WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminds taxpayers in Kansas that they can file their taxes quickly, easily and for free directly with the agency using IRS Direct File.

The web-based service, available in English and Spanish, offers guided help for preparing and filing a federal tax return from a smartphone, tablet or computer.

Direct File does not replace existing filing options like tax professionals, IRS Free File, free return preparation sites, commercial software or authorized e-file providers.

IRS customer service representatives staffing the Direct File support function can provide technical support and provide basic clarification of tax law related to the scope of Direct File. Questions related to issues other than Direct File will be routed to other IRS customer support, as appropriate.

Although the deadline to file a 2024 tax return and pay any tax owed is April 15, 2025, Direct File will be open until Oct. 15, 2025, for people who may need additional time to file.

Enhancements for the 2025 filing season

For the 2025 filing season, Direct File includes new features that make filing taxes quicker and easier.

· Import W-2 wages and other tax information directly from the IRS with step-by-step guidance

· Chat bot helps guide taxpayers through the eligibility checker

· Live chat feature is available in English and Spanish

· Opt-in option allows authenticated and verified taxpayers to access additional customer support or

· Request a callback from an IRS Direct File customer support representative.

Income. IRS Direct File is available for taxpayers who lived and worked in Kansas for all of 2024, file simple federal tax returns and report the following types of income: · W-2 wage income · SSA-1099 Social Security income · 1099-G unemployment compensation · 1099-INT interest income · 1099-R retirement income

Direct File is not available to taxpayers with other types of income, such as gig economy, rental or business income, or for taxpayers that itemize deductions. Taxpayers can check their eligibility and see if Direct File is a good fit. For those not eligible, they have alternative filing options.

Credits. IRS Direct File will automatically identify and apply the following tax credits for eligible taxpayers: · Earned Income Tax Credit · Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Dependents · Child and Dependent Care Credit · Premium Tax Credit · Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled · Retirement Savings Contributions Credit

In addition to covering taxpayers claiming the standard deduction and deductions for student loan interest and educator expenses, Direct File supports taxpayers claiming deductions for Health Savings Account contributions.

Direct File won’t prepare Kansas state tax returns. Once taxpayers have completed their federal tax return, Direct File automatically guides them to Kansas services to complete their state taxes. Visit the state websites to find information about income tax filing in each state.

Free filing options for all taxpayers

On Friday morning, there is a low chance for a mix of light sleet, snow, and freezing rain, especially north of Interstate 70. A light glaze of ice is possible. 

The next system comes late Friday night in the form of light rain, switching to a rain/snow mix and all snow by Saturday afternoon as a strong cold front sweeps through. Temperatures initially in the 30s quickly fall to the teens and 20s by the afternoon. Total snow accumulations are less than an inch.

JC Pregnancy Center staff have begun training in order to resume obstetric ultrasound service for area women and couples needing pregnancy decision information and support. By March the center will be able to provide limited diagnostic sonograms for women in this part of Kansas. &nbsp;The center will also continue providing medical-grade pregnancy tests, material assistance with baby items, adoption support, post-abortion support, and community referrals.

JC Pregnancy Center is located on the corner of 9th &amp; Washington Streets in downtown Junction City. &nbsp; It's a 501(c)(3) charity supported by local churches and individuals across Geary, Dickinson, Clay, Morris, and Riley counties. &nbsp; 

The center began in 2016 following two decades of work of local Birthright and Birthline volunteers, and visits from Salina's Pregnancy Service Center mobile ultrasound unit.As a medical pregnancy resource center ministry, it partners with local people to affirm life, promote spiritual healing and growth, inspire purity and integrity, and collaborate to support informed healthy living for local women and men facing pregnancy and lifestyle decisions.

Staff and volunteers have doubled in number this past year. &nbsp;Meanwhile local donors have also provided the extra funds for ultrasound training. &nbsp;The center plans to also begin a Fatherhood support program this spring.

GEARY COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 6a.m. Wednesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2023 Lexus ES driven by Lisa M.&nbsp;Good, 46, Salina, was eastbound on Interstate 70 near just east of the U.S. 77 exit.

 The driver lost control of the car due to a truck passing her and causing the car to move further to the right. The Lexus then traveled into the south ditch, went into a spin and struck a delineator post.

EMS transported Good to Stormont Vail. She was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Junction City Public Works Director Ray Ibarra said Wednesday morning that the city's public works are running five trucks, one each for police and fire departments plus in residential areas three contractors have been hired to help remove snow....one in the central part of town, one in the northern sector and another in the Spring Valley srea.

No major problems are being reported by city or county snow removal personnel.

Geary County Public Works Director Jeremie Myers noted that the county has five trucks running and motor graders are working on gravel roads.

Tointon Dean of Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.hhs.k-state.edu/">College of Health and Human Sciences</a>, effective Feb. 16."Over the past two years as interim dean, Dr. Behnke has led the college through transformative change and collaborative efforts to develop the college's strategic plan,” said Jesse Perez Mendez, provost and executive vice president. " As a K-State alumnus, researcher, esteemed professor and proven leader with a passion for excellence, he is well positioned to elevate the college as a next-generation hub for health and human sciences education, research and outreach."

