partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS, Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) and Topeka Police Department (TPD). AG files lawsuits against Chiefs merchandise counterfeiters in Kan.

SEDGWICK COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a homicide and have a suspect in custody.

On Thursday, Laura Branning, 30, Wichita, on requested charges of arson and criminal desecration unauthorized control of a dead body. The arrest is in connection with a body found in a burning SUV in Wichita.

Just before 4a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of shots fired near the 1700 Block of South El Pico in Wichita,&nbsp;according to Captain Brent Allred.

Police located a 2002 Ford Expedition engulfed in flames in a grassy area near an apartment building. Fire crews responded and extinguished the fire and found the body of an individual in the SUV.

Investigators are working with the regional forensics science center to determine the person's identity and confirm the cause of death, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Through their investigation, police were able to determine Branning's involvement with the fire of the vehicle.

Fire department arson investigators are also assisting police to determine if there was an accelerant on or inside the SUV.&nbsp;

Branning has previous convictions that include flee and attempt to elude law enforcement and for possession of narcotic drugs, according to Davidson.

Kan. woman arrested after body found in burned SUV

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas girl after a violent attack.

Just after 4:30p.m. Thursday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center was contacted in reference to a disturbance that had occurred at the Boys and Girls Club - Montara Unit, on SW Westview Road, according to Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.&nbsp;

Deputies arrived and investigated an incident involving a 15-year-old girl who gained entry into the facility and battered a 15-year-old girl who was working at the Boys and Girls Club.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Another juvenile female arrived with the suspect but a preliminary investigation indicates that only the suspect was involved in the altercation with the teen victim.&nbsp;&nbsp;The suspect and her acquaintance then left the facility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Deputies made contact with the teen suspect and her family at their residence and she was transported to the Shawnee County Juvenile Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated Battery and Intimidation of a Witness, according to Stallbaumer.

Kansas girl arrested for attack at Boys and Girls Club

FINNEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man in connection with a violent attack on a woman in Garden City.

Just after 1:30p.m. Wednesday, police responded to the 1200 Block of East Fulton Avenue in Garden City in reference to a battery in progress involving a man identified as&nbsp;39-year-old Tommy Lee Aguilar and woman, according to Sgt. Lana Urteaga.

Police separated Aguilar from the woman and immediately detained him.

Investigators learned a physical altercation occurred between the two at another location in Garden City. The woman attempted to get away and fled to the East Fulton address&nbsp; where officers arrived in time to arrest Aguilar.

The woman sustained multiple injuries including significant injuries as a result of being strangled and beaten by Aguilar. EMS treated the woman at the scene and she was later treated at St. Catherine Hospital, according to Urteaga.

Aguilar is being held on requested charges of attempted-murder, aggravated domestic battery, violation of a protection order and interference with law enforcement.

Police: Kan. man jailed after violent attack on woman

TOPEKA, Kan. – Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas woman on drug charges after discovering a large quantity of meth in a narcotics interdiction operation earlier this week in Shawnee County.

On Monday, members of the Topeka Police Department Narcotics and K-9 Units in partnership with the Shawnee County Drug Task Force conducted a narcotics interdiction operation in the 1200 block SE Locust in Topeka, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Koenen.

The operation resulted in the seizure of nearly 15 pounds of methamphetamine, which has an estimated local street value of $75,000.

As a result of the investigation, 37-year-old Angelica M. Alvarez was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges that include Distribution of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Aggravated Child Endangerment and Use of a Communication Device in furtherance of a felony drug violation.

Police arrested Jalen Gill, 18, of Manhattan on a Riley County District Court warrant for attempted 2nd degree murder, aggravated endangering a child x 3, aggravated assault, and criminal discharge of a firearm at an occupied building.&nbsp;

The victim was treated and released from Via Christi.

Gill Is currently confined in the Riley County Jail on a $150,000.00 bond.&nbsp;

Manhattan teen arrested for alleged attempted-murder

PHILLIPS COUNTY —One person is in custody following a series of burglaries in Phillips County.

The case&nbsp; includes burglaries in area churches and a grade school, according the the sheriff's office.

