DOUGLAS COUNTY —A crash in Lawrence ended with an arrest after two men who heard the noise chased after the fleeing driver.

The crash occurred just before 3p.m. Tuesday, on North 3rd St. near North Street, according to a social media report from Lawrence Police. A pickup truck skidded about 50 feet before slamming into the rear-end of a car.  

Police learned the driver of the truck got out and started to run but two witnesses ran after him and brought him back to the scene.  Responding officers found that the truck had been driving erratically prior to the crash.  

The man had several outstanding warrants and was in possession of a substance officers believe is cocaine.  Medics transported him to the hospital to be checked out and he was later booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility.

The people in the other car were not seriously injured, according to Lawrence Police.

It's the second time Woods has taken a leave following a car crash. In 2009, after his SUV plowed into a fire hydrant and tree outside his home near Orlando, he took a leave of absence to work on being a better person. That lasted four months and he returned at the Masters.

Woods’ eyes were bloodshot and glassy, his pupils dilated and he had opioid pills — identified as hydrocodone — on him when interviewed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-car-crash-florida-10be5faefb91c86ce5da36a3590e86a1">at the scene of the crash</a>, according to the arrest report released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Woods’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-golf-tiger-woods-dui-dcec962e03e2bae3c8940c104d2575c1">movements were slow and lethargic</a>, he was sweating as he talked to deputies in the back seat of an air-conditioned car and he told them he had taken prescription medication earlier in the morning, according to the report.

Woods told deputies he had been looking at his phone and fiddling with the radio moments before he hit the trailer, the report said.

Woods has not played an official event since the 2024 British Open. He was recovering from a seventh back surgery in October and was trying to return at the Masters, where he is a five-time champion.

“I'm committed to take the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” Woods said in his statement.

Woods will not be in Augusta, Georgia, where he was to appear with Masters chairman Fred Ridley to celebrate the opening of a refurbished municipal course that involved Woods, or for the prestigious Masters Club dinner for champions.

“Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament fully support Tiger Woods as he focuses on his well-being. Although Tiger will not be joining us in person next week, his presence will be felt here in Augusta,” Ridley said in a statement.

He is taking a break from the PGA Tour board

That means a break from more than just golf. He serves a key role on the PGA Tour board by leading its Future Competition Committee reshaping the schedule. A tour spokesman said Woods did not take part in Tuesday's meeting, and the work would continue in his absence.

“Over the last year, I have come to deeply appreciate Tiger not only for his impact on the game, but for his friendship and the perspective he has shared with me as I joined the golf industry,” said PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, who started last summer. “My thoughts are with him and his family as he takes this step, for which he has my full respect and support.”

Woods’ defense attorney, Douglas Duncan, didn’t respond to an email and phone call after the plea was entered Tuesday.

Woods was traveling at high speeds on a beachside, residential road on Jupiter Island with a 30 mph (nearly 50 kph) when the accident occurred. The truck had $5,000 in damage, according to the report.

The truck driver and another person helped Woods out of his vehicle through the passenger window. Neither Woods nor the truck driver were injured.

During a field sobriety test, deputies noticed Woods limping and that he had a compression sock over his right knee. Woods explained he had undergone seven back surgeries and over 20 surgeries on his right leg, and that his ankle seizes up while walking.

Woods, who was hiccupping during questioning, continuously moved his head during one of the sobriety tests and deputies had to tell him several times to keep his head straight, the report said.

“Based on my observations of Woods, how he performed the exercises and based on my training, knowledge, and experience, I believed that Woods normal faculties were impaired, and he was unable to safely operate the motor vehicle,” the deputy wrote after the tests.

Woods, 50, is the most influential figure in golf and has become as recognizable as any athlete in the world. The first person of Black heritage to win the Masters in 1997, he has captivated golf fans with records likely never to be broken.

But his injuries have kept him from accomplishing more, including those suffered in the 2021 car crash in Los Angeles that damaged his right leg so badly he said doctors considered amputation.

