Silver Spring, Md. September 13, 2025 –&nbsp;The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has announced that Sunset Zoo was granted accreditation by AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission.&nbsp;

"Congratulations&nbsp;to the leadership and staff at Sunset Zoo for attaining the global ‘gold standard’ in zoological and aquarium accreditation,” said Dan Ashe, president and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “AZA’s standards continuously evolve to reflect best practices in the zoo and aquarium profession, with a strong emphasis on animal care and wellbeing at their core. Sunset Zoo has demonstrated a dedication to this exceptional level of care.”

AZA accreditation includes a detailed application and a meticulous multiple-day on-site inspection by an independent team of zoological professionals. The inspecting team analyzes all aspects of the facility’s operation, including animal care and wellbeing; veterinary care; staff training; educational programs; conservation efforts; financial stability; governance; and guest services. Detailed reports from the inspection team and the facility alike are then thoroughly evaluated by the Accreditation Commission. Finally, the Commission interviews top officials from the facility at a formal hearing, after which accreditation is fully granted, provisionally granted for one year, or denied.

Fort Riley announced an update via social media as of October 1, 2025: Due to a lapse in federal funding, employees are on furlough and the Retiree Appreciation Day that was scheduled on Post this Saturday is being postponed until after the funding has resumed.

Tapping of the Keg at 4 p.m. Friday will signal the beginning of Oktoberfest in downtown Junction City. The event runs from 4-11 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday. 

North Washington from 6th to 10th Streets will be blocked off for Oktoberfest. According to Co-Director Matt Hoover activities will include a free Kid's Zone tent with arts and crafts, all day play bands for $20, inflatables, climbing walls and&nbsp; putt putt golf. Circus Man will perform about every hour. "He does a little bit of everything. He does juggling, a little bit of comedy, balance activities, exercises. When it gets a little darker I think he's going to do a fire show, "added Hoover.

There will be free contests where participants are picked out of the crowd. They range from yodeling to stein holding with $100 prize first place prizes. A dinosaur exhibit is scheduled on Saturday at the C.L. Hoover Opera House with shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and also on Saturday a car show downtown from 3-7 p.m. There will be a street dance Friday evening.

The Drunk Monkeys Band will perform from 6-9 p.m. Friday and Brass Rewind Band from 5-8 p.m. Saturday.

There will be craft beer provided by Highwind Brewing Company, Manhattan Brewing Company, Aggieville Brewing Company and Riverbank Brewing.&nbsp;

There will be 13 food vendors plus ice cream, snow cones and Italian shaved ice.

The downtown streets for the festival will be closed at 7 p.m. Thursday and open back up no later than 9 a.m. Sunday.

This grant money will be purchasing 60 wildland helmet shrouds to protect the firefighters when fighting wildland fires, and 12 sections of forestry hose (50 foot) sections. The forestry hose can be attached to the brush fire units at wildfires so that the firefighters can reach areas inaccessible to the brush unit.

Accorfding to the Fire Department this is the third grant that they have received so far this fall.  Last week was the AFG Grant in the amount of $711,000.00 for air pacs for not only the department but also Grandview Plaza and Milford City Fire Departments.  That was a 95-5% match. Earlier the Kansas Pipeline Association awarded the department a $2,500.00 grant to purchase 5 4-gas monitors. These monitors are being placed on the main structure fire units.  At the scene of a fire, the monitors will be carried by the firefighters to monitor the air quality inside the structure.  They will also be used when responding on carbon monoxide alarms. This grant required no match.

All of the equipment that was requested thru these grants are vital to keeping not only firefighters safe, but also to help them protect the property of citizens. By getting grants, the amount of taxes that the rural residents have to pay for the needed equipment for the firefighters is lessened.&nbsp;

According to the Riley County Police Department activity report, a&nbsp;30-year-old woman reported an unknown male suspect pointed a handgun at her at the intersection of Hayes Drive and McCall Road in Manhattan just after 11:30p.m. on Monday. The suspect then drove away.

Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - Geary USD 475 has announced that Westwood Elementary kindergarten teacher Avery Rush and Junction City High School drama teacher BrookeLynn Mackin have been named the district’s nominees for the Kansas Horizon Award Program.

Rush was named the USD 475 Elementary Kansas Horizon Award nominee, while Mackin claimed the Secondary Kansas Horizon Award nomination. By being named USD 475’s Kansas Horizon Award winners, Rush and Mackin both received a $1,000 check on Monday from Central National Bank of Junction City. The duo will also be recognized at an upcoming Board of Education meeting.

