Junction City, Kansas: The 49th Annual Freedom Run Committee is pleased to announce the 2025 Freedom Runners: Junction City High School and Chapman High School State Cross Country teams. This honor is given to local runners who stand for community spirit, value our nation's freedom, and have demonstrated success in the Freedom Run over its 49-year history.

The 2025 Freedom Run aims to highlight our community's youth through the involvement of youth runners, race route volunteers, youth-based water stops, and finish line workers. In keeping with this vision, we have chosen to award the 2025 Freedom Runner honor to two area youth running programs that exemplify excellence, dedication, and community spirit. 

Both Junction City High School and Chapman High School's Cross Country teams distinguished themselves by qualifying several members and placing at the state cross country championships last fall. These achievements represent countless hours of training, unwavering commitment, and the kind of perseverance that embodies the Freedom Run spirit. 

Many of these student-athletes have participated in the Freedom Run in previous years and represent the perfect "spirit" we celebrate today within our shared communities. These young men and women serve as excellent role models, demonstrating the hard work and resiliency it takes to reach the top of their sport.

Freedom Run Celebrates Youth Excellence with Dual 2025 Freedom Runner Recognition

The Riley County Police Department Life Saving Award was presented to Officer Brandon Gadia for his exceptional performance and life-saving actions on January 16, 2025. 

Officer Gadia responded to a welfare check concerning an individual who had not returned home and was not answering telephone calls. He collected a variety of information and issued a local alert for a welfare contact. When the reporting party later provided additional concerning details, to include missing medication and luggage, Officer Gadia pursued further leads and contacted the individual’s employer and ex-spouse. 

Through his diligent follow-up, Officer Gadia learned the individual had recently voiced intent to end their life. Officer Gadia coordinated with the agency resources that lead to a potential location near Hays, Kansas. 

Working with RCPD dispatch, he used this information to identify a motel where the individual was confirmed as a guest. Officer Gadia then coordinated with the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, who located the individual in medical distress. Thanks to Officer Gadia’s persistence, coordination, and investigative skills, the individual received life-saving medical treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. 

For his dedication, compassion, and commitment to preserving life, we express our extreme gratitude to Officer Branden Gadia.

Harvest is progressing steadily across parts of Kansas, with yields generally around average despite challenges like strong winds, scattered rain and wheat streak mosaic virus. Weather and market conditions remain obstacles. Growers are staying optimistic and focused on finishing the season successfully.

Jess Schwieterman, who farms with his wife Laryce in Hamilton County near Syracuse, reports that this year’s harvest has been going well, despite strong winds and a few rain showers. They received a good November rain, but no winter moisture and a dry March and April until it started raining the week after Easter. The grain fill conditions were excellent, and yields have been right around average, similar to last year. Test weights have held up around 60 to 61 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

High winds brought in a spring infection of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, turning the fields yellow. Schwieterman mentioned several varieties that have proven to have good resistance - KS Territory, KS Bill Snyder and KS Dallas. Their harvest began on June 20 and is nearly halfway finished. However, others in the area are just getting started. They have been pleased with yields, noting that the longer the fields are in no-till, the better they yield. They also manage for higher yields and have a strong fertility program. The biggest challenge this year has been the depressed wheat prices.

Kris Allen, general manager of Randall Farmers Coop in Jewell County, reports that harvest has been moving steadily across their two locations. Since taking in their first load on June 16, they’ve brought in around 700,000 bushels. Yields are ranging from 45 to 60 bushels per acre, and protein levels are holding solid at 12.6. Depending on the area, fields are about halfway to two-thirds cut, with combines rolling steadily. While this year isn’t quite as massive as last year’s crop, fueled by failed acres the season before, it’s still shaping up to be a strong and successful year.&nbsp;

Over halfway done with harvest, Brian Sieker, a farmer in Rice county, is facing the challenges of a wet season head-on, and staying optimistic.

“Mud is a challenge, but we’re grateful for it,” Sieker said. “Moisture is a welcome sight for our crop.”