At this latest crash, Woods agreed to a Breathalyzer test that showed no signs of alcohol, but he refused a urine test, authorities said. He was arrested and released on bail eight hours later.

Woods, who has been&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-driving-80-mph-crash-suv-los-angeles-fc7405d255d84faa036614c566899086">involved in four crashes</a>&nbsp;over the years, is charged with driving under the influence with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

Junction City man jailed without bond for alleged crimal threat

TOPEKA — Transgender activist Samantha Boucher tried her best to get arrested Tuesday for using the second floor women’s bathroom in the Kansas Statehouse in defiance of a new state law that criminalizes bathroom use based on gender assigned at birth.

Boucher’s plans for civil disobedience turned into a statement about the confusion surrounding&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/sb244/" target="_blank">Senate Bill 244</a>&nbsp;and how it is to be enforced.

As she told Gov. Laura Kelly in a chance encounter in the rotunda, where the governor had just finished a news conference: “The way it is worded is quite difficult for enforcement, but we’re about to put that to the test.”

She thanked the governor for her veto of the legislation.

“I am very sorry that you and others have been put in this situation,” Kelly said.

Boucher shouted as she walked away from the governor: “And now, we will see if the attorney general chooses to enforce the law.”

Danedri Herbert, spokeswoman for Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, didn’t answer a phone call or respond to a text message seeking comment for this story.

Boucher is the founder and executive director of Trans Liberty, a national nonprofit that issued an evacuation order for the state after the bill became law. The group set up&nbsp;<a href="https://www.translifeboat.org/" target="_blank">Operation Lifeboat</a>&nbsp;to provide cash assistance for trans residents and help them flee.

She said she chose to come to Kansas for Trans Day of Visibility because “no single bill in American history has ever been as aggressive toward the trans community as SB 244.” In addition to restricting bathroom use, the bill retroactively invalidated the driver’s licenses of anyone who had changed their gender marker.

Boucher said the organization plans to help 2,000 Kansas families leave the state.

“We’re in this for the long haul,” Boucher said. “We’re going to make sure everybody who was affected by this, especially having their licenses taken away from them, is accounted for, and if they want to leave the state, we’ll help them do that. If they choose to stay, then we’ll do our best to help them do that more safely.”

A small group of trans people and their allies joined Boucher at the Statehouse. Only Boucher defied the law.

Connor Montgomery, of Manhattan, said it was important for trans people to be visible “because we are a very small minority of people who have injustices against us constantly, like with these new laws forcing trans women into men’s bathrooms, which is incredibly dangerous, and putting men like me in women’s restrooms.”

“I don’t think it’s a very kind thing for the lawmakers to go around us when making these types of decisions,” Montgomery added. “I feel like if they met some of us personally, that they might change their minds about how this affects us.”

The law says an individual may receive a warning on first violation for unlawful use of a bathroom in a government building, followed by a $1,000 fine for a second violation and a Class B misdemeanor for a third violation. Those violations would be triggered by a complaint and investigation. Governmental entities are required to investigate complaints about bathroom use or face a $125,000 fine.

Additionally, an individual who feels “aggrieved” by a trans person’s bathroom use can pursue a private right of action for $1,000, a provision of the law that critics describe as a “bounty.”

“It’s one thing to fear your government,” Boucher said. “It’s another thing to fear your neighbors. That is a clear and bold attempt to make trans people feel unsafe in the community at large, not just in a public building.”

Boucher talked to Capitol Police, a division of the Kansas Highway Patrol, as soon as she entered the building and let them know that she planned an unlawful use of a bathroom. Police informed her they weren’t responsible for enforcing the civil offenses described in the law, but that they would notify the Kansas Department of Administration, which has oversight of the building.

At her request, Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Grady Walker followed her to the bathroom, filmed her going in and out three times — she said she peed during her first trip — and interrogated her in private afterward. Walker told reporters he was treating it as a criminal investigation.

“We will not be able to discuss or disclose any information about this investigation until it’s concluded, but she is free to leave at this time,” Walker said.