RILEY COUNTY —Two people were injured in an accident just after&nbsp; noon Tuesday in Riley County.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, Courtney Downs of Manhattan failed to yield the right of way at the traffic light at the corner of Southwind Road and S. Seth Child Road in Manhattan.

Down's vehicle struck a vehicle driven by Dauane Briggs of Salina. EMS transported Downs and a passenger from Briggs' vehicle to Via Christi&nbsp; for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. The Riley County Police Department released no additional details.

2 injured after 2-vehicle crash in Manhattan

Junction City and Emporia entered the game on Tuesday night looking for their first win in Centennial League play. 

The Lady Spartans jumped out to an early lead and led 13-7 after one. Emporia expanded their lead to double-digits before halftime, but the Lady Jays cut it to nine points at the half trailing 22-13. 

In the second half, the Lady Spartans pulled away, leading by 20 points at the end of the third quarter, and then grew the lead in the fourth quarter, winning 49-21. 

Junior Morgan Nabus led the way for the JC girls with seven points, and Freshman Laniya Warmack had a career-high six points in the game. 

With the loss, the Lady Jays fall to 1-14, and 0-5 in Centennial League play. 

The Junction City Blue Jays entered Tuesday's matchup with Emporia on a three-game losing streak, and having lost five of their last six games. 

The first quarter was up-tempo, and the Emporia Spartans led by one, 14-13, going into the second quarter. 

Shots began falling for JC, with back-to-back threes from Isiah Handy and Jeremias Cruz. The Blue Jays outscored Emporia 21-13 in the second quarter, and JC led at the half 34-27. 

The third quarter was a defensive battle, with not a lot of scoring, and Junction City still led by seven after three quarters, 45-38.

The fourth quarter is when the excitement began, as it looked like the Blue Jays had a chance to put the game away. Emporia had other things in mind, as they shot lights out down the stretch. Madden Seidl for Emporia hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game at 58 with 14 seconds to go. JC had a chance to win it in regulation, but Jeremias Cruz three did not go, and the game went into overtime. 

To begin overtime, Cruz hit a three-pointer this time and gave the Blue Jays a three-point lead.  JC led by five with a minute to go, but the Spartans again came back. Two big threes for Emporia made it a one-point game, 67-66 with 20 seconds to go. Junior Lovell Autry made two free throws to give the Blue Jays a 69-66 lead. After an Emporia miss, the Blue Jays missed two free throws to seal the game. A half-court heave for the Spartans missed, and Junction City won in overtime. 

The Blue Jays snapped their three-game losing streak and improved to 10-5 on the season. 

Seniors Larkin Turner and Jeremias Cruz both had 16 points for JC, Autry had 13, and Isiah Handy added 11. 

Next up for JC is hosting Washburn Rural on Friday night at Blue Jay Event Center.

The National Weather said a Winter Storm Warning is in effect across the entire area Tuesday tonight until late Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp;

Snowfall of 4 to 7 inches will be common with locally higher amounts possible.

&nbsp;There is higher confidence in higher amounts in northern areas.

&nbsp;Winds are not expected to be overly strong with gusts of 20-25 MPH as snow is falling from the north to northeast. This could still lead to minor blowing and drifting snow given the dry and fluffy nature of the snow.

Wind chill values of -5 to -15 are forecast for late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning.

POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY—One person died from injuries in an accident just after 8a.m. Tuesday in Pottawatomie County.

According to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff, a 2006 Pontiac Solstice driven by 66-year-old Shirley Riegel of Oklahoma was southbound on Highway 99 at North Church Road in rural Westmoreland.

Geary County officials have announced the hiring of Raquel Cinco as the County’s new Convention and Visitors Bureau Director.

Originally from Los Angeles, California, Raquel moved to Kansas in 2019 with her husband and son.&nbsp; They chose Kansas so their son could grow up near his grandparents. Grandpa is a retired big red one soldier who, like many other Ft. Riley veterans, decided to plant roots here.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cinco started her career in Geary County at Acorns Resort (2019-2022) in Milford primarily selling the Conference Center and then selling the entire resort for weddings, reunions and any other event possible. She then became the Director of Sales at the Courtyard by Marriot (now Sonesta Essential) and Geary County Convention Center from 2022-2025.&nbsp; Having sold both event center spaces in the county and sitting on the CVB advisory board for the entirety of that time, she felt it was the perfect next move in her career to take on the Director position for the CVB.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Cinco will take over her office the last week of February.

Just after 3p.m. Monday, officers filed a report of theft by deception in the 2300 block of Tuttle Creek Blvd, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

&nbsp;Dara's Fast Lane reported an unknown subject called the store posing as a U.S. Marshall coercing the clerk into taking money to send to them. 

Total loss associated with this report is $1,145. Anyone with information can contact&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rileycountypolice.org/287/Crime-Stoppers">Crime Stoppers</a>. Using Crime Stoppers allows you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Public Works crews are busy preparing for the upcoming storm and crews will be working 24 hours during snow operations. The City has 700 tons of salt on hand and all seven plows are in service and ready to plow. We ask that you please remove cars off streets, if possible, to ensure plows have room to operate safely. Staff will be concentrating on main roads, followed by side roads and cul-de-sacs. In addition, contractor support will be in place.