The Kansas Horizon Award Program, sponsored by the Kansas State Department of Education, identifies, and recognizes representatives of excellent teaching in classrooms across the state. The mission of the program is to recognize exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.

Rush, who is now in her second year of teaching at Westwood and graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and Landscape Design, was raised in Harveyville, Kansas. She began working in USD 475 as an instructional assistant in September of 2022 before becoming a long-term substitute at Westwood from 2023 to 2024. She was hired full-time as a kindergarten teacher in January of 2024. Fast forward to 2025 and Rush can now be found encouraging her kindergarten students to do their very best and to enjoy every single day by creating a fun and exciting environment for her students to learn in.

“It is such a huge honor to be named the district’s elementary recipient for the Kansas Horizon Award because I absolutely love teaching,” said Rush. “To be honored by USD 475 as a teacher who is making a difference and doing positive things in her classroom, I can’t say enough how much of an honor this is."

Mackin, who is also in her second year in the district and is originally from Burleson, Texas, has helped carry on a long tradition of Junction City High School having one of the best drama and performing arts departments in the entire state. Mackin, who completed her practicum and student taught at JCHS while finishing up her degree at Kansas State University, will help lead two play performances as a full-time teacher by the end of 2025, which include the Importance of Being Earnest and The Man Who Came to Dinner, which will take place later this semester.

“It means a lot that I was named the Kansas Horizon Award secondary nominee for USD 475 especially since we are so close to a military base,” said Mackin. “Our catchphrase is to educate locally and effect globally, and I feel like we do just that with how many diverse students we have coming in and out. I tend to be pretty hard on myself, so it’s really nice to know that I am making a difference in our students lives.”

Kansas Horizon Award Program winners will be recognized at a special luncheon during the 2026 Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) Conference, which is scheduled for Feb. 19-20, 2026.

The cameras would cost a total of $103,000 and feed into a control room where they could be monitored.

According to the Riley County Police Department activity reported a 2005 GMC Sierra 3500 driven by Carson Avery, 35, of Riley, was traveling in the 9600 Block of Anderson Avenue. The driver lost control in a cloud of dust. The pickup traveled into a culvert. 

EMS transported Avery&nbsp; to Via Christi Hospital for treatment of his injuries.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional detials.

RCPD: Driver fled pickup rollover accident

DUBLIN (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers confirmed that backup quarterback Skylar Thompson, who played at Kansas State, was involved in an incident this weekend after a report that the player had been robbed.

The Irish Independent newspaper reported Sunday that Thompson was assaulted and robbed either Friday night or early Saturday in Dublin.

Irish public service broadcaster RTE reported that police, called Gardaí, “were aware of an incident involving a man in his 20s in the Dame Street area in the early hours of yesterday.”

The 28-year-old Thompson has been on injured reserve and wasn’t eligible to play Sunday in what is Ireland’s first regular-season NFL game. The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/steelers-vikings-score-dublin-ireland-7e948b2577e3ee6818292553b4170c92">Steelers beat the Minnesota Vikings 24-21</a>, and Thompson was at the game.

“We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin. We will have no further comment at this time as we are working with NFL security to gather more information regarding the incident,” Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten said.

Gardaí did not immediately respond to a request to comment by The Associated Press.

The Independent reported that Thompson was briefly treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin did not mention Thomson’s status at his postgame news conference.

Linebacker T.J. Watt was asked about it and responded: “I don’t have enough to comment on that.”

The NFL Players Association said it was “relieved to know that he is okay.”

“The NFLPA is actively gathering more information and working to understand the full circumstances surrounding what took place,”&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/NFLPA/status/1972333658347368527" target="_blank">it said in a statement</a>. “As always, our priority is the health and safety of our player members — especially as we continue to work on the player protections and well-being while playing international games — and we will continue to support Skylar in any way he needs.” The NFL declined to comment.

Thompson was at Kansas State from 2016-2021, according to his online bio.

A new report reflects how Kansas is falling short of some its commitments to improve the state's foster system.

Kansas kids in foster care still face severe placement instability despite some marginal improvements to the state system.