On average, fields have produced 40-70 bushels per acre. Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) has taken a toll on both yield and test weight this year, prompting a change in how he’ll select varieties going forward.

“In the future, I will be taking varieties for WSMV; I haven’t in the past,” Sieker said. “We have to protect our neighbors because the investment is huge and margins are thin.”

With winter in mind, Sieker said he’s glad to have residue left in the fields. “It’s nice to have the stubble. It will hold us through the winter.”

Above all, he encourages others to check in with each other and find joy in the season.

“Check on your neighbors," he said. "Enjoy the process. Harvest is a fun but stressful time.”

The Junction City High School boys basketball program is hosting its summer youth basketball camp July 7-10. The camp runs 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Blue Jay Event Center.&nbsp; It is open to third through six grade boys.&nbsp;

USD 475 will offer meals

The Geary County Sheriff's Office said all three suspects are now in custody. Thursday morning, June 26 at approximately 9:14 AM, the Geary County Sheriff's Office received multiple 911 calls reporting an individual walking along Interstate 70. Deputies responded and made contact with the individual, who was identified as Desmond Gragston Jacharien, of Kentucky - one of the outstanding suspects from Thursday night's manhunt. He was taken into custody without incident.

Later in the day, at approximately 11:47 AM, additional 911 calls were received regarding an individual walking along McDowell Creek Road. Deputies with the Geary County Sheriff's Office responded and identified the individual as Derrick K. Givens, also from Kentucky - the third and final suspect involved in the foot pursuit and manhunt from the night prior. Givens was taken into custody without incident.

All three suspects involved in the vehicle pursuit and subsequent manhunt are now in custody. The individuals are currently being held at the Geary County Detention Facility, awaiting their first court appearance

On the evening of June 25, 2025, at approximately 11:24 PM, a detective with the Junction City Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate 70. The vehicle failed to stop and fled, prompting a pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

The vehicle was pursued by the Junction City Police Department, Geary County Sheriff's Office, Riley County Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Morris County Sheriff's Office, and the Kansas Highway Patrol. The pursuit continued until the suspect vehicle became disabled near McDowell Creek Road. At that time, three individuals fled from the vehicle on foot, initiating a large-scale manhunt. 

An Everbridge alert was sent to residents in the area, advising them of the potentially dangerous individuals and urging them to take necessary precautions. Law enforcement personnel from all previously mentioned agencies immediately began a coordinated search of the area. The Kansas Highway Patrol’s air unit also provided critical aerial support during the manhunt. 

After an extensive search, the primary suspect—identified as Robeon Demetrius Downs, of Kentucky - was located and taken into custody. At that time, the search was called off. 

A search of the suspect vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 84 pounds of marijuana and over $18,000 in U.S. currency. 

While it is believed that the other individuals who fled the scene are no longer in the immediate area, residents in the McDowell Creek area are encouraged to remain vigilant. If you observe any suspicious individuals or behavior, please contact 911 immediately. Remember: If you see something, say something. 

The Junction City Police Department extends its appreciation to the Geary County Sheriff's Office, Riley County Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Morris County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, and all personnel involved for their professionalism, dedication, and teamwork. Their combined efforts were instrumental in safely resolving this incident and ensuring the safety of our community. 

This remains an active investigation. No further information will be released at this time.

Early Thursday morning just before 12:30 a.m. Geary County Sheriff's authorities said that they were searching for three black men who fled from their vehicle following a high speed chase along I-70 and Lower McDowell Creek. Residents in that area were advised to secure their homes and call 9-1-1 if the suspects were encountered.

At 8:53 a.m. Thursday law enforcement confirmed the primary suspect had been arrested and the others were last seen on foot in the area of McDowell Creek and I-70. Authorities have ceased operations trying to locate the other two due to the thick terrain and the fact that the primary target has been apprehended.

Law enforcement does not believe anyone is in danger at this time. Notify and report anything or anyone suspicous by calling 9-1-1.