"On December 23 and 24, 2019, the Logan Grade School, Logan United Methodist and Catholic churches and the Luctor Christian Reformed Church were burglarized," the department said. "We're pleased to announce that we have arrested one individual that was involved."

Phillip Michael Byrant, 23, Norton was arrested on suspicion of four counts of burglary, two counts of attempted burglary, nine counts of contributing to a child's misconduct, three counts of theft and three counts of criminal damage to property.

Byrant remains in custody in lieu of a $180,000 bond.

Additional arrests in the case are pending according to the department.

Both are currently out on bond awaiting trial.

Dickinson County authorities arrest two people on drug related allegations

COWLEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man on multiple charges after a tip from the public.

On January 16, police were dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of North Seventh Street in Arkansas City for a reported burglary, according to a media release from police.&nbsp; The department subsequently posted surveillance video showing a suspect approaching the garage and driving a dark-colored Dodge Journey.

“With the assistance of our community, investigators received a tip on the identity of the masked burglar,” said ACPD Capt. Eric Burr. “Patrol officers and detectives were able to link the possible suspect to property removed from the garage.”

On January 26, police&nbsp;officers were in the area of the 1300 block of North Fourth Street when they spotted the potential suspect. After observing the officers, the suspect allegedly ducked into a nearby residence. Officers were able to talk with the suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Bryson Daniel Rhodes and brought him in for questioning. They eventually arrested Rhodes for the January 16 burglary.

An additional case later surfaced in which an Arkansas City man residing in the 1300 block of North Third Street had reported the theft of a weed eater and socket set on Jan. 1.

A search warrant was executed at a home in the 1300 block of North Fourth Street in connection with both cases. Additional charges were added to Rhodes’ booking for the second theft case.

Rhodes is being held in the Cowley County jail on requested charges of&nbsp; burglary of a non-dwelling, two misdemeanor counts of theft, and one misdemeanor count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kan. burglary suspect identified on security camera, arrested

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 10p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a domestic violence disturbance at a home in the&nbsp;1100 block of South Hiram, according to officer Charley Davidson.&nbsp; 

Upon arrival, officers learned that a suspect later identified as 36-year-old Samuel Higgins drove his 2000 Tan Ford Taurus into the residence occupied by six individuals, which included four woman ages 9, 12, 32, and 58, as well as a 58-year-old man and a 3-year-old boy.&nbsp; There was damage to the home but no injuries to the occupants, although they were very afraid.

Other officers were sent to the 2600 block of South Larkin for a disturbance with shots fired.&nbsp; Upon arrival, they contacted a 37-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman both family members of Higgins, who were leaving their home to drive back to the 1100 block of South Hiram.&nbsp; 

They reported that Higgins reversed his vehicle towards them at a high rate of speed.&nbsp; The 37-year-old man then fired a handgun multiple times striking Higgins’ vehicle and Higgins fled.&nbsp; No one was injured.

Higgins then returned to the residence in the 1100 block of S. Hiram and rammed a Jeep owned by one of the occupants of the residence, causing damage to the vehicle.

An officer gave instructions for Higgins’ to exit the vehicle.&nbsp; Higgins refused to comply, battered the officer, and reversed the vehicle, dragging the officer.&nbsp; The officer then entered the driver’s side of the vehicle, and Higgins put the car in drive and drove towards a utility pole.&nbsp; 

The officer was able to steer the vehicle away and onto the curb where the vehicle became disabled.&nbsp; Assisting officers arrived, and Higgins was arrested after continuing to physically resist.

No officers were injured.&nbsp; Higgins was evaluated by EMS for minor injuries due to the use of a Taser by an officer.

Higgins is being held on requested charges that include nine counts of aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, criminal damage to property, resisting arrest and DUI.

Kansas man dragged officer, rammed vehicle into home

SEDGWICK COUNTY —The Wichita Police Department (WPD) has arrested a 15-year-old boy&nbsp; for criminal possession of a firearm by a juvenile and possession of a firearm on school grounds.

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the WPD School Resource Officer (SRO) at Heights High, 5301 N. Hillside, was contacted by school staff regarding an anonymous tip received of the 15-year-old male having a gun at the school, according to officer Charley Davidson.