An<a href="https://cssp.org/resource/mcintyre-v-howard-progress-of-kansas-department-of-children-and-families-2024/" target="_blank">&nbsp;audit by the Center for the Study of Social Policy</a>&nbsp;reviewed the state’s performance in helping children in the state’s custody over the last year. Advocates described the annual report from the independent evaluator reviewing the state and its foster care contractors as a “mixed bag.”

The Kansas Department for Children and Families has now met eight of 14 obligations laid out in a 2020 lawsuit settlement. But the state is coming up short or falling behind for the other commitments.

Leecia Welch, Deputy Legal Director for Children’s Rights, says the number of children struggling to find a permanent home in some parts of the state is still a major concern.

“The report should be a wake-up call for anyone who cares about the well-being of children in Kansas,” Welch said. “Each of these data points reflects a child whose life is in limbo — not knowing where she will sleep that night, missing school, and disconnected from family and friends.”

In 2020, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasappleseed.org/foster-care-lawsuit/" target="_blank">state settled a lawsuit with child welfare advocacy group Kansas Appleseed</a>&nbsp;over issues relating to instability for foster care children. The agreement included an annual evaluation and report by an independent party to check on the state’s promises to improve.

This year, the state agency met four additional obligations relating to placement stability, mental health and trauma screens, and capacity and crisis intervention teams. In&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dcf.ks.gov/Newsroom/Pages/Child-Welfare-Reform.aspx" target="_blank">a statement</a>, Secretary Laura Howard touted how the audit showed most kids were in stable placement in the 2024 calendar year.

“We remain committed to maintaining these results and pressing forward to fulfill the remaining commitments,” Howard said.

Still, advocates say the report shows there is more work to do to improve the foster care system, with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/politics-elections-and-government/2024-09-17/kansas-failing-in-its-promise-to-fix-foster-care-system-new-audit-finds-let-down-at-every-turn" target="_blank">many issues from the previous audit</a>&nbsp;popping up again. While 92% of children in state custody are in stable placement, children without a permanent home continue to experience “extreme” instability.

In 2024, 341 kids bounced around temporary homes six or more times. These kids account for just 4% of children in custody, but experienced 50% of the total moves last year.

In addition, 100 children spent more than 300 nights without placement, compared to 57 kids and 83 nights the year prior. The study also showed that Black children were more likely to face instability.

Many regions of the state showed improvements in placement stability, but Teresa Woody, litigation director for Kansas Appleseed, pointed to worsening rates in Sedgwick County and western Kansas. Most of the Kansas kids who experienced placement instability were in those areas. She said short-term placements have more than doubled in those regions since 2021.

“It is especially concerning,” Woody said, “that many of the children in these regions who lack stable placements are children as young as 2 years old.”

That corresponds with an increasing need for foster care in Sedgwick County, which includes Wichita, over the past five years. One in four Kansas kids in the foster care system are from Sedgwick County, according to the state.

Placement instability is also feeding into unmet behavioral and mental health needs, Woody said. While Kansas met its obligation to provide initial mental health and trauma screens and expanded access to crisis intervention services, the study showed a little more than one-third of kids who need mental health services did not receive appropriate care.

Some Kansas foster kids suffer 'extreme' instability as state still fails to fix longstanding issues

WASHINGTON, D.C. — It’s a good day for any federal or state government agency when they can say kids are safer, and it's that day for the Federal Trade Commission and the Utah Division of Consumer Protection. Together, they&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/09/ftc-takes-action-against-operators-pornhub-other-pornographic-sites-deceiving-users-about-efforts">announced a settlement</a>&nbsp;with Aylo, a collection of companies managing more than 100 porn sites (including Pornhub, YouPorn, and Redtube) over their distribution of child sex abuse materials, as well as non-consensual images and video.

Among other things, the Pornhub settlement requires Aylo to give you an easy way to report these kinds of illegal content. Each site will have a “Content Removal Request” where anyone can flag any illegal content they see. Aylo has to suspend the identified content and, if they find the content to be illegal, they must take it down. If they find that content includes children, Aylo has to ban whoever posted it and report the content to the&nbsp;<a href="https://consumer.ftc.gov/now-leaving?external_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.missingkids.org%2Fgethelpnow%2Fcybertipline&amp;back_url=https%3A%2F%2Fconsumer.ftc.gov%2Fconsumer-alerts%2F2025%2F09%2Fprotecting-kids-and-adults-online%3Futm_source%3Dgovdelivery">National Center for Missing and Exploited&nbsp;Children</a>.