The pursuit continued until the suspect vehicle became disabled near McDowell Creek Road. At that time, three individuals fled from the vehicle on foot, initiating a large-scale manhunt. An Everbridge alert was sent to residents in the area, advising them of the potentially dangerous individuals and urging them to take necessary precautions. Law enforcement personnel from all previously mentioned agencies immediately began a coordinated search of the area. The Kansas Highway Patrol’s air unit also provided critical aerial support during the manhunt. After an extensive search, the primary suspect—identified as Robeon Demetrius Downs, of Kentucky - was located and taken into custody. At that time, the search was called off. A search of the suspect vehicle resulted in the discovery of approximately 84 pounds of marijuana and over $18,000 in U.S. currency. While it is believed that the other individuals who fled the scene are no longer in the immediate area, residents in the McDowell Creek area are encouraged to remain vigilant. If you observe any suspicious individuals or behavior, please contact 911 immediately. Remember: If you see something, say something. The Junction City Police Department extends its appreciation to the Geary County Sheriff's Office, Riley County Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Morris County Sheriff's Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, and all personnel involved for their professionalism, dedication, and teamwork. Their combined efforts were instrumental in safely resolving this incident and ensuring the safety of our community. This remains an active investigation. No further information will be released at this time.--Early Thursday morning just before 12:30 a.m. Geary County Sheriff's authorities said that they were searching for three black men who fled from their vehicle following a high speed chase along I-70 and Lower McDowell Creek. Residents in that area were advised to secure their homes and call 9-1-1 if the suspects were encountered.At 8:53 a.m. Thursday law enforcement confirmed the primary suspect had been arrested and the others were last seen on foot in the area of McDowell Creek and I-70. Authorities have ceased operations trying to locate the other two due to the thick terrain and the fact that the primary target has been apprehended.Law enforcement does not believe anyone is in danger at this time. Notify and report anything or anyone suspicous by calling 9-1-1.

One of the cornerstone events of Victory Week is the Commanders vs. Command Sergeants Major softball game. JUNCTION CITY, Kan.— This summer, the sounds of laughter, music, and discovery will fill the halls of Junction City First United Methodist Church as children from across the community gather for Wonder Junction Vacation Bible School, held Monday through Friday, July 14–18, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

This year's theme, Wonder Junction, invites children to imagine life as a grand journey powered by God's love. With daily stops at Bible storytelling stations, creative craft corners, upbeat worship rallies, science experiments, games, and engaging mission moments, kids will explore how God moves with us through every season of life—just like a journey on a railway of wonder and hope.

Fort Riley's Summer Concert Series wraps up this Friday, as country duo Maddie + Tae will headline the concert at the Artillery Parade Field on Fort Riley. 

Field gates for the show open at 5:00 p.m. with the 1st Infantry Division Band to take the stage at 7:00. Haley Mae Campbell will then perform at 7:45 before headliners Maddie + Tae perform at 9:00 p.m.

Some of Maddie + Tae's biggest hits are country songs Fly, Friends Don't, Girl in a Country Song, and Die from a Broken Heart.

Following the concert, a fireworks show will take place. 

Admission to the concert is free. It is recommended to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to sit on. 

There will be inflatables, family activities, and static displays. Food and beverages will be available for purchase onsite.

No pets, outside food, or alcohol is allowed.

All visitors without a federal ID must obtain a pass. Get your pass early online or by visiting the Visitor Control Center at Henry Gate, located off I-70.

MANHATTAN — While fireworks and festivities are staples of Independence Day, the holiday often brings anxiety and risk for pets. Loud noises, bright flashes, unfamiliar guests and tempting table scraps can all pose threats to their health and safety.

Kansas State University veterinarian Susan Nelson encourages pet owners to start preparing early, especially if their pet has shown fear around fireworks in the past."One of the most important things is to keep your pet inside during the days fireworks are allowed, as it is this time of year that sees the highest numbers of lost pets," said Nelson, clinical professor at K-State's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Veterinary Health Center</a>. "The noises and flashes are very frightening for many pets and can cause them to flee in an attempt to get away from the commotion."If your pet must go outside, always use a leash. Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with ID tags, and consider microchipping if it's not already done, as it will provide backup if your pet's collar is lost.