The USD 259 security personnel and SRO followed up on the tip, which led to the arrest.&nbsp; A handgun was also recovered.&nbsp; There were no threats made to any students, no threats of violence on school grounds and no disruptions to the school.&nbsp; Furthermore, no one was injured.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

It was reported to police that 42-year-old Lucas Scales of Wichita was experiencing a mental health crisis, according to Davidson. He was reported to be armed and had set a garage on fire.&nbsp; When officers arrived they found scales sitting on the back porch of the residence.

They talked to Scales and arrested him on requested charges of arson and an aggravated weapons violation, according to Davidson.&nbsp; Offices also recovered a knife and several lighters at the scene.

Scales has previous convictions for criminal possession of a weapon, aggravated robbery and aggravated escape from custody.

Fire department crews responded to extinguish the fire. There was minimal damage and no injuries, according to Davidson.&nbsp; Scales is being held on a $50,000 bond, <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=5699">according to online jail records.</a>

Just after 9:30a.m. Monday, a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a 1992 Buick in the 3300 block of SE West Edge Road for a tag that did not belong to that vehicle, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The driver, Janna L. Marshno, 33, Mayetta, was arrested&nbsp; for multiple warrants and multiple charges including&nbsp;Felony identity theft out of Shawnee County, Misdemeanor forgery out of Atchison County, Misdemeanor burglary, theft, criminal damage, and forgery out of Doniphan County, Misdemeanor shoplifting out of the city of Topeka

Marshno is also facing charges of driving with an expired driver’s license, forgery, identity theft, mail theft, and possession of methamphetamine. Mail and checks from multiple locations, including Manhattan and Kansas City, were found inside the vehicle.

Marshno is being held in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.

Just before 10a.m. Tuesday, a US Marshals Task Force attempted to arrest .Henderson in the 3800 block of SW Nottingham Road, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.&nbsp; 

Henderson was sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2006 Pontiac Torrent parked in the driveway of a residence.&nbsp; The Task Force attempted to block the Pontiac with their state parole vehicle.&nbsp; 

The Pontiac rammed the state parole vehicle and fled the area.&nbsp; A Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office deputy, who is assigned to the Task Force, was assisting with the arrest and pursued the Pontiac.&nbsp; The pursuit lasted a few blocks until Mr. Henderson lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree in the 3800 block of SW Worwick Town Road.

U.S. Marshals captures wanted Kansas felon after chase, crash

Wichita, Kan. (AP) —A Kansas woman faces a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals after a caged and starving dog was discovered next to a trash dumpster earlier this month.

Raykesha Hardyway, 26, made a first appearance in court Tuesday in a case that accuses her of “unlawfully and knowingly” abandoning “a pit bull named Kodak ... without making provisions for its proper care."

Court records do not list a defense attorney for her.

The pit bull-boxer mix was alive but “extremely emaciated” when it was found locked in a kennel. The complaint filed in the case alleges the dog was left on or about Jan. 8.

Police started investigating on Jan. 9 after receiving a call from the Wichita Animal Action League, a local animal rescue organization. Police have said Hardyway was arrested four days later after tips and witness interviews.

The Wichita Animal Action League has said in online posts that the dog, which is now named “Bowie,” is about 2 years old and weighs about half of what it should. The organization is caring for the dog and expects he will be ready for adoption in spring or early summer.

A criminal bench trial is scheduled for Feb. 13.

On January 11, 20 and 23, police responded to three separate armed robberies at All Out Detox, 3303 South Seneca;&nbsp; Jump Start, 1141 East 37th Street and Dominos Pizza, 4734 South Broadway all in Wichita,&nbsp; according to officer Charley Davidson.

In each instance, employee told police an unknown suspected entered the business, pointed a gun and demanded money. The suspect took cash and fled in a dark colored van.

Through the investigation, police determined 39-year-old Jacob York was involved. Police located him on Monday in the 700 Block of North Anna in Wichita. They arrested him without incident, according to Davidson. 

He <a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/sheriffinmates/SheriffInmateDetail.aspx?nameId=211187">is being held </a>on requested charges of aggravated robbery, drug paraphernalia charges and various traffic violations, according to online jail records. On December 31,&nbsp; management at Casey's, 725 West Schilling Road in Salina contacted police to report that an employee was believed to have been stealing money from the register, according to Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva.