Boucher praised Walker for his professionalism.

Samir Arif, a spokesman for the Kansas Department of Administration, said the agency as of 4 p.m. had not received any complaints regarding bathroom usage at the Statehouse. He declined to answer follow-up questions about how the law is enforced, including who would have standing to make a complaint and whether there was a deadline for doing so.

Trans Liberty leader defies Kansas law by using Statehouse bathroom, without complaint or arrest

SALINE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after several encounters with police.

Just before 9p.m. Monday, police responded to 1800 S. Broadway in Salina reference to Ericka Lashawn Barber calling 911 twice, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman. 

Barber refused to speak with officers when they attempted to contact her. Then between 9:45 PM and 10:58 PM, Barber called 911 approximately 67 times. 

Barber was advised not to call 911 if there was no emergency. At about 2:10a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to Barber’s apartment due to a visible fire within the room. Upon arrival Barber would not open the door for fire crews or officers. 

The door was breached and entry made. Barber had taken items from the room and set them on fire on a windowsill burning the screen. Barber would not comply with commands and resisted arrest. 

She was taken into custody and after being cleared by medical personnel, she was transported to the jail. There were 10 other subjects living in the complex where Barber set the fire. 

Barber was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of 10 counts of Aggravated Arson, Interference with Law Enforcement, and 67 counts of Transmit/Communicate false info to request emergency service.

 </figure>SALINE COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after several encounters with police.Just before 9p.m. Monday, police responded to 1800 S. Broadway in Salina reference to Ericka Lashawn Barber calling 911 twice, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman. Barber refused to speak with officers when they attempted to contact her. Then between 9:45 PM and 10:58 PM, Barber called 911 approximately 67 times. Barber was advised not to call 911 if there was no emergency. At about 2:10a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to Barber’s apartment due to a visible fire within the room. Upon arrival Barber would not open the door for fire crews or officers. The door was breached and entry made. Barber had taken items from the room and set them on fire on a windowsill burning the screen. Barber would not comply with commands and resisted arrest. She was taken into custody and after being cleared by medical personnel, she was transported to the jail. There were 10 other subjects living in the complex where Barber set the fire. Barber was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of 10 counts of Aggravated Arson, Interference with Law Enforcement, and 67 counts of Transmit/Communicate false info to request emergency service.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Tiger Woods’ eyes were bloodshot and glassy, his pupils dilated and he had hydrocodone pills in his pocket when interviewed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-car-crash-florida-10be5faefb91c86ce5da36a3590e86a1">at the scene of his car crash</a>&nbsp;last week in Florida, according to a sheriff’s office report released Tuesday.

Woods’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-golf-tiger-woods-dui-dcec962e03e2bae3c8940c104d2575c1">movements were slow and lethargic</a>, he was sweating as he talked to deputies and told them he had taken prescription medication earlier in the morning, according to the incident report released by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. Woods told deputies he had been looking at his phone and fiddling with the radio before he clipped a truck in front of him, the report said.

Deputies found two white pills, which were identified as the opioid hydrocodone used to treat pain, in his pocket, the report said.

When asked by a deputy if he took any prescription medications, Woods said, “I take a few.”

The golfer was traveling at high speeds on a beachside, residential road on Jupiter Island when his Land Rover clipped the truck and rolled onto its side, according to the sheriff's office, which noted Woods showed signs of impairment.

The truck had $5,000 in damage, according to the sheriff's report.

The truck driver and another person helped Woods out of his vehicle, with the golfer needing to climb out from the passenger side. Neither Woods nor the truck driver were injured.

During a field sobriety test, deputies noticed Woods limping and that he had a compression sock over his right knee. The golfer explained he had undergone seven back surgeries and over 20 leg operations and that his ankle seizes up while walking. Woods, who was hiccupping during the questioning, continuously moved his head during one of the sobriety tests and deputies had to instruct him several times to keep his head straight, the report said.

