City Commission approves appointments

This is day 2 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest was off to a rapid start in southwest Kansas on Thursday with temperatures topping out about 100 degrees. There will be more information available on how yields and quality will compare to average by the beginning of next week when reports start to come in.

In central Kansas, harvest came to a halt after Tuesday’s rainfall but will pick back up by the weekend with high winds and nearly triple digit temperatures in the forecast.

Derek Sawyer who farms in McPherson County reports that before Tuesday’s rain they were cutting wheat that was yielding 80 bushels per acre. But Tuesday brought the area 5 to 6 inches of rain, up to 10 inches in some places, and 80 mile per hour sustained winds. This took kernels out of the heads in many wheat fields. He estimates that they probably lost 25% of the yield potential. Test weights were good, but will no doubt decrease with the rain. Some fields are in standing water and may not be able to be harvested. While he should be over halfway done with harvest, Sawyer reports that he barely even got started, and won’t be able to get into even the fields with the least amount of rainfall until the weekend at the earliest. The creek is out of its banks and roads are flooded in the area.

Lee Scheufler who farms in Rice and Ellsworth counties reports that harvest began on June 10 and that yields were average up to 20 percent above average. They’ve had a couple rain delays, including Tuesday’s rainfall which ranged from 1.75 to 4 inches in the area, with localized flooding. He was able to find dry ground on Thursday and get back to harvest before the weekend. After the rains, test weight has decreased slightly but is still around average. He is only about 15 to 20 percent of the way done with harvest and has at least a week left.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Geary County Commissioners heard from the public this week about a potential natural gas pipeline project on the southwest edge of Junction City near Taylor Road.&nbsp;

Commissioners knew nothing about survey work being done in that area. "There's concern about it being done on the west side of town but nobody knows about it. City doesn't know anything, County doesn't know anything, our zoning people don't know anything so we've got to dig into that," said Chairman Keith Ascher. He added a resident brought up the topic thay they had heard that this was going to happen

Ascher added that the commission will have their legal counsel try to check with the Kansas Corporation Commission to obtain more details on the matter.

The Geary County Historical Society is set to host an open house and STEAM Saturday at the historic Starcke House on Saturday June 21st from 1pm-3:30pm. Starcke House is located directly next to the main museum building at 530 N. Adams and is one of six historic properties owned and operated by the Geary County Historical Society. Along with house tours of the 150-year-old building, there will also be Victorian lawn games and hands-on activities during the event. 

The museum will also be open to the public - and everyone is welcome to stop in to explore the new exhibit: "The Missing Piece: Black History in Geary History."

STEAM Saturday is a free, come-and-go event and open to the entire community, all ages are welcome. Parking is available at the museum or along the street, and visitors should take care around construction equipment as painting continues at the museum building through the end of June.

The Geary County Public Works Department announced that they will be conducting chip seal operations on county roads beginning Monday, June 23 and continuing for approximately three (3) weeks, weather permitting. Chip sealing is a preventive maintenance process that helps extend the life of roadways by sealing the surface from water intrusion and improving traction.

Motorists should expect temporary traffic delays and reduced speed limits, fresh oil and loose gravel on roadway surfaces, and one lane traffic controlled by flaggers. Avoid driving or turning abruptly on freshly treated surfaces and follow all posted signage and instruction from traffic control personnel.

ELLSWORTH&nbsp;– The Bureau of Land Management will offer the public an opportunity to adopt a wild horse at an adoption event held at the Svaty Ranch Public Off-Range Pasture on Saturday, June 21.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature 12 yearling and 2-year-old wild horses available for adoption. Pictures and more information about the wild horses available for adoption&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/svatyranch/posts/pfbid02RbQsjJKUmaF14iWbjeoVFCgksMdavk5oHtP2K1Pdfh93DewEjQ6rhmqpW1CTtLql">can be found on Facebook</a>. The Svaty Ranch Public Off-Range Pasture is located at 1016 Avenue J, Ellsworth.

BLM staff will be onsite to assist with and approve applications. To qualify to adopt, applicants must be at least 18 years old, with no record of animal abuse. Qualified homes must have a minimum of four hundred square feet of corral space per animal, with access to food, water, and shelter. A six-foot corral fence is required for adult horses; five-feet for yearlings; and four-and-a-half feet for burros. All animals must be loaded in covered, stock-type trailers with swing gates and sturdy walls and floors.

Family YMCA undergoes facility improvements

There is a joint City-County cleanup scheduled from Aug. 4-9.&nbsp;

It will include the strategic placement of rollaway dumpsters in both city and county areas, as well as free access to the Geary County Transfer Station for all county residents.

The goal is to give residents the opportunity to dispose of large or accumulated waste items that are not part of regular household trash collection. This initiative is intended to assist with the cleanup of properties by providing disposal options that would normally require residents to transport items themselves.

The City will coordinate efforts to ensure that dumpsters are managed properly, are not overfilled, and that appropriate public safety measures are in place to prevent climbing or rummaging in the containers.

There will be four City rollaway dumpster locations.