Police launched an investigation that included obtaining access to the store's accounting records and surveillance video. It was determined, based on video evidence, that during the period between 5 a.m. on Nov. 23 and 6 p.m. on Dec. 30 an employee took a total of $1,650 from the register.

Police arrested Marquez Devoe Patterson, 29, of Salina, on requested charges that include felony theft.&nbsp; The investigation is continuing to determine whether additional money was stolen, according to Villanueva.

CHEROKEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating suspects on drug charges after a traffic stop.

On Sunday morning, the Kansas Highway Patrol made a large seizure of Meth and other drugs near Baxter Springs, according to a social media report from Baxter Springs police.

Police and Baxter Springs Fire Department hosted the visit and assisted in cutting open the secret panels where the drugs were hidden. 

"A big thanks to the Highway Patrol for making the big busts. Ended up with 33 pounds of meth."

Just before 2:30p.m. Jan. 24,&nbsp; the Great Bend Police Department responded to The Reserves at Trail Ridge Apartments located at 811 Grant Street in Great Bend in reference an ongoing narcotics investigation.

Upon arrival, the Great Bend Police Department executed a narcotics search warrant inside apartment #221, where Elijah Cheney, age 22, resides. During a thorough search of the apartment, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and items of evidence for distribution were located inside of the apartment.

Steven Sexton II, age 31, and Cheney were located at the apartment and placed under arrest. A third individual identified as a 17-year-old was&nbsp; and arrested as well.&nbsp;

Great Bend Police Department K-9 Officer, along with K-9 Menta responded to the scene to assist. Menta indicated to an odor of illegal narcotics coming from Sexton's vehicle. The vehicle was secured and a second search warrant for the vehicle was executed for illegal narcotics.

During the execution of the vehicle search, Great Bend Police detectives located marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm.

Cheney and Sexton were transported to the Barton County Detention Center and booked in lieu of bond. The juvenile female was arrested and later released to Juvenile Intake.

2 adults, teen arrested during drug bust at Great Bend apartment

SALINE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a weekend altercation in Salina.

Just after 2:30p.m. Saturday,&nbsp;police were sent to the 1200 block of Prospect in Salina after report of William Kelley, 36, of Salina, getting into a verbal altercation at a family member's residence involving domestic relations and children, according to&nbsp;Salina Police Detective Sergeant David Villanueva.

Kelley left the residence with a shotgun before police arrived.

They arrested him on&nbsp;requested charges of trespassing and criminal possession of a firearm by a felon. He has a previous drug conviction and has been out of prison since May of 2016.

Police: Kansas felon had shotgun during alleged family dispute

JACKSON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged drug distribution.

Just after 6p.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies conducted a drug investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine in Jackson County, according to sheriff Tim Morse.

As a result of the investigation, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a&nbsp; suspect in the 300 block of Vermont Street in Holton. The suspect, Jordan Thomas Monaghan, 24, of Holton, had been driving a 1986 Mazda pickup truck. A quantity of methamphetamine was found in his possession. 

Monaghan was arrested by Jackson County Sheriff deputies and transported to the Jackson County Jail. Monaghan was booked into the jail on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, distribution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine, use of communication facility; in the commission of a felony drug crime, attempted use of communication facility; in the commission of a felony drug crime and possession of drug paraphernalia.&nbsp;

 </figure>JACKSON COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged drug distribution.Just after 6p.m. Saturday, sheriff's deputies conducted a drug investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine in Jackson County, according to sheriff Tim Morse.As a result of the investigation, deputies conducted a traffic stop on a&nbsp; suspect in the 300 block of Vermont Street in Holton. The suspect, Jordan Thomas Monaghan, 24, of Holton, had been driving a 1986 Mazda pickup truck. A quantity of methamphetamine was found in his possession. Monaghan was arrested by Jackson County Sheriff deputies and transported to the Jackson County Jail. Monaghan was booked into the jail on requested charges that include possession of methamphetamine, distribution and attempting to distribute methamphetamine, use of communication facility; in the commission of a felony drug crime, attempted use of communication facility; in the commission of a felony drug crime and possession of drug paraphernalia.&nbsp;

CLARK COUNTY, Kan. — Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects after a high speed chase in a rural Kansas field.

