Geary County Public Works announced that the wooden stringers and deck boards have been replaced on the Old Katy Bridge project, and the bridge is now open to traffic. Public Works crews will be on site next week to finish minor detail and clean-up work. Some minor delays may be expected.

As a reminder, the Old Katy Bridge is a historic bridge that is one lane, so the County urges the traveling public to use caution when approaching and to be vigilant of approaching vehicles in the opposite direction. They also ask that motorists lower their speed when crossing the wooden deck bridge as this will help minimize dynamic loads, such as vibrations, bouncing, and/or shock. These dynamic loads are more damaging than the vehicles’ static weight alone and will help with the longevity of the new wooden deck and stringers.

Just before 6:30p.m. Thursday, officers filed a report of criminal damage to property in the 200 block of 5th Street, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 42-year-old woman reported an unknown suspect damaged her daughter’s cello on a school bus. The estimated total loss associated with this case is approximately $2,000.

 Anyone with information, contact RCPD or the Manhattan Riley County Crime Stoppers. Using the Crime Stoppers service can allow you remain anonymous and could qualify you for a cash reward up to $1,000.

USD 475 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Reginald Eggleston told a Military Affairs Council Breakfast audience in Junction City Thursday that there are approximately 7,200 to 7,300 students in the school district. A total of 49 languages are spoken.

The new Early Childhood Center is due to open for use by students in the fall of 2026. It will have 32 classrooms serving Pre-K students.The actual facility is expected to be completed in the April - May 2026 time frame.

Also in 6th through 8th grade is a big group and in 9th through 12th grade students can earn college credit prior to graduation.

Safety for students in the schools is important and Eggleston credited the Fort Riley, Junction City Police and Geary County Sheriff's Offices for their help.

Staffing for the schools was filled this year. There are no vacancies.

Reginald Eggleston has been nominated as a finalist for Superintendent of the Year.

There are 15 CTE careeer pathways, five new schools have been built since 2012, and $2.6 million is the total dollar amount of scholarships earned by the class of 2025 at JCHS.

Superintendent speaks at the MAC Breakfast

The Dorothy Bramlage Public Library Board of Trustees has announced that Assistant Director Donna Porter has been hired as the library’s new director.&nbsp;&nbsp;She will officially step into her new role on&nbsp;October 1 and begin training with the current director, Susan Moyer, until her retirement on&nbsp;November 1.

Porter has worked for the library for ten years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She began as a Circulation Clerk, and later became the head of that department and then Assistant Director.&nbsp;&nbsp;In that time, she also achieved her library master degree from the University of Missouri.

Geary County Emergency Management has shared photos of the demolition of the J-Hill Road Bridge at Exit 299.

The demolition took place Wednesday night, requiring a closure of both eastbound and westbound I-70 (near Junction City and Grandview Plaza) from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. to allow crews to safely complete the demo and cleanup work.

I-70 has since reopened in both directions, with traffic reduced to one lane each way, as pavement replacement work continues. The new J-Hill Road Bridge is expected to be completed by July 2026, weather permitting.

Liz has been in her position since June, but has had experience working as a paraprofessional, working at group homes and has degrees in General Human Ecology and Non-profit administration.

She told the Optimists that the “Mission of Big Lakes is to deliver quality services that promote choice, independence, and inclusion for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Their values are support, teamwork, respect, integrity, valor and enthusiasm. Services are provided in Geary, Riley, Pottawattamie and Clay Counties. Big Lakes was established in 1973 by parents who wanted an option for their IDD child other than an institution.

Eighty-five percent of the funds to operate Big Lakes come from Medicaid, which is currently at risk. This is our biggest challenge right now.” Liz also stated that “at this time the organization is 34% behind in Medicaid funding. Another challenge is finding and maintaining staff who serve 200 clients at different workplaces and living spaces during a 24/7 period. Thirty hours of training is provided to staff who must have at least a high school diploma and pass both a background check and drug test.