The order also requires that Aylo give a case manager to anyone going through the removal of their images, if you ask. That case manager will help keep you informed about the process.

For the FTC, keeping illegal sexually explicit materials off the internet is a priority. In fact, starting in May 2026, the FTC will use its civil law enforcement authority to start enforcing parts of the Take It Down Act, while the Department of Justice brings criminal enforcement. FTC: Protecting kids, adults online

Kansas farmers are hurting after China’s retaliatory tariffs on the United States closed a major market for the state’s biggest crop. Despite a productive year, farmers across Kansas may not break even.

Farm fields across Kansas are turning amber as sorghum crops come to full maturity. The state's farmers are expecting a bountiful harvest this year thanks to more rain than recent years.

But that's also coming at the same time the sorghum market is drying up thanks to U.S. tariffs on China. That means Kansas farmers are losing out.

Historically, Kansas is known as the wheat state. But in more recent years, it’s become the king of sorghum. The grain grows really well in Kansas. It’s also versatile like corn and can be used for livestock feed and biofuel production.

In Scott City, Amy France and her husband have been growing sorghum for decades. Even one of their children started farming nearby.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She said their crop was gorgeous this year.

“It was the best crop we’ve had in years,” France said. “We're expecting a 23% larger crop this year, which is absolutely a blessing.”

More rain than usual in semi-arid western Kansas has led to healthy sorghum and a higher yield of the grain.

For the first time since 2016, Kansas is&nbsp;<a href="https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/CurrentMap/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?KS" target="_blank">mostly out of drought</a>&nbsp;— 80% of the state is without any dry conditions.

Despite the crop doing well, farmers are finding it hard to sell.

President Donald Trump's trade war with China resulted in the sorghum price plummeting, leaving Kansas farmers unable to benefit from their productive crops.

In 2022, the price for grain was&nbsp;<a href="https://ksdata.ku.edu/ksdata/ksah/ag/16ag14.pdf" target="_blank">$12.30 per hundredweight</a>, which would be a little over $6 per bushel. For an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/news-and-publications/news/stories/2025/02/agriculture-grain-sorghum-crop-trials-2024.html#:~:text=And%20yet%2C%20says%20Kansas%20State%20University%20assistant,13%20bushels%20higher%20than%20the%20previous%20year." target="_blank">average Kansas farmer</a>, that would be about $400 per acre.

But now the price is hovering around $3 per bushel, or about $200 per acre

Sorghum producers rely on the international market. The crop does not have a robust domestic market because most ethanol plants and feedyards prefer corn.

Over half of the state’s sorghum is exported, mostly to be used as animal feed or as an ingredient in a popular alcoholic drink in China.

Earlier this year, the U.S. imposed new tariffs on China. In retaliation, China enacted its own new tariffs on American imports. That’s led to buyers there purchasing little to no sorghum from U.S. farmers since April.

“China has been our number one export market,” France said. “With that being gone at the moment, it is difficult, leaving our producers without our single most critical outlet.”

Mark Welch, grain economist for Texas A&amp;M University, said China can do without American sorghum for a while. The big sorghum consumer has recently made Brazil and Australia as its new sources for the grain.

“Now we've got all this grain sorghum piling up,” Welch said, “what are we going to do with it?”

The U.S. sorghum will eventually sell because the price is so low. Some will go to Mexico or Europe, and some U.S. feedyards will buy a little more sorghum at a discount price.

But Kansas farmers won’t see great returns on their investment.

Welch said that’s not a sustainable situation for the grain belt.

“We're just built for a competitive advantage in the global ag markets,” Welch said, “and to step away from that would be a seismic shift in the structure of American agriculture.”

Kansas sorghum farmers will have their biggest yield in years. But tariffs killed the market

TOPEKA, KAN. —A Kansas woman was sentenced to 293 months in prison for the murder of her husband, a U.S. Army soldier, according to the United State's Attorney.

On February 14, 2025, a federal jury found Margaret E. Shafe, 31, guilty of murder in the second degree for killing her husband, Greg Shafe, in February 2024 at their home on the Fort Riley military installation. Evidence presented at trial showed that Shafe shot her husband in the face while in the presence of two minor children.&nbsp;

“Margaret Shafe deserves to go to prison. The evidence in this case showed she murdered her husband while the couple’s two young daughters were in the home,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser. “The Court heard brave testimony from Ms. Shafe’s own daughter who witnessed her mother shoot her stepfather in a fury.”&nbsp;

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division, and Fort Riley Fire and Emergency Services investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sara Walton and Lindsey Debenham and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Robin Graham prosecuted the case.