 Keeping contact information up to date is critical in case your pet gets lost.Nelson advises creating a calm, secure environment indoors to help reduce pet stress. For many pets, a familiar crate or closed-off room offers a comforting retreat."A crate or quiet room with the blinds drawn can make a big difference for dogs that feel overwhelmed," Nelson said. "Giving them a familiar, enclosed space helps them feel safe when the noise outside gets intense.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Keeping pets indoors also reduces their risk of physical harm. Fireworks, whether lit or leftover, can injure or poison animals. In neighborhoods where fireworks are frequently used, relocating pets to a quieter home or boarding facility may be the safest choice.

Additional measures can also be helpful, depending on your pet's needs. Over-the-counter calming aids are an option for some animals.

"Some pets respond well to calming supplements, especially if their anxiety is mild to moderate," Nelson said. "Just remember, many of these need to be started several days in advance to be effective, so don't wait until the fireworks begin."

Other strategies include soothing background noise — such as a television, radio or white noise machine — or offering a distraction like a food puzzle or stuffed food toy. Anxiety wraps may help some pets and can be used alone or in combination with medication.

For pets with a history of severe noise phobia, it's important to consult your veterinarian early.

"There's no one-size-fits-all solution," Nelson said. "For some pets, an anxiety wrap is enough. But others with more serious phobias may need prescription medications, and for those, you need to plan ahead of time with your veterinarian."

Beyond anxiety, Nelson warns there are many holiday hazards that involve food, drinks and common party items.

Loud noises, bright flashes, unfamiliar guests and tempting table scraps can all pose threats to their health and safety.Kansas State University veterinarian Susan Nelson encourages pet owners to start preparing early, especially if their pet has shown fear around fireworks in the past."One of the most important things is to keep your pet inside during the days fireworks are allowed, as it is this time of year that sees the highest numbers of lost pets," said Nelson, clinical professor at K-State's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Veterinary Health Center</a>. "The noises and flashes are very frightening for many pets and can cause them to flee in an attempt to get away from the commotion."If your pet must go outside, always use a leash. Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with ID tags, and consider microchipping if it's not already done, as it will provide backup if your pet's collar is lost. Keeping contact information up to date is critical in case your pet gets lost.Nelson advises creating a calm, secure environment indoors to help reduce pet stress. For many pets, a familiar crate or closed-off room offers a comforting retreat."A crate or quiet room with the blinds drawn can make a big difference for dogs that feel overwhelmed," Nelson said. "Giving them a familiar, enclosed space helps them feel safe when the noise outside gets intense.&nbsp;&nbsp;Keeping pets indoors also reduces their risk of physical harm. Fireworks, whether lit or leftover, can injure or poison animals. In neighborhoods where fireworks are frequently used, relocating pets to a quieter home or boarding facility may be the safest choice.Additional measures can also be helpful, depending on your pet's needs. Over-the-counter calming aids are an option for some animals."Some pets respond well to calming supplements, especially if their anxiety is mild to moderate," Nelson said. "Just remember, many of these need to be started several days in advance to be effective, so don't wait until the fireworks begin."Other strategies include soothing background noise — such as a television, radio or white noise machine — or offering a distraction like a food puzzle or stuffed food toy. Anxiety wraps may help some pets and can be used alone or in combination with medication.For pets with a history of severe noise phobia, it's important to consult your veterinarian early."There's no one-size-fits-all solution," Nelson said. "For some pets, an anxiety wrap is enough. Keep pets safe this Fourth of July with tips from K-State veterinarian

Amber Stanley is the current Junction City YMCA Director and has worked with tha entity for 19 years.&nbsp; She shared that there are activities&nbsp;for people ages three years to adult.&nbsp; 

The Supper Program provides meals for 18 years and under to eat during the school year.&nbsp; During the summer meals may be taken out of the building.&nbsp; Last year 53,000 meals were served to youth.&nbsp; The program runs Monday through Friday with bagged lunches available on Saturday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Construction has been going on at the Y for a new basketball court,&nbsp;locker rooms and work on the pool.&nbsp;There are also a variety of physical activities&nbsp;for youth after school during the school year, which are held at Franklin Elementary School.&nbsp; Transportation&nbsp;is available.&nbsp;