Kratom and 7-OH are often marketed alongside each other because 7-OH is naturally found in <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/public-health-focus/fda-and-kratom#:~:text=Products%20prepared%20from%20kratom%20leaves,use%20disorder%2C%20and%20opioid%20withdrawal.">kratom</a>&nbsp;in small amounts. However, 7-OH products use synthetic compounds with much higher concentration and potency.

These products are sold in stores such as smoke shops, gas stations, convenience stores, and online shops. They can be gummies, liquid shots, tablets, or powders. It is sometimes sold as if it were the same product as kratom, but it is not. 7-OH is more addictive, and using it in combination with alcohol or other sedatives can cause severe respiratory depression, and in some cases, even death.

Because 7-OH is unregulated, the potency and quality of products can vary widely, making it difficult to safely gauge dosage. KDHE emphasizes that combining 7-OH with other substances increases the risk of overdose.

“We are urging individuals to avoid using any products containing 7-OH,”&nbsp;Dr. Dereck Totten, KDHE Chief Medical Officer, said. “It can be extremely harmful, even in small doses. Always consult with your healthcare provider before consuming any new supplements, and if you suspect an adverse reaction or overdose, seek medical attention immediately.”

The FDA has received reports of harmful effects associated with 7-OH products, which include addiction, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal distress, insomnia, seizures, and withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, body aches, fatigue, irritability, and cold sweats.

- Because 7-OH acts on opioid receptors, it can cause respiratory depression and overdose.

- Opioid overdose (including 7-OH) can be reversed with naloxone, a medication that restores normal breathing.

- It is important to recognize that naloxone prevents opioid overdose. However, if 7-OH is mixed with other drugs or alcohol, then naloxone may not fully reverse the effects.

- Naloxone can be administered through the nose or as an intramuscular injection to save a person’s life. Both methods are equally effective.

- Anyone who suspects an overdose should call 911 immediately and administer naloxone, if available.

- Read labels carefully when buying candies or supplements.. Talk to children and teens about the risks of 7-OH.

- Keep 7-OH products away from children and pets.

- Stay informed about overdose risks and keep naloxone available in case of an emergency.

- Consult a healthcare provider before using any supplements, especially anything marketed for pain, energy or mood.

- Seek medical care or call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 if you have concerns about 7-OH.

Opposition to K-State’s plan for the associate degree prompts collaboration deal

TOPEKA — The Kansas Board of Regents approved a proposal from Kansas State University to work with Cowley County Community College to offer an associate degree in milling science after opposition from community and technical colleges threatened to derail the initiative.

Kansas State administrators sought permission to make use of its extensive milling science infrastructure and faculty to develop their own 60 credit-hour degree in the subject. The idea of an online alternative to K-State’s 120-credit program — the only bachelor’s degree in milling science in the United States — was endorsed by Cargill, Seaboard Foods, Hill’s Pet Nutrition and several trade associations.

“The proposal reflects our land-grant mission,” said Jesse Perez Mendez, the provost at K-State. “The demand for skilled professionals in supervisory, operational and technical roles in milling, baking, feed and pet food is significant.”

However, Kansas’ two-year community and technical colleges raised objections to the original proposal by K-State to invade their academic domain by single-handedly launching an associate degree.

“The community and technical college’s mission is squarely in the area that K-State is trying to stray,” said Heather Morgan, executive director of the Kansas Association of Community Colleges. “This situation will impact the trust between the colleges and K-State in future potential partnerships.”

Samantha Christy-Dangermond, chair of the Kansas Postsecondary Technical Education Board, likewise challenged K-State’s proposal for its associate degree in milling. She pointed to Board of Regents policy discouraging state universities from offering associate degrees in academic or technical programs where a baccalaureate existed. K-State offers four bachelor’s degrees in grain science and industry, she said.