 </figure>Kansas State UniversityWith a $1 million gift to the Kansas State University Agriculture Innovation Initiative, Cargill continues to accelerate the university’s efforts to advance global food security solutions through interdisciplinary research, infrastructure expansion and industry collaboration. The recent donation places K-State within 5% of the initiative’s $210 million goal.&nbsp;The gift also surpasses $10 million in Cargill’s lifetime giving to the university — a philanthropic milestone for the company.“Cargill and Kansas State University are united in their commitment to nourish our planet’s rapidly growing population,” said Scott Eilert, senior director of responsible sourcing for Cargill’s global food business. “We choose to invest in the Agriculture Innovation Initiative because its novel design brings academia and industry together in a quest to help farmers and ranchers produce more food with less impact. Cargill donates $1 million to K-State’s Agriculture Innovation Initiative

After four years of handing the Silver Trophy to Manhattan, the Junction City Blue Jays stun number one Manhattan and take back the Silver Trophy, winning 28-14.

 </figure>By Anthony GorgesJC PostAfter four years of handing the Silver Trophy to Manhattan, the Junction City Blue Jays stun number one Manhattan and take back the Silver Trophy, winning 28-14.Junction City went three-and-out to begin the game, and the Manhattan Indians scored on their first drive to take a 7-0 lead. Similar to last week, the Blue Jays responded and drove down the field to tie the game at 7-7 on a three-yard touchdown run by senior Lance Norris.The game then turned into a defensive battle. Manhattan was driving when senior Marshall Karmann made his first of two interceptions. JC stalled out on their drive, and then Karmann intercepted his second pass toward the sideline late in the second quarter.<figure>

 </figure>After a targeting penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Blue Jays were on the move at the end of the first half. On a crucial third down, senior quarterback Conrad Gomez hit senior Jamarcus Tyson over the middle and took the ball down to the 18-yard line, six (0:06) seconds remaining in the half. After timeouts by both teams, Junction City Head Coach Randall Zimmerman left his offense on the field. Gomez dropped back to pass and hit senior Lovell Autry in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown connection with one (0:01) second left in the half.Junction City led 14-7 at halftime.To open the second half, Manhattan took nearly five minutes off the clock and scored a touchdown on a 14-yard touchdown run by EJ Massenberg. The score was all knotted up at 14-14.The Blue Jays responded just two plays later. Senior quarterback Conrad Gomez hit senior receiver Lovell Autry for a 77-yard touchdown connection on a deep pass down the sideline. Autry stayed on his feet, tightroped the sideline, and put JC back up in front 21-14 with 6:54 to go in the third quarter.Then, the Blue Jay defense came up big once again. Senior linebacker Jamarcus Tyson intercepted a pass and returned it all the way down to the Manhattan one-yard line. Gomez scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak, and Junction City led 28-14 late in the third quarter.<figure>

 </figure>Both teams lost a fumble on the next two drives of the game, but neither team capitalized. At the end of three quarters of play, Junction City led 28-14.In the fourth quarter, the Blue Jay defense was again up for the challenge. JC turned away Manhattan on fourth and goal from the nine-yard line, senior Lovell Autry intercepted a pass in the endzone by Manhattan quarterback Finn Watson on the next drive, and then a late interception by junior linebacker Khaliel Walker sealed the deal for the Blue Jays.<figure>

 </figure>Junction City knocked off the Manhattan Indians by a final score of 28-14. Manhattan was ranked number one in all of Class 6A. The Blue Jays snapped a four-game losing streak to Manhattan and regained the Silver Trophy for the first time since the fall of 2020.“I just love these kids, man,” Junction City High School Head Football Coach Randall Zimmerman said. “Everything we’ve talked about from the beginning of the summer came to fruition here tonight. These kids came together and responded very, very well.”The Blue Jay defense, led by defensive coordinator Ty Zimmerman, forced six turnovers on the night and also forced three turnover on downs during the game as well. “Ty and our whole staff just work so hard,” Zimmerman said. “Our kids have really bought in, and man, that’s a really good Manhattan football team. We came away with a huge win!”“I am very, very proud of that defense, and very, very proud of our team and all our kids.”With the win, Junction City improves to 3-1 on the season and plays at Hays next Friday.