But his injuries kept him from accomplishing more, including those suffered in a 2021 car crash that damaged his right leg so badly he said doctors considered amputation.

Woods’ agent at Excel Sports, Mark Steinberg, has not responded to multiple messages seeking comment. No one from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/photo-gallery/tiger-woods-golf-46cea636624aaf144bd8983a48e7518d">Woods’ camp or the PGA Tour</a>&nbsp;-- he is on the board and is chairman of the committee&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-car-crash-ryder-cup-pga-tour-masters-c257fb253100d73cae7a42d65c50dd0e">reshaping the competition model</a>&nbsp;-- have commented since his arrest.

A felony charge of Aggravated Assault against former Junction City Commissioner Al (Alovence) Gordon has been dimissed without prejudice in Geary County District Court. The dismissal occured during a District Court session on Tuesday.

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. —&nbsp;The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office arrests a former Sedgwick County Department of Corrections employee on a charge of unlawful sexual relations with an inmate.

On Monday, deputies arrested Jonah Kriston Bundy, 29, of Goddard, and booked him into the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility, according to a media release from the sheriff's office.

In January 2026, the Sheriff’s Office received a report of an alleged inappropriate relationship and began an investigation. Detectives determined Bundy, who worked as a correctional officer at the Sedgwick County Adult Residential Facility, allegedly engaged in a relationship with a client in December 2025.

Bundy resigned his position with the Sedgwick County Department of Corrections before the investigation.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for charging consideration.

Former Kan. corrections officer accused of having sex with an inmate

Sheriff: Manhattan man caught transporting meth

ATCHISON COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a Kansas woman on multiple allegations

Just before 3p.m. Sunday, an officer on patrol in the city of Atchison had spotted 35-year-old Heather N. Abernathy of Atchison outside a residence and knew there to be a warrant for her arrest. Abernathy ran from the officer but after a short foot pursuit she was taken into custody and taken to the County Jail. 

Police had investigated an incident that had occurred shortly before on December 27, 2025 at a residence in the 800 block North 9th Street in Atchison.

 A 44-year-old female reported that during a disturbance at the residence she was struck in the head with a cordless drill by Abernathy. When officers arrived at the residence Abernathy had fled the area. EMS responded to the scene and treated the victim for her injuries but she was not transported for further treatment.

&nbsp;Abernathy was arrested on the District Court warrant for aggravated battery. Abernathy and also a requested charge of interference with law enforcement.

When officers arrived at the residence Abernathy had fled the area. EMS responded to the scene and treated the victim for her injuries but she was not transported for further treatment.&nbsp;Abernathy was arrested on the District Court warrant for aggravated battery. Abernathy and also a requested charge of interference with law enforcement.

His manager at Excel Sports, Mark Steinberg, did not respond to a request for comment on Woods' arrest.

As for golf, this comes at a bad time for the sport's most influential player.

Woods had said earlier he was trying to get in shape for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/the-masters">the Masters</a>&nbsp;on April 9-12, though that was looking unlikely. He turned 50 at the end of last year. “This body, it doesn't recover like it did when it was 24, 25,” Woods said last week.

He also was days away from a decision on whether to be the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 matches in Ireland. Two officials from the PGA of America did not immediately return phone calls from The Associated Press seeking comment.

And on April 5, he is scheduled to be in Augusta, Georgia, with Masters chairman Fred Ridley to celebrate&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/masters-tiger-woods-augusta-municipal-patch-ce620de9b22b968f414d843701201921">a project at “The Patch,”</a>&nbsp;the nickname of a municipal golf course where Woods' design team created a short course to go along with a major upgrade to the public course.

Woods also is the central figure as chairman of the Future Competition Committee that is reshaping the PGA Tour model of tournaments. Tour CEO Brian Rolapp predicted meaningful progress this summer.

The PGA Tour declined to comment on Woods' arrest.

Now everything is on hold while Woods sorts through his second arrest in the last nine years, and his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-car-crash-dui-e0cb3bc5ff0df5552b3a0f8368df7bc9">fourth car crash dating to 2009</a>.