Each one will receive a 40-feet rollaway dumpster:

1. 12th Street near Blue Building (BB) – Utilize existing parking spaces

2. Pool Parking Lot (906 W. 4th Street) – Near current dumpster; minimize impact on parking

4. North Park Parking Lot (by Thompson Drive)

City staff will periodically monitor these locations throughout the week&nbsp;

• Two rollaways at City Public Works – Dedicated for tires and appliances

• Two rollaway dumpsters to be located at county-designated sites

• County will always maintain access to dumpsters for residents.

The cost of the cleanup initiative will be split 50/50 between the City and County. Rollaway Dumpster costs $200 per unit. Trash disposal costs $64 per ton.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement are investigating a burglary at a church in Riley County.

Just before 10a.m. Tuesday, officers filed a report for burglary in the 15800 block of Green-Randolph Road. in Randolph, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

Alert Covenant Church reported an unknown suspect took cash and electronic equipment. 

The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $4,000. Anyone with information can contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you to remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Geary County Offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19 in commemoration of Juneteenth. This includes the Geary County Public Works Department, HHW/Recycling Center, and the County Landfill. The Geary County Transfer Station will remain OPEN.

The Emancipation Proclamation, an edict issued by President Abraham Lincoln freeing the enslaved, went into effect January 1, 1863.  The information did not reach all parts of the Confederate south for over two years, June 19, 1865, now commemorated as Juneteenth. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Geary County Public Works Department will be conducting chip seal operations on county roads beginning Monday, June 23, 2025, and continuing for approximately three (3) weeks, weather permitting. Chip sealing is a preventive maintenance process that helps extend the life of roadways by sealing the surface from water intrusion and improving traction.

Motorists should expect temporary traffic delays and reduced speed limits, fresh oil and loose gravel on roadway surfaces, and one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers. Please drive slowly and cautiously in work zones to protect workers and prevent damage to vehicles. Avoid driving or turning abruptly on freshly treated surfaces and follow all posted signage and instruction from traffic control personnel.

Geary County Emergency Management provided a weather update from the National Weather Service. A mostly dry and mild afternoon Wednesday with only slight chances for thunderstorms. While isolated in nature, they could produce gusty winds around 50 mph and small hail. 

Dry forecast commences Wednesday evening through the end of the week as upper ridge builds in. Focus turns to the heat as high heat indices peak near 100 degrees each afternoon Friday through Sunday.

Flood watch/warnings have been cancelled and 20% chance of rain in the early afternoon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

High school seniors and college students can learn about career opportunities in precision agriculture, data analysis and variable rate application equipment during Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/educational-workshops/precision-agriculture-workshop/">Smart Farm Challenge Precision Agriculture Workshop</a>&nbsp;from July 27-29.

Workshop participants will engage in hands-on activities, including flying drones, learning about soil and plant sensors, and collecting field data. There will also be opportunities for participants to engage with industry partners to connect what they are learning to the wide range of precision agriculture career fields.

As many as 30 participants will be learning from faculty at the agronomy facilities and farms on the Manhattan campus, including all meals and housing in the residence halls.

Students of any skill level or familiarity with precision agriculture and agronomy are welcome to attend. The cost of the workshop is $50. Registration is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.agronomy.k-state.edu/outreach-and-services/educational-workshops/precision-agriculture-workshop/">online</a>&nbsp;and will close on July 11 or when it's full.

K-State conference to help high school seniors, college students explore careers in precision agriculture

GEARY COUNTY—Four people were injured in an accident just after 6p.m. Tuesday in Geary County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by Jeffery A.&nbsp; Jones, 31, Herington, was northbound on U.S. 77 six miles south of Junction City. The SUV&nbsp;hydroplaned and traveled into the south ditch.

EMS transported Jones and passengers 22-year-old Zed A.&nbsp;Bryant, 38 Jennifer L&nbsp;Wangerin-Smith, both of Herington and 31-year-old Derrick J.&nbsp;Hawkes of Manhattan to&nbsp;Stormont Vail - Flint Hills Campus - Junction City. Hawkes was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Geary County Emergency management provided information on a Creek Flood Warning in effect until 9:14PM 6/18/25 late Wednesday evening. Minor Flooding is forecast for Lyon Creek near Junction City from Wednesday morning to late Wednesday evening.

At 21.0 feet, the north bank of the creek floods near the HWY 77 bridge.  At 23.6 feet, the south bank of the creek floods near HWY 77.At 8:15 AM CDT Tuesday the stage was 6.0 feet.The river is expected to rise above flood stage late Wednesday morning to a crest of 22.6 feet early Wednesday afternoon. It will then fall below flood stage Wednesday afternoon.Flood stage is 21.0 feet.

Precautionary/preparedness actions . . .Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive cars through flooded areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Junction City Police Department's Community Involvement Unit will be giving away bicycles of all sizes on Friday, June 20th, 2025, from 4:00 until 6:00 pm. These bicycles will be given away as is - first come first served. 

The location of the giveaway will be at the Warehouse, 9th and Monroe, just east of the police department.