Just after 2p.m. Friday, Clark County Undersheriff Wally Long made a traffic stop on a 2018 Jeep with Colorado tags just East of Minneola on U.S. 54, according to a media release.

 When the officer went to exit his vehicle, the Jeep left at a high rate of speed eastbound on U.S. 54 attempting to flee from the officer and the stop. 

Undersheriff Long pursued the vehicle. At that point another vehicle, a 2007 Gold Cadillac attempted to move over into the way of the pursuing patrol unit. The Jeep left the highway and drove south into a field. The Cadillac then got in front of the pursing officer and attempted to block him from pursuing the Jeep.

The Undersheriff drove around the Cadillac and continued to pursue the Jeep that was located in a field approx. 2 ½ miles South of U.S. 54, just west of the Ford/Clark County line. 

Officers from Ford and Meade County assisted in stopping the Cadillac. The driver identified as Yolanda Marie Ruiz, 29, Wichita, of the vehicle was taken into custody.

After other officers arrived on scene including Kansas Highway Patrol and Dodge City Police Department a perimeter was setup and a police tracking K9 was deployed and tracked the driver of the Jeep which he had abandoned in the field. The driver Martez Romello Ricks, 25, Liberal, Kansas was arrested. Ricks was taken to Minneola Hospital for treatment of wounds he sustained from the K9 when taken into custody.

Ricks has spent time in prison for obstruction, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and four drug convictions, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.&nbsp; He was discharged in February of 2019 after some time in the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility.

Both Ricks and Ruiz are being held in the Clark County Jail. The case will be presented to the Clark County Attorney for formal charges to be filed in this case.&nbsp;

Kan. man hospitalized from K9 wounds during arrest after high-speed chase

On Wednesday afternoon,&nbsp; Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a northbound 1999 Honda Civic near 214th Road south of Holton for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

 A Jackson County Sheriff’s K-9 responded to the scene. The K-9 alerted on the vehicle, which resulted in the search of the vehicle. The investigation resulted in locating a quantity of marijuana and methamphetamine. 

The driver, Christina Ann Armstrong, 42, of Seneca was arrested by deputies. Armstrong was booked into the Jackson County Jail for the following: Felony possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and felony interference with law enforcement.&nbsp;

Sheriff's K9 helps in arrest of Kansas drug suspect

CHASE COUNTY&nbsp;–&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has identified the man shot yesterday in an officer involved shooting incident on I-35.

The subject has been identified as 40-year-old Dustin S. Schultz-Bergin, of Olathe, Kan. He remains hospitalized in critical condition. The investigation is ongoing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

CHASE COUNTY –&nbsp;The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer involved shooting that happened Thursday afternoon along I-35 in northern Chase County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KHP troopers from Troops N and ESU were attempting to locate a wanted suspect when they came into contact with him at the Matfield Green Service Area on I-35. The subject fled in a black Nissan Altima heading north. A pursuit ensued, and a trooper in a separate vehicle was able to deploy stop sticks ahead of the suspect’s car. This caused the car to become disabled near mile marker 107, according to a media release from the KBI.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 1:25 p.m., the armed suspect exited his vehicle and a confrontation occurred which led one of the two troopers on scene to fire shots. A K-9 was also utilized. The suspect sustained at least one gunshot wound and several puncture wounds from the K-9. No troopers were injured.

EMS responded to the scene, and the man was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. He is currently in critical condition.&nbsp;

The KBI will conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the shooting. Once completed the findings will be turned over to the Chase County Attorney for review.&nbsp;

CHASE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Chase County.

Just before 1:30p.m. Thursday, Kansas Highway Patrol troopers were involved in a vehicle pursuit on the Kansas Turnpike in Chase County, according to Trooper Chad&nbsp;Crittenden.

Officers used a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle north of Matfield Green. There was a confrontation with an armed suspect and he was shot.

EMS transported the man to a Wichita hospital. No officers were injured, according to Crittenden.&nbsp; The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation.