Woods waited until the summer of 2024 before deciding against being Ryder Cup captain for the 2025 matches in New York.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-masters-ryder-cup-pga-tour-schedule-893a6553e34de7fdb5ef9f8bd030f5b5">The Associated Press reported in February</a>&nbsp;the PGA of America had a soft deadline of the end of March for him to decide this time.

The PGA of America already is under scrutiny because of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ryder-cup-rory-mcilroy-fans-behavior-86b5a189f6699a0734a77d27c9ebd8aa">the unruly fan behavior at Bethpage Park</a>&nbsp;last September, and this is not a time for another misstep. One person with knowledge of the process said the PGA of America has a backup plan of four potential candidates for the Ryder Cup committee to review if Woods declines — or if the PGA of America moves on.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods' Land Rover was going at a “high speed” when it clipped the trailer of a pressure cleaning truck and flipped on its side. Woods was not hurt and climbed out through the passenger window. The driver of the truck was not injured, either.

“Had there been somebody moving in the opposite direction, we would not be having a conversation saying there were no injuries,” Budensiek said. “This could’ve been a lot worse.”

Budensiek said investigators on the scene believe Woods had taken some kind of medication or drug. He described Woods as lethargic and said the golfer agreed to a breath test that showed “triple zeroes” — no sign of alcohol. By declining the urine test, the sheriff said, officials will never get “definitive results” about what caused the impairment.

That was consistent with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/e2ef6fcbbe2e49c9b65c30f50438d058">his 2017 arrest on a DUI charge in Florida</a>, when Woods was found asleep behind the wheel of a car with the engine running, the right blinker on, two flat tires and light damage to the driver's side.

Woods said it was a bad mix of medication.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/4131eb9622c247cea7cd6094d47a7019">Toxicology reports later revealed</a>&nbsp;the active ingredient for marijuana, two painkillers, a sleep drug and an anti-anxiety drug. There was no alcohol.

The pain medication has been standard fare for golf's most celebrated — and wounded — player.

After four knee surgeries — the last one a week after he won the U.S. Open with shredded knee ligaments and two stress fractures — Woods had four back surgeries in four years (2014 through 2017) only to return&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/f235067fe5ba4e0a98e76dd06008a6fe">to win the Masters in 2019</a>&nbsp;in one of golf's most astonishing comebacks.

And then came&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-car-crash-hospitalized-692f96b7b42ace4519b59919a9fd0035">the most serious crash of all, in February 2021</a>. His SUV was going 84 to 87 mph (135 to 140 kph) in an area with a speed limit of 45 mph (72 kph) when it veered off a coastal road in the Los Angeles suburbs, rolled down a hill and smacked into a tree.

He was not cited and Los Angeles authorities did not seek a warrant for blood samples. The injuries to his right leg and ankle were extensive — Woods later said amputation was considered — and it was remarkable he even returned to playing.

Woods has never been the same as a golfer since that accident. He has played 11 tournaments in the five years since that crash. Of the four times he finished 72 holes, he hasn't been closer than 16 shots of the winner. He shares the PGA Tour's all-time record with 82 wins.

But he remains a huge draw. Woods decided to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiger-woods-tgl-indoor-golf-jupiter-la-8f723107ff11945e109e7b90fd003266">compete Tuesday night in the finals of his indoor TGL league</a>, and viewership spiked to nearly 1 million, the second-highest rating behind Woods making his TGL debut.

He made his public debut at age 2 on “The Mike Douglas Show” and has been in the spotlight ever since, setting records that are likely never to be broken. He remains a central figure in golf to this day, and the scrutiny is as great as ever with so much on his plate.

Tiger Woods faces uncertain future off the golf course after DUI arrest 

KANSAS CITY —A Missouri man remains in custody on a $1.3 million bond following a brazen afternoon robbery at the Isle of Capri Casino, in Booneville, Missouri that netted over $1.2 million.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control announced the arrest of 21-year old&nbsp;Benjamin Michael-Dass Charles, an employee of the casino. Charles was charged Friday with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and tampering with physical evidence.