Volunteers are always needed to help. Information about donations during the Summer Program include unscented shaving cream, paper plates, plastic&nbsp;cutler, watercolor paints, popsicle sticks, googly&nbsp;eyes, tissue paper, finger paints, kid paint brushes, food coloring and paint tape.&nbsp;

Harvest is underway across the state, with progress varying by region. Yields are showing improvement in some areas, while scattered showers and heavy rains have slowed harvest in others. Test weights remain steady overall, though some growers continue to face challenges from wheat streak mosaic virus.

Harvest is in full swing for producers in Russell County, where yields are proving to be a bright spot in the 2025 Kansas wheat harvest. Jayce Dickerson reported their first load went to the elevator on June 18, and as of June 24, they were about halfway through harvest.&nbsp;

“We’re averaging around 60 bushels per acre,” Dickerson said. “We’re doing really good.” That’s a solid rebound compared to previous seasons—especially three years ago, when the family didn’t cut any wheat at all. “Two years ago, we cut some; last year, we cut most; and this year, we’re cutting it all because it’s actually really good.”

In Wilson County, farmer Randy Small began harvesting around June 12, with a short pause before getting back into the fields on June 19. Now nearing the finish line, he expects to wrap up within the next couple of days if everything goes to plan. Test weights have been averaging around 57 to 58. While the recent moisture could have caused delays, Randy says conditions have remained favorable overall. He planted three different wheat varieties this season and reports that all have performed consistently across the board.

Harvest is underway in Bazine, where CGS General Manager Brad Cowan reported they took in their first load on June 18. He says the elevator has received around 235,000 bushels, and harvest is about 20 to 25 percent complete. Yields are averaging near 50 bushels per acre, though it’s still early to get a full picture. Protein levels are running lower than usual, currently averaging 11.12, with a wide range from 9 to 14. While harvest began about five days earlier than it did last year, challenges remain. Wheat streak mosaic virus is showing up in isolated pockets and hitting those fields hard, and heavy rainfall from about 10 days ago is still causing problems in certain areas.

The JCPD said on June 16, the Junction City Police Department, with assistance from the Geary County Sheriff’s Office and Riley County Police Department, executed multiple Geary County District Court arrest warrants. These warrants followed a comprehensive, year-long investigation into the distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl within Junction City and Manhattan, Kansas.

Authorities arrest 28 people in drug related investigation

TOPEKA –&nbsp;&nbsp;Despite the hot temperatures,&nbsp;passionate crowds joined Kansas House Democrats in Abilene and Hutchinson on June 20 &amp; 21st&nbsp; for the fourth and fifth legs of the Fight Back Tour.

 County parties were in attendance along with former State Representative Jason Probst who was featured as the guest speaker and moderator in Hutchinson.&nbsp;

“Kansans are excited to hear from us and to be able to share their thoughts and concerns with state legislators. It’s more critical now than ever to visit the areas specifically where do we not currently hold seats and speak to those communities.”&nbsp;&nbsp;said House Democratic Leader Brandon Woodard.&nbsp;

There are six more stops currently planned, with several more to be added later in the summer and early fall.&nbsp;

Kansans join House Democrats’ Fight Back Tour in Abilene

The 250th anniversary of the United States Army was a topic for General ( R ) Carter Ham at Fort Riley on Tuesday. He delivered the keynote remarks at the Victory Week luncheon on Post.

Ham told a Military Affairs Council - Military Relations Committee audience that the Continental Army began on June 14, 1775. The Continental Army was manned by volunteers whose spirit carries over until today.

Ham once served as a commanding general for Fort Riley and today is the president and CEO of the Association of the United States Army.

Ham told the audience that the 1st Infantry Division headquartered at Fort Riley will continue to need their support. He described it as the Warrior Division, noting it was the most ready and trained division in the U.S. Army. He also added that future generations of Big Red One soldiers will also be called to provide support.