Subsequently, K-State put together a cooperative agreement with Cowley County Community College to jointly offer the associate degree. Under the arrangement, Cowley County students would be able to apply certificate credits toward the associate degree at K-State.

It was enough to convince the Board of Regents last week to endorse the academic program.

“I think the collaboration is very important,” said Alysia Johnston, a member of the Board of Regents. “It strengthens your program and certainly strengthens the ability of students to be able to have a seamless path, and also helps business and industry.”

The curriculum would accommodate industry professionals seeking to earn a degree online while maintaining their job and would serve traditional students aiming to complete a two-year technical degree before entering the food manufacturing or grain processing workforce.

A collection of agriculture companies and lobbying organizations offered support for K-State’s campaign to create the associate degree in Kansas.

“By offering this targeted training, current and future employees will be able to bring expertise to mills throughout Kansas, reflective of the state’s position as a grain production leader,” said Nicholas Rozzi, vice president of product development at Hill’s Pet Nutrition in Topeka.

Not every supervisory or management position at food and feed production facilities required the traditional four-year college degree, said Scott Eilert, a vice president at Cargill Protein and Salt.

He said an online associate degree would better fit the life circumstance of milling employees unable to devote themselves to a degree program that could take four years or more to finish.

Jane DeMarchi, president of the North American Millers’ Association, said the organization supported the existing four-year milling degree at K-State but was convinced the secondary credential would add to the employee pipeline for companies processing wheat, corn, oats or rye into flour.

“Our hope is that current working employees will be able to advance their careers by earning an AAS degree while working full-time,” she said.

Geary County Fire Chief Garry Berges has announced that a FEMA Assistance to Firefighter Grant in the amount of $711,987.00 was received for the purchase of much needed replacement air pacs for Geary County Rural Fire, Grandview Plaza Fire and the City of Milford Volunteer Fire.

While the entire grant was for $711,987.00, FEMA will cover 95% of the grant ($678,083.00) while the three departments will pay the remaining 5% of the grant ($33,904.00) split according to their amount of air pacs obtained for their department.

These replacement air pacs and masks are crucial for the firefighters when fighting not only structure fires, but also other types of fires including vehicle fires. Majority of these departments’ air pacs are over 15 years in age. Newer technology and the age of the current ones have made the old air pacs obsolete

Geary County Fire Chief Garry Berges stated, “a couple of weeks ago, we were at a training exercise using our air pacs. Two of them failed to perform properly even though they were certified a month prior by a certified air pac technician. They are old, worn, and repair parts are hard to obtain.”

Grandview Plaza Fire Chief Jeremy Bramwell said, “it is pennies on the dollar. If we would not have received this grant, the taxpayers would have had to pay for the entire purchase of this much needed fire equipment to keep our firefighters safe in Grandview Plaza, Milford, and Geary County.

The Fire Chiefs will be meeting in the near future to start the necessary steps to obtain the equipment which will include putting it out to bid.

Local departments receive grant funding help

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Junction City High School biology teacher Melissa Hoyle&nbsp;is bringing agriculture into her classroom this school year as her students are learning how to grow their own plants and food by utilizing the Tower&nbsp;Garden&nbsp;System&nbsp;from the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom.

“Each summer I try to branch out and explore different science professional development opportunities that I can bring back to my classroom. I was so excited to have the opportunity to win the Tower&nbsp;Garden&nbsp;System for my students through the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom,” said Hoyle, who’s classroom was one of only three selected in the entire state of Kansas to receive the tower garden.

With the Tower Garden System, Hoyle’s students are not only learning and seeing first-hand how plants develop through our ecosystem, but also experiment with different variables that impact how well plants grow.

“This especially ties in with our ecology unit because students must be able to explain how the biotic and abiotic parts of an ecosystem are dependent on each other. I hope in the future that I am able to have my students take what they learn from the Tower&nbsp;Garden&nbsp;to explore other hydro and aquaponic models,” said Hoyle.

The Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom is a statewide educational program providing resources, training and support to schools, educators and volunteers so that they can meaningfully connect children to agriculture.

JCHS Students Utilizing Tower Garden System

Hope Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center

&nbsp; Hope Ranch Therapeutic Riding Center at 3715 West 69th Avenue in Manhattan is hosting its Fall Show and Open House Saturday, October 25, beginning at 9 a.m. Last year’s event drew an estimated 300 people.

The show is a wonderful way to showcase what Hope Ranch clients have learned. Other riders and horses from the community are invited to sign up for various classes. Those interested are welcome to sign up online through a google form. The sign-up link and QR code will be on the Hope Ranch Facebook page. Cost is $10 per class. Classes are open to all ages, levels, and abilities from walk only to advanced riders. A costume class (Halloween theme) will be offered. The show starts at 9 a.m. with English and estimated start time of 10 a.m. for Western classes. 

In addition to the show, Jammin’ Jamaican will be there serving both breakfast and lunch. Free horseback rides and horse and cart rides will be offered.

A tack sale also is planned. Hope Ranch is accepting donations of gently used tack and other riding equipment and accessories for the tack sale. Tack being offered includes used saddles, bridles, bits, clothing, riding boots, and a couple sets of jump standards with flower boxes and poles. All proceeds will go towards the Hope Ranch program including scholarship funds for participants and a new adaptive therapy saddle for disabled riders. Tremendous donations were received this past year.

New Hope Ranch merchandise will be available for purchase including shirts (regular and Halloween themed options) and totes.

The JC Breakfast Optimist Club, which supports 16 different Geary County youth organizations, provides 3 scholarships to high school students, donates to the Magdalene Project and sponsors a Junior Optimist Club at Junction City High School and St. Xavier’s Catholic Schools, is having a fundraiser at the Blu Restaurant on September 30 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.&nbsp; 

Twenty percent of purchases will be given back to the club during this fundraiser and donations will be accepted.&nbsp;

RILEY COUNTY–&nbsp;Law enforcement in Manhattan have made two arrests this week after a lengthy investigation into multiple vehicle burglaries during the last two months.

Just before 3:30p.m. Tuesday, police arrested Jessup McClelland, 25, of Manhattan, in the 1100 block of Freemont Avenue in Manhattan. He is being held o a $12,000 bond on requested charges that include three counts of criminal use of a financial card.&nbsp;&nbsp;McClelland has previous convictions for burglary, obstruction and for drugs, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Just after 12:30p.m. Monday,&nbsp; police arrested Adyson Westgate, 19, of Wamego in the 1800 block of Hayes Drive. He was jailed on two counts of criminal use of a financial card and one count of burglary to a vehicle. 

Westgate met the requirement of a $10,000 bond and is no longer in custody.

The RCPD thanked the community for sharing camera footage that assisted in this ongoing investigation and encourage anyone who may have been a victim of vehicle burglaries and has not yet reported it, to contact the RCPD at (785) 537-2112.

RCPD: Local restaurant lost $1,800 in fraud scheme

KSU President Richard Linton informed the Manhattan City Commission Tuesday that as of Sept. 2 enrollment at K-State totaled 21,182, third highest in the history of the university. The final number is expected to go a little higher in October than now.

That current number is higher than three years ago when it was just above 18,500.&nbsp;

--Research funding increased by 21.55%, highest in KSU history.

--Another in all time K-State history was $150.4 million in legislative funding

--Seven facility ribbon cuttings are planned on the K-State campuses this year ( Manhattan, Salina and Olathe )

--There are 1,000 new alumni association members

--The women's basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen

K-State is approaching a goal of 30,000 students - learners including 23,000 to 25,000 degree seking learners and 5,000 to 7,000 certificate seeking learners.

Students from 95 Kansas counties and 43 states or territories attend KSU.

Princeton Review gave the university rankings of number one for friendliest students to number two for best quality of life.