According to investigators, two masked individuals entered the casino at approximately 2:13 p.m. on March 25. The pair, clad in black and armed with a rifle and a handgun, bypassed the gaming floor and went directly to the bank area, where they seized approximately $1,276,000.

The escape was briefly interrupted when a casino patron tackled the suspect carrying the rifle. A physical struggle ensued before the second suspect struck the patron multiple times, allowing both men to flee the property.

State troopers assigned to the Patrol’s Gaming Division contacted Charles while he was on duty at the casino on March 26, the day after the robbery. Following an interview with DDCC investigators, Charles was taken into custody and transported to the Cooper County Jail.

Authorities have identified a second suspect as 20-year old&nbsp;Hollis C. Vanleer Jr., of Normal, Illinois. Vanleer is described as:

Vanleer’s current whereabouts are unknown. Police warned that he is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or local law enforcement immediately.

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured and another arrested following an accident that occurred just after 8:30p.m. Sunday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Sean S.&nbsp;Schuff, 39, Salina, was&nbsp;northbound on College Avenue turning left onto Spruce Street. The driver failed to yield the right of way to Salina Police Department 2024 Ford Explorer driven by Officer Mathew K.&nbsp;Pfannenstiel, 30, Salina. The SUV collided with the pickup.&nbsp;&nbsp;During the collision, a tire came off the pickup and struck a 2017 Ram 4 driven by Paradise K.&nbsp;Roberts, 30,&nbsp;Snellville, Georgia.

EMS transported Pfannenstiel to Salina Regional Medical Center. The other drivers were not injured. Police arrested Schuff and booked him into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of&nbsp;DUI;1st; incapable of safely driving;child present, according to online jail records.

All three drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.  Pfannenstiel joined the Salina police department in October 2025, according to the department's social media page.

Kan. officer hospitalized, driver arrested after 3-vehicle crash

KANSAS CITY– A Mexican national has pleaded guilty in federal court before U.S. District Judge Beth Phillips for role in a conspiracy to stage numerous armed robberies so that the purported victims of these crimes, who were illegal aliens in the United States, could use their status as crime victims to fraudulently obtain visas, according to the United State's Attorney.

Jose Luis Morales Salgado, 37, residing in Kansas City, Mo., a citizen of Mexico, was charged in a criminal complaint filed under seal in the U.S. District Court on Jan. 30, 2025. The criminal complaint, which was unsealed and made public following Salgado’s arrest and initial court appearance, charged Salgado with participating in a conspiracy to fraudulently obtain immigration visas.&nbsp; On Feb. 6, 2025, a federal grand jury indicted Salgado and co-defendant Oscar Gutierrez on the same charges.

On March 24, 2026, Salgado pleaded guilty to conspiring to fraudulently obtain immigration visas for aliens.&nbsp; Salgado admitted that immigrants contacted Salgado to arrange for themselves to become “victims” of staged robberies so they could submit applications for U-Visas, which are granted to crime victims. These immigrants, who were either illegally present in the United States or in the United States legally through work visas, paid Salgado thousands of dollars to participate. In exchange, Salgado directed them to the location of a planned staged robbery.&nbsp;Salgado also admitted that he recruited individuals to pose as robbers during the staged robberies and provided directions to those individuals.

Salgado admitted that each robbery involved aliens who later told police they had car trouble, pulled over and got out of their vehicle to diagnose the car trouble. Soon after stopping, another vehicle would arrive and park next to, or in front of, the purported victim’s vehicle. The “robber”, wearing a medical mask over his face and brandishing a firearm, would strike the purported victims in the head or face, take their cash and typically fire two rounds into the purported victim’s vehicle.

