The Junction City Lady Jays had a tough night at Emporia High School Friday night as the Spartans defeated Junction City 39 to 7. The Lady Jays were shutout at halftime, trailing 27 to 0.  Sophomore Naveah Rushing hit a 3-pointer in the 4th quarter, sophomore Breya Allen knocked down 2 free throws, and senior Sarah Rexrode scored with minimal time left in the game. With the big win, Emporia secured the Centennial League championship.&nbsp; Junction city falls to 1 - 18 on the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Junction City Blue Jays go into Emporia and take care of business with another 15 point win, final score 56 to 41.&nbsp; Junction City lead from start to finish including a 16-point halftime lead, 29 to 13.&nbsp; Despite many efforts, and cutting the lead to 10 in the 3rd quarter, Emporia could not hold off the Blue Jays, lead in scoring by Larkin Turner with 21 points.&nbsp; Sophomore Lovell Autry scored 12 points and spent most of the night in foul trouble.&nbsp; With the win, the Blue Jays clinch at least a share of the Centennial League title.&nbsp; With a win Tuesday night over Topeka High, the Junction City can win their first outright Centennial League championship.&nbsp; The Blue Jays advance to 17 - 2 on the season with Senior Night next Tuesday at Junction City High School.

Consideration of membership in the Flint Hills Regional Council will be on the Junction City Commission agenda Tuesday night. The governing body meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 701 North Jefferson.

On Feb. 6 the governing body heard from multiple area residents asking them to reconsider keeping the City as a member of the Council.

Commissioner Al Gordon said he wanted the membership reconsidered and Commissioner Ronna Larson also said she wanted the issue back on the agenda.

On Jan. 3rd the city commission let die for lack of a second a motion renewing the annual membership to the Council. The City had not budgeted for membership this year.

Flint Hills Regional Council will return to the city agenda

&nbsp; The Geary County Sheriff's Office has received notice from another Kansas Law Enforcement Agency involving offenders who must register through the Kansas Offender Registration Act. 

An offender in another Kansas jurisdiction reported being called by an individual about missing an appointment for a DNA swab and a warrant had been issued. The person claimed to be an officer with the agency and told the offender if he didn't pay $3,000 he would be arrested. The offender told the man he could only pay $2,000 and the man agreed. The offender became suspicious and told the man he was going to contact a local law enforcement agency.

Later the same day a second attempt was made by someone using the same phone number. Again, please take notice, a Law Enforcement Officer will never attempt to collect money from you for a warrant.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The driver lost control due to icy conditions. The pickup entered the west ditch and overturned. EMS transported Linn to Stormont Vail. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Junction City woman hospitalized after rollover accident

SALINE COUNTY— One person was injured in an accident just after 9:30a.m. Friday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Marilyn A.&nbsp;&nbsp;Canole, 61, Abilene, was westbound on Interstate 70 at Ohio Street making a lane change. 

Due to winter weather road conditions, Canole lost control of the Hyundai. The SUV spun out and struck a 2021 International semi driven by&nbsp; Gary A. Garrow, 54, Lenexa.

EMS transported&nbsp;Canole to Heartland Health Care Clinic. Garrow was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2010 Chevy G1500 driven by Samuel G. Wright, 68, Kansas City, Kansas, was eastbound on Interstate 70 just east of Carlson Road.

The Geary County Historical Society will be celebrating President’s Day during STEAM Saturday this weekend. &nbsp;Participants will be able to test their WWII aircraft knowledge like President Eisenhower, engineer their own presidential monuments and meet “Mamie Eisenhower,” who will be giving special presentations about what it was like to be the First Lady at 1:30pm and 2:30pm.&nbsp;

STEAM Saturday will be held Saturday, February 17th&nbsp;from 1:00pm-3:30pm and is a free program open to the public of all ages.

Garry Berges, Geary County Rural Fire Chief, said before burning call his office at 785-238-1290 to get approval. There could have to be delays if the&nbsp; winds are or are predicted to be 20 mph or more, and depending on the humidity level.

You must stay with a fire to maintain and monitor it.

Burning can be done any time of the year but the primary time for grassland burning has typically been mid-March through the month of April. Brush piles cannot be burned in April.

Berges indicated that there may be many fires this year but they won't be as severe as last year due to moisture received this winter.

The program will qualify for certified crop advisor (CCA) continuing credit units (CEUs).

“We cannot change the impact of weather on each year’s crop, but we can arm wheat producers with the knowledge they need to maximize profitability through utilizing the genetic potential of new varieties and best management practices,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “We’re excited to share with Kansas wheat producers what we’ve learned through the Kansas Wheat Commission’s research investments — from the importance of variety selection to the practices and tools farmers can use to improve quality.”

Wheat Scoop: Get your prescription for next year’s wheat crop

Discussion about the possibility of raising the Transient Guest Tax in Geary County has been receiving attention this week. As of now there are not any formal proposals and no final action.

The Transient Guest Tax is paid by people using lodging facilities. The current rate in the county totals 6%.

According to Convention &amp; Visitors Bureau Director Donna Price, a one cent increase was initially discussed at the county commission meeting with the funds to be used to support upgrades to facilities hosting sporting events. Possible examples could include soccer fields or tennis courts. Price suggested splitting that one percent in half to fund both facility upgrades and the CVB.&nbsp;

The matter was then taken to the CVB Advisory Committee, who suggested an overall two percent increase. Half of the money, or one percent, would be used to improve the sports facilities and half for the CVB.

The issue will now go back to the county commission for discussion.