Investigators with the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department initially identified 11 incidents in which the reported robberies followed this pattern. These cases were linked to each other, based in part, on leads generated from the National Integrated Ballistics Information Network (NIBIN). NIBIN utilized ballistic imaging technology to compare cartridge case markings on the expended cartridges from each crime scene.&nbsp; Detectives determined there was likely one firearm used in the commission of all the robberies. Detectives gathered information from city cameras and license plate readers to identify the vehicles used in the robberies, the affidavit says, which led them to Gutierrez.

Salgado instructed the aliens to falsely report to law enforcement officials how the robberies occurred and advised them how to make these false reports to bolster their applications for U-Visas.

The Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act was designed to strengthen the ability of law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute certain crimes while also protecting victims of crimes who are willing to help law enforcement authorities in the investigation or prosecution of the criminal activity. A foreign national is eligible to receive a U-Visa if they were the victim of qualifying criminal activity, suffered substantial physical or mental abuse because of having been a victim of the criminal activity, possessed information about the criminal activity, and was likely to be helpful to law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of the crime.

According to court documents, a source told investigators the number of purported victims involved in the scheme was well over 100. Court documents also indicate that investigators identified 11 robberies involving 33 purported victims that occurred as part of the conspiracy between Dec. 29, 2021, and July 13, 2024.&nbsp; Of those 33 immigrants, 18 submitted U-Visa applications falsely claiming to be victims of violent crimes.

An undercover federal agent and a law enforcement source met with Salgado on Jan. 22, 2025, and recorded their meeting. The undercover agent planned to pay Salgado $4,000 for a robbery to be staged to fraudulently obtain a U-Visa. Salgado told the undercover agent he would “put on a grand show.” Once the plans were agreed upon, the undercover agent paid Salgado $500 with a promise to pay the balance later. The undercover agent met with Salgado again on Jan. 30, 2025, and Salgado was arrested.

Under federal statutes, Salgado&nbsp;is subject to a sentence of up to 5 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

A foreign national is eligible to receive a U-Visa if they were the victim of qualifying criminal activity, suffered substantial physical or mental abuse because of having been a victim of the criminal activity, possessed information about the criminal activity, and was likely to be helpful to law enforcement in the investigation or prosecution of the crime.According to court documents, a source told investigators the number of purported victims involved in the scheme was well over 100. Court documents also indicate that investigators identified 11 robberies involving 33 purported victims that occurred as part of the conspiracy between Dec. 29, 2021, and July 13, 2024.&nbsp; Of those 33 immigrants, 18 submitted U-Visa applications falsely claiming to be victims of violent crimes.An undercover federal agent and a law enforcement source met with Salgado on Jan. 22, 2025, and recorded their meeting. The undercover agent planned to pay Salgado $4,000 for a robbery to be staged to fraudulently obtain a U-Visa. Salgado told the undercover agent he would “put on a grand show.” Once the plans were agreed upon, the undercover agent paid Salgado $500 with a promise to pay the balance later. The undercover agent met with Salgado again on Jan. 30, 2025, and Salgado was arrested.Under federal statutes, Salgado&nbsp;is subject to a sentence of up to 5 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

Mexican national admits staging crimes in KC to fraudulently obtain visas 

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas man charged in a crash&nbsp;a crash that killed a motorcyclist in 2025 was back in court this week.

Brian Adrian, 61, Wichita, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of vehicular homicide and a felony count of aggravated battery while driving under the influence, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office.

He was originally charged with felony involuntary manslaughter.&nbsp;

Just after 7p.m. October 17,&nbsp; police responded to a crash involving a sedan and a motorcycle at West 42nd Street South and South Seneca in Wichita, according to a media release. First responders located a motorcyclist identified as 27-year-old Bryce Rowland, who was pronounced deceased at the scene

Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of a sedan, identified as Adrian, was traveling north on Seneca and attempting to make a left turn onto 42nd Street. The motorcyclist was traveling south on Seneca when the sedan turned and struck him.

The Wichita Police Critical Accident Follow up Team was activated and AFU Detectives responded to the scene. Police arrested Adrian. He has been in jail on a $200,000 bond since his arrest.&nbsp;
